Persuasive Essay Voting
The United States uses a voting system to allow it s citizens voice to be heard and have an influence
on politics. When a person turns 18 they are considered an adult and also gain the privilege to vote.
There is some belief that including more people in voting would benefit the nation more because it
would lead to a more accurate representation. So the article talks about different perspective on
allowing people who are 16 17 years of age to vote. People who are under the age of 18 should not be
able to vote because their unknowledgeable about how politics works, the age group has one of the
lowest voting rate, and they don t have enough perspective. So people of the age of 16 or 17 they are
not yet prepared to take on this responsibility and wouldn t be able to carry it out.
A person who is in the age group of 16 to 17 would be enrolled in the 11th or 12th grade meaning they
have not taken a government class or are currently enrolled in one. Students don t take a government
class until their senior year of highschool. People need to learn how the government works before they
are able to vote in order to make the best decision based off their political perspective. So say a person
who falls into this group is voting and filling out their paperwork they re not going to understand most
of the term or what choice is best for them. Voting is used to get statistic of what the nation wants in
politics so why let someone who doesn t know anything about politics vote if they re

Narmer Palette
The Palette of King Narmer is known as an Ancient Egyptian artifact that dates all the way back to the
pre dynastic period. The Palette made of Schist (clay) depicts the rule King Narmer. Although the
nature of this palette is still a mystery, it still has not been proven if the depictions are used for a
historical record or an essential tool of the political propaganda of Ancient Egypt. Based on the
palettes shape, size, and detailed images that are presented show that the palette was not only used for
daily and historical purposes. With a more in dept. look at the palette it s shown clear that the main
purpose of the palette was not to be used for historical records about King Narmer, but to show his
leadership as a ruler by showing his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It uncovers the meaning of hierarchy of Egyptian life. It has been proven that the art during this time
showed King Narmer as a distant figure, which shows the growing power of his dominance that led to
the theory of whether Narmer was the reason behind the unification of upper and lower Egypt.
The Narmer Palette is an elaborate formalized version of a utilitarian object that is commonly used in
the pre dynastic period to prepare eye makeup, in which Egyptians used as a source of protection
through their eyes against irritation and the glare of the sun. On the front of the palette, the elongated
necks of the two cats that are presented form a circular depression that would have held eye makeup in
an ordinary palette not made for display. The intertwined necks of the animals may be a representation
of Ancient Egypt s Unification. The Palette has been discovered in the city of Hierakonopolis located
in Egypt. The palette shows the King (Narmer) displaying his dominance over both Upper and Lower
Egypt, which raises a theory from scholars of whether or not he unified the two kingdoms of Egypt.
As the two sides of the palette shows the king depicted wearing a white crown of Upper Egypt, and on
the other side of the palette it shows the king wearing the red crown of Lower Egypt. This may be a
good argument of whether or not Narmer unified Egypt but what these two depictions do show is King
Narmers complete dominance over Ancient

Sickle Cell Disease Introduction
Introduction
The term of Sickle cell disease (SCD) describes a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. Inherited
means that it is passed by genes from parents to their children.
People who have SCD have abnormal hemoglobin in their red blood cells, called hemoglobin S. This
abnormality leads to a propensity for the cells to assume an rigid sickle cell shape. Sickle cell disease
is associated with a number of acute and chronic health problems as severe infections, severe pain,
stroke and an increased risk of death.
Also SCD is not contagious. A person can t catch it, like a cold, from someone else.
A person who has a single abnormal copy does not experience symptoms. Such people are referred to
as carriers. However, People who have this disease inherit two abnormal hemoglobin genes, one from
each parent. One of the two abnormal genes causes a person s body to make hemoglobin S. When a
patient has two hemoglobin S genes, Hemoglobin SS, the disease is called sickle cell anemia. This is
the most common and most severe kind of SCD.
Hemoglobin SC disease and hemoglobin Sβ thalassemia are other major forms of SCD.
The complications of the disease can be prevented with vaccination, antibiotics, blood transfusion, and

In people homozygous for HgbS, the presence of long chain polymers of HbS change the shape of the
red blood cell from a doughnut like shape to ragged and full of spikes, making it fragile and

mountain or while severely dehydrated. The disease occurs when the glutamic acid is replaced by
valine to change its structure and function; sickle cell anemia is also known as E6V. Valine is
hydrophobic amino acid , which causes the haemoglobin to collapse on itself occasionally. When
enough haemoglobin collapses on itself the RBC become

Kindergarten Vocabulary Instruction
Kindergarten Vocabulary: A Literature Review of Effective Instruction
Introduction
When students enter into the kindergarten classroom, they are greeted with a plethora of new
knowledge that they may have previously not had exposure, such as phonics, phonemic awareness,
fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. Within these, vocabulary is often a major struggle for many
children in kindergarten. Young children are often exposed to vocabulary through conversations, but
not in a manner of teaching it explicitly. Through this literature review it was my goal as a researcher
to find primary studies that focused on high quality instruction in the field of emergent vocabulary,
especially in the kindergarten classroom. This topic came into fruition through wanting to understand
literacy practices in kindergarten classrooms, since the implementation of Common Core State
Standards. I began the research through developing a list of key words and terms that were relevant to
my chosen topic of kindergarten vocabulary instruction. These terms included, but were not limited to
kindergarten vocabulary instruction, effective vocabulary instruction, vocabulary instruction, and
kindergarten classroom practices. Using Eagle search, Education Full Text, and Google Scholar I was
able to find four pertinent studies using the key term kindergarten vocabulary instruction . After
reading the abstracts of these four studies, I changed the key terms and searched emergent vocabulary

Like-A-Girl Campaign
I am very familiar with P G s Always Like a Girl campaign. I remember watching that commercial
and acknowledging the greatness behind it. As a tomboy growing up, I was always at the receiving
end of jokes because I was not girly enough; this campaign s initial interpretation of stereotypical
responses regarding girls was eye opening. Seriously, when did being a girl become an insult? My
daughter was in high school when this campaign was published. Even my teenager, the star basketball
player, acknowledged the importance of this campaign because she worked with young girls in the
summer and always told them they could be anything they wanted to be because being a girl did not

Of course, the feminine care product brand is not without challenges. In an industry where there is
clear competition, creating a sustainable marketing plan is essential. The Always brand brought about

