Essay on Howard s End by E. M. Forster
Howard s End by E. M. Forster
Howards End by E. M. Forster deals with the conflict of class distinctions and human relationships.
The quintessence of the main theme of this lovely novel is: Only connect!...Only connect the prose
and passion...and human love will be seen at its height.
Live in fragments no longer. This excerpt represents the main idea that Forster carries through the
book: relationships, not social status, are or at least should be the most important thing for
people.Howards End was written in 1910. That explains the naivete and idealism that permeate the
atmosphere of the novel. Written in the beginning of the twentieth century in England about the

Even if the Schlegels belonged to the upper class, and breaking the society into parts were to benefit
them in terms of some mercenary interests, they would still have a strong feeling of rejection of such a
social structure.
Relationships not social position are important for them. It seems that the philosophy of life of the
Wilcox family English through and through should reflect the views of patriotic Forster. However, it s
incorrect. The Schlegel sisters are the protagonists and the Wilcoxes are the antagonists of the novel
not in the sense that they are the bad guys , but in that their philosophy of life is opposite of Schlegels
and, therefore, the author s. Wilcoxes completely approve of the distinction between classes and are
extremely pragmatic. Their snobbism and pragmatism don t leave any chance to the happy
development of the engagement between Helen Schlegel and Paul Wilcox that ultimately contradicts
the main principle that is emphasized throughout the book: Be comrades! The characters of the novel
are believable as long as the author wants them to be believable.
By that I mean that Forster, naturally, wants to create a plausible image of England of that time and
therefore he must try to make the characters look plausible. He is successful in making the Schlegels
and the Wilcoxes look natural enough, but in doing so he does not care about

Children develop quickly at a young age. Young children under the age of six are capable of making
thoughtful decisions about their behavior and environment (Epstein, 2003). They may even try to
explain their behavior to others. In the case of Josh, a three year old boy that I will use for my
observation and assessment project, social skills are still in the process of being developed and he hasn
t begun to really start speaking at this point. After interviewing Josh s parents I was told that Josh says
very few words and doesn t speak at all in sentences. He does, however, include himself socially with

Observation Plan Josh s parents are concerned that Josh is developing slower than his peers in the
social development category because of his lack of communication verbally. I explained to his parents
that I will observe his behavior over a few week period in a social setting in the late morning at the
child care center in the gym while the mother is working out. She says that this will be the best place
to observe his behavior in a social setting because there are several other children there that are the
same age as Josh.
The mother states that Josh is alert most of the time. He wakes easily and can go to sleep easily or stay
awake late if the need arises. The parents want to know if he is developing socially at the same rate as
his peers or if they should be watching closer for any signs of special needs. The other concern that the
parents mentioned was regarding Josh being observed. They wanted to make sure that this would be
done without Josh realizing that I was observing him. I assured the parents that he would not know
that he was being observed. I will be looking to see how Josh engages and interacts with other
children in the child care room at the gym. I will see if he tries to speak while he is playing with them
and if he shows any type of aggression or retraction from being around others. The parents state that
Josh will throw things without any warning and for no apparent reason. I tried to ease their minds by

Naturalistic Observation Of Student s A Coffee Line
Naturalistic Observation of Student s in a Coffee Line In the United States, 85% of adults own a cell
phone, with 18 to 24 year olds texting the most (Zickuhr, 2011). Of these adults, 67% reported that
they check their phone even if they do not hear it ringing, 44% sleep with the phone beside their bed,
and 29% reported they could not live without their cell phone (Smith, 2012). In addition, according to
the Baylor University report, studies show that young adults check their phone an average of 60 times
a day. This study examined cell phone use among university students that were alone and in a group.
Specifically, we were interested in observing whether students alone in a coffee line or students in a
group in a coffee line, spent more or less time on their cell phone. We were also interested to observe
if gender affected cell phone usage and whether males or females were more likely to be in a group.
The purpose of this study was to determine if university students that are alone spend more or less
time on their phone than students that are in a group. We also examined if gender was an important
factor on whether a student was in a group or alone. Using naturalistic observation, we calculated the
amount of time individual students were on their phone per three minute time interval. The hypothesis
was that students alone in a coffee line would spend the most time on their phone. We also predicted
that women were more likely than men to be in a group.

Food Protein Derived Bioactive Peptides ( Bps )
Abstract
Food protein derived bioactive peptides (BPs) have been reported to trigger certain physiological
responses in the body, thereby influencing health positively. These peptides have attracted high
research and consumer interests due to their huge potential of use in functional foods and other dietary
interventions of disease control and health promotion. However, successful product development is
limited by the fact that current manufacturing processes are either difficult to scale up, high in cost, or
have the potential to affect the structure activity properties of these peptides. To overcome these
challenges, we have proposed in this review, the use of omic techniques and high throughput
simulation models to forecast the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Introduction
Over the years, it has become a known fact that health and nutrition are intricately linked. Not only do
food nutrients supply the necessary biomolecules for various metabolic activities, but, in some cases,
food nutrients are able to trigger certain desirable physiological responses in the body. Food proteins
and hydrolysates thereof are amongst the most well studied bioactive molecules (Danquah and Agyei,
2012). Bioactive peptides have been defined as protein hydrolysates which, upon entry and absorption
into the body, have the ability to induce certain desirable and physiologically measurable hormone like
activities(Korhonen and Pihlanto, 2006). Some biological functions induced by these peptides include
immunomodulatory, cytomodulatory, opiate, antihypertensive, antimicrobial, antithrombotic and metal
chelation activities (Möller et al. , 2008). As natural products of food origin, bioactive peptides have a
huge potential in health promoting functional foods and therapeutic products(Korhonen,
2009).However, this potential is not being realised as a result of certain bioprocess challenges. The
lack of commercially viable processes for large scale

Examples Of The First Circle Of Hell In Dante s Inferno
In Dante s Inferno, Dante proposes an intriguing order for his nine circles of hell. Ignoring Limbo,
Dante, intending to list the circles from the least grievous sin to the most grievous sin, orders the
circles starting from lust, going to gluttony, greed, then wrath. Dante provides a thought provoking
experience for the reader causing one to redefine his understanding of sin and God s judgement.
After limbo, Dante presents the first circle of hell as the punishment for the lustful. While many, if
given the choice, would not place lust as the least of all the sins, Dante does for good reason. In
Appendix C, Aquinas expounds on Dante s argument that sins committed in passion are not as grave
as premeditated sin. First, as sin consists chiefly in an act of the will, it follows that, other things being
equal, a sin is all the more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While this punishment does not seem as severe as the other circles, it is symbolic of the greedy s
fruitless pursuit of earthly riches. Dante places this in an even lower circle of hell because in regards
to the sin of miserliness or squandering money, the abusers are even more aware of their sin.
Furthermore, sin s underlying principle is even more visible here. According to Aquinas reasoning of
sin in Dante s Inferno, pride is at the root of all sin. Whereas pride regards sin as turning away from
God, to Whose commandment man refuses to be subject, for which reason it is called the beginning,
because the beginning of evil consists in turning away from God (Aquinas, 385). Aquinas articulates
that pride is the basis for all sin, because pride takes place when we refuse to be subject to the will of
God, and the beginning of all sin is when we first turn away from God. Those who are greedy and
miserly refuse to obey God s command of taking care of the poor and rather horde as much money as
they can to no

The Attack on Pearl Harbor Essay
December 7, 1941, was one of the worst attacks on the United States in U.S. history. Of that day 2,403
soldiers were killed in action, 1,178 were wounded in action. Numerous U.S. armed forces personnel

Japanese hit the U.S. where they knew it would hurt the most, but it crippled the United States entire

Not only did the United States freeze all Japanese assets under U.S. control but it halted all sales of oil
to Japan as well. The United States tried to resolve the issues with Japan over these differences, but a
resolution could not be reached and war was inevitable (Borg). Why didn t the U.S. suspect Pearl
Harbor of being the place of attack? Since the United States halted all exports to Japan, Japan declared
war on the United States. Due to the lack of information, lack of technology, and talks of peace by
Japan, the United States had no idea where Japan was going to hit. In January 1941, reports were
received that Japan might attack Pearl Harbor but military officials ignored these reports. They
considered attacks on the Philippines and other European countries to be more likely, underestimating
Japan s ability to conceal preparations for such an operation. Due to the success of the cryptanalysis
machine called, Magic, American leaders started breaking Japanese military operational codes. The
codes that were deciphered showed Japan was likely to take some type of military action (Irive). At
that time, Japan had only a 12 month supply of petroleum to fuel its economy and war operations left.
So the U.S. anticipated Japan would act quickly! The only questions that could not be answered were
when and where (Woods). Pearl Harbor had been a major naval base since before 1898. In early

