Narrative Frames and Ambiguity in Henry James The Turn...
Narrative frames and Ambiguity in The Turn of The Screw Since it was written, Henry James The
Turn of The Screw has been acclaimed by numerous critics to be one of the most immaculate,
engrossing and terrifying ghost stories ever produced. Harriet Waters Preston described it as, a sheer
mortal horror, like the evil dream of a man under the spell of a deadly drug 1, and Gertrude Atherton
said, [it] is the most horrifying ghost story ever written! 2 I will argue that it is the narrative frames
enclosing The Turn of The Screw that are largely responsible for the reception the book has received.
They serve two main purposes; one, to build up an element of suspense and tension before the
governess s account actually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These layers serve to establish tension and suspense before the story actually begins. There are many
dramatic devices employed in these outer frames to heighten this sensation. At the outermost layer of
all, the title of the text itself, The Turn of the Screw , imparts an ominous atmosphere. Whether or not
the screw refers to a sinister thumb screw for torture purposes, or merely to a simple fastening device,
the implication is that a ghost story involving children is a degree more oppressive than one that
concerns only adults.3 In the second paragraph of the text, Douglas says, If the child gives the effect
another turn of the screw, what do you say to two children ? 4 The very setting of the fireside at which
Griffin s guests swap stories establishes an atmosphere with which many of us are familiar. We can all
relate to sitting around a fire exchanging ghost stories. By employing this particular narrative frame
James encourages the reader to abandon their scepticism and give themselves over to a belief in the
ghosts. The reader shares in the eagerness of the guests to be frightened; to be delighted by horror.
Upon seeing Douglas distress at the thought of the tale he must tell, and its dreadful dreadfulness , one
of the female guests actually cries, Oh how delicious! 5 Douglas own elusiveness and

Essay on History of Disparity in Development
History of Disparity in Development Human is one of few creatures of mother earth that can think and
decide what is right or wrong. Due to that special characteristic, people are always curious about
something and try to find the reason about it. In 1974, Jared Diamond was staying in Papua New
Guinea, and one day, a local named Yali asked Diamond a deceptively simple question Why is it that
you white people developed so much cargo, but we black people had little cargo of our own? (NGO,
2005) Jared thought it was very interesting question and made a research for more than 20 years. As a
result, Jared was able to find his own conclusion and wrote a book call Guns, Germs, and Steel based
on knowledge he gathered from different places of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People started using plows using animals and animal s dung worked as a great fertilizer. Meanwhile
animals in Papua were not that useful. All they did was just providing meat. Due to that, people in
Papua needed to spend more time on gathering food while people in Fertile Crescent started to
develop day by day. People in Fertile Crescent now had more people and they were able to feed
technicians who work with irons. This made huge difference in technological development.
There are some other theories of human development. The most popular theory is about water
(Marrone, 2014/02/04). The key role water plays in human development is well accepted (Donoso,
2009) throughout the world. Unlike Diamond s theory, people who support the theory that water is a
main factor say domestication was possible because of existence of water and support with 3 different
examples. First example is in 11500 years ago, people didn t have technology to pump the water, so
they had to use their hand in order to provide water to plants and animals. Due to that, people naturally
moved to the region that is close to the water (Briggs, 2009 and 2014/02/03). Second example is, in
ancient world, people s average life expectancy was 20 years (Galor/ Moav, 2007), it is caused by
many reasons, but the main reason was disease. By washing their body everyday with water made
them cleaner and healthier than before. Longer lifespan means more

ENGL100 18
November 18, 2014 FREMONT HIGH SCHOOL BY JONATHAN KOZOL Schools lacking social
utilities that are needed to promote the academic status of its students is an issue. Whether these
benefits should be kept opened or closed is widely debated in most societies. The condition of such
schools is an important issue because it determines the future of its students academically. Some
issues facing schools include social, public and economic issues; this essay will consider arguments
concerning the social, public and economical causes of this problem through the use of Jonathan
Kozol s FREMONT HIGH SCHOOL , which was written to expose the poor conditions in Fremont
high school and seek in the improvement of the school system. In his essay, Kozol identified Fremont
high school as a public school that has over a thousand students enrolled but does not have a
convenient environment suitable for learning. Some classes are taught in portables or storage rooms
and they do not even have windows and this is where the students are being taught. Students are given
inadequate time to eat and rest for breaks before continuing with their classes and some students do
not bother to eat. Rodents run freely in Fremont high. Hamburger buns have rat bite marks and rat
droppings have been found around the school. At Fremont only one or two bathrooms are operational
and there are fifteen bathrooms short that are required by the

