Dalton Conley You May Ask Yourself Summary
Dalton Conley describes labeling theory in Chapter 6 of You May Ask Yourself as the belief that
individuals subconsciously notice how others see or label them, and their reactions to those labels over
time form the basis of their self identity (Conley, 2011:203). In other words, over time, a person s self
identity changes to fit the character other people impose upon them. An action itself isn t necessarily
deviant unless society decides it is. Labeling theory can go either way, either positive or negative.
While not necessarily deviant, an example of the self fulfilling (or Pygmalion) prophecy created by
labeling is from You May Ask Yourself, Chapter 13. Conley (2011) makes reference to a study by
Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson who administered IQ tests to a group of students. They then
proceeded to randomly select a fifth of the students for their experiment, and communicated to their
teachers that they were particularly bright (basically labelling them.) At the end of the year they
retested all of the students, and found that the ones they had singled out as higher potential ended up
performing better on the test than their peers. The researchers found that the label they had attached to
the students led to the teachers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Schur (1980, 1984) who described labeling as a social construction of culture, which means that it is
artificially defined by society. This indicates that proper concepts will be destitute in the face of ever
changing eccentricity of social standards (Hashem, 2015:121). Society dictates what is and what is not
considered deviant behavior, and treats the person accordingly (whether positive or negative. Labeling
tends to lead to stigmatization. Noelle Vance wrote in her article titled Labeling Theory that When
relationships with parents, teachers, or friends are weakened as a result of formal stigmatization,
individuals are more likely to seek affiliation with criminal

Luck Egalitarianism Summary
In reaction to gross and compounding economic disparities in the international sphere, cosmopolitan
philosophers like Moellendorf have addressed the international state, claiming that the degree of
inequality is unjustifiable. Moellendorf operates with a Rawlsian understanding of ethical relations,
but expands this notion from the domestic sense into the international sense, claiming that the degree
of globalization is sufficient such that it creates an association in which the interdependence is
sufficiently strong, largely non voluntary and constitutive of a significant part of the background rules
that govern members lives, forming the basis of duties for distributive justice. From this understanding
for the need for global distributive justice, Moellendorf claims that the main strategy to address this
inequality is through a global progressive tax. Moellendorf s conception, however, overstates the
degree to which globalization has created international cohesiveness. Though a progressive tax would
certainly address global inequality, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Luck egalitarianism refers to the arbitrary methods by which various states came to be in possession
of their resources and the need for a system of redistribution similar to Moellendorf s global tax in
order to address the systems of inequality arising from arbitrarily having more or less valuable
resources. Wenar, however, disagrees with the notion of a global tax, citing concerns over sentiments
of distrust in states recently liberated from former colonial states. In response to this distrust, Wenar
proposes a system of popular resource sovereignty, in which the value derived from a nation s
resources are not subject to global taxation, but rather are directed toward the benefit of the nation s
people rather than a nation s

The Great Depression Caused The Depression
The Great Depression began during October 1929 and ended during 1939. President Herbert Hover
was the president of The Great Depression the causes of the depression has many different factors that
played into it. When Wall Street crashed during 1929, approximately 10 to 15 billion dollars were lost
because the prices of the stock market which started to decrease rapidly in just 24 hours. Many of the
causes of The Great Depression were that there were a lot of overproduction of consumer goods which
resulted in the decrease in demand, another reason was that there were many bankruptcies and high
level of debt, and finally in 1932 the Dustbowl which hurt farmers crops destroying land and causing
people to either become employed and or even homeless. During the Roaring Twenties, the Middle
Class Americans live life really happy and had a lot of luxury goods. Industries have also had an
economic boom during the 1920s. Many people in the middle class had lots of things to do that were
exciting, new ideas were starting to develop and people felt invincible and overconfident believing
that the age that they are living right now won t ever go away or ever end. The main reason why
people called it the Roaring Twenties was that there was a rise in consumerism and lots of people were
encouraged through media to buy new products and spend more on things that advertisement persuade
them to buy. Advertisements increased sales and with that knowledge in industries people were

Child Soldiers Amnesty
Should Child Soldiers be Granted Amnesty or Should they be Prosecuted? Although not everyone
knows it, there is a huge tragedy that is, and has been, going on even at this exact moment. That
tragedy is children being taken out of their ordinary lives, whether by force or not, away from their
families and into battle. Despite how much these children went through in the wars, the question still
remains: once the war is over, should they be granted amnesty, or be prosecuted? The answer to this
comes from thorough research. Child soldiers should be granted amnesty because they are unaware of
what they are doing, they need help rather than prosecution, and many are forced to fight.
The first reason why child soldiers should be legally forgiven ... Show more content on

The side that argues prosecuting the child soldiers says kids were given the option to stay or leave, and
most chose to stay. That is only partly true. It is true that they are given the option. Yet, the children
indirectly forced to stay. Because they have become addicted to the drugs the warlords gave them,
they are now dependent on them for those drugs and simply cannot leave, as it reads on
debatewise.org. Also, Ishmael Beah points out that through the war, they have gained a connection to
their commanders and fellow soldiers. For some, including Ishmael, it is the only family they have
left. So, they may, indeed, choose to stay, but not for the reason the many believe. Instead of staying
for the fighting, the stay for of family. Those who argue that child soldiers should be considered the
perpetrators also say that if we grant amnesty to the soldiers, there would be no justice for the victims
they killed. This is completely agreeable and understandable. It is agreeable that there should be
punishment given in order to fulfill justice for the victims. However, in order for justice to be fully
satisfied, the children should not be the ones punished, but rather, the warlords who wish to come to
the US from their country of origin. The warlords drug the child soldiers and kill those who do not
follow orders. They also force some to join. If child soldiers were

