Analyse The Importance Of Communication In Groups
In group one, the main component that seems to be working the best for everyone is our
communication method. We developed a group message, primarily because texting is easily accessible
for all four of us and definitely a common form of communication we are all used to. Moreover,
Google Docs is also working well, I will share documents and open access for everyone to edit. This
seems to work efficiently because we are all extremely busy and can work on the documents on our
own time or at the scheduled meeting time. Moreover, everyone in the member has open access to
every document and can express their own thoughts regarding the writing. So far in our group there
has not been a significant problem which has emerged. Thus far, everyone has completed

During the first ten years of the reform period (1978 1988), China s GDP grew at an average rate of
around 10% per annum and its share of world trade doubled during the decade of the 1980s as well.
From the period of the early 1980s to late 1990s, contracted FDI inflow to China grew from about
US$1.5 billion a year to more than US$40 billion a year in 1999. The rate of economic growth was
even higher in the fist half of the 1990s. Since 1993, for example, the success in attracting foreign
investment made China become the second largest recipient of FDI in the world and the contracted
FDI increased to a peak of US$111 bn in that year. China was ranked the ninth largest trading nation,
by 1999. At the same year, the development of a flourishing private sector which the private firms
accounted for around 38% of services output and about 20% of industrial output. This gives the
prosperity rising, especially in the costal region.
3. The impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) in China
FDI is an important element in China s reform and economic growth, though it is not easy to say the
relationship between FDI inflow and the growth empirically. It is widely believed FDI not only brings
technological progress, but also having impact on industrial organization, technology transfers and the
diffusion of knowledge. It influences on the market structure and competition in host economies as
well. In China, there is

Conformity Experiment
Conformity is a situation of changing one s behavior in order to match the actions of the society
around the person. The social influence cause people to agree or even behave like the majority of the
people in the specific group so that the group can perceive them as normal. Solomon Asch (1956) was
interested to know the act of people in conformity pressure. Because of that, he created an experiment
to investigate the process by asking college students in a group of eight to match the lengths of
different lines. The experiment shows that 95% of the students correctly match 12 lines without
pressure of group. Ash repeats the experiment by changing the situation. The students now need to

Ethical Altruiism
Families that make under $39,000 a year donate more than the wealthy to charities. These individuals
are the 90% that donate while the other 10% come from rich people and wealthy foundations
(Harwood). As people are accumulating more wealth, they are being set apart from others, and they
don t see other people s needs and struggles. When a person s empathy is aroused, they will be more
likely to help altruistically (Reis). So, if the wealthy aren t seeing the struggles of others, they can t
feel empathy and will be less likely to donate. Donating money is one of the many ways someone can
help altruistically. True altruism will not benefit one personally and some examples of that are the
rescuers of Jews, volunteers, and donors. A group of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Southern Italy Research Paper
Italy, the place where thousands of people go to get away from their normal lives, has been facing
many struggles of its own. The ancient buildings, rivers, and popular attractions make Italy look like a
perfect, easy living society. Yet, Italy has lots of problems, from governmental money issues to the
everyday lives of people. Italy s economy is continuing to get worse, causing the European and other
country s people to worry.
There are many THINGS that later result in a bad economy. Employment is a cause Italy has been

Hip Fractures And The Most Serious Clinical Consequence Of...
Background
Osteoporosis, millions of people suffered worldwide, is a condition where the amount of bone is
declined but its elements remain unchanged, leading to bone fragility and fractures (Garrow, James
and Ralph, 1999). Associated with morbidity and mortality (Holt et al., 2008), hip fractures are
recognized as the most serious clinical consequence of osteoporosis, resulting in an increased
estimated incidence from 1.26 million in 1990 to 2.6 and 4.5 million by the year of 2025 and 2050,
respectively (Gullberg, Johnell and Kanis, 1997). In Europe, the direct expenditure of osteoporotic

