Phillis Wheatley Analysis
Anne Bradstreet once wrote, If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not
sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome. This quote summarizes much of
what her and fellow female writer Phillis Wheatley s lives were like during their fights for social
change. Throughout their lives, these women were forced to live through challenges and injustices on
levels that are unimaginable to many of members of today s society. With the Bradstreet and Wheatley
did much to counter these challenges, even directly addressing the masses in their writings as forms of
protests. This is precisely the element of which both unites and distinguishes the two women on a very
grand scale. In Phillis Wheatley s On Being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She uses her writing to express her ideas on women being significant figures in the world, or at very
least the field of writing. She makes note of the history of writers and how strongly women have been
involved in the process for a number of years, But sure the antique Greeks were far more mild / Else
of our sex, why feigned they those nine / And poesy made Calliope s own child (Bradstreet 31
33).Bradstreet includes this line to establish the belief to her readers that women have been and should
continue to be significant figures in the world of writing and the arts. With the muses of the famed
Greeks being women and successful poets themselves, Bradstreet hopes to argue that women were
important and proficient in the trade that men laid claim to in her time. In all of her piece, Bradstreet s
main idea that she hopes to convey is that since women have been such staples in the art for so long
that it only makes sense for them to be allowed to still. While both authors write in ways that express
radical ideas for their respective time periods, they were sure to write in methods that did not serve to
be inflammatory to their largely opposing audiences. This is the point in which their differences truly
shine: their execution of this

Social Inequality in Elderly Americans
Social Inequality in Elderly Americans
Elderly people (women and men age sixty five or older) (Macionis, 2005), Have many obstacles to
face as they grow older, many of these obstacles involve social inequality. Not only do the elderly
have to learn to deal with many forms of Ageism (the stereotyping and prejudice against individuals or
groups because of their age), some also have to deal with the fact that they do not have enough
savings or pension benefits to be self supporting, for most people over sixty five, the major source of
income is social security (Macionis, 2005). This forces many elderly Americans back into the
workforce to continue to earn money to support themselves and or spouses. Although many elderly

Choosing a long term care facility can be very difficult because of incidents of abuse and/or neglect
reported against care facilities can be overwhelming. For example in Ending Elder Abuse: A family
guide , Diane Sandell lists many elder abuse incidents from her files such as: neglect of decubitis
ulcers led to infection, sepsis, gangrene, and death. Facility failed to provide necessary diabetic diet;
improper insulin administration, insulin overdose; dehydration and death. Resident left alone in chair
in shower room fell, became paralyzed from neck down. Many reports of pinching, rough handling,
slapping, yelling, threats (2000). It is believed that abuse is most likely to occur if the caregiver not
only finds the work difficult but also (1) works full time, (2) cares for young children, (3) is poor, (4)
feels little affection for the older person, (5) finds the elderly person very difficult, and (6) gets no
support or help from others (Macionis, 2005). Although there is no excuse for abusing elderly
Americans, it is still very prominent in today s society. Diane Sandell explains in Ending Elder Abuse,
that her 91 year old mother was beaten by a long term care facility employee in the middle of the night
for reasons unknown. It is stated that her mother died 6 weeks after the incident, unable to recover
mentally from the abuse (2000).
In conclusion, elderly Americans face many obstacles as they grow in age, such as ageism, workforce
discrimination, poverty,

Mrs. Wright As A Woman s Culture Of Social Isolation Essay
Mrs. Wright in Trifles, Emily in A Rose for Emily, and Mildred in The Hairy Ape exemplified a
woman s culture of social isolation. Condemned in a house alone to worry only about her wifely
duties, Mrs. Wright s husband isolated her from the community and past self. Pressured by her father,
lover, and her own fear of abandonment, Emily lived a life of isolation from love and her community.
Caused by her many years living in the higher class, Mildred felt isolated from the rest of society and
the lower class. Mrs. Wright, Miss Emily, and Mildred have all been pushed into seclusion away from
general society, in turn causing all three of women to take drastic measures to break their isolation.
The three females in Triffles, A Rose for Emily, and The Hairy Ape demonstrated the negative effect
of social isolation.
Mrs. Wright suffered from social isolation caused by her husband. When Mr. Hale suggested the
family go in with me on a party telephone, Mr. Wright defended himself by saying he only wanted
peace and quiet and seemed to not care what his wife wanted. Even when Mr. Hale explained to Mrs.
Wright the reason behind his visit was to ask about the telephone, she laughed, but then looked scared.
As if she had been conditioned to suppress her true wishes and desires, unless she wished for grief.
Without the agency and ability to reach out to the other women, Mr. Wright isolated Mrs. Wright from
potential hobbies, social groups, and activities. Before she became

Stakeholder Attitudes To Inclusion Paper
1. Introduction
Attitudes to inclusion play a pivotal role in the success of inclusion strategies in the classroom
(Graham Spandaguo, 2011; Morin, Rivard, Crocker, Boursier Caron, 2013). Successful inclusion
incorporates the student s ecological context including peers, family, school staff and the broader
community (Foreman Arthur Kelly, 2014). Since the 1990s attitudes towards inclusion have become
more positive (Morin et al., 2013). Nevertheless, negativity towards inclusion continues among
stakeholders. These negative attitudes may relate to which schools students attend, how prepared
schools and teachers are and how to adapt the curriculum to their needs. The attitudes of various
stakeholders may impact on the success of inclusion in the classroom. Therefore, stakeholder attitudes
require understanding and consideration for possible intervention strategies. Through a synthesis of
current research, three recommendations will be outlined to help various stakeholder views conform to
existing inclusion policy.
2. Discussion
2.1 Previous research
Previous research has delved into factors among demographics that might make them more or less
receptive to inclusion. From this research, inconsistencies are evident in attitudes towards inclusive
education. For example, a body of research reports negative correlations ... Show more content on

Eurasic is one of five neighboring cities remaining on the earth. Due to the significant effects of global

The Portrayal Of Children s Books
Introduction
Children are highly acquiescent, and as such the media they consume is highly important in their
socialization. Taking into consideration the ubiquity of media and the degree to which it is entwined in
the lives of children, it is important that we be concerned with the themes presented in children s
media including books. As noted by Taylor (2003), Children s books are an important cultural
mechanism for teaching children gender roles. If children are exposed to stereotypical images in
children s books, they may adopt these as normative, and may adjust their actions accordingly
(Paynter, 2011). Given this, it is important to examine the representation(s) of gender in children s
books. In this paper I will discuss the depiction of gender in children s books, focusing particularly on
the manner in which boys and girls are portrayed in children s literature. In my discussion, I will draw
on Paul Kramer s children s book Maggie Goes on a Diet to illustrate problematic themes that are
prevalent in the current children s literature.
Literature Review
As social learning theory and gender schema theory explain, children exposed to gender role
stereotyping in the media, including children s literature, may internalize these gender stereotypes
(Bandura, 1971). According to gender schema theory, gendered characteristics are conserved and
transmitted to other members of a culture via schemata (Bem, 1993). Children form schemata of what
behaviours, attitudes, and