1.18 M M s Lab
Purpose: To practice direct and indirect measurement
Introduction: Do you think you could measure the average thickness of a sample of M Ms without
directly measuring selected M Ms? The answer is yes, and in this activity you will make direct and
indirect measurements of the thickness of M Ms. You will compare the results and evaluate the
reliability of each method of measurement. Be sure to view the tutorial on the proper use of the vernier
caliper. Please re visit the information on when to cite sources.
Since a graduated cylinder is usually used for liquid measurement, students think they need to put
water in the cylinder. This is not true for this activity. The graduated cylinder will be kept clean and
dryfor this activity. It is also important to remember that in the metric system, one mL is the same
volume as one cubic centimeter (1 ml = 1 cm3).
Materials: none
Pictures will be provided of the experiment. Materials used in obtaining the pictures are a bag of
regular (NOT peanut) M Ms (about 8 oz), plastic vernier caliper, and 100 ml plastic graduated
cylinder.
Procedure:
Start with a clean and dry 100 ml plastic graduated cylinder. Add M Ms until the graduated cylinder is
about 3/4 full. Gently tap the graduated cylinder to settle the M Ms. Read the volume of M Ms in cm3
and record the value in Data Table 1.
Pour the M Ms onto a clean, dry table or other flat surface. Use your hands to

Captain Nemo
The horrors of losing a friend, a partner, and children are a devastating blow to a person s way of life.
Captain Nemo has lost all of his family and has lost good men on the nautilus. This could be the
reason for acting childish, but some people can t usually make that connection in this time period.
They can make the connection to death, but they cannot make it on how Nemo s family s death. His
family died because of the British government and that s why Captain Nemo has a strong hatred for
society because they taken away the people he loved and actually cared for. After his family death, he

One of the main reasons he goes to the sea is because he dies in the sea. He loves the feel for the

an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides. The sea is only the
embodiment of a supernatural and wonderful existence. It is nothing but love and emotion; it is the
Living Infinite. (Nemo) Nemo still has care for his life, but when he hears or sees that one of his crew

The Causes and Effects of Deforestation in Tropical Rainforests
Tropical rainforests are the most alive places on earth. Covering less than 12% of the land s surface,
the rainforests are home to more than half of all living species (Lewis, 4). 90% of all non primates
reside in tropical rainforests. Two thirds of known plants, 40% birds of prey, and 80% of all insects are
found only in tropical rainforests. Of the 2.5 to 5 million animals species thought to exist, only about
one half have been identified to date. The vast majority of rainforests are found in Brazil (Amazon),
South Asia, Africa, and Central America. (WRM, 16).
The two main types of rainforest are equatorial rainforests and ... Show more content on

Most rainforest life grows and dwells in this layer. It is a tangled mass of vines, treetops, and other
plants, and rises about 100 130 feet above the floor. The understorey rises about 50 80 feet, and it is
made up of shrubs, bushes, seedlings, and saplings. Because of a lack of light, the forest floor is
typically bare. Only some scattering of leaves, decaying plant matter, and other small plants can be
found on the rainforest floor. (Lewis, 16).
Each layer of the rainforest is a unique habitat, and animals from one layer rarely venture into another
one. Mammals such as elephants, deer, and tiger dwell on the forest floor. Primates such as gibbons,
howler monkeys, and chimpanzees dwell in trees. Other tree dwellers include sloth, squirrels, mice.
One out of three bird species in the world nest in rainforests about 2,600 species in all. These exotic
birds, such as toucans, hornbills, and fly catchers, form a massive array of color against the green
background. (Lewis, 20 21).
Relationships between organisms in the rainforest is a complex web of intimate connections and
interdependencies. For example, insects pollinate a large variety of plants, which in turn are food for
other insects and herbivores. Insects and herbivores are food for birds and carnivores. These predators
keep populations in check as well as recycle nutrients to plants

criminology Essay
This essay is going to discuss the causes of crime and evaluate the theories of criminalisation using
one theory for each of the following themes. The themes are labelling and deviant identity of
criminalisation, theory of delinquency and criminalisation, theory of political economy and
criminalisation, and finally radical theory of criminalisation. This essay will also show some of the
weaknesses of each of the theories used for these themes.
The first theme is labelling and deviant identity theory of criminalisation, one of the main contributors
to this theory was Howard Becker who in 1963 wrote the book Outsiders which provided the
foundations of labelling theory. Becker looked at how social groups created deviance by creating the

Sykes and Matza state that there is five contributory factors to the rationalisation process these are
denial of responsibility, denial of injury, denial of the victim, condemnation of the condemners, and
appeal to the higher loyalties. Denial of responsibility is when a delinquent will blame another group
for his criminal act such as his parents did not give them a good upbringing or his school let him
down, they look at themselves as the victim. Denial of injury is when they rationalise there action
because nobody was hurt, for example vandalism or shoplifting from a large store chain who they
believe can afford the lose. Denial of the victim is when they state that the victim deserved it.
Condemnation of the condemners they blame the other group for there actions and try to deflect
responsibility and appeal to higher loyalties they are fighting for the ethical good. Chambliss and
Snider state that capitalism is the main contributor to delinquency as we strive to achieve personal
wealth and gain an individual who does not achieve this feel justified in delinquent behaviour.
Theory of political economy and criminalisation this looks at how capitalism can shape delinquent and
deviant behaviour. Chambliss argues :
The heart of the capitalist economic system is the protection of private property, which is, by
definition, the cornerstone upon which capitalist economies function. It is not surprising, then to find
that criminal law reflects this basic