However, several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) proved no evidence between CaD and risk of
hip fracture (Smith et al., 2007; Law et al., 2006), suggesting that the amount recommended above
could not meet the needs for the elderly.
Due to prevalence in postmenopausal women and controversy mentioned above, this critical review
focuses on proving relationship between different level of CaD intake and prevention of hip fracture
via RCTs studies.
Search strategy
Pubmed and Web of Science were used in searching relevant articles with the terms calcium and/or
vitamin D , in conjunction with hip fracture . Titles and abstracts were read to select articles included
relationship between dietary and hip fracture. Non relevant articles such as education and management
of post surgery were discarded. Relevant articles should meet following criteria: a) English, b)
postmenopausal women, c) RCT, d) free of osteoporosis. Most of the chosen articles were only
focused on postmenopausal women, whilst the rest few ones focused on both gender.
Review
Fourteen studies were critically reviewed in order to check whether joint or independent effect of
calcium and vitamin D on hip fracture risk or bone mineral density as a result of effect on prevention
of hip fracture.
Calcium alone and bone density at the hip
Five RCTs studies mainly focused on the relationship between calcium and bone

Augusto Pinochet Research Paper
The 1950 1960s brought about the spread of worldwide marxism, while simultaneously prompting
extremist anti communist practices, particularly in the United States. Though the Cold War centered
around the northern hemisphere, South America was not immune to the marxist ideology and political
atmosphere. However, until the late 1960 s Chile remained comparatively stable to neighboring
countries. Nevertheless, the election of Socialist Salvador Allende Gossens in 1970 brought severe
political unrest. The first election of an openly marxist leader alarmed many Americans and weakened
ties between the two countries. Allende s policies to limit inflation by freezing prices and raising
income backfired and succeeded only in angering the U.S. as Chilean ... Show more content on

The Failure of the Great Leap Forward
The Great Leap Forward was Mao s new economic plan, which took place in China in 1958. The idea
of the Great Leap Forward was the rapid growth of agricultural and industrial production. It focused
on improving the productivity of all Chinese workers by investing in human development and labour
intensive technology. Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials believed it would bring about
economic and technical development in great leaps rather than at a gradual pace. By using China s
advantage of manpower, Mao expected China to equal or exceed the industrial output of Great Britain
and the United States. Virtually every Chinese citizen took part in the Great Leap Forward, from the
lowliest peasant to the highest ranking CCP members. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Government spending on heavy industry grew in 1958 to represent 56 percent of state capital
investment, an increase from 38 percent in 1956. The backyard steel production plan resulted in entire
forests being burned to fuel the smelters that melt metal 24 hours a day, which left the land open to
erosion. Dense cropping and deep ploughing stripped the farmland and left if vulnerable as well.
When the autumn of 1958 came, many areas had a bumper crop because the soil was not yet
exhausted. This played a role in crop failures and eventually famine. With so much emphasis on steel
output as well as on development of other small industries and building projects, people were pulled
away from agriculture. Local leaders competed with one another to see who could create the most
activity. In the rush to recruit labor, agricultural tasks were neglected, sometimes leaving the grain
harvest to rot in the fields. Crop production began to falter. But Mao was adamant about increasing
agricultural output, and communes were expected to meet high quotas or face punishment. In the
frenzy of the competition, the CCP officers and many peasants exaggerated their harvests to their
superiors in Beijing. There were claims that gigantic vegetables cabbages, cucumbers, tomatoes, and
millions of pounds of potatoes and huge volumes of grain had been produced. Because of the falsely
exaggerated harvest, much of the grain was diverted from rural to urban areas. It was kept in storage

Cognitive Dissonance Paper
Introduction
The words Cognitive Dissonance were fascinatingly interesting; therefore more research went into the
origin of these two words. Both words are Middle English, which was the English in use from 12th to
15th centuries and both used in the 15th century [ (Merriam Webster, 2011) ]. Cognitive is an adjective
meaning, there is physical activity involving the mind; be it: thinking, reasoning or remembering.
Dissonance is a noun meaning, when there is a tug of war between one s actions and one s mind [
(Merriam Webster, 2011) ].This paper will explore that tug of war of the mind (conscious) and actions
(subconscious) and how one can and will justify behavior that a direct dissension from his or her

and work through her depression and grief over her lost relationship she called in sick even though she