Essay on The Narrative Voice in Northanger Abbey by Jane...
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen expresses the powerful narrative voice. The narrative voice that she
uses is different from other novels. Most authors try to hide their presence in their novels but Jane
Austen does not try to hide her presence. Her presence in the novel is so clear. For example, The
advantages of natural folly in a beautiful girl have been already set forth by the capital pen of sister
author, and her treatment of the subject I will only add (Austen 81). She tries not to trick her reader as
he/she reads the novel. Instead she informs the reader that the book itself is just a novel. Her purpose
is not to convince the reader and correct her story, but to understand the imperfection of language
because language does not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is telling him her version of the story, which then filtered through Lockwood s perspective. Nelly
is undependable narrator because she keeps important information about other characters and events.
Lockwood is also not a dependable narrator because he does not fully understands the circumstance
and might be misinterprets the stories that are told by Nelly.
In Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte uses Mr. Lockwood to show that language is not enough to tell
the truth and understand the other person. When Mr. Lockwood greets Heathcliff on their first
encounter, Lockwood misjudges Heathcliff. He writes, Mr. Heathcliff and I are such a suitable pair to
divide the desolation between us (Bronte 1). Also he describes Heathcliff as a capital fellow (Bronte
1).
Bronte illustrates that the truth can be manipulated rather than fixed. And it can be manipulated by
depending on who is telling the story. She points out that language is manipulated by unreliable people
like Lockwood and Nelly. Jane Austen tries to make the reader doubt her stories so that they do not act
like Catherine how she makes mistakes about people and cannot distinguish between fiction and real
life. On the other hand, Bronte tries to make the reader to find and understand the various truths and
makes the reader doubt in both written and spoken words. Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen and
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte analyze the language that fails to

The Success of Groupon s Business Model
Groupon has been the primary source of bargaining leading individuals to try promotional offers at
restaurants, stores, and more. Their model works because shoppers are always looking for the best
deals to gain more value than they are willing or able to pay, enabling them to become a trusted guide
to local businesses. Their success now drives from the shift from searching and cutting for coupons to
the digital collection of coupons with a wide array of categories and search capabilities to narrow your
options that will best fit your preference. Other ventures such as LivingSocial, Amazon Local,
Sweetjack, DealChicken, Half Off Depot, Plum District, and TravelZoo have practiced the same
concept as Groupon but have not successfully executed or met the high levels of activity as Groupon.
Groupon has been triumphant in their practice as opposed to other similar ventures by offering more
deals with better discounts within the user s area than the other social media marketing sites and the
offers continue to expand worldwide. Groupon covers 185 cities while Living Social only acquires
140. According to DigitalBuzz 2011, the Inforgraphics portray Groupon to having 5 million
subscribers, 18 million Groupons sold in North America, $700 million saved in North America, a $30
average coupon price, with a 57% average Groupon discount. Joe Pulizzi claims an increase of
subscribers to 70 million. Similarly to online shopping, Groupon permits users to store deals in their

Protein Recovery
There are three separate discussions that cover protein basics, protein for recovery and protein during
exercise. Dr. Martin Gibala, Dr. Jeff Zachwieja and Dr. Chris Rosenbloom are three peer reviewed
experts that help provide answers to common questions concerning protein and its role in an athlete s
diet. The first discussion covers the basics of protein. Amino acids are the building blocks that bind
protein together. According to Dr. Zachwieja there are specific sequences of amino acids that gives the
protein its structure, its integrity, and, ultimately, its functionality as well. Dr. Rosenbloom explains,
the body requires roughly 20 amino acids. Nine of the 20 can not be created by our bodies, they can
only be consume through food and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dr. Zachwieja explains four studies have been published that are worthy because they were peer
reviewed cases. Two out of three of these studies have shown benefits of protein during exercise,
where the other two has not. Zachwieja states there is no benefit for consuming carbs and protein
during exercise. Dr. Gibala agrees with Zachwieja, there is little evidence supporting 4 to 1
carbohydrate to protein is beneficial. However, Gibala believes adding protein to an athlete s diet can
add energy to perform longer. According to Dr. Rosenbloom, there are carbohydrate needs and protein
needs and fluids, and we have to make sure we meet those necessities around the training schedule
(cite). He also, states protein is not a good source of fuel for the body. Rosenbloom explains, the
primary source of energy comes from the consumption of carbohydrates, however protein and
hydration is necessary for recovery and energy. I agree with Rosenbloom, our body requires a
combination of carbohydrates, proteins and fluids to meet the demands of our training schedule. Also,
I believe consuming protein during exercise might benefit us by providing additional energy,
especially on high intensity and volume workouts, long distance running and cycling. However,
predominately, carbohydrate is king when it comes to supplying energy for the body, then fat, and the
third choice is amino acids from protein. The amount

Amethyst Ring Analysis
I think the amethyst ring is important to the story because it represents the hope for Ha s father to
come back. Ha s father brought the ring from America. He trained in the navy there before Ha was

The amethyst ring is very meaningful to Ha and her family. This is shown on page 103, in the chapter

The ring is the last tangible remnant of Ha and her brothers father. It s the only thing that keeps them
from losing hope that their father will come back. This is shown on pages 248 until 250, in the
chapters Gone and Truly Gone : The amethyst stone is gone! ... Finally, she (mother) appears, looks at
each of us. Your father is truly gone. They were sure that he was gone when the ring was gone. Even

Stereotype Threat Theory And Its Effect On Society Essay
Is it possible that the way society sees a group can influence how that group performs on tests of
intelligence? According to the Stereotype Threat Theory, it can. Stereotype Threat Theory refers to the
conscious or unconscious belief that one belongs to a group stereotypically known for specific
performance deficits. The hypothesis is that these beliefs lead to suboptimal performance on tasks
specific to the stereotype (Stoet 94). Stereotype threat leads to a large gap between privileged, un
stereotyped groups and affected groups in society with regards to jobs, education, and social
interactions. This gap comes from stereotyped groups feeling they need to act in the way society tells
them to, creating societal chains on these groups, essentially an unstated law telling them what they
can and cannot do. This is because stereotype threat causes groups to identify with what society
provides their status to be Experiments show commonly stereotyped groups perform worse on
intellectual tests they are told their group generally does bad on. Therefore, commonly stereotyped
groups suffer from the stereotype threat on intellectual tests.
The planting of an idea in someone s mind can lead to that idea blooming into reality. When someone
is susceptible to being influenced by society s standards, it shows in how they handle everyday
activities. Davis hypothesized that if African American students were race primed , meaning they were
told African Americans do not do well a certain

allowing different spaces to communicate different functions and ideas. A majority of space within
Millennium Park all rise above the human scale. The surrounding buildings and skyscrapers serve as a

Boundaries within the garden are created through the trees and hedged on the outer perimeter. Inside
the park, the limestone curbs/walls define the spaces that the plants occupy. They also serve as barriers
in order to prevent visitors from going directly into the garden.
Spaces like the Jay Pritzker Pavilion and the Great Lawn individually create space through division of
territory. The Great Lawn is defined by a large area of cut grass. The enormous space welcomes
onlookers from every direction of the park. It s flat and soft surface allows visitors to freely dictate
how they want to use the space, ranging from relaxing to engage in physical activities. The Jay
Pritzker Pavilion defines itself separately from the Great Lawn by using cement as a surface instead of
grass. Individuals that occupy this space are welcomed by a fixed seating area, unlike the lawn where
people can freely occupy a space. Collectively, the two spaces are hard to miss, because they tower
over a majority of trees and sculpture in the park. Relative to the human scale, the metal frames and
interlocking steel pipes that stretch across the Great Lawn mimic the ambiance of an indoor concert
hall.

