OF
Curriculum
■ Latin “Currere” = “A race Course”
■ If the teacher is the guide, then curriculum is the
path
■ The formal and informal content and process by
which the learners gain knowledge and
understanding, develop skills and alter attitudes,
appreciations and values under the auspices of a

■ The Process of Curriculum planning -
– Diagnosis of needs – Of Learner, society & stake holders
– Formulation of objectives – Need based
– Selection of content – By assessing its Self-sufficiency, Significance,
Validity, Interest, Utility, Learnability & Feasibility.
– Organization of content – By Continuity (vertical organization),
sequence(in succession) and integration (horizontal relationship)
– Selection of learning experiences – Criteria same as selection of
content
– Organization of learning experiences – Criteria same as
organization of content
– Determination of the ‘what’and ‘how’of evaluation
Plan, organize and install the
facilities..
■ The infrastructure – As per laid down norms of
apex body
■ Staffing – All categories with specific
qualification
■ Transportation – For students and staff
■ Educational programme - Theory & practice
■ Coordination and liaison as needed
■ Records and reports – Administrative, academic
and others
Implementation of
curriculum
■ Curriculum - Prescribed by the regulatory body
■ Modified by the regional Universities (only
additions made)
■ Studied in depth at the College level
■ Curriculum - Broken into smaller units
■ At departmental level - Units are broken into
lessons (= Unit plans)
■ Lesson plans - made by teachers
■ Curriculum revision done periodically
Factors that influence curriculum implementation
■ The teacher –
– Understand the curriculum
– Be involved in planning &
devt
– Implement and modify as
needed
■ The learners –
– Role in selection of learning
experiences
■ Resource materials & facilities
– Text books, teaching aids &
stationery

strategies
Master rotation plan (MRP)
■ Overall plan of rotation of all students in a
particular educational institution, showing the
placement of the students belonging to total
programme
■ Includes both theory & practice denoting the
study block, partial block, placement of students
in clinical blocks, team nursing, examination,
vacation, co-curricular activities etc.
Master Rotation Plan – III Yr BSc (N)
Master Rotation Plan – IV Yr BSc (N)
Purpose of Master Rotation Plan…
■ Advance plan available - before implementation
of curricular activities during an academic year
for the entire programme.
■ Awareness by all concerned – about placement of
students in clinical fields.
■ Effective coordination possible – Correlation of
theory & practice & maintain integrity.
■ Preparation in advance – By teachers and students
for working in the specified areas.
….Purpose of Master Rotation
Plan
■ Modifications can be made as required – Acc
to situations and collaborations between the
faculty & service staff
■ Allows for smooth running of organizational
activities & meeting the objectives of
educational programme.
■ Better Assessment of the curricular
programme.
Principles of making an MRP
■ Plan in accordance with the guidelines in curriculum
plan/syllabus for the entire course/ program
■ Plan in advance for all students in all years of program.
■ Follow maxims of teaching while planning the learning
experiences
■ Select areas that can provide expected learning experiences
■ Acquaint the clinical supervisor with clinical objectives &
rotation plan.
■ Provide each clinical experience of same duration to all the
students.
■ Rotate each student through every learning experience or block.
Clinical rotation plan
■ A "regular, successive & recurrent posting of groups of
nursing students of different batches in specific nursing
fields i.e. OPD's, specialty wards, OT, delivery room,
clinics, community health fields, etc
Factors to be considered for
Rotation plan
■ State the objectives clearly – Explain to students
■ State the number of students in each batch
■ Number & size of dept./ teaching units/ wards where students will
be posted for clinical experience.
■ The duration of clinical experience in each area as per INC &
university/Board norms.
■ Clinical assignments to be completed in each rotation
■ The number of teaching faculty available for clinical supervision.
■ Adhere to rotation plan.
Basic principles for making
Clinical rotation plan..
■ Prepare in advance.
■ Plan acc to the MRP and the total curriculum plan.
■ Theory should closely precede the clinical experience.
■ Teacher : student ratio - 1:10 as prescribed by INC.
■ Learning experience should be from simple to complex.
■ Clinical supervisor - be familiar with the rotation plan.
■ Each student should get all the experience on rotation.
■ All students should enter & leave the clinical area at the same
time & complete assignments in time.
Role of faculty in Clinical experience
■ Prepare objectives for clinical experience.
■ Plan experience in advance acc to objectives, to provide
specific planned learning experiences.
■ Obtain permission from clinical authority
■ Explain objectives , assignments and evaluation to each
student
■ Orient the student to the clinical area, ward staff, etc. where
they are posted.
■ Place & guide the student to get required clinical
experience.
Role of faculty in Clinical experience
■ Be updated on the latest in patient care system
■ Participate in teaching, supervision, & evaluation of
students in the ward.
■ Have ‘Planned’ and ‘incidental’ teaching. Repeat for each
group
■ Arrange ward teaching, ward discussions & case
presentation.
■ Teach to apply learned theory into practice.
■ Help the students for effective charting of records &
reports.
Questions….
