Pathways Through Financial Crisis

Pathways Through Financial Crisis: India
Arunabha Ghosh
India survived near crisis situations twice in the 1990s. How did internal and external constraints
shape that country s ability to respond to the crises? This article argues that India s success can be
attributed to four sets of decisions taken during the period 1991 1997: devaluation, involvement of the
IMF, partial liberalization of the domestic financial sector, and gradual opening up of the external
sector. The article analyzes the options, political opposition, and eventual outcomes for each set of
decisions. India s ownership of its reform program helped set the pace of reform, while close
interaction between technocrats and the IMF added ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Petroleum import costs in 1990 1991 increased by half to US$5.7 billion.10 The government had to
bear the additional burden of airlifting and rehabilitating 112,000 Indian workers from the Middle East
as remittances from the region declined.11 The second shock was global recession: world growth had
declined from 4.5 percent in 1988 to 2.25 percent in 1991.12 Export growth in the United States India
s largest market turned negative in 1991. Conditions in the Soviet Union, another major export
destination, had also worsened. In 1990 1991 India s exports grew only 4 percent. India was also
suffering from internal political instability. The fragile National Front coalition faced a nationwide
crisis in the summer of 1990 over its affirmative action policies. By autumn, a campaign by the BJP
(an upper caste dominated coalition partner) to build a Hindu temple at the site of a sixteenth century
mosque in Ayodhya resulted in widespread communal violence. The government collapsed when the
BJP pulled out. A new minority government failed to pass the scheduled budget in February 1991
when it lost the Congress Party s external support. In May 1991, while

reaction, and in parallel to these developments, the economic situation worsened. By September 1990,

The Truth Behind Aladdin
The Truth behind Aladdin The Disney movie Aladdin, created in 1992, fulfilled its purpose of
entertaining children as well as adults with its colorful and vivid characters, yet it failed to portray the
setting Disney created for Aladdin while leaving some parts of the true story untold. Aladdin
introduces the main character Aladdin as a poor man living in the streets of Iraq who falls in love with
Princess Jasmine; however, he cannot marry her since she can only marry a prince. Later on Aladdin is
thrown into prison where Jafar, the villain, manages to make a deal with Aladdin in which he will
grant Aladdin anything he wants in exchange for retrieving the magic lamp from a cave. In this trip
Aladdin encounters the magic carpet that later

U.s. Congressional Reconstruction Era
The Reconstruction Era In 1865, the city was devastated because of the crisis that left the civil war.
Therefore, political, economic and social issues needed to be resolved to improve and reconstruct the
Nation. It was the period in which the State and local governments in the South were restored, and the
Southern states were unified to the rest of the States. This essay emphasizes the differences between
congressional and presidential reconstruction. Also, it highlights the achievements and success of
both. Although the presidential and congressional Reconstruction has some similarities, they also
disagreed on many points and created a conflict between each other. Nevertheless by early 1867, the
new Congress passed the Reconstruction Act of 1867 over President Johnson s veto. The
Congressional Reconstruction Plan dramatically changed politics in the South. The reconstruction was
a process of reformation that affected the whole nation. There were three main Reconstruction plans.
Two were presidential The Lincoln and Johnson s Plan. Meanwhile, one was Congressional. Lincoln
started a Reconstruction plan during the Civil War. To summarize, he implemented before his death,
the Emancipation Proclamation, the 10% Plan and he tried to extend suffrage. But his Plan failed. The
only thing that remained of his plan was to create the Freedmen s Bureau, established in March 1865,
to assist the newly freed slaves in transitioning to a life of slavery and a life of freedom. After

Frog And Toad
As I was reading through the different theories of language, I found myself relating to all of them in
some aspect. However, I relate mostly with the constructivist theory and have seen the benefits of this
theory play out in my own classroom.
My first year of teaching was at an international school in South Korea. The curriculum was based
mainly around rote memorization and testing. The students in my third grade class were required to
use basal readers and take weekly tests based on vocabulary and comprehension. Some students did
well and others struggled, especially students who were English language learners. What the tests did
not show was how well the students learned and comprehended when we did free or partner reading.

One topic of conversation that arose was about the animals, insects, reptiles and amphibians that
inhabit the rainforest. My students at the time were very drawn to frogs so during a reading lesson
about character traits I chose the book Frog and Toad Together by Arnold Lobel. In this short chapter
book Frog and Toad are best friends who enjoy different adventures together. It is a wonderful
example of friendship and loyalty. For this particular lesson students were analyzing their character
traits. As I was observing and participating in discussions around the classroom, I realized that many
of the students were wondering about the difference between a frog and toad and wondering if the
characters in the book reflected these differences. These insights made me realize that we should shift
the focus and research these differences. I contacted the librarian and he suggested I read them All
About Frogs by Jim Arnosky. Thus I choose this book as my expository example. This book provided
a wealth of information and vivid illustrations about different types of frogs and toads. The students
were extremely engaged in learning more about frogs and using this information to draw conclusions
about the fictional characters in Frog and Toad Together by Arnold Lobel. My students took the
initiative to learn and explore with very little push from me. It was one of my most memorable
lessons, that literally