Central American Employment Laws Essay
There are many differences regarding employment laws worldwide. Some countries have created and

American countries have many laws and departments that organize the labour force of their countries,
while the United States provide of laws and agencies dedicated to regulate everything regarding the
labour areas of the country. Central American countries provide of several benefits for the employee
by law that companies in the public and private sector are required to fulfil. Some benefits that are
required every year are, in the case of Nicaragua, the thirteenth month of payment known as
Aguinaldo in Spanish, and one month of paid vacations. Alike Central American Countries, the United
States do not provide the thirteenth month of payment, and the vacations are less than one moth

some benefits to all working pregnant mothers. These benefits include a pre/post natal period which

Comparing Sacrifices In The Magi And The Minor Canon
Sacrifices can come in many different forms; whether it be an object, time, a way of living, or even a
life. These sacrifices are usually made out of love. Della s sacrifice was giving up her appearance and
the way people would think of her for her husband. The Minor Canon made his sacrifice of leaving a
town for the townspeople he cared about. Both of these sacrifices were not for personal gain, but to
improve the lives of those around them. Sacrifices are a prominent part of both The Gift of The Magi
and The Griffin and The Minor Canon.
In The Gift of The Magi, Della gave up her hair for her husband, which may seem like an odd
sacrifice for an odd reason without further explanation. Della had beautiful hair, but not a lot of
money, so she sold her hair for enough money to buy a gift for Jim, her husband. In The Griffin and

The most common definition of the word hand in the American Heritage Dictionary is: the terminal
part of the human arm below the wrist, consisting of the palm, four fingers, and an opposable thumb,
used for grasping and holding. There are eighteen other literal meanings for the word hand as well as
innumerable metaphorical meanings. In Great Expectations Dickens uses literal meanings, symbolism,
and repetition of the word hand in order to develop his characters; in particular, the repetition of the
word hand assists Dickens illustrate two of his major themes: the importance of education and the idea
that wealth and position are corrupting.
Dickens uses hand imagery to develop several of his major and minor characters. The characters range
from Drummle (Pip s adversary) all the way to the main character, Pip himself. Drummle is depicted
as a man of shady character. During a conversation at the Jaggers estate, Drummle hides his hands in
his pockets. Drummle attempts to use physical violence to settle an argument rather than
communicating like a true gentleman (G.E. 201). Though Drummle is a minor character, his actions

The Responsibilities Of Multinational Corporations ( Mncs )
One of the main objectives of any business organization includes making profits and enhancing the
economic growth (Davis, 2012). Most businesses aim at discharging their economic and legal
responsibilities. It is because for a business to continue as going concern, the business have to obey
the law and be profitable. However, being ethically and philanthropically responsible can also affect
the businesses apart from economic and legal factors. The responsibilities of multinational
corporations (MNCs), instead of small or medium size corporations, will be the main focus of this
paper. It is assumed that the MNCs currently have no difficulties in discharging their economic and
legal responsibilities. Thus, the MNCs are in a better position to take a step further to discharge other
responsibilities like ethical and philanthropic, while those small size businesses may still struggling in
meeting the economic and legal responsibilities. As Heal (2004) suggests that MNCs are in a good
position to minimize the difference between private and social cost. He argues that MNCs can
distribute wealth from well developed countries to poor developed countries by paying reasonable
wages to workers in poor countries. Also, MNCs have more resources than small businesses. So,
MNCs can reduce or compensate for their environmental impacts without affecting their abilities to
discharge their economic responsibilities. Therefore, this paper seeks to provide a critical evaluation
on whether modern

Cannibalism Is Not Illegal ( Eveleth )
The Other, Other, White Meat
We had to eat these dead bodies, and that was it , this is what Andes plane crash survivor, Roberto
Canessa, had to say on his experience with cannibalism. Cannibalism is the consumption of a member
of the same species. Consuming human flesh is not against the law in the United States, therefore
cannibalism is not illegal (Eveleth). In the eyes of the law, murdering someone to eat is wrong, but the
act of eating a human is not. To Americans the simple thought of eating another human is sickening.
To most that is true, but to others consuming human flesh is a way of life. Some cultures practice
cannibalism for their own spiritual beliefs and others have to eat human flesh to survive. Human flesh
has proteins most want when eating meat. The act of eating human meat has gotten a bad reputation
over the years, looking back in history, people thousands of years ago have different views.
Cannibalism is a way to survive, with the proteins necessary to do so, and a way for cultures to
express their beliefs. Cannibalism is a taboo topic most people do not know enough about. People eat
people for a variety of reasons, the most well known being killers getting a thrill from eating their
victims. Although not everyone who is a cannibal gets a high from eating humans, Americans still see
it as evil. Jeffrey Dahmer is the most well known example of this, a man who gets a sexual desire
from killing and eating his victims. Everyone across America knew of

Roswell Incident Research Paper
The Roswell Incident This world we live in can be a mystery, and because of that there are people out

massive rush down south to figure out exactly what happened and where this Unidentified Flying
Object (UFO) came from. When this event got public the local townspeople got out that the entire
thing was from another planet entirely. After the government stated that the material was from a
weather balloon, some people thought it was a cover up for what it actually was. I d like to make three
brief points on why I think the Roswell incident and this discovery of UFOs is fake. First off, I d like
to say how people originally thought of the UFOs as Extra Terrestrial beings. Although I guess people
looked over the fact that the material that the UFO contained a human made material. The people of

not something the government couldn t identify, and how the current time period was during an active
war where anything could ve happened. With this I d like to say that I believe that the Roswell
incident was fake and completely over exaggerated and how people thought it was cool to go out and
pretend to see UFOs was kind of dumb. I know for sure that they were either planes or other man

The Economic Effects Of The Housing Bubble Collapse
Between 2004 and 2006, the Federal Reserve decided to increase the interest rate at which it would
lend money to banks. The effects of this led to higher interest rates passed on to consumers by the
banks. Though this is only part of the issue, it contributed to the housing bubble collapse. The
economic effects of what occurred were not fully realized until August of 2008.When the housing
market crashed; it had tremendously adverse effects on the US as well as the World economy
(Bajaj). Why did raising interest so slightly affect so many people? The simple answer is that a lot of
people were living beyond their means. Banks and subprime lenders were lending money to people
who realistically could not pay the loans back. President Calvin Coolidge said, There is no dignity
quite so impressive, and no one independence quite so important, as living within your means .
First, we must address what it looks like to live within our means. A study conducted by CNN
reported that 76 percent of Americans live paycheck to paycheck (Johnson). On top of that, many do
not have sufficient savings to cover six months of expenses. According to Johnson s survey, people do
not have enough to save after all of their expenses. Here in lies the problem. If you do not have
enough money to meet pay for your expenses and save, you are spending too much. Catherine New

Essay The Crucible
Fear can lead to a lot of things, but unfortunately, in humans it usually leads to something bad.
Throughout history, fear has lead to some of the most violent actions by man, and some of the biggest
collapses of organized society. In early American history, the people of Salem experienced this for
themselves. Arthur Miller shows this in his book. The society of Salem that Miller creates in The
Crucible shows how fear can slowly cause rational thought to deteriorate, leading to mass hysteria and
eventually the breakdown of civilized behavior. During Act I, Miller shows how each Salem s citizens
begin to realize this fear they have, and how it is slowly starting to take over their minds. This new

Once the people of Salem fully realize their fear, Miller shows how they try to justify this fear, but that
they are in fact becoming more and more hysterical. They now try to find a justification for thoughts
and their fear of evil. They need some solid proof to back up these accusations that they make, and
they need to clear their own names as well. So, they arbitrarily start claiming that [they] saw...with the
Devil , and that [they] saw...with the Devil (45). These unjustified explanations for their fears just
shows how truly corrupted their minds become. They start naming their own friends, neighbors, and
even their own family in order to clear themselves and more importantly to try to prove that this
witchery is really upon them, and to prove that they are not just crazy. What it really does is show how
hysteria is setting in, and how they have actually accepted these lies as the truth. While questioning
each other on the matter, their breakdown can really be seen through their quick, almost sputtering
manner of speaking: Hale: Did you call the Devil last night? Abigail: I never called him! Parris: She
called the Devil? Abigail: I didn t see no Devil! Hale: You cannot evade me...(40)
This pace at which they speak proves how they have no real justification, only that they can accuse
someone and use that as proof. They speak in little fragments that can barely be considered