The Voodoo Of Voodoo Dolls
It is easy to look back at history and see a clear pattern and relation between different cultures, objects,
rituals, etc. When you take a deeper look into origins, you ll often be surprised by what you find.
Minkondi (plural for nkondi), are sculptures made and used in the 19th century by African cultures.
They served a very specific purpose and had a very sacred importance. The Nkisi Nkondi functioned
as a hunter healer of conflicts. The people would take their worries, requests and fears to the figure to
call on the spirits. Voodoo dolls on the other hand, are often misunderstood and misrepresented. The
Voodoo doll is a ritualized way of calling on spirits to target a specific person. The doll can be used a
number of things including luck, power, love and most commonly recognized, for evil and harm. The
Nkisi Nkondi sculptures and Voodoo dolls, even though they are from different cultures and time
periods, have a number of similarities and one may have influenced the creation of the other. Nkisi
refers to the spiritual being of the figure, and nkondi comes from the word konda, which means to
hunt, refers to the figure itself. Minkondi, representative of hunters, can catch those who undermine
the frame of society. The Nkisi Nkondi is typically shaped in a human form. There are few Nkisi
Nkondi that are shaped like dogs, which were seen as sacred animals. The Nkisi Nkondi weren t literal
representations of the spirits that they called on. The way the figures were

Efficacy Of Antidepressant Medication Therapy
Cuijpers (2017) identifies that over the last 40 years there have been approximately 500 randomized
trials looking at the efficacy of treating depression with psychological methods. The studies chosen
provide insight into the lack of efficacy of antidepressant medication therapy, as well as the
effectiveness of psychological therapies. The evidence provided in the studies appears to support one
another. Compare and Contrast Fournier et al. (2010) and Barbui et al. (2011) both concluded that
there is a deficiency of support for the use of antidepressant medications in adults with minor
depression. Fournier et al. (2010) found that antidepressant medication was not helpful in patients

Collective Wisdom The collective wisdom across studies supports the use of cognitive behavioral
therapy for minor depression. However, there are limitations to prescribing cognitive behavioral
therapy frequently for the first line treatment of depression. The primary limitation identified is the
inadequate number of therapists to administer cognitive behavioral therapy (Linde et al., 2015).
Additional research is attempting to identify successful methods of administering cognitive behavioral
therapy in a remote fashion (Linde et al., 2015). Overall, there is an agreement that patients with
minor depressive symptoms should be prescribed a form of psychotherapy. Cognitive behavioral
therapy is shown to be favorable over the other types of psychotherapies for depression treatment.
However, some bias may exist due to cognitive behavioral therapy being the most studied form of
psychotherapy. The evidence shows that cognitive behavioral therapy should be prescribed as a first
line treatment. However, the large number of antidepressants prescribed by primary providers
demonstrates a disconnect between evidence and practice. After reviewing the most up to date
literature and APA guidelines (2013) the consensus is that psychotherapy should be prescribed for
outpatients with minor depressive symptoms. Sufficient evidence suggests that cognitive behavioral
therapy should be prescribed for all patients with minor depressive symptoms. Application

Arguments Against The Tariff By Daniel Webster
On January 26, 1830, the government was put to the test by the people of South Carolina. The
representatives of South Carolina fought to not have the Tariff of 1828 because it would have hurt the
farmers of South Carolina financially. The Tariff of 1828 would have raised the price on their cost of
planting for the advantage of the north. Daniel Webster led the argument, in which he wholeheartedly
believed that the states right to reject the Tariff. Webster made some effective arguments. One that
stood out the most is the claim that the citizens are in charge of the government. The Government and
constitution would not have even existed if it were not for the people to establish and raise it, therefore
the states have the right to reject anything

Essay on Parental Detachment in I Stand Here Ironing
Every parent knows how difficult it is to make decisions in the best interest of their children. There is
always some doubt in the back of the mind, what if this happens or that happens. Tillie Olsen shows in
her story I Stand Here Ironing the conflict and the results of one mother s decisions. She illustrates the
back, forth motion of the iron as the back and forth doubts in the mother s mind. The detachment
between mother and daughter in I Stand Here Ironing is understandable. The mother struggles daily
with the decisions she made while her oldest child Emily was a young baby and toddler. Obstacles in
Emily s life have made it hard for her mother to forget these decisions, and life with Emily only
reinforces these decisions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Emily is isolated from her mother s touch; she does not get the reassurance she needs that her mother
would return for her. Nurseries in this time were very stale and cold; her mother describes it as
...lacerations of group life. (Olsen) The mental pain is like physical pain that she could feel throughout
her little body. The separation of feelings between mother and daughter are so severe that Emily feels
as though her heart is torn in two. As Olsen has done throughout her story, the visual imagery clarifies
the story. Olsen writes about the way boys and girls appear when they live at a convalescent home, the
girls still wear those gigantic red bows and the ravaged looks... (Olsen) The children have a look of
longing; they are stripped of their emotions. They desire for nothing more than to be with their
families again; they want to feel loved and cared for. Instead, they are in a home that does not allow
emotions or love. Emily was again in that familiar place of being unwanted. Olsen describes how the
parents and children are kept at a distance so as not to be contaminated by parental germs or physical
affection. (Olsen) Parents, including Emily s mother, are kept at a distance so that they could not fill
their children with false hopes and dreams of returning home. However, the children are kept away so
that they would not tell their parents about the wretched home that they live in. After eight

