Red Guard Diversity
The diversity within the Red Guard community created by disagreements between families political
opinions ultimately led to the fall of the revolution. As historian Jonathan Spence stated, one group
was, frustrated over policies that kept them off the paths of political advancement because (they) had
the ill fortune to be born to parents who had connections with the Guomingdang, the landlords, or the
capitalist exploiters of the old regime, while another was contradictorily, denied access to the tiny
number of elite schools that had become, in effect, prep schools , for the children of influential party
cadres. Thus, while the first group was discouraged because they were born into families not granted

Queer Studies Montegary
I. Introduction
While my choosing Prof. Montegary s Introduction to Queer Studies fulfills the course s requirement
to be present in a higher numbered class than the previous observation, it also offered me the
opportunity to study a professor I had previously spoken to on numerous occasions regarding the PhD
program, various disciplines and the overall business of academics . As such, I looked forward to the
opportunity to now observe her pedagogical praxis in practice (per se) and style.
As a class, the Introduction to Queer Studies (WST111) is meant to provide...a basic overview of
queer studies and introduce...major texts, theories, and thinkers within this interdisciplinary
field...focus(ing) specifically on the development of queer studies within the US academy and on how
queer theory has transformed the study of sexuality within the United States (syllabus). The particular
module I would be observing on Wednesday, March 10th Feminist Theories of Race, Class, and
Sexuality included readings from the Combahee River Collective, Barbara Smith, Cherríe Moraga and
Gloria Anzaldúa, Barbara Cameron, Merle Woo, and Audre Lorde. The sheer number of readings ...

The first half of the class was spent discussing the social context in which the readings emerged from.
Prof. Montegary teaches with (as opposed to from) a combination of notes and Powerpoint. She
framed the reading in broader contexts, making connections between the theories, their feminist
authors and social conditions at the time. Each essay is introduced through a representative quote,
some biographical notes about its author(s) , followed up by questions meant to generate further
discussion. There seems to be a standard group of about five to eight students who readily answer
questions, and while she will pick them, Prof. Montegary also chooses students at random (joking to
one reluctant student, Yep, you

Bad Leadership In Antigone
There is no happiness where there is no wisdom; ...proud men in old age learn to be wise. Choragos
narrated at the end of the play Antigone (41). Short plays such as Antigone are exemplary literatures
that contain a vast amount of ethical issues, therefore enforcing critical thinking. Antigone, a tragic
drama play, was created by Sophocles before 441 BC. The well written play dictates the story of a
young woman who is charged for burying her brother as a representation of honor and the thoughts of
a stubborn king. Creon is a self centered character that is after Antigone and does everything in his
power to murder her. Finally, the play illustrates that bad leadership that involves and leads to vanity,
murder, and oppression.
Creon is the powerful king who rules the state after the death of Oedipus, with his ruling power he
clearly shows throughout the play a sense of vanity. Creon had a very firm and cold attitude towards
people, but his purpose as king was to provide political and social order. During the play Antigone, ...

It turns the situation to a worst degree, because it seemed that murdering Antigone was no longer a
punishment of what she had done. Instead it was a penalty to Haimon for trying to help Creon make a
more rational decision. As mentioned previously, assassinating people to show how powerful or
rightful a person is, shows a lack of humanism. Furthermore, Antigone mentioned a strong point
yelling, Ah the good fortune of kings, licensed to say and do whatever they please! to which Creon
replies, You are alone here in that opinion. Antigone later in that altercation explains No, they are with
me. But they keep their tongues in leash (16). This proves that many did not have the courage to speak
up as she did, this coercion caused Creon to do whatever he pleased, as a result creating a fascist

John Updike s A P, The Great Atlantic, And Pacific Tea
A P, the Great Atlantic, and Pacific Tea were founded in 1859 in New York City. It is a real grocery
store chain that is the setting of John Updike s short story A P . The story is being narrated by Sammy,
a 19 year old intelligent but uneducated full pledged character in the story. The main themes of the
story come along the slow revelation of the character of Sammy through his experience inside the
grocery store as a cashier. The historical context of the story, the people s conformity to standards in
that era, and Sammy s thoughts and acts of rebellion are the focal points of this classic amidst the
American consumerism. The theme of historical backdraft of the story is undeniable in time for the
publication of the story in 1961. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although Sammy s sexual thoughts had been aroused by Queenie, their casual defying of community
standards had influenced more seriously Sammy s beliefs of rebellion. Sammy, being the sarcastic and
observer of rules, compliments with Queenie s and her friends totally ignoring any rules. In paragraph
18, in an attempt to stand up for herself and her friends and to re establish superiority, Queenie replied
to Lengel, We are decent. She was able to defend herself in front of the authoritative figure that Lengel
represents. This incident proves to be the chance for Sammy to transform his wishes into reality. It
gave him the opportunity to impress Queenie and at the same time to finally say out loud what his
thoughts are without any fear of the outcome. The girls, and who d blame them, are in a hurry to get
out, so I say I quit to Lengel quick enough for them to hear, hoping they ll stop and watch me, their
unsuspected hero. This shows how quitting his job had been already lingering on his thoughts and how
it was so easy for him to do so. Sammy all along had the intention of showing how he dislikes the

EEO And Diversity Management Self-Assessment
In my self assessment, I scored highest in the area of Legal Environment: EEO and Diversity
Management (21). I scored the lowest in the area of Staffing (10). I m not surprised I scored the
highest in Legal Environment because I am more interested applying the rules/laws. Even where I
currently work, I make sure that everyone is fairly treated because if an instance does occur, I am the
type of person who will speak up for what s right. In the workplace, it is important that the employees
are treated equally because if they are not then it will affect their performance and they will eventually
leave the organization if no action is taken. I scored the lowest in the area of Staffing because I

CJ227: Criminal Procedure
November 11, 2013
In this paper we will be discussing the procedural steps that the police are required to take once John
began to incriminate himself along with the procedural steps they are required to take following the
arrest and interview of John at the police station. After covering the procedural steps we will compare
both the preliminary hearing and grand jury proceeding to establish probable cause for the felony
charges. Once we finish covering the two procedural steps we will cover what the judge needs to take
into consideration when setting the bond for John. The final thing that will be covered is what an
arraignment is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once John is booked he will be allowed one phone call and then incarcerated until the arraignment
where he will appear before the judge. When he is before the judge, the judge will decide if there was
probable cause for his arrest and decide whether or not he will be allowed to post bail, and if so, the
amount. Now, we move on to cover and compare the preliminary hearing and the grand jury process to
establish probable cause for the felony charges. A preliminary hearing is used to determine if there is
enough evidence against John to go to trial. A good way to look at the preliminary hearing is to think
of it as a mini trial. It is where the judge will allow hearsay evidence. The judge must make their
decision based on probable cause and if the prosecutors have enough evidence to convince a jury that
John is guilty. During a preliminary hearing both sides can argue why or why not a trial should
happen. Witnesses and evidence can be used and defense can cross examine. A preliminary hearing is
held as soon as possible after the arraignment of the defendant. Some states only require a preliminary
hearing if the suspect is charged with a felony. Some states use a grand jury. A grand jury is where a
group of citizens listen to evidence and determine themselves on whether or not there should be a trial.
The only other person that is there with the grand jury is the prosecutor showing them all

The Ethical Theory Of Ethical Theories Essay
Ethical theories are concepts or moral values that dictate whether choices are right or wrong. The two
ethical theories that are the most prominent in society are Utilitarianism and Deontology.
Utilitarianism is a theory that judges the value of the action as good or bad based on the consequences
of the deed, while Deontology believes the motive of the act is more important. When determining the
value of the decisions, the variables are based on the guidelines of each ethical theory. This includes
providing the basis of how to make logical decisions founded on ethical reasoning. Unfortunately,
there are many situations where individual s rights are threatened due to unethical and unmoral
situations like sexual harassment in the workplace. To prevent similar situations from occurring,
individuals must be able to fully understand when to apply the use of ethics to decision making. For
this type of mindset to take place, the public needs to be educated on the different types of ethical
ideologies, and know how to approach situations based on ethical solutions. Once the public is aware
of the ethical theories and how to avoid unethical situations, there will a decreased amount of sexual
harassment in the workplace. Utilitarianism, also known as consequentialism, is a theory where
actions are considered good or bad depending on the consequences of the actions, not the motives. In
Utilitarianism, the main goal of the theory is to maximize the most amount of good for all people.