Leadership Development Of Team Captains
This paper is an academic critique of the article by Christian Grandzol, Susan Perlis, and Lois Draina
(2010) entitled, Leadership development of team captains in collegiate athletics. Grandzol, Perlis, and
Draina were attempting to determine if participating in collegiate athletics was associated with
leadership development. The authors looked at five leadership practices that were analyzed through
the use of the Student Leadership Practice Inventory developed by James Kouzes and Barry Posner.
The author s research question was Are leadership practices of (A) model the way, (B) inspire a shared
vision, (C) challenge the process, (D) enable others to act, and (E) Encouraging the heart related to
athletic participation and leadership position? (Grandzol, Perlis, Draina, 2010, p. 405). Although the
Grandzol et al were looking at collegiate athletes in their study, they were trying to answer the age old
question; are leaders born or are they developed?
Review of Literature
Leadership has many definitions and has been described by many authors, political leaders, and
common men by different means. The great Green Bay Packers coach, Vince Lombardi, once said;
Leaders aren t born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And
that s the price we ll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal. The literature that the authors
reviewed justifies the argument that leaders are developed. Grandzol et al did not find much literature

An article by Anna Jo Bratton, Associated Press, describes well the dangers of my topic: piracy. In the
article, Bratton reported a recent legal matter that impacted Sarah Barg, a University of Nebraska
Lincoln sophomore, and her colleges. The RIAA, an anti piracy and plagiarism society had suspected
that many students at the university had been illegally downloading media content. Burg received an
email concerning the matter, but she was ignorant and considered it a fluke or scam. The email
suggested that she had supposedly downloaded a whopping 381 songs. The letter continued to say that
a lawsuit was possible, but they offered here an opportunity to avoid that circumstance. They

Christians uphold the belief that theft is sinful, but those of corrupt beliefs aren t included in those
certain guidelines. This is why plagiarism is greatly debated on. Plagiarism is mainly said to be
classified by the failure to give credit (pg. 203). This may be true if the act was unintentional, but that
is not always the case. Plagiarism is classified into four categories: Quotation, Paraphrase, Idea, and
Translation. Quotation Plagiarism is the most common and the most detected form. This type occurs
when a person forgets to include surrounding any content that is directly taken from another source.
For example:
An act or instance of using or closely imitation the language and thoughts of another author without
authorization and the representation of that author s work as one s own, as not crediting the original
author. (Dictionary.com).
The above information is correctly formatted with quotations. Quotations are placed at the beginning
and end of the information. This sentence written with quotation plagiarism is written like this:
An act or instance of using or closely imitation the language and thoughts of another author without
authorization and the representation of that author s work as one s own, as not crediting the original

Case Study Wilmar
As Asia s leading agribusiness group, Wilmar operated through a vertically integrated business model,
encompassing the entire value chain of agricultural commodity processing business. Through scale,
integration and logistics advantages, it was able to extract margins at each step of its value chain,
reaping operational synergies and cost efficiencies. Having significant manufacturing facilities and
extensive distribution networks in high growth Asian markets, it placed Wilmar in a good stead to
diversify into other agribusiness or products. Going forward, Wilmar should increase the status quo
with respect to its product diversification level. Predominantly focused on palm oil industry, it should
expand its business operations by diversifying into other businesses. A possible option is to expand
into sugar business and acquire Sucrogen, the largest producer of raw sugar in Australia. Having a

into the low cost sugar business. An entrance to sugar business enabled Wilmar to possibly enter the
global biofuel industry. There was a global trend of replacing fossil fuels with biofuels, driving its
long term demand growth, which made the sugar industry attractive. Riding with biofuel demand, it
can leverage this growth potential by increasing its sugar production and ethanol sales. With an

Charles Babbage And His Engines
The author, Wilkes, of this journal article reviews and criticizes Charles Babbage and his engines. The
title of the journal questions the current position Charles Babbage is known for, the father of
computing. Wilkes considers Babbage a great uncle of computing science instead of the father and
gives further details as in to why. The author doesn t only criticize Babbage s work but also informs
the readers on how they operate and what their function is. According to the text, Babbage s first
difference engine was not a very good idea (Wilkes 15). The difference engine only functioned to do
two different tasks which are to compute and tabulate polynomials. This basically states that the
difference engine could compute mathematical tables, but further reading attacks this claim. In order
for the difference engine to be able to compute, Babbage had to do a great amount of paper and pencil
computation in order to calculate the coefficients to be set on the engine (Wilkes 15). As a result, one
can criticize that the difference engine doesn t exactly work out mathematical tables on its own
without the help of the conductor. One could argue that, because of the time period, the difference
computer wasn t made to reduce human labor but to actually mechanize computations. The author also
elaborates onto the rough years Babbage had on his creations towards his engine. During the year
1832, Babbage had a dispute with his engineer and production of the engine hindered (Wilkes

evidence is when Mrs.Frisby goes to the rats and then they help her out by showing her around and
comforting her. The reason why they are helping her is because they knew her husband named
Mr.Frisby. He died because he got eaten by the cat Dragon I was talking about. The second evidence is
when Mr.Frisby was stuck in NIMH with the rest of the rats. The scientists at NIMH did some testing