Eyeshadow Persuasive Essay
Purple eyeshadow offers the makeup aficionado lots of options. From smokey matte shades to glittery
standout tones, there are lots of purple shadows to choose from. With plenty of types to choose from,
it can be a staple color in your makeup bag.
How to choose eyeshadow?
Several ways to choose an eyeshadow exist. First, you can select an eyeshadow based on your skin
tone. (In fact, this is a way to choose your whole makeup palette.) If you go this route, select colors
that don t make you look washed out. Try a little color on the inside of your wrist. Neutral colors
flatter warmer skin tones, whereas silver, blue, or purple eyeshadows work better on cool skin tones.
You can also choose your eyeshadow and makeup based on when you re going to wear it. For
example, those who like purple eyeshadow should get soft, muted tones like lilac or mauve for
daytime wear. Save the smokey violet pigment palettes for nighttime. Same goes for choosing liners.
Heavier liners in darker colors should be saved for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cool toned eyeshadows with a bit of shimmer are more appropriate for nighttime.
What s the difference between eyeshadow and eyeliner?
Both of these types of makeup are applied to the lids of the eye. It s where they are applied (and their
consistency) that sets them apart, generally speaking. Eyeliner is painted around the lash line. Some
people prefer to wear it on only one lid (top or bottom), while others like to wear it on both.
Eyeshadow is mostly worn on the the upper lid and can extend from the lashes to the eyebrows.
Typically, shades in the darker palettes like deep purples, dark browns, rich burgundies, and the like
are placed in the crease of the lid as well as close to the edges and sometimes under the eyes. Lighter
tones work better up toward the brow bone.
Companies like Maybelline, L Oreal, and ColourPop all carry different types of eye

Description Of The Image Of God
Description of the Image of God
Imago Dei which is Latin for the Image of God. In Genesis 1: 27 So God created mankind in his own
image... In the beginning it was Gods intent for mankind to posses the image of God as a part of His
creation. However, due to the fall of man into sin this image of God has been corrupted from its
original state and intent from what God intended it to be. In Genesis 9:6 Whoever sheds human blood,
by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind. Is an example
that the image of God still existed even after the fall of mankind into sin. John Calvin believed this to
be true in his theology according to John S. Hammet Calvin saw the image not as totally erased but
hideously distorted and deformed. This concept is what Calvin described as Total Depravity,
nevertheless, the image of God was not lost just distorted, and can be restored through the atoning
sacrifice of Jesus Christ if one chooses to believe in Him. The New Testament affirms that Jesus
Christ was sacrificed to cover our sins so that we can be righteous in Him through His image. The
apostle Paul wrote in Colossians 3:9 10 since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and
have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the one
who created him. In this short but powerful passage Paul tells us to restore the image of God within us
which can now be accomplished because of what Jesus

Monteverdi Italian Opera Comparison
Italian opera is the term used to describe compositions of opera composed in Italy or the term used to
describe compositions of opera which use the Italian language. Italian opera first found its foothold
around the beginning of the seventeenth century through composers such as Jacopo Peri with his
composition Dafne which was one of the first compositions to be considered an opera. Among the
many composers who brought opera to fame within the musical world, Claudio Monteverdi and
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were two of the most prominent composers of Italian opera. Although
Monteverdi and Mozart were composing Italian operas over a hundred and fifty years apart from each
other, their operas contained many similar characteristics. In this essay, Monteverdi s Italian opera L

This can be seen in Eurydice s piece in bars 257 259 of Act Four shown below in Example 2.
Monteverdi uses this compositional technique within this opera in order to effectively and efficiently

specific point the play, Eurydice is speaking of times and people who are sweet to her therefore
Monteverdi s use of a high pitched and sustained notes contributes and enables the singer of Eurydice
to effectively portray the character s thoughts to the audience.
Another musical characteristic of Monteverdi s Italian operas is that he follows the traditional opera
structure of four to five acts. Within L Orfeo , Monteverdi composes the story within five acts. This

The Labor Market
Introduction The landscape of the labor market is a critical factor in the economic comparison of
different countries. Countries with a friendly job market are economically stronger because such an
economy is able to achieve high living standards for its citizens. This paper therefore endeavors to
explore some of the trends in the labor market in the US, EU, Japan and China Unemployment Rates
As per August 2016 the unemployment rate was reported to be at 4.9% percent by the Bureau of Labor
Statistics and this is the first time the unemployment rate fell below 5% since 2008. However, despite
the fall in unemployment rates it is worth considering that only a few of the adults are working. Only
62.7% of the adult Americans are working and this has been so since the late 1970s.n On the other
hand, the unemployment rate in the EU was rated at 10.2% in April which is the lowest rate since
2011. In the EU, Greece is by far the country with the highest unemployment rate of 23.3%
particularly due to its economic meltdown. On the other hand Malta and Germany have recorded the
lowest unemployment rates in 2016 of about 4%. In Asia, the unemployment rate in China by June
2016 was rated to be 4.05%. In the first half of 2016, 7.17 million jobs were created in the majority of
the Chinese urban cities therefore accounting for 71.7% of China s yearly target of 10 million jobs. In

Performance Appraisal- Management Procedure
Performance appraisals are an essential element of the general performance management procedure. A
performance management structure involves having an appraisal technique or method, substantiated
by job types, colloquial and continuous feedback, leadership training, performance expectations,
punitive policies, as well as employee productivity and acknowledgement. In addition, both positive
and negative feedback are elements that are instrumental in the arena of performance management.
However, the paramount cause of performance appraisal efficiency as well as effectiveness is how
well each of these elements correlates with one another. Performance appraisal is the procedure
through which employee performance is evaluated, feedback is delivered, and development plans are
designed (Youssef, 2012). Therefore, strategic Human Resource Management (HRM) is vital to
successful organizational objectives. While the core objective of performance appraisals is the
evaluation of employees work performance, organizations utilize performance appraisals for a variety
of goals; these include managing salaries, wages, and pay incentives and adjustments. In addition
performance appraisals can be performed by management to establish job placement decisions, and to
validate employee punitive decisions (Youssef, 2012). Performance appraisal is made up of several
components. Youssef states... A holistic approach to performance appraisal means viewing
performance as a multidimensional system of