Persuasive Essay On Freedom And Privacy
We live in a world of ever growing technology. A world more connected than ever before in human
history and no one saw it coming even a few decades ago. In that short time, we have seen a world
more connected, one where everyone can know nearly anything about anyone and everything. It also
means that there is more potential for someone to be watching us at almost all times without our
knowing. This can be done through the internet or through what most usually think of when thinking
of surveillance, cameras. Surveillance can be done by anyone who truly wants to do it. It is usually
done by big internet corporations like Google, for example, who collects the data of their users all the
time and by governments. In this essay, I ll be focusing on the United States government s use of
surveillance through cameras, their collection of data of the very people they are meant to serve and
how that poses a great threat to individual freedom and privacy. In 2013, Edward Snowden, who some
view as a patriot and others a traitor, exposed the world exactly what was going on in the United
States. The National Security Agency or NSA had been tapping phones, collecting data and watching
the citizens of the United States as well as people around the world, including heads of states of US
allies like Germany s Chancellor, Angela Merkel. The NSA, however, isn t the first instance of US
government surveillance, all it did was make the world aware of what was really going on in the

Male Gaze In The Gaze
The gaze is an important part of any literary work in that it defines the viewpoint from which the
reader sees the rest of the story. The gaze, however, is also much more than a particular point of view.
It is a conveyance of power, and a way in which a narrator is able to completely shape the way readers
understand other characters in the story, imparting their own standards and beliefs onto an often
unrealizing audience. The gaze has a very clear relation to power in the sense that it is what shapes
how an audience sees certain things. An example of this is through the institution of white supremacy
in media via the gaze of the mass media in the mid 20th century. As Bell Hooks explains, when black
people in the United States first had the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether it be the console game or the video, the gaze conveys the same image: the woman is an
object, there for the male to act upon, but without any input onto her surroundings of her own.
Let us take, for example, the role of Mary Jane in the Spiderman franchise. This is especially
important because Spiderman is primarily marketed towards a younger audience, thus imparting the
male gaze upon young people who may never realize that they are being influenced. Mary Jane is the
object of affection of not only Spiderman, but also of Harry Osborn, who becomes the villain Green
Goblin.
Here, we see Mary Jane as the object of desire for both hero and villain, and is subsequently captured
and used to lure the hero into battle, where Spiderman must come to her rescue and save the day. And
then, once rescued, of course, Mary Jane falls for her heroic savior, despite the obvious danger that his
existence has placed her in throughout the course of the tale. But think, for a minute, what things
would be like if they were portrayed from the female gaze, by way of Mary Jane. The story would be
entirely different, with the men involved all becoming villains in their own

Working Mothers Essay
Mothers are the ones who have been chosen to keep the growth of humanity. They are the ones who
build the humanity. Without mothers, there are no human beings. Mothers are the one who raised these
humans to live in societies until this day. They are the ones who sacrifice their time and their body to
raise children all these years and they are the reasons that populations has risen. Even though these
populations and eras have changed through time, mothers are and will always be the core of any
population on the earth.
That is why many people in the society give the responsibilities of raising a child to the mothers.
Hence, many people in this society criticize working mothers under the pretext that she needs to give

They claim that if the mother was not there for her child all the time and watched over him or her all
the time, then the child will eventually grow up and make poor decisions, starting from small ones like
getting bad grades due to the neglect of their working mothers. It could lead to them end up to being
drug dealers or violent persons (Gelernter, David. 2015). Also, claiming that quitting job and being
full time mother is the best to live happily and mothers won t regret this decision (Venker, 2004).
However, their claims are wrong and they only viewed the harmful effects of working mother. I agree
that working mother have negative impact on children, however the mother can change negative
effects to positive. For instance, the claims that state that working mother will lessen the bond
between parent and child. This is not entirely right the grandmother could take care of the child while
the mother is out for working these will surly strengthens the bonds and relationship between the child
and his grandmother, and the grand mother and her daughter. These claims only focus in the negative
parts leaving the positive

Why Is Nuclear Waste Bad For The Environment
Lately it seems as if if the Earth has been deteriorating. It is quite common to hear of the impact of the
overuse of energy sources. Because our population has abused the wonderful powers of energy, the
Earth is suffering from the aftermath. Environmental damage being one of its biggest consequences.
The use of energy can have positive effects if society learns how to manage it well. While nuclear
energy can generate plenty of electricity, it can easily be abused. Nuclear energy plants can
unfortunately be preferred targets for terrorists, also producing nuclear waste. Nuclear waste is bad for
the environment because it requires a dumping ground due to the fact that it cannot be processed. If
this continues, there will eventually be no more

Area 51 Conspiracy Theory
Area 51 is a United States Air Force Base located about 80 miles north of Las Vegas. It is a very
secretive base that the U.S didn t claim that it even existed for many years, but it s pretty obvious.
There is various amounts of satellites that have seen it and people have even got close enough to see it
with their bare eyes. The CIA finally acknowledged it in 2013, but to this day it is still as mystery to
what is inside. This base is where many new planes are built and tested. Some of the planes and new
machines even look out of this word. And that gives people the idea that the government has extra
terrestrial life inside the base. There has been hundreds and thousands of pictures floating around the
internet of aliens and weird looking creatures saying that these photos are from Area 51, but none of it

their phones so much though that people are never looking up anymore.
In my opinion some people just still like to believe it because they are always thinking the government

Gender Roles And Kids Toys Essay
Gender Roles and Kids Toys
In David Barry s article, Guys vs. Men, he discussed the differences between guys and men . This
article made several valid points, including that guys will try and out perform each other where sports
are concerned and that the space shuttle is the ultimate guy toy. My question is why do only guys play
with all the neat toys?
Part of the answer to this question might be that men are encouraged to play with hi tech toys while
girls are given a Barbi doll or a toy oven. The best time to see how these differences are encouraged
by our society is during the Holiday season. The toys I have seen for boys are mainly Star Wars action
figures or Nintendo 64 games. The toys advertised for girls were mostly easy ... Show more content on

In the 1950s that was a logical assumption, but in the 1990s more women work outside of the home.
In 1959 the percentage of women working that were 20 years or older according to the U.S. Bureau of
Labor was 36.3%. In 1997 the figure is 58.5%. For men in 1959 the figure was 83.3%. For men in
1997 the figure is 74.2.
With the increase of women entering the work force it would be more logical to focus on toys that
might encourage the child to develop an interest that could turn into a career. Even though I would
encourage young girls to play with other toys besides Barbi, I am not recommending that boys be
encouraged to play with dolls.
Even computer games are designed with gender in mind. A new computer game that was just released
is a Barbi game where the girls go shopping with Barbi and she can be programmed to call them by
name. I absolutely shudder every time I see this game advertised on T.V. The games that are aimed at
the boys are football, hockey, or Star Wars games.
As boys grow into men and girls grow into women the computer gaming industry begins to focus
more on the male population. It is challenging to try and find a game that is not directed at men. The
type of bias can simply be having a male figure that is designated as the player, this is a technique that

Militarism In Ww1
War World War I (WWI). Words that bring back some horrid memories of an unpleasant time. The

Italy, Russia and Turkey. The Great War, caused by many events such as imperialism and alliances,
but militarism out of all was the underlying (main) cause to the start of one of the bloodiest wars. To

Militarism was the belief or desire of a government or the people should maintain a strong military
and ready to use it when needed and aggressively to defend or promote national interests. Building up
your army can be a major set of to other countries, making them feel as if they are about to get
attacked. Also other countries would want to have more power than the others so they would have a
competition that could lead to war. For example, evidence shows in a chart by Richard Overy, in 1999,
all the countries were building up their armies and navy and spending lots of money on them. This can
cause war because if the other countries saw that another country has a good military they wouldn t
want to be unprepared and they start building up their army and then all hell breaks loose. Another
example written in, The Hammer or the Anvil , by Bernhard von Bulow; he writes, There is no welfare
for us without power, without a strong army and a strong fleet. (Bulow 1). This shows to readers that
they were readying themselves for some kind of war. This shows to readers that militarism is
obviously the underlying cause for WWI, because without a military there would be no

