This document is a syllabus for an introductory Chinese language course taught in a hybrid format at Irvine Valley College. The course will meet once per week in person and include additional online learning activities. Students will learn Pinyin, 300+ characters, basic literacy and conversational skills. Assessment will include exams, writing assignments, and presentations evaluating vocabulary, character reading, and oral proficiency. The course aims to provide an introduction to Chinese language and culture.

The LMS (Learning Management System) exclusively used for this course is Canvas. Click
“Canvas” from the ivc.edu home page, log on to Canvas, and click on Chinese I class to view
announcements, download instructor’s handouts, and homework assignments. Print worksheets
for each lesson prior to the class.
Access Canvas by clicking on the button at the top of the IVC homepage. Your username is the first
part of your college email (e.g., rsanders2) and your password is whatever you set it to. The default
password is the last 4 digits of your Social Security number + 2 zeros (“00”). For any technical

Students are encouraged to take the language lab to enhance your Chinese language learning. To earn
the 0.5 units, students are required to complete 24 lab hours by Dec 19, 2018. The Language Center is

4. Recommended Apps:
Students can download “Canvas Student” App to their smart phone or iPad. Log in to
Canvas with your IVC user ID and password to access the course material from your phone
or iPad.
Students can download “Voicethread” app to your smart phone or iPad. This is the
application instructor used for all course video/audio lessons.

3) Mac users: Go to System Preferences... Choose Keyboard Choose Input Sources, then click + Select
Chinese (Simplified) - Pinyin - Simplified then click Add Make sure Show Input menu in menu bar is
checked. Use the language icon in menu bar to switch modes.
4) iPhone / iPad users: Go to settings=> general=> international =>keyboards. Add Chinese,
Simplified, pinyin input and handwriting.
INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS
This is a Hybrid Chinese language course for beginners. The instructional methods of this Hybrid
Chinese Course contain both traditional face-to-face seat time and online learning activities.
Instead of meeting twice a week, students meet their instructor once a week, and study part of the
course material with the online learning activities on their own pace. The purpose of a hybrid course is
to take advantage of the best features of both face-to-face and online learning. This Chinese hybrid
course is designed to integrate face-to face and online activities in order to help beginners develop their
communicative competence in the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, while
gaining competence in Chinese culture, exercising their ability to compare aspects of different cultures,
making connections to their daily life, and building links among communities.
Announcements
Announcements will be posted in Canvas and sent to students’ email weekly. Please check your email
regularly, as they will contain important information about upcoming projects or class concerns.

LEARNING PROCEDURE
Two ways of learning activities will be used in this course: In class face-to-face and online activities
1) In Class face-to-face:
The total immersion part of the class is taught entirely in Chinese. English will not be used, and
students are expected to fully participate in Chinese. The information-discussion part of the class is
designed to impart the information and knowledge necessary to successfully speak Chinese language
and learn aspects of Chinese culture. This part of class will be using both English and Chinese, and it is
the time to ask questions, discuss grammar and vocabulary, and discuss social and cultural issues.
In-Class Learning Activities Routine
We will spend roughly 1-2 weeks for each lesson. Each lesson will be taught through the following
activities:
1. Dialogue performance – memorize dialogue, practice pronunciation
2. New vocabulary and grammar, character practice
3. Dialogue expansion: pattern practice, communicative oral activities
4. Listening comprehension activities
5. Reading and writing exercises
6. Discussion of culture topics
7. Quiz and chapter test
8. Group Project - Small groups will perform assigned dialogues in a real-life situations
2) Online Activities
The online instructional materials are designed for students to study at their own pace, and students are
expected coming to class fully prepared. The online activities include audio / video lessons, learning
games, worksheets, listening activities, recording assignments, writing assignments, online homework,
quizzes, and presentations.
Online Learning Activities Routine
Students need to be fully prepared before attending the face-to-face class, announcement will be posted
weekly to remind students working on the following activities:
1. Print a copy of worksheet and worksheet answer of each lesson.
2. Go to Study Units Instructor's video folder, and study along with the instructional audio/video
lessons including vocabulary, sentence patterns, dialogue.
3. Memorize the vocabulary, patterns and dialogue
4. Watch the worksheet instruction audio/video and complete the worksheet. Check the answer
after you have completed.
5. Practice Chinese characters
6. Complete listening and recording assignments
7. Practice online learning games
8. Complete online homework and quizzes
9. Complete online exam

Culture Learning Activities
Cultural activities – Twice per semester, visit a museum or gallery exhibition about China, dine in a
Chinese restaurant, shop in a local Chinese supermarket, or watch a Chinese movie
Cultural project and presentation
COURSE OBJECTIVES
After the completion of this course, the students can expect to be able to understand and communicate
on the following topics
Introduction: You and the other students in the Classroom Settings: Classroom commands,
Names, Numbers to 100 and greater, Greetings, Description of people.

