attempts to decode and explain such symbols, some of which have been made by Origen of
Alexandria. Origen proposed a threefold structure for the meanings of Scripture, and I will be using
this structure to explain a passage found in the Bible to its greatest potential. Afterwards, I will be

One meaning of Scripture, according to Origen, is the literal interpretation. This involves the body,
narrative, and historical account of the meaning. One of the passages I will be analyzing is Mark 12:1
12, otherwise known as the Parable of the Tenants. In this passage, Jesus tells the chief priests,

community called Gordon Heights which is a predominantly African American Neighborhood in
Coram NY. This small community was surrounded smaller towns in Suffolk county New York mainly
composed of Families of Italian, German Jewish descent. Growing up we spent our weekends and
summers in the Bronx and Spanish Harlem, which allow my siblings and I to stay in touch with our
Afro Latino roots. Attending school on long Island in comparison to NY city schools, was a blessing
of sorts because the quality of education was better. This is where I learned to develop relationships
with people of all races, even though we were in the minority.
Keeping in touch with our communities in Bronx Harlem, during my senior year in High School was
able to join a program called The International Youth Leadership Institute, sponsored by Teachers
College and Columbia University. Through this program, in which I was fortunate to be a part of, is
where opportunity to travel outside the United States to Senegal, West Africa. This experience
changed my life forever in which I now see the world through a different lens.
At an early age in life, the elders of the family always taught us about the African history and what it

In the past I used to be more focused in religion and sports, since I used to think of the synagogue and

named Opal. She is new to town and encounters a dog at a grocery store that helps her along her new
journey. Throughout this book Opal gets to know everyone and eventually becomes friends with them.
The ending may not be a perfect one, however, it does have a good one. This book supports the
realistic fiction criteria. The author does a good job in portraying this book as having realistic
characters, scenery, and plot. I partially liked the way the author crafted the characters when making

When I had finished the book I felt I got to know the characters as another person. A Second thing I
liked about how the book was crafted was the scenery. The author made the scenery look like any
other small town. It has a library called the Herman W. Block Memorial Library, (DiCamillo 40). It
has a church, a trailer park, and a Gertrude s pet store, (DiCamillo 50), this is where Opal received her
first job. Every student including myself can picture these places in their heads easily. Some may have
not seen a trailer park before, but they can take what they saw on television and put it into pictures.
The scenery is realistic because most small town have all of these places and many students can relate
to this in some way or another. The last point that stood out to me about the crafting of this book was
the plot. The author used recurring plots. A plot that is mentioned in one part of the book but then
comes up in another part but gives a larger meaning then before. For instance, Otis tells Opal he has
has a dark past and was arrested but does not explain to her as to way he was arrested. Later on in the
book though, he tell Opal he was arrested because, I pushed down a police officer for not letting me
play my guitar out in public, (DiCamillo 131). I believe the plot is one of the important aspects of

The Pursuit of Happyness In society there are still differences in classes such as higher class, middle
class, and lower class. In sociology, we observed a film called The Pursuit Happyness, where we
witnessed the struggles a father went through to succeed. Chris Gardner, who was played by Will
Smith, is living in his apartment with his wife and his son. Due to their struggles, the mother walks out
on and leaves Chris struggling alone with his son. In the film Chris Gardner applies for an unpaid
internship for a competitive stockbroker company where out of twenty men, only one gets the job.
While he is on his internship, we see the hardships of getting kicked out of his apartment to staying at

sociological lens, The Pursuit of Happyness will be analyzed according to the major three sociological
paradigms: structural functionalism, social conflict theory, and symbolic interactionalism. As the

Allen Poe is a first person narrative poem that is truly a dark poem of one s sanity when losing a loved
one. The poem is eighteen stanzas long that contains 108 lines. The poem uses many literary and
poetic devices to help construct the eerie atmosphere. Poe begins the poem by describing a setting that
symbolizes darkness and death perfectly Once upon a midnight dreary (1). Poe uses an internal rhyme
to heighten the effect of the setting. He does this to foreshadow the events that happen later on in the
poem, that the reader will soon begin to understand the dreariness of the setting. Poe is a mastermind
of using these devices to draw the reader in and help them understand the narrator on a deeper level
during the reading of the poem. As stanza one continues, Poe uses an alliteration in line 3 of the poem,
While I nodded, nearly napping (3), by using the repetition of the n sound throughout the stanza I
would argue he is trying to build suspense of the narrator answering the door. Poe uses many rhyme
schemes throughout the poem to give a bigger meaning to each word. The first stanza is no different.
Poe uses many internal rhymes in the stanza, but even uses an end rhyme in lines 2, 3, 4, and 5. He
uses the rhyme scheme ABCBBB in the first stanza. As Poe continues, the narrator begins to
remember his lost loved one Lenore . Poe begins to go darker into the poem creating an even larger
suspense, and added dramatic effect as the narrator slowly approaches the door to open it. Ah,
distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December; (6) Poe is using symbolism again to further his
dark atmosphere that he created in the first stanza. Poe is trying to get the reader to understand the
severity of the narrator s depression about Lenore . Poe in the very next line continues his emphasis on
the eeriness that is this poem s atmosphere. By describing the embers of the fire going out, he is
creating an image of darkness soon approaching. Because once the embers go out, the light goes out. I
would argue that Poe is foreshadowing even more of what will happen later in the poem. As the stanza
continues, you soon realize

stock market crashed in 1929. At first people did not fully understand the state of the economy, they

In 1892, the Plessy v. Ferguson case had emerged from a conflict from Louisiana s Separate Car Act.
The law required that railroads have separate but equal accommodations, prohibiting African

Often in literature there are common themes that occur throughout eras and genres to link two
otherwise different pieces of writing. One particular example of this occurrance can be seen in
Margaret Atwood s The Handmaid s Tale and William Shakespeare s The Taming of the Shrew.
Although these works have been written in very different time periods and use separate styles, there
are two themes which link both stories and convey a very similar message. Strict societal roles and the

true light or darkness within them.