Supply And Demand Of Gasoline
Gasoline is produced by a distillation process where crude oil is heated and fumes are captured and
converted into many products such as kerosene, jet fuel, and gasoline to name a few. Therefore the
price of crude oil, which is extracted from oil wells beneath the earths surface, is a major factor in gas
prices. The five leading oil producing countries and their approximate shares of the world supply of
oil are: Soviet Union 21%, Saudi Arabia 17%, The United States 15%, Venezuela 4%, and Mexico
4%. These five countries made up 61 % of the worlds oil production back in 1980 and an organization
called O.P.E.C. controls approximately four fifths of the worlds oil reserves in the non communist
world.
Factors effect to oil price
Price is depended on supply and demand. There are two different laws: The Law of Demand and the
Law of Supply. The Law of Demand is a relationship, which involves price and quantity. It states that
as the price of a product goes up (oil goes up), the quantity of the product (oil) will go down;
therefore, this is a strong relationship between price and quantity. The Law of Supply, however, is the
direct relationship between price and the quantity in which the seller produces. So as price goes up,
the quantity the seller will produce will go up because the price allows for the seller to produce more
output. Demand shifts are caused by economic growths. Economic growth is an increase in the
capacity of an economy to produce goods and services, from a certain

Private Companies are companies that are either owned by non governmental organizations or by a
relatively small number of shareholders or company members which does not offer or trade its
company stock (shares) to the general public on the stock market exchanges, but rather the company s
stock is offered, owned and traded or exchanged privately (Google).
Private companies are very similar to independent companies; the only real difference is that private
companies can choose their shareholders. Private companies don t need to meet the strict exchange
commission requirements that public companies have to, like having to give a certain percentage of
their income to the government.
Independent companies are companies which work on their own; they can make decision on their own
and are free of influence by government or corporate interests. Independent companies are different to
subsidiaries as Independent companies are not owned by any conglomerate. An advantage of an
independent company is that all the money the company makes is its own profit instead of being
shared with other companies. A disadvantage of an independent media company is that they often find
it difficult to survive against competition from bigger companies that are owned by conglomerates as
they are better known, which reduces their source of income resulting in bankruptcy.
Although if an independent media company is

The Impact Of Divorce On The Family
The words from the Bible, therefore, what God has joined together, let no man separate have been
habitually used during weddings throughout history. Stepping into the 21st century, those words have
not been faithfully lived up to, evident through the numerous counts of divorces in society. Divorce
can be defined as the legal dissolution of a marriage by a court order and in this generation, is seen as
the norm. Apart from race, other major predictors of divorce include age at marriage, education,
premarital births and religion. (Bartolic, Martin, White, 2013). Divorce often tends to be thought of in
a monolithic way, as if everyone who gets a divorce goes through the same process. The impact of
divorce on the well being of children have been notoriously viewed with a negative lens for many
years due to possible risk factors that may affect children and their upbringing as they navigate
through life as their parents separate. However, families have the ability to strengthen and bounce
back even stronger with more knowledge through these experiences. This paper thoroughly discusses
the impacts of divorce and its effects on family structure and the ways in which families can
collectively work together to overcome crises and be resilient. This includes the many protective
factors that help families overcome their challenges and adversities such as positive social
interactions, personal protective factors, and belief systems in which all of these aspects encompass

RATIOS TELL A STORY 2011
Financial results and conditions vary among companies for a number of reasons. One reason for the
variation can be traced to the characteristics of the industries in which companies operate. For
example, some industries require large investments in property, plant, and equipment (PP E), while
others require very little. In some industries, the competitive productpricing structure permits
companies to earn significant profits per sales dollar, while in other industries the product pricing
structure imposes a much lower profit margin. In most low margin industries, however, companies
often experience a relatively high rate of product throughput. A second reason for some of the ... Show

Preventing Underage Drinking
It s both dangerous and against the law, but young people between the ages of 12 and 20 are
responsible for 11 percent of the alcohol consumed annually in the United States. Underage drinking
also accounts for more than 4,300 deaths of young people in the U.S. each year. Here are some signs
that may indicate a teenager has been abusing alcohol. Major red flags include differences in sleep
patterns, appetite, and change of friends or physical appearance. When teens fall in with a social circle
that drinks heavily, they may display a change in attitude and hang out in places and with people they
did not associate with before. They may also lose interest in activities they used to participate in.

their children s friends, having regular conversations about life in general, connecting with other
parents about sending clear messages about the importance of not drinking alcohol, supervising all
parties to make sure there is no alcohol, encouraging kids to participate in healthy and fun activities
that do not involve alcohol. Research shows that children whose parents are actively involved in their

Overcoming Adversity In The United States
There are many ways to fight adversity. Even though Fighting using force is another way to solve the

how college kids who were being held in captivity (Zambrano 1) The guards were not given teaching,

The Rivalry Between Gene And Finny s Friendship
Keep your Friends Close and your Enemies Closer Set in 1942 during World War II, A Separate Peace
by John Knowles deals with the hostility between two best friends, Gene and Finny. Gene is a decent
athlete, and an extremely smart student. Finny, on the hand, is an extremely capable athlete, but an
average student. While the World War II is happening somewhere far from Devon, a personal war
driven by envy and jealousy is diverging their friendship. What started as a friendly competition
between the two, turns into a deadly rivalry. The rivalry between Gene and Finny starts because Gene
grows extremely jealous of Finny athletic abilities. This happens because of the expectations the war
has put on the young adolescents at Devon. Since Gene and his friends are expected to enlist for the
army anyway, Gene s intellectuality gets overlooked, and Finny s athletic abilities gets praised. Gene s

