Optomatologist Personal Statement
During my high school career, I became fascinated with the workings and functions of our eyes while
attending an internship at an ophthalmologist s office. Through my time there I was fortunate to be
able to shadow and assist both the ophthalmologists and optometrists. While taking corneal
topographies of patients eyes before they were examined, my interest continued to grow and that
interest blossomed into a desire to pursue this as a career when I had the opportunity to witness my
first eye surgery. Though the pterygiectomy was a simple procedure, I was inspired by the fact that it
could allow the patient to see better, changing their life.
Predictably, this interest led me to work at an optometrist s office, and during the years I have ... Show

I started to attend many nutrition classes, gaining valuable knowledge about the correlations between
diet and nutrition and various nutrition related eye conditions. To gain more hands on experience in
this area, I began working at the USDA. Through one of the many research projects I worked on, I
was able to determine that children are increasingly more prone to adult diseases affecting general
optical health at an earlier age. Research indicates that this is largely due to the overall increase in
both sodium and sugar intake, in children, and that nutrition is extremely important in overall eye
health.
Through all of these experiences, the most important thing I have learned is that there is so much more
to learn. With continued research the science is constantly growing, with more information uncovered
all the time. For instance, I recently attended a presentation by an ophthalmologist, Dr. Rosenfarb,
about eye disease and acupuncture. I learned how the eyes related to the qi and all of the organs in our
bodies. Though the science is still being researched, the implications of oriental medicine and
naturopathy on the fields of optometry and ophthalmology have become of particular interest to

Poem And Similes And Annotation In Ode To Books
Ode to Books Annotation:
I used similes and metaphors such as open the cover like a curtain rising and darkness of night
slaughtering the night of day in order to make the poem more vivid and to completely express how
much I enjoy books and how much of an escape they are for me. I also repeated the word Books with
a capitalized B in order to emphasize the word and the idea that follows. My use of free verse allows
the poem to be read with a specific tone and rhythm.
This poem relates to my coming of age because I ve always been an avid reader. From when I was
little going through picture books, to elementary school starting to read simple chapter books, and on
to middle and high school where I can read more advanced books. Books ... Show more content on

I think that pushing myself to use similes and metaphors in Flightless and One Hundred taught me to
be more creative with my word choice. I also tend to unintentionally repeat the same verbs in creative
writing, so using vivid verbs in War Cries and A Matter of Preference led me to come up with moe
verbs to use in my writing. I also believe that writing poetry has allowed me to better connect
emotionally with my writing. All in all, I think that writing poetry has made me a better writer in many
ways, but I guess we ll see if that s true when I get my next essay grade. You may not care, but I ll tell

Alexander The Great Of The Greatest Military Geniuses
Alexander the Great
I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion
Alexander III of Macedon,
Born into a rich family, Alexander III of Macedon (Greek: Αλέξανδρος Γ ο Μακεδών) or more
commonly known as Alexander the Great ( Greek: Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ Μέγας) was destined to be a king.
Alexander the Great was also considered one of the greatest military geniuses in history. He was the
inspiration for many great leaders and warriors in later generations of many different cultures.
Hannibal Barca once ranked Alexander as the greatest general in all of the world . Gnaeus Pompeius
Magnus, Napoléon Bonaparte, and Julius Caesar are just several of the many that were inspired. Even
Julius Caesar once cried and wept when he saw a statue of Alexander because he had never achieved
as much as Alexander at the same age.
Alexander III of Macedon was born on July 356 BC in Pella Greece into the Argead Dynasty. Even
before he was born, several people predicted that he would be very successful and would be invincible
when he grew to be a young adult. Below is a translation from Plutarch s original book about
Alexander that was written in 75 A.C.E.:
It is agreed on by all hands, that on the father s side, Alexander descended from Hercules by Caranus,
and from Aeacus by Neoptolemus on the mother s side. His father Philip, being in Samothrace, when
he was quite young, fell in love there with Olympias, in company with whom he was

Colonization And Colonization Of Indonesia
In Junior high, the history teacher taught us that my native country, Indonesia was colonized by the
Dutch for 350 years. The Netherlands is one of the European countries that established its country
over Indonesia to take benefits of our rich land such as spices. I was aware our land is very source full
of spices, rice, sugar, coffee. The Dutch colonized us with the focus of monopoly through trading.
Because of the most important source of the spices of this rich land of Indonesia, the Netherlands
profits from our land with tremendous wealth.
In colonialism era, the United State of America and the Great Britain maintain a good report to respect
their laws. Both countries are willing to allow their colonies to become independent. On the other
hands, European country such as the Netherlands, Spain, and France are very restricted to their
colonies, for examples, they limited education to certain social groups. Also, Southeast Asia is not
encouraged to engage in economic activities. This causes many corruptions that huge problems in
these European countries. This colonial authority did not support the rule of law to its own country, it
is only to Asian, which is Indonesian. They only control on our people but not their people. Moreover,
they control our politic, economic, and cultural.
This colonial authority, the Dutch did not provide civil liberties to our Indonesian. There is no fair
trial; freedom of assembly; free speech; free press when they colonized us. Only to

The Fall and Rise of Euro Disney
The Fall and Rise of Euro Disney Introduction: Euro Disney is well known as one of the greatest
failures in corporate history. Indeed, its initial lack of success was so great that, in an effort to distance
themselves from the tainted name, Disney now identifies the site as Disneyland Paris. The discussion
here lends some insight into a few of the reasons for Euro Disney s disastrous early performance.
History: The French cite for Euro Disney was established in 1985, however the process of determining
the theme park s location would be a long one. The process which began in the early 1970s, when the
Disney Corporation first seriously entertained the notion of entering the European theme park market
would, by 1984, reach a point of serious realization. At this juncture, its key decision makers were
considering as many as 1200 different locations throughout the continent, with a determined vision to
replicate the model successfully exercised in the United States, where an ideal plot of land would be
acquired and converted into its own town. (DLP, 1) This class of candidates would be whittled down
quickly according to a very large number of criteria, which would include vacation patterns of
Europeans, topography, infrastructure, climate, available land, local economy, labour market and
existing touristic attractions. (DLP, 1) Growth: From the start, Euro Disney s attendance numbers
would be dramatically disappointing, producing a considerable shortfall in early growth

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof Analysis
Horribly unbearable. The majority of people have been in a situation that could be described as just
that; unbearable. Most would give up; they would find a way out of the situation they despise so
dearly. Then there are those that know their situation is unbearable, but genuinely fear what their life
would be like without the situations they have become so used to. These people are afraid to jump into
the unknown, just like a cat would be on a hot tin roof. In Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee
Williams, there are two characters who would be classified as cats, who decide to stick it out on the
roof. Brick Pollitt and Big Mama Pollitt are both burdened with the marriages they occupy. However,
both of them make the decision to fight the heat, and resist the jump off of their roof; this place they
know as their own comfort zone. Disgusted by a secret he has kept for far too long, Brick drinks away
his horrid past. When he gets just the right amount of alcohol in his system, a click sounds in his head,
and a peace flows over his being. This click also triggers a tolerance of his bothersome wife, Maggie,
and a way of accepting every mistake made in the past. Brick fears the unknown, or perhaps any
situation involving the truth about his feelings for his late best friend, Skipper, Big Daddy: I m

Comparison Of The Book And The Great Gatsby
In The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby, Myrtle, and George all suffer from the same fate
of death while attempting to pursue a better life for themselves. All of these characters originate from
humble beginnings and work on improving their societal positions. The same story is successfully
adapted into the 1974 film, of the same name, directed by Jack Clayton and starring Robert Redford as
Jay Gatsby. While preserving the integrity of the story, the film also accurately captures, both in
content and in form, the theme of Fitzgerald s story that by attempting to improve one s social class in
American society, one effectively starts the path towards his own downfall. By comparing and
contrasting the settings, the use of symbols, and the characters in the two versions of The Great
Gatsby, the shared theme will be proven. A similarity between the two versions is the setting in which
the tale of greed and the pursue of materialistic desires takes place. The film and the book both take
place primarily in New York. The story occurs across the span of the summer of 1922 in the West and
East Eggs of the Long Island sound. Summer is represented in film with shots of the sun, harshly
illuminating both the actors and the scenery. Additionally, in almost every close up shot, beads of
sweat are seen glistening on the actors foreheads. The outdoor shots of both Gatsby s and Nick s house
include vast patches of short fresh grass that is indicative of the summer. Similarly,