Essay about The American Revolution and the Institution of...
Introduction The American Revolution is defined as the political turbulence that took place towards
the end of eighteenth century when thirteen colonies in America united to attain freedom from the
British Empire (Clifford, 2005). The union of the thirteen colonies is now known as the United States
of America. According to Clifford (2005), the American Revolution occurred because of a series of
political, intellectual, and social transformations in the American government and society, which is
known as the American Enlightenment. The American Revolution created a variety of opportunities
for the American slaves to attain freedom (Waldstreicher, 2004). Slaves were provided with an

An approximate of three thousand slaves escaped from their masters in 1781 when the British invaded
Virginia (Blumrosen Blumrosen, 2006). About five thousand and twenty thousand slaves in Georgia
and South Carolina, respectively, were freed from bondage as a result of the American Revolution
(Clifford, 2005). The Revolution s natural rights philosophy inspired the freed blacks to request the
state legislatures to get rid of slavery and Congress to terminate the slave trade (Waldstreicher, 2004).
Many of the freed slaves moved to the North because they believed that living conditions were better
in the North than in the South. Unfortunately, they experienced many problems in the North, such as
lack of jobs, insufficient food, and lack of housing, which forced many of them to go back to the south
to work on the cotton plantations for wages (Clifford, 2005). In the South, the freed slaves were
assured of food and housing. Therefore, the population of slaves started to grow again in the 1790s
and spread into other lands that became the cotton belt (Clifford, 2005). At round 1793, cotton
cultivation expanded into large scale as a result of the invention of gin. The slaves in the southern
states were used as laborers in spite of the American Revolution s natural rights philosophy (Clifford,
2005). According to Clifford (2005), the slave owners started to improve the lives of their slaves on

If Stonewall products are perceived less competitive in the market, it would in turn lead to the
adjustment of the human resource demand for production.
Technology advancement enables the company to obtain better competitive advantages through cost
reduction resulted from improved production. Associating with the introduction of new technology,
different profiles of workforce may be required to perform the job. The supply and demand of human
resource must be carefully planned in such scenario. In Stonewall case, senior management may need
to consider what new technology could be adopted for its production.
In the last 3 decades, the enforcement of labour related legislations and regulations is also an external
factor impacts on HR planning. Those legislations govern how a company recruits, selects, promotes,
trains and compensates its employees. As an example, employment equity needs to be considered
during the HR planning process. Besides, the increase of minimum wages will affect company s
decision in expanding its workforce. Moreover, as Stonewall s employees are unionized, it will limit
the flexibility of Stonewall to make drastic decisions to lay off its employees even under very critical

operational cost.

Installing Windows Server 2012 Machine
GOAL
The main purpose of this lab is to install and configure services such as Active Directory, DNS and
DHCP on the Windows Server 2012 machine. Also the DNS and DHCP services were monitored with
the help of a monitoring system like OpsviewAtom and Windows Performance Monitor. The role of
DHCP is to make sure that clients (Windows 7) can obtain an IP address whereas that of DNS is to
make sure that they can access websites within the domain.
The steps regarding AD, DNS and DHCP were a refresher as it was covered in a previous class. The
installation and configuration of Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and Performance monitor was
new which needed some research and understanding.
PROCEDURAL AND INFORMATIONAL DOCUMENTATION
The first activity of the lab is to install Windows Server 2012 Datacenter. The steps involve using
VMWare s Vsphere and the .iso image of windows server that is already been installed. The steps for
setting up the OS on the VM are pretty straightforward. After the CD/DVD has been inserted the
installation process is followed and then Server can now be used.
The second activity involved the installation of DHCP on the Windows Server machine. This is done
by Add the DHCP Server feature Option from within the Server Manager, Add Roles and Features.
After the installation is completed, the scope of the subnet is to be defined. Within the scope, the
allocated range of IP addresses is entered along with certain reservations (Windows 7 client)
exceptions.

Symbolism In The Mending Wall By Robert Frost
What Is The Mending Wall ? Robert Frost s poem Mending Wall is a poem that was written without
proper form and has no stanzas/rhyme to it; this was done purposely by the author to make the writing
sound more conversational and look more like a common story that a reader can simply apply to
his/her own life circumstances. The poem presents readers with two neighbors and their efforts at
reconstructing a stone wall separating their property every year. Frost uses metaphoric symbolism in
this poem as the wall is used as a metaphor to portray the idea of a barrier between people and the
repairing of the wall as resolving obstacles and bringing people together. Every spring, two very
different men come together to rebuild a wall destroyed by nature and hunters; however, the speaker
begins to think, what is the purpose of this wall if we have no animals to keep away? Why do we
rebuild a wall every year that not even nature wants? The poem begins to compare two lifestyles:
traditional and logical. While the neighbor truly believes good fences make good neighbors , the
speaker argues that respect and kindness do rather than a useless wall. The first part of this poem

America s Victory Dbq
In analyzing the American Revolution, one could see that America s victory could be summed up in
three main parts, political, diplomatic, and military reasons. To start, the victory of the United States
had many political reasons, such as Thomas Paine s pamplet Common Sense that had not only been
one of the most influential pamplets ever written but had also called for a republic. This idea had
given America the push they needed into fighting for their independence. Another political reason had
been the Declaration of Independence in 1773 for it had, like with Common Sense , pushed Americans
for independence. One more political reason for the U.S. victory in the Revolutionary War would be
George Washington himself. Yes, he had lost more battles than he won but with his amazing sense of
justice, leadership, patience and especially being a man of wealth from Virginia, Washington had
gained back the trust from the colonists to their government. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This alliance had helped the Americans greatly by providing firearms, gunpowder, a naval force, more
military strength, and most importantly, financial aid. America, at the time, had already been suffering
from debt and did not have enough gold to back up the less important paper money. This financial aid
from France had been essential in the United States victory in the war overall with battles following
Saratoga. To continue with the previous statement, the official formation of French American alliance
in 1778 that had offered the colonists everything Britain was asking for but with freedom. The alliance
might have created a shaky bond between America and France but it had made the fight for
independence fairer between the the two and

I. INTRODUCTION
Image sharpening and smoothening is perhaps one of the most ubiquitously used techniques in any
image processing application. While these are considered inexpensive operations, multiple use of the
same may become computationally intensive, and hence may make the overall application slow. In
this paper we examine and compare the performance of sharpening filters in time domain and
frequency domain. While there are many apparent computational advantages in converting an image

Essay On Gibbs Reflection
Before starting my reflective journal during my placement, I decided to conduct research on Gibbs
reflection model and De Bono s 6 thinking hats before deciding to choose Gibbs reflection model to
get the best out of my professional journey into becoming a teacher. Lia (2016) explains that the aims
of Gibbs model is to challenge assumptions, and to encourage self improvement by identifying
strengths and weaknesses then action planning how to address them. This helped me during my
placement as one of my duties was to plan an activity with a child that was meet the EYFS speech and
communication curriculum and conduct my own work activity with the children which I repeated and
adapted after reflecting and using Gibbs Reflection model. However, there is limitations to using this
model which I will later discuss, and I will also talk about why I have interpreted other models into
my own reflective practice to get the best out of my ability.
Mackie (2013) also explains that The Gibbs reflective cycle (1988) encourages a clear description of
the situation, analysis of feelings, evaluation of the experience and an analysis to make sense of the
experience. This helped me when reflecting on my own professional practice as it allowed me to look
at each individual feeling on how I felt in the situation and took look at how I can improve on my
practice for next time I am in the same or similar situation. I agree with using this model for looking at
how to improve teaching techniques as It allowed me to look at what I did wrong as well as what went
well, and I would keep the same. This was a good reflective method for me as the teacher who was
observing me during my placement allowed me to repeat the same work activity each week to allow
me to improve and adapt different teaching methods that work best for the children. For example,
using picture exchange communication as well as talking to a child to help them eye contact and
communication skills. I also had a one to one talk about my teaching practices and she gave me some
ideas and different techniques and approaches for where I could improve on my teaching practices and
what I did well. Paige Smith and Craft said, This should promote an awareness of the multiplicity

The Renaissance Period And Artemisia Gentileschi Of The...
Introduction
When one thinks of influential Western artists, images of the works of Michelangelo or Caravaggio
might be evoked. In fact, most paintings one may think of would have been completed by men. Most
of the art movements in the western world were in fact lead and contributed to by men, especially in
the Renaissance and Baroque period. Even though art as a profession in these time periods was
dominated by male artists, female artists did, in fact, make significant contributions to their respective
art movements. This paper will discuss and compare the lives and works of two Italian painters:
Sofonisba Anguissola of the Renaissance period and Artemisia Gentileschi of the Baroque period.