The spectrum of jealousy and envy shifts to Finny side. Finny offers to train Gene for the olympics,
and persuades him that the war is fabricated to cover his true motive. This is the part where the turn in

over him. This is also the part where Finny manifest his new jealousy towards Gene. He says I ll hate

Amalgamated Widget Case Study
Assignment 6. You are the CISO for Amalgamated Widget. The company wants to protect the data
link when employees visit the company website to work from home. Alice argues for using SSL and
Tina argues for using IPsec. Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are used to allow a remote public
connection to an internal network. A VPN is essentially a virtual tunnel connecting a remote user
(Tunnel Vision). The traffic within the VPN tunnel is encrypted, and there are two ways to do this.
One way is Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) and the other is Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
Alice is arguing in the favor of SSL. Some reasons she might argue that SSL is a common protocol
and most web browsers have SSL capabilities already built in (Tony, 2003). Because of this, almost
every computer in the world is already equipped with the necessary software to connect to an SSL
VPN. Another pro of SSL is that they provide tunnels to specific applications rather than to the entire
corporate LAN. Any users on the SSL VPN connections can only access the applications that they are

Some arguments Tina might use are that IPSec secures all data that travels between two points without
an association to any specific application (Tunnel Vision). When connected on an IPsec VPN, the
client computer is a full member of the corporate network, being able to see and potentially access the
entire network. With most IPSec VPNs, they require third party hardware and/or software. In order to
access an IPSec VPN, the workstation or device in question must have an IPSec client software
application installed. This is a pro because the third party must have it properly configured since the
company is paying for its services and means an extra layer of security since the company should be
monitoring their program. . These would be additional hurdles that an attacker would have to get
through before gaining access to your network (Tony,

Domestic Violence And The Civil Rights Movement
Women have been active since the beginning of the early 1800 s and struggle until today s day, to fight
for equality. There were two women movement waves. The first wave was focused on the equality of
the women by working on voting rights. The second wave from 1963 to 1982 concentrated on social
issues. As in Collective Action for Social Change , Aaron Schutz and Marie Sandy stated in their book
women were tired of being second class citizens . The civil rights movement spillover inspired women
to create social movements by acting and building organizations focused on the issues that affected the
women. The social issues were child care, domestic violence, contraception, and women s health. One
of the major topics that the feminists focused on was domestic violence that still exists in today s day
worldwide. Domestic violence is an important issue because many believe that it s only a male to
female action but it s also female to male abuse. In addition, many assume that domestic violence is
only a physical act but there are other forms of abuse such as psychological, sexual, financial and
emotional. John Hamel, a licensed clinical social worker and editor of the journal Partner Abuse said,
A lot of people don t see domestic violence in the home as a crime, so they tend to downplay it.
Because many follow this ideology women would be brutally beaten. In addition, men are seen as the

The Soviet Union During The Cold War
In 1989, history in the West abruptly shifted course. The communist regimes in Eastern Europe fell,
severing these nations ties to the Soviet Union and sparking unprecedented political and economic
reforms. Two years later, the Soviet Union itself disintegrated. The Cold War ended along with it, a
sharply defined historical era stretching back to 1914. The end of the Cold War renewed the
commitment to democracy and capitalism in the West, accelerated the existing movement toward
unification in Europe, and left the United States standing as the sole military superpower in the world.

Psychological tests or psychological assessments are an important asset in the field of psychology.

The NEO PI R is available for purchase at the publisher s website, for individuals with a qualification
level of S or B. A level S qualification requires that buyers have a degree, certificate, or license to
practice in a health care profession, in addition to having the appropriate training and experience in
ethical administration, scoring, and interpretation of clinical behavioral assessment measures (NEO PI
R™, 2012). A level B qualification is very similar to the level S qualification in that it requires a
license or certification that required appropriate training and experience in the ethical and
knowledgeable use of psychological tests, or a degree in psychology, counseling, or a related field, in
addition to having completed coursework in test interpretation, psychometrics, measurement theory,
and educational statistics with a passing grade (NEO PI R™, 2012). This helps to ensure that the test
is only handled by individuals who have the necessary knowledge to interpret the test without
misinterpretation, which could have negative outcomes.
The NEO PI R is self administered, which means individuals who do not have formal training in
clinical psychology, personality or related fields can administer and score the instruments (Costa
McCrae, 1992). Although, it is highly suggested that the administrator, whether formally trained or
not, review the administration and scoring procedures from the manual. On the other hand,