Comparison of the Protagonists in Juno and Catcher in the Rye
The main protagonists Juno and Holden of movie Juno and the book Catcher in the Rye, have main
thing in common, they have not yet accepted the fact they play a role in society, communicating with
the people around them, and with their families. Where they differ is in the problems they face. Juno s
main problem is that she becomes pregnant at a young age which is considered to be a life changing
event by societal standards. The main source of Holden s problems comes from result of the death of
his little brother Allie who had Leukemia and his inability to cope with it. Despite many differences
that the main protagonists have, it is true to say that both Juno and Holden go through times of
struggle. Although it is clear that the main characters struggle more than the average teenager,
ultimately both the novel and movie outlines what occurs to teenagers going through a phase in their
lives. Both Holden and Juno suffer through psychological struggles while they try to figure out what
they want in life. In both the movie and the book both characters try to be as original as possible,
however this leads to the characters isolating themselves from society and the people around them.
Holden tries to be the most authentic person he can be while calling all the people that don t share his

How Does Markel Seek Clarity For A Problem
Without a clear statement of your problem or opportunity, you cannot plan your research. (pg.316)
According to this statement Markel looks at identifying a problem that a company faces with its
workers. However in any case either workers, equipment, malfunctions and a nation one should seek
clarity for a problem. Just as politicians do when running for election they seek the problems that the
country faces and society and uses that as their nuclear weapon for running for presidency. This is how
they target race, obtaining high votes. This reminds me of coming down to a decision for choosing a

He also states that choosing another that may affect both options one have concluded with. I believe
many persons that hoards have this problem they never know when to use their good judgment to get
rid of old, small or torn clothing instead they keep it. Also some persons does the same with
equipment, maintenance of homes and mechanics especially hoard rather than using a best course of
action. To find the best course of action one must gain knowledge of the problem, then discover
options of fixing the problem. This options may include expenses, the severity of the problem, day to
day activities, and the long term effects of the problem. It is always important to determine the best
solution to save one from future expenses and setbacks. As an athlete I always use my good judgment

Assignment on Cognitive Dissonance
Theory Paper on Cognitive Dissonance Theory
Sometimes people hold a core belief that is very strong. When they are presented with evidence that
works against that belief, the new evidence cannot be accepted. It would create a feeling that is
extremely uncomfortable, called cognitive dissonance. And because it is so important to protect the
core belief, they will rationalize, ignore and even deny anything that doesn t fit in with the core belief.
― Frantz Fanon, Black Skin, White Masks (1)

However, still he carries on with an unhealthy lifestyle of eating oily food, drinking excessive alcohol
and smoking with no exercise. This is where a dissonance arises in his thoughts and the corresponding
actions. Moreover, he also tends to avoid speaking on such issues with his family or the doctor in
order to continue the same way as he has been in order to reduce the dissonance caused by such
advices given to him.

Post decision dissonance reduction
This concept talks about how one would want to reduce the dissonance created in their mind once a
decision has already been taken. For example, lets say I purchase a piece of land somewhere in an
unknown place outside my home turf. Now, since I found the offer lucrative, I did not research much
on the cost to benefit analysis, the return on investment or the legal hassles related to the illegal land
grabbing in that area and this is creating a dissonance in my mind. In order to reduce the dissonance I
would speak to people residing in that area or those who know about the business conditions
prevailing in that area or some property experts in order to reassure myself that I made the right
decision. This process will in effect reduce the dissonance created after the purchase.
Criticism: The setback which has been observed about this theory at times is that the theory uses a
very small set of sample size while proposing a factual observation. However, a better way of ensuring

Analysis Of The Book Georgia Odyssey By James C. Cobb
Written by James C. Cobb, a distinguished history professor at the University of Georgia named B.
Phinizy Spalding, Georgia Odyssey is a revolutionary book covering the state of Georgia from its
humble beginnings as a colony in 1732 to the beginning of a new millennium in 2000. The book
discusses James Oglethorpe s original intentions for the colony, then through the ugly side beginning
in 1751, when slaves were permitted into the colony. Slavery directly impacted the ever developing
definition of American freedom, which is what Cobb conveys throughout the entire book. Personally, I
had not given much thought to the reason of Georgia s success as a state was because of the
phenomenon of slavery. The acclaimed book begins with Georgia beginning as a dry and modest
colony. As the years pass, these ideals and morals are changed to desiring more than a hardworking
farmer. The people of Georgia desired to have slaves. Therefore, Georgia changed and started a path to
become identical to South Carolina. However, as the amount of plantations sky rocketed, so did the
need for more slaves. It is a marvel to imagine that I live in the city of Savannah that was a beacon for
the selling and exchanging of human beings. The ugly history of success does not end when slavery is
outlawed in 1865. Racism was still very much alive in the South. Jim Crow laws were instated in an
effort to halt the freedoms of Black Americans, until they were done away with. Skipping ahead to the

The Laffer Curve And Its Effect On The People
Introduction
The point Arthur Laffer made when he brought up what later became the Laffer curve was that
government implementations have both short and long term impacts on the people, and that those
impacts are directly dependent on incentives: positive or negative. In their most primal forms, positive
incentives would be subsidies and negative incentives would be taxes. The Laffer curve, although very
hard to accurately estimate, is very powerful in its shape. The understanding of its shape is crucial for
policymakers, but also a headache as its parameters are extremely difficult to comprehend and model
properly.

Dr. Arthur Betz Laffer is an American economist who gained prominence during the Reagan
administration for his theory on how tax rates affect the total revenues collected by the government. In
the above quote, Dr. Arthur Laffer explains that increase in government revenue is not the true
measure of a growing economy. A prosperous economy is one in which people have more income,
more growth and more employment opportunities.
Dr. Arthur Laffer was born in Youngstown, Ohio on August 14, 1940 to Amelia and William Gillespie.
Both of his parents had an educational background in economics and this motivated him to pursue a
career in it. Before going to Yale University to earn a B.A. in Economics, Dr. Laffer went to
University of Munich and was majoring in Mathematics, but later he changed his major to economics.
In order to further satiate his interest, he did his MBA and got a full scholarship to do his PhD in
economics at the Economics school of Stanford University.
In 1967, he accepted the offer from the University of Chicago to join as a faculty member. Dr. Laffer
was eager to work alongside Robert Mundell, who was already part of the school s faculty and was

When asked to define a leader, most would define one by naming traits such as self confidence,
ambition, and determination. Although these are great qualities, this does not define a leader. A leader
is someone in a position of authority who has ability to influence a group through effective