First Impressions of Elizabeth and Darcy First impressions in the novel Pride and Prejudice play a
crucial role. Whether they be initially correct then changed because of the views of others like Jane
Bennet s first impression of Charles Bingley. Or whether they be initially very wrong then slowly
changed throughout the novel into a more accurate interpretation of the character. They almost provide
the basis for which the story is structured upon. The novel progresses as the reader s (and the
characters) views of each character change. This is most evident in the relationship between Elizabeth

first impression of Fitzwilliam. Which at this point she sees him as a rude, arrogant, and proud

Entrepreneurial Intention
Literature Review Nowadays the trend of world is increasing towards the entrepreneurship because it
is responsible for generating jobs, economic growth and prosperity of the society through innovation
activities (Shane and Venkataraman, 2000; Galloway and Brown, 2002). For that, developing
individual s intention towards entrepreneurship and what are the factors that are responsible to divert
the mind of people is central problems in the entrepreneurship research (Autio et al 2001; Francis et
al. 2004; Kaijun and Sholihah, 2015). The entrepreneurial intention is a commitment to twitch a new
business (Krueger, 1993; Autio et al., 2001). In the regions of British and Spain investigated by Linan,
Nabi and Krueger (2013) that enhancing the level of knowledge and awareness about entrepreneurship
would increase self efficacy perceptions and hence entrepreneurial intentions. No significant
relationship between entrepreneurial intention and self efficacy was noticed by (Owoseni and
Olakitan, 2014). Likewise, motivation, achievement and entrepreneurial intentions were found
positively and significantly related. Vajihe and Mehdi (2014) demonstrate that there is a significant
dissimilarity in the entrepreneurial intention of students who have got entrepreneurial education and
who have not got the entrepreneurial education. Similarly, more recently, among the Malaysian
respondents entrepreneurial intentions are positively related to their social learning (family up brings

Sylvia Plath Poetry Style Analysis
Sylvia Plath: Joie de Vivre Perhaps some day I ll crawl back home, beaten, defeated. But not as long
as I can make stories out of my heartbreak, beauty out of sorrow, wrote Sylvia Plath in her journals,
unpublished until nineteen years following her death. The relevance between the American author s
life and the inspiration of her literary works cannot be disputed. She wrote about distinct experiences,
from the death of her father at a young age to the depression she fell into after her husband left her.
Plath, burdened with hardship, turned her pain into numerous influential poems and a semi
autobiographical novel, The Bell Jar. She received the honors of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and the
Glascock Prize as recognition of her works. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As described previously, Daddy combines specific details of Plath s life and her father s, making
comparisons as brutal as to the Holocaust in their own home, and comparing him to the devil. In
Daddy she wrote that he, Bit my pretty red heart in two. / I was ten when they buried you. / At twenty
I tried to die / And get back, back, back to you. / I thought even the bones would do. / But they pulled
me out of the sack, / And they stuck me together with glue. Each line written describes specific events
in her life, and it could not be clearer. This one of sixteen stanzas is exactly related to the events in her
life, yet also provides insight into her own thoughts on herself. In Ariel, plath wrote of being suicidal,
thus describing her life as she attempted suicide many different times and was successful in 1963
when she killed herself ( Sylvia Plath. Biography).
As much as one could continue connecting Sylvia Plath s life and work based on simple life details,
why she wrote about her life is far more compelling. She was said to have wanted to understand her
own mind, the mind that doctors seemed to understand better than herself. Plath also wrote certain
works intending her family never read them, stating that she did not want her mother to read The Bell
Jar because it was indicative of her suicidal thoughts. Sylvia Plath made

Perotin Is Hailed As A Kind Of Mozart Of His Time
Pérotin is hailed as a sort of Mozart of his time. He was a scholarly musician and musical innovator .
Pérotin is called by many different names: Perotinus his Latin Name and Perotinus Magnus Pérotin
the Great ; and even optimus discantor , or great composer of discant. According to Hussman, Pérotin
was a court composer for Notre Dame, but his connection to Notre Dame is not entirely confirmed. It
is because of an account by the English traveler Anonymous IV and letters to a Bishop that it is
accepted that Pérotin was associated with Notre Dame. Whether he wrote specifically for Notre Dame
or not, Pérotin wrote magnificent music that has been preserved for several centuries to this day .
The life of Pérotin is uncertain and full of speculation. Different scholars have very diverse ideas of
Pérotin s life. Tischler believed that Pérotin was born sometime between 1155 and 1160. He also
stated that he was a pupil of Leonin, the composer of the Magnus liber. Pérotin is believed to have to
have been a better organum composer the Leonin himself and even revised the Magnus liber at the end
of the 12th century between 1180 and 1190 . In revising the Magnus liber, Pérotin composed and
inserted his own clausula and puncta, such as Alleluya Nativitas into the Magnus liber. The works of
Pérotin are known to be beautiful and thoughtfully voiced with colorful textural harmonies. Sometime
after revising the Magnus liber, Pérotin began composing three voice organum. Later in his life,

Suicide In Teen Suicide
Suicide continues to be one of the main causes of death in teens throughout America. Statistically,
suicide in the second leading cause of death for those ages ten to twenty four and around 3,470 people
grades ninth to twelfth attempt suicide each day in the United States (Youth Suicide Statistics 1). The
reason for these people wanting to take their life is unknown, however, divorce of parents, formation
of a new family, or moving to a new community, are common reasons for suicide. On the other hand,
those who battle depression or develop depression increase the risk of a suicide attempt. People may
think that everything is going wrong and dying is the only solution; but people will always be willing
to help. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and nothing is worth taking your own
life over.
In Willa Cather s short story Paul s Case , the main character, Paul, is clearly unhappy with his own
life as well as his home life. Paul lost his mother and has an unstable relationship with his father. He
dreads going home, as Cather explains: ...the hopeless feeling of sinking back forever into ugliness
and commonness that he had always had when he came home (Cather 108). This quote expresses the
hatred and disgust that Paul has towards his home and he will do anything to avoid coming home. This
book is very relatable and realistic because similar to Paul, many teenagers dislike their home life and
would much rather be away from their own family. Distancing yourself from loved ones, family,
friends, teachers, coaches, or whoever it may be, can be an early sign of depression (Suicide in
Children and Teens 1). Paul may or may not suffer from depression, but either way, his death could
have easily been prevented if Paul had a more positive outlook on life.
While homelife has an enormous impact on someone s emotions, life outside of home may be even
more important. According to Suicide in Children and teens, rebellious behavior such as constant
lying may be a sign of suicidal person. When questioned by the Principal as to why he was there, Paul
stated, politely enough, that he wanted to come back to school. This was a lie, but Paul was quite
accustomed to lying; found it, indeed, indispensable for

Mother Teresa Was Known For Giving
Mother Teresa was known for giving. She devoted a lot of her life to helping the poor and the sick,
and she received a Nobel Peace Prize for the work that she did. Her 87 full years of living a life that
most of us couldn t imagine are what gives Mother Teresa quotes such weight. Whether you are
religious or not, her experiences in life made her a wise woman. The following Mother Teresa quotes
on life are good reminders of how to live each day.
1. Create Better Relationships
If you judge people, you have no time to love them.
When was the last time you judged someone? Today? Probably! As humans we are built with the
capability to judge others to an inch of their life. But, we judge them based on our opinions and
beliefs, not on the truth. We don t know what others are thinking. We don t know what makes them do
what they do or what their intentions really are. So why do we judge?
Mother Teresa was focused on loving other people, and she understand that judging took away the
capability to love. If you are too busy pointing a finger at other people, you can t stop and feel
connected to them in any way. Instead, you feel repelled by them, which puts a distance in between
the two of you. In other words, instead of judging people, make your time about loving them for who
they are and you will develop stronger relationships.