HMGB1 And Alzheimer s Disease Analysis
HMGB1 is a prototypic damage associated molecular pattern (DAMP) protein highly secreted by
activated macrophages and monocytes as a cytokine mediator of inflammation. This DNA binding
nuclear protein is released both passively during cell death and actively following cytokine
stimulation. It is also implicated in both infectious and sterile inflammatory disorders [32 36] affecting
the central nervous system (CNS) such as in Parkinson s disease (PD) [37], multiple sclerosis (MS)
[38,39], ischemic stroke [40], traumatic brain injury (TBI) [41] and Alzheimer s disease AD [42 44].
HMGB1 activates cells by differential engagement of several membrane receptors including advanced
glycation end products (RAGE), toll like receptor 2 (TLR2), and TLR4 which are primarily
responsible for HMGB1 pro inflammatory activity and BBB impairment [45,46]. Specific to the
proposed work, several studies have clearly outlined the role of OS in the development of
microvascular and cardiovascular complications of 2DM [47].

Edgar Allan Poe s Leathery
Streaks of shimmering sunlight filtered through a golden canopy of trees, casting elegant shadows to
dance across the mossy verdure. The lush grass was invested with thriving insects that swarmed on the
ground like an overcrowded marketplace. The crickets made a harmonious song that echoed
throughout the forest, almost in sync with the repetitive calls of exotic animals that were crawling
through shrubbery and soaring high in the leafy giants. Leathery leaves brushed against each other in
the feeble breeze, almost as if they were whispering in hushed tones whilst squirrels ran and frolicked
in the bushes.
A balmy smell lingered in the humid air, mixing with the scent of damp earth. Flowers were dotted
across the luscious forest floor; their enticing fragrance leaving an odd taste in their wake. Vines
twisted up the trees, reaching magnificent heights though some hung down like curtains, hiding parts
of the forest away in darkness. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Sparta DBQ Essay
Any society that abuses children should crumble .Sparta was an ancient Greek city state. They valued
military strength above anything else. They did not teach academics, farming, or anything else besides
military tactics. The weakness outweighed strengths because they lacked education , they abused their
children and their society did not last more than 300 years.
To begin with, The Spartans lacked education. In document D the text states, [The Spartans] learned to
read and write for purely practical reasons: but all other forms of education they banned from the
country, Spartans were not allowed to read books or treatises. They could not perform in plays or
criticize the government. They could not form their own opinion.
Secondly, they only lasted for a little over 300 years. In the Background Essay it says, During these
years, Sparta was under terrific pressure, fighting Athens and the same time looking over its shoulder
at a restless helot population at home. These two factors led to the Spartans down ... Show more

La Virgen s Role In Aztec-Mexican Culture
In addition to the symbol of the snake, La Virgen, plays an important role in Chicana culture as well.
Anzaldúa goes deeper into this rich cultural history, and informs us that in Aztec Mexican society,
women were able to possess property and were often viewed as mystic beings, having occupations
such as curers or priestesses (Anzaldúa 32). Rather than Jesus or God the Father, la Virgen de
Guadalupe became the largest symbol in Mexican religion and culture to this day. In fact, Chicana
culture does not identify with the Spanish Father, but the Indian Mother. The connection between the
symbology of the snake and La Virgen is solidified as Anzaldúa explains the importance of feminine
deities, such as the goddess, Coatlicue, or she who wears a serpent skirt (27). Coatlicue is both a life
giver and death bringer, emphasizing contrast. This relates to Anzaldúa s discussion on the Coatlicue

Anzaldúa uses the Coatlicue state as an empowering method to overcome internal conflict. She writes

Macular Degeneration Essay
Age related Macular Degeneration or AMD is a disease that affects millions of Americans every year.
There are several factors that contribute to this disease, those being: exposure to bright light, diet,
hereditary factors and gender. The main ones that can be controlled consist of exposure to bright light
and diet. Those that cannot be controlled are hereditary factors and gender. Prevention of macular
degeneration consists of reducing the eyes exposure to bright light and the daily diet of the person at
risk. What I seek to explore is if adopting to the Mediterranean diet will create the needed health

Essay on Explaination of Thermodynamics
A Layman s Explanation of Two Laws of Thermodynamics
Energy is encountered in many forms, such as mechanical, chemical (food and fuel), electrical,
nuclear, heat, and radiant (light). Energy has the ability to bring about change or to do work.
Thermodynamics is the study of energy. The field of thermodynamics studies the behavior of energy
flow in natural systems. These studies have rendered two laws of thermodynamics.
The first law of thermodynamics is also known as the law of conservation of energy. This law suggests
that energy can be transferred from one system to another in many forms. Also, it cannot be created or
destroyed, (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2012).
Ultimately, the total amount of energy available is a constant. Einstein s ... Show more content on

The laws of thermodynamics and how they are regarded in terms of energy are as such: the first law
pretty much indicates that you can t get something for nothing and the second law pretty much
indicates that you cannot break even; energy will be lesser than it was before the transfer. The first law
governs the quality of energy available from an energy conversion process, whereas the second law
governs the quality of the energy available. According to the first law, we will never run out of energy,
but according to the second law, we can run out of high quality (useful) energy. The second law also
tells us that high quality energy can never be used again. In terms easily understood, not only can we
not get something for nothing (the first law), but we cannot ever break even in terms of energy quality
(the second law). In this we can realize that we can recycle matter, but we can never recycle high
quality energy.

Sullivan s Influence On American Architecture
At the turn of the century, new trends in painting and in architecture emerged to replace the traditional
forms of these arts, and introduce new and innovative ideas to the art and architecture of the new
century. Artists such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque introduced the cubism and collages, and
defied the need for art to be literal and straightforward as much art was before the twentieth century.
Architecture was transfigured by architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, who
rejected traditional architectural methods and employed new ideals. Their ideals included using new
materials such as ferroconcrete, using Asian architecture as a significant influence, and drastically
changing how homes are constructed inside and out ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Le Corbusier (1887 1965) was a French architect based in Europe whose real name was Charles
Edouard Jeanneret. Likewise to Wright, Le Corbusier believed in functional housing and often
compared a house to a machine (Frampton.) Ironically, he opposed and rejected Wright s architectural
ideals (Frampton). His architecture was quite known in Europe for its progressive and sleek style.
When it came down to deciding on how he would design his works, he followed his system called,
purism . Purism involved the consideration of two things: practical need and the search of archetypes.
According to Frampton, he wanted only what was practical and necessary to be considered in the
designs, and looked for intellectually stimulating and functional shapes. He believed in the constant
improvement and innovation of architecture; he did not agree with typical, traditional European style.
He based his architecture on an utopia and created all his designs to resemble a modern, city like
utopia that was ideal for automobiles. According to Frampton, he said, A city made for speed is a city
made for success . He called his ideal, utopian city, Ville Contemporaine and when he displayed his
utopian project in the Paris Exposition des Arts Decoratifs LOOK FOR YEAR OF THIS

Why Was The Bolshevik Revolution Successful
There are numerous reasons why the Bolshevik revolution was successful, the most important reason
to why the revolution of October 1917 was successful was due to the role of Lenin, this is not to say
however that he was the only cause, this essay will explain why the Bolshevik takeover succeeded.
A predominant factor in the Bolshevik takeover s victory was the weakness and poor decisions of the
provisional government (PG), the provisional government was weak due to numerous defeats in the
war and the fact that they did not change how the country was run after the February Revolution
which removed the Tsar from power, this meant that the Provisional Government was merely seen as