Explanation
Cognitive Dissonance Theory (delete if there are no others)
According to Leon Festinger (1957), Dissonance and consonance are relations among cognitions that
is, among opinions, beliefs, knowledge of the environment, and knowledge of one s own actions and
feelings. Two opinions, or beliefs, or items of knowledge are dissonant with each other if they do not
fit together (p. 25). When the cognitions are of opposite actions or feelings, they are dissonant.
Cognitive dissonance can perpetuate a conflict and in Alice s situation, it did. Alice, by definition, is
an honest, hardworking adult with morals and values. However, she encountered a personal situation
with her boyfriend that caused her to have dissonant cognitions. She knew it was wrong to call her
employer and inform them she was ill and unable to go to work. Calling her employer and lying about
her state of health caused discomfort (that is what dissonance does) and to justify lying, she tries to
convince herself she did the right thing. This justification comes

Why Plea Bargains Should Be Taken To Trial
When it comes to trials there is a great deal of uncertainty. There is no way to predict what a jury or
judge will decide. A case that a lawyer thought would go one way could completely turn and do the
opposite. This leads to the question of whether a case should be taken to trial or not. It is because of
this that plea bargaining is often put to use. Plea bargaining is beneficial to the prosecutor as well as
the defense attorney and the defendant. Plea bargains are based upon the mutual interest of all parties
involved and they can occur for a variety of reasons. One reason a plea bargain may occur is because a
prosecutors evidence is not as strong as they would like. Prosecutors want their cases to be as strong
as possible so that they can expect a win. If they are unsure of what the outcome may be, they prefer
to find a way to avoid going to trial. Plea bargains offer prosecutors a speedy conviction without
committing to the necessities of a trial. However, this does not only help the prosecutor. The accused
may find reduced charges, reduced defense costs, and sometimes even a shorter sentence than
originally planned. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Perhaps the prosecutor knows that he will win the case. If he/she has enough evidence to convict the
defendant it may be that the defense attorney suggests that a plea bargain would be best for his/her
client. Sometimes plea bargains are offered when the defendant releases information about other
crimes they are aware of. In return, they get the possibility of reduced charges that I mentioned earlier.
Once again, the benefits of plea bargains are mutual to everyone involved. While there may be many
different reasons as to why a plea bargain may occur, these are just a few

Being A Bartender Research Paper
Bartending is a highly competitive career between young and old adults. Many college student rely on
being a bartender as their main source of income. In many ways, some might say I have the perfect
job. I succeed to work in an upbeat atmosphere, meet new people, and sample some treasured spirits.
Most of the time you can find me laughing with guests while mixing their favorite cocktails on the
menu. I play host to their party and gatekeeper to their alcohol. Some will try to make friends with me
in hopes of free drinks in the future. Although this may sound like the perfect career there are some
disadvantages. Before quitting your day job, here are a few points to consider. Some of the
disadvantages are working late hours, dealing with a stressful work environment, and inconsistent pay.
To begin, being a bartender will have you putting in the late night work hours. Being a night owl is an
understatement in this career. Many bars close in the early morning, and leave the bartender to clean

Hegel And Kant On The Ontological Argument Essay
Hegel and Kant on the Ontological Argument
ABSTRACT: I intend to present Kant s refutation of the ontological argument as confronted by Hegel
s critique of Kant s refutation. The ontological argument can be exposed in a syllogistic way:
everything I conceive as belonging clearly and distinctly to the nature or essence of something can be
asserted as true of something. I perceive clearly and distinctly that existence belongs to the nature or
essence of a perfect being; therefore, existence can be stated as true of a supremely perfect being, that
is, perfect being exists. I intend to argue that Kant criticizes both the major and minor premises. To the
major premise, he objects that there is an unqualified passage from the logical to the ... Show more