Upton Sinclair and His Influence on Society Essay
Upton Sinclair, the famous American author, wanted to be a great influence on society. He was born in
1878 in Baltimore, Maryland, from a family of Southern aristocracy. His father was an alcoholic and
his mother came from a wealthy family. When Sinclair was ten, the family moved to New York. His
father sold hats and spent his evenings in bars coming home drunk every night. As a child, Sinclair
was an excellent reader and scholar. By the age of fourteen, he began writing in his spare time. He
attended Columbia University and later he moved to Quebec, Canada. There he lived in extreme

In addition, Sinclair went to great lengths to ensure that his immigrant family was not foreign to the
American mind. Sinclair emphasized that their values of hard work, family togetherness, honesty, and
carefulness are the same as those of the reading public. People could see their own families as the one
in The Jungle. They could not withstand the effects of greed and competition any more than
individuals could. The Jungle impressed readers throughout the world and Sinclair became famous
almost overnight.
While influencing the families, the publication of The Jungle also influenced the workers of the meat
processing industry. Although Sinclair claimed that he had not been concerned with the meat
processing industry when he wrote The Jungle, it influenced the course of national legislation and
produced a permanent impact on American life. Sinclair criticized the social and sanitary conditions in
the Chicago stockyards. As soon as The Jungle was published, meat packers started working very hard
to clean up or hide the worst abuses. They were fearful of Roosevelt s investigations. The meat
packing scandal was front page newspaper material for weeks. The Jungle set off social protest and
violent reactions from the public. It was a single novel, and it sparked the same protests and reactions
from the workers of the factory.
The Pure Food and Drug Act was a result of Upton Sinclair s writing. After the release of The Jungle,

The Pros And Cons Of Pope Gregory IV
Around the last half of the 11th century, Pope Gregory VII not only enacted moral alterations within
the Church that had continuous effects, but the Pope also clashed with a political leader Henry IV. This
indicates that these changes are defined as a revolution because a revolution is a sudden and vast
change that has lasting effects. Although most of the prominent modifications enacted by Pope
Gregory VII altered the ethical lives of Church leaders still remain important today, the doctrines
established by the Pope and the emerging power of the papacy radically transformed the political
relationship of the Catholic Church and the secular rulers from one of intertwined and unclear powers
to an ultimate separation of church and state.

Racial impurity causes cultural differences, and cultural differences make countries perish. Setting
aside again all of the controversy, I believe that all Hitler was trying to do is become a prestigious
leader. To his people he was a great leader, he appealed to his nation by telling them what they wanted
to hear. Hitler convinced his people to look the other way when it came to the Holocaust, but why?
Looking at everything from his standpoint, I feel like he needed to step up to lead his country out of
the hole their in from the World War. He needed to set blame to a set of people so his people can feel

The National Association Of Social Workers Code Of Ethics...
Social work is a very unique profession. The other professions that are in the same realm as social
work are very specialized, however, social workers must have a broad range of knowledge in order to
help their clients. This is where multiple agencies come together to make sure professionals are
properly trained and knowledgeable. In the field of social work, ethics and values are the key
principles that provide the basis for the mission. It is these principles that guide the decisions and
actions of everyone in the profession. Without a clear set of guiding principles, social work
professionals could do more harm than good. This profession sees people during highly emotional
times in their lives, and that can be extremely challenging. The National Association of Social
Workers Code of Ethics not only sets the standards, but also guides a social worker through dealing
with ethical dilemmas. As we evolve as a society, so have the guiding principles and values for the
social work profession.
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has written a code of ethics that serves many
purposes. The main purpose is to identify the core ethics and values that provide the foundation for the
profession. It details six basic principles for social workers to follow: service, social justice, dignity
and worth, human relationships, integrity, and competence (National Association of Social Workers,
1999). The code acts as an ethical guide for students, and those professionals just

Deception in The Tempest Essay
The passage below is found in the opening act of one of Shakespeare s most illusive plays of control

in the harm of others mentally and physically. It leads to broken hearts, untold truths, or even
unpunished murder. However, in Shakespeare s The Tempest, deception is used as a virtuous art to

Although, the normally evil deception is used, Prospero uses it in such a way so that no harm is

action develops in a world which defies nature, so the events are more believable . The island is not
only uncharted, it is one on which anything can happen (Knox 128). In the words of Gonzalo:
All torment, trouble, wonder, and amazement Inhabits here. Some heavenly power guide us Out of

Miranda had been bred up in the island with her father and a monster only: she did not know, as others

about her past or her identity until the start of the play. Her father has, in a way, been deceiving her
throughout her entire life. Even throughout the course of the play, Prospero is not completely open
with his daughter. Instead, he puts her to sleep for a period of time so that she does not interfere with
his plan. Through this deception her father was not trying to harm her in any way but rather to protect
her from the vicious truth.

Predicting Behavior by Attitudes Essay
Predicting Behavior by Attitudes
Attitudes can be very complex, a product or service may be composed of many attributes or qualities
some of which may be more important than others to certain people. Furthermore, a persons decision
to act on his or her attitude is affected by other factors, such as approval by family and friends. For
this reason, multiattribute models have been constructed and are extremely popular among marketing
research.
Many models have been constructed but the most influential model is that of Fishbein 1973. The
Fishbein multiattribute model argues that attitudes can predict behaviour. It measures three
components of attitude. Salient beliefs people have about an attitude ... Show more content on

In many cases knowledge of a person s attitude is not a very good predictor of behaviour. Many
studies have obtained a very low correlation between a person s reported attitude towards something
and his or her actual behaviour towards it. (Wicker 1969). For, instance Stacey 1981 found only a
small correlation between attitudes and alcohol consumption. Furthermore, the model doesn t consider
people s past behaviour, despite evidence that this is a good predictor of future behaviour. (Bagozzi
1991). Previous performance of a behaviour helps to explain the extent of the person s actual
behavioural control in a particular situation. (Kashima et al 1992).
Following on from this criticism the Fishbein model was extended to improve its predictive ability.
This revised version is the theory of reasoned action (Azjen and Fishbein 1977) and assumes that
behaviour is a function of the intention to perform that behaviour. This new model measures
behavioural intentions, recognising uncontrollable factors, and the power of other peoples influence.

Personal, Social And Institutional Power
1. Define personal, social and institutional power. Give an example of each type of power that is
displayed in the movie.
a. Personal power is the degree of control an individual has over their own decisions. In Remember
the Titans, an example of personal power was when the white boy made a decision to start a fight with
Petey Jones (a black boy) because Petey was talking to his girlfriend and threw the first punch.
b. Social power is expressed in the way different people relate to each other, or in social dynamics .
An example of social power in the film is when the white team captain, Gerry Bertier took the advice
of his fellow teammate and black team captain when he disciplined one of his team members for not
defending adequately.
c. Institutional power is when some people have authority over others because of their position of
responsibility, usually based on their expertise or experience. Institutional power is when Coach
Herman Boone says, This is no democracy. It is a dictatorship. I am the law, as he is the head of power
in the football team and was asserting his dominance.
2. Belonging, stereotyping and discrimination are 3 key issues explored in Remember the Titans. Why
is it important for young people to develop an understanding of these three concepts in today s

throughout history. Ever since the 1990s crime rates for youth has decreased in some way compared to
the late 18th century and early 19th century. These descending crime rates have driven numerous of
jurisdictions to reconsider how they go about juvenile justices practices, which were so popular so
many years ago. States launched dominant systematic reforms arranged to diminish institutional
incarceration. Punishment for youth by the courts consisted off jails and penitentiaries. From an
historical aspect the idea; of having a different legal structure for youth offenders is rather new. In the
past, children as young as 7 years old who were detained for crimes were incarcerated right along with
adults. In the United States in the earl nineteenth century, the concept of amending juveniles was
fundamental in this country. The first juvenile facility called The House of Refuge in New