The Three Categories Of Civil Peace
With every object that people have and every experience that people go though, they can be
categorized into three categories: needs, wants, and negatives. Wants and needs, the two positive
categories, are prioritized differently by everyone. People often misinterpret some parts of these
categories, believing certain wants are needs and vice versa. For example, some people see makeup as
a need to go outside, it is really just a want. This is how addictions form. When people categorize a
want as need, however subconsciously, they end up truly needing that, whether it be drugs, alcohol, or
even sugar. On the other hand, when people prioritize their wants, they often will be happier in life,
even though they are in worse situations than many of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

my heart really cared for, (Golden Touch 452). He comes upon this realization by putting his wants
over his needs, and realizes that that can be harmful. In this story, he changes to prioritize his needs
foremost after going through the trauma of almost losing his daughter. Additionally, in Warriors Don t
Cry, Melba s family feared for her safety, but they also felt that the push for integration was a god
given mission, (Melba 3). Melba was already experiencing bullying, and this would increase that, but
they felt that they needed to integrate Melba. After the suffering that she endured from other students,
people realized that skin color does not matter. Moreover, Civil Peace s Jonathan, after getting robbed
by thieves, questions, What is egg rasher? Did I depend on it last week? Or is it greater than other
things that went with the war? I say let egg rasher perish in the flames! (Civil Peace 394). He feels that
he is okay with the Ex Gratia(egg rasher) going away because he does depend on it. Even though he
underwent bad things because of it, he was prioritizing his needs above his wants. When people

issues. One psychological concept that is a very large part of Duke and Gonzo s trip is their excessive
drug use. The movie begins with Duke narrating and driving a fire apple red convertible that they
rented, in the desert around Bartslow, California. It was then, he stated, the drugs began to take hold.
In the first five minutes of the movie Duke opens the trunk of the car, while swatting at bats that
weren t there and does an inventory of the drugs packed in a suit case. The suitcase included 2 bags of
grass, 75 pellets of Mescaline, 5 sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine,
a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, reamers and laughers, one quarter tequila, one
quarter rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and 2 dozen amyls (Fear and Loathing). The serious
drug collection they had was to push them as far as they could go. Duke and Gonzo had such a high
tolerance to multiple drugs that they could take these large amounts without serious consequences.
Every drug they took fell into one of the four major drug classes. Opiates, depressants,

My Introduction to the Legal Process Class Essay
On Tuesday the 28th of February our Introduction to the Legal Process class went to the Maine
Legislature and had the chance to meet some Representatives and Senators that we had contacted
previously. We had studied lobbying and how to effectively lobby a bill beforehand, and met with the
officials we had contacted individually. This is some information that could help you lobby a bill in
the Maine legislature. I was assigned four representatives and one senator to contact beforehand, and it
is essential to do this early. With the massive amount of emails and calls an official gets in a day, it is
easy to get lost in the crowd. Many legislators will not contact you back due to their busy schedule. I
only received responses from two of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That means you need to research on the bill you are presenting, and why this bill was created. You
should also know the legislator you are lobbying to. One of my representatives, Gay Grant, was a co
sponsor on the Ocean Acidification I was presenting so she was more familiar with the bill than my
other representative. The other, Kim Monaghan Derrig, was on the Workforce and Job committee so I
had to tailor how I lobbied the bill to talk about how it would affect jobs in Maine. Doing research on
the person you are lobbying to can make your case stronger by making it personal. It is also good to
memorize the face of the official you are meeting so you can find them in a crowd. I had studied the
faces of my representatives before meeting them, but I still didn t recognize Rep. Derrig until she
came up to me and asked if she knew where she could find Tyler amongst our group of students.
Being prepared also means bringing the right materials. Wearing formal clothing is usually required
for entering political buildings, and it also sets the tone for how serious you are about the time this
person is setting aside for you and the bill you are trying to present. In the Maine Legislature it is a
little more lax, but you should still dress respectfully when lobbying. Beyond clothes, bringing hard
copies of the bill and an informational page on the bill you are lobbying that gives the key points of

American Involvement In Ww2
Although the U.S. had yet to become officially involved in the war, most Americans supported the
Allies and saw the Germans as antagonists. Americans felt a connection to Great Britain, in particular,
because of cultural similarities. When the Germans sunk the Lusitania, a British cruise ship, in 1915,
128 Americans were among those who lost their lives, causing America to become even angrier
towards the Germans. At the same time, the British intercepted a message from Germany to Mexico
called the Zimmerman Note, asking the government of Mexico to declare war on the U.S. if war broke
out between the U. S. and Germany. The note also promised to help Mexico regain the territory of
Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico if Mexico declared war on the United States. This note was the final
push that caused America to fall into the want of war. Thus, on April 6, 1917, the U.S. Congress
declared war on Germany. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay on The Back to the Future Trilogy
The Back to the future trilogy is by far my favorite of all time; especially the first one, that movie
alone is on my Mount Rushmore of movies. The trilogy is about a teenager who accidently travels
back in time prevents his parents from getting married which then prevents him from being born, so
now he has to figure out a way to get back to the future and get his parents back together. The entire
trilogy is great; even thought it has its bad moments, but hey, what trilogy does not? The series is a
clever and fun string of movies that leaves you with a good feeling after watching them. Now with
that being said, when you make a movie about time travel there are bound to be some mistakes and

movie and beginning of the third, Doc (Christopher Lloyd) gets struck by a bolt of lighting while

now stuck again in 1955. Right after that happens Marty gets a letter from Doc stating specific

that Doc was killed a week after he wrote the letter. Marty then decides to travel back to 1855 and

Doc and Marty spend the rest of the third movie tiring to find a way to get the Delorean up to 88mph

The first one is if Marty and the younger Doc find out about older Docs death in 1955, wouldn t the
older doc already know about it? Yet in the third movie when Marty tells the older doc about this in
1855 he seems shocked as if he didn t already know about this in 1955. Second, when Marty travels

The problem here is what happened to the Delorean that doc hid in the

The Is Not Always Better, And Favors The Underdogs
In the discussions of underdogs, one controversial issue has been that being the underdog means you
hold less power and rarely win. On the one hand, Gladwell argues, more is not always better, and
favors the underdogs. On the other hand, In Derksen s story on the Three strike Law contends
Reynolds, who was not considered an underdog, held much power in being able to help successfully
establish the law in honor of his murder daughter. Others even maintain that s power hold no position
for winning or losing, it s how you play the game. Admiring the Derksen family who didn t have much
power or say, and were just very grateful for finding their child s body after weeks of not knowing
what had happen to her. It helped bring the family closure. My own view is when you have more you
can do more. William Petit who was much like Reynolds, used his power and voice to make a change
in the honor of his deceased family. Whether the change last forever or its tempary, it still can makes a
different in somebody life at that moment. Gladwell critizesed Reynolds and the others who helped
enforced the Three Strike Law, because of what he described as a domino effect. They illustrate the
fact that more is not always better; there comes a point, in fact, when the extra resources that the
powerful think of as their greatest advantage only serve to make things worse. (Gladwell 238)

Feral Children Research Paper
Feral Children: Examples of Extreme Neglect Socialization is the lifelong process of social interaction
through which individuals acquire a self identity and the physical, mental, and social skills needed for
survival in society (Kendall 87). In other words, this is the time when the individual figures out who
they are, what they feel, and what they think in order to participate in society. This is where we learn
role taking, how to control our behavior, and how to communicate with others (Kendal 87). A feral
child is a child who has lived isolated from human contact, experiences little to no human care, love,
or social behavior, and human language. Some feral children, as stated by the Free Dictionary, this