Thanks to Sofonisba Anguissola s success and fame, the door had been opened for more women to

Artemisia Gentileschi
Thirty four years after Sofonisba Anguissola became court painter to Phillip II, Artemisia Gentileschi
was born in 1593. Unlike Anguissola, Artemisia Gentileschi was fortunate enough to have a well
established painter as a father. Orazio Gentileschi was a follower of on of the leading Baroque painters
Caravaggio, who s paintings utilized dramatic lighting and focused on the narrative of his realistically
plain characters. Orazio trained his daughter in Caravaggio s style until he found that her talents
surpassed his own. He then hired Agostino Tassi to take over her training and to teach her perspective
in 1611. However, Tassi raped Artemisia, falsely promising to marry her afterward. Orazio sued Tassi
for the rape of Artemisia and the theft of several pictures. The trial lasted for five months, and
Artemisia had to endure the thumb screw, a lie detector test of the time. Tassi was found guilty and
spent eight months in prison before being released. Even though Tassi was found guilty, Artemisia was
labeled as a licentious woman ever since. It is speculated that this trial acted as inspiration for many of
Artemisia s paintings, which included subjects of heroic women.
Despite her tarnished reputation, Artemisia Gentileschi became one of the most

Biofuels As A Fuel Source
Biofuels as a Fuel Source: Paper 3 In a time of energy crisis and a subsequent search for a renewable
replacement for crude oil, biofuels have arisen as a source of hope. Currently, the largest source of
biofuels in the United States is corn based ethanol. The large scale of corn ethanol production and the
potential promise of finding a domestic, reliable source of energy, requires the fuel s viability as a
replacement for crude oil to be evaluated. However, there is debate surrounding corn based ethanol s
environmental, economic, and social impacts. The scientists and governments who support the
development of biofuels claim that it will not only provide a new and sustainable source of energy but
also that it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and is therefore better for the environment. However,
although corn based ethanol continues to harbor support from the United States government,
environmentalists argue that ethanol is not substantially better for the environment, especially when
the effects of its production are taken into account. Also, while some larger farms profit from ethanol
production, it places economic stress upon smaller farms and the agricultural industry and leads to
higher food prices that are a great detriment to those living at the level of subsistence. Therefore, in
order to produce energy efficient, environmentally friendly fuel, the United States must work towards
developing cellulosic biofuels and those produced by microbes as they have

My Last Duchess and Porphyria’s Lover
The mind of a psychotic can be an interesting maze to travel. The reason s that they do what they do
will probably remain a mystery for a long time, despite technological advancements. The reasoning
for some psychotics slips and harms to others can possibly be explained by Owen J. Flanagan, as he
states, The fact that slips sometimes take even the person himself by surprise is explained by the fact
that unconscious wishes are usually unknown to the person himself. (Flanagan). This can help explain
how the men act within the stories My Last Duchess and Porphyria s Lover. Furthermore, this is a
comparative analysis of the lover s within Porphyria s Lover and My Last Duchess, both by Robert
Browning. In both stories, the lover s perceive the women as objects, instead of actual people. In My
Last Mistress, he believes that he has given her a gift by marrying her, and thus thinks that he owns
her. He feels that she is taking this gift granted and gets angry when she does not worship him. This is
further pointed out by Susan Brownmiller, ...that masculine esteem which gets its kick and sense of
power from viewing females as anonymous, panting playthings, adult toys, dehumanized objects to be
used, abused, broken and discarded. (Brownmiller). This mode of thinking is more akin to the man in
My Last Duchess. On the same token, in Porphyria s Lover, the lover still sees her as an object
because he wants to make her his forever. He does not want her to go out by herself to

The Concept of Peace
For Muslims peace is not a single dimensional or specific idea. Peace is to be at rest with one s own
wants and desires and to have peace with the world around them. There is a mutual relationship
between this inner peace and the peace with the wider world. Muslim s believe that you cannot be at
peace with yourself until you are also at peace with others. It will also not be possible to live at peace
with others until there is a sense of peace with yourself.
In Islam the concept of peace is two fold. Individuals must firstly be at peace with Allah and secondly,

Obedience to the Five Pillars helps to ensure that the individual adherent finds inner peace.
The Islamic concepts of Taqwa, Qadr and Sabr hold more immediate benefits. For Muslims everyday
is a struggle, or jihad, to pursue submission and to see that the Five Pillars are correctly observed. This
on going struggle helps ensure Muhammad s command to be conscious of Allah in your heart (Taqwa)
is always fulfilled. The greater the level of Taqwa in an adherent s heart, the closer they are to God
and peace. The more Taqwa an adherent has the easier it will be for them to submit to the notion of
Qadr, the concept of God s measurement of how we respond to the changes of life. Adherents are
expected to trust Allah with peace and acceptance no matter what fate that might occur to them. Sabr
is the patience and determination an individual demonstrates in the face of life s challenges. The Qur
an states no disaster can come on the Earth, or on yourselves, that isn t already recorded by us in a
book, and that is indeed easy for Allah. Remember that so you don t despair over what you have lost

concepts of Taqwa, Qadr and Sabr, a Muslim adherent is able to move closer to attaining individual

Metaphors And Symbolism In Death Of A Salesman
ABSTRACT
Miller has been one of the most outspoken American writers of the last four decades. He has held
generally progressive and radical views and has variously written against racism, capitalism and
Vietnam war. All these ideas are amply reflected in his plays. Death of a Salesman was Miller s play
and an instant success. It was hailed as a modern classic and has put Miller among the foremost
playwrights of this century. Death of a Salesman Miller is still concerned with the exploitations of the

Burial Customs In America Essay
According to an article submitted to the Berkeley Planning Journal, approximately 800,000 gallons of
formaldehyde is buried in the United States every year. To put the amount of this hazardous chemical
that Americans use to bury their people in perspective, it is enough to fill one and a quarter Olympic
sized swimming pools each year (Calderone). Unfortunately, this is only one of the many issues that is
hurting the environment and has arised from modern burials. Because of the negative environmental
effects that modern burial customs are causing, Americans should switch back to natural burials in

Definition Of Beauty In American Culture
It s human nature to desire to be perceived as beautiful, but who determines what beauty is or looks
like? The Merriam Webster dictionary defines beauty as the quality of being physically attractive;
qualities a person possesses that gives pleasure to the senses or the mind (Merriam Webster). The
definition of beauty can vary greatly between cultures and countries. We ll explore the similarities and
differences of beauty in Asian and American cultures. The concept of beauty in most Asian countries
is identified within Caucasian (Anglo Saxon) standards. Many Asian women are unaware of the fact
that this standard of beauty was shaped by the influences of Caucasian standards on their society. A
beautiful Asian woman is described as thin, pale skinned, black or brown hair, and dark brown eyes.