The Tempest Forgiveness Essay
The journey to forgiveness is a difficult one, wrought with obstacles that claim even the most virtuous.
Most human beings have been subject to intense feelings of hatred for someone else family member, a
lover, or a total stranger over a disagreement. In the moment, we desperately want to hurt the opposing
party physically and emotionally, but after the fact we realize that the spat was nothing in comparison
with our love for them. We see an example of this in Shakespeare s The Tempest, in the magician,
Prospero. Prospero ascends the staircase of forgiveness and self discovery through the course of the
novel. He discovers who he is as a person and figures out that the rarer action is [in] virtue than in
vengeance, that the struggle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ariel is indebted to Prospero for when Prospero made gape [the] pine and let [Ariel] out, freeing him
from the pine tree prison that his former witch master, Sycorax, put him in. Ariel plays the role of
Prospero s servant very willingly, telling him, I come [to] answer thy best pleasure (I.ii.189 90). Even
though he services Prospero with graciousness, the one thing Ariel desperately desires is his freedom.
Over the course of the novel, readers see Prospero and Ariel develop a friendship outside of the usual
master/servant relationship; they gain a sense of extreme trust in each other. Prospero begins
entrusting more personal tasks to Ariel, unlike Caliban who carries firewood and does chores.
Prospero asks Ariel to keep tabs on his brother and the royal party and keep them living (II.i.296).
With increasing satisfaction for the tasks Ariel does for him, Prospero praises him more, saying, Of
my instruction hast thou nothing bated, and Bravely... hast thou [performed], (III.iii.83 85). In the end,
Ariel is the one who convinces Prospero to forgive his brother and his accomplices, telling Prospero,
If you now beheld [the royal party], your affections [w]ould become tender... [m]ine would, sir, were I
human, (V.i.16 19). Prospero responds with and mine shall, showing his complete faith in Ariel and
his feelings about the situation. Prospero develops a fond love for Ariel that helps in his journey to
forgiveness and self discovery. Along with Ariel s increasing need for affirmation is his growing need
for Prospero s love. He asks Prospero, Do you love me, master? No? and Prospero replies Dearly, my
delicate Ariel, (IV.i.49 50). The relationship between Prospero and Ariel has grown beyond a
servant/master one and has drifted into a friendship, almost familial. They trust one another s choices
and feelings, making it easier for Ariel to

Examples Of Foreshadowing In The Nightmare By Sherman Alexie
In this quote, Alexie uses foreshadowing as a literary device. Flashbacks show what is important in the
past and how it reflects the future. While Thomas and Victor were/are kids they got into a fight and
stopped talking. Now Thomas is helping Victor. Although this is a flashback, it may also be
interpreted as a hint of Victor and Thomas being friends again and help each other. Alexie is trying to
tell his readers, even though you may have fought in the past, that doesn t mean you need to not care
for each other. I really like this idea because I believe it is what everyone should do. Be there for them.
If I were Victor, at this point I would say sorry to Thomas for not talking to him and be better friends
with him that they were before. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I really like this idea because it makes you pay attention and really understand the novel. Alexie uses
allegory in the quote demonstrating how James s voice acts as a savior. He refers to his voice to a
thick rug to save even the most beautiful and delicate things. I believe the author uses this to show that
James may be about to help Victor or maybe be with his as a fallback just like how he caught the glass
with his voice. This also reflects off of the theme of being spiritual. Alexie might be trying to just
show how Indians really were or are. I really don t understand what is happening here because it
seems to be just a whole bunch of short stories that have very little to do anything with each other. I
really dislike this idea because it just makes the whole novel seem confusing and hard to understand.
In this quote, Alexie uses symbolic as the literary device. He says the black circle looks like a smoke
hole and that is used when there is a fire. Most people get hot when mad and need to vent. I believe
the studio is more of a venting ground than anything. The author may have put this here to symbolize
how relaxing or stress reliving the Indian tipis may be for some

Occurence of Crime Essay
Within each society wealth, power and status is distributed unfairly and unequally. This inequality
creates social class divisions, people at different levels, where some have more while others less
(Haralambos, 2008). All societies form through the same process where behaviour is learnt from
others within the community. The learning process, known as socialization, varies and it is culture that
determines how to think by teaching appropriate behaviour relevant to that society. Informal rules
using the same norms and values specifies behaviour for certain situations and suggests how to behave
overall. However, some people do not follow these informal rules and act as they wish. In this instance
the term deviance is used for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the small minority within the law, capitalists, determines value consensus rules for the
majority, workers. It could be argued this is unfair, workers are unable to contribute to laws.
Functionalism is based on meritocracy, suggesting inequality of wealth and power is normal, the most
deserving should be rewarded as individuals have equal opportunities of progression providing they
work hard. However, it fails to take into account that some are more likely to accomplish success than
others. It could be suggested people who have access to economic resources have greater chances
(Taylor, 1997). Functionalism consider behaviour to be deterministic, it does not look at what
motivates behaviour rather it is the effect of something that causes it, which if controlled stops bad
behaviour Durkheim believes society growth breaks solidarity as weakened authority and morals arise
when people become independent and stop relying on each other. This causes anomie, a feeling of
normlessness which can develop into deviance (Taylor, 1997). However, Durkheim considers crime a
valuable commodity as punishment demonstrates authority. This controls behaviour whilst also
strengthening societys power, although excess crime reflects society breakdowns (Haralambos, 2008).
However, Livesey (2005) argues that a perfect functionalist society would not need to change. Merton

The Politics of Caesar Augustus Essays
The Politics of Caesar Augustus
In 31BC Augustus won the battle of Actium against his former colleague in the triumvirate, but now
bitter rival, Antony and the queen of Egypt, Cleopatra, after having been in the triumvirate since
43BC.
This immediately faced him with a grating predicament; he now sought to fit his own position, as sole
remaining member of the triumvirate, with the old republican system. He had several problems, one of
which was that all through the civil war with Antony he had portrayed Antony to be a tyrant and a
ruthless man who wanted to rule Rome for himself, as a dictator. This was potentially what he had
now become, and so he had several possibilities; to retire, which could lead to another civil war, and

On the other hand he didn t want to look like he had a military dictatorship because this would have
angered traditional republicans. He solves this problem by placing friends of his in command of forces
and limited their tenure to two years, so restrictions the threats that these frontier garrisons pose to
Rome.
We can see here that he is charming the hearts of the people by buying, out of his own pocket and
from the spoils of war, land for the soldiers that have fought for him in the civil war, also representing
the lack of requiring of an army, and so marketing the peace, and also isolating himself from the way
in which Julius Caesar gained his power (marching an army upon Rome). This is cutting down of
legions from 60 to 28 is also an obvious sign of peace for Rome.
We can learn a lot about the first emperor of Rome from Suetonius The Twelve Caesars. In book 18
we can learn that Augustus wanted to convey the right impression when he started, so had to be seen
doing the right thing directly after the battle of Actium. It says He reduced Egypt into the form of a
province; and to render it more fertile, and more capable of supplying Rome with grain, he employed
his army to scour the canals. The Roman attitude towards Egypt at this time would be fairly hostile
having just fought a war with them, and so Augustus made the right decision to create a Roman
province that

Blockbuster Analysis Case
The Life of Blockbuster History and Background Blockbuster s origins date back to the mid 1980 s
when the video cassette recorder (VCR) was the new hype and families all over America were quickly
turning to movie rentals as a form of in home entertainment. David Cook, who previously started
David P. Cook and Associates, Inc. to offer consulting and computer services, saw an opening in the
quickly expanding movie rental business. Eager to start a business, he jumped in making Blockbuster
the Wal Mart of movie rentals offering a wide variety of movies to customers in a family environment
with standout buildings and bright lights. From there, Blockbuster growth exploded bringing in
external investors and national attention. To ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Strategy Over time, like any good business, Blockbuster has had to adapt their strategy to the current
market conditions and needs. They have gone from Blockbuster Rewards, which requires a yearly fee
to acquire points which can be used for free rentals, to Movie and Game Pass, to GameRush stores,
which purchases consumer s audio and video titles, to their most recent strategy of Blockbuster
Online. Due to the size of the organization, it is difficult to adjust quickly to change. This explains
why it took Blockbuster nearly 5 years to respond to Netflix s online video rental strategy. Despite
Blockbuster s late entry, the market seems to be responding well to Blockbuster s newest strategy. In
the two years since inception, nearly 2 million customers have signed up for Blockbuster online.
While this is only a fraction of Netflix s 6 million subscribers, Blockbuster offers other features that
Netflix is not able to offer. A couple of these competitive advantages are four in store rentals each
month along with the unlimited movie rentals via mail. This is a clever strategy by Blockbuster
because it is an effort to fill their stores again in hopes that people will rent other movies, buy popcorn
or snacks, or rent video games. Another competitive advantage held by Blockbuster is their plan to
ship movies to customers from their stores instead of warehouses. This will drastically reduce ship
times to customers which is a major complaint customers of