Premise 2 holds the central idea of the ontological argument: it implies that existence is a property or
quality, and as such should take part of the essence of a supremely perfect being. Such conception
could be expressed in the following derived argument:
1) All perfections belong clearly and distinctly to the essence of a supremely perfect being;
2) Existence is a perfection therefore, existence belongs to the essence of a supremely perfect being
II. Kant s Refutation of the Ontological Argument
Kant s criticism aims at both premises of the main argument. To the major premise, he objects that
there is an unjustified passage from the logical to the ontological level: But the unconditioned
necessity of judgments is not the same as an absolute necessity of things. The absolute necessity of the
judgments is only a conditioned necessity of the thing, or of the predicate in the judgment (KrV, B621)
In other words, to conceive that S is P doesn t imply the necessary existence of S. Such proposition
requires not the absolute necessity of something but a

Unprofessionalism In The Workplace Essay
Unprofessionalism in the workplace is a highly controversial topic that is debated by numerous of
individuals. Mainly, because of the different backgrounds, religion, race, and up brings that we same
as members of the United States. Many businesses consider dreadlocks, which are ropelike strands of
hair formed by matting or braiding hair, unprofessional. Why is that woman wearing a burka, niqab,

manager that breaks their moral laws? We all can agree that unprofessionalism or professionalism falls
under these categorizes dress and grooming, employee interaction, harassment, workplace conduct,

what you can and cannot wear, how you hair should or should not be, along with many other things.
Therefore, which company is right or wrong? Becoming more informed on the most unprofessional

this sentiment of love establishes their hegemony and makes them the dominant sex when in reality
they are the sex that ought to obey .

Gel electrophoresis is a routine laboratory procedure in biochemical studies that takes advantage of a
protein s amphoteric nature to determine its molecular weight and charge by running the sample
through a gel matrix under the influence of an electrically charged field. A popular example of gel
electrophoresis is Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide electrophoresis or SDS PAGE which has
been used in this experiment to supposedly determine albumin and casein s molecular weights
respectively. The system used in gel electrophoresis consists of 3 major parts: a stationary phase, a
mobile phase) and an electrical power supply.
In SDS PAGE the polyacrylamide gel serves as the stationary phase, the buffer (Tris HCl in this case)

On the other hand, the Tris HCl buffer and deionized water provides the system its shape since the
polyacrylamide complex is just a thin film of interlocking polymer fibers without any liquid to trap
within.
Polyacrylamide gels are usually preferred over other gel types such as agarose in protein
electrophoresis because of various benefits such as its ability to be cast in various pore sizes which
provides options for the researchers who observe protein samples with various Kda s depending on
how separated they aim the bands to be or how well the sample is sieved. It is also preferred because
of its charge neutrality upon setting as it does not interfere with the electrophoresis which is highly
reliant on the sample and the surrounding s charges within the system. Lastly, the gel itself is colorless
and protein stains do not adhere to the gel so there will be minimal problems with unnecessary stains
that aren t from the staining solution.
APS and TEMED was used to initiate the binding of acrylamide to bisacrylamide via a vinyl addition
reaction where TEMED catalyzes the decomposition of APS into free sulfide molecules which then
initiates the formation of the polyacrylamide complex.

Archaeology and Ethics

There are many similarities in the ethical statements/codes of the SAA, SHA, AIA, and RPA. The ones
that pertain to this case are as follows: it is the responsibility of archaeologists to work for the long
term conservation and protection of the archaeological record (SAA 1, AIA 1, RPA 1.1 e). The buying
and selling of objects out of archaeological context is contributing to the destruction of the
archaeological record around the world, and these items should not be traded, sold, bought, or bartered
as commercial goods (SAA 3, SHA 6, AIA 2, RPA 1.2 e). Within reasonable time, the knowledge