Comparing Unnatural Strategies To Relax
Everyone experiences some level of stress whether it is in their school life, work life, or social life
around friends and family. To relieve stress, many people use different strategies to achieve a relaxing
state. Two major ways people are able to relieve stress is naturally and unnaturally. Relieve stress
naturally involves using your own body and mentality to relax while unnatural sources of relaxation
comes drugs like alcohol, marijuana and tobacco products. Unnatural and natural strategies are used to
promote relaxation. Both methods compare and contrast with their beneficial uses, long lasting effects,
and its controversy on overall health. Even though unnatural and natural strategies of relaxing takes
time, they both produce extra benefits beyond solely relaxation. Natural strategies, for example,
exercising not only enables relaxation if done to an extent, but also promotes better heart health,
muscle growth, endurance, and weight loss. While these extra benefits are generally desired, to get to
the point of feeling relaxation may be longer and harder to get. Unnatural strategies for relaxation, like

Veldt and Marionettes, Inc. that there is something we can t contend with; technology. In these stories
the author shows us a world where people are distant because of and can t compete with technology.
In Ray Bradbury s short story The Veldt he shows us a family that is so distant from each other
because of technology. The Hadley family lives in a Happylife Home that does everything for them
and the children depend on their nursery that has raised them their entire lives. Mr. David McClean
comments to Mr. Hadley, You ve let this room and this house replace you and your wife in your
children s affections. This room is their mother and father, far more important in their lives than real
parents ( The Veldt 10). Children Wendy and Peter live in their own personal bubble because they don
t have to rely on their parents for anything. The children rely so much on their nursery that it has
replaced and made them so distant from their own parents. Technology has become the children s
parents; their role model. The nursery has caused the family to become distant, but it s more than that,
it s the entire house. Bradbury adds, And he marched around the house turning off the voice clocks,
the stoves, the heaters, the shoe shiners, the shoe lacers, the body scrubbers and swabbers

How Memories From The Brain Is Capable Of Retrieving...
Every time I learn the name of a student, I forget the name of a fish was once said by David Jordan,
the president of Stanford University (Anderson, Bjork Bjork, 2000). This statement is interesting
because it brings up the idea of the amount of information one can consume and maintain available at
any given time; this information is put into memory. Memory is the process of maintaining,
recovering, and applying information about episodes and events, when the original material is not
current (Goldstein, 2008, p. 136). This definition mean even if we have not just experience that
memory, our brain can go back in time and retrieve what has happened hours, days or years ago.
Retrieving memories from the brain is the process of relocating material from Long Term Memory
(LTM) back into working memory, where it becomes available through consciousness (Goldstein,
2008, p. 197). Our brain is capable of retrieving information because it has been encoded. Encoding is
the process of obtaining information then converting it into memories, in which goes onto our LTM
(Goldstein, 2008, p. 196). The main claim of this essay is that is that if a memory is encoded correctly,
then that is all that is needed for memory failure or success and the process of retrieving memories
also relies on the encoding of the memory. Meanwhile, this claim that encoding is all that is needed
for memory failure or success was researched by Craik and Lockhart (1972, as described by
Goldstein, 2008, p.

Ww1 Trench Weapons
As we examine warfare from 1914 to the 1990s, we examine multiple tactics that include one lethal
weapon, the tank. At the introduction to World War I during the Battle of the Marne trench warfare
began to appear. A few months later a stalemate was in place and neither side could advance through
the thick machine gunfire the moment a soldier stood. It became apparent that a reliable breakthrough
vehicle was necessary to assault the heavily armed trenches that the germans dug. The weapon soon
appeared as the tank, the tank was extremely heavily armed and armored with the weaponry that was
required to break the stalemate during World War I. After the conclusion of World War I, Hitler s
panzer army broke into poland and occupied the small country. During ... Show more content on

The tank first appeared on the fields of Somme as a new type of wonder weapon. Early tanks like the
Mark I and Little Willy were ineffective but terrifying for both the crew and the Germans. The tank
was heavy and the suspension of the tank suffered greatly under the weight of the tank. Tracks and
suspension was new at the time and was mostly used on tractors. The idea was for the wide caterpillar
like tracks to balance on thick mud and unstable terrain. The tracks designed to plow fields were not
resistant to gunfire and rocky terrain which would cause the bolts to loosen and the tacks to fall. The
armor of the although thick was mostly riveted which once hit would send the bolts flying everywhere
greatly injuring the crew helplessly trapped inside. The first tanks

Maxine Hong Kingston s The Woman Warrior Essay
Maxine Hong Kingston s The Woman Warrior Maxine Hong Kingston s novel, The Woman Warrior is
a semi autobiographical collection of short stories that chronicles her childhood in California. It gives
the reader a feeling of how it feels like to be a Chinese American girl growing up with traditional
parents in a world that is quite different from theirs. Throughout the novel, both she and her mother
refer to the outside world as ghosts. The subtitle given to the book is Memoirs of a Girlhood Among
Ghosts. To figure out the meaning behind this subtitle, one has to try to see what ... Show more

It is here where we see Kingston use the term ghost in a manner to mean stranger. She writes, America
has been full of machines and ghosts – Taxi Ghosts, Bus Ghosts, Police Ghosts, Fire Ghosts, Meter
Reader Ghosts, Tree Trimming Ghosts Five and Dime Ghosts. This description gives the reader the
culture shock that someone who has just moved to the US can get. It may be a very unnerving
experience to be surrounded by so many strange and alien things.
Despite her mother using the term ghost to be vaguely insulting, it does not seem that way when
Kingston uses this term for people. For example is in the chapter A Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipe.
She labels her Negro friends as black ghosts. When she labels gives them this name, it is not as if she
is using this term in a derogatory manner. Since her mother has always referred to strangers as ghosts,
she has picked up the same habit. In this context, it is as if she refers to her friends in an affectionate
manner when she calls them ghosts.
Storytelling (or in the case of this novel, talk story ) also plays a crucial role in this book. Within each
chapter, there are other smaller stories that are a part

Biological Molecules Lab Report
Questions for Thought: Lab 4 Identifying Biological Molecules
Based on your results from Part 1, which substances responded to the Lugol s test and which to the
Benedict s test? Did these same substances respond to the same reagents after the substances were
hydrolyzed with hot HCL? Are your results consistent with how Lugol s and Benedict s reagents
work? Explain your answers.
In part 1, data sheet 1: Biological Molecules Test section C Lugol s the only positive polysaccharide
was starch which tested as a deep blue back color. As for section D, Lugol s test after hydrolysis all
the polysaccharides were negative yielding a yellow color. However looking at section A Benedict s

Milk pounder yielded a very light sheer orange at 80 degrees Celsius. For section B, Benedict s test
after hydrolysis several reducing sugars produced positive test results including glucose, sucrose,
raffinose, starch and milk powder. That being said most positive results were organic in color however
raffinose produced a brown color (closer to dark orange). Looking at the overall data, starch
responded to both reagents for section B, Benedict s after hydrolysis and section C, Lugol s meaning
both were positive test results. However for section A, Benedict s test before hydrolysis, Starch did not
yield a positive result. Our test results were almost exact with how Benedict s and Lugol s reagents
work. Quoting straight from the lab manual, Benedict s reagent is a alkaline (basic) solution of copper
ions that change colors in the presence of reducing sugars and heat. Low concentrations of reducing
sugars give a yellow to orange precipitates; higher concentrations give red to brown precipitates.
Nonreducing sugars give no precipitate or color change Thought our test results never yielded red
negative results my lab partner and I did find test results that were yellow and orange positives or
down negative results. As for the Lugol s test the lab

Aztec Research Paper
The great Aztec Empire, Tenochtitlán was overpowered and taken by Hernán Cortés. When the empire
fell, many Aztecs were infected with a disease from Europe, smallpox. It was their first exposure to
the disease and they had no immunity. Over a course of months, the culture and civilization of the
fallen empire have changed.Numerous people wonder about the Aztecs who have survived and still
remain in Tenochtitlán. On a trip to the city, we stopped an Aztec resident on the street to answer a few
questions. The resident requested to remain anonymous for safety reasons. Q: What was your life like

everything you have witnessed and lived through, do you have any opinions on mestizos? A: Mestizos
have the ancestors of Indians and Europeans. I m sick and outraged at their heritage. The Europeans
are the culprits who brought the deadly disease to us and killed many of our people. How some of my
fellow citizens could live with and love them eludes me. Q: Do you hope or believe that the Aztecs