Theme Of Masculinity In Macbeth
In the play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare, several characters become very selfish and their
behaviors end up destroying their loyalty to their own country, friends, and family. The unity needed
between a king and his colleagues is very important to ones country for not only the present but also
far in the future. Typically if the king has a son for a child than he shall be king after the father dies,
but there are several characters that believe that they should be king or that their families should be
higher up in society. The country of Scotland needs a new king who is well rounded in the traits of
love, faith, courage and strength. A noble leader is presented but does he have the willpower to

A true man has the ideals of strength, courage, and love while in the play Shakespeare makes it very
clear that the main focuses of a man are strength, power, the force of will, and physical courage.
Intelligence and morals are not very much touched upon or associated with a true man in Macbeth. All
the character at one point or another question each others manhood or masculinity. However it seems
that Lady Macbeth is the most masculine of them all. She uses her husband several times; aware that
he will perform the actions that she wishes upon. The suspicion that manhood is bias to violence is a
strong recurring theme. Lady Macbeth even states that she wishes to be a man in order to perform her
husbands requests sent upon her. Come, you spirits / That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, /
And fill me from the crown to the toe top full / Of direst cruelty. (I,v, 30 33) She can not believe that
her husband is being so scared to perform such a simple act in her eyes. She has came up with the plan
on how to perform this killing of Duncan but all she needs is her husband Macbeth to man up and

Essay On Khaled Hosseini s The Kite Runner
A moment in someone s life can define who they are for the rest of it; sometimes it is a bad moment
that leads them to seek redemption for the rest of their life. Khaled Hosseini s The Kite Runner is a
dramatic novel that describes the life of a man named Amir, who lets his half brother, Hassan, get
raped and does nothing. This moment defines Amir s life; eventually, after his guilt builds up, Amir
gets Hassan and his father Ali to leave his house, and then Amir moves to America. In America, he
lives a normal life and gets married, until one day when his father s friend Rahim Khan asks him to

Amir begins to pray and says: I will fast during Ramadan and when Ramadan has passed I will go on
fasting, I will commit to memory every last word of His holy book, and I will set on a pilgrimage to
that sweltering city in the desert and bow before Ka bah too. I will do all of this and I will think of
Him and every day from this day on if He only grants me this one wish: My hands are stained with
Hassan s blood; I pray God doesn t let them get stained with the blood of his boy too. (346) Amir s
prayer is very interesting because it is for him, and not for Sohrab. This is an extremely selfish thing to
do because time and time again Amir puts himself before everyone else. His selfishness has come to
the point that he would say, I pray God doesn t let [his hands] get stained with the blood of [Sohrab]
too, this comment is showing how Amir s initial reaction is to worry about his conscience. When Amir
is making promises to God, Hosseini uses hyperbole, which is the over exaggeration of words or
phrases. Hosseini uses hyperbole to make the point that Amir is in a desperate state, and that in his
desperation he is making false promises to God. For example, Amir says, I will commit to memory
every last word of His holy book, even though his promises were said in the hope of Sohrab being ok;
they were said so that Amir wouldn t have to feel guilt. Amir s selfishness and false promises foil the
intent of his prayers; this keeps him from

Protestant Reformation Dbq
Protestant Reformation
The Protestant Reformation refers to a movement that occurred 1517 when Martin Luther, a priest
who taught at the University of Wittenberg, rebelled against the Roman Catholic Church. Luther s
action eventually created a movement called the Protestant Reformation, where he exposed the corrupt
priests and criticized the indulgences sold by the Church. He urged people to instead read the Bible,
rather than following the orders of the Pope. After Luther was condemned by the Catholic priests and
popes, he was expelled from the Church and sentenced to death. Fortunately, he was protected by a

Race Based Slavery
Throughout the 18TH century, the South became very reliant on slaves for their main source of labor.
Many considered the act as a misfortune dictated by God and that Africans and Indians were naturally
lazy, stupid, and treacherous. As the spread of slavery began to grow, the laws regulating race based
slavery also grew. By the 1660s, legislatures began to legalize the activity and created slave codes to
manage their lives. During war, race based slavery was very common throughout both sides captives.
Although Europeans did hold other Europeans captive, they were never enslaved, unlike the Native
Americans and Africans. The color of the prisoner was a vital characteristic that was used to decide
their future during combat. For the next few centuries, slaves were sold, traded, and kidnapped
between slave owners. Slavery eventually became one of the leading causes of America s bloody Civil
War, impacting the

Unnatural Events In Macbeth Essay
Macbeth, a once courageous warrior, consequently became a tyrant dictating over the people of
Scotland. His tragic flaw, ambition, forces him to become power hungry leading to his decision to
murder King Duncan. This sends the kingdom into an immediate spiral of unnatural events and
eventually leads to an upset of political and social discombobulation. The severed link between King
Duncan and God ultimately changes the kingdom of Scotland from a prosperous country into a
kingdom ruled by fear. Macbeth, a thrilling tragedy, is more than a tragic play, but rather a story of
ramifications caused by the severed link between God and King Duncan, which is shown through