Everything the child sees, they imitate. During this time, they learn to walk, talk, learn, and develop
their own personality. A critical part of socialization comes from George Herbet Mead s Role Taking
and Stages of the Self theory (Kendall 95 96). The first step is the preparatory stage where children
learn to imitate the people around them, usually parents and other family members. The second stage
is the play stage where children start to develop language skills and take the role of another person
that they look up to. The final stage is the game stage, where children begin to understand who they
are, and who other people are as well. In this stage, children learn to play sports and participate in
other activities that require them to have an idea of what society expects of them (Kendall 95 96). If a
child is denied the ability to go through these stages, they do not receive the proper socialization that
they will need to survive in the world. Socialization among children is very important. A child must
learn how to walk, talk, eat, use the restroom, read, write, and do many other important skills. Without
socialization, these children will not be able to develop intelligence and will not learn how to perform
basic daily functions. Children must be taught and know the values, beliefs, and norms of the
surrounding culture in order to know what is expected of them

Raymond Carr Summit Events
Summit Event Essay The event that was held in Moody Coliseum, September 22, 2015, was
conducted by Raymond Carr, his sermon was over, Lost in Knowledge of Christ. He pulls from
Philippians 3:1 11, where Paul challenges us to lose our religion; and choose a relationship. Paul uses
two directives that lead to a right relationship with Christ. Raymond Carr first comments on how Paul
emphasizes the theme of joy. Carr tells us that Paul repeats this a couple of times. Paul emphasizes
that, whatever your circumstance, you should always rejoice in God s attributes and His provisions.
Paul continues by saying: To write the same things again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for
you. Paul s frequent saying to rejoice during affliction, because if he continues to tell us this we can
work to rejoice and not forget it, or even cynical. Paul wants for the believer to stand strong in their
time of need, to be steady and secure in their faith as well. Carr hints at that the simple reason for
repetition is that: Words sink in over time. Truths need to be emphasized, impact, and retention. Carr
then goes to 3:2 6, where Paul explores the danger of religion and religious people. He warns about
the Judaizers, by saying, Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the false
circumcision. Paul is warning the church to look over your shoulder because people in the church aren
t really what they say they are. Paul calls the Judaizers dogs. Dogs were not the cute

Lama talks about happiness through the style of experience, real life stories, and the studies. His friend
tried through money and travel to get happiness, but he returned to the normal level of happiness. The
experience of his friend did not succeed to raise the level of happiness, so we can not get happiness by
the money and did everything; according to Lama, I bought a new house and stuff but overall I don t
think I m much happier than I was before. Studies give convincing style to the reader so I think the
style of Lama was more persuasive in writing. Particularly, when the writer can combine the studies
and stories from real life for the reader does not feel bored. The studies say that genetics affect the
happiness, for example, the twin have the same level of well being; in the words of Lama, Some
researchers have recently argued that an individual s characteristic level of happiness or well being is
genetically determined . Conversely, Laozi has a completely different style of writing although he has
the same goal. He talks about happiness by philosophical style like clergymen or preachers. When
Laozi said Hope is as hollow as fear I was amazed by this analogy, but I could understand this analogy
through the comparison between contrasting. This style makes us think deeply. Spirituality makes the

An alternative is to use air as the cooling medium but their performance drops in hot weather
conditions. Maximization of overall efficiency is as vital as the cost and availability of water.
Therefore there is a need to integrate the technologies of air cooled and water cooled condensers. This
paper will focus on parallel condensing where steam from the turbine is ducted in parallel to both air
cooled and water cooled condensers. To optimize the parallel condensing capacities of air cooled and
water cooled condensers considering parameters such as ambient temperature, pressure, availability of
water, fan power, pumping costs.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Exhaust steam from the steam turbine is separated into two streams. One stream flows into a water
cooled surface condenser while the other is directed to an air cooled condenser. The heated cooling
water is cooled as it flows through a cooling tower, where air is forced through the tower by
mechanical or natural draft. Fig .1

One of the mirror is a stationary mirror and other one is a movable mirror. The beam splitter is used to
transmit half of the light and reflect half of the light. Subsequently, the transmitted light and the
reflected light strike the stationary mirror and the movable mirror. When reflected back by the mirrors,
two beams of light recombine with each other at the beam splitter.[27]
If the distances travelled by two beams are the same, it means that the distances between two mirrors
and the beam splitter are the same and the situation is defined as zero path difference (ZPD). But
imagine if the movable mirror moves away from the beam splitter, the light beam which strikes the
movable mirror will travel a longer distance than the light beam which strikes the stationary mirror.
The distance which the movable mirror is away from the ZPD is defined as the mirror displacement
and is represented by ∆. It is obvious that the extra distance travelled by the light which strikes the
movable mirror is 2∆. The extra distance is defined as the optical path difference (OPD) and is
represented by delta. Therefore, δ =

Comparing Roosevelt s Next, And The New Nationalism
I argue that when it comes to developing our capabilities, Roosevelt s argument that the main purpose
for freedom is to benefit the community is the most viable because it helps maintain democratic
processes, while also providing a higher quality of life for all. While Sen and Roosevelt are similar
because they both believe that a society can only develop if the people are given equal opportunity to
develop their capabilities, they differ when it comes to the purpose of fulfilling those capabilities. In
this essay, I will outline Sen s argument as to why development should be viewed in terms of
maximizing our freedoms to achieve our desired lives, in contrast to Roosevelt s argument. Then, I
will advance my own argument as to why Roosevelt s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At first, Sen s argument seems appealing because we are all able to keep the fruits of our labor, and
decide what kind of life we want to live. This fits in line with man s natural tendencies toward
selfishness, and it seems that it would be difficult to develop one s capabilities simply for the case of
the commonwealth, and not for oneself. As naturally self interested beings, we would always want to
develop all of our capabilities so that we may live the lives we have reason to desire. However, only
using our freedom for self interested motives leads to numerous issues. For example, one of the most
important aspects of a democracy is exercising one s right to vote; however, if one is only concerned
with oneself, they will vote in a way that only them, and perhaps other members of one s social class,
will benefit the most. Thus, people could end up voting for a leader who plans to make them, and
others like them, wealthier by keeping wealth within a small percentage of the population. Not only
does this hinder development as Sen sees it, but it also has many negative implications for a society;
for example, it may lead to higher levels of poverty, crime, unrest, dissatisfaction, and eventually lead
to civil tension (all of which are unfreedoms). Similarly, some members of the community may have
no interest in politics, or may think they do not pertain

Thesis Statement On Standardised Testing
Standardised Testing
Thesis
Standardised testing is something every high school student has to go through as it is a crucial and
stressful part of the college application process. During their junior year, high school student s stress
levels increase as they have to take both the SATs/ACTs and AP tests. The SAT was introduced in
1926 and since then it has slowly become more integrated into the standard procedure in order to get
into a university. The AP is an understandable test as it tests students on what they studies in class; the
SAT on the other hand requires students to do all the learning and studying on their own time. Some
students may even pay hundreds of dollars on the test prep books and classes on top of the already

What is being done now?
According to FairTest.org, there are over 900 universities in the US, out of about 4,000, that don t
require SAT or ACT scores.
The University of New Hampshire stopped accepting standardised test scores altogether; the president
of the university commented that after doing so the quantity of applications went down, but the quality
went up as they found that the applicants collectively were more mature and motivated mainly
because the application process became harder with the increased focus on essay submission.
There has been an SAT optional movement in which many liberal arts colleges in the US decided not
to require SAT or ACT scores as they thought it had outlived its usefulness.
The former president of Sarah Lawrence College stated that We are a writing intensive school, and the
information produced by SAT scores added little to our ability to predict how a student would do at
our college; it did, however, do much to bias admission in favor of those who could afford expensive

A Leadership Position At The Accounting Department
In my organization, I am a supervisor over the accounting department, therefore I am in a leadership
position so I went ahead and took the report card based upon my own reflection. On the report card, I

I take pride it is my work and my word. While I am at work I strive to set an example by being there

what pushes me for this dedication is how I was raised, but also the understanding that being a state

we owe it to them not to make a waste of their hard earn money.

People around the world turn to the practice as a way to relieve pain, stress and the symptoms of
various medical conditions. The physicians at our San Antonio fertility have been reviewing studies
about acupuncture and fertility, which suggests that acupuncture can improve IVF success rates and
increase egg production.
The idea behind acupuncture is simple. People experience problems with their physical and
psychological health when the flow of energy in the body is blocked. To unblock the energy and
restore balance, a licensed acupuncturist inserts tiny needles in different points on the body. When
acupuncture is performed for fertility, the acupuncturist targets points that help the reproductive
system and stress.
Our fertility specialists realize that most of our patients are not eager to be stuck with more needles;
however, acupuncture needles are different than those used to give injections of fertility medications.
The disposable needles used in Chinese medicine are very small, and most people report experiencing
little to no pain with acupuncture. There are also minimal side effects.

