Art And The Machine
The book, The Art and Craft of the Machine, is written by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1901. It summarises
the methodology behind Wright s approach towards architecture. The following aspects are the key
element in which Frank talks about throughout the book; the rising power of the machine, in contrast
to the abrasive effect it has in the industry and the positive effects of the machine in the fields of Art
and Crafts. Frank talks about the destruction of art with the use of the machine, as he states, that the
machine has dealt Art in the grand old sense a death blow, none will deny. This suggestion implies to
the mass production of furniture and art being produced on a large scale, only to lose their original
value. William Morris himself and his disciples created a movement called the arts and craft
movement , as they envisioned the rising power of the machine and the enslavement of mass
production. However, before Wright can talk about the negative impacts that the machine has brought
upon Art, he first describes what he means by the term Art and the Machine. Wright defines Art as

The machine has become both powerful and dangerous as Wright states, The Machine in Intellect
mastering the drudgery of earth that the plastic art may live; that the margin of leisure and strength by
which man s life upon the earth can be made beautiful, may immediately widen; its function
ultimately to emancipate human expression. He claims that the machine is a universal educator and
that it can be used by any individual to gain knowledge. However, Wright claims that the machine has
the power to destroy if such knowledge was abused, for instance, the use of enslavement for mass

Analysis Of Rescued From The Reich By Bryan Rigg
In chapter three of the book, Rescued from the Reich, Bryan Rigg showcases a glimpse into what life
was like for the Jewish population in Warsaw, Poland during the month of September, 1939. The
chapter examines many horrifying experiences the Jews faced, the role that God played in their lives,
and how the Nazis were able to take over Poland in a month s time. Furthermore, Rigg puts great
focus on a key person in the chapter, the Rebbe, who influenced the lives of many Jews. Through all
the chaos that consumed Warsaw, the Rebbe continued to teach the Jews to stay true to their beliefs.
Throughout chapter three of the book, Bryan Rigg evaluates the events that take place throughout the
Jews journey when Poland is at war with the Nazis and how the Rebbe played a major role in the Jews
lives. The point of view that the author, Bryan Rigg, takes on is an objective perspective. The authors
point of view is objective because he is just stating facts that took place during a specific time period
in history. Additionally, the author does not include any bias or skepticism in the reading.
Furthermore, the fact that his reading does not include any of his own emotions, feelings, or opinion
backs up the idea that his point of view is from an objective perspective. The author uses biblical
quotations from the Rebbe and facts to reinforce his main points. He also focuses on one main thread
that he incorporates into the reading throughout the chapter. This thread would be the huge role that
God played in the Jews life and how it helped them get through hard times while the Nazis were
bombing and invading Warsaw.
The chapter starts out describing the terror of war and the beginning of what would become known as
a tragic time period in history. Germany invaded Otwock, Poland on September 1, 1939. Early that
morning bombs were dropped awakening the frightened yeshiva students of Otwock (p38). The
students rushed to the Rebbe for instructions on what to do from there and he instructed them to leave
for Latvia, which was a neutral country nearby. In addition, he informed them to not be afraid because
God will always protect them (p38). This context of the reading shows how people looked up to the
Rebbe by coming to him for

Boston Consulting Group Matrix Paper
The focus of an organization is remain productive and relevant within the environment it resides. One
way to accomplish this is by way of maintaining an active role in determining where, how, and why
the finances are being utilized internally and externally. The Boston Consulting Group Matrix
(BCGM) creates a visual representation for recognizing improvement possibilities, strengths, and
issues requiring addressing. The BCGM is comprised of four quadrants, each with an individual entity,
though not unrelated to each other. It is also based on a sliding scale from low to high, which indicates
the linkage between growth and active influence. These sections are: Question Marks, Stars, Cash

Informative Essay About Canoeing
Canoeing is fun! It s fun on your own, and it s fun with one or two friends or family members. Most
standard canoes, though, at fourteen to eighteen feet in length, cannot comfortably accommodate more
than three passengers. A beginner s initial experience with canoeing should be on a calm pond or lake,
or a calm stretch of river. If it s especially windy, or the lake is crowded with powerboat users and
jetskiers, the experience may not be as much fun and the beginning canoeist may become frustrated.
In addition, a beginner shouldn t try canoeing the first time on his or her own. While piloting a canoe
on one s own can easily be accomplished once one has some paddling experience, it s best to gain that
experience with another person, hopefully someone who s paddled a canoe before. ... Show more