This is firstly because he was the one to decide that the Bolsheviks would try to stop the war, which
was their most popular policy, especially after the brutal failure of the June Offensive. If it was not for
this then the Bolsheviks would have not had the support of as many soldiers or workers. The second
reason why Lenin was the most important cause was due to the fact that he turned the Bolsheviks into
a brand with him as a figurehead and with simple, easy to understand slogans such as Peace, Land and
Bread appealed to the masses as they could easily identify what the Bolsheviks supported and why it
appealed to them which in turn gained their support. Lenin also created the Red Guard which was very
important to the victory as they were the well trained army that fought for the Bolsheviks and it was
only with them that they could overcome the PG. Lenin is also important as he was the person who
convinced the Bolshevik central committee (controlled by Trotsky) to vote for a revolution , if it was
not for this there would have been no Bolshevik revolution in October 1917. Therefore Lenin is more
important because he created the resources and gathered the support needed to overthrow the PG by
exploiting the PG s weakness , like keeping the war, and Lenin is more important than Trotsky
because without the resources and support which Lenin had gained, he would have not been able to
pull of his master

For 40 year experimentation, a high price had been paid for this knowledge. Men had died; wives and
their children had been infected because of the science and research (CDC, 2008). Little imagination
is needed to ascribe racial attitudes toward the white government officials who took part in running
this experiment but what about all the African Americans who took part with them. The experiments

The affiliated hospital gave the PHS its medical facility to use during these studies that was a
predominately black facility. Most of the individuals that were working on the experiment were black

Kyoto Protocol And The Protocol
As a basic description the Kyoto Protocol is a document, which legally binds all member countries
that are classified as developed to meet specific emission reduction targets. The protocol brings with it
several Commitment periods , which as the name suggests are periods of time by which member states
are bound to the protocol. The initial commitment period began in 2008 and ceased in 2012. The next
began in 2013 and will end in 2020. Currently there are 192 member states to the protocol. It has been
determined that developed countries are primarily responsible for the current elevated levels of
Greenhouse gases (GHG). The Kyoto Protocol puts heavier goals on the developed countries based on
the idea of differentiated but common responsibilities. The Protocol dictates that there are six primary
Greenhouse gases identified as contributing the most harm to the natural environment, these being:
Methane, Carbon Dioxide, Nitrous Oxide, Hydro fluorocarbons, Per fluorocarbons and Sulfur
Hexafluoride (U.S. EPA, N.D.)
Each nation has their own individual targets. The average target was a cut of roughly 5%, in
comparison to the levels in the atmosphere in 1990 and 2012 (The Guardian, 2012). Some countries
have a different approach to the protocol than others. An example of this is the United States, which is
yet to ratify the protocol and also happens to be the second largest total emitter (second to China) and
largest emitter per capita of greenhouse gases in the world (M.

SOM Teacher Observation
After completing the SOLOM teacher observation assignment I received great information about
where my student stands and what areas he has room for improvements so that I can better his
learning. My student has great comprehension skills. This is definitely his strongest skill out of the
other four. He understood all directions given to him. He did have trouble understanding one word on
his quiz so he asked his teachers for help. Under comprehension, I would give him a 4. He was able to
understand what the teacher was saying and had no trouble on neither his quiz or test. If he was able to
comprehend his quiz fully I would have given him a 5.
One area where my student struggle was fluency. During the class, he asked a question and he had
trouble making a complete sentence. I gave my student a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He only missed 4 out of 10 questions on his vocabulary test. I would rate his vocabulary skills at a 3.
The only reason why I gave my student a 3 and not a 4 is because he still struggled to understand
some of the vocabularies that was on the quiz and struggled using the right words in his conversations.
His pronunciation is definitely one of the biggest areas for improvements. I would rate my student at a
2 under pronunciation because at times it is very hard to understand him. There are certain sounds that
he picks up right away and knows how to use it in a sentence. He is still able to say what is on his
mind and you are still able to understand what he is saying; it is just difficult at times to understand
him.
Grammar is another area where my student did well at. After looking over his journal writing for the
day there were very few little mistakes. The teacher said that she is amazed at how well he can write
for how long he has been in school in the US. I would rate his grammar score at 4. There were still
some errors in his writing but overall did really

The Nervous System And Peripheral Nervous Systems
The nervous system has three general functions: a sensory function, an interpretative function and a
motor function. Sensory nerves gather information from inside the body and the outside environment.
The nerves then carry the information to central nervous system (CNS). Nervous tissue consists of two
main types of cells: neurons and neuroglia. Neurons also so known as nerve cells ) transmit nerve
impulses that move information around the body. Central Nervous System and Peripheral Nervous
System are Identified as the two major groups of nervous system organs while CNS = brain spinal
cord and PNS nerves that extend from the brain (cranial nerves) and spinal cord (spinal nerves).
Sensory receptors respond to stimuli and transmit data about them to the brain. In the skin, receptors
detect touch, pressure, vibration, temperature, and pain. Elsewhere in the body, more specialized
receptors detect light (see How the eye works), sound (see The mechanism of hearing), smell, and
taste. The body nervous system detects the changes affecting the body, make decisions, and stimulate
muscles or glands to respond. The responses counteract the effects of the changes, where the nervous
system helps maintain homeostasis. Neurons vary in size and shape and also differ in the lengths and
sizes because of their axons and dendrites. A neuron has 4 basic parts: the dendrites, the cell body
which is also called the soma, the axon and the axon terminal. Dendrites Extensions from the neuron

As I enter the museum, I saw huge white walls, which made up the whole museum. I thought it was

Chicana/o art has been in this country for years but yet no recognitions of the art pieces in the

The impression that the museum is leaving is that there is no room for Chicana/o art and no need to
explore the cultures that they have to offer. This is sort of a reason why I didn t feel as comfortable
because there wasn t any work that I could relate to or feel excited to see. Whereas the art exhibition

The Banking Sector Is The Pillar Supporting The Modern...
In today s financial world, the banking sector is the pillar supporting the modern world s commerce,

Schizophreni A Major Psychiatric Disorder
Schizophrenia is a major psychiatric disorder that can be crippiling, and is one of top 10 disabilites in
the world (Bhargav, Nagendra, Gangadhar, and Nagarathna, 2014). Schizophrenia usually effects
males in the early 20 s and women in their late 20 s. Symptoms include: delusions, hallucinations,
disorganized thinking (speech), and abnormal motor behavior (mayo clinic). Even with proper
treatment patients still experience symptoms related to their disorder. Proper medication can help with
symptoms, but sometimes this comes with cost of side effects that make a patient not even want to
take the medicine. There is also the cost of paying for a doctor, which can be quite expensive. The
initial consultation can cost up to three hundred dollars with each subsequent visit costing 100 dollars.
There is also the stigma that goes along with Schizophrenia. I m sure everyone has seen the man or
woman walking down the street talking to someone that isn t there, this person could appear quite
normal with help. Schizophrenics are ordinary people that have a disorder, and with proper treatment
can function in society. As mentioned earlier even with proper treatment individuals with

are seeking add on treatments, including myself being diagnosed with Schizophrenia at the age of 21.

In the 1893 edition of the Locomotive Firemen s Magazine, William Graham Sumner published a
piece on social Darwinism called the Fruits of Evolution . In this article William Sumner applies
Darwin s law of evolution to labor. He believes that because of the processes of evolution human
intellect has become more robust and should be cultivated within the classroom. He argues that those
who command the largest educational advantages control those of inferior opportunities . By

Psychology Paper on My Mother´s Student
Not everyone has the luxury of good health and a good home life. When someone has either bad
health, or a bad home life, there is plenty of pity to be felt; but when those two factors are combined, it
paints a whole new picture. It is important to do everything in one s power to help them through the
tough time and make it as painless as possible. That is exactly what I did in the case of one of my
mother s students. She was having back surgery due to severe scoliosis, while also dealing with a
mother who was addicted to pain medication. This girl was very worried that after the surgery was
over and she was sent home, she would not be able to take her medication, fearing that her mother
would take it for herself. When I heard that this student had asked my mother to accompany her for
her procedure in Kansas City, I saw this as a golden opportunity. I could finally find out who this girl
was that my mother was so caught up with, staying up at night worrying about. I could finally
understand who I was sharing my mother with, and why. When I walked into the hospital room after
her procedure, my mother s student was on a myriad of powerful painkillers, much to her dismay. This
girl was terrified of taking the medication, because she did not want to end up like her mother. The girl
s mother also had Scoliosis, and had developed a dependency for her pain medication, leading up to
her developing a tolerance for it and taking her daughter s pills as well. My mother s

