PGConf APAC 2018 - PostgreSQL performance comparison in various cloudsPGConf APAC
Speaker: Oskari Saarenmaa
Aiven PostgreSQL is available in five different public cloud providers' infrastructure in more than 60 regions around the world, including 18 in APAC. This has given us a unique opportunity to benchmark and compare performance of similar configurations in different environments.
We'll share our benchmark methods and results, comparing various PostgreSQL configurations and workloads across different clouds.
Xen has made strides in scaling network performance such that it can now saturate 10 Gbit/s NICs and more taking in account aggregate throughput in multi-queued host backends.
Grant usage, one of the main bottlenecks associated with paravirtualizated I/O, has seen a number of improvements in the past years. However, 100 Gbit/s network adapters beckon and 25 Gbit/s will replace current 10 Gbit/s adapters in short order. This will require us to revisit the datapath.
This presentation discusses ways of overcoming this bottleneck and we describe the work we have been doing in the area without compromising the current grant-based model. We discuss a number of topics in this talk, such as page recycling mechanisms, grants versus copying and trends in networking/drivers. Finally we pitch an optional grant-less model in a way that can be managed by adminstrators and is transparent to guests.
Bryan Thompson, Chief Scientist and Founder, SYSTAP, LLC at MLconf ATLMLconf
I will discuss current research on the MapGraph platform. MapGraph is a new and disruptive technology for ultra-fast processing of large graphs on commodity many-core hardware. On a single GPU you can analyze the bitcoin transaction graph in .35 seconds. With MapGraph on 64 NVIDIA K20 GPUs, you can traverse a scale-free graph of 4.3 billion directed edges in .13 seconds for a throughput of 32 Billion Traversed Edges Per Second (32 GTEPS). I will explain why GPUs are an interesting option for data intensive applications, how we map graphs onto many-core processors, and what the future looks like for the MapGraph platform.
MapGraph provides a familiar vertex-centric abstraction, but its GPU acceleration is 100s of times faster than main memory CPU-only technologies and up to 100,000 times faster than graph technologies based on MapReduce or key-value stores such as HBase, Titan, and Accumulo. Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