This power, Macbeth gains leads to his intense paranoia, which eventually deteriorates his entire
persona. Macbeth begins to hire murders to kill anyone who questions him or is seen as a threat to the
king. This leads to many deaths such as Banquo, Macduff s family, and more. During the murder of
Banquo, his son Fleance escapes and the news that there s one down, [and] the son fled travels to
Macbeth making him even more paranoid (pg 97). Later he proceeds to hire another set of murders to
kill Macduff s entire family, in order to stop him from trying to overthrow him. Macbeth becomes
very violent and the entire kingdom of Scotland slips into uneasiness. The people of Scotland become
sacred and anxious that Scotland is not a safe country, negatively affecting the social aspect of the
kingdom. With everyone on the edge of the next turn of events, Macbeth s reign alters the community
s perspective of the Thane of Cawdor. With the entire country of Scotland submerged in fear, Macbeth
does a poor job of dealing with politics. Once he becomes the Thane of Cawdor he does not deal with
political issues in the correct manner. With his spontaneous actions he is quick to solve issues with
violence and murder rather than logical solutions. Macbeth s lack of political reign proves to be very
disheartening for Scotland. In one instance when Malcom and Macduff are talking about the hurt
Macbeth is causing Scotland, Malcom

But you don t have to spend a lot of money to be fashionable this fall. Leggings are a great way to
update your wardrobe this fall without breaking the bank. They are a great transition piece of clothing
that lets you stretch your summer dresses into the fall. There are a few things to keep in mind while
shopping for leggings this fall: They are meant as an accessory NOT as a replacement for pants! The
easiest way to pull of leggings is to have your outfit FIRST and the leggings to the outfit. So, go
through your closet and take a look at what you already have, and which outfits would benefit by
adding leggings to them. This will help stretch your summer wardrobe into the fall without spending a
lot of money. When looking at your outfits take note of what colors are in your outfits. When shopping
you will want to match the neutral colors in your outfits to a neutral pair of leggings. Keep it neutral.
Keep up with the current trend by keeping your leggings black, dark brown or dark grey. Pairing black
leggings with a mostly black dress helps you look chic, longer, and leaner. If you go with bright
leggings you might look like you ve had them for a few decades, or be mistaken for wearing your high
school daughter s pair. Do not under any circumstances wear leggings with stirrups (the small band
that slides under your foot to keep them in place). This style is outdated. Your leggings should hit
about mid calf. If you are taller then they can be a little higher, but they shouldn t hit your knee. Please
note that there is a difference between leggings and footless tights/pantyhose! Footless pantyhose are
very light and sometimes see thru. Confusing the two could make for an embarrassing moment.
Leggings are not sold in the lingerie section. They are located with the other clothing, and usually near
dresses or long tunics. Clothing stores try to

Hamlet And The Movie Hamlet
The movie Hamlet has an identical script to the play, with the little stage direction present in the play
the director of the film had to interpret what he read and create the best scene possible from his
interpretations. The effects used in the film that stemmed from the director s interpretations of the play
are zoom ins, jump cuts, flashbacks and music. The four main effects used in the film gave a stronger
idea of what is to come in the play based on the big amount of guilt shown by Claudius. During the
film, the director uses zoom ins and jump cuts to illustrate the fear Claudius feels when he is exposed
by Hamlet. When actors come to the Danish castle to perform for the royalty, Hamlet requests that
sixteen lines be added to the play. These added words would tell the exact way Claudius poisoned the
King and for what reason. When the actors perform the play and recites the sixteen lines, Hamlet joins
the actor on stage and begins to yell while looking directly into Claudius s eyes. As Hamlet is yelling
towards Claudius in rage he exclaims, You shall see anon how the murderer gets the love of Gonzago
s wife. While yelling towards Claudius, the camera switched between the two six times during the
span of 3 seconds. This is to allow the film audience to recognize the negative and damning effects
Hamlet s words are causing towards Claudius. As Hamlet is looking into the eyes of Claudius, Hamlet

United States vs South Africa Healthcare
AFRICA VS UNITED STATES
In our world each country has a set of standards to follow in order to establish health care insurance
for people in different communities. The state contributes about 40% of all the expenditures on health
while the public health sector delivers 80% of the population. Many resources are concentrated in the
private health sector. These resources see to the health needs of the remaining 20% of the population.
Public health consumes around 11% of the government s total budget. The way the resources are
allotted, and the standard of health care delivered, varies from country to country. Although there are
similarities between South Africa and the United States regarding healthcare, South Africa remains at
a lower ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Theses similarities are associated with rapidly rising cost and large, underserved populations. It is also
important to recognize the significant differences between the United States and South Africa. South
Africa is also less developed and has fewer resources than the US. South Africa has a large private
sector that is balanced to absorb management technology pioneered in the United States.
There is a move from a noncompetitive insurance environment to a competitive one because the
competition was not by hospitals to provide the best and cheapest care, but rather among the insurers
to get the healthiest patients. Consumer driven plans are central to the process because they are ideal
for risk selecting the young and fit who have been driven to new plans. Healthy people could watch
their account balances grow which leaves the truly sick behind in traditional plans. This particular type
of competition is being used to attract the healthy and in turn lead to price increases because insurers
have little incentive to control the prices medical providers are charged. It is the responsibility of the
patients to worry about the cost and the patient does not have the same power as the insurance
competitors do. According to a key South African regulator, Alex van den Heever of the Council for
Medical Schemes, Competition based on the shifting of risk