A Statistical Test Essay
We live in a scientific world were the results of published research findings can dictate our very
existence. Yet, there is an increasing body of evidence that suggest that most publish research findings
are false (Ioannidis, 2005 page 0696). How can this be true? Part1: According to Ioannidis (2005), the
pre study probability of a relationship being true is R/ (R + 1). Where R is the ratio of the number of
true relationships to no relationships among those tested in the field (page 0696). The Null Hypothesis
(Ho) is what you want to disprove, what you want to prove to be not true. The Alternative hypothesis
(HA) on the other hand is what you want to prove to be true. Thus, in scientific research we are
looking to prove that relationships are true or to prove that they are not true. The power of a statistical
test is defined as the ability of the test to lead to a conclusion to accept the HA when in fact, the HA is
true (Wirtz, 2013). Also, since the probability of a statistical study depends on the prior probability,
statistical power, and the level of the observed P value, it means that the probability of a study finding
a true relationship is the power of 1 β (one type two error (Ioannidis, 2005 page 0696). Also, type 1
error is the probability of incorrectly rejecting a null hypothesis that should not be rejected (Wirtz,
2013). Factors that negatively affect the probability of true relationships are small studies, smaller
effect sizes, in a scientific field,

The Film Fight Club By David Fincher
The film Fight Club, directed by David Fincher, can be used as an example of a postmodern film.
Edward Norton plays the lead, but Edward s Norton s character goes unnamed throughout the entire
film; being credited only as The Narrator. As the narrator and a main character, Norton s character is
aware that he is in the movie for the majority of the film, but also takes part in the overall storyline.
He does that by breaking the fourth wall and interacting with the audience. The entire film is very fast
paced and complex, with each scene getting right to the point. There are numerous plots within Fight
Club, aside from the actual fighting. The characters in Fight Club are morally ambiguous. Tyler
Durden (Brad Pitt) has no sense of moral compass. He is introduced as a projectionist, who sneaks
pornography into films. He is also a thief, who steals human fat from the liposuction clinic to make
soap with. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= T1MckpC_Gc] He shows no mercy when it comes to
inflicting pain on others, telling The Narrator to stay with the pain and smacking him upside the face
while he chemically burns him. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvtUrjfnSnA] Later on he is
becomes the founder of Fight Club, where men get together and punch each other until they are
bloodied beyond recognition. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dC1yHLp9bWA] Clearly, Tyler is
lacking morals. Later on in the story, Fight Club is elevated into Project Mayhem, a club whose main

Essay about Pray the Devil Back to Hell
Pray the Devil Back to Hell.
Recently we watched Pray the Devil Back to Hell in English class. A few of the social issues
addressed were: poverty, peace and women s rights. The women were so fed up with how their
president has been treating everyone. He got young children to run around with guns and hurt innocent
people. Everyone was so below poverty that children were starving to death and there was nothing the
parents could do because they themselves were starving. The women wanted so badly to have peace to
stop the war, the fighting, and the poverty. The women just wanted a say in what was happening
around them, to get a chance to stop it all. Prior to watching this movie I didn t know how badly the

Critique of the Film: I thought Elizabeth was an amazing film, part period piece, part power struggle,
part love story. This film has the elements of a classic film. It is, as a whole, riveting, accurate, and
educational.
Play the Role of a Reviewer for the New Yorker: Consider:
(a) What was left out? Much of Elizabeth s latter rule was left out, instead the film opted to tell the
story behind her rise to power, and he she eventually gained a foothold on her power, securing herself
as The Virgin Queen of England. Other things that were left out were Elizabeth s formative years as a
child, although both of these really had little significance or bearing on the story that was being told in
this film.
(b) What was inaccurate? Nothing that I saw was not based on facts or completely accurate. The script
was highly researched as well all of the elements to the film were. Costumes and sets were perfectly in
check with the time period. Language was also very accurate with the times. I would say that much
attention to detail and accuracy was paid towards all elements of this film. This gives the film a
historical integrity while also making it very interesting and entertaining. This did not feel like a
boring Merchant Ivory movie. To me, this film was a kind of Goodfellas of the sixteenth century.
(c) Were conclusions drawn not warranted by the facts? Yes, as a character, Elizabeth wanted to

The Los Angeles Riots Of 1992
The Los Angeles riots of 1992, the worst civil disturbance in America, brought to light the deepening
racial and class divisions that were growing in the U.S. The division of between the rich and the poor,
the immigrants and natives, and majority and minority produced an atmosphere of fear, distrust, and
hopelessness. Due to the struggle to gain power by racial and ethnic groups, the aftermath of the Los
Angeles riots was clouded with racial and ethnical conflicts. However, the riots did increase racial
awareness for Korean Americans between the different ethnicities. Dialogue was opened between
people, whom prior to the riot, did not interact with each other. Even so, African American, Latino,
White, and Asian American victims shared their anger and resentment towards the government for not
providing adequate compensation and aid for their losses.
For Korean Americans and immigrants, the Los Angeles riots of 1992 dramatically altered their course
of life in America. They suffered the heaviest losses as a result of the riots with over 2,000 Korean
American owned stores being looted, burned, or damaged; this amounted to a gigantic sum of around