In my self assessment, I scored highest in the area of Legal Environment: EEO and Diversity
Management (21). I scored the lowest in the area of Staffing (10). I m not surprised I scored the
highest in Legal Environment because I am more interested applying the rules/laws. Even where I
currently work, I make sure that everyone is fairly treated because if an instance does occur, I am the
type of person who will speak up for what s right. In the workplace, it is important that the employees
are treated equally because if they are not then it will affect their performance and they will eventually
leave the organization if no action is taken. I scored the lowest in the area of Staffing because I

How Does Harry Lime Use Dutch Angles In The Third Man
Harry Lime (Orson Welles), the anti hero of the film, fakes his own death and finds himself a home in
the sewers in which is here, coincidentally, where his life actually ends. The Third Man, released in
1949 and directed by Carol Reed, keeps the viewer questioning almost the entire time, even when
Lime makes himself present. Through the lighting, Dutch angles, symbolism, physical setting and
political setting, this film allows the viewers to fully experience the disturbed and the mysterious of
the film created world within. In a shadowy doorway, the viewers can see a dark figure, almost
perfectly hidden besides the legs and feet. Through a wide shot, viewers are shown the wet streets and

The film opens with a narrator telling the audience that he really got to know Vienna during the classic
period of the black market . He states that it would run anything if people wanted it enough . During
this narration, the audience is shown close ups of the hands of people who are illegally trading. This is
both men and women, some have a marital ring on their fingers. This displays that this market was
used by all people, including families. Through symbolism, a theme of morality is seen in the film.
Within the scene when the two are in the Ferris wheel, Harry asks Holly if he would feel any pity if
one of those dots stopped moving and if Holly was offered $20,000 for each of those dots to stop
moving whether he would calculate how many dots he could afford to spare . Within the black market,
Harry spared many, he was not amateur but morally, he was a shameful human being. What is
interesting about the question Harry asks is that it is one that causes the audience to reflect on their

The Main Causes Of The Woes Of Math Anxiety
The Woes of Math Anxiety Math anxiety is the phenomenon that affects may people, causing them to
feel anxiety or stress when faced with anything related to math. Math anxiety can potentially affect
anyone with the condition at any point in their lives, but it is most prominent within the classroom, as
that is when the math is the most stressful. Three of the main causes of math anxiety are: public
exposure, the influence of teachers, and time deadlines (Curtain Phillips, 2017). Once the causes are
fully understood, a method to overcome them can be created. Firstly, it is important to understand
when someone is suffering from math anxiety. Some symptoms are: passive behavior, a feeling of
being alone, a lack of confidence and panic during tests (Oxford 2017). ( In complete paragraph)
Public exposure refers to a student being publicly wrong, such as when called upon a by a teacher to
answer a question. This can lead to many students, especially those with math anxiety to not speak up
during class as to not make a fool of themselves. Sometimes in even worse cases, a student has been
reprimanded or scolded by a teacher in the past which would cause them to become weary or even
scared of answering a question in class (Oxford 2017). The best way to overcome this issue would be
with positive reinforcement. Placing great focus on their success while keeping criticisms of their
failure constructive gives the student the message that it is ok to be wrong, as no one is correct every

not to launch decision of a new product line of fresh whole grain pizza by using some forecasts and
financial analysis. According to the analysis, launching the new product line is a profitable business
and it exceeds the minimum business requirements which is $18,5M retail market ($12M wholesale)
but according to the market researches, customers think that the product is too expensive and it should

Some of the data are already in the case and some of the assumptions related with Pasta research are
also valid for pizza case, because BASES drew on prior experience with products of similar price,
nutrition and target consumer characteristics while determining these values.
Without knowing actual product quality, three scenarios are created, one each for mediocre, average,
and excellent product.
Volume of basic kit and complementary toppings are projected separately. Eckstein estimated that
wholesale volumes needed to exceed $12M to meet the company s return requirements. This means
minimum business requirement is $18,5M.
According to the calculations based on these assumptions and data, even if the product quality is
below the expectations, minimum business requirements can be achieved. So, financially it is a
profitable product and TruEarth should launch it. 6. Market Research Analysis
According to the market researches(Exhibit 3 and Exhibit 7); demand on pasta is greater than the
pizza but target households for pizza is above the target of pasta market.
When we compare the test results (Exhibit 8) with the findings for pasta (Exhibit 4), the main
difference is about the price of the product, many of the testers think that new pizza concept is too
expensive and they also think that

Discipline
Discipline
Discipline is the process of teaching the child what type of behavior is acceptable and what type is not
acceptable, it teaches a child to follow rules. Discipline may involve both punishment, such as a time
out, and, more importantly, rewards. It sounds so straightforward, yet every parent becomes frustrated
at one time or another with issues surrounding children and discipline.
Every parent wants their children to be happy, respectful, respected by others, and able to find their
place in the world as well behaved adults. Nobody wants to be accused of raising a spoiled brat. Our
responsibility as a parent is to help our child become self reliant, respectful, and self controlled.

But our goal should not be to turn him into someone he is not.
As my children grew and began to understand the connection between actions and consequences, I
started communicating the rules of our family s home, explained what I expect of them.
Even when disciplining my children I show respect they are more likely to respect me, other family
members, and other people in their life. If I lose it or overreact with disrespect, I apologize. Actually I
behave the way I want them to behave.
For instance, the first time my 3 year old son used pencil to decorate the bedroom wall, I discussed
why that s not allowed and what will happen if he will do it again he will have to help clean the wall
and will not be able to use the pencils for the rest of the day. I explained also that pencils are for paper
only and not for wall.
In other words I establish this kind of I set the rules and you re expected to listen or accept the
consequences standard. Consistency is the key to effective discipline, and it s important to decide what
the rules are and then uphold them. Timeouts also can work well for kids at this age, however I didn t
give them timeouts.
I always reward good behaviors. I know how positive effect my praise can have discipline is not just
about punishment but also about recognizing good behavior.