Obstructive Sleep Apnea, A Very Highly Widespread And...
Obstructive Sleep Apnea, OSA, is a very highly widespread and underdiagnosed disease (Kerner
Roose, 2016). The ailment can affect the person and the people around the affected individual
immensely. When one takes the time to diagnose a case of OSA it can be helped and treated. Many
different factors should be taken into account when dealing with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, including
the psychological perspective it falls under, the research methods used to investigate it, the positive
and negative components of the condition, and the controversies associated with it.
Psychological Perspective Psychology is an immense, widely varied, and diverse field of study. Over
the years, the field of psychology has grown, and so have the vast topics the field examines and
studies. A few major perspectives of psychology are psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, and
biological (Cherry, 2016). Of these areas, OSA can fit under the biological perspective. Obstructive
Sleep Apnea suitably relates to this category since it is largely a result of our biological, or physical,
makeup.
The biological perspective includes genetics and their effects on an individual and also the brain. This
perspective stresses the physical and biological foundations of behavior (Cherry, 2016). Studies have
shown that genetic factors cause the underlying susceptibility to OSA (Kant, Gupta, Natu, Chand,
Singh, 2010). OSA has also been linked to depression. The disease is one of many independent risk

Iron Vs Non Haem Iron Essay
Iron is a vital mineral that is needed for many roles within the body. This includes the transport of
oxygen in the blood with haemoglobin, myoglobin which is iron containing and helps store oxygen in
muscles cells and support of the immune system (Arens, 1996).
Composition of Iron There are 2 different forms of iron, haem and non haem. Haem iron is the most
easily absorbed of the two, and is the more desirable as its absorption is not impacted by other
nutrients eaten in the diet ( Iron | Nutrient Reference Values, 2014). Although it makes up only about
six percent of iron in the diet, it equals roughly a third of the iron absorbed ( Iron | Nutrient Reference

It can be life threatening, especially to children ( Iron poisoning , 2017). Moderate toxicity of iron is
considered as 20mg/kg to 60mg/kg ( Iron poisoning , 2017). Anything more than 60mg/kg can cause
severe toxicity, and may lead to severe morbidity and mortality ( Iron poisoning , 2017). There are 5
different stages of iron toxicity, however, not every individual will go through every stage. During the
first 6 hours, the first stage, mainly gastrointestinal symptoms will arise ( Iron poisoning , 2017). This
includes abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, hematemesis (vomiting of blood) and hematochezia
(blood in faeces) ( Iron poisoning , 2017). The second stage, between 6 to 24 hours, often appears to
be a recovery stage, when in fact the toxic amount of iron consumed is absorbed (Yuen Gossman,
2017). Recurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms, shock and metabolic acidosis, iron induced
coagulopathy, hepatic dysfunction cardiomyopathy and renal failure are the symptoms that occur
during the next 6 72 hours, the third stage (Yuen Gossman, 2017). The fourth stage occurs over the
next 2 to 5 days and involves the increasing of aminotransferase levels and the possible further
development to hepatic failure ( Iron poisoning , 2017). The fifth and final stage lasts 4 6 weeks and
includes pyloric or proximal bowel scarring and obstruction due to the gastrointestinal mucosa healing

Comparison Of The Dictatorship Of Big Brother And The...
The dictatorship of Big Brother and the American government, both use similar ways to monitor their
citizens, but they have different reasons for it. Big Brother wants to closely monitor his citizens so
they are obedient by fear and the American government watches their citizens to protect them and
their rights. They do this through televisions, spies and surveillance cameras. In the beginning of the
novel 1984, the reader is introduced to how the government under the dictatorship of Big Brother is
administrated as well as how it runs its citizens. Not only are the people of Oceania suppressed, but
they are also audited through whatever means deemed necessary by the government. They are even
watched through their televisions. Because of this the main character, Winston Smith, placed his
television on a wall in his house so Winston was able to remain outside the range of the telescreen, so
far as sight went. This is where Winston writes his qualms with the government down in a diary.

Many problems are caused by organized crime every day. Criminal organizations are really
sophisticated and manipulative. They are constantly examined by law enforcement officials which
forces them to be furtive, secretive, and cautious. One major problem that we have is the victims that
are or have been a target for the organized crime activities. Crimes include; drug trafficking,
gambling, prostitution, and more. Crimes such as these involve individuals who are buyers and seller
who are labeled as a willing participant. Communities that are faced with this problem are labeled as
the victim because of how organized criminals make their money. The community takes a hit
especially when crimes involve, violence, swindling, or thievery. According to Lyman amp; Potter
(2007), Clearly, criminal associates are often victimized by organized crime members, but law abiding
citizens are also victimized in a number of ways. First, citizens are sometimes the direct victims of
organized crime enterprises (violence, extortion, intimidation, etc.). Second, billions of dollars of tax
revenue from organized crime go uncollected (estimated at $37 billion in lost taxes every year),
resulting in higher tax rates for law abiding citizens. Third, expenses related to law enforcement,

immediate causes were the assassination of the heir of Austria Hungry, Germany declares war on
Russia, Germany declares war on France, and Great Britain declares war on Germany. Some long

Imperialism is a country wanting to take over the world and be the most powerful. The need for raw
materials and new markets Europe starts to take over land in Africa, China, India, and the Middle East.
The fight for obtaining the most land results in European countries fighting over who gets what land.
Another factor was nationalism. Nationalism is the love for one s country and feeling your part of the
country. It results in each country claiming that they are the best. The Arms Race is another
contributing factor to the war. Due to conflicts over land, countries start to prepare for and build up
their armies.
The Allies of World War II consisted of, Great Britain, France, Poland, Belgium, Australia, The U.S.,

Analyzing Scientific Argumentation On The Conflict
Resolving The Conflict 1. Need To Elucidate Scientific Argumentation When a subject matter is
described as beyond logic, it is not meant illogical or that it completely lacks the usage of
argumentation of any kind. If that would have been the norm, Shri Vallabhacharya would not have
argumentatively defended the atomism of Jiva against the heterodox discipline propounded by Jainism
in Chit Prakran of shastrarth prakran nibandha (ि.दी. वन. शभ.प्र.कभररकभ.53) and elsewhere.
Bhagwad Gita states man who is of a doubting nature perishes (संशयात्मा विनश्यवि 4/40 ) . Here doubt
means lacking faith and not lacking curiosity or questions which on the contrary tend to enhance the
virtue of a learner. Similarly, when scriptures state something ... Show more content on

Between the firing electrons and the wall there was a frame deployed to obstruct the passage of
electrons with two slits that allowed them to pass. Electrons, being particles should hit directly behind
the slit, producing particle like behaviour. Something like this However, the electrons instead
produced wave pattern, which is only possible when a single electron passes through both the slits.
Some of the electrons even hit the area directly behind the barrier. Something like this This showed
that electrons have wave particle duality like the Light and it exists in a superposition which is a state
of potential innumerable possibilities of existence. However, what further astounded the physicists
was when a detector was placed to measure the passage of electrons to learn how it passes through
both slits; the electrons immediately collapsed their wave function and reverted to particle like
behaviour. Physicists then decided to act smart and switched on the detector once the electron had
passed through the slit. But it seemed somehow the electrons knew that it was being detected and it
immediately switched to particle like behaviour by adopting the passage from one of the either slit. In
a nutshell, every time the electron was measured, it dropped its superposition and wave function.
What stumps the physicists is the fact that what exactly counts as measurement that leads the electrons
to change their course. There are no concrete

King Edward Viii Research Paper
King Edward VIII, known as David to the family, was the eldest child of King George V and his wife,
Queen Mary of Teck. While growing up, Edward did not have a close relationship with his father
which created a lack of sympathy and understanding between the two. Due to their different
perspectives, they were not able to relate on issues concerning the Crown as (King George V was)
strict and self disciplined... who sought to imbue their children with a strong sense of duty 1. Whereas
Edward would grow bored of the formalities of royal occasions. Although Edward disliked the work
of the Crown, he did multiple tours on behalf of Britain to establish the seriousness of the Monarchy s
role. From 1919 to 1922, he travelled to almost every continent including South America, Australia