Exile In Disney Film
A fairly frequent, if not oft considered, theme of Disney films is exile. Simba in The Lion King, Mike
and Sully in Monsters, Inc., Elsa in Frozen, Will and Elizabeth in Pirates of the Caribbean, the list
goes on and on. Whether self initiated or forced, all of these characters face exile at some point in their
stories. Battling isolation, self loathing, and identity crises, however, these characters also experience
an awakening of sorts. In the true Disney way, from the source of their sorrow springs strength and
illumination. Though in a much darker setting, Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness also explores exile

Europe has inflicted upon the Congo. Unbound by friendships or any close ties, Marlow is able to

the chaotic violence the Europeans perpetuate. Though his distaste for European methods is not

Perhaps, then, the heart of darkness that Marlow so frequently says he is journeying into is not the
jungle itself, but rather the truth about European brutality. At the core of this heart, both physically and
symbolically, lies the Inner Station, where Marlow finds Kurtz. When Marlow first hears about Kurtz,

Theme Of Jealousy In Othello
Jealousy. The fuel for destruction.
Throughout Oliver Parker s 1995 film Othello , jealousy is apparent. Parker displays the possessive
theme of jealousy throughout the entirety of the film while also demonstrating how it may also lead to
acts of revenge; being another vital theme in Othello . The tragedy Othello focuses on the catastrophe
of Othello and many other characters in the film as a result of jealousy.
I was fortunate enough to sit down with the well renowned director, Oliver Parker, to discuss his film
adaptations of William Shakespeare s tragic play, Othello as well as the dangers of Jealousy in his film
on certain characters.
Mr. Parker, your film has been critiqued for focusing so heavily on jealousy. How did you manage to
portray the idea of jealousy as a theme in your film?
I have represented jealousy in the film, as one of the most corrupting and destructive theme. It is
jealousy that encourages Iago to scheme Othello s downfall. Through the juxtaposition of Othello s
naive nature and Iago s spiteful villainy, the image of jealousy is truly personified as an all consuming
green eyed monster .
Other characters such as, Roderigo and Bianca demonstrate jealousy at various times in the film, and
Emilia demonstrates that she too knows the emotion well. Only Desdemona and Cassio, the true
innocents of the story, seem beyond its clutches.
Since it is an emotion that everyone shares, we watch its destructive influence on the characters with
sympathy and horror.
The final scenes are significant and essential in conveying jealousy as they show the consequences
and horrific outcome it has had on many characters. A number of characters are killed because of
jealousy consequently making it one of the most destructive themes in the film.
The theme of jealousy is clearly prominent throughout the film as it influences the characters actions.
The major characters of Iago and Othello clearly possess this jealousy and express how it affects them.
Iago is forced to expose his actual nature and Othello undergoes a total transformation from a normal
human to a spiteful monster. Evidently, jealousy does cause people to change in horrific ways.
How have you used the characters throughout the

Sturge-Weber Syndrome Research Paper
Sturge Weber Syndrome Kris Avila 08/30/2015 NURSPT 030L Mrs. B Abstract According to the
Sturge Weber Foundations, Sturge Weber Syndrome can be diagnosed once the baby is born. With the
most obvious characteristics, the baby will have a dark purple birthmark that covers close to half of
his/her face. Another symptom from Sturge Weber Syndrome is that it can cause neurological
deformity. Both of these symptoms are caused by the abnormal blood vessels near the eye and on the
surface of the brain. Studies have shown that this syndrome is not passed from family history, but the
only remedy we can do is to suppress it (Sturge Weber.org). One of the most amazing miracles in life

The only way to cope with the disease is to control it and improving the person s lifestyle. (Moore,
2012). Pinpointing what kind of symptoms and category of Sturge Weber Syndrome the person has, an
MD can figure out what types of remedies are available. There are many different types of
pharmacologic treatments for seizures. Most of the seizures from the disease are located only on one
side of the brain s hemisphere. Some of the medications include Carbamazepine, Phenytoin,
Oxcarbazepine, Lamotrigine, Levetiracetam, Valproic Acid, Zonisamide, Topiramate, Lorazepam,
Phenobarbital, Gabapentin, Pregabalin, Tiagabine, Diazepam, Felbamate, Lacosamide, and
Clonazepam. With the seizures being controlled with medications, it helped prevent future seizures
from 10% to 50%. Besides medications, there are also surgical treatments available as well. Early
surgery for patients with Sturge Weber Syndrome is to improve and prevent developmental delay,
refractory seizures, and hemiparesis. Lobectomy and craniotomy were recommended once being
diagnosed with the disease because doctors have found that early onsets of seizures can lead towards
mental retardatation. A procedure called hemispherectomy is also recommended to be given when a
unilateral epileptogenic region exist. This procedure is also done while the patient is still young. It is
preferable because the epileptogenic region is smaller. Studies have shown

others overly blunt, it made my eyes hurt. The one thing they all had in common, they made a

others taking the viewer away to another time. One thing is true, art makes you think, art is made up of

Nude on Black Screen is composed out of oil on screen canvas. This is a beautiful image of a woman,
dancing, embracing herself and her womanhood. This image is a very good example of modern day
version of women s liberation. Constructed in very intense white, which is extremely eye catching
against the black of the projection screen. The lines are a somewhat thick line, running in a horizontal
direction, running parallel to the line above and appear to have a curve or wave to them, as they flow
to form a cylinder like, 3 D visual of the woman s body. The viewer will notice that the image is fairly
accurate in showing the curves of the woman herself; it shows roundness in the breast, abdomen, hips
and rear. It also shows off other womanly features like hair, hands and soft facial features. Even
though the viewer is unable to see the expression on the woman s face, it is easy to feel and interpret
the feeling behind this image. As the lines form this 3 D visual, they also form the texture of the
image. The lines allow the viewer to feel as if they are able to reach out and touch a tangible image.
The woman s body is placed off to the right side of the projection screen, but a portion of her lower
left leg, and her long, flowing arm is extended to help balance out the image. With the concepts that
Stanley Helms used, makes this piece full of traditional art ideas. Allowing a person viewing any form
of artwork to think deeper, art is made up of all sorts of methods, and art is

Edgar Allen Poe s The Black Cat
In the short story, The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe, the narrator details a series of violent actions
against both his pet cat and wife. The transformation of the narrator is revealed by his out of character
behavior brought on by his alcohol abuse. The narrator s diction, point of view, and tone help unravel
his transition into insanity and indulgence into his perverse nature.
In this story, the narrator begins by saying he considers himself to be a perfectly normal person,

animals and growing up he was able to have many different kinds of pets. When he became an adult

