Analysis of Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Essay
Mahalia Gauld January 18, 2011 MGMT 2850 Case Study #1 Exxon Valdez Situation in Brief: On
March 24, 1989, an Exxon supertanker spilled 11 million gallons of oil while traveling through the
pristine waters of Alaska s Prince William Sound. The consequences of this spill were detrimental and
continue to affect life today. The oil spill killed thousands of wildlife, extensively damaged a portion
of the beautiful Alaskan environment, and eventually affected the economy to global proportions.
Unfortunately, this tragedy could have been prevented. Lack of adequate safety efforts, enforcement,
and regulations all played a major role in this truly catastrophic event. However, Prince William
Sound s remote location made government and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Radar and monitoring were heavily used to enforce seriously among the tanking community. Goals
were aimed toward proper spill prevention and procedures with the Spill Prevention, Control, and
Countermeasures regulation in effect. This required every company to have a spill prevention plan,
with the proper equipment and employee training to handle such an occurrence. PRESENT While
safety regulations are still in effect, they are not enforced with rigor. The Coast Guard, Exxon, the
government, and employees are responsible for being able to perform their duties. This has not
occurred with the crew not trained in their position properly, the Coast Guard not enforcing traffic
laws, and the rejection of radar systems by the company of Exxon. These are examples of everyone
not looking out for the safety of themselves and others. FUTURE From this event, it is clear the future
will require strict safety regulations with strong enforcement from all agencies involved. It needs to be
focused on preparation and prevention of all oil spills. For example, the Coast Guard should do
accurate and timely check to ensure the equipment and staff is properly equipped for their journey.
Also, there needs to be a more thorough conversation and procedure between the ship and government
agency when reporting any type of emergency situation. Alternatives: 1. NO CHANGE Careless
safety regulations would continue to run the oil

Essay On Low Voter Turnout
It is often argued that the voter turnout is too low, especially when compared with turnout in other
democratic countries. There are several different factors that contribute to voter turnout in the US. It
can be expressed as a rate of the quantity of eligible voters, registered voters and the populace that is
politically mature enough to vote. Low voter turnout involves lack of participation and political
disengagement due to the belief that voting for a candidate will hardly change the public policies. To
measure the number of qualified voters, the voting qualified populace turnout is used. Registered voter
turnout is used to calculate the percentage of registered voter. When measured based on age and
population, it is the voting age population ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Texas has been reported to have the lowest number of voters in the presidential election in the US. In
2010, a survey conducted by the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life at the UT at Austin revealed
that Texas ranked last in the nation in voter turnout. It is recorded to be ranked 42nd in voter
registration and 49th in the number of people who contacted public officials (amarillo). One of the
main reason for low voter turnout in Texas is legal constraints. Compared to other states, Texas is one
of the restrictive states in its voting laws regarding things such as the poll tax, women suffrage, the
white primary and restriction on military vote. Moreover, more than 4 million people in Texas live in
poverty. Education and income are important determinants of electoral participation. Therefore, low
turnout rate is inevitable when poverty rate in Texas is high. Aside from that, Texas s political culture
is one of the main reason that contributes to low voter turnout.Texas is a mix of the traditionalistic and
individualistic. Their political values and belief discourage participation (Maxwell). Many Texan
believe that their vote plays a little role in politics. Texas keeps on passing laws that discourage
participation and cooperation. Overall, the absence of political will serves to exhaust the voting energy
in minorities. The voter turnout in Texas can be improved by providing better

Hennessey And Yellich Essay
The Hennessey and Yellich series by author Peter Turnbull is a police procedural that follows Chief
Inspector George Hennessey and his partner Detective Seargent Somerled Yellich. Hennessey is a
widower, whose wife died when their son Charles was a baby. The father and son lived together in the
house and garden that was designed by the wife. Charles grew up to be a husband, father, and solicitor.
Hennessey got a dog, walks to the pub, and reads military history books. He tells his wife about his
day while in the garden, and walks around the town to get places that he needs to go. Somerled Yellich
(his first name is pronounced Sorley) is married happily to his wife Sara, and they have a son named
Jeremy who has down syndrome. He is a happy man, both at his job and when he is home. The series
is a police procedural and it is set in York, England. The series is also considered cozy as the bodies

George Hennessey, a Chief Inspector, is working on a case trying to find a missing middle aged couple
named Max and Amanda. They vanished with out a trace recently, leaving behind a modest home and
children that are in adulthood. Hennessey draws the initial conclusion that there is some foul play
here. He is later called out to a crime scene on a local farm where a shallow grave is found, and in the
grave are two bodies. None other then his missing couple. This is the beginning of things for Detective
Inspector Hennessey and the rest of the police squad. One thing that Hennessey knows for sure is that
they were not killed because of a vast sum of money they had lost a quite sizable chunk of change
recently. They were both engaged in affairs that neither one knew about. What is odd too, is how the