Also they are to be careful to preserve and protect the archaeological site when publishing and
distributing information about their nature and location (SAA6 and SHA3).
Finally, the last ethical dilemma to be discussed is the importance of archaeologists to inform the
proper authorities when illegal trading, or selling, of artifacts is discovered. In the text it states, The
two project directors reply that they will not purchase the pots themselves, nor will they guarantee that
authorities will not be notified. They do, however, loan the men some gasoline and a video camera for
a day, to record the pots and their location. It is questionable that the two directors would only imply
that they could not promise the authorities would not be notified. It is their duty to do so, according to
the statements and ethical codes of many archaeological organizations. They also give the local
employees gasoline and a video camera for a day leads the reader to believe that they are okay with
this sort of behavior and have no intention of notifying the proper authorities. It also says that because
of the video camera, many of the villagers now know where the cave is, and will likely know what
ends up happening to the pots. Because the villagers now know where the cave is, it is even more
important that the authorities are notified so that similar situations do not arise with villagers
scavenging the cave and finding more

Kristen s Cookie Company is a good example where the success or failure of the company depends
directly on the process planning adopted by the company, i.e., the company can maximize its
productivity by utilizing its resources effectively. One major aspect of process analysis is to identify
the major bottlenecks in the process and trying to mitigate their effects with least possible level of
costs and resources. The following flowchart shows the overall process adopted by the company:

So, if labor cost is Rs. 20 per hour, we get the following costs distribution:
Order size Labor Time Cost Cost per Dozen
1 dozen 12 Rs. 4.00 Rs. 4.00
2 dozen 17 Rs. 5.66 Rs. 2.83 Thus, cost per dozen of labor is decreasing. This can be applied to orders
of more than two dozens as well. Hence, Kristen s Cookie Company can give discounts to customers
giving orders of more than one dozen because of the economies of scale as shown above.
Material Requirements:
The processor is required for mixing the ingredients for the cookies and is idle for most of the time.
The oven required for the purpose of baking is the major bottleneck and there is no requirement for
more than one processor. Hence, spending money on more than one processor would not be advisable
for Kristen s Cookie Company.
The baking trays are required for three activities, namely, filling it and keeping it ready for baking,
baking it in the oven, and cooling it after baking is done. Since the baking and cooling processes will
be going on for at most one tray at a given time and the mixing process gets material ready for at most
three trays of one dozen each, five trays would be sufficient, though, even three trays would serve the
purpose if mixing and filling activities are done properly. Hence, it is advisable for Kristen s Cookie
Company to go for at least three baking trays to maximize its productivity.
Cost Benefit Analysis:

Picasso Vs Velazquez
ZOOM
Velazquez and Picasso painted many of the same things. They have similarities as Picasso s are simply
new renditions of the original ones that were made by Velazquez. They also have differences because
Picasso had a very different art style from Velazquez. They had many paintings that were remade by
picasso years after to bring back the art of Velazquez the royal painter. That was just kind of Picasso s
style.Their paintings had a lot of differences. For example Velazquez painted many people helping out
the young princess. Picasso only had a one maid helping her with tasks. Velazquez has a very realistic
rendition while Picasso s is more abstract. Velazquez s looks almost like it was a picture of the event
taking place but Picasso s is very polygonal. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The two of them are of the same event taking place. They are also both supposed to get the same
thought across in their respective styles of doing so. Both paintings are named exactly the same thing.
Although their specialties may be different both artists painted this painting at their best with their
special strategies.I think that Velazquez was just trying to do his job and portray the real scene of
maids helping the princess with some tasks as he was supposed to. I think that Picasso was trying to
portray the same thing that Velazquez was trying to portray and he just wanted to put his own classic
abstract spin on the realistic painting by painting it in the style of his own paintings.. I think that
Velazquez decided that he was going to make this painting because it was his job and he liked to paint
portrayals of certain events happening with the royal family in their life. he just enjoyed his job it
seems and so he painted as many things of them as he possibly do. I think that Picasso made it because
part of what he does is repaint old paintings from past painters. He just liked to take something that
was a realistic painting and put his classic abstract spin on them to make his