The Legacy Of Napoleon Bonaparte And The French Revolution
Napoleon Bonaparte was a military general and the an emperor of France who is now considered one
of the world s greatest and one of the world s most controversial military leaders. Napoleon
revolutionized military organization, sponsored the Napoleonic Code, and also reorganized education
and established the long lived Napoleon code with the papacy. ( pbs.org , nov 27, 2016) Napoleon s
many reformations left a lasting mark on the institutions of France and of much of western Europe.

France only a little larger than it had been at the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, he was

This argument is ridiculous; Bart Simpson is as creative as creative gets. In this chapter, Conard is first

from what King was trying to... The enemy is no longer the southern bigot but the enemy is the man in

world is filled with bad and no matter how much good you do once you stop preaching the bad comes
back That is exactly the way that Bart and Nietzsche think they are worried about living a pointless
life so they go with all the bad in the world and run with it. They want their actions to artistically bring
out what the world is really made up of.
On the other hand of Bart is his sister Lisa. Lisa lives the conformist life; trying to change the world

Dance Of The Call Bells Essay
When admitted to a hospital patients may feel they have little control over their situation and the
surrounding environment. Using a call bell to meet their needs is perhaps one of a few things that
gives patients a feeling that they still have some control. The title of the article Dance of the Call
Bells: Using Ethnography to Evaluate Patient Satisfaction with Quality of Care, suggests that the key
phenomenon of the study was the evaluation of patients satisfaction with quality of care they received
in terms of their experience in the use of call bells (Deitrick, Bokovoy, Glenn, Panik, 2006). The title
did not describe the population, group or community under study, other than stating that the
population was patients . The title did not state that phenomenon was also looked at and analyzed
through perspectives of family members and staff, nor did it mention that the study was done on a med
surgical unit.
The abstract of the study clearly and concisely summarized the main features of the report. It stated
that the study was conducted as a qualitative, ethnographic research. Then, it briefly described the
problems associated with call bells and how these problems affected patients perceptions regarding the
quality of care. It explained that the study identified three interrelated themes regarding
communication through call bells including answering the call bell, communicating the patient s
request to the appropriate health care provider and following through with the

The Civil Of The American Civil Justice System
The Civil Procedure Rules aim was to supply simply expressed rules in order to make the civil justice
system accessible, fair and efficient . In order to assess the extent to which they have provided this it
will require an assessment of the Overriding objective of the CPR, the use of pro action protocols, and
an analysis of judicial case management. Assessing these parts of the CPR will enable an evaluation of
whether the CPR emphasis in preparing cases for settlement, instead of preparing cases for trial, may
have caused a quicker and more effective mechanism for settling disputes. The CPR were introduced
in 1998 with an accompanying practice direction. They were introduced after Lord Woolf s Access to
Justice Report which stated that the Civil Justice system had problems of cost, delays and complexity
which has created an injustice to the Civil Justice system . CPR r.1.1 (1) states that there overriding
objective is to enable the court to deal with cases justly while at a proportionate cost . The CPR
requires the courts and the parties to further the overriding objective . One instance where the parties
are to further the overriding objective would be through the removal of arguments likely to fail. For
instance, in the case of Buxton v Mills Owens it was held that the legal adviser s parties will be in
breach of their obligations under 1.3 if they advance arguments which they know are bound to fail .

Why I Am A Scientist
Live the life you ve imagined , wrote on cover page of my notebook gave by my mentor Dr. Xu. When
I was six, I witnessed my aunt suffering from serious rheumatoid arthritis and nobody even know why
it happened. I imagined one day I can be a scientist to find out the causes for all those brutal diseases
and fight against them. This compass navigates my career path and leads me to where I am right now,
a biology student in University of Kansas. My professional journey started at 2007, my freshman year
in Wuhan University, a top ranked biology program in China. I and my teammates were catching
turbellarian all over the campus trying to find out the secrets of tissue regeneration. After that, I
initiated a project to isolate bacteria strains from soil to reduce phosphorus in water and prohibit blue
algae caused by pesticide in river and lake, which got me funded by WU undergraduate research fund
in 2008. These small adventures helped me to explore my capabilities and build confidence about
doing research. However I also realized that to make a difference in human health, passion is one
hand, knowledge is the other. To better prepare myself for a future in biology scientific research, I
joined Dr. Guo s lab in WU which focused on human skeletal development in 2009 and quickly found
the question that I care about and willing to answer: how cancer happened? Specifically, I was
interested in studying gene post transcriptional regulation networks in cancer. I chose to study

Different Theories From The Field Of Marriage And Family...
The clinical case scenario presented can be approached from a variety of different theories from the
field of marriage and family therapy. While each approach carries with it specific techniques and
strategies for invoking change, I would assert that no one approach is inherently better than the other.
A common characteristic among all the theories is that there effectiveness depends highly on the depth
of knowledge of the approach, skill in the application of the strategies for change, and creativity of the
therapist. With this in mind, the following text will be a separate application of MRI Brief Therapy
and Strategic Therapy to the provided clinical case scenario. In describing the techniques and

effects on other problem areas within the clients life, those that may not be readily brought to the

three ways in which the problem behavior or issue is maintained. It is hypothesized that if the
individual would give up their solutions to the problem, it will resolve itself. The following have been
outlined as problem maintaining behaviors: attempting to solve a problem that is non existent, denying
the existence of the problem, or solving a problem on the wrong level (first order change vs. second
order change) (Watzlawick, 1974). First order change would be a change in how the problem game is
played, for example, if individuals were playing with checkers pieces, but decided to use chess pieces
instead while still using the rules of checkers. The pieces may have changed, but the overall rules
remain the same. If these same individuals were to learn how to play chess, this would constitute a
second order change as the rules of the game have now changed. Consequently a second order change
can be described as a change of change.
There are several techniques available to the MRI Brief therapist in reaching this change of change.
These include prescribing the symptom, prescribing restraint, instructing the