How Did Grover Washington Develop
Growing up in downtown Buffalo, New York, Grover Washington Jr., named after his father Grover
Washington Sr., grew up to live with a musically talented family. His father played the tenor
saxophone, his mother sang in a choir, his older brother played the organ in a church choir, and his
younger brother played the drums. At the age of 10 when Grover Washington Jr. was just a little kid,
his father taught him the basic notes and a few songs on the saxophone, and that greatly influenced his
desire to grow up to become a musician just like the rest of his family. In 1965, when Grover
Washington Jr. was only 22 years old, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and stationed at Fort Dix,
New Jersey for 1 year. He did this instead of going to college, and as a result, he eventually dropped

founders of the smooth jazz genre. Over the course of his life he made some of the most memorable

to jazz music was his hit song, Mister Magic . This song is noted as being influential on Go go music
starting in the mid 1970s and the album that this song goes along with it topped both the soul and jazz
albums chart and peaked at number ten on the pop chart. In the 1980s through the 1990s, Grover
Washington Jr. was credited for giving the rise to a new batch of talent. He is known for bringing
Walter Beasley, Steve Cole, Pamela Williams, Najee, and Boney James and George Howard all to the
forefront. Although Washington s first three albums established him as a force of jazz and soul music,
it was his fourth album in 1974, Mister Magic, that proved a major commercial success. That was
another contribution that he made to jazz music and as a result, all four of these albums became very

Corruption In Victorian England
Appalled at the corruption of the English church in the late 16th and early 17th century, a group of
people known as separatists (or puritans) abandoned their mother country in search of a life in the
Americas in which they could practice their natural rights without the burden of fearing persecution.
While keeping to the general doctrines of the Christian faith, the puritans derived their individuality
from Calvinism, focusing on the concept of pre destination. After arriving in the Massachusetts Bay
and establishing government, the puritan leader John Winthrop declared that their puritan society
would serve as a shining beacon for all to look to as a model of guidance, a city on a hill. This belief

The Fractal Geometry Method of English Teaching in Kazakhstan
(Inspired by Mandelbrot s Chaos Theory) Almost all the second language learners in Kazakhstan have
the same schedule every day. They go to schools or universities where lessons are held in Russian or
in Kazakh, they attend additional classes to prepare for the exams also in Russian or may be in Kazakh
sometimes, they are on the job working mainly in Russian, they go to their English classes, may be
they start speaking English a little bit, but then they go home and revert back to their native tongue
again. May be they are making slow improvements in speaking English, but still it is not enough to be
fluent in English. The biggest problem for Kazakhstan students is that they almost never speak
English in their everyday lives. They can do it only attending English classes and only if their teacher
creates such opportunity, so that students can practice oral speech. Passive listening is okay, but
interacting is even better. It is of vital importance for the teachers to have students speak in the target
language as much as they can, stick to English. That is why teachers of the English in Kazakhstan
need practical, easy to implement, effective methods to increase the use of the English in the
classroom. One of the most effective methods for improving speaking skills is Fractal Geometry
method. The teacher provides students with How to questions and students need to write instructions
on how to perform everyday activities (How to cook perfect rice for 4 people?

Author Awnish Todi You re probably wondering what mindfulness and wellness, could possibly have
to do with each other? And it is indeed a good question. Somewhere in the early 70 s, when the world
was recovering from war and recession, there was some time to look around and be aware of the
overall situation. Clinical psychologists noticed that people were far less attentive to their
surroundings and almost oblivious to the things happening in their life with every passing second!
This may not seem like a problem when we talk on a second to second basis, but when we take into
account an entire day or week or even months, it becomes a form of unconscious neglect. We start
neglecting small things and soon we start neglecting important things. Mindfulness is a concept,
appropriated from ancient Buddhist roots, and clinically innovated by Jon Kabat Zinn. The idea of
mindfulness involves being aware moment to moment, of one s subjective conscious experience from
a first person perspective. It involves having absolute focus on our actions and as someone wisely

Solving The Costs And Benefits For Each Of Our Options
Eric Chien
GESM 120 _35386
Paper #1/ Topic #1
To be rational is to understand and calculate the costs and benefits for each of our options and make
the decision that maximizes the value and utility of of self interest. However, humans often behave
irrationally due to our emotions, morality and desire for immediate pleasure. Given the above
depiction, Dan Ariely argues that we will be acting irrational if we don t commit acts of thievery since
the expected benefits of committing the act obviously outweighs the cost given that nobody would
find out . His definition of rationality is more or less similar to what most economists believe in,
which is making decisions strictly based on the highest grossing financial benefits. Therefore, under
his definition of rationality and irrationality, we would be acting irrational by succumbing to our
morality and conscience, and not commit the act that would bring us the most economic benefits.
Under his assumption, there is no cost or risk of committing acts of thievery, then to be rational under
his definition would be to steal whatever there is out there as it s practically the same thing as drinking
water from a public water fountain.
However, putting Plato s views in the picture, Plato would certainly argue against the claim that Ariely
has proposed. This traces all the way back to the discussion about the value and necessity of justice in
our lives. In Book IX of the Republic, Plato points out and argues for the value and