The Success Of The Mcdonald s Corporation
Around 95 percent of American households have a television, and with that 95 percent the average
american home will have at least one television turned on for around 7 hours according to the group
TV Free America. They also state that a child will watch around 20,000 commercials a year. But that
is just commercials there are also posters and ads on the radio as well, meaning that you cannot escape
the overwhelming amount of advertisements out there. Not only are there thousands of commercials
being seen each year, but also there are certain ways as to how these commercials are designed and
delivered. We give these very little thought but the companies slogans seem to stick to us like glue. In
1955, a man by the name of Ray Kroc founded the McDonald s Corporation. He bought the name
rights from brothers Dick and Mac McDonald. Kroc took this small restaurant and turned it into one
of the most well known companies in the world. By the end of 2008 Mcdonald s had grown to 31967
locations in 118 countries. With 58 million customers a day worldwide its hard to not see a
McDonalds ad around. ( James) People know that fast food is not good for the body but if it is fast,
tastes good, and cheap people will buy it. Thats because in this day and age most people are employed

Lack Of Discipline For Prosecutorial Consecutors
I. Introduction Prosecutorial misconduct is something that rarely gets brought to the light. Mainly
because prosecutors seldom get punished for their misconduct. Prosecutors are held to a higher moral
standard than the average person because of their knowledge of the law. However, some prosecutors
use this as an excuse to cut corners and think that he or she is untouchable. The job of a prosecutor is
to find justice, but some prosecutors just want to get a conviction every time. Some prosecutors are
willing to do whatever it takes to do so, even if it means breaking the rules.
II. Lack of Discipline for Prosecutors Believe it or not, prosecutorial misconduct is not new, it has
been going on for decades. Carmen Marino was a prosecutor in the Cuyahoga County District
Attorney s Office in Ohio for thirty years; he made many convictions over his career and even got an
award named after him. That was until most of those convictions got overturned because of his
misconduct. For example, failing to disclose key pieces of evidence to defendants before trial,
allowing prosecution witnesses to lie on the stand, and delivering improper closing statements. The
Center for Public Integrity reported that five of Marino s convictions had been overturned by
reviewing courts. One of the most well known cases of Marino s was a case involving someone named
Joseph D Ambrosio who was convicted of murder in 1989 and sentenced to death. D Amborsio filed a

Best friends forever we said. We pinky promised it would be for a lifetime, but I learned that some

Is Activity Based Costing ( Abc ) Essay
The first cost system of this part of this essay is activity based costing (ABC). Cooper and Kaplan
(1988) implemented ABC for taking care of issues of Traditional costing frameworks.
For allocating costs, Tradtional costing uses a single number like the machine hours or the direct
labour hour, also cost allocations are volume based. Comparing ABC with Traditional Costing
Systems, ABC include all activities for a product, to making it easier to more accurately measure and
allocate costs (Cooper, 1990; Cokins, Strat ton, Helbling, 1993).
It moves away from assigning costs to individual products but rather to activities or processes, which
allows for assigning a larger part of overhead costs to specific cost units (Cooper Kaplan, 1988;
Friedman Lyne, 1997).
Also important to know is that ABC define all the company activities as value adding or non value
adding activities (Cooper Kaplan, 2005). Non value added activities create waste, result in
postponement, add expenses to the items, or for which cost clients are not willing to pay. ABC helps
an association in discovering chances to streamline or lessen the expenses, or wipes out the whole
movement, particularly if there is no esteem added viewpoint to it (Drury, 2012).
Many have the believe that ABC is better than Traditional Costing because ABC say more about the
driven costs, and can split on any single activity and receives so more accurate cost details (Akyol,
Tuncel, Bayhan, 2007; Kee, 1995). As per this,

Carol Berkin Revolutionary Mothers Analysis
Carol Berkin s Revolutionary Mothers captures the spirits of women who affected, and were affected
by, the Revolutionary War. Berkin dives deep into the lives of women who played a vital role in the
war, but many that she examines are not the familiar patriot wives. She provides examples of all types
of women: patriot and loyalist, American and British, rich and poor, Indian and African American.
History books tend to romanticize the roles of women throughout wars, but Berkin presents heroines
in a more practical light. Berkin, professor of American history at Baruch College in New York,
believes that women s roles in the Revolutionary War were essential to Americans gaining their
independence. Berkin is the Presidential Professor of History at Baruch College. She is also a member

realizing it. Many people go visit New Orleans and doing so for a vacation without realizing how bad
the poverty in this city is. Once realized how dramatic the poverty level is in New Orleans, these
dismal areas are difficult to endure. It was August 29, 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit the city of
New Orleans. Unfortunately, the city and whole state was extremely unprepared for the catastrophic
impact. This was one uncontrollable factor to cause detrimental impacts to New Orleans. With that
being said, we have the issue of poverty at hand and it is an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Two term Mayor Marc Morial got high marks for cracking down on police corruption and for
burnishing the tourist business (alternet). Then there is Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco who was
stirred by the city and the state s out of control poverty and she urged ant poverty activists to come up
with a plan for poverty reduction (scribd). As stated by Rachel drew, there are primarily two obvious
solutions. In her article she mentions these solutions which consist of (1) providing means and
opportunities for people to improves their housing and neighborhood conditions by relocating to less
poverty concentrated areas and secondly to work within the community to interrupt the cycle of
abandonment and neglect by reinvesting in the community in ways that will improve the housing
stock and create jobs. (nhi.org) It comes down to the residents themselves and the people in charge
such as government, developers, and law enforcement to come together and make these changes. If
change doesn t start with the most important people then it will never get better. Efforts are being put
in by other people and organizations. They are trying their best to come up with solutions for this