The Culture Of Iran Is A Major Element Of Cultural Competence
Cultural awareness is a major element of cultural competence as defined by the National Center for
Cultural Competence (NCCC). It is the first and foundational element because without it, it is virtually
impossible to acquire the attitudes, skills, and knowledge that are essential to cultural competence
(Goode). The focus of the paper will be to discuss the culture of Iran. Iran is located within the Middle
East centered just between the Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf. Even though Iran is not one of the
largest countries, it is roughly smaller than Alaska in size. Iran has a long history of conflict dating all
the way to the time of the Romans. A multitude of leaders dating back before the Roman era and
earlier have taken the responsibility of the task of leading Iran. Throughout the years, Iran was
involved in many conflicts while still today holding its own against other countries in the world. Iran
is located within the Middle East with the bordering countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iraq,
Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Turkey. As early as the period of the Romans, Iran had many types of
leaders, conflicts and enemies in the world. Their government structure is similar to most countries
such as the United States and Britain. The only difference they have one person that has the power
over almost everything, which is the Supreme Leader. Their untrained military, imported and outdated
weapons, and a small military force compared to most of the larger countries of

Qualitative Vs. Qualitative Analysis
Design:
The study will be done through qualitative line of inquiry. Qualitative data provides a prosperous,
thorough picture to be built up about why people act in certain ways, and their feelings about these
actions, which provides the researcher with a clear understanding of the data. Qualitative data is also
useful for studying limited data in depth; for the purpose of this study to be accomplished, the data
needs to be studied in depth. Thematizing meanings is one of few shared generic skills across
qualitative analysis (Holloway and Todres, 2003). The epistemological position of qualitative research
is interpretivist and this will be particularly helpful in attempting to understand the struggles faced by
female ex offenders when they re enter society and how they move past this to get back on their feet
(Bryman, 2012). Due to the nature of the research, secondary data analysis will be employed through
thematic analysis. Thematic analysis will be particularly useful in understanding how the women
desist from crime to sort out their lives and move on from a life of crime focuses on identifiable
themes and patterns of living and talk and aims to generate descriptions of strategies and behaviours
(Hammersmith and Atkinson, 1995). In addition, it will also assist in understanding how prison life
affects women s behaviour when they are released to enter back into society.

Standardized Intelligence Testing
What exactly is intelligence? Can it be measured precisely or is it a more indefinite concept? These
are queries that experts in fields of developmental psychology and cognition have pondered for a great
many years. At this point in time the definition of intelligence is accepted universally as ...the capacity
to understand the world, think with rationality, and use resources effectively when faced with
challenges (Feldman, Robert S. and Oriane Landry 212). This statement gives a fairly broad view on
the concept of intelligence and allows for the inclusiveness of interpretation. It is difficult to find one
set way of determining an individual s intelligence because of the generality of the topic.
Experts, Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon began the quest to find a singular way to measure
intelligence in order to determine which children needed the help of remedial programs to succeed in
their scholarly studies. This is where the first of three standardized intelligence tests came to fruition.
The Stanford Binet Intelligence Scales (SB5) focused on acquiring the intelligence quotient of an

The United States Of The Industrial Revolution
Earth provides enough to satisfy every man s needs, but not every man s greed. Mahatma Gandhi
Since the start of the Industrial Revolution the United States of America has been dependent on
burning fossil fuels for energy. In 2015 nearly sixty seven percent of energy generated in the United
States was from fossil fuels including coal, natural gas, and petroleum. The United States had been
aware of a large abundance of natural gas in shale rock formations thousands of feet below the
surface; however, when they first found these rocks around 1940 there was no technology or tools
advanced enough to drill into these rocks, until the 1970s and 1980s. Companies worked endlessly
finding a way to allow shale rocks to release the gas that they held. Companies eventually came up
with a practice called hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking; this process utilizes water pressure
to fracture or break a rock in order to release and collect fuel such as gas or oil. In recent years,
companies have mixed sand, chemicals and other proponents to retrieve the maximum amount of gas
that each drilling site has to offer. A heated debate has begun concerning these mixtures and the money
involved in fracking. While one side asserts that fracking should be banned because of potential
environmental damage produced by the fracking mixtures, others claim that fracking should continue
because of potential gains it could provide for the economy in the United States.

behavior. Nursing process continues with nursing diagnosis, goal setting, interventions, including a

in nursing practice, Roy s Adaptation Model (RAM) guides nurses in developing effective care
through the use of reasoning, critical thinking, and decision making. With a focus on adaptation, RAM
can be utilized as a framework to conceptualize and plan individualized patient care or may be applied

the nursing process, patients are assisted in adapting, or coping, to changes within their environments.
The process begins with an assessment of the patient s adaptive behavior as well as stimuli in the

Symphony Number 5 Essay
In the closing scene of Act II of Swan Lake, Siegfried lifts Odette high into the air right when the
piano forte string hit is played; Odette is slowly lowered as the famous oboe solo beginning on an F
sharp gracefully drops down to a B. In Beethoven s Symphony Number 5, the entire symphony is
silent while the oboist has an improvised solo in a still concert hall. In the Symphony in C by Bizet,
the oboe solo is embellished with beautiful sixteenth note turns, which still manage to sound graceful.
These solos will forever be remembered in the history of music, whether or not people know the
musician or even the instrument playing said solo or not. The oboe s piercing yet beautiful sound is
caused by the double reed that is used instead of mouthpiece like other woodwind instruments. A
double reed is simply a piece of cane that is folded over, tied to a tube of cork called a staple, trimmed,
and shaved. This sounds like a simple process, but it actually stops many oboists from pursuing music