To what degree does this perspective on dystopian novels and films resonate with your own reading?
Dystopian texts fulfil the purpose of exaggerating contemporary issues and appropriating them into a
fictional universe, in order to criticise and foreshadow the destructive trajectory of current political

detrimental effects that arise from technology s augmenting role in society. This is shown through the
hierarchy and power division of the silo in Wool. The IT faculty play a fundamental role in
orchestrating the façade in which the rest of the silo lives under and are responsible for enforcing the
suppressive regime of the silo. Howey conveys the dangerous influence technology can have on
society when he says, His discovery was that evil men arose from evil systems (Howey, 2013). His

Clarifying The Digestive s Procedure Framework
My name is Anson and today I will be clarifying the digestive s procedure framework.
We start with the mouth, in the feature, I am chewing on a bit of bread from a sandwich, the sandwich
softens up two distinct ways, mechanical and concoction absorption. Mechanically, teeth are utilized
to bite sustenance into little pieces and blend it with salivation with the tongue s assistance. The
tongue then sends this pounded up sandwich down the throat to the stomach. Synthetically, Salivary
organs in the mouth produce spit, containing the protein amylase to separate starch, is blended with
sustenance, making it gentler and smoother prepared for its adventure down to the stomach.
So now the chewed sandwich has gone down my pharynx, or throat, and

Coast Guard Research Paper
Coast Guard Petty Officer Stephen Lehmann said the location of the boat prompted searchers to
recalculate their plans, the Palm Beach Sun Sentinel reported. Although the two boys fish together
often in the Jupiter Inlet area, they were not prepared for an extended outing, Barney said. Initial
reports were that they went to the Bahamas, but the family says they did not have supplies for that,
Barney told the Sun Sentinel. They did not pack water or food for two days. He said the single engine
boat provided only a small area of cover over the center console. Cohen s stepfather, Nick Korniloff,
told reporters on Sunday that the boys were experienced on the water but were not allowed to take the
boat out into the ocean. He said the teens would have never been allowed to boat to the Bahamas
alone, but a social media post from one of the boys indicated they might have been headed to the
Bahamas, according to the Coast Guard. Authorities initially believed they may have been headed
there, but learned from the boys parents that the pair typically do not go farther than an offshore ledge

Sunday, We are going to find them today. We are going to bring them home. The effort has even

What Is Pecola s Standards For Beauty In The Bluest Eye
In Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye, Morrison presents a young black girl, Pecola, who embodies the
issue of racial self contempt in the 1940s. Pecola prays for blue eyes because she longs to be viewed
with the same beauty as that of white people; however, as Morrison states, Implicit in her desire [is]
racial self loathing. (Morrison 210) She hates her dark skin and her dark eyes because she has
conformed to her society s definition of beauty: light skin and light eyes. On the other hand, Morrison
introduces Claudia, another black girl who demonstrates the opposite outlook. Claudia sees Pecola s
wish for blue eyes as radical and shameful; namely, she is astonished by the desecration (Morrison
209) that Pecola wants to impose on her body. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Pecola chooses conformity into her society s standards for beauty, Claudia chooses to maintain
her own natural beauty despite the disadvantages it will cause. Although Morrison depicts both of
these opposite characters in a critical light, she never offers a solution to escape these two extreme
cases of handling racism. Moreover, in the Afterword of the book, Morrison states, The novel tried to
hit the raw nerve of racial self contempt, expose it, and then soothe it [emphasis added]... (Morrison
211) But Morrison does not soothe the issue at all; she leaves the reader to decide the better option to
resist racial self hatred. The opposition between Pecola and Claudia s reactions to racism demonstrates
that Morrison did not have a solution or a middle ground within the text; rather, she hoped for readers
to make their own conclusions based on the events of the

The Effect Of Inverse Square Law On A Beam Of X Ray Photons
Experiment 1
Introduction:
The aim of this experiment is to investigate the effect of the inverse square law on a beam of x ray
photons. The inverse square law states that the intensity of an x ray beam is inversely proportional to
the square of the distance (Ball, J.L., Moore, A.D. and Turner, S., 2008). Similar triangles (Appendix
A Image 1) are a proof of the inverse square law as it shows that if the distance from the beam is
doubled, the intensity falls to one quarter of its original value. If it is trebled the intensity falls to one
ninth and at four times the distance it is one sixteenth its value, etc (Holmes, K., Elkington, M. and
Harris P., 2013). The formula used to calculate this is:
This law only applies if the radiation is from a point source, the radiation of the beam is homogenous
(the photons must all have the same energy) and if there is no attenuation between the source of
radiation and the detector (Holmes, K., Elkington, M. and Harris P., 2013). However, the x ray beam
cannot satisfy these three conditions of the inverse square law. This is because the x rays produced are
not emitted from a true point source as the focal spot has a finite size. They are not emitted equally in
all directions as the anode heel effect causes the intensity to vary across the beam and the absorption
and scattering of the x ray beam occur as it passes through the air (Graham, D., Cloke, P. and Vosper,
M., 2012). Despite this, the inverse square law can still be applied

New Deal Outline
It all started on a day called Black Tuesday, which was on October 29 1929. On this day, the American
stock market crashed after years of upward growth. The Great Depression was one of the darkest
times in American history. It was a frustrating time for all Americans. For one thing, there was the
government not doing enough at the start of the event. The unemployment rate was ridiculously high
because there was not enough money to hire people. According to PBS, more than 3.2 million
Americans were unemployed. Race in the Great Depression was a rising issue. African American
citizens were getting tired of the lack of rights that they had, so civil rights leaders started fighting
back by speaking up. Overall the New Deal was an important part ... Show more content on

Racism was also a big problem during the Great Depression, but was not addressed as much as it
should of, because of the main issues of the Great Depression. The NAACP came in with anti
lynching laws, which was a no brainer to say that the laws should be made, but they were not until
later dates. The NAACP led the civil rights act for a long time in the early twentieth century with anti
lynching laws, segregation in schools, and overall human rights.
In conclusion, the New Deal saved the great depression after failing the first try. It was successful
because of organization, deals and most of all, a great president named Franklin Delano Roosevelt,

Blindspot Lab
Abstract:
This lab report will focus on answering the question Is the blindspot variable in humans? I use three
participants to conduct an experiment to test that theory. After the experiment I gathered all the data
and calculations for review. My results showed that the blindspot is variable in humans.
Introduction:
● I am trying to answer the question Is the blind spot variable in humans?
● We are able to see the world around us thanks to our eyes. First light enters the cornea which is the
outermost layer of the eye. The cornea bends the light and it travels through the pupil to the lens
which again bends and shapes the light as it moves to the retina. The retina contains thousands of light
sensing nerves (rods and cones). These cells ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Developmental psychology focuses on development during the course of one s life. How personalities
and behaviors change over the course of someone s life.
The sixth is clinical. Clinical psychology focuses on mental illness, disease and the overall mental
health of an individual.
The seventh is individual differences/ personality. This field focuses on what personality means. The
uniqueness of each individual how no two people are the same. (Initiative, n.d)
This experiment would fall into the biological field of psychology as it focuses on the human eye.
Categorical variables are observations that can be sorted into categories like age or gender.
Quantitative variables are observations that can be measured like size or weight. In this experiment the
categorical variable was the age and gender of my participants. The quantitative value was the size of
the blindspot when measured. (Statistics, n.d.)
Independent variables are variables you can control. Like the dosage of a medication given during a
study. Dependant variables are variables you cannot control. Like the participants reaction to the
medication. In this experiment the independent variable was the blindspot test given to participants.
The dependant variable was the participant s individual blindspot size. (Helmenstine,

Baby Activity Gym Essay
A Baby activity gym is also known as a baby activity mat. This helps explain exactly what it is.
Usually, a baby s activity gym is a mat lying flat on the floor. Your baby lies on his back and has a
variety of toys around him. or hanging over it or placing it around it. Some toys are removable while
others are not.
A baby activity gym is applied as a tool to stimulate your child s senses. All the time, helping to teach
your baby to turn around on his stomach. Therefore, the mat can also be used for upside down time.
How To Select The Best Baby Activity Gym
Before you buy a baby gym, there are specific factors to consider. Here we will tell you what to look
for when selecting an activity mat for your baby.