The Market Crash of 1929 Essay
The Market Crash of 1929 Wall Street Crash, stock market crash in the United States in 1929. In 1927,
after having focused on investing abroad and with the US economy growing stronger, the financiers
based in New York s Wall Streetturned their attention to their home market. As they bought into the
stock market, so the prices of securities rose. As they bought more and more, prices went higher and
higher, and ordinary investors were attracted to invest by the apparently effortless boom that was
created. By the middle of 1929 it was estimated that about nine million Americans (out of a population
of 122 million) had capital ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the following day, Black Thursday , more than twice those numbers were traded. On Monday nine
million shares changed hands; $14 billion had been wiped off the value of shares in less than a week.
Then, on Black Tuesday , everything fell apart; the share price of many big companies including
General Electric and Woolworth collapsed. In that one day more than 16 million shares were traded
and another $10 billion was wiped off share values. What happened on Wall Street was mirrored on
other stock exchanges in the United States from Chicago to San Francisco.
It was a stark end to a decade that had been marked by optimism, high employment, and prosperity.
Not surprisingly, confidence in banks and bankers, the stock market and stockbrokers evaporated.
Bankruptciesand destitution were rife. Mortgageforeclosures increased. The middle classes retrenched.
Many lost their jobs; unemployment rose by nearly two million within half a year. Although when it
began some thought it was merely a welcome correction in the market, the crash marked the start of
the worldwide Great Depression and created the conditions for the New Deal introduced by Franklin
D. Roosevelt in 1933.
New Deal, name given to the peacetime domestic programme of United States president Franklin D.
Roosevelt, and especially to the innovative measures taken between 1933 and 1938 to counteract the

The Black Hole War By Leonard Susskind
What a great world we live in. We, not just human beings, but all living creatures, are mostly free to
learn and experience the world to our own desire. We have our own lives, our own experiences, that
define us as who we really are. However, so far as we know, human beings are the only species on
Earth that is able to engage in the pursuit of knowledge. With learning comes a great amount of trial
and error, that only results in moving closer to the truth of how the universe works. Trials and errors
are unavoidable when pursuing information. This is visible in every experiment, historical event,
invention, business, and the list goes on. With the information we obtain in our experiences, trials and
errors, we argue with our allies, competitors, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nuclear energy is a great example of this issue. Upon the discovery of nuclear energy and its
applications in the modern world, we as human beings came to a moral split in a road, where we could
either use it to produce a great amount of electricity, making electricity more accessible to the world,
or use it for weaponry, and risk ruining the world from our own aggression. Like many innovations,
we are able to use it to our own desires, and it brings to question how we as humans should use what
we obtain. The answer is clear, being to use it for energy production, but this is only true for a perfect
world. Another example is of standard metals. It can be used for equipment to harness, protect, and
explore the world. Or it can be used for violence, to fight one another, in an effort to be superior to one