Zechariah Is The Doctrine Of End Times
One of the major themes of the book of Zechariah is Old Testament Eschatology. Eschatology is the
doctrine of end times, or the study of last things. Zechariah s message is divided into three main
sections. The first section, chapters 1 8, is considered apocalyptic and is filled with eight visions
succeeding one another in one night. The second section, chapters 7 8, delivered two years later, are an
answer to the question whether the days of fasting and mourning for the destruction of the city should
be kept any longer, and an assurance to the people of God s presence and blessing. The third and final
section, chapters 9 14, consists of two oracles. The first oracle (9 11) addresses God s dealings with
His people. The second oracle (12 14) points out the final conflict and triumph of God s kingdom. In
the first section, Zechariah details a series of eight supernatural visions the Lord reveals to Him. These
visions are apocalyptic in nature and are communicated to encourage the people to finish rebuilding
the Temple, which at that point was five months into reconstruction. These visions are given to relay
hope for the people s future and the future of the city of the Temple, Jerusalem. The first vision (1:7
17) consists of four angelic riders on four horses of various colors. The angelic rider on the red horse
dismounts his horse in the middle of a grove of myrtle trees. Zechariah asks the meaning of this vision
and the angel of the Lord responds. The horses and riders

I Know It Was An Accident And She Didn t Mean
I know it was an accident and she didn t mean to hurt Ashleigh. I know it was bad luck. I know
Ashleigh should not have got in the car. But Jo needs to be punished by the law...I want the law, the
community to say it was wrong... Antonello paused, but I don t want to make it any harder for her than
it has to be. I felt sorry for her when I saw her at the Bridge. You re right, she s suffering too. They had
talked about it for a long time and they agreed to write a short statement about their granddaughter,
about her beauty and her potential, her intelligence, the joy she bought to their lives, and about their
sadness and grief.
On the way from the carpark to the courtroom that morning, Rae said, I hope she gets a long sentence.
I know I should be more forgiving. That I should be moving on, and that I should think about what
Ashleigh might have wanted. I m trying not to hate her but she has to be punished... and I don t want
to see her again, never. I want her to be banished. I don t want to walk around dreading that I might
run into her, that Jane or Alex might run into her.
Rae and Alex were coming back to themselves, slowly. They were back to parenting Jane, and they
were talking to each other again, occasionally touching even in public, winking at each other when
something Antonello or Paolina said seemed old fashioned or tiresome or repetitive.
In the few months between his meeting with Jo at the Bridge and the court case, Antonello made

Product Liability Case
To the extent that private prisons, Private Probation companies,, and Military contractors have to pay
tort claims for negligence, assault and battery, wrongful death, and other actions, these costs will be
reflected in the fees these companies charge to the government agencies that hire them. Ultimately
these costs are borne by the taxpayer. Products liability is another area of tort law that impacts
American society. Under product liability manufacturers, suppliers, Distributors, and retailers can be
held liable for injuries caused buy their products. Greenman v. Yuba Power Products (1963) 59 C2d

even in the absence of negligence on their part. In order for the plaintiff to Prevail in such a case, the
plaintiff must show that the defendant manufactured or sold the product, that the product was
defective, that there was actual and proximate causation of the plaintiff s injuries resulting from the
product s defects, and that the defect existed at the time the product was conveyed by the defendant. A
product liability suit may also be brought under a claim of breach of warranty. A manufacturer,
supplier, distributor, or retailer of a defective product may be liable where the buyer relied upon an

INTRODUCTION
Management has been proficient a long time period. Organized endeavors focused by people
accountable for planning, organizing, leading, and controlling undertakings have occurred for
thousands of years.
As the initial days of systematic commercial and structural study, philosophers have contended that
companies can understand aids using either more traditional or more modern management methods.
For example, Taylor, Weber and Fayol were well known societal researchers that advocated a
traditional management. They are the originators of organizational studies and started their theories in
the commencement of the 20th century at the establishment of the industrial era, directing on practical
features, capabilities, instructions and discipline within management (Mullins, 2007, Bloisi et al
2003). Now the world has advanced (multinationals, globalization, information technology) and
management articles and books seem to take an additional modern management method, focusing on
the lengthy period, human beings and the capability to unleash their abilities (Mullins, 2007). The
main focus of this paper is to understand the classical and modern approaches in terms of workplace

LIVED EXPERIENCES OF WOMEN DIAGNOSED WITH HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS
Introduction Human Papillomavirus (HPV) has been dubbed as the most common sexually transmitted
infection that does not require sexual penetration for it to spread. Individuals infected with HPV may
be asymptomatic or they may acquire genital warts or cancer depending on the strains that have
infected them. With more than 100 strains identified, the most commonly spread strains that result to
genital warts and cancer are 6 and 11, 16 and 18, respectively. These common strains are currently
vaccine preventable with cervarix (for type 16 and 18) and Gardasil (types 6, 11, 16 and 18). In 2007,
Australia led the first vaccine program with Gardasil which have successfully ... Show more content

It is noted that statistics on HPV infection is nil worldwide, nationally or locally. Treatment of the
virus requires constant visitation to medical practitioners. According to Workowski et al (2010),
genital warts may have various recommended treatment regimen depending on considerable factors
each with its own side effects but this does not remove the virus but only removes the growth.
Treating HPV related cancers (penile, anogenital, oropharyngeal, cervical) on the other hand is
another roller coaster experience. Disappointingly, very few studies highlight the experiences of the
individuals suffering from HPV. Hence, this study is aimed in understanding the lived experiences of
women with human papillomavirus. Through this qualitative study, health care providers may be able
to analyze the personal perceptions, life changes, success and adversities of these patients. It is the
hope of the researcher that the findings of the study would be utilized in checking and improving the
current nursing practice to enable health care providers to create a more holistic method of care and
management for women with HPV.