Ida Tarbell Biography
Ida Tarbell was one of the most successful magazine writers in the United States during the last
century. Working with a few male colleagues, in a group that collectively became known as the only
woman muckrakers, she emerged as one of America s earliest and finest investigative reporters. She is
the famous journalists who is known for the her pioneering investigative report that led to break up the
Standard Oil Company s monopoly.
Ida Tarbell was was born on November 5,1857 in the rich oil region of northern Pennsylvania. Her
father was an oil producer and refiner, her family lived happily and peacefully. Until 1872, under the

Rockefeller s unfair business practices. Her most important work which inspired many other
journalists to write about trusts, titled The History of the Standard Oil Company published the first
installment by McClure s in 1902. It was a seminal example of muckraking which was so immediately
successful that it was eventually extended to 19 part work from the original three series plan. In the
journal, Tarbell exposed Standard s questionable practices, including those events that had so greatly
impacted her family and others in their area decades earlier. The articles also helped to define a
growing trend to have the liberty to investigate and expose in journals of the day, a technique that in
1906 President Theodore Roosevelt would label muckraking. Tarbell s exhaustive study was
successful, it not only helped the development of a new style of investigative journalism sometimes
referred to as muckraking but also led to breakup of the Standard in the 1911, which was determined
to be in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. The publication of The History of the Standard Oil
Company was so important ecause it made her be regarded as one of the most influential muckrakers
of the Gilded Age, helping to usher in that age of political, economic and industrial reform known as
the Progressive

Summary of The Restoration of Rome
The book starts in 507 or around that time. The ruler of Italy Theodoric the Goth, writes to the Eastern
Roman emperor Anastasius in Constantinople. Theodric who was one of the three emperors was the
most successful in recreation of the old roman empire. Theodoric the great is in the first four chapters
in the Peter Heather s book. While reading these chapters the reader understands that despite the fall of
the Roman empire Theodoric is still successful and there is much cultural and education in this time
period. For personal reasons Theodoric will have Boethius imprisoned and killed.
Then Justinian comes, being one of the greatest, if maybe the greatest of the Byzantine emperors. The

A Memorable Person
What makes someone special, important, and memorable is judged by people differently. In my
personal opinion, what makes a person memorable is how he or she has impacted your life, for better
or for worse. I decided to deviate from the obvious choice of a dear family member or an especially
great teacher, instead, choosing someone in my life whose impact has been recent. My friend Oniqa
Urmi. Oniqa enriches the lives of those around her, understands people where others fail to, and is
unforgettable to anyone who has the privilege to know her. To begin, I met Oniqa about 5 years ago
during my freshman year of high school. It was our first class of Physical Education in the gym
playing volleyball. After some instructions from our teacher broke the class up into partners, and
surprise my partner was Oniqa. Both of us were extremely shy, quiet, and didn t talk much during the
45 minutes we spent hitting a ball back and forth. Luckily our friendship didn t with second period PE.
With time we became good friends. In reality, the first day we met wasn t the start to the typical
friendship. Looking back, we were an unlikely pairing that without realizing it had many similarities
and experiences. Despite our somewhat awkward first encounter, the following years spent getting to
know each other better I learned she was a lot more than a shy girl in my PE class. As mentioned
above, I chose Oniqa as my interviewee because of the impact she has had on my life in the time I

Argumentative Essay On Same Sex Violence
According to news.northwestern.edu, domestic violence occurs at least as frequently, and likely even
more so, between same sex couples compared to opposite sex couples. However, why is this issue
understudy? Why is the print media or digital media not showing or focusing on this issue as much as
hetersexual couples? As a country we have come a long way, since Obama have passed the same sex
marriage law, the LGBTQ commmunity has gone upwards as an American citizens. On the other
hand, the criminal justice system seems put the LGBTQ community backwards instead of forward.
There is huge amount of same sex violence in between intimate partner. Some are underreported by
the police department, and some same sex couples do not report the abuse at all. It sad to see this
discrimination and the lack of importance in these issue played out in America. Unfortunately, if this
issue continues in a cycle, it may results in heinous crimes that we may or may not see in the news, It
will just be another statistics in America eyes. There are different issues and circumstances when it
becomes to intimate partner violence in same sex couple that explained why they are excluded. For,
one it is gendered roles, Gendered roles has played a huge part in same sex violence. The different
circumstances and labels between lesbian and gay couple are astoundingly. It helps to look at the real
issue from both perspectives instead of putting them together as one. Studies report show that between

Fitts Posners Phases of Learning
Fitts Posners Phases of Learning
An often quoted phrase about practice, usually to encourage children to keep working and to keep
repeating the same task, is that practice makes perfect . It when we look at pupils practicing in any
sport, or in any other physical activity for that matter, it is quite clear that, although they are repeating
movements, in many cases they are not improving significantly. In fact, in many cases, they are not
improving at all. In many cases their lack of success and achievement is de motivating and they
become careless and half hearted or even angry at what they are doing because of the lack of success.
The theory behind the idea that practice makes perfect is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I would not use any negative feedback, because this would demotivate them, I would use extrinsic
feedback, telling them the good points they were doing. I would do this because by pointing out their
good points they feel happy and confident doing the skill.
The associative stage begins when the learner has a greater appreciation of the form of the skill and
the anticipated perceptual and sensory information involved. There will be less errors and the learner
will be able to begin to focus on points that could be termed refining the technique as opposed to
learning the basics. In terms of swimming this can be getting the performer to do the arm and
leg/kicking action together. Once they had developed this I could think about incorporating the
breathing into this. As they are still learning to put their own technique together, I would not use
negative feedback still, but I would use constructive criticism, to make sure they know that they can
still improve but I would do a lot of this. I think the best way to get feedback at this level would be
intrinsic. By getting the feedback from the performer themselves, it is meaning that they have to think
about their own performance and what was good and bad.
By the autonomous stage the performance is almost automatic. The learner will not have to pay a great
deal of attention to the perceptual and