Villa Rica Christian Church
On the fifth of February, I went to my church, Villa Rica Christian Church. In my church, there is a
nursery for kids ranging from birth to two. The first toy was a rectangular box that has shaped holes
on the lid. On the lid, there are four shapes triangle, square, star, and circle. The second toy, is a panel
with four different popups of Sesame Street characters. To trigger the popup, a kid has to either turn,
press, or push a button. The third toy is a child like abacus with five rows of beads that vary by colors
red, yellow, blue, green, and orange.
In the nursery, I examined toys aimed at the sensorimotor stage of cognitive development. This stage
includes actions based on reflexes and the transition to actions based on intentions. Actions that are
satisfying are repeated by the child through a process called primary circular reactions. Soon after this
first stage, the child moves on to the secondary circular reactions or actions that have an effect on the
environment. After experiencing both of these kind of reactions, the child then advances into more
intentional actions. The child begins to have goal directed behavior and curiosity which leads to
experimenting. Lastly, the child will begin to understand symbolic problem solving and object
permanence.

Female Power In To Kill A Mockingbird
How much power do women have in our society? Many people argue that women do not really posses
much power or contribute to our society. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee tries to emphasize the
ways women in the novel control and contribute to their society. Female power is when a woman has
or lacks control of herself or others. Moreover, female power in the novel is seen through the three
perspectives of Scout, Mayella, and Miss Stephanie. Throughout the county of Maycomb, the theme
of female power is seen through isolation, fear, and education. Scout Finch, an innocent girl, lives in
Maycomb County, where she attends school and spends her summer playing games, antagonizing her

This is seen in the novel when Scout is forced to join Aunt Alexandra s missionary circle and Miss
Stephanie tries to teach Scout to act like a proper lady. Miss Stephanie asks, Don t you want to be a

you wont get very far until you start wearing dresses more often. (308) This shows education because
Miss Stephanie believes it is important to learn to act like a proper young lady. This shows female
power because Scout is forced to act like a stereotypical girl and wear dresses. Although, she
continues to act and dress like she pleases despite these lectures. Female power and education are
correlated with one another because some women are forced to learn society s rules about how to act
like a woman instead of having the ability to choose the kind of person they want to be. This is in
contrast to Miss Maudie, who does not care who Scout is as long she continues to be an intelligent
girl. Therefore, the theme of female power can be seen through

The Effects Of Technology On Children s Children
It damaged our kids! No, it helped them! These are the common arguments between adults about
using technology for their children. Both have good points, however, it depends which angle they are
looked at. There are different positive and negative views of technology regarding a child s social
skills, education, creativity, and health. Every morning, to keep a toddler from bothering the family or
babysitter, adults turn on the television on, directly to an educational channel, such as PBS Kids or
Sprout. When they watch more of these kinds of TV shows, it will eventually lead to the young child
talk back to the TV, building their communication among their families, or with others as well. As
some parents have found, kids who watch a lot of appropriate TV began to speak at an earlier age than
those who watch less TV. It is not only TV that brings these skills to a child. Educational and apps
which kids repeat after, also play a role in a child s speech. Older kids, on the other hand, do not rely
on TV and educational apps for social skills. Instead, they use social media to keep in touch with the
world. They build up the courage to express themselves by, for example, posting or commenting on
Facebook. Once they get comfortable being themselves online, it becomes easier to do so in real life.
(Caruso) Although parents often complain about their child not leaving the house to talk to people in
the real world, most of them are complaining for the wrong purposes. Some teens