started to write books and stories to show that women can be put in situations where they break
adversity and show their worth against men. Men used to believe that they were above women at all
times and that no matter what they could do what they would like to a woman and not be questioned,
and this is where gender roles and social norms started to be a huge factor in everyday life. In both the
thousand and one nights and the Decameron, women are seen as not worthy of much and are seen as
being downgraded in many situations. Even though certain social norms and behaviors are portrayed

In the Decameron, women are viewed as powerless, but if the reader reads between the lines they will
see that women hold most of the power because the wife still gets her way and the husband is left
alone. The roles are evident for both men and women and that is whatever the man wants usually is
what happens, except for the suicide attempt. In both the Decameron and the thousand and one night s
women have certain roles set about women, which include that women are under men and should
always do what the man says.
In the thousand and one nights, women can be seen as degrading themselves while doing the act of
cheating. After King Shahrayar witness his wife cheating on him, he told his brother that No one is
safe in this world. Such doings are going on in my kingdom and in my very palace. Perish the world
and perish life! (560) This proved that he did not respect women anymore because his wife was
cheating on him in his own area, and this was a representation of his wife degrading herself since she
looked for other sources of love and feelings. The action of cheating showed that women cheat on
their husbands to take revenge because of the unfair and unrightfully treatment that they are put
through. After the cheating, the King sees down on women because of how he was treated. This

A Critique on Freakonomics, A Nobel by Levitt and Dubner
In Levitt and Dubner s novel, Freakonomics, they deal with the sensitive subject of abortions in
chapter four. During this section, Levitt and Dubner are purposing that the drop of crime is not
because of the many popular ideas they address but instead because of abortions becoming legalized.
Providing proof to their argument, they list out all the popular ideas that many people believe to be the
cause of the drop in crime and then one by one explain why these ideas could not fit into the massive
crime drop. After explaining the list of popular ideas, they finally come out and state what their take
on the crime drop is and explaining why they believe this explanation instead of the ones listed before
(115 145). Levitt and Dubner s flow of writing and logic are shown very strong in this section and
provide an easy and understandable read to the audience. Using this form of writing also creates an
easier understanding for when they get to their point and distracts the reader into taking account of
what they say instead of how offensive it is.
In the beginning of the chapter Levitt and Dubner tell the story the story of how a Communist dictator
of Romania, Nicolae Ceausescu, set a new law to have abortions illegalized and how it ended up
backfiring on him (115 117). Opening with a story, they were able to grab the reader s attention while
also proving a point to their main argument about how legalizing or illegalizing a law can create a
huge impact on the country. While the

My High School Poem By Alvin Schwartz
the fifth grade is not as fun as they advertise. she said at the beginning we would be doing science
experiments and all that junk, but that stuff has not occurred and the year is almost over. I was reading
scary stories poems by alvin schwartz. It was ten minutes before the bell rang and the whole room was
silent. Normally they would be scurrying for their stuff and mrs.morgan would be complaining, but
this day is different, everybody seems more tranquill I kept reading my favorite poem over and over, it
was in my (at the time) favorite book , called scary stories treasury by alvin schwartz. the ghost with

Although the product itself is purchased from various producers across the United States and Mexico
(Edgar, 2015), Sanfilippo s manufacturing site for its pecan products demonstrates a well informed
decision making choice.
As a seasonally based product capable of being stored for up to 5 years based on storage conditions,
Sanfilippo could have realistically chosen any location within the US. After beginning its pecan
location in a small store front in Chicago (Sanfilippo, 2012), the company expanded in 1991 to
multiple locations strategic to the product produced. The Selma, Texas location used primarily to
produce pecans supports storage of the in shell product in an environmentally stable geographic
location (Sanfilippo, 2016). The small suburban community meets many of the most common location
decision making criteria with low labor and transportation costs, energy costs, low union labor
participation impacting labor and management costs (Kalantari, 2013).