Edward to the people, was known for his easy going manner and outward looking personality 2. This
made him popular within society as it was seen as a refreshing side to the democratic attitude of the
British Royal Family. Edward was called one of the boys 3 meaning that he was able to relate to the
public with ease and had great sympathy for the people and their needs. This was an approach he
missed out on during his childhood due to his distant relationship with his parents. Although this was a
valuable gift to have at the time, he would make mistakes that would cause conflict between the public
and the monarchy. One event that caused un uproar between the two was in November 1936 when
King Edward visited South Wales and gave sympathy over unemployed miners. His compassion
towards the miners caused great political and economical interference and was referred as an attack on
the Conservative economic policy. A Liberal MP had noted down Edward saying, something must be
done to find them work 4. The MP responded saying, He responded instinctively to human misery ,

Driven to Their Death
Driven to Their Death I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure
suffering and humiliation. We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.
Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Elie Wiesel once said. Nazis tormented the
Jews all throughout the Holocaust just because they didn t like their race. There have been multiple
movies, books, and graphic novels about the holocaust showing all the traumatic deaths, and other
horrifying events that took place. The graphic novel Maus written by Art Spiegelman shows the
survival story of a man named Vladek, and written by his son Artie. Vladek was a true survivor,
whether it was purely luck or not, but he also cared about other people who were there with him. In
the movie Schindler s List directed by Steven Spielberg this shows the story about the holocaust and
how one man named Schindler saved many men, women, and families. In both stories, there are
multiple motifs such as trains, lists, and death. Both stories show the same motifs in very similar ways.
One way the motifs are the same is that the trains represent their journey to their own death. In Maus,
there are multiple pictures of trains throughout the novel. Trains were used for transportation and
ultimately to send Jews to concentration camps. One of the most important trains was the one that the
Spiegelman s were on when they thought they were going to Hungary, but they ended up being at
Auschwitz.

Government Shutdown Research Paper
Trust and the U.S. Federal Government Shutdown
Amy Price
Arizona State University
Abstract
This trust paper explores the 2013 United States Federal Government shutdown incident along with
the trust theory as it relates to this issue. The more recent shutdown was contributed to the split party
lines and Congress resisting to pass a budget with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in place. Trust
between government and constituents have been a long struggle as public servants work to build trust
after an issue like the Federal Government shutdown occurs. The research provided in the paper
analyzes theories on the reasons for the lack of trust and how public servants can build trust. Not only
does trust involve the political environment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Sydney Carton Essay
Sydney Carton is very important to the plot of A Tale of Two Cities. There are three separate instances
in this book where Carton keeps the plot going, and without him, the story would have ended. The
first was his similarity to Charles Darnay was keeping Darnay out of jail. Without Carton, Mr. Stryver
would not be able to win his cases because Sydney is the brains behind the operation. Finally, he was
executed instead of Darnay, so that Darnay and Lucie could live out their lives together. The first we
hear of Carton is at Charles Darnay s first trial. Charles is on trial for spying on England for France.
Mr. Stryver is Darnay s lawyer and has done almost nothing to help the case, but just as it seems it is
over for Charles, Stryver uses his final defense: Charles Darnay looks exactly like Sydney Carton. At
this time in history, trials were not just at all. Often times public opinion was enough to sentence
someone to death. Just before it seemed like Charles would be convicted, Carton hands Stryver a note,
saying that since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Carton also delivers one of the most iconic lines in the history of literature: It is a far, far better thing
that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than that I have ever known. This
quote tells a lot of who Sydney Carton really is. In the first half of the quote, Carton says that he has
never before made a sacrifice for anyone except himself. In the second half of the quote, he says that
he has never truly known peace in his life, but in his sacrifice he is able to find this peace. Carton is
often viewed as an insignificant side character, but Dickens masterfully weaves characters in
throughout the plot so that each and every character, especially Carton, is necessary to the

Tent Camping Advantages And Disadvantages
What provides better shelter during a camping trip, a hammock or a tent? If you were to ask a casual
camper, they d probably tell you a tent. For experienced campers, however, it isn t quite so easy to
arrive at a decision. You see, both hammock and tent camping have their pros and their cons, so trying
to declare one as absolutely better than the other is a fool s game.
Today, we re going to be playing the fool, so you don t have to.
Tent Camping
Today tents are almost like transportable hotel rooms. Most feature walls that are simultaneously
insulated and breathable, so they keep warmth in while allowing fresh air to continuously pass
through. Some of the most high tech tents even boast electrical connections, so you can charge your
phone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A quality camping hammock will last you for a couple of years and will be backed by a warranty of
some sort, but time will eventually take its toll and it will succumb to wear and tear far sooner than a
quality tent.
Conclusion
There are a significant number of reasons to purchase a tent instead of a camping hammock. The only
problem is that there are also a significant number of reasons to purchase a camping instead of a tent.
Both have their supporters and detractors, all of whom are capable of making excellent arguments to
support their cause.
If you re planning a camping trip with a couple of friends and are able to convince them all to chip in
a couple of dollars towards shetler, there really isn t any reason not to go with a tent. A decent tent will
give you the space you need and will utilize superior ventilation to ensure things don t get too stuffy. A
tent remains a viable option if you re camping alone or with one other person, but if you want to keep
costs to a minimum or want to build a more personal relationship with Mother Nature, a camping
hammock is the way to

Critical Analysis of The Veldt
The Veldt by Ray Bradbury deals with some of the same fundamental problems that we are now
encountering in this modern day and age, such as the breakdown of family relationships due to
technology. Ray Bradbury is an American writer who lived from 1920 to 2012 (Paradowski). Written
in 1950, The Veldt is even more relevant to today than it was then. The fundamental issue, as
Marcelene Cox said, Parents are often so busy with the physical rearing of children that they miss the
glory of parenthood, just as the grandeur of the trees is lost when raking leaves. Technology creating
dysfunctional families is an ever increasing problem. In the story, the Hadley family lives in a house
that is entirely composed of machines. A major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The lions stood looking at George and Lydia Hadley with terrible green yellow eyes. Watch out!
screamed Lydia. The lions came running at them. Lydia bolted and ran. Instinctively, George sprang
after her. Outside, in the hall, with the door slammed he was laughing and she was crying, and they
both stood appalled at the other s reaction. (Bradbury). George s musings about his childrens view of
death was actually a foreshadowing of his own death, They were awfully young, Wendy and Peter, for
death thoughts. Or, no, you were never too young, really. Long before you knew what death was you
were wishing it on someone else. When you were two years old you were shooting people with cap
pistols. But this the long, hot African veldt the awful death in the jaws of a lion. And repeated again
and again. (Bradbury). Finally, the childrens rebellion, which resulted in their parents death, was
foreshadowed when Peter threatened his own father to never turn off the technology. I wouldn t want
the nursery locked up, said Peter coldly. Ever. Matter of fact, we re thinking of turning the whole
house off for about a month.... Will you shut off the house sometime soon? We re considering it. I don
t think you d better consider it any more, Father. (Bradbury). Throughout the story, these instances of
foreshadowing of death

As predicted by HR, the first man to make our list without ever playing in purple is Baltimore Colts
Defensive End, number 89 Gino The Giant Marchetti. I never got to see Gino play live. He retired
nearly 18 years before I was born. Everything I know about him I know from my father, who talks
about Gino the way people my age talk about superheros. He told me Gino was a tough old
sunovabitch, that he refused medical treatment for a broken ankle in the Greatest Game Ever Played
because he felt that his teammates needed him to be on their sideline. He told me how Gino went 9
years without missing a game back when sports medicine consisted of taping it up and a couple belts