Inquisitions In Octavia Butler s The Parable Of The Talents
Beginning in the 12th century, in the middle of the Medieval era, just centuries after the fall of the
greatest empire of classical history, the Roman Empire, with the invasion of religious frustration swept
across much of Europe. These various inquisitions caused a quake of fear for anyone that was
suspected of betraying the Catholic Church and the Vatican. Though it was not just religious heresy
and other religious groups, it was also Pagans, Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Atheists, Freethinkers,
Philosophers, Humanists, and many others. Burning them at the stake, and accusing them of heresy,
sending them to trial, and inevitably their death. These various inquisitions of and the protestant
reformation were known as one of humanities darkest events in history. People lived in fear of
accusation, death, and the ways of this era; the world was living in a shadow of fear, thousands dying
by knife, ax, and fire. Over the course of 500 years, religious conflict was really a widespread issue
and yet tolerated by many. There are many similarities between Octavia Butler s book, The Parable of
the Talents and the various inquisitions of human history, and through the persecution and
conversation, of religious groups, the religious chaos on this time, and how Lauren s character is
similar to other religious icons during these times there is evidence that Butler s novel could be an
inquisition.

Montaigne s Own Unorthodox Childhood Education
Montaigne s own unorthodox childhood education played a role in shaping the way he thought about
learning and about life. He spent his infancy in the countryside, his childhood immersed in Latin, and
his adolescence in classes with older students at the Collège de Guyenne. Because of his father s
nontraditional ideas about education, as Bakewell states, Montaigne grew up to be an independent
minded adult, following his own path in everything rather than deferring to duty and discipline (55).
He was a man who thought differently about the world around him and was comfortable with and
successful in writing not only about something different, himself, but in a way that had never been
done before, the personal essay. Montaigne s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The minds of students are like white paper, or wax, to be moulded and fashioned as one pleases
(Locke 179). Montaigne also explains this paradigm using a parallel simile in The Essays: Teachers
are for ever bawling into our ears as though pouring knowledge down through a funnel: our task is
merely to repeat what we have been told (169). In the traditional model, students simply have to
commit information to memory and be able to recite it on command.
In Montaigne s time, students would study classical texts and learn from institutions like the church.
The idea of being well educated meant you were able to recite the knowledge of the ancients in
writing and conversation. Montaigne was familiar with this method of learning and experienced this
pedagogy during his more structured educational years at the Collège de Guyenne. His exposure to
this model is evident because of the time period in which he attended institutions of learning, and is
also suggested by his own extensive reading of classical texts and the smattering of quotes from those
like Plato and Aristotle throughout The Essays, yet Montaigne claims that this concept of knowledge
is of little use. He contends that students of this method are not nourished and fed by what they learn:
the learning is passed from hand to hand with only one end in view: to show it off [...] having no other
use or currency (154). In short, students are not actually learning anything under this

William Shakespeare s Sonnet 64
Sonnets hold more detail and depth than can be easily noted in a first reading. Due to their strict
structure and short length, a lot of thought must be put into the words chosen by the poets. Edmund
Spenser and William Shakespeare exemplify the idea of sonnet diction being a vital part of the poem.
This is especially true in the cases of Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 and Spenser s Sonnet 64. Both sonnets
feature a strong focus on a female beloved and her appearance. The two authors have different
approaches in how they describe her looks, but the overall structure of the sonnets are very similar. In
both cases, each word in the two sonnets means something more than the word alone first implies. It is
not hard to see that Spenser in Sonnet 64 is deeply in love with his beloved and greatly admires her
physical appearance. At first glance, one might think that Shakespeare in Sonnet 130 does not seem to
think his beloved beautiful since he lists off all the things that are not beautiful about her. However,
the beloved is admired by them both, simply in different ways. Spenser idealizes his beloved by
comparing her to beautiful and natural things and by using smell to describe her beauty. Shakespeare,
on the other hand, does not idealize his beloved; instead, he is honest about her, which may appear as
a negative description, but is actually also describing how much he admires her. Despite these things,
there is something to the way Shakespeare describes his beloved that is very

A Separate Peace Analysis
A Separate Peace by John Knowles follow the late high school experience of two high school boys,
Gene Forrester and his best friend Phineas, in the midst of WWII. This coming of age novel explores
the impact of WWII on those who were aware of the war, yet not fully involved in it. While the war
affects all those in the school, its effects are most visible in the mind of Gene. Much of the actions of
the main characters can be described in a quote by Eric Burdon, that Inside each of us, there is a seed
of both good and evil. It s a constant struggle as to which one will win. And one cannot exist without
the other . Gene s fluctuations between friend and foe, as well as Phineas disposition and untimely
death both reflect the ideas of the quote, and while the actions of other main characters do not
necessarily conform to the same standards, the quote accurately reflects the novel.
In A Separate Peace nowhere is the struggle between good and evil more obvious than it is in Gene
Forrester, as he switches between antagonism and friendliness throughout the novel. This conflict
within is displayed when Gene visits Finny to admit his guilt, telling him I jounced the limb. I caused
it.... I deliberately jounced the limb so that you would fall off (70). This display of honesty and
friendship is tainted by the realization that Gene tried, and succeeded, in harming his friend. While
Gene at some points wants to hate Finny, he likes him too much to ever truly give up on him, showing

Scott Fitzgerald s need to challenge the very idea of it. As the reader discovers throughout the text, the
notion that the American Dream is realistic and attainable is skewed, and it is even less likely to be

brave to be publicly open about. A member of the Lost Generation works by Fitzgerald, such as
Tender is the Night, provide valuable insight into the inner workings of public values from the 1920s.
This openness is exceptional and elevates the novel from a fictional story to a window of time, making
it even more unique and appreciable. Although poorly received at the time of its publication in 1934,

Women In The Progressive Era
The Gilded age was a time of economic growth as the United States rapidly jumped to the lead in
industrialization, ahead of Britain. The nation was expanding/increasing its economy into new areas,

period of widespread social activism and political reform all throughout the United States. The main
goals of the Progressive Movement were eliminating issues caused by industrialization, immigration,
urbanization, and corruption in government. Many individuals who supported the Progressive