Arranged Marriage Sociology
When comparing many sociological perspectives and theories against the idea of arranged marriages
in India there are many conclusions that can be drawn. In specific, feminism, functionalism, and the
conflict theory all point out very interesting facts. Some of these theories do a much better job in terms
of accounting for this phenomena; which is not surprising as we looks at the long and detailed history
of the subject. However, there is no sole theory that can truly be linked to account for the total
occurrence of such a subject. As you will see, there are many factors that come into play when an
arranged marriage takes place. Not only are the couple being married affected, but the families of both

This theory is focused on the inequalities of different groups in a society, and on the level of power
associated to these groups (Mooney, 2000). In the case of arranged marriages in India, there can be
said to be many groups that both contribute and are created with unequal power through the process.
To begin with, the parents potentially hold the future of their child in their hands as they are the ones
who choose the significant other (Sandhya, 2013). In the interest of wealth, power and security, most
families choose a person with a significant amount of higher status in the society because through the
marriage, ties between the families strengthen and so do both of their overall prestige (Sandhya,
2013). It can be said that families marry into one another, and this creates economic inequalities as
these groups are formed. This idea of marriage being a family affair all starts with people who hold
more power than others, the parents versus the child, and end by creating an even larger group that
differs from many other others in that country (Sandhya, 2013). Overall, I believe that the conflict
theory can be said to best describe the idea of arranged marriages because of the nature that

Difference Between New England And The Chesapeake Colonies
The difference between the colonies of New England and the Chesapeake region were many. First,
they settlers who immigrated to the new world had different reasons for doing so. For the Chesapeake
colonies, including Virginia and Maryland, profit was the aim. After the introduction of tobacco to
Europe by Columbus at the end of the fifteenth century, there was a large and steadily growing
demand for the crop. Investors in England decided to set up colonies in the Americas for the purpose
of growing and profiting from tobacco. On the other hand, the colonies of New England were set up
primarily for religious reasons. Although there were some that sought profit in New England, most
settlers sought liberty and freedom of worship. English separatists, who vehemently disagreed with the
way the Church of England was set up, left Holland and came to America on the Mayflower. They
landed in modern Massachusetts and established the Plymouth Colony. Rhode Island was also
founded on a religious basis after Roger Williams and his fellow dissenters were exiled from
Massachusetts. It became a haven for Quakers, Jews, Baptists and members of other minority
religions. A second difference in the colonies of the Chesapeake and of New England comes in the
basis of their economies. As mentioned above, Virginia was founded in order to grow tobacco.
Maryland s foremost crop was also tobacco. Also, the way tobacco was cultivated was important to
the Chesapeake colonies. Plantation owners were in

Example Of Conduit Metaphor
2. Highlighting and Hiding
When explaining even more thoroughly the systematicity feature, Lakoff and Johnson referred to
Michael Reddy s (1979) conduit metaphor : it is when a part of our experience is hidden by a
metaphorical concept; He believes that our language about language is organized or even designed as
the following metaphor:
Ideas (or meanings) are perceived as objects , Linguistic expressions are perceived as containers and
communication is perceived as sending . This means that when someone wants to say an expression
(the object), he puts concepts into words (which are the container) and sends them along a conduit to
the person who is hearing him and who takes the concept out of the words which means out of the
containers. Examples of the conduit metaphor are: I gave you that idea , it is difficult to put my ideas

Types of Conceptual Metaphors according to Lakoff Johnson
Lakoff Johnson define conceptual metaphors as understanding and experiencing one kind of thing in
terms of another and argue that the way human beings think and talk is largely metaphorical. Lakoff
and Johnson prove that humans often speak in metaphors when they talk about any concept without
noticing it. Conceptual metaphors play a very important role in our lives and combines both linguistic
and cognitive domains. They identified three categories of conceptual metaphors:
1. Orientational metaphors:
Oriental metaphors are metaphors in which concepts are given spatial orientation: up down, front
back, on off, central peripheral. For example, HAPPY IS UP and SAD IS DOWN ; the fact that the
concept happy is oriented up and the concept sad is oriented down leads to English expressions like I

Dna Forensics And The Human Genome
Before the 1980s, courts relied on testimony and eyewitness accounts as a main source of evidence.
Notoriously unreliable, these techniques have since faded away to the stunning reliability of DNA
forensics. In 1984, British geneticist Alec Jeffreys of the University of Leicester discovered an
interesting new marker in the human genome. Most DNA information is the same in every human, but
the junk code between genes is unique to every person. Junk DNA used for investigative purposes can
be found in blood, saliva, perspiration, sexual fluid, skin tissue, bone marrow, dental pulp, and hair
follicles (Phillips, 2008). By analyzing this junk code, Jeffreys found certain sequences of 10 to 100
base pairs repeated multiple times. These tandem repeats are also the same for all people, but the
number of repetitions is highly variable. Before this discovery, a drop of blood at a crime scene could
only reveal a person s blood type, plus a few proteins unique to certain people. Now DNA forensics
can expose a person s gender, race, susceptibility to diseases, and even propensity for high aggression
or drug abuse (Phillips, 2008). More importantly, the certainty of DNA evidence is extremely
powerful in court. Astounded at this technology s almost perfect accuracy, the FBI changed the name
of its Serology Unit to the DNAAnalysis Unit in 1988 when they began accepting requests for DNA
comparisons (Lewis, 1989).
There are thirteen standard tandem repeats used in modern forensics, and