The Noh Theater
Imagine two mimes wearing masks and colorful robes, the image would not be too terribly far off
from a common Noh play. Originating in Japan during the fourteenth century, the Noh Theatre uses
few actors wearing colorful clothing and depictive masks to perform beautiful plays pertaining to the
afterlife. Due to the dark times it came from and the sad way it was performed, Noh Theatre is one of
the most dramatic of its time. O Donnell states the origins of Noh start in the Muromachi period of
Japan, which began in 1338 when Takauji overthrew Go Daigo as shogun, the ruler of Japan. This
period lasted from 1338 1573 and is known for its military conflicts and intrigue. During the first 50
years of this period the north and south were segregated, until the south agreed under the rule of a
single shogun. In those 50 years multiple earthquakes struck Japan, draught and famine, and two new
diseases swept the nation killing thousands. In 1370 Yoshimitsu had taken the title of shogun,
introducing trade with China and forming new social classes. The prosperity did not last long as the
power struggle for shogun began the Onin War in 1467. After its resolution smaller battles continued
between those who wanted power and money, as many shoguns spent time for their own good instead
of governing their people (O Donnell). Using two types of plays, sarugaku, which was mimicry, and
kagura, religious theatre; it is from these dark times that Kannami and his son Zeami created Noh

Taking a Look at Shyness
Have you felt awkward, worried or even tense during social encounters? Do you feel these emotions
around people you are unfamiliar with? If so, you have probably encountered what it feels like to be
shy. Some will occasionally feel shy and others may be severely shy when interacting with others, in
which they can feel themselves start to blush, sweat, and have an upset stomach. The person may also
begin to feel a sense of negativity about them or even become withdrawn from interacting with others
( American Psychological Association ). Interacting with others on a day to day basis is life, and the
shyer the person is, the more inhibited and reluctant they are to approach others. Shyness can be
defined as the discomfort or inhibition in situations that can interfere with pursuing a person s
interpersonal or professional goals. The feeling of shyness can be generated by a wide variety of cues
such as one on one opposite sex interactions, intimacy, unfamiliarity of others, and having to take
individual action in groups (Henderson Zimbardo, 2008). Reacting to new and unfamiliar situations
can bring out shy feelings, a new job, and public speaking at an assembly or for a class, dating
someone new or the first day of school are situations in which a person could feel shy. The greater the
feeling of not knowing how to react or what to say will result in a greater feeling of shyness. Those
who know what to expect in situations and are sure of what to say are less likely to feel

Vaccine Effectiveness Of The Shingles Vaccine Essay
The shingles vaccine has been available in the United States since 2006 and is an effective method in
preventing individuals, especially those aged 60 years or older, from developing a herpes zoster
infection1. However, even though immunization is a relatively easy prevention method, many older
adults are not receiving the shingles vaccine. Though some individuals may choose to not be
vaccinated for personal or religious reasons, other barriers do exist. Limited physician education of the
national recommendations and vaccine effectiveness has resulted in less than 25% of eligible older
adults receiving the herpes zoster vaccine as of 20152. Lack of proper storage capabilities has also
limited many clinics from carrying the vaccine. The shingles vaccine must be stored frozen and
administered within thirty minutes, which is not always feasible for primary care or community based
clinics3. Luckily, public health professionals have been focusing on shingles vaccination among older
adults and some interventions have emerged with the goal to increase its uptake. One intervention
strategy in particular aims to improve immunization rates by addressing lack of education and support.
This program team utilized a team approach combined with educational opportunities, focusing
specifically on primary care settings4. Gannon, et. al. (2012) explored this team approach in their
study involving 17 primary care practices who were recruited from the ACP quality and practice

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). (aids.gov) AIDS is an incurable progressive disease that
causes gradual destruction of CD4 T cells by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). (Diseases,
pg. 431) A healthy adult has a CD4 T cell count of 1,000 or more but a person suffering from HIV
could have a count lower than 200. CD4 T cells are crucial to the immune system; without them the
immune system would not have the ability to fight off infections. One of the disquieting facts about
AIDS is that the infected person may be asymptomatic for years. If the infected person does begin to
experience signs and symptoms, their initial complaints are usually fever, rigors, arthralgia (joint
pain), myalgia (muscle pain), maculopapular rash, urticaria (hives), abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.
(Diseases, pg. 432) Fatigue, anorexia, weight loss, night sweats, mental deterioration, persistent
cough, visual disturbances, intestinal inflammation, thick, white crust covering the inside of the

come along with AIDS. (Understanding and Caring for Human Diseases, pg. 346 350) Although there