You re wrong. Be careful to read the box before you buy. Some activity gyms for babies are
technically pillows or wedges. This type of mats is used simply to hold your baby.
The goal of an activity gym is that your baby can develop sensory movement and abilities. If they are
positioned by a device and cannot move, this thwarts the real purpose.
Visually appealing
Babies are colorblind when they are born and can only see objects up close. However, baby mats are
ideal for babies to develop their skills until they learn to crawl. Once they crawl, you can put them on
the mat, and they will be off and roaming in a few minutes. Therefore, as your baby wears the play
mat, it must be visually appealing to your baby so it will attract your attention. This promotes
movement and aid in development.
All babies love mirrors. They like to look at themselves or think they see another baby.
Many activity gyms include lights that easily attract baby s attention. Make sure they don t have
dancing lights directly on top of them, or they won t look

Why I Hate Running
Although I hate running just as much as the next sane person, there is still a place that I can go that
makes me fall in love with running just as a toddler might with just about anything that shines or
squeaks: McAleer Road. To most people Mcaleer road is part of their daily routine to get them to and
from their job or to drop the children off at school; however, to me it is an escape. I can run the road
down and back in under a half hour in real time but to me it will feel like centuries. While running on
this specific road time seems to slow down; I have all the time in the world to clear my mind and think
deeper about events that have occurred in my life and in the world around me. Often times I find

As I neared the middle my legs began to feel as though someone just poured a hip high level of
cement and I had to try to run through it. After realizing the immense pain my legs were in, I soon
realized that my lungs were the next thing to go. Just imagine having your lungs shrivel up into the
size of a pea and that is only part of the pain my body betrayed me with. As I neared the halfway point
on the seventh tenths of a mile long hill, I felt relieved that I was finally able to run on a lower grade
once more. For those who have not experienced this feeling, just imagine the feeling you get when the
pizza deliveryman finally arrives at your house with your steaming hot and delicious pizza. Now
combine that feeling with the excitement of a small child running down the stairs on Christmas. The
child, having received all he ever imagined and more, is overcome with such emotion which causes
him to burst with laughter. This combination of feelings is nowhere near how ecstatic I was to end my
uphill journey. This excitement is short lived as I once more continue my trek up the agonizing hill.
Only three steps from the plateau, I felt like I should just give up. At this point, a two week old baby
would have a better chance of running up the rest of the hill than I did; however, I remembered a story
that I used to read as a child. There was no particular reason for this memory

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised By Gil Scott Heron
In the 1960s, the Civil rights movement faced many challenges, a lack of media was one of them. The
media managed to cover a lot of the events that happened during the movement. However, the media
coverage still failed to bring the right amount of attention to the issue at hand. T.V. shows and
advertisements did not change or show any support. Even though a change was taking place, the
messages were not being shown to the American public. With that being said, the black power
movement had a saying for this The Revolution Will Not Be Televised .
The Revolution Will Not be Televised was written by Gil Scott Heron in 1970. This was during the
time after the Civil right movement was big. Equality was still a struggle, but things were coming
along, as blacks were finally getting some notice in things. The Government treated black like they
did not exist and were very corrupt, which is why he wrote this poem. Born on April 1, 1949, Gil Scott
Heron was raised by his maternal grandmother, Lillie Scott, In Jackson Tennessee. He later moved to
New York, after his grandmother died, at the age of 12. He went to a high school in the Bronx and
attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, eventually settling down in Manhattan. He met Brian
Jackson during the time he was attending Lincoln University and later founded the Black Blues band.
There were about nine members in the group, but according to Scott Heron he was arguably not the
most important voice

The Honda Effect

and the second report was recorded by Richard Pascale, which looked at Honda s entry into the US
Market.
Honda is a Japan based company and is the world s largest manufacturer of motorcycles as well as the
world s manufacturer of internal combustion engines (motor vehicles) producing more than 14 million
internal combustion engines each year. Honda s trademark had been registered in Japan since

Deliberate strategies can be seen as the intended pattern or path, before it is realized, or before the
journey takes place and, the Emergent strategies are patterns that are realized despite or in absence of
the intended path or pattern. Emergent strategies are rather common in an organization, or more to the
point.
According to Pascale s report, Honda had two incidents where emergent strategies had to be
implemented; they were first not aware that the motorcycle business in the United States occurs during
a seasonable April August window and their timing coincided with the closing of the 1959 season,
therefore they had to come up with an alternative plan and that was to try go to retailers direct.
Again in Pascale s report Honda had another emergent strategy that had to be implement fast. When
their larger bikes started breaking and leaking oil causing clutch failure. Honda s reputation was
destroyed before it could be established. It turned out that motorcycles in the United States were
driven much farther than in Japan. As they were busy sending their machines back to their factory to
be fixed, they were running errands around Los Angeles in Honda 50cc motorcycles, which they had
initially decided not push because the market they were hoping to attract was macho, to they surprise,
the lightweight motorcycles attracted a lot of attention. So they