Taming Of The Shrew Play Vs Play

Why Go Tankless
Why Go Tankless? There are two basic types of water heater storage and tankless. They both work as
their names imply. With a storage water heater, the water is kept and heated on site in a tank. The
water in the tank is kept hot continuously by a heater. As you might guess, once the tank is empty it
can take some time for it be full of hot water again. A storage water heater does have some advantages
at first glance, but these are all minor or eradicated over time. For instance they are cheaper to buy and
install but this saving is soon lost due to higher energy costs. That need to always keep and great big

This is the big one. You ll save a lot of money with a tankless water heater. It uses much less energy
and so costs a lot less to run. A tankless water heater will easily pay for itself in savings over time *
Unlimited hot water. In my childhood we had storage hot water and it seems every morning we had
arguments over somebody using all the hot water. Cold showers aren t fun. Long hot showers are. *
Constant water pressure. Storage heaters start out with good pressure but as the tank empties the
pressure can drop. Tankless heaters offer constant pressure. * Less physical space * May qualify for a
tax deduction. Energy conservation is big these days and going tankless may even qualify you for a
tax deduction. While there is effectively no contest in the storage vs. tankless choice, there is a minor
disadvantage with tankless and that is they are a little more expensive to buy and install. But since that

Essay Mergers and Acquisitions
Nowadays mergers and acquisitions are regarded as a key strategic option for the organisations all
over the world. According to Huang and Kleiner (2004) mergers and acquisitions have become the
principal means by which companies have the opportunity to grow revenues due to factors such as
gloabalisation, rapid technological changes, a long term bull market and strategic barriers to growth.
Porter and Singh (2010) admit that mergers and acquisitions play an important role in reallocation of
resources in an economy. Despite the huge increase of corporate mergers and acquisitions during the
last decades many surveys show that the majority of them fail (Nguyen and Kleiner 2003).The

Roll (1986) states that the hubris model indicates that over confident managers make wrong
estimations about the value of the potential targets and as a consequence they decrease the value of
their shareholders wealth when the acquisition is completed.
The main objective of mergers and acquisitions is to increase market share and shareholder value by
decreasing costs and implementing improved services (Nguyen and Kleiner 2003). Each organisation
in this process targets the strengths and the capabilities of the other in order to improve its position in
the market. Stallworthy and Kharbanda (1988) argue that one of the main objectives of mergers and
acquisitions is the acquirer s diversification with minimum cost in order to be protected and be
restructured in a possible crisis. Keenan and White (1982) mention that firms seek for synergies in
order to diversify and reduce the possibility of bankruptcy, achieve a better fit between the talents of
corporate managers and the resources at their disposals and simultaneously acquire a bigger market
share. Moreover Moon (1976) remarks that many firms choose to spread the risks by branching out
into other unrelated industries or trades.
Furthermore, mergers and acquisitions give the opportunity to buyers to grow faster, to achieve larger
scales of economies and profitability with an existed market share, to eliminate a competitor by
acquiring it and complete effective

Competing Claims. The Disputes In The Scs Have Evolved
Competing Claims
The disputes in the SCS have evolved over decades and engage multiple regional states that have
territorial claims in the South China Sea including China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia,
and Taiwan. While not located directly in the region the United States, Australia, Japan, and India all
hold economic, territorial, and security concerns over the disputes. Specifically, the United States has
been involved in the territorial disputes to uphold maritime security laws and freedom of navigation.
The main contended island groups in the SCS include the Pratas, Spratlys, Paracels Islands, and the
Scarborough Shoal, all claimed by China. The Philippines claims the Scarborough Shoal and a few of

The Spratly Islands are also at the geographic center of the competing claims in the SCS. Many of the
islands are uninhabited, but this has led some nations to establish settlements on islands to strengthen
their claims.
In as much as China s increasingly assertive claims in the South China Sea to various islands are a
way to bolster their reach territorially for rights related to fishing and other resource rights, but more
importantly they also extend beyond that to exhibit China s global ambitions.
China does this by using their claimed territory to build and bolster military outposts with the creation
of airfields, thereby exerting their presence of control in the region.
International Norms that Shape the Disputes
The disputes in the SCS are subjugated to set of international norms which influence the response
made by states towards competing assertions of sovereignty over territory. UNCLOS is an essential
component in determining states claims in the SCS as it establishes a legal framework to govern all
uses of the oceans (Beckman, 2013, p. 1). It is also crucial in validating the claims made in the SCS,
because all states in the region have ratified the convention, including China, Vietnam, Malaysia, the
Philippines, Brunei, and Indonesia. The convention does have limitations, in that it does not help
states determine sovereignty over land territory,