Elements Of Literature In Girl In The Green Sweater
Elements of Literature in The Girl in the Green Sweater Life is a precious thing, and it is so precious
that some people will undergo severe anguish to hold on to it. During the 1930 s and 1940 s in
Germany, people of the Jewish religion were diabolically oppressed and slaughtered, just for their
beliefs. Some Jews went to extreme measures to evade capture by the German law enforcement,
hoping to hold on to life. Krystyna Chiger was only a small child when her family, along with a group
of other desperate Jews, descended into the malignant sewers to avoid the Germans. After living in the
abysmal sewers for fourteen months, her group emerged, and when she became an adult, she authored
a novel about her time in the sewer. When analyzing the literary elements utilized in her novel, The
Girl in the Green Sweater, one can determine how tone and mood, point of view, and conflict convey
the message of struggle and survival that was experienced during the Holocaust, and how they help
the reader to understand and relate. To begin, the elements of tone and mood work together to reveal
and support the message of survival and struggle. In the novel, Chiger uses descriptive details and her
thoughts and attitudes toward the situation that she was placed into set the tone. She describes and
explains the agony, hatred, and hopelessness she and others felt in the sewers, revealing her bitterness
for the sewers and the Nazis. Chiger also uses mood to present her messages by creating different
moods around different characters, making some optimistic and hopeful while making others
pessimistic and morose. This was a reflection of their personalities: my father was gregarious and
personable; Weiss was gruff and miserable (Chiger 107). This is relatable because some people may
have disparate attitudes toward a negative situation, and each person may have a different demeanor or
mood in response to it. Chiger conveys her themes of struggle and survival through tone and mood,
and makes it somewhat relatable. In addition, Chiger utilizes point of view to present her own
thoughts and experiences, further pushing the themes. The whole book is written in first person,
meaning the author is narrating and explaining everything.

Evaluating The Perceptions Selection Officials
More research is needed to examine the perceptions selection officials have in regards to various
aspects of assessment method, specifically administration mediums, to examine the generalizability of
the findings by Lievens et al. (2005), and investigate whether these relationships are affected by other
situational factors such as job level. Therefore, this study would aim to answer the call by Lievens et

I then boiled a kettle it make boiling water which i was going to put in the conical flask later on. After
that I started to make the concentration of the sodium thiosulfate by mixing it with the correct volume
of water in the measuring cylinder
The actual test:
All I had to do now was to add the concentration of sodium thiosulfate to the hydrochloric acid
At the exact same time as the above step happens I start the stopwatch.
Making sure that the conical flask is directly on top of the cross

Understanding Thermal or Solar Heat Gain Coefficients
In order to understand the word thermal within a building, then SHGC which is solar heat gain
coefficients had to be known to known the property of thermal insulation and conductivity in a whole
manner. Solar heat gain coefficient is widely use in the United State in designing building. SHGC may
refer to the transmittance of solar energy of windows or even walls, every object can be evaluate by
using solar heat gain coefficient method by knowing the properties of each material. If a material have
high solar heat gain coefficient, then the material is a good absorbent of solar heat. For material that is
black in colour, inevitably it absorb heat faster because of the colour doesn t reflect the wavelength
that comes directly from the source of light. So, low e components of a building that comes with low
solar heat gain coefficient will reflect and keep heat source that came from sun away from the house
and that will probably makes a house cooler. Solar heat gain coefficient usually dealt with windows
that possess a low e property. Low e may regard to the emissivity of one s material. Nowadays
window mostly is transparent, and that makes it vulnerable for sunlight to penetrate easily into a house
without any reflection. We have to be notice that if a window is place facing the unsuitable direction
such as west or east, it will have an adverse effect towards the thermal comfort of a house especially
terraced house in Malaysia that cant undergoes renovation due to the

Tet Offensive Research Paper
As 1967 drew to a close, it appeared that the U.S was gaining the upper hand in the Vietnam War. The
Tet Offensive of early 1968, however, began the steady decline of U.S fortunes in Vietnam, despite an
undeniable military victory. The Tet Offensive of early 1968 denoted the demise of American
confidence about the course of the Vietnam War. In the second half of 1967, General Westmoreland
made three treks home to the United States to brief President Lyndon Johnson on the advancement of
the war. He made a progression of open and private comments which painted an idealistic picture of
the circumstance in Vietnam. American troops were adjusting to the conditions, Westmoreland said;
the foe was debilitated and exhausted, and his theater of operations ... Show more content on

My Development As A Psychologist
Chapter 42
Dr Gordon Mangan
Dr Mangan was far more influential in my development as a psychologist than I realised when I was a
student. I must confess that I didn t warm to him as a teacher. When I peruse his publications it seems
amazing that I cant find a full biography or bibliography of Mangan anywhere on the net. I am happy
to fill that gap now. It is high time.
Dr Mangan has a rare scientific talent that enables him to originate and follow uncommon ideas to
their conclusion and then substantiate his remarkable ideas with clear theorising and hard
experimental data.
An overview of his publications might lead to the impression that he deliberately chose areas that
were neglected and controversial. He devoted half a decade of his early career to parapsychology,
publishing innovative research and clearheaded reviews. He devoted the later part of his career to
research in smoking funded by the tobacco industry.
He had a lasting interest in Russian psychology particularly Pavlov and the neo Pavlovians. A
considerable amount of his work is devoted to drawing parallels between Eastern and Western
conceptualisations of personality, learning and arousal which culminated in an influential book The
Biology of Human Conduct: East West Models of Temperament and Personality .
As well as these three areas he published on a broad range of topics including intelligence, aging,
learning, conflict, behaviour therapy, personality, attention, music and arousal.