  • 2. Phillis Wheatley Analysis Anne Bradstreet once wrote, If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome. This quote summarizes much of what her and fellow female writer Phillis Wheatley s lives were like during their fights for social change. Throughout their lives, these women were forced to live through challenges and injustices on levels that are unimaginable to many of members of today s society. With the Bradstreet and Wheatley did much to counter these challenges, even directly addressing the masses in their writings as forms of protests. This is precisely the element of which both unites and distinguishes the two women on a very grand scale. In Phillis Wheatley s On Being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She uses her writing to express her ideas on women being significant figures in the world, or at very least the field of writing. She makes note of the history of writers and how strongly women have been involved in the process for a number of years, But sure the antique Greeks were far more mild / Else of our sex, why feigned they those nine / And poesy made Calliope s own child (Bradstreet 31 33).Bradstreet includes this line to establish the belief to her readers that women have been and should continue to be significant figures in the world of writing and the arts. With the muses of the famed Greeks being women and successful poets themselves, Bradstreet hopes to argue that women were important and proficient in the trade that men laid claim to in her time. In all of her piece, Bradstreet s main idea that she hopes to convey is that since women have been such staples in the art for so long that it only makes sense for them to be allowed to still. While both authors write in ways that express radical ideas for their respective time periods, they were sure to write in methods that did not serve to be inflammatory to their largely opposing audiences. Not only do the elderly have to learn to deal with many forms of Ageism (the stereotyping and prejudice against individuals or groups because of their age), some also have to deal with the fact that they do not have enough savings or pension benefits to be self supporting, for most people over sixty five, the major source of income is social security (Macionis, 2005). • 4. Mrs. Wright As A Woman s Culture Of Social Isolation Essay Mrs. Wright in Trifles, Emily in A Rose for Emily, and Mildred in The Hairy Ape exemplified a woman s culture of social isolation. Condemned in a house alone to worry only about her wifely duties, Mrs. Wright s husband isolated her from the community and past self. Pressured by her father, lover, and her own fear of abandonment, Emily lived a life of isolation from love and her community. Caused by her many years living in the higher class, Mildred felt isolated from the rest of society and the lower class. Mrs. Wright, Miss Emily, and Mildred have all been pushed into seclusion away from general society, in turn causing all three of women to take drastic measures to break their isolation. The three females in Triffles, A Rose for Emily, and The Hairy Ape demonstrated the negative effect of social isolation. Mrs. Wright suffered from social isolation caused by her husband. When Mr. Hale suggested the family go in with me on a party telephone, Mr. Wright defended himself by saying he only wanted peace and quiet and seemed to not care what his wife wanted. Wright from potential hobbies, social groups, and activities. Before she became ... • 5. Stakeholder Attitudes To Inclusion Paper 1. Introduction Attitudes to inclusion play a pivotal role in the success of inclusion strategies in the classroom (Graham Spandaguo, 2011; Morin, Rivard, Crocker, Boursier Caron, 2013). Successful inclusion incorporates the student s ecological context including peers, family, school staff and the broader community (Foreman Arthur Kelly, 2014). Since the 1990s attitudes towards inclusion have become more positive (Morin et al., 2013). Nevertheless, negativity towards inclusion continues among stakeholders. These negative attitudes may relate to which schools students attend, how prepared schools and teachers are and how to adapt the curriculum to their needs. The attitudes of various stakeholders may impact on the success of inclusion in the classroom. Therefore, stakeholder attitudes require understanding and consideration for possible intervention strategies. Through a synthesis of current research, three recommendations will be outlined to help various stakeholder views conform to existing inclusion policy. 2. • 7. The Portrayal Of Children s Books Introduction Children are highly acquiescent, and as such the media they consume is highly important in their socialization. Taking into consideration the ubiquity of media and the degree to which it is entwined in the lives of children, it is important that we be concerned with the themes presented in children s media including books. As noted by Taylor (2003), Children s books are an important cultural mechanism for teaching children gender roles. If children are exposed to stereotypical images in children s books, they may adopt these as normative, and may adjust their actions accordingly (Paynter, 2011). Given this, it is important to examine the representation(s) of gender in children s books. In this paper I will discuss the depiction of gender in children s books, focusing particularly on the manner in which boys and girls are portrayed in children s literature. In my discussion, I will draw on Paul Kramer s children s book Maggie Goes on a Diet to illustrate problematic themes that are prevalent in the current children s literature. Literature Review As social learning theory and gender schema theory explain, children exposed to gender role stereotyping in the media, including children s literature, may internalize these gender stereotypes (Bandura, 1971). According to gender schema theory, gendered characteristics are conserved and transmitted to other members of a culture via schemata (Bem, 1993). The narrative voice that she uses is different from other novels. Most authors try to hide their presence in their novels but Jane Austen does not try to hide her presence. For example, The advantages of natural folly in a beautiful girl have been already set forth by the capital pen of sister author, and her treatment of the subject I will only add (Austen 81). In Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte uses Mr. Lockwood to show that language is not enough to tell the truth and understand the other person. When Mr. Lockwood greets Heathcliff on their first encounter, Lockwood misjudges Heathcliff. He writes, Mr. Heathcliff and I are such a suitable pair to divide the desolation between us (Bronte 1). Also he describes Heathcliff as a capital fellow (Bronte 1). Bronte illustrates that the truth can be manipulated rather than fixed. And it can be manipulated by depending on who is telling the story. She points out that language is manipulated by unreliable people like Lockwood and Nelly. Jane Austen tries to make the reader doubt her stories so that they do not act like Catherine how she makes mistakes about people and cannot distinguish between fiction and real life. • 15. Stereotype Threat Theory And Its Effect On Society Essay Is it possible that the way society sees a group can influence how that group performs on tests of intelligence? According to the Stereotype Threat Theory, it can. Stereotype Threat Theory refers to the conscious or unconscious belief that one belongs to a group stereotypically known for specific performance deficits. The hypothesis is that these beliefs lead to suboptimal performance on tasks specific to the stereotype (Stoet 94). Stereotype threat leads to a large gap between privileged, un stereotyped groups and affected groups in society with regards to jobs, education, and social interactions. This gap comes from stereotyped groups feeling they need to act in the way society tells them to, creating societal chains on these groups, essentially an unstated law telling them what they can and cannot do. This is because stereotype threat causes groups to identify with what society provides their status to be Experiments show commonly stereotyped groups perform worse on intellectual tests they are told their group generally does bad on. Therefore, commonly stereotyped groups suffer from the stereotype threat on intellectual tests. The planting of an idea in someone s mind can lead to that idea blooming into reality. The Revolution s natural rights philosophy inspired the freed blacks to request the state legislatures to get rid of slavery and Congress to terminate the slave trade (Waldstreicher, 2004). Many of the freed slaves moved to the North because they believed that living conditions were better in the North than in the South. • 20. Symbolism In The Mending Wall By Robert Frost What Is The Mending Wall ? Robert Frost s poem Mending Wall is a poem that was written without proper form and has no stanzas/rhyme to it; this was done purposely by the author to make the writing sound more conversational and look more like a common story that a reader can simply apply to his/her own life circumstances. The poem presents readers with two neighbors and their efforts at reconstructing a stone wall separating their property every year. Frost uses metaphoric symbolism in this poem as the wall is used as a metaphor to portray the idea of a barrier between people and the repairing of the wall as resolving obstacles and bringing people together. Every spring, two very different men come together to rebuild a wall destroyed by nature and hunters; however, the speaker begins to think, what is the purpose of this wall if we have no animals to keep away? Why do we rebuild a wall every year that not even nature wants? The poem begins to compare two lifestyles: traditional and logical. While the neighbor truly believes good fences make good neighbors , the speaker argues that respect and kindness do rather than a useless wall. The first part of this poem announces the presence of wall destroyers. Lines 1 4 of the poem immediately introduce readers to something there is that doesn t love a wall . To start, the victory of the United States had many political reasons, such as Thomas Paine s pamplet Common Sense that had not only been one of the most influential pamplets ever written but had also called for a republic. This idea had given America the push they needed into fighting for their independence. Another political reason had been the Declaration of Independence in 1773 for it had, like with Common Sense , pushed Americans for independence. One more political reason for the U.S. victory in the Revolutionary War would be George Washington himself. The paper examines various kernels and compares the efficiency of the filtering technique against the computation time for various sizes of images with various sizes of high pass filter kernels. We have made use of Sobel filter as the standard filter kernel against which other techniques are compared. Keywords frequency domain; edge detection; sobel filter; laplacian; gaussian; I. INTRODUCTION Image sharpening and smoothening is perhaps one of the most ubiquitously used techniques in any image processing application. While these are considered inexpensive operations, multiple use of the same may become computationally intensive, and hence may make the overall application slow. In this paper we examine and compare the performance of sharpening filters in time domain and frequency domain. While there are many apparent computational advantages in converting an image into frequency domain to apply a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay On Gibbs Reflection Before starting my reflective journal during my placement, I decided to conduct research on Gibbs reflection model and De Bono s 6 