Of Prejudice In Frankenstein And Mary Shelley s Lusus...
It is an absolute human certainty that no one can know his own beauty or perceive a sense of his own
worth until it has been reflected back to him in the mirror of another loving, caring human being, John
Joseph Powell. From Margaret Atwood s Lusus Naturae, to Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, and Dan
Barry s The Lost Children of Tuam, each story more tragic than the last, all share a common thread of
prejudice. Be it societal, ethical, or religious, prejudices are the driving force behind the creation of
what many regard as monsters . This constant label of shame isolates its victims and inflicts self
perception of inferiority, which in turn compels a hardening of one s disposition towards society.
Because of her rare affliction, the main character of Margaret Atwood s Lusus Naturae experiences a
complete disconnect from not only her family, but also the world around her. The disdain directed
towards her was palpable. She notes that her cat was the only living creature who wanted to be close
to me, and even then she questions whether her cat was drawn to her or the smell of old dried up blood
(Atwood 3) that was a result of her uncommon diet. Furthermore, she goes so far as to characterize her
own mother s relationship to her as if to a hangnail, a wart (Atwood 3). Her own self worth is
obliterated by the prevailing sense of shame that she believes she has brought to her family. However,
under these conditions she resolves to harden [herself] to loneliness, (Atwood 4) and detaches from
society altogether, making her home in the woods like an apparition among the trees.
Her place as an outcast to society affords her new insight to the rationale of the common folk.
Consequently, after her quarrel with the man in the woods she reflected, When demons are required
someone will always be found to supply the part, and whether you step forward or are pushed is all the
same in the end (Atwood 5). This observation illustrates the impact that societal prejudices have had
on her way of thinking, and emphasizes how she grew to fit the role that had been prescribed to her. In
other words, people find comfort in the belief that monsters are the stuff of legends when in reality
they are bred out of one s own

Social Psychology, The Social Identity
Within social psychology, the social identity tradition (Tajfel, Billig, Bundy, Flament, 1971) argues
that individuals possess more than their characteristic personal identities, which are activated during
interpersonal contact with others; in addition, people can engage in intergroup behavior as informed
by their social identities (Gudykunst Bond, 1980). Such social identities comprise memberships in any
psychologically relevant grouping with which an individual identifies, including kin, peers,
profession, nation, and cultural identity (Galang, Quiñones, Adriano, Portillo, Carvajal, 2015). The
ingroup identification afforded by social identities then allows individuals to distinguish between
people belonging to and excluded from the ingroup (Brewer Yuki, 2007), and to bolster one s self
concept through affiliation with high status groups and individuals (Gudykunst Bond, 1980). In
addition, these social identities are created and manifested in different ways across cultures as a
function of the values endorsed by society, the ways in which society s members construe themselves,
and the manners in which their interpersonal relationships are structured (Feitosa, Salas, Salazar,
2012).
Moreover, social identity theory (SIT) has been invoked as an explanation for a social psychological
phenomenon introduced in Robert Cialdini and his colleagues (1976) research: basking in reflected
glory (BIRG). As reflected in the opening quote, individuals are able to emphasize

Weeping Woman
Pablo Picasso s, Weeping Woman (1937), is a most expressive and eccentric image of a woman in
distress. The geometry and shapes in the painting are imaginative and outrageous, with bright colors
and shapes of boats and flowers that are, to some extent humorous, except for the profound suffering
of the women. The eyes of the women are shaped as boats within a rough sea, spilling tears in the
form of diamonds. Diamond shaped tears are also the nails of her hands, held up to her face in fright.
With a single image Picasso expresses a complex array of human anguish; terror, despair, outrage,
hysteria, and death. The sad and dark eyed woman is Picasso s lover Dora Maar, but the woman is also
a symbol of a victim of war or a witness to the war ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