We developed a group message, primarily because texting is easily accessible for all four of us and definitely a common form of communication we are all used to. Moreover, Google Docs is also working well, I will share documents and open access for everyone to edit. This seems to work efficiently because we are all extremely busy and can work on the documents on our own time or at the scheduled meeting time. Moreover, everyone in the member has open access to every document and can express their own thoughts regarding the writing. During the first ten years of the reform period (1978 1988), China s GDP grew at an average rate of around 10% per annum and its share of world trade doubled during the decade of the 1980s as well. From the period of the early 1980s to late 1990s, contracted FDI inflow to China grew from about US$1.5 billion a year to more than US$40 billion a year in 1999. The rate of economic growth was even higher in the fist half of the 1990s. Since 1993, for example, the success in attracting foreign investment made China become the second largest recipient of FDI in the world and the contracted FDI increased to a peak of US$111 bn in that year. China was ranked the ninth largest trading nation, by 1999. The social influence cause people to agree or even behave like the majority of the people in the specific group so that the group can perceive them as normal. Solomon Asch (1956) was interested to know the act of people in conformity pressure. Because of that, he created an experiment to investigate the process by asking college students in a group of eight to match the lengths of different lines. The experiment shows that 95% of the students correctly match 12 lines without pressure of group. Ash repeats the experiment by changing the situation. These individuals are the 90% that donate while the other 10% come from rich people and wealthy foundations (Harwood). As people are accumulating more wealth, they are being set apart from others, and they don t see other people s needs and struggles. When a person s empathy is aroused, they will be more likely to help altruistically (Reis). So, if the wealthy aren t seeing the struggles of others, they can t feel empathy and will be less likely to donate. Donating money is one of the many ways someone can help altruistically. True altruism will not benefit one personally and some examples of that are the rescuers of Jews, volunteers, and donors. A group of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, until the late 1960 s Chile remained comparatively stable to neighboring countries. Nevertheless, the election of Socialist Salvador Allende Gossens in 1970 brought severe political unrest. • 10. The Failure of the Great Leap Forward The Great Leap Forward was Mao s new economic plan, which took place in China in 1958. The idea of the Great Leap Forward was the rapid growth of agricultural and industrial production. It focused on improving the productivity of all Chinese workers by investing in human development and labour intensive technology. Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials believed it would bring about economic and technical development in great leaps rather than at a gradual pace. Government spending on heavy industry grew in 1958 to represent 56 percent of state capital investment, an increase from 38 percent in 1956. The backyard steel production plan resulted in entire forests being burned to fuel the smelters that melt metal 24 hours a day, which left the land open to erosion. Dense cropping and deep ploughing stripped the farmland and left if vulnerable as well. When the autumn of 1958 came, many areas had a bumper crop because the soil was not yet exhausted. This played a role in crop failures and eventually famine. With so much emphasis on steel output as well as on development of other small industries and building projects, people were pulled away from agriculture. Local leaders competed with one another to see who could create the most activity. In the rush to recruit labor, agricultural tasks were neglected, sometimes leaving the grain harvest to rot in the fields. Crop production began to falter. But Mao was adamant about increasing agricultural output, and communes were expected to meet high quotas or face punishment. In the frenzy of the competition, the CCP officers and many peasants exaggerated their harvests to their superiors in Beijing. There were claims that gigantic vegetables cabbages, cucumbers, tomatoes, and millions of pounds of potatoes and huge volumes of grain had been produced. Both words are Middle English, which was the English in use from 12th to 15th centuries and both used in the 15th century [ (Merriam Webster, 2011) ]. Cognitive is an adjective meaning, there is physical activity involving the mind; be it: thinking, reasoning or remembering. Dissonance is a noun meaning, when there is a tug of war between one s actions and one s mind [ (Merriam Webster, 2011) ].This paper will explore that tug of war of the mind (conscious) and actions (subconscious) and how one can and will justify behavior that a direct dissension from his or her values, beliefs, attitudes and ... Explanation