The J stroke is the bow stroke with one crucial addition at the end of the stroke, give the blade a
quarter twist so that it s perpendicular to the water s surface, and give a little push to the outside if you
re paddling on the portside, your stroke will resemble a J. You ll feel the canoe move a bit to the
portside when you do this. When starting from a stop, the turning of the canoe will be more
exaggerated, as will be the return swing from the J, but once the canoe s underway and moving well,
the swings from port to starboard and back will become less noticeable and the canoe will be moving
more smoothly. Some canoeists, rather than giving that little push at the end of the J stroke, will just
hold the paddle in the water with the blade turned, giving a rudder effect to the end of the stroke. This
is useful, especially on long trips when you want to conserve your strength (code for you re tired ).
The drawback is that by the time the canoe straightens out, it s started to slow down. The

Business Information Systems Of The Drugstore Retail Industry
The Drugstore retail industry is a $31.4 Billion industry across Canada and continues to grow steadily
(Industry Canada, 2015). There are many competitors in the drugstore retail market in Canada both
small and large. With the entrance of large American companies such as Walmart and even their very
own parent company Loblaw s, Shoppers has been forced to be at the top of their game to stay ahead
in the drug retail market. The implementation of a produce section in select locations across Canada is
one of the many ways that shoppers has been adapting to this competitive industry. Due to this
adaptation, the company has opened itself to a whole new group of competitors from convenience
store to grocery stores. Shoppers Drug Mart tackles this competition by differentiating itself in the
market by offering prestige products (Kwon, N. 2013) and convenience that competitors do not offer.
(Our Company, 2015)
Business Information Systems
In class we have learned about various business information systems that aid in organizations
experiencing more time and cost efficient solutions to internal and external challenges. At Shoppers
Drug Mart, multiple business information systems are utilised to maximize profit and productivity. A
transaction processing system is used at the point of sale to maintain a record of every transaction,
including refunds and voids. The system records if the transaction was paid for in cash, debit, credit,

The Metropolitan Opera Monologue
After I watched Carmen, what impressed me the most is Ms.Garanča s performance and the music of
this opera. I think the music wonderfully shapes principal s personality and Ms.Garanča s performance
made Carmen more vivid. She performed this opera in The Metropolitan Opera in 2010. In the first
act, when Ms.Garanča sang L amour est un oiseau rebelle , I can tell Carmen s charm and uninhibited
personality. She knows that she is very attractive to men, so she is very confident about herself and
tries to draw all the men s attention. The melody of this aria is very stretchy and flowing and it
contains a strong temptation, gorgeous and elegant. What s more, In the keywords of L amour , the
chorus companion made it particularly outstanding, I think it carries a beauty and naturalness. Added
Ms.Garanča s performance, it fully shows Carmen s bold, passionate and full of mysterious charm of
the character. Also, in the same act, when Carmen tempted Don Jose, she sang another famous aria
Près des remparts de Séville , the melody is full of passion and it also contains a bit of wild, it further
shows carmen s characterization. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

was dancing, I can see a real happy on her face and I think it came from her inner heart. I was so
involved when I was watching this part. This also shows that Carmen is a very forthright and real girl.
I feel like she was really longing for freedom and nothing can restrain

Noah Webster Research Paper
Noah Webster was born on October 16, 1758, in the West Division of Hartford, Connecticut. Webster
grew up in a regular colonial family. His father was a farmer and also worked as a weaver, while his
mother worked at home. At the time, not a lot of people went to college, since it was expensive, but
Webster like learning things so much that his parents sent him to Yale, Connecticut s very first college.
He left for New Haven, where Yale was located, in 1774 when he was 16 and then he graduated in
1778. Noah wanted to continue his education by studying the subject of law, but his parents could not

American books, so in 1783, he wrote his own school textbook, called A Grammatical Institute of the
English Language. It earned the nickname, the Blue Backed Speller , because of its characteristic blue
cover. For over 100 years, Webster s book taught children to read, spell and pronounce words. It was
the most popular American book at the time, because the books were selling at nearly 100 million
copies. In 1789, Noah Webster married Rebecca Greenleaf, the daughter of a very rich man from
Boston. During their long marriage, they had eight children and very many grandchildren. The family
lived in New Haven, and then moved to Amherst, Massachusetts. There, Webster helped with the
founding of Amherst College. The family later moved back to New Haven. In 1801, Webster started
working on defining the words that Americans use. He did this because Americans spoke very
differently than the English did, and to help people who lived in different parts of the country to speak