Saturn Devouring His Son Essay
Saturn Devouring His Son is a 146 by 83 centimeter oil painting by the Spanish artist Francisco de
Goya y Lucientes. The painting was made between the years of 1819 to 1823 as a part of his series
entitled The Black Paintings .
Goya was a romantic painter and printmaker who was born in 1746 in Fuendetodos, Spain, on the 30th
of March. His parents were Jose Benito de Goya y Franque and Gracia de Lucientes y Salvador.
Lucientes s artistic style and the mysterious themes of his vivid masterpieces leave modern artists in
awe. The character and personality of Goya can be vividly seen through his astounding artwork. He is
known by many modern artists to be one of the very last master painters of his time.
His piece, Saturn Devouring His Son , refers to Saturn, a mythological god of Ancient Rome. Saturn
was thought by most to be the god of wealth, agriculture, and dissolution, among other things. In later
developments, Saturn became thought to also have domain over time. He was thought to be in his
reign during the Golden Age, which was a time of great economic success in Rome, when the people
did not have to work. In Roman mythology, Saturn had children and grew to fear a prophecy that
stated one of his sons would grow to be powerful enough to overthrow him, as he did with his own
father, Caelus. Hence, he ate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These non commissioned paintings portrayed horrible, gruesome, fantastical, or otherwise morbid
imagery uncommon in paintings at this time in Spain s artistic history, and were never meant for
display. It is common of The Black Paintings to invoke a sense of dread in the examiner. The paintings
likely disturbed the citizens of his village, yet they remained upon the plaster walls of Goya s
farmhouse, completely untouched, for fifty years. They were transferred to canvas in 1874 to be held
in the Museo del