Missions Should Be A Fundamental Priority
Contextualization in missions should be a fundamental priority in missions but is often times viewed
as a sometimes controversial, relative methodology instead. However, contextualization is the
framework by which the church s role as the great missionary agent and participant in the Missio Dei
of God by charge of what has been dubbed, The Great Commission and found in Matthew 28:18 20
Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: God authorized and commanded me to
commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them

And they are often unaware of their culture and how it colors what they see. Now that culture has a
definition and there is a set understanding that how we see the world is through a cultural context, it is
only fair to say that how we see the gospel is through a cultural context. This truth becomes a problem
for many because of cultural differences.
Cultural differences does not negate church unity. In fact cultural diversity in the unity of Christian
faith reflects the beauty, the creativity, and the glory of God. Acts 17:26 tells us And He has made
from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre
appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope
that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us . This Scripture
itself informs us that God is all about diversity and bringing diversity to Him. Revelation 7:9 says
After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations,
tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white
robes, with palm branches in their hands . It can and should be said that God isn t bothered or limited
by cultural diversity. If Christianity is uniform in doctrine, it will be uniform in practice, but that
doesn t mean it has to be uniform in expression because expression

Argumentative Essay On Homeland Security
America has been on edge about protecting both its country and the citizens in it ever since 9/11
occurred. We have developed a more strict security line with the placement of Homeland security. We
also tested our limits to make sure that terrorism in this country would no longer become a threat to
U.S citizens; little did we know that our efforts to prevent the inevitable would only last a short time.
Now that the U.S has eliminated its central threat Osama Bin Laden leader of the Al Qaeda terrorist
group in the Middle East, another issue has created nothing but chaos and has further split the foreign
relations between the U.S and the Middle East. Furthermore, a new extremist group called ISIS which

Pros And Cons Of Having A Professional Code Of Ethics
Pros and Cons of Having a Professional Code of Ethics
Introduction
A professional code of ethics acts as a guide concerning ethical conduct in a given profession.
However, over time, it has been termed as an impediment to intellectual and moral developments. This
way or another, there are advantages as well as disadvantages that emanate from applying the
professional code of ethics depending on the context of practices. For this reason, this paper discusses
both sides: positive and negative effects of adopting professional standards. For the purpose of this
assignment, it is important to mention that a professional code of ethics comprises of pros and cons
that need serious intervention. Professionally, organizations tend to implement ethical practices that
guide workers through legal frameworks, which violate the very definition of ethics. In line with this
argument, it is clear that specific principles that cultivate human behavior have their weaknesses
leading to the debate on whether or not codes of ethics are appropriate for organizational development.
In extension, an attempt to codify standards through substantial agreement contradicts the principles
of ethics, which define individuals as self directed and moral agents. In fact, attaching the code of
ethics to the workplace reflects intellectual confusion about the roles of the predetermined standards.
However, its weaknesses do not imply that the professional code of ethics is irrelevant to
organizations, so it

How Does Wilfred Owen Describe The Horror Of War
UNNECESSARY AND RIDICULOUS The poem Dulce et Decorum est wrote by Wilfred Owen is a
surprising poem which explains the experiences of soldiers in the trenches during World War I. He
uses his poetry as a vehicle to express his ideas on the horror of war. On this essay I will go through of
the techniques used by him to illustrate the notion of it being sweet and fitting to die for your country
is not true. The reader is introduced to the horror of war in the first lines of the poem as Owen portrays
the bad physical condition of the men, bent double, like old beggars under sacks . This simile shows
how dirty and unhealthy the soldiers appear. The comparison to old beggars is interesting because it is
how the men have been aged early by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Theme Of Existentialism In 7 Stories

conception or focus to validate their existence. Rachael, The Man, Charlotte and Rodney fall into this
theme of existentialism by the way their characters are portrayed. Rachael an older woman that The
Man meets on the seventh storey she is someone who believes she is god by doing deed s for them.