  • 2. Essay on Howard s End by E. M. Forster Howard s End by E. M. Forster Howards End by E. M. Forster deals with the conflict of class distinctions and human relationships. The quintessence of the main theme of this lovely novel is: Only connect!...Only connect the prose and passion...and human love will be seen at its height. Live in fragments no longer. This excerpt represents the main idea that Forster carries through the book: relationships, not social status, are or at least should be the most important thing for people.Howards End was written in 1910. That explains the naivete and idealism that permeate the atmosphere of the novel. Written in the beginning of the twentieth century in England about the beginning of the twentieth century in England it reflects the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even if the Schlegels belonged to the upper class, and breaking the society into parts were to benefit them in terms of some mercenary interests, they would still have a strong feeling of rejection of such a social structure. Relationships not social position are important for them. It seems that the philosophy of life of the Wilcox family English through and through should reflect the views of patriotic Forster. However, it s incorrect. The Schlegel sisters are the protagonists and the Wilcoxes are the antagonists of the novel not in the sense that they are the bad guys , but in that their philosophy of life is opposite of Schlegels and, therefore, the author s. Wilcoxes completely approve of the distinction between classes and are extremely pragmatic. Their snobbism and pragmatism don t leave any chance to the happy development of the engagement between Helen Schlegel and Paul Wilcox that ultimately contradicts the main principle that is emphasized throughout the book: Be comrades! The characters of the novel are believable as long as the author wants them to be believable. By that I mean that Forster, naturally, wants to create a plausible image of England of that time and therefore he must try to make the characters look plausible. He is successful in making the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes look natural enough, but in doing so he does not care about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Wk2Assgn Application Week 2 Daniel Johnson Walden University Children develop quickly at a young age. Young children under the age of six are capable of making thoughtful decisions about their behavior and environment (Epstein, 2003). They may even try to explain their behavior to others. In the case of Josh, a three year old boy that I will use for my observation and assessment project, social skills are still in the process of being developed and he hasn t begun to really start speaking at this point. After interviewing Josh s parents I was told that Josh says very few words and doesn t speak at all in sentences. Observation Plan Josh s parents are concerned that Josh is developing slower than his peers in the social development category because of his lack of communication verbally. I explained to his parents that I will observe his behavior over a few week period in a social setting in the late morning at the child care center in the gym while the mother is working out. She says that this will be the best place to observe his behavior in a social setting because there are several other children there that are the same age as Josh. The mother states that Josh is alert most of the time. He wakes easily and can go to sleep easily or stay awake late if the need arises. The parents want to know if he is developing socially at the same rate as his peers or if they should be watching closer for any signs of special needs. The other concern that the parents mentioned was regarding Josh being observed. They wanted to make sure that this would be done without Josh realizing that I was observing him. I assured the parents that he would not know that he was being observed. I will be looking to see how Josh engages and interacts with other children in the child care room at the gym. I will see if he tries to speak while he is playing with them and if he shows any type of aggression or retraction from being around others. • 6. Naturalistic Observation Of Student s A Coffee Line Naturalistic Observation of Student s in a Coffee Line In the United States, 85% of adults own a cell phone, with 18 to 24 year olds texting the most (Zickuhr, 2011). Of these adults, 67% reported that they check their phone even if they do not hear it ringing, 44% sleep with the phone beside their bed, and 29% reported they could not live without their cell phone (Smith, 2012). In addition, according to the Baylor University report, studies show that young adults check their phone an average of 60 times a day. This study examined cell phone use among university students that were alone and in a group. Specifically, we were interested in observing whether students alone in a coffee line or students in a group in a coffee line, spent more or less time on their cell phone. We were also interested to observe if gender affected cell phone usage and whether males or females were more likely to be in a group. The purpose of this study was to determine if university students that are alone spend more or less time on their phone than students that are in a group. We also examined if gender was an important factor on whether a student was in a group or alone. Using naturalistic observation, we calculated the amount of time individual students were on their phone per three minute time interval. The hypothesis was that students alone in a coffee line would spend the most time on their phone. We also predicted that women were more likely than men to be in a group. Method ... • 7. Food Protein Derived Bioactive Peptides ( Bps ) Abstract Food protein derived bioactive peptides (BPs) have been reported to trigger certain physiological responses in the body, thereby influencing health positively. These peptides have attracted high research and consumer interests due to their huge potential of use in functional foods and other dietary interventions of disease control and health promotion. However, successful product development is limited by the fact that current manufacturing processes are either difficult to scale up, high in cost, or have the potential to affect the structure activity properties of these peptides. To overcome these challenges, we have proposed in this review, the use of omic techniques and high throughput simulation models to forecast the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Introduction Over the years, it has become a known fact that health and nutrition are intricately linked. Not only do food nutrients supply the necessary biomolecules for various metabolic activities, but, in some cases, food nutrients are able to trigger certain desirable physiological responses in the body. Food proteins and hydrolysates thereof are amongst the most well studied bioactive molecules (Danquah and Agyei, 2012). Bioactive peptides have been defined as protein hydrolysates which, upon entry and absorption into the body, have the ability to induce certain desirable and physiologically measurable hormone like activities(Korhonen and Pihlanto, 2006). Some biological functions induced by these peptides include immunomodulatory, cytomodulatory, opiate, antihypertensive, antimicrobial, antithrombotic and metal chelation activities (Möller et al. , 2008). As natural products of food origin, bioactive peptides have a huge potential in health promoting functional foods and therapeutic products(Korhonen, 2009).However, this potential is not being realised as a result of certain bioprocess challenges. The lack of commercially viable processes for large scale ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Examples Of The First Circle Of Hell In Dante s Inferno In Dante s Inferno, Dante proposes an intriguing order for his nine circles of hell. Ignoring Limbo, Dante, intending to list the circles from the least grievous sin to the most grievous sin, orders the circles starting from lust, going to gluttony, greed, then wrath. Dante provides a thought provoking experience for the reader causing one to redefine his understanding of sin and God s judgement. After limbo, Dante presents the first circle of hell as the punishment for the lustful. While many, if given the choice, would not place lust as the least of all the sins, Dante does for good reason. In Appendix C, Aquinas expounds on Dante s argument that sins committed in passion are not as grave as premeditated sin. First, as sin consists chiefly in an act of the will, it follows that, other things being equal, a sin is all the more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While this punishment does not seem as severe as the other circles, it is symbolic of the greedy s fruitless pursuit of earthly riches. Dante places this in an even lower circle of hell because in regards to the sin of miserliness or squandering money, the abusers are even more aware of their sin. Furthermore, sin s underlying principle is even more visible here. According to Aquinas reasoning of sin in Dante s Inferno, pride is at the root of all sin. Whereas pride regards sin as turning away from God, to Whose commandment man refuses to be subject, for which reason it is called the beginning, because the beginning of evil consists in turning away from God (Aquinas, 385). Aquinas articulates that pride is the basis for all sin, because pride takes place when we refuse to be subject to the will of God, and the beginning of all sin is when we first turn away from God. Those who are greedy and miserly refuse to obey God s command of taking care of the poor and rather horde as much money as they can to no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The United States tried to resolve the issues with Japan over these differences, but a resolution could not be reached and war was inevitable (Borg). Why didn t the U.S. suspect Pearl Harbor of being the place of attack? Since the United States halted all exports to Japan, Japan declared war on the United States. Due to the lack of information, lack of technology, and talks of peace by Japan, the United States had no idea where Japan was going to hit. In January 1941, reports were received that Japan might attack Pearl Harbor but military officials ignored these reports. They considered attacks on the Philippines and other European countries to be more likely, underestimating Japan s ability to conceal preparations for such an operation. Due to the success of the cryptanalysis machine called, Magic, American leaders started breaking Japanese military operational codes. The codes that were deciphered showed Japan was likely to take some type of military action (Irive). At that time, Japan had only a 12 month supply of petroleum to fuel its economy and war operations left. So the U.S. anticipated Japan would act quickly! • 13. Comparing Sacrifices In The Magi And The Minor Canon Sacrifices can come in many different forms; whether it be an object, time, a way of living, or even a life. These sacrifices are usually made out of love. Della s sacrifice was giving up her appearance and the way people would think of her for her husband. The Minor Canon made his sacrifice of leaving a town for the townspeople he cared about. Both of these sacrifices were not for personal gain, but to improve the lives of those around them. Sacrifices are a prominent part of both The Gift of The Magi and The Griffin and The Minor Canon. In The Gift of The Magi, Della gave up her hair for her husband, which may seem like an odd sacrifice for an odd reason without further explanation. Della had beautiful hair, but not a lot of money, so she sold her hair for enough money to buy a gift for Jim, her husband. • 15. The Responsibilities Of Multinational Corporations ( Mncs ) One of the main objectives of any business organization includes making profits and enhancing the economic growth (Davis, 2012). Most businesses aim at discharging their economic and legal responsibilities. It is because for a business to continue as going concern, the business have to obey the law and be profitable. However, being ethically and philanthropically responsible can also affect the businesses apart from economic and legal factors. The responsibilities of multinational corporations (MNCs), instead of small or medium size corporations, will be the main focus of this paper. It is assumed that the MNCs currently have no difficulties in discharging their economic and legal responsibilities. Thus, the MNCs are in a better position to take a step further to discharge other responsibilities like ethical and philanthropic, while those small size businesses may still struggling in meeting the economic and legal responsibilities. As Heal (2004) suggests that MNCs are in a good position to minimize the difference between private and social cost. He argues that MNCs can distribute wealth from well developed countries to poor developed countries by paying reasonable wages to workers in poor countries. Also, MNCs have more resources than small businesses. So, MNCs can reduce or compensate for their environmental impacts without affecting their abilities to discharge their economic responsibilities. Cannibalism Is Not Illegal ( Eveleth ) The Other, Other, White Meat We had to eat these dead bodies, and that was it , this is what Andes plane crash survivor, Roberto Canessa, had to say on his experience with cannibalism. Cannibalism is the consumption of a member of the same species. Consuming human flesh is not against the law in the United States, therefore cannibalism is not illegal (Eveleth). In the eyes of the law, murdering someone to eat is wrong, but the act of eating a human is not. To Americans the simple thought of eating another human is sickening. To most that is true, but to others consuming human flesh is a way of life. Some cultures practice cannibalism for their own spiritual beliefs and others have to eat human flesh to survive. Human flesh has proteins most want when eating meat. The act of eating human meat has gotten a bad reputation over the years, looking back in history, people thousands of years ago have different views. Cannibalism is a way to survive, with the proteins necessary to do so, and a way for cultures to express their beliefs. Cannibalism is a taboo topic most people do not know enough about. People eat people for a variety of reasons, the most well known being killers getting a thrill from eating their victims. Although not everyone who is a cannibal gets a high from eating humans, Americans still see it as evil. Jeffrey Dahmer is the most well known example of this, a man who gets a sexual desire from killing and eating his victims. Everyone across America knew of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