Introduction While my choosing Prof. Montegary s Introduction to Queer Studies fulfills the course s requirement to be present in a higher numbered class than the previous observation, it also offered me the opportunity to study a professor I had previously spoken to on numerous occasions regarding the PhD program, various disciplines and the overall business of academics . As such, I looked forward to the opportunity to now observe her pedagogical praxis in practice (per se) and style. Short plays such as Antigone are exemplary literatures that contain a vast amount of ethical issues, therefore enforcing critical thinking. Antigone, a tragic drama play, was created by Sophocles before 441 BC. The well written play dictates the story of a young woman who is charged for burying her brother as a representation of honor and the thoughts of a stubborn king. Creon is a self centered character that is after Antigone and does everything in his power to murder her. Finally, the play illustrates that bad leadership that involves and leads to vanity, murder, and oppression. Creon is the powerful king who rules the state after the death of Oedipus, with his ruling power he clearly shows throughout the play a sense of vanity. Creon had a very firm and cold attitude towards people, but his purpose as king was to provide political and social order. During the play Antigone, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, Antigone mentioned a strong point yelling, Ah the good fortune of kings, licensed to say and do whatever they please! to which Creon replies, You are alone here in that opinion. It is a real grocery store chain that is the setting of John Updike s short story A P . The story is being narrated by Sammy, a 19 year old intelligent but uneducated full pledged character in the story. The main themes of the story come along the slow revelation of the character of Sammy through his experience inside the grocery store as a cashier. The historical context of the story, the people s conformity to standards in that era, and Sammy s thoughts and acts of rebellion are the focal points of this classic amidst the American consumerism. When he is before the judge, the judge will decide if there was probable cause for his arrest and decide whether or not he will be allowed to post bail, and if so, the amount. Now, we move on to cover and compare the preliminary hearing and the grand jury process to establish probable cause for the felony charges. A preliminary hearing is used to determine if there is enough evidence against John to go to trial. A good way to look at the preliminary hearing is to think of it as a mini trial. It is where the judge will allow hearsay evidence. The judge must make their decision based on probable cause and if the prosecutors have enough evidence to convince a jury that John is guilty. During a preliminary hearing both sides can argue why or why not a trial should happen. Witnesses and evidence can be used and defense can cross examine. A preliminary hearing is held as soon as possible after the arraignment of the defendant. Some states only require a preliminary hearing if the suspect is charged with a felony. Some states use a grand jury. A grand jury is where a group of citizens listen to evidence and determine themselves on whether or not there should be a trial. • 8. The Ethical Theory Of Ethical Theories Essay Ethical theories are concepts or moral values that dictate whether choices are right or wrong. The two ethical theories that are the most prominent in society are Utilitarianism and Deontology. Utilitarianism is a theory that judges the value of the action as good or bad based on the consequences of the deed, while Deontology believes the motive of the act is more important. When determining the value of the decisions, the variables are based on the guidelines of each ethical theory. This includes providing the basis of how to make logical decisions founded on ethical reasoning. Unfortunately, there are many situations where individual s rights are threatened due to unethical and unmoral situations like sexual harassment in the workplace. To prevent similar situations from occurring, individuals must be able to fully understand when to apply the use of ethics to decision making. For this type of mindset to take place, the public needs to be educated on the different types of ethical ideologies, and know how to approach situations based on ethical solutions. Once the public is aware of the ethical theories and how to avoid unethical situations, there will a decreased amount of sexual harassment in the workplace. Utilitarianism, also known as consequentialism, is a theory where actions are considered good or bad depending on the consequences of the actions, not the motives. In Utilitarianism, the main goal of the theory is to maximize the most amount of good for all people. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A world more connected than ever before in human history and no one saw it coming even a few decades ago. In that short time, we have seen a world more connected, one where everyone can know nearly anything about anyone and everything. It also means that there is more potential for someone to be watching us at almost all times without our knowing. This can be done through the internet or through what most usually think of when thinking of surveillance, cameras. Surveillance can be done by anyone who truly wants to do it. It is usually done by big internet corporations like Google, for example, who collects the data of their users all the time and by governments. In this essay, I ll be focusing on the United States government s use of surveillance through cameras, their collection of data of the very people they are meant to serve and how that poses a great threat to individual freedom and privacy. In 2013, Edward Snowden, who some view as a patriot and others a traitor, exposed the world exactly what was going on in the United States. • 12. Male Gaze In The Gaze The gaze is an important part of any literary work in that it defines the viewpoint from which the reader sees the rest of the story. The gaze, however, is also much more than a particular point of view. It is a conveyance of power, and a way in which a narrator is able to completely shape the way readers understand other characters in the story, imparting their own standards and beliefs onto an often unrealizing audience. The gaze has a very clear relation to power in the sense that it is what shapes how an audience sees certain things. An example of this is through the institution of white supremacy in media via the gaze of the mass media in the mid 20th century. As Bell Hooks explains, when black people in the United States first had the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is especially important because Spiderman is primarily marketed towards a younger audience, thus imparting the male gaze upon young people who may never realize that they are being influenced. Mary Jane is the object of affection of not only Spiderman, but also of Harry Osborn, who becomes the villain Green Goblin. Here, we see Mary Jane as the object of desire for both hero and villain, and is subsequently captured and used to lure the hero into battle, where Spiderman must come to her rescue and save the day. And then, once rescued, of course, Mary Jane falls for her heroic savior, despite the obvious danger that his existence has placed her in throughout the course of the tale. This article made several valid points, including that guys will try and out perform each other where sports are concerned and that the space shuttle is the ultimate guy toy. My question is why do only guys play with all the neat toys? Part of the answer to this question might be that men are encouraged to play with hi tech toys while girls are given a Barbi doll or a toy oven. For men in 1997 the figure is 74.2. With the increase of women entering the work force it would be more logical to focus on toys that might encourage the child to develop an interest that could turn into a career. Building up your army can be a major set of to other countries, making them feel as if they are about to get attacked. Also other countries would want to have more power than the others so they would have a competition that could lead to war. In Ariel, plath wrote of being suicidal, thus describing her life as she attempted suicide many different times and was successful in 1963 when she killed herself ( Sylvia Plath. Biography). As much as one could continue connecting Sylvia Plath s life and work based on simple life details, why she wrote about her life is far more compelling. She was said to have wanted to understand her own mind, the mind that doctors seemed to understand better than herself. Pérotin is called by many different names: Perotinus his Latin Name and Perotinus Magnus Pérotin the Great ; and even optimus discantor , or great composer of discant. According to Hussman, Pérotin was a court composer for Notre Dame, but his connection to Notre Dame is not entirely confirmed. It is because of an account by the English traveler Anonymous IV and letters to a Bishop that it is accepted that Pérotin was associated with Notre Dame. Whether he wrote specifically for Notre Dame or not, Pérotin wrote magnificent music that has been preserved for several centuries to this day . The life of Pérotin is uncertain and full of speculation. Different scholars have very diverse ideas of Pérotin s life. Tischler believed that Pérotin was born sometime between 1155 and 1160. He also stated that he was a pupil of Leonin, the composer of the Magnus liber. Pérotin is believed to have to have been a better organum composer the Leonin himself and even revised the Magnus liber at the end of the 12th century between 1180 and 1190 . In revising the Magnus liber, Pérotin composed and inserted his own clausula and puncta, such as Alleluya Nativitas into the Magnus liber. Statistically, suicide in the second leading cause of death for those ages ten to twenty four and around 3,470 people grades ninth to twelfth attempt suicide each day in the United States (Youth Suicide Statistics 1). The reason for these people wanting to take their life is unknown, however, divorce of parents, formation of a new family, or moving to a new community, are common reasons for suicide. On the other hand, those who battle depression or develop depression increase the risk of a suicide attempt. People may think that everything is going wrong and dying is the only solution; but people will always be willing to help. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and nothing is worth taking your own life over. In Willa Cather s short story Paul s Case , the main character, Paul, is clearly unhappy with his own life as well as his home life. Paul lost his mother and has an unstable relationship with his father. He dreads going home, as Cather explains: ...the hopeless feeling of sinking back forever into ugliness and commonness that he had always had when he came home (Cather 108). This quote expresses the hatred and disgust that Paul has towards his home and he will do anything to avoid coming home. This book is very relatable and realistic because similar to Paul, many teenagers dislike their home life and would much rather be away from their own family. Distancing yourself from loved ones, family, friends, teachers, coaches, or whoever it may be, can be an early sign of depression (Suicide in Children and Teens 1). Paul may or may not suffer from depression, but either way, his death could have easily been prevented if Paul had a more positive outlook on life. While homelife has an enormous impact on someone s emotions, life outside of home may be even more important. According to Suicide in Children and teens, rebellious behavior such as constant lying may be a sign of suicidal person. When was the last time you judged someone? Today? Probably! As humans we are built with the capability to judge others to an inch of their life. But, we judge them based on our opinions and beliefs, not on the truth. We don t know what others are thinking. We don t know what makes them do what they do or what their intentions really are. So why do we judge? Mother Teresa was focused on loving other people, and she understand that judging took away the capability to love. If you are too busy pointing a finger at other people, you can t stop and feel connected to them in any way. Instead, you feel repelled by them, which puts a distance in between the two of you. In other words, instead of judging people, make your time about loving them for who they are and you will develop stronger relationships. 