Augusto Pinochet And Fidel Castro
Selbin identifies the most important part of a social revolution is the transformation of the society that
is broken up into two parts consolidation and institutionalization of a country (Selbin 13). Augusto
Pinochet and Fidel Castro both tried to succeed in these aspects, but both had success in areas but also
failures in others. Their rise to power, reign and their political ideology separated them on a
fundamental level, but they did have some similarities. The biggest difference between the two
dictatorships was their visions for their country. Pinochet was a neoliberalist were as Castro was a

Though their political ideology differed both dictators saw their previous structures had failed them.
Another difference between the two was the support or lack of support from the United States.
Pinochet s need to identify himself as an anti communist was quite different than that of Fidel Castro
and the deciding factor on how the United States interfered with who at the beginning did not
associate with that communist ideology until he was near power and no longer saw any ally in the
United States, but the communist Soviet Union. The United States used a very military hand in trying
to stop the Cuban Revolution. In one instance, in 1961, the United States trained Cuban exiles to try to
overthrow the Castro regime, this is known as the Bay of Pigs. The Bay of Pigs did turn out to be a
failed attempt to over throw Castro. The United States did not stop there. They used any means
possible to try and hurt the countries ability
With Pinochet s rejection of communist thinking he was able to obtain the backing of the United
States which was a key difference in his ability to come to power in his country. This in comparison
with Castro and the hard hand that the United States used to try to make crush Castro s reign in Cuba.

Urban Population And Employment Distribution And Change
This chapter examines previous research on intra urban population and employment distribution and
change. The classical monocentric theory of urban development (Alonso 1964; Milles 1972; Muth
1969) involves early studies of intraurban population distribution, with strict assumptions about the
concentration of jobs at the city center. Researchers have attempted to extend this theoretical model to
the more realistic case of a polycentric urban structure (Anas and Kim, 1996; Kloosterman and
Musterd 2001). The most widespread criticism is that this model is not operational, because it is
difficult to apply empirically. In the 1970s and 1980s, spatial interaction models have attracted the
attention of many scholars. The Lowry model involves static interactions between employment and
population and generates an instantaneous city. Its extensions include the TOMM (considers the time
element) and BASS (focuses on housing markets) models. Later, the ITLUP model has been proposed
to integrate a Lowry type sub model with a transportation network assignment sub model. Recent
work has concentrated on combining spatial interaction factors with an econometric model, starting
with Steinnes and Fisher s analysis of the relationship7 between population and jobs at the
metropolitan level. Carlino and Mills then extended this model to the county level, and introduced a
lagged parameter that made the model dynamic. Boarnet s and Deitz s models further extended this
approach to the census tract