So when the Roswell incident accured there was a massive rush down south to figure out exactly what happened and where this Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) came from. When this event got public the local townspeople got out that the entire thing was from another planet entirely. After the government stated that the material was from a weather balloon, some people thought it was a cover up for what it actually was. I d like to make three brief points on why I think the Roswell incident and this discovery of UFOs is fake. First off, I d like to say how people originally thought of the UFOs as Extra Terrestrial beings. Although I guess people looked over the fact that the material that the UFO contained a human made material. The people of Roswell turned this into a big story with a major assumption that the material came from space, but I don t think they have much evidence for that. With this I d like to say that I believe that the Roswell incident was fake and completely over exaggerated and how people thought it was cool to go out and pretend to see UFOs was kind of dumb. • 18. The Economic Effects Of The Housing Bubble Collapse Between 2004 and 2006, the Federal Reserve decided to increase the interest rate at which it would lend money to banks. The effects of this led to higher interest rates passed on to consumers by the banks. Though this is only part of the issue, it contributed to the housing bubble collapse. The economic effects of what occurred were not fully realized until August of 2008.When the housing market crashed; it had tremendously adverse effects on the US as well as the World economy (Bajaj). Why did raising interest so slightly affect so many people? The simple answer is that a lot of people were living beyond their means. Banks and subprime lenders were lending money to people who realistically could not pay the loans back. President Calvin Coolidge said, There is no dignity quite so impressive, and no one independence quite so important, as living within your means . First, we must address what it looks like to live within our means. A study conducted by CNN reported that 76 percent of Americans live paycheck to paycheck (Johnson). On top of that, many do not have sufficient savings to cover six months of expenses. According to Johnson s survey, people do not have enough to save after all of their expenses. Throughout history, fear has lead to some of the most violent actions by man, and some of the biggest collapses of organized society. In early American history, the people of Salem experienced this for themselves. Arthur Miller shows this in his book. The society of Salem that Miller creates in The Crucible shows how fear can slowly cause rational thought to deteriorate, leading to mass hysteria and eventually the breakdown of civilized behavior. During Act I, Miller shows how each Salem s citizens begin to realize this fear they have, and how it is slowly starting to take over their minds. This new idea that witchcraft exists in their ... Once the people of Salem fully realize their fear, Miller shows how they try to justify this fear, but that they are in fact becoming more and more hysterical. They now try to find a justification for thoughts and their fear of evil. They need some solid proof to back up these accusations that they make, and they need to clear their own names as well. So, they arbitrarily start claiming that [they] saw...with the Devil , and that [they] saw...with the Devil (45). These unjustified explanations for their fears just shows how truly corrupted their minds become. They start naming their own friends, neighbors, and even their own family in order to clear themselves and more importantly to try to prove that this witchery is really upon them, and to prove that they are not just crazy. What it really does is show how hysteria is setting in, and how they have actually accepted these lies as the truth. While questioning each other on the matter, their breakdown can really be seen through their quick, almost sputtering manner of speaking: Hale: Did you call the Devil last night? Abigail: I never called him! Parris: She called the Devil? Abigail: I didn t see no Devil! Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas In the classic film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas , two eccentric characters, journalist Raoul Duke and his psychotic attorney Dr. Gonzo travel to Las Vegas on a job and in search of the American dream. Throughout the trip they find themselves in odd situations that one would not normally encounter. Duke and Gonzo s predicaments could be explained be a wide variety of psychological issues. One psychological concept that is a very large part of Duke and Gonzo s trip is their excessive drug use. The movie begins with Duke narrating and driving a fire apple red convertible that they rented, in the desert around Bartslow, California. It was then, he stated, the drugs began to take hold. In the first five minutes of the movie Duke opens the trunk of the car, while swatting at bats that weren t there and does an inventory of the drugs packed in a suit case. Americans felt a connection to Great Britain, in particular, because of cultural similarities. When the Germans sunk the Lusitania, a British cruise ship, in 1915, 128 Americans were among those who lost their lives, causing America to become even angrier towards the Germans. At the same time, the British intercepted a message from Germany to Mexico called the Zimmerman Note, asking the government of Mexico to declare war on the U.S. if war broke out between the U. S. and Germany. The note also promised to help Mexico regain the territory of Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico if Mexico declared war on the United States. A critical part of socialization comes from George Herbet Mead s Role Taking and Stages of the Self theory (Kendall 95 96). The first step is the preparatory stage where children learn to imitate the people around them, usually parents and other family members. The second stage is the play stage where children start to develop language skills and take the role of another person that they look up to. The final stage is the game stage, where children begin to understand who they are, and who other people are as well. In this stage, children learn to play sports and participate in other activities that require them to have an idea of what society expects of them (Kendall 95 96). If a child is denied the ability to go through these stages, they do not receive the proper socialization that they will need to survive in the world. Socialization among children is very important. A child must learn how to walk, talk, eat, use the restroom, read, write, and do many other important skills. He pulls from Philippians 3:1 11, where Paul challenges us to lose our religion; and choose a relationship. Paul uses two directives that lead to a right relationship with Christ. Raymond Carr first comments on how Paul emphasizes the theme of joy. Carr tells us that Paul repeats this a couple of times. Paul emphasizes that, whatever your circumstance, you should always rejoice in God s attributes and His provisions. Paul continues by saying: To write the same things again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you. Paul s frequent saying to rejoice during affliction, because if he continues to tell us this we can work to rejoice and not forget it, or even cynical. Paul wants for the believer to stand strong in their time of need, to be steady and secure in their faith as well. Carr hints at that the simple reason for repetition is that: Words sink in over time. Truths need to be emphasized, impact, and retention. Carr then goes to 3:2 6, where Paul explores the danger of religion and religious people. He warns about the Judaizers, by saying, Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the false circumcision. Paul is warning the church to look over your shoulder because people in the church aren t really what they say they are. Paul calls the Judaizers dogs. Dogs were not the cute ... At first, Sen s argument seems appealing because we are all able to keep the fruits of our labor, and decide what kind of life we want to live. This fits in line with man s natural tendencies toward selfishness, and it seems that it would be difficult to develop one s capabilities simply for the case of the commonwealth, and not for oneself. As naturally self interested beings, we would always want to develop all of our capabilities so that we may live the lives we have reason to desire. However, only using our freedom for self interested motives leads to numerous issues. For example, one of the most important aspects of a democracy is exercising one s right to vote; however, if one is only concerned with oneself, they will vote in a way that only them, and perhaps other members of one s social class, will benefit the most. Thus, people could end up voting for a leader who plans to make them, and others like them, wealthier by keeping wealth within a small percentage of the population. Not only does this hinder development as Sen sees it, but it also has many negative implications for a society; for example, it may lead to higher levels of poverty, crime, unrest, dissatisfaction, and eventually lead to civil tension (all of which are unfreedoms). Thesis Statement On Standardised Testing Standardised Testing Thesis Standardised testing is something every high school student has to go through as it is a crucial and stressful part of the college application process. During their junior year, high school student s stress levels increase as they have to take both the SATs/ACTs and AP tests. The SAT was introduced in 1926 and since then it has slowly become more integrated into the standard procedure in order to get into a university. The AP is an understandable test as it tests students on what they studies in class; the SAT on the other hand requires students to do all the learning and studying on their own time. The University of New Hampshire stopped accepting standardised test scores altogether; the president of the university commented that after doing so the quantity of applications went down, but the quality went up as they found that the applicants collectively were more mature and motivated mainly because the application process became harder with the increased focus on essay submission. There has been an SAT optional movement in which many liberal arts colleges in the US decided not to require SAT or ACT scores as they thought it had outlived its usefulness. The former president of Sarah Lawrence College stated that We are a writing intensive school, and the information produced by SAT scores added little to our ability to predict how a student would do at our college; it did, however, do much to bias admission in favor of those who could afford expensive coaching ... • 45. The Effect Of Inverse Square Law On A Beam Of X Ray Photons Experiment 1 Introduction: The aim of this experiment is to investigate the effect of the inverse square law on a beam of x ray photons. The inverse square law states that the intensity of an x ray beam is inversely proportional to the square of the distance (Ball, J.L., Moore, A.D. and Turner, S., 2008). Similar triangles (Appendix A Image 1) are a proof of the inverse square law as it shows that if the distance from the beam is doubled, the intensity falls to one quarter of its original value. If it is trebled the intensity falls to one ninth and at four times the distance it is one sixteenth its value, etc (Holmes, K., Elkington, M. and Harris P., 2013). The formula used to calculate this is: This law only applies if the radiation is from a point source, the radiation of the beam is homogenous (the photons must all have the same energy) and if there is no attenuation between the source of radiation and the detector (Holmes, K., Elkington, M. and Harris P., 2013). However, the x ray beam cannot satisfy these three conditions of the inverse square law. This is because the x rays produced are not emitted from a true point source as the focal spot has a finite size. They are not emitted equally in all directions as the anode heel effect causes the intensity to vary across the beam and the absorption and scattering of the x ray beam occur as it passes through the air (Graham, D., Cloke, P. and Vosper, M., 2012). Despite this, the inverse square law can still be applied ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