SOC 248T: Post Soviet Paradoxes Ryan Kelley Professor Shevchenko November 16, 2016 Response
to The Bulgarian Borderland by L. Melishkevich SUMMARY Main Claim of Paper: Religious
divisions in Madan (and other Bulgarian towns in the Rhodope region) are produced by a religious
borderland in which individuals grapple with ideological conflict and tension, characterized by
Eastern vs. Western influences. Support: Factual information and quotes from Muslim Lives in
Eastern Europe; Supportive information (for comparisons) from other books/places examined this
semester. CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK (with some complimentary questions) Argument: Pushing
back against Ghodsee s notion that Madan is unique due to the combination of its large Muslim
populations and the collapse of GORUBSO, the paper builds off past discussions of borderland (with
Where the World Ended and Consecution and Social Change) to argue that a religious borderland is
responsible for divisions in the Bulgarian Muslim population. I have little critique of the broad
argument (I think it s rather brilliant!) BUT I think it suffers from organizational and evidence
deficiencies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A Brief Note On Women And Informal Sector
1.4 WOMEN IN INFORMAL SECTOR
In many studies it is found that among all categories in the informal sector, domestic worker income is
the very lowest and they face many problems (Sundaram,1966). They are mostly involved in
household tasks, which include washing utensils, floor cleaning ,washing of cloths, cooking as well as
some outdoor tasks such as purchase of vegetables etc. Most of them live in slums, lead a monotonous
life without any colour, struggle in the every day for their survival for the family and face a number of
problems in their day to day life like long hours of work, insecurity regarding jobs , low status within
the house as well as in the outside world (Gathia,1983). (Bipul Hazarika, Saswata Ghosh 2002)
Women in particular are the much affected in the informal labour market, women generally find
employment in peripheral jobs of the large units as temporary , contract or part time workers. there are
many women working as a domestic servants, hawkers, construction workers and petty traders and
women in search of livelihood who are self employed selling petty commodities such as
fruit, vegetables, beedis or even their own labour and bodies as domestic workers or as prostitutes.
Most of them are either illiterate or having lower education. They have to work in low paid and low
skilled jobs the irony is that through women bear double burden patriarchal perception consider them

The National Cemetery Administration ( Nca )
Throughout history, many monumental events led to the development of the National Cemetery
Administration (NCA). Ricketts (2014) notes that the mission of the NCA is to provide Veterans with
an honorary burial space in national cemeteries. They place a heavy significance on paying tribute to
the Veteran s services and sacrifices. In order to better understand the efforts carried out by the NCA,
it is beneficial to review its history and development. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran
Affairs ( History and development of the national cemetery administration , 2015), the origin of
National cemeteries began during the Civil War. Prior to the establishment of such places, fallen
soldiers were often buried on battlefields, nearby campsites, or taken to the families chosen cemetery.
However as the war progressed, the chaos and limited land titles led to quick and inadequate burials.
Neither the Union nor the Confederacy were equipped with the awareness and resources to properly
bury their soldiers . In 1861, Congress provided the Union with benefits by appointing the Army s
Quartermaster General as a conductor of burial responsibilities. This order worked to ensure that there
would be a record of all burials. It also stated that a grave should be marked with the placement of a
wooden headboard. Although these painted headboards resembled a memorial of the fallen soldier,
they quickly succumbed to environmental elements ( History and development of the

Stoke City Case Study
Seasons One to Three
In division three, the lead up to the first season was uneventful. But, after season one gameplay,
Fulham was relegated to division three in place of the Wolverhampton Wanderers, lifting division
three ATL to 4.28. Even so, the preparation for the second season saw little talent movement, with
only Crystal Palace trading talent, acquiring one unit to own a total of five and increase division ATL
to 4.43.
Relegations after season two gameplay reduced division three ATL to 4.28. Subsequently, more
significant talent commerce began. Stoke City sold three players to a team from division one, reducing
their talent to one and division three ATL to 4.0. Season three gameplay then caused relegations and

Seasonal win percentage varied from predictions by as much 87.5%, with an average variation of
29.1%. This implies an important lesson in economics; that calculations indicative only, not
certainties. It furthermore reminds franchise managers to prepare for volatility where possible, with an
example being Swansea s actions to minimise the potential profit reductions of sub optimal talent
levels by choosing to remain in division three.
Off‐Field Performance
Despite win percentage variability, Swansea was profitable in all four seasons to such an extent
overall as to exceed expectations, but only when considering management s contribution in the fourth
season. Seasons one to three, on the other hand, incurred more modest outcomes. Starting with ten
million in capital, the team eventually expanded its net worth to over sixty seven million. So, even
without managerial oversight in the first three seasons, Swansea City remained modestly profitable.
This was primarily due to start up talent levels. Their initial talent level of four was projected to
generate a profit of two to eleven million per season, depending on the ATL of division three
competitors. In terms of actual results, these projections eventuated to average profits of 9.7 million
which, despite a degree of seasonal variability as seen in Chart C, was in line with expectations
overall.
In the fourth season, talent trading improved Swansea s profit projections. An optimised projection of