Therefore, political, economic and social issues needed to be resolved to improve and reconstruct the Nation. It was the period in which the State and local governments in the South were restored, and the Southern states were unified to the rest of the States. This essay emphasizes the differences between congressional and presidential reconstruction. Also, it highlights the achievements and success of both. Although the presidential and congressional Reconstruction has some similarities, they also disagreed on many points and created a conflict between each other. Nevertheless by early 1867, the new Congress passed the Reconstruction Act of 1867 over President Johnson s veto. The Congressional Reconstruction Plan dramatically changed politics in the South. The reconstruction was a process of reformation that affected the whole nation. There were three main Reconstruction plans. Two were presidential The Lincoln and Johnson s Plan. Meanwhile, one was Congressional. Lincoln started a Reconstruction plan during the Civil War. To summarize, he implemented before his death, the Emancipation Proclamation, the 10% Plan and he tried to extend suffrage. But his Plan failed. In this short chapter book Frog and Toad are best friends who enjoy different adventures together. It is a wonderful example of friendship and loyalty. For this particular lesson students were analyzing their character traits. As I was observing and participating in discussions around the classroom, I realized that many of the students were wondering about the difference between a frog and toad and wondering if the characters in the book reflected these differences. These insights made me realize that we should shift the focus and research these differences. I contacted the librarian and he suggested I read them All About Frogs by Jim Arnosky. Thus I choose this book as my expository example. This book provided a wealth of information and vivid illustrations about different types of frogs and toads. Grandzol, Perlis, and Draina were attempting to determine if participating in collegiate athletics was associated with leadership development. The authors looked at five leadership practices that were analyzed through the use of the Student Leadership Practice Inventory developed by James Kouzes and Barry Posner. The author s research question was Are leadership practices of (A) model the way, (B) inspire a shared vision, (C) challenge the process, (D) enable others to act, and (E) Encouraging the heart related to athletic participation and leadership position? The title of the journal questions the current position Charles Babbage is known for, the father of computing. Wilkes considers Babbage a great uncle of computing science instead of the father and gives further details as in to why. The author doesn t only criticize Babbage s work but also informs the readers on how they operate and what their function is. According to the text, Babbage s first difference engine was not a very good idea (Wilkes 15). The difference engine only functioned to do two different tasks which are to compute and tabulate polynomials. This basically states that the difference engine could compute mathematical tables, but further reading attacks this claim. In order for the difference engine to be able to compute, Babbage had to do a great amount of paper and pencil computation in order to calculate the coefficients to be set on the engine (Wilkes 15). As a result, one can criticize that the difference engine doesn t exactly work out mathematical tables on its own without the help of the conductor. One could argue that, because of the time period, the difference computer wasn t made to reduce human labor but to actually mechanize computations. The author also elaborates onto the rough years Babbage had on his creations towards his engine. Supply And Demand Of Gasoline Gasoline is produced by a distillation process where crude oil is heated and fumes are captured and converted into many products such as kerosene, jet fuel, and gasoline to name a few. Therefore the price of crude oil, which is extracted from oil wells beneath the earths surface, is a major factor in gas prices. The five leading oil producing countries and their approximate shares of the world supply of oil are: Soviet Union 21%, Saudi Arabia 17%, The United States 15%, Venezuela 4%, and Mexico 4%. These five countries made up 61 % of the worlds oil production back in 1980 and an organization called O.P.E.C. controls approximately four fifths of the worlds oil reserves in the non communist world. Factors effect to oil price Price is depended on supply and demand. There are two different laws: The Law of Demand and the Law of Supply. The Law of Demand is a relationship, which involves price and quantity. It states that as the price of a product goes up (oil goes up), the quantity of the product (oil) will go down; therefore, this is a strong relationship between price and quantity. The Law of Supply, however, is the direct relationship between price and the quantity in which the seller produces. So as price goes up, the quantity the seller will produce will go up because the price allows for the seller to produce more output. Demand shifts are caused by economic growths. Stepping into the 21st century, those words have not been faithfully lived up to, evident through the numerous counts of divorces in society. Divorce can be defined as the legal dissolution of a marriage by a court order and in this generation, is seen as the norm. A level B qualification is very similar to the level S qualification in that it requires a license or certification that required appropriate training and experience in the ethical and knowledgeable use of psychological tests, or a degree in psychology, counseling, or a related field, in addition to having completed coursework in test interpretation, psychometrics, measurement theory, and educational statistics with a passing grade (NEO PI R™, 2012). This helps to ensure that the test is only handled by individuals who have the necessary knowledge to interpret the test without misinterpretation, which could have negative outcomes. The NEO PI R is self administered, which means individuals who do not have formal training in clinical psychology, personality or related fields can administer and score the instruments (Costa McCrae, 1992). • 23. A Statistical Test Essay We live in a scientific world were the results of published research findings can dictate our very existence. Yet, there is an increasing body of evidence that suggest that most publish research findings are false (Ioannidis, 2005 page 0696). How can this be true? Part1: According to Ioannidis (2005), the pre study probability of a relationship being true is R/ (R + 1). Where R is the ratio of the number of true relationships to no relationships among those tested in the field (page 0696). The Null Hypothesis (Ho) is what you want to disprove, what you want to prove to be not true. The Alternative hypothesis (HA) on the other hand is what you want to prove to be true. Thus, in scientific research we are looking to prove that relationships are true or to prove that they are not true. The power of a statistical test is defined as the ability of the test to lead to a conclusion to accept the HA when in fact, the HA is true (Wirtz, 2013). Also, since the probability of a statistical study depends on the prior probability, statistical power, and the level of the observed P value, it means that the probability of a study finding a true relationship is the power of 1 β (one type two error (Ioannidis, 2005 page 0696). Also, type 1 error is the probability of incorrectly rejecting a null hypothesis that should not be rejected (Wirtz, 2013). Factors that negatively affect the probability of true relationships are small studies, smaller effect sizes, in a scientific field, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Edward Norton plays the lead, but Edward s Norton s character goes unnamed throughout the entire film; being credited only as The Narrator. As the narrator and a main character, Norton s character is aware that he is in the movie for the majority of the film, but also takes part in the overall storyline. He does that by breaking the fourth wall and interacting with the audience. The entire film is very fast paced and complex, with each scene getting right to the point. There are numerous plots within Fight Club, aside from the actual fighting. The characters in Fight Club are morally ambiguous. Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) has no sense of moral compass. He is introduced as a projectionist, who sneaks pornography into films. He is also a thief, who steals human fat from the liposuction clinic to make soap with. Much of Elizabeth s latter rule was left out, instead the film opted to tell the story behind her rise to power, and he she eventually gained a foothold on her power, securing herself as The Virgin Queen of England. Other things that were left out were Elizabeth s formative years as a child, although both of these really had little significance or bearing on the story that was being told in this film. The job of a prosecutor is to find justice, but some prosecutors just want to get a conviction every time. Cooper and Kaplan (1988) implemented ABC for taking care of issues of Traditional costing frameworks. For allocating costs, Tradtional costing uses a single number like the machine hours or the direct labour hour, also cost allocations are volume based. Comparing ABC with Traditional Costing Systems, ABC include all activities for a product, to making it easier to more accurately measure and allocate costs (Cooper, 1990; Cokins, Strat ton, Helbling, 1993). It moves away from assigning costs to individual products but rather to activities or processes, which allows for assigning a larger part of overhead costs to specific cost units (Cooper Kaplan, 1988; Friedman Lyne, 1997).
