What is Assessment? Assessment is the systematic gathering and analyzing of information to  inform  and  improve  student learning or programs of student learning in light of  goal-oriented expectations. Walvoord, B. & Johnson, V. (1998)  Effective Grading: A Tool for Learning and  Assessment , Anderson Jossey-Bass.
Assessment is…  “ … an ongoing process aimed at understanding and improving student learning”  (AAHE, Angelo, 1995) Set appropriate criteria & standards for learning Gather, analyze, and interpret evidence to determine how well performance matches expectations & standards Use resulting info to document, explain, and improve performance Angelo, 1995

What is Authentic Assessment?  “ Assessment that evaluates the student’s ability to use their knowledge and to perform tasks that are approximate those found in the work place or other venues outside of the classroom setting.” Janet Fulks
Authentic Assessment A form of assessment in which students are asked to perform real-world tasks that demonstrate meaningful application of essential knowledge and skills.   Student performance on a task is typically scored on a rubric to determine how successfully the student has met specific standards. (Mueller, 2008)