thinking hats before deciding to choose Gibbs reflection model to get the best out of my professional journey into becoming a teacher. Lia (2016) explains that the aims of Gibbs model is to challenge assumptions, and to encourage self improvement by identifying strengths and weaknesses then action planning how to address them. This helped me during my placement as one of my duties was to plan an activity with a child that was meet the EYFS speech and communication curriculum and conduct my own work activity with the children which I repeated and adapted after reflecting and using Gibbs Reflection model. However, there is limitations to using this model which I will later discuss, and I will also talk about why I have interpreted other models into my own reflective practice to get the best out of my ability. Mackie (2013) also explains that The Gibbs reflective cycle (1988) encourages a clear description of the situation, analysis of feelings, evaluation of the experience and an analysis to make sense of the experience. This helped me when reflecting on my own professional practice as it allowed me to look at each individual feeling on how I felt in the situation and took look at how I can improve on my practice for next time I am in the same or similar situation. I agree with using this model for looking at how to improve teaching techniques as It allowed me to look at what I did wrong as well as what went well, and I would keep the same. This was a good reflective method for me as the teacher who was observing me during my placement allowed me to repeat the same work activity each week to allow me to improve and adapt different teaching methods that work best for the children. For example, using picture exchange communication as well as talking to a child to help them eye contact and communication skills. I also had a one to one talk about my teaching practices and she gave me some ideas and different techniques and approaches for where I could improve on my teaching practices and what I did well. Artemisia Gentileschi Thirty four years after Sofonisba Anguissola became court painter to Phillip II, Artemisia Gentileschi was born in 1593. Unlike Anguissola, Artemisia Gentileschi was fortunate enough to have a well established painter as a father. Orazio Gentileschi was a follower of on of the leading Baroque painters Caravaggio, who s paintings utilized dramatic lighting and focused on the narrative of his realistically plain characters. Orazio trained his daughter in Caravaggio s style until he found that her talents surpassed his own. He then hired Agostino Tassi to take over her training and to teach her perspective in 1611. However, Tassi raped Artemisia, falsely promising to marry her afterward. Orazio sued Tassi for the rape of Artemisia and the theft of several pictures. The trial lasted for five months, and Artemisia had to endure the thumb screw, a lie detector test of the time. Tassi was found guilty and spent eight months in prison before being released. Even though Tassi was found guilty, Artemisia was labeled as a licentious woman ever since. Biofuels As A Fuel Source Biofuels as a Fuel Source: Paper 3 In a time of energy crisis and a subsequent search for a renewable replacement for crude oil, biofuels have arisen as a source of hope. Currently, the largest source of biofuels in the United States is corn based ethanol. The large scale of corn ethanol production and the potential promise of finding a domestic, reliable source of energy, requires the fuel s viability as a replacement for crude oil to be evaluated. However, there is debate surrounding corn based ethanol s environmental, economic, and social impacts. The scientists and governments who support the development of biofuels claim that it will not only provide a new and sustainable source of energy but also that it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and is therefore better for the environment. However, although corn based ethanol continues to harbor support from the United States government, environmentalists argue that ethanol is not substantially better for the environment, especially when the effects of its production are taken into account. Also, while some larger farms profit from ethanol production, it places economic stress upon smaller farms and the agricultural industry and leads to higher food prices that are a great detriment to those living at the level of subsistence. Therefore, in order to produce energy efficient, environmentally friendly fuel, the United States must work towards developing cellulosic biofuels and those produced by microbes as they have ... The reason s that they do what they do will probably remain a mystery for a long time, despite technological advancements. The reasoning for some psychotics slips and harms to others can possibly be explained by Owen J. Flanagan, as he states, The fact that slips sometimes take even the person himself by surprise is explained by the fact that unconscious wishes are usually unknown to the person himself. (Flanagan). This can help explain how the men act within the stories My Last Duchess and Porphyria s Lover. Furthermore, this is a comparative analysis of the lover s within Porphyria s Lover and My Last Duchess, both by Robert Browning. In both stories, the lover s perceive the women as objects, instead of actual people. In My Last Mistress, he believes that he has given her a gift by marrying her, and thus thinks that he owns her. He feels that she is taking this gift granted and gets angry when she does not worship him. This is further pointed out by Susan Brownmiller, ...that masculine esteem which gets its kick and sense of power from viewing females as anonymous, panting playthings, adult toys, dehumanized objects to be used, abused, broken and discarded. • 43. How Memories From The Brain Is Capable Of Retrieving... Every time I learn the name of a student, I forget the name of a fish was once said by David Jordan, the president of Stanford University (Anderson, Bjork Bjork, 2000). This statement is interesting because it brings up the idea of the amount of information one can consume and maintain available at any given time; this information is put into memory. Memory is the process of maintaining, recovering, and applying information about episodes and events, when the original material is not current (Goldstein, 2008, p. 136). This definition mean even if we have not just experience that memory, our brain can go back in time and retrieve what has happened hours, days or years ago. Retrieving memories from the brain is the process of relocating material from Long Term Memory (LTM) back into working memory, where it becomes available through consciousness (Goldstein, 2008, p. 197). Our brain is capable of retrieving information because it has been encoded. Encoding is the process of obtaining information then converting it into memories, in which goes onto our LTM (Goldstein, 2008, p. 196). The main claim of this essay is that is that if a memory is encoded correctly, then that is all that is needed for memory failure or success and the process of retrieving memories also relies on the encoding of the memory. Meanwhile, this claim that encoding is all that is needed for memory failure or success was researched by Craik and Lockhart (1972, as described by Goldstein, 2008, p. ... Throughout the novel, both she and her mother refer to the outside world as ghosts. The subtitle given to the book is Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts. To figure out the meaning behind this subtitle, one has to try to see what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is here where we see Kingston use the term ghost in a manner to mean stranger. She writes, America has been full of machines and ghosts – Taxi Ghosts, Bus Ghosts, Police Ghosts, Fire Ghosts, Meter Reader Ghosts, Tree Trimming Ghosts Five and Dime Ghosts. This description gives the reader the culture shock that someone who has just moved to the US can get. It may be a very unnerving experience to be surrounded by so many strange and alien things. Despite her mother using the term ghost to be vaguely insulting, it does not seem that way when Kingston uses this term for people. For example is in the chapter A Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipe. She labels her Negro friends as black ghosts. When she labels gives them this name, it is not as if she is using this term in a derogatory manner. Since her mother has always referred to strangers as ghosts, she has picked up the same habit. In this context, it is as if she refers to her friends in an affectionate manner when she calls them ghosts. Storytelling (or in the case of this novel, talk story ) also plays a crucial role in this book. Within each chapter, there are other smaller stories that are a part ... Biological Molecules Lab Report Questions for Thought: Lab 4 Identifying Biological Molecules Based on your results from Part 1, which substances responded to the Lugol s test and which to the Benedict s test? Did these same substances respond to the same reagents after the substances were hydrolyzed with hot HCL? Are your results consistent with how Lugol s and Benedict s reagents work? Explain your answers. In part 1, data sheet 1: Biological Molecules Test section C Lugol s the only positive polysaccharide was starch which tested as a deep blue back color. As for section D, Lugol s test after hydrolysis all the polysaccharides were negative yielding a yellow color. However looking at section A Benedict s Test before hydrolysis there were positive test results for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Milk pounder yielded a very light sheer orange at 80 degrees Celsius. For section B, Benedict s test after hydrolysis several reducing sugars produced positive test results including glucose, sucrose, raffinose, starch and milk powder. That being said most positive results were organic in color however raffinose produced a brown color (closer to dark orange). Looking at the overall data, starch responded to both reagents for section B, Benedict s after hydrolysis and section C, Lugol s meaning both were positive test results. However for section A, Benedict s test before hydrolysis, Starch did not yield a positive result. Our test results were almost exact with how Benedict s and Lugol s reagents work. Quoting straight from the lab manual, Benedict s reagent is a alkaline (basic) solution of copper ions that change colors in the presence of reducing sugars and heat. Low concentrations of reducing sugars give a yellow to orange precipitates; higher concentrations give red to brown precipitates. Nonreducing sugars give no precipitate or color change Thought our test results never yielded red negative results my lab partner and I did find test results that were yellow and orange positives or down negative results. But Jo needs to be punished by the law...I want the law, the community to say it was wrong... Antonello paused, but I don t want to make it any harder for her than it has to be. I felt sorry for her when I saw her at the Bridge. You re right, she s suffering too. They had talked about it for a long time and they agreed to write a short statement about their granddaughter, about her beauty and her potential, her intelligence, the joy she bought to their lives, and about their sadness and grief. On the way from the carpark to the courtroom that morning, Rae said, I hope she gets a long sentence. I know I should be more forgiving. That I should be moving on, and that I should think about what Ashleigh might have wanted. I m trying not to hate her but she has to be punished... and I don t want to see her again, never. I want her to be banished. I don t want to walk around dreading that I might run into her, that Jane or Alex might run into her. Rae and Alex were coming back to themselves, slowly.