  • 2. Analysis of Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Essay Mahalia Gauld January 18, 2011 MGMT 2850 Case Study #1 Exxon Valdez Situation in Brief: On March 24, 1989, an Exxon supertanker spilled 11 million gallons of oil while traveling through the pristine waters of Alaska s Prince William Sound. The consequences of this spill were detrimental and continue to affect life today. The oil spill killed thousands of wildlife, extensively damaged a portion of the beautiful Alaskan environment, and eventually affected the economy to global proportions. Unfortunately, this tragedy could have been prevented. Lack of adequate safety efforts, enforcement, and regulations all played a major role in this truly catastrophic event. However, Prince William Sound s remote location made government and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Radar and monitoring were heavily used to enforce seriously among the tanking community. Goals were aimed toward proper spill prevention and procedures with the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures regulation in effect. This required every company to have a spill prevention plan, with the proper equipment and employee training to handle such an occurrence. PRESENT While safety regulations are still in effect, they are not enforced with rigor. The Coast Guard, Exxon, the government, and employees are responsible for being able to perform their duties. This has not occurred with the crew not trained in their position properly, the Coast Guard not enforcing traffic laws, and the rejection of radar systems by the company of Exxon. These are examples of everyone not looking out for the safety of themselves and others. FUTURE From this event, it is clear the future will require strict safety regulations with strong enforcement from all agencies involved. It needs to be focused on preparation and prevention of all oil spills. For example, the Coast Guard should do accurate and timely check to ensure the equipment and staff is properly equipped for their journey. Also, there needs to be a more thorough conversation and procedure between the ship and government agency when reporting any type of emergency situation. Alternatives: 1. NO CHANGE Careless safety regulations would continue to run the oil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay On Low Voter Turnout It is often argued that the voter turnout is too low, especially when compared with turnout in other democratic countries. There are several different factors that contribute to voter turnout in the US. It can be expressed as a rate of the quantity of eligible voters, registered voters and the populace that is politically mature enough to vote. Low voter turnout involves lack of participation and political disengagement due to the belief that voting for a candidate will hardly change the public policies. To measure the number of qualified voters, the voting qualified populace turnout is used. Registered voter turnout is used to calculate the percentage of registered voter. When measured based on age and population, it is the voting age population ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Texas has been reported to have the lowest number of voters in the presidential election in the US. In 2010, a survey conducted by the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life at the UT at Austin revealed that Texas ranked last in the nation in voter turnout. It is recorded to be ranked 42nd in voter registration and 49th in the number of people who contacted public officials (amarillo). One of the main reason for low voter turnout in Texas is legal constraints. Compared to other states, Texas is one of the restrictive states in its voting laws regarding things such as the poll tax, women suffrage, the white primary and restriction on military vote. Moreover, more than 4 million people in Texas live in poverty. Education and income are important determinants of electoral participation. Therefore, low turnout rate is inevitable when poverty rate in Texas is high. Aside from that, Texas s political culture is one of the main reason that contributes to low voter turnout.Texas is a mix of the traditionalistic and individualistic. Their political values and belief discourage participation (Maxwell). Many Texan believe that their vote plays a little role in politics. Texas keeps on passing laws that discourage participation and cooperation. Overall, the absence of political will serves to exhaust the voting energy in minorities. They vanished with out a trace recently, leaving behind a modest home and children that are in adulthood. Hennessey draws the initial conclusion that there is some foul play here. He is later called out to a crime scene on a local farm where a shallow grave is found, and in the grave are two bodies. None other then his missing couple. This is the beginning of things for Detective Inspector Hennessey and the rest of the police squad. One thing that Hennessey knows for sure is that they were not killed because of a vast sum of money they had lost a quite sizable chunk of change recently. They were both engaged in affairs that neither one knew about. They go to schools or universities where lessons are held in Russian or in Kazakh, they attend additional classes to prepare for the exams also in Russian or may be in Kazakh sometimes, they are on the job working mainly in Russian, they go to their English classes, may be they start speaking English a little bit, but then they go home and revert back to their native tongue again. May be they are making slow improvements in speaking English, but still it is not enough to be fluent in English. The biggest problem for Kazakhstan students is that they almost never speak English in their everyday lives. They can do it only attending English classes and only if their teacher creates such opportunity, so that students can practice oral speech. Passive listening is okay, but interacting is even better. It is of vital importance for the teachers to have students speak in the target language as much as they can, stick to English. That is why teachers of the English in Kazakhstan need practical, easy to implement, effective methods to increase the use of the English in the classroom. And it is indeed a good question. Somewhere in the early 70 s, when the world was recovering from war and recession, there was some time to look around and be aware of the overall situation. Clinical psychologists noticed that people were far less attentive to their surroundings and almost oblivious to the things happening in their life with every passing second! This may not seem like a problem when we talk on a second to second basis, but when we take into account an entire day or week or even months, it becomes a form of unconscious neglect. We start neglecting small things and soon we start neglecting important things. Mindfulness is a concept, appropriated from ancient Buddhist roots, and clinically innovated by Jon Kabat Zinn. The idea of mindfulness involves being aware moment to moment, of one s subjective conscious experience from a first person perspective. • 13. Solving The Costs And Benefits For Each Of Our Options Eric Chien GESM 120 _35386 Paper #1/ Topic #1 To be rational is to understand and calculate the costs and benefits for each of our options and make the decision that maximizes the value and utility of of self interest. However, humans often behave irrationally due to our emotions, morality and desire for immediate pleasure. Given the above depiction, Dan Ariely argues that we will be acting irrational if we don t commit acts of thievery since the expected benefits of committing the act obviously outweighs the cost given that nobody would find out . His definition of rationality is more or less similar to what most economists believe in, which is making decisions strictly based on the highest grossing financial benefits. Therefore, under his definition of rationality and irrationality, we would be acting irrational by succumbing to our morality and conscience, and not commit the act that would bring us the most economic benefits. Under his assumption, there is no cost or risk of committing acts of thievery, then to be rational under his definition would be to steal whatever there is out