Skinny Jeans In The 1950 s
Do you own any pairs of skinny jeans? Do you want to own skinny jeans? Can you fit into skinny
jeans? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you may have a serious disorder from love
of skinny jeans. Skinny jeans are a form fitting, thigh hugging, narrow legged type of jeans. Now let s
go back time, all the way back to the 1950 s. The term skinny jeans was invented first in the 1800 s by
Levi Strauss. Skinny jeans were another term for a kind of jeans, like Levi s slim fit jeans. Over 100
years later, the brand Levi the name taken from the real jean inventor reinvented the skinny jeans in
the 1950 s. After the reinvented jeans by Levi, skinny jeans were really introduced to the world in old
movies, usually old Western movies. Actors like Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, Marilyn Monroe, and

The Forest Service Trail Stewardship Act Of 2015 Essay
For the purpose of this assignment, I am going to discuss the Forest Service Trail Stewardship Act of
2015, H.R. 845 (the Horse, 2016). The bill was introduced on April 29, 2015 by Cynthia Lummis
member of the Republican Party, representing the state of Wyoming and Tim Walz member of the

The bill was then sponsored by BCHA and members of The Wilderness Society and American Horse
Council (Back Country Horsemen of America, 2016). The purpose of the bill was to direct the Forest
Service to take serval actions regarding trial maintenance backlog that was adversely affecting all trail
users on many National Forests at that time, including equestrians (the Horse, 2016, American Horse
Council, 2016). The bill would promote volunteerism in the service of National Forest trails (Back

support for work worthy teens, this problem is certainly solvable. For teenagers it is difficult to get a

One of these reasons is that there needs to be an adult to support and help organize the sale. However,
it is quite easy get that kind of help. If parents let their teen or teens work on the sale, then a few of
them probably would also agree to help run it. Also, some people might think that the teens working
would not be serious and be irresponsible. Though really, why would teens even to participate in the

working when they could of been spending their time having fun somewhere else. So even though it

New England Vs Chesapeake Essay
A Comparison of the New England and Chesapeake Bay Regions
Amid the 1700 s, individuals in the American provinces lived in exceptionally unmistakable social
orders. While a few homesteaders drove hard lives, others were solid and prosperous. The two
gatherings who demonstrated these distinctions were the pilgrims of the New England and
Chesapeake Bay zones. The separating qualities among the Chesapeake and New England settlements
created because of economy, religion, and thought processes in frontier extension. The pilgrims of the
New England territory had an exceptionally glad and sound life. This high method for living was
expected to some extent to better cultivating, a healthier situation, and a high rate of generation in

The populace of the Chesapeake Bay area confronted intestinal sickness, typhoid, and looseness of the
bowels. Thus, almost 50% of the populace did not live to see their twentieth birthday, and even less
lived to age into their forties. The pilgrims of the Chesapeake Bay were generally male, with a
proportion of six guys to one female. Men needed to contend with each other for ladies. Families were
both few and powerless in the Chesapeake Bay environment. Barely any youngsters came to
adulthood with simply the consideration of their two folks and nobody knew a grandparent. The
definite inverse happened in the New England range as in the Chesapeake region. In New England,
hopeful atmospheres, clean water, and pipes helped keep the spread of illness. Accordingly, it was not
bizarre for New Englanders to live to the age of seventy. The pioneers who came to New England
moved to the New World with their families, permitting the family to stay in politeness and remain the
focal point of New England life. The ways of life of the two districts contrasted monstrously. Life in
New England very much surpassed life in the Chesapeake Bay in each

Abraham Lincoln is widely renounced as one of the greatest presidents of all time. He was a dutiful
commander in chief during a time of American civil war and accomplished more than anyone
expected. The most memorable being the Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln issued this document
that freed black enslaved persons and allowed them to fight for the union. During his presidency, he
also signed into law included the Homestead Act, the Morrill Act, the National Banking Act, and a bill
that chartered the first transcontinental railroad. The ripples of his impact are still felt today and will
be felt for many many more years to come. More so, Lincoln s sudden and tragic end to his presidency
makes his accomplishments even more memorable. Lincoln ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

On the night of April 14, 1865, Lincoln was visiting Ford Theatre in Washington, D.C. with his wife.
He sat in the balcony to watch the play the cast was putting on. Just five days previous General Robert
E. Lee had surrendered his army in Virginia, essentially ending the civil war. The celebration didn t
last long however. Lincoln was unaware of the conspiracy to assassinate him led by John Wilkes
Booth that had been in the works for sometime. When Lincoln stepped foot into the theatre that night
his fate was sealed. Boothe snuck up to the private balcony where the president sat and fired a single
.45 caliber round into the back of the 16th president s head. Boothe managed to escape the theatre and
a massive manhunt ensued. President Lincoln died the next morning. Everyone who had once been
overjoyed by the news of the surrender in Virginia was now devastated by the loss of the commander
in chief. The nation mourned. Boothe was killed on April 26th. The shock of the victory then the
unexpected loss of the adorned president it what makes him so memorable. He paved the road for
freedom of enslaved persons and pulled a nation together again. Abraham Lincoln is widely

How To Read As A Symbol Of Ignorance
To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark (Victor Hugo). As
Sherman Alexie discovers reading, the passion for it grows, and saves his life from the misery around
him. Frederick Douglass, who frees himself by pursuing the flame that starts with the first word he
reads. And William Stafford sets flame to books in his poem, unwritten books of ignorance. Reading
makes a person realize one s position in society, defy it and the ignorance of the world, it
complements with writing, as the one does not exist without the other, making one ignorant until both
have been learned. As a young boy, Sherman Alexie defies stereotypes about Indians and reads from
passion and to save his life, until becoming a well known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the poem, Stafford depicts books as a symbol of ignorance and believes they should be burnt as he
writes a verse of imagery about them turning to ashes. However he mostly judges people for not
writing anymore and finds it disturbing to see whole libraries that no one got around to writing. The
poem interests the reader mostly because of the time during which it was written: 1987. This was
during the Cold War, a time of tension between the USA and Russia, who begin to build nuclear
weapons to destroy one another. During this time, people show more interest in knowing what is going
on in the news, rather than spending their time writing books, meaning that not as many books were
being written. Also, a part of the books that were made were from the government who used
propaganda. This demonstrates how the time period has a big impact on the opinion of writers. In this
case, William Stafford wants to burn propaganda books which he interprets as ignorant because they
do not always show the truth and wants to encourage people to write smart texts that contribute to