  • 2. Optomatologist Personal Statement During my high school career, I became fascinated with the workings and functions of our eyes while attending an internship at an ophthalmologist s office. Through my time there I was fortunate to be able to shadow and assist both the ophthalmologists and optometrists. While taking corneal topographies of patients eyes before they were examined, my interest continued to grow and that interest blossomed into a desire to pursue this as a career when I had the opportunity to witness my first eye surgery. Though the pterygiectomy was a simple procedure, I was inspired by the fact that it could allow the patient to see better, changing their life. Predictably, this interest led me to work at an optometrist s office, and during the years I have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I started to attend many nutrition classes, gaining valuable knowledge about the correlations between diet and nutrition and various nutrition related eye conditions. To gain more hands on experience in this area, I began working at the USDA. Through one of the many research projects I worked on, I was able to determine that children are increasingly more prone to adult diseases affecting general optical health at an earlier age. Research indicates that this is largely due to the overall increase in both sodium and sugar intake, in children, and that nutrition is extremely important in overall eye health. Through all of these experiences, the most important thing I have learned is that there is so much more to learn. With continued research the science is constantly growing, with more information uncovered all the time. For instance, I recently attended a presentation by an ophthalmologist, Dr. Rosenfarb, about eye disease and acupuncture. I learned how the eyes related to the qi and all of the organs in our bodies. Though the science is still being researched, the implications of oriental medicine and naturopathy on the fields of optometry and ophthalmology have become of particular interest to ... • 3. Poem And Similes And Annotation In Ode To Books Ode to Books Annotation: I used similes and metaphors such as open the cover like a curtain rising and darkness of night slaughtering the night of day in order to make the poem more vivid and to completely express how much I enjoy books and how much of an escape they are for me. I also repeated the word Books with a capitalized B in order to emphasize the word and the idea that follows. My use of free verse allows the poem to be read with a specific tone and rhythm. This poem relates to my coming of age because I ve always been an avid reader. From when I was little going through picture books, to elementary school starting to read simple chapter books, and on to middle and high school where I can read more advanced books. Books ... I also tend to unintentionally repeat the same verbs in creative writing, so using vivid verbs in War Cries and A Matter of Preference led me to come up with moe verbs to use in my writing. I also believe that writing poetry has allowed me to better connect emotionally with my writing. All in all, I think that writing poetry has made me a better writer in many ways, but I guess we ll see if that s true when I get my next essay grade. • 4. Alexander The Great Of The Greatest Military Geniuses Alexander the Great I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion Alexander III of Macedon, Born into a rich family, Alexander III of Macedon (Greek: Αλέξανδρος Γ ο Μακεδών) or more commonly known as Alexander the Great ( Greek: Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ Μέγας) was destined to be a king. Alexander the Great was also considered one of the greatest military geniuses in history. He was the inspiration for many great leaders and warriors in later generations of many different cultures. Hannibal Barca once ranked Alexander as the greatest general in all of the world . Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, Napoléon Bonaparte, and Julius Caesar are just several of the many that were inspired. Even Julius Caesar once cried and wept when he saw a statue of Alexander because he had never achieved as much as Alexander at the same age. Alexander III of Macedon was born on July 356 BC in Pella Greece into the Argead Dynasty. Even before he was born, several people predicted that he would be very successful and would be invincible when he grew to be a young adult. Below is a translation from Plutarch s original book about Alexander that was written in 75 A.C.E.: It is agreed on by all hands, that on the father s side, Alexander descended from Hercules by Caranus, and from Aeacus by Neoptolemus on the mother s side. • 5. Colonization And Colonization Of Indonesia In Junior high, the history teacher taught us that my native country, Indonesia was colonized by the Dutch for 350 years. The Netherlands is one of the European countries that established its country over Indonesia to take benefits of our rich land such as spices. I was aware our land is very source full of spices, rice, sugar, coffee. The Dutch colonized us with the focus of monopoly through trading. Because of the most important source of the spices of this rich land of Indonesia, the Netherlands profits from our land with tremendous wealth. In colonialism era, the United State of America and the Great Britain maintain a good report to respect their laws. Both countries are willing to allow their colonies to become independent. On the other hands, European country such as the Netherlands, Spain, and France are very restricted to their colonies, for examples, they limited education to certain social groups. Also, Southeast Asia is not encouraged to engage in economic activities. This causes many corruptions that huge problems in these European countries. This colonial authority did not support the rule of law to its own country, it is only to Asian, which is Indonesian. They only control on our people but not their people. Moreover, they control our politic, economic, and cultural. This colonial authority, the Dutch did not provide civil liberties to our Indonesian. • 6. The Fall and Rise of Euro Disney The Fall and Rise of Euro Disney Introduction: Euro Disney is well known as one of the greatest failures in corporate history. Indeed, its initial lack of success was so great that, in an effort to distance themselves from the tainted name, Disney now identifies the site as Disneyland Paris. The discussion here lends some insight into a few of the reasons for Euro Disney s disastrous early performance. History: The French cite for Euro Disney was established in 1985, however the process of determining the theme park s location would be a long one. The process which began in the early 1970s, when the Disney Corporation first seriously entertained the notion of entering the European theme park market would, by 1984, reach a point of serious realization. At this juncture, its key decision makers were considering as many as 1200 different locations throughout the continent, with a determined vision to replicate the model successfully exercised in the United States, where an ideal plot of land would be acquired and converted into its own town. (DLP, 1) This class of candidates would be whittled down quickly according to a very large number of criteria, which would include vacation patterns of Europeans, topography, infrastructure, climate, available land, local economy, labour market and existing touristic attractions. • 7. Cat On A Hot Tin Roof Analysis Horribly unbearable. The majority of people have been in a situation that could be described as just that; unbearable. Most would give up; they would find a way out of the situation they despise so dearly. Then there are those that know their situation is unbearable, but genuinely fear what their life would be like without the situations they have become so used to. These people are afraid to jump into the unknown, just like a cat would be on a hot tin roof. In Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams, there are two characters who would be classified as cats, who decide to stick it out on the roof. Brick Pollitt and Big Mama Pollitt are both burdened with the marriages they occupy. However, both of them make the decision to fight the heat, and resist the jump off of their roof; this place they know as their own comfort zone. Disgusted by a secret he has kept for far too long, Brick drinks away his horrid past. When he gets just the right amount of alcohol in his system, a click sounds in his head, and a peace flows over his being. This click also triggers a tolerance of his bothersome wife, Maggie, and a way of accepting every mistake made in the past. Brick fears the unknown, or perhaps any situation involving the truth about his feelings for his late best friend, Skipper, Big Daddy: I m suggesting nothing. • 8. Comparison Of The Book And The Great Gatsby In The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby, Myrtle, and George all suffer from the same fate of death while attempting to pursue a better life for themselves. All of these characters originate from humble beginnings and work on improving their societal positions. The same story is successfully adapted into the 1974 film, of the same name, directed by Jack Clayton and starring Robert Redford as Jay Gatsby. While preserving the integrity of the story, the film also accurately captures, both in content and in form, the theme of Fitzgerald s story that by attempting to improve one s social class in American society, one effectively starts the path towards his own downfall. By comparing and contrasting the settings, the use of symbols, and the characters in the two versions of The Great Gatsby, the shared theme will be proven. A similarity between the two versions is the setting in which the tale of greed and the pursue of materialistic desires takes place. The film and the book both take place primarily in New York. The story occurs across the span of the summer of 1922 in the West and East Eggs of the Long Island sound. Summer is represented in film with shots of the sun, harshly illuminating both the actors and the scenery. Additionally, in almost every close up shot, beads of sweat are seen glistening on the actors foreheads. The outdoor shots of both Gatsby s and Nick s house include vast patches of short fresh grass that is indicative of the summer. Similarly, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is also implicated in both infectious and sterile inflammatory disorders [32 36] affecting the central nervous system (CNS) such as in Parkinson s disease (PD) [37], multiple sclerosis (MS) [38,39], ischemic stroke [40], traumatic brain injury (TBI) [41] and Alzheimer s disease AD [42 44]. HMGB1 activates cells by differential engagement of several membrane receptors including advanced glycation end products (RAGE), toll like receptor 2 (TLR2), and TLR4 which are primarily responsible for HMGB1 pro inflammatory activity and BBB impairment [45,46]. The lush grass was invested with thriving insects that swarmed on the ground like an overcrowded marketplace. The crickets made a harmonious song that echoed throughout the forest, almost in sync with the repetitive calls of exotic animals that were crawling through shrubbery and soaring high in the leafy giants. Leathery leaves brushed against each other in the feeble breeze, almost as if they were whispering in hushed tones whilst squirrels ran and frolicked in the bushes. A balmy smell lingered in the humid air, mixing with the scent of damp earth. Flowers were dotted across the luscious forest floor; their enticing fragrance leaving an odd taste in their wake. They did not teach academics, farming, or anything else besides military tactics. In document D the text states, [The Spartans] learned to read and write for purely practical reasons: but all other forms of education they banned from the country, Spartans were not allowed to read books or treatises. They could not perform in plays or criticize the government. They could not form their own opinion. Secondly, they only lasted for a little over 300 years. • 13. La Virgen s Role In Aztec-Mexican Culture In addition to the symbol of the snake, La Virgen, plays an important role in Chicana culture as well. Anzaldúa goes deeper into this rich cultural history, and informs us that in Aztec Mexican society, women were able to possess property and were often viewed as mystic beings, having occupations such as curers or priestesses (Anzaldúa 32). Rather than Jesus or God the Father, la Virgen de Guadalupe became the largest symbol in Mexican religion and culture to this day. In fact, Chicana culture does not identify with the Spanish Father, but the Indian Mother. The connection between the symbology of the snake and La Virgen is solidified as Anzaldúa explains the importance of feminine deities, such as the goddess, Coatlicue, or she who wears a serpent skirt (27). This law suggests that energy can be transferred from one system to another in many forms. Also, it cannot be created or destroyed, (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2012). Ultimately, the total amount of energy available is a constant. Einstein s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The laws of thermodynamics and how they are regarded in terms of energy are as such: the first law pretty much indicates that you can t get something for nothing and the second law pretty much indicates that you cannot break even; energy will be lesser than it was before the transfer. The first law governs the quality of energy available from an energy conversion process, whereas the second law governs the quality of the energy available. According to the first law, we will never run out of energy, but according to the second law, we can run out of high quality (useful) energy. The second law also tells us that high quality energy can never be used again. In terms easily understood, not only can we