there as it s practically the same thing as drinking water from a public water fountain. • 15. Villa Rica Christian Church On the fifth of February, I went to my church, Villa Rica Christian Church. In my church, there is a nursery for kids ranging from birth to two. The first toy was a rectangular box that has shaped holes on the lid. On the lid, there are four shapes triangle, square, star, and circle. The second toy, is a panel with four different popups of Sesame Street characters. To trigger the popup, a kid has to either turn, press, or push a button. The third toy is a child like abacus with five rows of beads that vary by colors red, yellow, blue, green, and orange. In the nursery, I examined toys aimed at the sensorimotor stage of cognitive development. This stage includes actions based on reflexes and the transition to actions based on intentions. Actions that are satisfying are repeated by the child through a process called primary circular reactions. Soon after this first stage, the child moves on to the secondary circular reactions or actions that have an effect on the environment. After experiencing both of these kind of reactions, the child then advances into more intentional actions. The child begins to have goal directed behavior and curiosity which leads to experimenting. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee tries to emphasize the ways women in the novel control and contribute to their society. Female power is when a woman has or lacks control of herself or others. Moreover, female power in the novel is seen through the three perspectives of Scout, Mayella, and Miss Stephanie. Throughout the county of Maycomb, the theme of female power is seen through isolation, fear, and education. This shows female power because Scout is forced to act like a stereotypical girl and wear dresses. Although, she continues to act and dress like she pleases despite these lectures. • 17. The Effects Of Technology On Children s Children It damaged our kids! No, it helped them! These are the common arguments between adults about using technology for their children. Both have good points, however, it depends which angle they are looked at. There are different positive and negative views of technology regarding a child s social skills, education, creativity, and health. Every morning, to keep a toddler from bothering the family or babysitter, adults turn on the television on, directly to an educational channel, such as PBS Kids or Sprout. When they watch more of these kinds of TV shows, it will eventually lead to the young child talk back to the TV, building their communication among their families, or with others as well. As some parents have found, kids who watch a lot of appropriate TV began to speak at an earlier age than those who watch less TV. It is not only TV that brings these skills to a child. Educational and apps which kids repeat after, also play a role in a child s speech. Older kids, on the other hand, do not rely on TV and educational apps for social skills. Instead, they use social media to keep in touch with the world. They build up the courage to express themselves by, for example, posting or commenting on Facebook. Once they get comfortable being themselves online, it becomes easier to do so in real life. (Caruso) Although parents often complain about their child not leaving the house to talk to people in the real world, most of them are complaining for the wrong purposes. Some teens ... • 18. Elements Of Literature In Girl In The Green Sweater Elements of Literature in The Girl in the Green Sweater Life is a precious thing, and it is so precious that some people will undergo severe anguish to hold on to it. During the 1930 s and 1940 s in Germany, people of the Jewish religion were diabolically oppressed and slaughtered, just for their beliefs. Some Jews went to extreme measures to evade capture by the German law enforcement, hoping to hold on to life. Krystyna Chiger was only a small child when her family, along with a group of other desperate Jews, descended into the malignant sewers to avoid the Germans. After living in the abysmal sewers for fourteen months, her group emerged, and when she became an adult, she authored a novel about her time in the sewer. When analyzing the literary elements utilized in her novel, The Girl in the Green Sweater, one can determine how tone and mood, point of view, and conflict convey the message of struggle and survival that was experienced during the Holocaust, and how they help the reader to understand and relate. To begin, the elements of tone and mood work together to reveal and support the message of survival and struggle. In the novel, Chiger uses descriptive details and her thoughts and attitudes toward the situation that she was placed into set the tone. She describes and explains the agony, hatred, and hopelessness she and others felt in the sewers, revealing her bitterness for the sewers and the Nazis. Chiger also uses mood to present her messages by creating different moods around different characters, making some optimistic and hopeful while making others pessimistic and morose. This was a reflection of their personalities: my father was gregarious and personable; Weiss was gruff and miserable (Chiger 107). This is relatable because some people may have disparate attitudes toward a negative situation, and each person may have a different demeanor or mood in response to it. Chiger conveys her themes of struggle and survival through tone and mood, and makes it somewhat relatable. In addition, Chiger utilizes point of view to present her own thoughts and experiences, further pushing the themes. The whole book is written in first person, meaning the author is narrating and explaining everything. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Understanding Thermal or Solar Heat Gain Coefficients In order to understand the word thermal within a building, then SHGC which is solar heat gain coefficients had to be known to known the property of thermal insulation and conductivity in a whole manner. Solar heat gain coefficient is widely use in the United State in designing building. SHGC may refer to the transmittance of solar energy of windows or even walls, every object can be evaluate by using solar heat gain coefficient method by knowing the properties of each material. If a material have high solar heat gain coefficient, then the material is a good absorbent of solar heat. For material that is black in colour, inevitably it absorb heat faster because of the colour doesn t reflect the wavelength that comes directly from the source of light. So, low e components of a building that comes with low solar heat gain coefficient will reflect and keep heat source that came from sun away from the house and that will probably makes a house cooler. Solar heat gain coefficient usually dealt with windows that possess a low e property. Low e may regard to the emissivity of one s material. Nowadays window mostly is transparent, and that makes it vulnerable for sunlight to penetrate easily into a house without any reflection. Researchers have attempted to extend this theoretical model to the more realistic case of a polycentric urban structure (Anas and Kim, 1996; Kloosterman and Musterd 2001). The most widespread criticism is that this model is not operational, because it is difficult to apply empirically. In the 1970s and 1980s, spatial interaction models have attracted the attention of many scholars. The Lowry model involves static interactions between employment and population and generates an instantaneous city. Its extensions include the TOMM (considers the time element) and BASS (focuses on housing markets) models. Later, the ITLUP model has been proposed to integrate a Lowry type sub model with a transportation network assignment sub model. Recent work has concentrated on combining spatial interaction factors with an econometric model, starting with Steinnes and Fisher s analysis of the relationship7 between population and jobs at the metropolitan level. Carlino and Mills then extended this model to the county level, and introduced a lagged parameter that made the model dynamic. Boarnet s and Deitz s models further extended this approach to the census tract ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