  • 2. Narrative Frames and Ambiguity in Henry James The Turn... Narrative frames and Ambiguity in The Turn of The Screw Since it was written, Henry James The Turn of The Screw has been acclaimed by numerous critics to be one of the most immaculate, engrossing and terrifying ghost stories ever produced. Harriet Waters Preston described it as, a sheer mortal horror, like the evil dream of a man under the spell of a deadly drug 1, and Gertrude Atherton said, [it] is the most horrifying ghost story ever written! 2 I will argue that it is the narrative frames enclosing The Turn of The Screw that are largely responsible for the reception the book has received. They serve two main purposes; one, to build up an element of suspense and tension before the governess s account actually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These layers serve to establish tension and suspense before the story actually begins. There are many dramatic devices employed in these outer frames to heighten this sensation. At the outermost layer of all, the title of the text itself, The Turn of the Screw , imparts an ominous atmosphere. Whether or not the screw refers to a sinister thumb screw for torture purposes, or merely to a simple fastening device, the implication is that a ghost story involving children is a degree more oppressive than one that concerns only adults.3 In the second paragraph of the text, Douglas says, If the child gives the effect another turn of the screw, what do you say to two children ? 4 The very setting of the fireside at which Griffin s guests swap stories establishes an atmosphere with which many of us are familiar. We can all relate to sitting around a fire exchanging ghost stories. By employing this particular narrative frame James encourages the reader to abandon their scepticism and give themselves over to a belief in the ghosts. The reader shares in the eagerness of the guests to be frightened; to be delighted by horror. Upon seeing Douglas distress at the thought of the tale he must tell, and its dreadful dreadfulness , one of the female guests actually cries, Oh how delicious! 5 Douglas own elusiveness and ... • 3. Essay on History of Disparity in Development History of Disparity in Development Human is one of few creatures of mother earth that can think and decide what is right or wrong. Due to that special characteristic, people are always curious about something and try to find the reason about it. In 1974, Jared Diamond was staying in Papua New Guinea, and one day, a local named Yali asked Diamond a deceptively simple question Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo, but we black people had little cargo of our own? (NGO, 2005) Jared thought it was very interesting question and made a research for more than 20 years. As a result, Jared was able to find his own conclusion and wrote a book call Guns, Germs, and Steel based on knowledge he gathered from different places of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People started using plows using animals and animal s dung worked as a great fertilizer. Meanwhile animals in Papua were not that useful. All they did was just providing meat. Due to that, people in Papua needed to spend more time on gathering food while people in Fertile Crescent started to develop day by day. People in Fertile Crescent now had more people and they were able to feed technicians who work with irons. This made huge difference in technological development. There are some other theories of human development. The most popular theory is about water (Marrone, 2014/02/04). The key role water plays in human development is well accepted (Donoso, 2009) throughout the world. Unlike Diamond s theory, people who support the theory that water is a main factor say domestication was possible because of existence of water and support with 3 different examples. First example is in 11500 years ago, people didn t have technology to pump the water, so they had to use their hand in order to provide water to plants and animals. Due to that, people naturally moved to the region that is close to the water (Briggs, 2009 and 2014/02/03). Second example is, in ancient world, people s average life expectancy was 20 years (Galor/ Moav, 2007), it is caused by many reasons, but the main reason was disease. By washing their body everyday with water made them cleaner and healthier than before. Longer lifespan means more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Fremont High School By Jonathan Kozol Emmanuel Onwuka PROF. Nawrocki ENGL100 18 November 18, 2014 FREMONT HIGH SCHOOL BY JONATHAN KOZOL Schools lacking social utilities that are needed to promote the academic status of its students is an issue. Whether these benefits should be kept opened or closed is widely debated in most societies. The condition of such schools is an important issue because it determines the future of its students academically. Some issues facing schools include social, public and economic issues; this essay will consider arguments concerning the social, public and economical causes of this problem through the use of Jonathan Kozol s FREMONT HIGH SCHOOL , which was written to expose the poor conditions in Fremont high school and seek in the improvement of the school system. In his essay, Kozol identified Fremont high school as a public school that has over a thousand students enrolled but does not have a convenient environment suitable for learning. Some classes are taught in portables or storage rooms and they do not even have windows and this is where the students are being taught. Students are given inadequate time to eat and rest for breaks before continuing with their classes and some students do not bother to eat. Rodents run freely in Fremont high. Hamburger buns have rat bite marks and rat droppings have been found around the school. • 5. The Voodoo Of Voodoo Dolls It is easy to look back at history and see a clear pattern and relation between different cultures, objects, rituals, etc. When you take a deeper look into origins, you ll often be surprised by what you find. Minkondi (plural for nkondi), are sculptures made and used in the 19th century by African cultures. They served a very specific purpose and had a very sacred importance. The Nkisi Nkondi functioned as a hunter healer of conflicts. The people would take their worries, requests and fears to the figure to call on the spirits. Voodoo dolls on the other hand, are often misunderstood and misrepresented. The Voodoo doll is a ritualized way of calling on spirits to target a specific person. The doll can be used a number of things including luck, power, love and most commonly recognized, for evil and harm. The Nkisi Nkondi sculptures and Voodoo dolls, even though they are from different cultures and time periods, have a number of similarities and one may have influenced the creation of the other. Nkisi refers to the spiritual being of the figure, and nkondi comes from the word konda, which means to hunt, refers to the figure itself. Minkondi, representative