  • 2. Dalton Conley You May Ask Yourself Summary Dalton Conley describes labeling theory in Chapter 6 of You May Ask Yourself as the belief that individuals subconsciously notice how others see or label them, and their reactions to those labels over time form the basis of their self identity (Conley, 2011:203). In other words, over time, a person s self identity changes to fit the character other people impose upon them. An action itself isn t necessarily deviant unless society decides it is. Labeling theory can go either way, either positive or negative. While not necessarily deviant, an example of the self fulfilling (or Pygmalion) prophecy created by labeling is from You May Ask Yourself, Chapter 13. Conley (2011) makes reference to a study by Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson who administered IQ tests to a group of students. They then proceeded to randomly select a fifth of the students for their experiment, and communicated to their teachers that they were particularly bright (basically labelling them.) At the end of the year they retested all of the students, and found that the ones they had singled out as higher potential ended up performing better on the test than their peers. The researchers found that the label they had attached to the students led to the teachers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Schur (1980, 1984) who described labeling as a social construction of culture, which means that it is artificially defined by society. This indicates that proper concepts will be destitute in the face of ever changing eccentricity of social standards (Hashem, 2015:121). Society dictates what is and what is not considered deviant behavior, and treats the person accordingly (whether positive or negative. Labeling tends to lead to stigmatization. Noelle Vance wrote in her article titled Labeling Theory that When relationships with parents, teachers, or friends are weakened as a result of formal stigmatization, individuals are more likely to seek affiliation with criminal ... • 3. Luck Egalitarianism Summary In reaction to gross and compounding economic disparities in the international sphere, cosmopolitan philosophers like Moellendorf have addressed the international state, claiming that the degree of inequality is unjustifiable. Moellendorf operates with a Rawlsian understanding of ethical relations, but expands this notion from the domestic sense into the international sense, claiming that the degree of globalization is sufficient such that it creates an association in which the interdependence is sufficiently strong, largely non voluntary and constitutive of a significant part of the background rules that govern members lives, forming the basis of duties for distributive justice. From this understanding for the need for global distributive justice, Moellendorf claims that the main strategy to address this inequality is through a global progressive tax. Moellendorf s conception, however, overstates the degree to which globalization has created international cohesiveness. Though a progressive tax would certainly address global inequality, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Luck egalitarianism refers to the arbitrary methods by which various states came to be in possession of their resources and the need for a system of redistribution similar to Moellendorf s global tax in order to address the systems of inequality arising from arbitrarily having more or less valuable resources. Wenar, however, disagrees with the notion of a global tax, citing concerns over sentiments of distrust in states recently liberated from former colonial states. In response to this distrust, Wenar proposes a system of popular resource sovereignty, in which the value derived from a nation s resources are not subject to global taxation, but rather are directed toward the benefit of the nation s people rather than a nation s ... • 5. Child Soldiers Amnesty Should Child Soldiers be Granted Amnesty or Should they be Prosecuted? Although not everyone knows it, there is a huge tragedy that is, and has been, going on even at this exact moment. That tragedy is children being taken out of their ordinary lives, whether by force or not, away from their families and into battle. Despite how much these children went through in the wars, the question still remains: once the war is over, should they be granted amnesty, or be prosecuted? The answer to this comes from thorough research. Child soldiers should be granted amnesty because they are unaware of what they are doing, they need help rather than prosecution, and many are forced to fight. The first reason why child soldiers should be legally forgiven ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The side that argues prosecuting the child soldiers says kids were given the option to stay or leave, and most chose to stay. That is only partly true. It is true that they are given the option. Yet, the children indirectly forced to stay. Because they have become addicted to the drugs the warlords gave them, they are now dependent on them for those drugs and simply cannot leave, as it reads on debatewise.org. Also, Ishmael Beah points out that through the war, they have gained a connection to their commanders and fellow soldiers. For some, including Ishmael, it is the only family they have left. So, they may, indeed, choose to stay, but not for the reason the many believe. Instead of staying for the fighting, the stay for of family. Those who argue that child soldiers should be considered the perpetrators also say that if we grant amnesty to the soldiers, there would be no justice for the victims they killed. This is completely agreeable and understandable. It is agreeable that there should be punishment given in order to fulfill justice for the victims. However, in order for justice to be fully satisfied, the children should not be the ones punished, but rather, the warlords who wish to come to the US from their country of origin. • 25. Qualitative Vs. Qualitative Analysis Design: The study will be done through qualitative line of inquiry. Qualitative data provides a prosperous, thorough picture to be built up about why people act in certain ways, and their feelings about these actions, which provides the researcher with a clear understanding of the data. Qualitative data is also useful for studying limited data in depth; for the purpose of this study to be accomplished, the data needs to be studied in depth. Thematizing meanings is one of few shared generic skills across qualitative analysis (Holloway and Todres, 2003). The epistemological position of qualitative research is interpretivist and this will be particularly helpful in attempting to understand the struggles faced by female ex offenders when they re enter society and how they move past this to get back on their feet (Bryman, 2012). Due to the nature of the research, secondary data analysis will be employed through thematic analysis. Thematic analysis will be particularly useful in understanding how the women desist from crime to sort out their lives and move on from a life of crime focuses on identifiable themes and patterns of living and talk and aims to generate descriptions of strategies and behaviours (Hammersmith and Atkinson, 1995). These are queries that experts in fields of developmental psychology and cognition have pondered for a great many years. At this point in time the definition of intelligence is accepted universally as ...the capacity to understand the world, think with rationality, and use resources effectively when faced with challenges (Feldman, Robert S. and Oriane Landry 212). This statement gives a fairly broad view on the concept of intelligence and allows for the inclusiveness of interpretation. It is difficult to find one set way of determining an individual s intelligence because of the generality of the topic. Mahatma Gandhi Since the start of the Industrial Revolution the United States of America has been dependent on burning fossil fuels for energy. In 2015 nearly sixty seven percent of energy generated in the United States was from fossil fuels including coal, natural gas, and petroleum. The United States had been aware of a large abundance of natural gas in shale rock formations thousands of feet below the surface; however, when they first found these rocks around 1940 there was no technology or tools advanced enough to drill into these rocks, until the 1970s and 1980s. Companies worked endlessly finding a way to allow shale rocks to release the gas that they held. Companies eventually came up with a practice called hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking; this process utilizes water pressure to fracture or break a rock in order to release and collect fuel such as gas or oil. In recent years, companies have mixed sand, chemicals and other proponents to retrieve the maximum amount of gas that each drilling site has to offer. A heated debate has begun concerning these mixtures and the money involved in fracking. While one side asserts that fracking should be banned because of potential environmental damage produced by the fracking mixtures, others claim that fracking should continue because of potential gains it could provide for the economy in the United States. In Beethoven s Symphony Number 5, the entire symphony is silent while the oboist has an improvised solo in a still concert hall. These solos will forever be remembered in the history of music, whether or not people know the musician or even the instrument playing said solo or not. The oboe s piercing yet beautiful sound is caused by the double reed that is used instead of mouthpiece like other woodwind instruments. A double reed is simply a piece of cane that is folded over, tied to a tube of cork called a staple, trimmed, and shaved. This theory is focused on the inequalities of different groups in a society, and on the level of power associated to these groups (Mooney, 2000). In the case of arranged marriages in India, there can be said to be many groups that both contribute and are created with unequal power through the process. To begin with, the parents potentially hold the future of their child in their hands as they are the ones who choose the significant other (Sandhya, 2013). In the interest of wealth, power and security, most families choose a person with a significant amount of higher status in the society because through the marriage, ties between the families strengthen and so do both of their overall prestige (Sandhya, 2013). It can be said that families marry into one another, and this creates economic inequalities as these groups are formed. This idea of marriage being a family affair all starts with people who hold more power than others, the parents versus the child, and end by creating an even larger group that differs from many other others in that country (Sandhya, 2013). First, they settlers who immigrated to the new world had different reasons for doing so. For the Chesapeake colonies, including Virginia and Maryland, profit was the aim. After the introduction of tobacco to Europe by Columbus at the end of the fifteenth century, there was a large and steadily growing demand for the crop. Investors in England decided to set up colonies in the Americas for the purpose of growing and profiting from tobacco. On the other hand, the colonies of New England were set up primarily for religious reasons. Although there were some that sought profit in New England, most settlers sought liberty and freedom of worship. English separatists, who vehemently disagreed with the way the Church of England was set up, left Holland and came to America on the Mayflower. They landed in modern Massachusetts and established the Plymouth Colony. Rhode Island was also founded on a religious basis after Roger Williams and his fellow dissenters were exiled from Massachusetts. It became a haven for Quakers, Jews, Baptists and members of other minority religions. A second difference in the colonies of the Chesapeake and of New England comes in the basis of their economies. Notoriously unreliable, these techniques have since faded away to the stunning reliability of DNA forensics. In 1984, British geneticist Alec Jeffreys of the University of Leicester discovered an interesting new marker in the human genome. Most DNA information is the same in every human, but the junk code between genes is unique to every person. Junk DNA used for investigative purposes can be found in blood, saliva, perspiration, sexual fluid, skin tissue, bone marrow, dental pulp, and hair follicles (Phillips, 2008). By analyzing this junk code, Jeffreys found certain sequences of 10 to 100 base pairs repeated multiple times. These tandem repeats are also the same for all people, but the number of repetitions is highly variable. Before this discovery, a drop of blood at a crime scene could only reveal a person s blood type, plus a few proteins unique to certain people. Now DNA forensics can expose a person s gender, race, susceptibility to diseases, and even propensity for high aggression or drug abuse (Phillips, 2008). More importantly, the certainty of DNA evidence is extremely powerful in court. Astounded at this technology s almost perfect accuracy, the FBI changed the name of its Serology Unit to the DNAAnalysis Unit in 1988 when they began accepting requests for DNA comparisons (Lewis, 1989).