2. Many studies have obtained a very low correlation between a person s reported attitude towards something and his or her actual behaviour towards it. (Wicker 1969). Furthermore, the model doesn t consider people s past behaviour, despite evidence that this is a good predictor of future behaviour. (Bagozzi 1991). Previous performance of a behaviour helps to explain the extent of the person s actual behavioural control in a particular situation. (Kashima et al 1992). Although this is a flashback, it may also be interpreted as a hint of Victor and Thomas being friends again and help each other. Alexie is trying to tell his readers, even though you may have fought in the past, that doesn t mean you need to not care for each other. I really like this idea because I believe it is what everyone should do. Be there for them. If I were Victor, at this point I would say sorry to Thomas for not talking to him and be better friends with him that they were before. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I really like this idea because it makes you pay attention and really understand the novel. Alexie uses allegory in the quote demonstrating how James s voice acts as a savior. He refers to his voice to a thick rug to save even the most beautiful and delicate things. I believe the author uses this to show that James may be about to help Victor or maybe be with his as a fallback just like how he caught the glass with his voice. This also reflects off of the theme of being spiritual. Alexie might be trying to just show how Indians really were or are. I really don t understand what is happening here because it seems to be just a whole bunch of short stories that have very little to do anything with each other. I really dislike this idea because it just makes the whole novel seem confusing and hard to understand. In this quote, Alexie uses symbolic as the literary device. He says the black circle looks like a smoke hole and that is used when there is a fire. Most people get hot when mad and need to vent. I believe the studio is more of a venting ground than anything. The author may have put this here to symbolize how relaxing or stress reliving the Indian tipis may be for some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Occurence of Crime Essay Within each society wealth, power and status is distributed unfairly and unequally. This inequality creates social class divisions, people at different levels, where some have more while others less (Haralambos, 2008). All societies form through the same process where behaviour is learnt from others within the community. The learning process, known as socialization, varies and it is culture that determines how to think by teaching appropriate behaviour relevant to that society. Informal rules using the same norms and values specifies behaviour for certain situations and suggests how to behave overall. However, the small minority within the law, capitalists, determines value consensus rules for the majority, workers. It could be argued this is unfair, workers are unable to contribute to laws. Functionalism is based on meritocracy, suggesting inequality of wealth and power is normal, the most deserving should be rewarded as individuals have equal opportunities of progression providing they work hard. However, it fails to take into account that some are more likely to accomplish success than others. It could be suggested people who have access to economic resources have greater chances (Taylor, 1997). Functionalism consider behaviour to be deterministic, it does not look at what motivates behaviour rather it is the effect of something that causes it, which if controlled stops bad behaviour Durkheim believes society growth breaks solidarity as weakened authority and morals arise when people become independent and stop relying on each other. This causes anomie, a feeling of normlessness which can develop into deviance (Taylor, 1997). However, Durkheim considers crime a valuable commodity as punishment demonstrates authority. This controls behaviour whilst also strengthening societys power, although excess crime reflects society breakdowns (Haralambos, 2008). However, Livesey (2005) argues that a perfect functionalist society would not need to change. Merton thought society was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Politics of Caesar Augustus Essays The Politics of Caesar Augustus In 31BC Augustus won the battle of Actium against his former colleague in the triumvirate, but now bitter rival, Antony and the queen of Egypt, Cleopatra, after having been in the triumvirate since 43BC. This immediately faced him with a grating predicament; he now sought to fit his own position, as sole remaining member of the triumvirate, with the old republican system. He had several problems, one of which was that all through the civil war with Antony he had portrayed Antony to be a tyrant and a ruthless man who wanted to rule Rome for himself, as a dictator. This was potentially what he had now become, and so he had several possibilities; to retire, which could lead to another civil war, and he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the other hand he didn t want to look like he had a military dictatorship because this would have angered traditional republicans. He solves this problem by placing friends of his in command of forces and limited their tenure to two years, so restrictions the threats that these frontier garrisons pose to Rome. We can see here that he is charming the hearts of the people by buying, out of his own pocket and from the spoils of war, land for the soldiers that have fought for him in the civil war, also representing the lack of requiring of an army, and so marketing the peace, and also isolating himself from the way in which Julius Caesar gained his power (marching an army upon Rome). This is cutting down of legions from 60 to 28 is also an obvious sign of peace for Rome. We can learn a lot about the first emperor of Rome from Suetonius The Twelve Caesars. In book 18 we can learn that Augustus wanted to convey the right impression when he started, so had to be seen doing the right thing directly after the battle of Actium. It says He reduced Egypt into the form of a province; and to render it more fertile, and more capable of supplying Rome with grain, he employed his army to scour the canals. The Roman attitude towards Egypt at this time would be fairly hostile having just fought a war with them, and so Augustus made the right decision to create a Roman province that ... Strategy Over time, like any good business, Blockbuster has had to adapt their strategy to the current market conditions and needs. They have gone from Blockbuster Rewards, which requires a yearly fee to acquire points which can be used for free rentals, to Movie and Game Pass, to GameRush stores, which purchases consumer s audio and video titles, to their most recent strategy of Blockbuster Online. Due to the size of the organization, it is difficult to adjust quickly to change. This explains why it took Blockbuster nearly 5 years to respond to Netflix s online video rental strategy. Despite Blockbuster s late entry, the market seems to be responding well to Blockbuster s newest strategy. In the two years since inception, nearly 2 million customers have signed up for Blockbuster online. While this is only a fraction of Netflix s 6 million subscribers, Blockbuster offers other features that Netflix is not able to offer. A couple of these competitive advantages are four in store rentals each month along with the unlimited movie rentals via mail. This is a clever strategy by Blockbuster because it is an effort to fill their stores again in hopes that people will rent other movies, buy popcorn or snacks, or rent video games. Another competitive advantage held by Blockbuster is their plan to ship movies to customers from their stores instead of warehouses. This will drastically reduce ship times to customers which is a major complaint customers of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In my personal opinion, what makes a person memorable is how he or she has impacted your life, for better or for worse. I decided to deviate from the obvious choice of a dear family member or an especially great teacher, instead, choosing someone in my life whose impact has been recent. My friend Oniqa Urmi. Oniqa enriches the lives of those around her, understands people where others fail to, and is unforgettable to anyone who has the privilege to know her. To begin, I met Oniqa about 5 years ago during my freshman year of high school. It was our first class of Physical Education in the gym playing volleyball. After some instructions from our teacher broke the class up into partners, and surprise my partner was Oniqa. Both of us were extremely shy, quiet, and didn t talk much during the 45 minutes we spent hitting a ball back and forth. Luckily our friendship didn t with second period PE. With time we became good friends. In reality, the first day we met wasn t the start to the typical friendship. Looking back, we were an unlikely pairing that without realizing it had many similarities and experiences. Despite our somewhat awkward first encounter, the following years spent getting to know each other better I learned she was a lot more than a shy girl in my PE class. As a country we have come a long way, since Obama have passed the same sex marriage law, the LGBTQ commmunity has gone upwards as an American citizens. On the other hand, the criminal justice system seems put the LGBTQ community backwards instead of forward. There is huge amount of same sex violence in between intimate partner. Some are underreported by the police department, and some same sex couples do not report the abuse at all. It sad to see this discrimination and the lack of importance in these issue played out in America. Fitts Posners Phases of Learning Fitts Posners Phases of Learning An often quoted phrase about practice, usually to encourage children to keep working and to keep repeating the same task, is that practice makes perfect . It when we look at pupils practicing in any sport, or in any other physical activity for that matter, it is quite clear that, although they are repeating movements, in many cases they are not improving significantly. In fact, in many cases, they are not improving at all. In many cases their lack of success and achievement is de motivating and they become careless and half hearted or even angry at what they are doing because of the lack of success. I would do this because by pointing out their good points they feel happy and confident doing the skill. The associative stage begins when the learner has a greater appreciation of the form of the skill and the anticipated perceptual and sensory information involved. There will be less errors and the learner will be able to begin to focus on points that could be termed refining the technique as opposed to learning the basics. In terms of swimming this can be getting the performer to do the arm and leg/kicking action together. Once they had developed this I could think about incorporating the breathing into this. As they are still learning to put their own technique together, I would not use negative feedback still, but I would use constructive criticism, to make sure they know that they can still improve but I would do a lot of this. I think the best way to get feedback at this level would be intrinsic. By getting the feedback from the performer themselves, it is meaning that they have to think about their own performance and what was good and bad. By the autonomous stage the performance is almost automatic. The learner will not have to pay a great deal of attention to the perceptual and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