Monteverdi Italian Opera Comparison
Italian opera is the term used to describe compositions of opera composed in Italy or the term used to
describe compositions of opera which use the Italian language. Italian opera first found its foothold
around the beginning of the seventeenth century through composers such as Jacopo Peri with his
composition Dafne which was one of the first compositions to be considered an opera. Among the
many composers who brought opera to fame within the musical world, Claudio Monteverdi and
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were two of the most prominent composers of Italian opera. Although
Monteverdi and Mozart were composing Italian operas over a hundred and fifty years apart from each
other, their operas contained many similar characteristics. In this essay, Monteverdi s Italian opera L

This can be seen in Eurydice s piece in bars 257 259 of Act Four shown below in Example 2.
Monteverdi uses this compositional technique within this opera in order to effectively and efficiently

Monteverdi s use of a high pitched and sustained notes contributes and enables the singer of Eurydice

Henry Ford s Impact On Society
More than any single person of the last century, Henry Ford can take accountability for creating the
American middle class. We can thank him or curse him, but either way, we have to acknowledge the
impact Henry Ford had on our society. You might not know that Henry Ford did not start out as a
successful producer of automobiles. After building his first car, the Quadricycle. In 1899 he formed
the Detroit Automobile Company, which quickly failed after only a few vehicles were produced.
(Stanford). Henry and some of his original investors regrouped and formed the Henry Ford Company
which quickly ran into problems as well. In 1902 Henry was dismissed by his board of directors from
the company that carried his name because of his inability to bring a car to production. The company
was reorganized as the Cadillac Motor Car Company under the engineering leadership of Henry
Leland. Henry and some of his original investors regrouped and formed the Henry Ford Company,
which quickly ran into problems as well. Henry Ford was dismissed by his board of directors from the

Ford felt he was ready to market an automobile for the public and the Ford Motor Company was

Plot Summary In April of 1971, the United States Supreme Court issued a ruling that ended all state

races at T. C. Williams High School located in Alexandria, Virginia. The movie expands on many
different smaller issues that are centered on the main issue of hatred of race, The african American

who could barely tie his own shoe. Boone reluctantly takes the job after realizing he is an idol for the

American soldiers due to the fact that they never knew when Japanese soldiers would appear and

violence of the war. As word of the conditions that the American soldiers were fighting in reached the

Living Life in American Samoa
There are many different people living in this world with different culture diversity, and ways of

ways of living. Living life in American Samoa is more unique from other countries. First of all, living
life in American Samoa is easier then any other countries as far as I know. In American Samoa we get
food free because the Samoans mainly live off the land. There is no house or rent payment. The people
of Samoa grow their own plantation, go fishing and help out others. Everyone works together and

Samoa is very different from other countries. We have to live with much pride in our own ancestors
who brought out and formed what we collect now as our culture. So life in American Samoa is formed
out of our culture. Another way that I thought life in American Samoa is so easy, is because we have
to respect each other especially old people and other people that live in your own society. Secondly,
we have to respect our own people with great honor and sincere. This means whatever old people tell
us to do; we have to do it any way. Just the same thing likes our parents. Thirdly, we have to love
everyone in our community. Share what you have with family or your friends. Some families in
American Samoa show their values with other countries. This means show what they need and what
they benefit for their life in the long run. So every life need is always based on culture. We build our
own houses, because there are not that many bills to pay. So let us compare the living life in American
Samoa and living life here in Hawaii. These two ways of living life was very, very different. Here in
Hawaii we have to work in order to live and survive. But in American Samoa we don t. In Hawaii if
we don t have jobs or work, we can t plan to pay a lot of bills including house or apartment rent. So