of hunters, can catch those who undermine the frame of society. The Nkisi Nkondi is typically shaped in a human form. There are few Nkisi Nkondi that are shaped like dogs, which were seen as sacred animals. The Nkisi Nkondi weren t literal representations of the spirits that they called on. Efficacy Of Antidepressant Medication Therapy Cuijpers (2017) identifies that over the last 40 years there have been approximately 500 randomized trials looking at the efficacy of treating depression with psychological methods. The studies chosen provide insight into the lack of efficacy of antidepressant medication therapy, as well as the effectiveness of psychological therapies. The evidence provided in the studies appears to support one another. Compare and Contrast Fournier et al. (2010) and Barbui et al. Collective Wisdom The collective wisdom across studies supports the use of cognitive behavioral therapy for minor depression. However, there are limitations to prescribing cognitive behavioral therapy frequently for the first line treatment of depression. The primary limitation identified is the inadequate number of therapists to administer cognitive behavioral therapy (Linde et al., 2015). Additional research is attempting to identify successful methods of administering cognitive behavioral therapy in a remote fashion (Linde et al., 2015). Overall, there is an agreement that patients with minor depressive symptoms should be prescribed a form of psychotherapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy is shown to be favorable over the other types of psychotherapies for depression treatment. However, some bias may exist due to cognitive behavioral therapy being the most studied form of psychotherapy. The evidence shows that cognitive behavioral therapy should be prescribed as a first line treatment. However, the large number of antidepressants prescribed by primary providers demonstrates a disconnect between evidence and practice. After reviewing the most up to date literature and APA guidelines (2013) the consensus is that psychotherapy should be prescribed for outpatients with minor depressive symptoms. Sufficient evidence suggests that cognitive behavioral therapy should be prescribed for all patients with minor depressive symptoms. Application ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The representatives of South Carolina fought to not have the Tariff of 1828 because it would have hurt the farmers of South Carolina financially. The Tariff of 1828 would have raised the price on their cost of planting for the advantage of the north. Daniel Webster led the argument, in which he wholeheartedly believed that the states right to reject the Tariff. Webster made some effective arguments. There is always some doubt in the back of the mind, what if this happens or that happens. Tillie Olsen shows in her story I Stand Here Ironing the conflict and the results of one mother s decisions. She illustrates the back, forth motion of the iron as the back and forth doubts in the mother s mind. The detachment between mother and daughter in I Stand Here Ironing is understandable. The mother struggles daily with the decisions she made while her oldest child Emily was a young baby and toddler. Obstacles in Emily s life have made it hard for her mother to forget these decisions, and life with Emily only reinforces these decisions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The separation of feelings between mother and daughter are so severe that Emily feels as though her heart is torn in two. As Olsen has done throughout her story, the visual imagery clarifies the story. Olsen writes about the way boys and girls appear when they live at a convalescent home, the girls still wear those gigantic red bows and the ravaged looks... (Olsen) The children have a look of longing; they are stripped of their emotions. They desire for nothing more than to be with their families again; they want to feel loved and cared for. Instead, they are in a home that does not allow emotions or love. Emily was again in that familiar place of being unwanted. Olsen describes how the parents and children are kept at a distance so as not to be contaminated by parental germs or physical affection. However, the children are kept away so that they would not tell their parents about the wretched home that they live in. After eight ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Theme Of Masculinity In Macbeth In the play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare, several characters become very selfish and their behaviors end up destroying their loyalty to their own country, friends, and family. The unity needed between a king and his colleagues is very important to ones country for not only the present but also far in the future. Typically if the king has a son for a child than he shall be king after the father dies, but there are several characters that believe that they should be king or that their families should be higher up in society. A true man has the ideals of strength, courage, and love while in the play Shakespeare makes it very clear that the main focuses of a man are strength, power, the force of will, and physical courage. However it seems that Lady Macbeth is the most masculine of them all. She uses her husband several times; aware that he will perform the actions that she wishes upon. The suspicion that manhood is bias to violence is a strong recurring theme. Lady Macbeth even states that she wishes to be a man in order to perform her husbands requests sent upon her. Come, you spirits / That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, / And fill me from the crown to the toe top full / Of direst cruelty. (346) Amir s prayer is very interesting because it is for him, and not for Sohrab. This is an extremely selfish thing to do because time and time again Amir puts himself before everyone else. His selfishness has come to the point that he would say, I pray God doesn t let [his hands] get stained with the blood of [Sohrab] too, this comment is showing how Amir s initial reaction is to worry about his conscience. China does this by using their claimed territory to build and bolster military outposts with the creation of airfields, thereby exerting their presence of control in the region. International Norms that Shape the Disputes The disputes in the SCS are subjugated to set of international norms which influence the response made by states towards competing assertions of sovereignty over territory. UNCLOS is an essential component in determining states claims in the SCS as it establishes a legal framework to govern all uses of the oceans (Beckman, 2013, p. 1). It is also crucial in validating the claims made in the SCS, because all states in the region have ratified the convention, including China, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei, and Indonesia. The convention does have limitations, in that it does not help states determine sovereignty over land territory, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