Technology vs Organic Essay example
Humanity s timeline illustrates the past, present and future of human beings; commencing nearly
200,000 years ago when Homo sapiens first diverged from its ancestors (Evans,1998). For the next
188,000 years humans were content to forge and live within the constructs of a hunter gatherer
societal organization. Approximately 12,000 years ago agricultural systems began appearing in
various places around the world. An astonishingly short period of time later the Agricultural
Revolution transformed human ecology, social organization, demography, culture, and religion
(Fagan: 2007). Man wholeheartedly embraced the sweeping changes bought on by agriculture and
domestication, which definitely proved key to the long run success of agriculture and ... Show more

The pronounced change from hunting and gathering to agriculture and domestication can be
simplistically designated the Agricultural or Neolithic Revolution (Pringle:1998). The catalytic
developments of the Neolithic Revolution mark a major turning point in the history of humankind.
The resulting animal and plant domestication established the foundation on which modern civilization
was built. Agriculture is a uniquely human activity and is perhaps the first activity for which humans
developed technology. Technology, understood as the use of farming tools and techniques, is an
indispensable component in agriculture. In the most general sense, technology permits humans to
increase the capture and efficient utilization of solar radiation that drives primary plant production that
is the basis of the human food and fiber chain (Porter, Rasmusen: 2009). The steadfast characterization
of human nature can be viewed as a historical constant, while the prevailing woes and dilemmas
facing humanity can be viewed as a contemporary variable. Similarly to an algebraic equation, clever
manipulation of the variable and constant portion can lead to discovering the value of the variable or
as in the case of humanity; it can provide valuable insight on complex problems based on the past
experiences of people who are innately