not get something for nothing (the first law), but we cannot ever break even in terms of energy quality (the second law). In this we can realize that we can recycle matter, but we can never recycle high quality energy. References Boulle, P. (2012). In Encyclopedia Britannica. • 16. Sullivan s Influence On American Architecture At the turn of the century, new trends in painting and in architecture emerged to replace the traditional forms of these arts, and introduce new and innovative ideas to the art and architecture of the new century. Artists such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque introduced the cubism and collages, and defied the need for art to be literal and straightforward as much art was before the twentieth century. Architecture was transfigured by architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, who rejected traditional architectural methods and employed new ideals. His architecture was quite known in Europe for its progressive and sleek style. When it came down to deciding on how he would design his works, he followed his system called, purism . Purism involved the consideration of two things: practical need and the search of archetypes. According to Frampton, he wanted only what was practical and necessary to be considered in the designs, and looked for intellectually stimulating and functional shapes. He believed in the constant improvement and innovation of architecture; he did not agree with typical, traditional European style. He based his architecture on an utopia and created all his designs to resemble a modern, city like utopia that was ideal for automobiles. According to Frampton, he said, A city made for speed is a city made for success . Why Was The Bolshevik Revolution Successful There are numerous reasons why the Bolshevik revolution was successful, the most important reason to why the revolution of October 1917 was successful was due to the role of Lenin, this is not to say however that he was the only cause, this essay will explain why the Bolshevik takeover succeeded. A predominant factor in the Bolshevik takeover s victory was the weakness and poor decisions of the provisional government (PG), the provisional government was weak due to numerous defeats in the war and the fact that they did not change how the country was run after the February Revolution which removed the Tsar from power, this meant that the Provisional Government was merely seen as the Tsar with a different face. This is firstly because he was the one to decide that the Bolsheviks would try to stop the war, which was their most popular policy, especially after the brutal failure of the June Offensive. If it was not for this then the Bolsheviks would have not had the support of as many soldiers or workers. The second reason why Lenin was the most important cause was due to the fact that he turned the Bolsheviks into a brand with him as a figurehead and with simple, easy to understand slogans such as Peace, Land and Bread appealed to the masses as they could easily identify what the Bolsheviks supported and why it appealed to them which in turn gained their support. Lenin also created the Red Guard which was very important to the victory as they were the well trained army that fought for the Bolsheviks and it was only with them that they could overcome the PG. Lenin is also important as he was the person who convinced the Bolshevik central committee (controlled by Trotsky) to vote for a revolution , if it was not for this there would have been no Bolshevik revolution in October 1917. Therefore Lenin is more important because he created the resources and gathered the support needed to overthrow the PG by exploiting the PG s weakness , like keeping the war, and Lenin is more important than Trotsky because without the resources and support which Lenin had gained, he would have not been able to pull of his master ... Kyoto Protocol And The Protocol As a basic description the Kyoto Protocol is a document, which legally binds all member countries that are classified as developed to meet specific emission reduction targets. The protocol brings with it several Commitment periods , which as the name suggests are periods of time by which member states are bound to the protocol. The initial commitment period began in 2008 and ceased in 2012. The next began in 2013 and will end in 2020. Currently there are 192 member states to the protocol. It has been determined that developed countries are primarily responsible for the current elevated levels of Greenhouse gases (GHG). The Kyoto Protocol puts heavier goals on the developed countries based on the idea of differentiated but common responsibilities. The Protocol dictates that there are six primary Greenhouse gases identified as contributing the most harm to the natural environment, these being: Methane, Carbon Dioxide, Nitrous Oxide, Hydro fluorocarbons, Per fluorocarbons and Sulfur Hexafluoride (U.S. EPA, N.D.) Each nation has their own individual targets. The average target was a cut of roughly 5%, in comparison to the levels in the atmosphere in 1990 and 2012 (The Guardian, 2012). Some countries have a different approach to the protocol than others. An example of this is the United States, which is yet to ratify the protocol and also happens to be the second largest total emitter (second to China) and largest emitter per capita of greenhouse gases in the world (M. ... • 23. The Nervous System And Peripheral Nervous Systems The nervous system has three general functions: a sensory function, an interpretative function and a motor function. Sensory nerves gather information from inside the body and the outside environment. The nerves then carry the information to central nervous system (CNS). Nervous tissue consists of two main types of cells: neurons and neuroglia. Neurons also so known as nerve cells ) transmit nerve impulses that move information around the body. Central Nervous System and Peripheral Nervous System are Identified as the two major groups of nervous system organs while CNS = brain spinal cord and PNS nerves that extend from the brain (cranial nerves) and spinal cord (spinal nerves). Sensory receptors respond to stimuli and transmit data about them to the brain. In the skin, receptors detect touch, pressure, vibration, temperature, and pain. Elsewhere in the body, more specialized receptors detect light (see How the eye works), sound (see The mechanism of hearing), smell, and taste. The body nervous system detects the changes affecting the body, make decisions, and stimulate muscles or glands to respond. The responses counteract the effects of the changes, where the nervous system helps maintain homeostasis. Neurons vary in size and shape and also differ in the lengths and sizes because of their axons and dendrites. The dictatorship of Big Brother and the American government, both use similar ways to monitor their citizens, but they have different reasons for it. Big Brother wants to closely monitor his citizens so they are obedient by fear and the American government watches their citizens to protect them and their rights. They do this through televisions, spies and surveillance cameras. In the beginning of the novel 1984, the reader is introduced to how the government under the dictatorship of Big Brother is administrated as well as how it runs its citizens. Not only are the people of Oceania suppressed, but they are also audited through whatever means deemed necessary by the government. They are even watched through their televisions. Because of this the main character, Winston Smith, placed his television on a wall in his house so Winston was able to remain outside the range of the telescreen, so far as sight went. This is where Winston writes his qualms with the government down in a diary. Furthermore, the CIA, has been said to have the capacity to break into our everyday consumer electronics.... One major problem that we have is the victims that are or have been a target for the organized crime activities. Crimes include; drug trafficking, gambling, prostitution, and more. Crimes such as these involve individuals who are buyers and seller who are labeled as a willing participant. Communities that are faced with this problem are labeled as the victim because of how organized criminals make their money. The community takes a hit especially when crimes involve, violence, swindling, or thievery. According to Lyman amp; Potter (2007), Clearly, criminal associates are often victimized by organized crime members, but law abiding citizens are also victimized in a number of ways. First, citizens are sometimes the direct victims of organized crime enterprises (violence, extortion, intimidation, etc.). Second, billions of dollars of tax revenue from organized crime go uncollected (estimated at $37 billion in lost taxes every year), resulting in higher tax rates for law abiding citizens. But it seemed somehow the electrons knew that it was being detected and it immediately switched to particle like behaviour by adopting the passage from one of the either slit. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Elie Wiesel once said. Nazis tormented the Jews all throughout the Holocaust just because they didn t like their race. There have been multiple movies, books, and graphic novels about the holocaust showing all the traumatic deaths, and other horrifying events that took place. The graphic novel Maus written by Art Spiegelman shows the survival story of a man named Vladek, and written by his son Artie. Vladek was a true survivor, whether it was purely luck or not, but he also cared about other people who were there with him. In the movie Schindler s List directed by Steven Spielberg this shows the story about the holocaust and how one man named Schindler saved many men, women, and families. In both stories, there are multiple motifs such as trains, lists, and death. Both stories show the same motifs in very similar ways. One way the motifs are the same is that the trains represent their journey to their own death. In Maus, there are multiple pictures of trains throughout the novel. Trains were used for transportation and ultimately to send Jews to concentration camps. • 47. Of Prejudice In Frankenstein And Mary Shelley s Lusus... It is an absolute human certainty that no one can know his own beauty or perceive a sense of his own worth until it has been reflected back to him in the mirror of another loving, caring human being, John Joseph Powell. From Margaret Atwood s Lusus Naturae, to Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, and Dan Barry s The Lost Children of Tuam, each story more tragic than the last, all share a common thread of prejudice. Be it societal, ethical, or religious, prejudices are the driving force behind the creation of what many regard as monsters . This constant label of shame isolates its victims and inflicts self perception of inferiority, which in turn compels a hardening of one s disposition towards society. Because of her rare affliction, the main character of Margaret Atwood s Lusus Naturae experiences a complete disconnect from not only her family, but also the world around her. The disdain directed towards her was palpable. She notes that her cat was the only living creature who wanted to be close to me, and even then she questions whether her cat was drawn to her or the smell of old dried up blood (Atwood 3) that was a result of her uncommon diet. Furthermore, she goes so far as to characterize her own mother s relationship to her as if to a hangnail, a wart (Atwood 3). Her own self worth is obliterated by the prevailing sense of shame that she believes she has brought to her family. However, under these conditions she resolves to harden [herself] to loneliness, (Atwood 4) and detaches from society altogether, making her home in the woods like an apparition among the trees. Her place as an outcast to society affords her new insight to the rationale of the common folk. Consequently, after her quarrel with the man in the woods she reflected, When demons are required someone will always be found to supply the part, and whether you step forward or are pushed is all the same in the end (Atwood 5). This observation illustrates the impact that societal prejudices have had on her way of thinking, and emphasizes how she grew to fit the role that had been prescribed to her. In other words, people find comfort in the belief that monsters are the stuff of legends when in reality they are bred out of one s own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Social Psychology, The Social Identity Within social psychology, the social identity tradition (Tajfel, Billig, Bundy, Flament, 1971) argues that individuals possess more than their characteristic personal identities, which are activated during interpersonal contact with others; in addition, people can engage in intergroup behavior as informed by their social identities (Gudykunst Bond, 1980). Such social identities comprise memberships in any psychologically relevant grouping with which an individual identifies, including kin, peers, profession, nation, and cultural identity (Galang, Quiñones, Adriano, Portillo, Carvajal, 2015). The ingroup identification afforded by social identities then allows individuals to distinguish between people belonging to and excluded from the ingroup (Brewer Yuki, 2007), and to bolster one s self concept through affiliation with high status groups and individuals (Gudykunst Bond, 1980). In addition, these social identities are created and manifested in different ways across cultures as a function of the values endorsed by society, the ways in which society s members construe themselves, and the manners in which their interpersonal relationships are structured (Feitosa, Salas, Salazar, 2012). Moreover, social identity theory (SIT) has been invoked as an explanation for a social psychological phenomenon introduced in Robert Cialdini and his colleagues (1976) research: basking in reflected glory (BIRG).