The Romans delayed in whether deciding to help out or not, but soon realized that if they didn t,
Carthage would be called and acquire part of the island (Morey, 1901). It was due to their late arrival,
that a Carthaginian garrison had been already admitted in the city and conquered most of the
surrounding cities of the island (Morey, 1901). The Romans, though, achieved the possession of
Messana (Morey, 1901). The king of Syracuse along with the Carthaginians attempted to remove the
Romans out of Sicily (Morey, 1901). But the Romans showed their greater strength at land against
both, the king and the Carthaginians, and which led the king to overturn their alliance in favor of the
Romans (Morey, 1901).
The Romans then knew that in order to win the battle against the Carthaginians, they would need a
stronger navy to fight at sea (Morey, 1901). So the Romans constructed 100 replica vessels of a
Carthaginian vessel that had wrecked in the coast of Italy, within 60 days (Morey, 1901). At the same
time, Roman soldiers were being trained to row the vessels, and train to encounter the Carthaginians

Camelot Alternate Ending
Merlin took a break from moving about Arthur s chambers, tidying up, to stare absently out the
window. The sun had risen warm and bright over Camelot today. And down below, the courtyard was
bustling with servants and guards and knights, all hurrying about to do their various separate tasks and
duties. It was just a normal morning for all of them. Nothing out of the ordinary. But as he stared
down at the scene before him, Merlin couldn t help but shudder to think how close they had all been to
not waking up to another normal day. Of course, no one else was aware of that fact. No one else knew
of the events that had transpired last night. No one else knew that there had been yet another threat to

Apparently the King had decided to vacate the seat at his desk in favor of finding objects to throw at
his manservant s head. Wake up, Merlin! I ve been trying to get your attention for the past minute

Merlin frowned. Had he really been that deep in thought? That he hadn t even heard the prat calling
out to him from across the room? It wasn t a voice that could easily be ignored. And he would know.
He had tried many times before to just tune out Arthur s voice. He was rarely ever successful. What
did you want, Sire? he asked at last, turning away to look out on the courtyard once more. I want to
know what s wrong with you! Arthur answered, his patience beginning to wear

Persuasive Essay On Sexual Education
Let s teach our kids about sex
Does sex education encourage sex? Many parents are afraid that talking about sex with their teenagers
will be taken as permission for the teen to have sex. Nothing could be further from the truth. If
anything, the more children learn about sexuality from talking with their parents and teachers and
reading accurate books, the less they feel compelled to find out for themselves (Spock 62).
I will argue teaching sexual education once a child starts kindergarten will have the most effect on
their life. I strongly agree it will lower teen pregnancy, teach kids that sex is a desire, and it s okay be
curious. With discussing sex earlier on, it would help them realize to take it more serious, less kids
would regret having sex before meeting the right person, and it would teach them relationship advice.
Even though adults don t think it s right for kids to be taught because starting in kindergarten, their too
young and might think it s us telling them to have sex. The purpose of my argument is to show parents
sex causes curiosity into children s minds and they need to be taught the right way from the wrong
way and don t need to be bashed for having curiosity about sex.
Why is teen pregnancy becoming another topic individuals don t talk about? More and more teens
everyday are popping out babies left and right. In the United States teens have the most pregnancy and
STD s. Many advisors, and adults in the United States feel as if the problem can t be

This medium level risk is mitigated by dedicating a network solely to dealing with the needs of the
secondary server.
There is also the risk of data confidentiality at the third level with the CSP. This is also a medium level
risk, which is mitigated by ensuring the contract drawn with the CSP enforces strict data access level
measures.
The business continuity plans guards Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability at all times. Ensure
confidentiality by enforcing access to the backups to only the disaster response team and the system
administrators in charge. Ensure integrity by verifying and validating the backup snapshots after the
backup is completed. Ensure availability by providing dual power to the backup servers so that the
business would not be disrupted at any time due to data center disasters.
CONCLUSION
Disasters are unforeseen circumstances and the only way of tackling them is to be thoroughly prepared
for the impact. The prime aim of having a Disaster Recovery and a Business Continuity Plan is to
have minimal impact on day to day businesses. The Three tiered business continuity plan suggested

The Sea s Ability Of An Intertidal Rock Platform
Introduction
The sea s ability to produce an intertidal rock platform was first commented on as early as 1846 by
Ramsey, and then decisively classified into four themes by Trenhaile (1980), which is still relevant to
scientist studying the formations today. The four themes are: 1) the role of marine and subaerial
processes in platform development; 2) morphology of shore platforms; 3) modelling platform
development; and 4) measuring rates of erosion (Stevenson 1, 2000). Research has commonly
assumed that the origins of the shore platform are wave cut, however in recent years there has been
research into a wider range of platforms and process leading to more theories.
Defining and Distinguishing between Shore Platforms
In order attempt to distinguish between different types of shore platforms, the most basic form of
description is those, which slope seaward, and then those with a distinctive seaward edge
characterised by a cliff (Stephenson et al., 2013). Sunamura has helped characterize those cliffs with
the use of calling the slope edge a Type A Platform and a Cliff edge and a Type B Platform, this is
represented in Figure 1. Fig. 1. A visual representations of shore platform categories as described by
Sunamura (1992) in Kennedy (2015).
Morphological Approaches
It is a contentious issue amongst researchers as to whether weathering or wave erosion have a bigger
role in the development of a shore platform. Bartrum, 1935; Hills, 1972) both regard wave erosion as