Cognitive Dissonance Theory (delete if there are no others) According to Leon Festinger (1957), Dissonance and consonance are relations among cognitions that is, among opinions, beliefs, knowledge of the environment, and knowledge of one s own actions and feelings. Two opinions, or beliefs, or items of knowledge are dissonant with each other if they do not fit together (p. 25). When the cognitions are of opposite actions or feelings, they are dissonant. Cognitive dissonance can perpetuate a conflict and in Alice s situation, it did. Alice, by definition, is an honest, hardworking adult with morals and values. However, she encountered a personal situation with her boyfriend that caused her to have dissonant cognitions. She knew it was wrong to call her employer and inform them she was ill and unable to go to work. • 12. Why Plea Bargains Should Be Taken To Trial When it comes to trials there is a great deal of uncertainty. There is no way to predict what a jury or judge will decide. A case that a lawyer thought would go one way could completely turn and do the opposite. This leads to the question of whether a case should be taken to trial or not. It is because of this that plea bargaining is often put to use. Plea bargaining is beneficial to the prosecutor as well as the defense attorney and the defendant. Plea bargains are based upon the mutual interest of all parties involved and they can occur for a variety of reasons. One reason a plea bargain may occur is because a prosecutors evidence is not as strong as they would like. Prosecutors want their cases to be as strong as possible so that they can expect a win. If they are unsure of what the outcome may be, they prefer to find a way to avoid going to trial. Plea bargains offer prosecutors a speedy conviction without committing to the necessities of a trial. However, this does not only help the prosecutor. The accused may find reduced charges, reduced defense costs, and sometimes even a shorter sentence than originally planned. ... Sometimes plea bargains are offered when the defendant releases information about other crimes they are aware of. In return, they get the possibility of reduced charges that I mentioned earlier. Once again, the benefits of plea bargains are mutual to everyone involved. While there may be many different reasons as to why a plea bargain may occur, these are just a few ... Before quitting your day job, here are a few points to consider. Some of the disadvantages are working late hours, dealing with a stressful work environment, and inconsistent pay. To begin, being a bartender will have you putting in the late night work hours. Being a night owl is an understatement in this career. Hegel And Kant On The Ontological Argument Essay Hegel and Kant on the Ontological Argument ABSTRACT: I intend to present Kant s refutation of the ontological argument as confronted by Hegel s critique of Kant s refutation. The ontological argument can be exposed in a syllogistic way: everything I conceive as belonging clearly and distinctly to the nature or essence of something can be asserted as true of something. I perceive clearly and distinctly that existence belongs to the nature or essence of a perfect being; therefore, existence can be stated as true of a supremely perfect being, that is, perfect being exists. Premise 2 holds the central idea of the ontological argument: it implies that existence is a property or quality, and as such should take part of the essence of a supremely perfect being. Kant s Refutation of the Ontological Argument Kant s criticism aims at both premises of the main argument. To the major premise, he objects that there is an unjustified passage from the logical to the ontological level: But the unconditioned necessity of judgments is not the same as an absolute necessity of things. The absolute necessity of the judgments is only a conditioned necessity of the thing, or of the predicate in the judgment (KrV, B621) In other words, to conceive that S is P doesn t imply the necessary existence of S. In the text it states, The two project directors reply that they will not purchase the pots themselves, nor will they guarantee that authorities will not be notified. They do, however, loan the men some gasoline and a video camera for a day, to record the pots and their location. It also says that because of the video camera, many of the villagers now know where the cave is, and will likely know what ends up happening to the pots. Vaccine Effectiveness Of The Shingles Vaccine Essay The shingles vaccine has been available in the United States since 2006 and is an effective method in preventing individuals, especially those aged 60 years or older, from developing a herpes zoster infection1. However, even though immunization is a relatively easy prevention method, many older adults are not receiving the shingles vaccine. Though some individuals may choose to not be vaccinated for personal or religious reasons, other barriers do exist. Limited physician education of the national recommendations and vaccine effectiveness has resulted in less than 25% of eligible older adults receiving the herpes zoster vaccine as of 20152.