  • 2. Persuasive Essay Voting The United States uses a voting system to allow it s citizens voice to be heard and have an influence on politics. When a person turns 18 they are considered an adult and also gain the privilege to vote. There is some belief that including more people in voting would benefit the nation more because it would lead to a more accurate representation. So the article talks about different perspective on allowing people who are 16 17 years of age to vote. People who are under the age of 18 should not be able to vote because their unknowledgeable about how politics works, the age group has one of the lowest voting rate, and they don t have enough perspective. So people of the age of 16 or 17 they are not yet prepared to take on this responsibility and wouldn t be able to carry it out. A person who is in the age group of 16 to 17 would be enrolled in the 11th or 12th grade meaning they have not taken a government class or are currently enrolled in one. Students don t take a government class until their senior year of highschool. People need to learn how the government works before they are able to vote in order to make the best decision based off their political perspective. So say a person who falls into this group is voting and filling out their paperwork they re not going to understand most of the term or what choice is best for them. Voting is used to get statistic of what the nation wants in politics so why let someone who doesn t know anything about politics vote if they re ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It has been proven that the art during this time showed King Narmer as a distant figure, which shows the growing power of his dominance that led to the theory of whether Narmer was the reason behind the unification of upper and lower Egypt. The Narmer Palette is an elaborate formalized version of a utilitarian object that is commonly used in the pre dynastic period to prepare eye makeup, in which Egyptians used as a source of protection through their eyes against irritation and the glare of the sun. On the front of the palette, the elongated necks of the two cats that are presented form a circular depression that would have held eye makeup in an ordinary palette not made for display. The intertwined necks of the animals may be a representation of Ancient Egypt s Unification. The Palette has been discovered in the city of Hierakonopolis located in Egypt. The palette shows the King (Narmer) displaying his dominance over both Upper and Lower Egypt, which raises a theory from scholars of whether or not he unified the two kingdoms of Egypt. As the two sides of the palette shows the king depicted wearing a white crown of Upper Egypt, and on the other side of the palette it shows the king wearing the red crown of Lower Egypt. This may be a good argument of whether or not Narmer unified Egypt but what these two depictions do show is King Narmers complete dominance over Ancient ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Kindergarten Vocabulary Instruction Kindergarten Vocabulary: A Literature Review of Effective Instruction Introduction When students enter into the kindergarten classroom, they are greeted with a plethora of new knowledge that they may have previously not had exposure, such as phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. Within these, vocabulary is often a major struggle for many children in kindergarten. Young children are often exposed to vocabulary through conversations, but not in a manner of teaching it explicitly. Through this literature review it was my goal as a researcher to find primary studies that focused on high quality instruction in the field of emergent vocabulary, especially in the kindergarten classroom. This topic came into fruition through wanting to understand literacy practices in kindergarten classrooms, since the implementation of Common Core State Standards. I began the research through developing a list of key words and terms that were relevant to my chosen topic of kindergarten vocabulary instruction. These terms included, but were not limited to kindergarten vocabulary instruction, effective vocabulary instruction, vocabulary instruction, and kindergarten classroom practices. Using Eagle search, Education Full Text, and Google Scholar I was able to find four pertinent studies using the key term kindergarten vocabulary instruction . In the beginning it was Gods intent for mankind to posses the image of God as a part of His creation. However, due to the fall of man into sin this image of God has been corrupted from its original state and intent from what God intended it to be. In Genesis 9:6 Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind. Is an example that the image of God still existed even after the fall of mankind into sin. John Calvin believed this to be true in his theology according to John S. Hammet Calvin saw the image not as totally erased but hideously distorted and deformed. This concept is what Calvin described as Total Depravity, nevertheless, the image of God was not lost just distorted, and can be restored through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ if one chooses to believe in Him. The New Testament affirms that Jesus Christ was sacrificed to cover our sins so that we can be righteous in Him through His image. The apostle Paul wrote in Colossians 3:9 10 since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the one who created him. Phinizy Spalding, Georgia Odyssey is a revolutionary book covering the state of Georgia from its humble beginnings as a colony in 1732 to the beginning of a new millennium in 2000. The book discusses James Oglethorpe s original intentions for the colony, then through the ugly side beginning in 1751, when slaves were permitted into the colony. Slavery directly impacted the ever developing definition of American freedom, which is what Cobb conveys throughout the entire book. Personally, I had not given much thought to the reason of Georgia s success as a state was because of the phenomenon of slavery. The acclaimed book begins with Georgia beginning as a dry and modest colony. As the years pass, these ideals and morals are changed to desiring more than a hardworking farmer. The people of Georgia desired to have slaves. Therefore, Georgia changed and started a path to become identical to South Carolina. However, as the amount of plantations sky rocketed, so did the need for more slaves. • 22. Theme Of Jealousy In Othello Jealousy. The fuel for destruction. Throughout Oliver Parker s 1995 film Othello , jealousy is apparent. Parker displays the possessive theme of jealousy throughout the entirety of the film while also demonstrating how it may also lead to acts of revenge; being another vital theme in Othello . The tragedy Othello focuses on the catastrophe of Othello and many other characters in the film as a result of jealousy. I was fortunate enough to sit down with the well renowned director, Oliver Parker, to discuss his film adaptations of William Shakespeare s tragic play, Othello as well as the dangers of Jealousy in his film on certain characters. Mr. Parker, your film has been critiqued for focusing so heavily on jealousy. How did you manage to portray the idea of jealousy as a theme in your film? I have represented jealousy in the film, as one of the most corrupting and destructive theme. It is jealousy that encourages Iago to scheme Othello s downfall. Through the juxtaposition of Othello s naive nature and Iago s spiteful villainy, the image of jealousy is truly personified as an all consuming green eyed monster . Other characters such as, Roderigo and Bianca demonstrate jealousy at various times in the film, and Emilia demonstrates that she too knows the emotion well. Only Desdemona and Cassio, the true innocents of the story, seem beyond its clutches. Since it is an emotion that everyone shares, we watch its destructive influence on the characters with sympathy and horror. The final scenes are significant and essential in conveying jealousy as they show the consequences and horrific outcome it has had on many characters. A number of characters are killed because of jealousy consequently making it one of the most destructive themes in the film. The theme of jealousy is clearly prominent throughout the film as it influences the characters actions. The major characters of Iago and Othello clearly possess this jealousy and express how it affects them. Iago is forced to expose his actual nature and Othello undergoes a total transformation from a normal human to a spiteful monster. Evidently, jealousy does cause people to change in horrific ways. This is a beautiful image of a woman, dancing, embracing herself and her womanhood. This image is a very good example of modern day version of women s liberation. Constructed in very intense white, which is extremely eye catching against the black of the projection screen. The lines are a somewhat thick line, running in a horizontal direction, running parallel to the line above and appear to have a curve or wave to them, as they flow to form a cylinder like, 3 D visual of the woman s body. The viewer will notice that the image is fairly accurate in showing the curves of the woman herself; it shows roundness in the breast, abdomen, hips and rear. It also shows off other womanly features like hair, hands and soft facial features. Even though the viewer is unable to see the expression on the woman s face, it is easy to feel and interpret the feeling behind this image. As the lines form this 3 D visual, they also form the texture of the image. The lines allow the viewer to feel as if they are able to reach out and touch a tangible image. The woman s body is placed off to the right side of the projection screen, but a portion of her lower left leg, and her long, flowing arm is extended to help balance out the image. These various inquisitions caused a quake of fear for anyone that was suspected of betraying the Catholic Church and the Vatican. Though it was not just religious heresy and other religious groups, it was also Pagans, Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Atheists, Freethinkers, Philosophers, Humanists, and many others. Burning them at the stake, and accusing them of heresy, sending them to trial, and inevitably their death. He spent his infancy in the countryside, his childhood immersed in Latin, and his adolescence in classes with older students at the Collège de Guyenne. Because of his father s nontraditional ideas about education, as Bakewell states, Montaigne grew up to be an independent minded adult, following his own path in everything rather than deferring to duty and discipline (55). Montaigne also explains this paradigm using a parallel simile in The Essays: Teachers are for ever bawling into our ears as though pouring knowledge down through a funnel: our task is merely to repeat what we have been told (169). In the traditional model, students simply have to commit information to memory and be able to recite it on command. In Montaigne s time, students would study classical texts and learn from institutions like the church. The idea of being well educated meant you were able to recite the knowledge of the ancients in writing and conversation. Montaigne was familiar with this method of learning and experienced this pedagogy during his more structured educational years at the Collège de Guyenne. His exposure to this model is evident because of the time period in which he attended institutions of learning, and is also suggested by his own extensive reading of classical texts and the smattering of quotes from those like Plato and Aristotle throughout The Essays, yet Montaigne claims that this concept of knowledge is of little use. He contends that students of this method are not nourished and fed by what they learn: the learning is passed from hand to hand with only one end in view: to show it off [...] having no other use or currency (154). • 32. William Shakespeare s Sonnet 64 Sonnets hold more detail and depth than can be easily noted in a first reading. Due to their strict structure and short length, a lot of thought must be put into the words chosen by the poets. Edmund Spenser and William Shakespeare exemplify the idea of sonnet diction being a vital part of the poem. This is especially true in the cases of Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 and Spenser s Sonnet 64. Both sonnets feature a strong focus on a female beloved and her appearance. The two authors have different approaches in how they describe her looks, but the overall structure of the sonnets are very similar. In both cases, each word in the two sonnets means something more than the word alone first implies. It is not hard to see that Spenser in Sonnet 64 is deeply in love with his beloved and greatly admires her physical appearance. At first glance, one might think that Shakespeare in Sonnet 130 does not seem to think his beloved beautiful since he lists off all the things that are not beautiful about her. However, the beloved is admired by them both, simply in different ways. Spenser idealizes his beloved by comparing her to beautiful and natural things and by using smell to describe her beauty. Shakespeare, on the other hand, does not idealize his beloved; instead, he is honest about her, which may appear as a negative description, but is actually also describing how much he admires her. • 33. A Separate Peace Analysis A Separate Peace by John Knowles follow the late high school experience of two high school boys, Gene Forrester and his best friend Phineas, in the midst of WWII. This coming of age novel explores the impact of WWII on those who were aware of the war, yet not fully involved in it. While the war affects all those in the school, its effects are most visible in the mind of Gene. Much of the actions of the main characters can be described in a quote by Eric Burdon, that Inside each of us, there is a seed of both good and evil. It s a constant struggle as to which one will win. And one cannot exist without the other . Gene s fluctuations between friend and foe, as well as Phineas disposition and untimely death both reflect the ideas of the quote, and while the actions of other main characters do not necessarily conform to the same standards, the quote accurately reflects the novel. In A Separate Peace nowhere is the struggle between good and evil more obvious than it is in Gene Forrester, as he switches between antagonism and friendliness throughout the novel. This conflict within is displayed when Gene visits Finny to admit his guilt, telling him I jounced the limb. I caused it.... I deliberately jounced the limb so that you would fall off (70).