Holes by Louis Sachar
People Can Do Extraordinary Things When Put To The Test
He thought only about each step when it came, and not the impossible task that lay before him. Higher
and higher he climbed. His strength came from deep inside himself and also seemed to come from the
outside as well.
People can do extraordinary things when put to the test. The author of the book Holes , Louis Sachar
packed this book with many difficult tests for his characters. However when put to the test, they
achieved extraordinary results. In this book, Hector Zeroni (nicknamed Zero ), the friend of the
protagonist, Stanley, is determined to overcome his hurdle of not knowing how to read, Stanley is

When put to the test, he was able to do extraordinary things. Stanley was not a very fit person. His
skin was soft and unused to work, he was large and was not healthy. Like all the other boys at the
camp, he didn t enjoy digging holes, but because of his unhealthy condition, it was much harder for
him to do so. Because he was forced to do something he couldn t do easily or well, he was being put
to the test. However, after a few weeks digging, he realised that He was a lot stronger than when he
first arrived. His body had adjusted somewhat to the heat and hard conditions. When put to the test,
Stanley s fat and unhealthy body took advantage of his predicament, and made him better physically
and emotionally. Emotionally because if he ever came to another seemingly impossible task, he would
know that he would be able to achieve it just like he managed to dig all those holes. The strengthening
of his mind and body helped Stanley carry Hector up God s Thumb more easily without being daunted
and having doubts about his ability. When put to the test, Stanley was able to do extraordinary things.
Miss Walker was not a pleasant person, but when tested, she could do extraordinary things. Her
Grandparents, Charles and Linda Walker, were determined to find the treasure of the outlaw, Kate
Barlow, and when the responsibility of the search for it was past down to her, she realised, like Hector
did, that she needed help. Her extraordinary deed was to set up a

Mr. Williams And The Music Of Music And Film
John Williams once said so much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by
ourselves, so it s gratifying to have something you have done linger in people s memories and linger it
did. Mr. Williams has made significant contributions to the arts of music and film. To fully understand
the gravity of his achievements and their affect on humanity, we must first look at the progression of
sound in film; the effect music has in film and its audience; and lastly his accomplishments of music
and film.
In the infancy of film, movies were silent but not without sound. To make film a more pleasant
experience, music was provided to cover up the ambient noise of the projector and help create an
agreeable atmosphere, often by the use of a solo piano. (Fischoff, S. (2005)). The musician generally
improvised playing mostly a variety of popular romantic and melodramatic scores of the late
nineteenth century (such as William Tell Overture, Ride of the Valkyrie, Les Preludes, etc.) as long as
it accompanied the action/scene or enhanced the mood (for dramatic effect). ( From Scene to Shining
Screen: A Short History of Film Music . para. 1 2. (n.d.)). As film grew in popularity and length, so
did the musical accompaniment adding instruments to the ensemble until even some theaters were
housing full orchestras. By the end of the silent era, the industry had completely shifted from the all

  • 2. Art And The Machine The book, The Art and Craft of the Machine, is written by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1901. It summarises the methodology behind Wright s approach towards architecture. The following aspects are the key element in which Frank talks about throughout the book; the rising power of the machine, in contrast to the abrasive effect it has in the industry and the positive effects of the machine in the fields of Art and Crafts. Frank talks about the destruction of art with the use of the machine, as he states, that the machine has dealt Art in the grand old sense a death blow, none will deny. This suggestion implies to the mass production of furniture and art being produced on a large scale, only to lose their original value. William Morris himself and his disciples created a movement called the arts and craft movement , as they envisioned the rising power of the machine and the enslavement of mass production. However, before Wright can talk about the negative impacts that the machine has brought upon Art, he first describes what he means by the term Art and the Machine. Wright defines Art as structural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He claims that the machine is a universal educator and that it can be used by any individual to gain knowledge. • 3. Analysis Of Rescued From The Reich By Bryan Rigg In chapter three of the book, Rescued from the Reich, Bryan Rigg showcases a glimpse into what life was like for the Jewish population in Warsaw, Poland during the month of September, 1939. The chapter examines many horrifying experiences the Jews faced, the role that God played in their lives, and how the Nazis were able to take over Poland in a month s time. Furthermore, Rigg puts great focus on a key person in the chapter, the Rebbe, who influenced the lives of many Jews. Through all the chaos that consumed Warsaw, the Rebbe continued to teach the Jews to stay true to their beliefs. Throughout chapter three of the book, Bryan Rigg evaluates the events that take place throughout the Jews journey when Poland is at war with the Nazis and how the Rebbe played a major role in the Jews lives. The point of view that the author, Bryan Rigg, takes on is an objective perspective. The authors point of view is objective because he is just stating facts that took place during a specific time period in history. Additionally, the author does not include any bias or skepticism in the reading. Furthermore, the fact that his reading does not include any of his own emotions, feelings, or opinion backs up the idea that his point of view is from an objective perspective. The author uses biblical quotations from the Rebbe and facts to reinforce his main points. He also focuses on one main thread that he incorporates into the reading throughout the chapter. This thread would be the huge role that God played in the Jews life and how it helped them get through hard times while the Nazis were bombing and invading Warsaw. The chapter starts out describing the terror of war and the beginning of what would become known as a tragic time period in history. Germany invaded Otwock, Poland on September 1, 1939. Early that morning bombs were dropped awakening the frightened yeshiva students of Otwock (p38). The students rushed to the Rebbe for instructions on what to do from there and he instructed them to leave for Latvia, which was a neutral country nearby. In addition, he informed them to not be afraid because God will always protect them (p38). This context of the reading shows how people looked up to the Rebbe by coming to him for ... • 6. Informative Essay About Canoeing Canoeing is fun! It s fun on your own, and it s fun with one or two friends or family members. Most standard canoes, though, at fourteen to eighteen feet in length, cannot comfortably accommodate more than three passengers. A beginner s initial experience with canoeing should be on a calm pond or lake, or a calm stretch of river. If it s especially windy, or the lake is crowded with powerboat users and jetskiers, the experience may not be as much fun and the beginning canoeist may become frustrated. In addition, a beginner shouldn t try canoeing the first time on his or her own. While piloting a canoe on one s own can easily be accomplished once one has some paddling experience, it s best to gain that experience with another person, hopefully someone who s paddled a canoe before. ... The J stroke is the bow stroke with one crucial addition at the end of the stroke, give the blade a quarter twist so that it s perpendicular to the water s surface, and give a little push to the outside if you re paddling on the portside, your stroke will resemble a J. You ll feel the canoe move a bit to the portside when you do this. When starting from a stop, the turning of the canoe will be more exaggerated, as will be the return swing from the J, but once the canoe s underway and moving well, the swings from port to starboard and back will become less noticeable and the canoe will be moving more smoothly. Some canoeists, rather than giving that little push at the end of the J stroke, will just hold the paddle in the water with the blade turned, giving a rudder effect to the end of the stroke. This is useful, especially on long trips when you want to conserve your strength (code for you re tired ). The drawback is that by the time the canoe straightens out, it s started to slow down. • 8. The Metropolitan Opera Monologue After I watched Carmen, what impressed me the most is Ms.Garanča s performance and the music of this opera. I think the music wonderfully shapes principal s personality and Ms.Garanča s performance made Carmen more vivid. She performed this opera in The Metropolitan Opera in 2010. In the first act, when Ms.Garanča sang L amour est un oiseau rebelle , I can tell Carmen s charm and uninhibited personality. She knows that she is very attractive to men, so she is very confident about herself and tries to draw all the men s attention. The melody of this aria is very stretchy and flowing and it contains a strong temptation, gorgeous and elegant. What s more, In the keywords of L amour , the chorus companion made it particularly outstanding, I think it carries a beauty and naturalness. Added Ms.Garanča s performance, it fully shows Carmen s bold, passionate and full of mysterious charm of the character. Also, in the same act, when Carmen tempted Don Jose, she sang another famous aria Près des remparts de Séville , the melody is full of passion and it also contains a bit of wild, it further shows carmen s characterization. ... It earned the nickname, the Blue Backed Speller , because of its characteristic blue cover. For over 100 years, Webster s book taught children to read, spell and pronounce words. It was the most popular American book at the time, because the books were selling at nearly 100 million copies. • 11. Borderland SOC 248T: Post Soviet Paradoxes Ryan Kelley Professor Shevchenko November 16, 2016 Response to The Bulgarian Borderland by L. Melishkevich SUMMARY Main Claim of Paper: Religious divisions in Madan (and other Bulgarian towns in the Rhodope region) are produced by a religious borderland in which individuals grapple with ideological conflict and tension, characterized by Eastern vs. Western influences. Support: Factual information and quotes from Muslim Lives in Eastern Europe; Supportive information (for comparisons) from other books/places examined this semester. CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK (with some complimentary questions) Argument: Pushing back against Ghodsee s notion that Madan is unique due to the combination of its large Muslim populations and the collapse of GORUBSO, the paper builds off past discussions of borderland (with Where the World Ended and Consecution and Social Change) to argue that a religious borderland is responsible for divisions in the Bulgarian Muslim population. Ricketts (2014) notes that the mission of the NCA is to provide Veterans with an honorary burial space in national cemeteries. They place a heavy significance on paying tribute to the Veteran s services and sacrifices. In order to better understand the efforts carried out by the NCA, it is beneficial to review its history and development. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs ( History and development of the national cemetery administration , 2015), the origin of National cemeteries began during the Civil War. Prior to the establishment of such places, fallen soldiers were often buried on battlefields, nearby campsites, or taken to the families chosen cemetery. However as the war progressed, the chaos and limited land titles led to quick and inadequate burials. Neither the Union nor the Confederacy were equipped with the awareness and resources to properly bury their soldiers . In 1861, Congress provided the Union with benefits by appointing the Army s Quartermaster General as a conductor of burial responsibilities. This order worked to ensure that there would be a record of all burials. It also stated that a grave should be marked with the placement of a wooden headboard. Off‐Field Performance Despite win percentage variability, Swansea was profitable in all four seasons to such an extent overall as to exceed expectations, but only when considering management s contribution in the fourth season. Seasons one to three, on the other hand, incurred more modest outcomes. Starting with ten million in capital, the team eventually expanded its net worth to over sixty seven million. So, even without managerial oversight in the first three seasons, Swansea City remained modestly profitable. This was primarily due to start up talent levels. Their initial talent level of four was projected to generate a profit of two to eleven million per season, depending on the ATL of division three competitors. In terms of actual results, these projections eventuated to average profits of 9.7 million which, despite a degree of seasonal variability as seen in Chart C, was in line with expectations overall. Italian opera first found its foothold around the beginning of the seventeenth century through composers such as Jacopo Peri with his composition Dafne which was one of the first compositions to be considered an opera. Another way that I thought life in American Samoa is so easy, is because we have to respect each other especially old people and other people that live in your own society. Many parents are afraid that talking about sex with their teenagers will be taken as permission for the teen to have sex. Nothing could be further from the truth. If anything, the more children learn about sexuality from talking with their parents and teachers and reading accurate books, the less they feel compelled to find out for themselves (Spock 62). I will argue teaching sexual education once a child starts kindergarten will have the most effect on their life. I strongly agree it will lower teen pregnancy, teach kids that sex is a desire, and it s okay be curious. With discussing sex earlier on, it would help them realize to take it more serious, less kids would regret having sex before meeting the right person, and it would teach them relationship advice. Even though adults don t think it s right for kids to be taught because starting in kindergarten, their too young and might think it s us telling them to have sex. The purpose of my argument is to show parents sex causes curiosity into children s minds and they need to be taught the right way from the wrong way and don t need to be bashed for having curiosity about sex. The Sea s Ability Of An Intertidal Rock Platform Introduction The sea s ability to produce an intertidal rock platform was first commented on as early as 1846 by Ramsey, and then decisively classified into four themes by Trenhaile (1980), which is still relevant to scientist studying the formations today. The four themes are: 1) the role of marine and subaerial processes in platform development; 2) morphology of shore platforms; 3) modelling platform development; and 4) measuring rates of erosion (Stevenson 1, 2000). Research has commonly assumed that the origins of the shore platform are wave cut, however in recent years there has been research into a wider range of platforms and process leading to more theories. Defining and Distinguishing between Shore Platforms In order attempt to distinguish between different types of shore platforms, the most basic form of description is those, which slope seaward, and then those with a distinctive seaward edge characterised by a cliff (Stephenson et al., 2013). In the infancy of film, movies were silent but not without sound. To make film a more pleasant experience, music was provided to cover up the ambient noise of the projector and help create an agreeable atmosphere, often by the use of a solo piano. (Fischoff, S.