3. Lesson 3: Nationality, asking each other’s nationalities and language
4. Lesson 4: Ask and explain what something is; talk about courses in school

6. Lesson 6: Introduce oneself and one’s family
7. Lesson 7: Exchange addresses and phone numbers, make phone calls
8. Lesson 8: Plans and preferences
9. Lesson 9: Phone Calls
10. Lesson 10: Time and Schedules
11. Lesson 11: Ordering Food in a Restaurant
Students will:
1. Master the use of the Pinyin system as a tool.
2. Learn 300+ Chinese characters and phrases.
3. Develop basic literacy in Chinese characters.
4. Learn to apply vocabulary and patterns learned in a linguistically, socially and culturally
appropriate manner.
5. Participate in short conversations in Chinese on everyday life topics.
6. Write notes, dialogues, and skits in Chinese.
Student Learning Outcome
SLO #1: Course-appropriate ability to interpret Chinese
Students will demonstrate course-pertinent vocabulary and course-appropriate ability to interpret
Chinese with 70% accuracy of proficiency or better.
SLO #2: Interpret spoken Chinese language
Student will interpret spoken Chinese language based on topics listed in the Course Outline of Record
with 70% accuracy of proficiency or better.

SLO #3: Identify course-pertinent vocabulary
Students will correctly identify course-pertinent vocabulary based on topics of listed in the Course
Outline of Record with 70% accuracy of proficiency.
SLO #4: Read and interpret 250 Chinese characters
Students will read and interpret material written in Chinese of at least 250 Chinese characters in length
with 70% accuracy of proficiency or better.
Student Learning Outcome Assessment Method
1. Exam/Quiz - In Course
20 Vocabulary questions embedded in the final exam.
2. Writing Assignment
Students write a paragraph of 100 Chinese characters of a given topic.
3. Presentation
Students are able to do a one minute oral presentation in Chinese of assigned topic related to the
course content.

Instructors are expected to drop any student who fails to attend the class for no reason; and
students may be dropped for non-attendance. However, students are responsible for dropping
the class they are no longer attending; failure to do so will result in a grade of “F”. Due to
enrollment demands, students who do not show up to the first class meeting may be dropped
from this class and your place may be given to another student. Students who do not attend the
final exam will receive “F” grade in this class.
Grading Standards
Your grade will be based on the following criteria:
Grades are NOT rounded up on the final grade in this course.
a. Participation and attendance (15%)
Participation is essential to your success in this class. In distance education courses you are required to
participate just as if you were in a face-to-face course. This means that in order to get full credit for
participation, you will have to complete the recording assignments, online exercises, online quizzes,
and lesson assignments on a timely basis.
You can earn your participation grade by coming to the class prepared and ready to participate on a
regular basis; and by consistently interacting in Chinese with your instructor and classmates. If you do
not need to attend this class to pass the exams, you belong in a more advanced Chinese class. There
are no “excused” absences. Students who arrive late or leave while class is in session will be marked

absent. Students will need to notify the instructor ahead of time, i.e. before the class that will be
missed, and submit homework early if the student cannot attend a class. The instructor may drop
students with 2 absences. If a student registers late and misses the first day of class, it is still
considered 1 absence.
b. Homework and Assignment (35 %)
Homework will be assigned at each class meeting and in the lecturer videos. Students need to
download the homework worksheets from Canvas. It is the student’s responsibility to submit
homework on time. Any late work is regarded as missing work. If a student misses a class, he or she
can email the homework to the instructor or upload to Canvas before the due date. Any work turned
in late will receive no credit. All assignment is due on the due date. No late work will be
accepted. Students should retain all assignments until you receive your final grade in the course.
c. Tests - Vocabulary Quiz, Dialogue Presentation (20%) and Chapter Exam (15%)
For each chapter, there will be a vocabulary quiz and a dialogue presentation. For every 3 chapters,
there will be an exam. Exams may include Pinyin, listening, Chinese Characters, listening
comprehension, reading, and translation of sentences. Students are not allowed to make-up missed
tests. If you miss one part of the unit test, it will be calculated as a zero. If students arrive late, no
accommodations will be made for making up any portion of the exam.
d. Final Exam (15%)
The final exam includes an oral presentation and a written exam. All materials taught in this course
will be tested in the final exam.

NATIVE SPEAKERS 已经会读写中文的学生需遵照所有的课程规定
This beginning Chinese class is far below the level of any native speaker of Chinese. If you do not wish
to learn another language and choose to be in this class in order to meet a college requirement, keep in
mind that your instructor will only give you credit for what you accomplish in this course, and not
for what you already know. Check with your counselor to know more about language requirements
for the four-year institution.
Academic HONESTY
Cheating and other forms of dishonest behavior are destructive to the educational process for all
students, and will not be tolerated in this class. As a result, the following guidelines shall be followed:
1. Students may not submit work that is not totally their own, and
2. Exams must be taken individually with no assistance of any kind.
A. There will be no bathroom breaks during an exam
B. All electronic devices need to be put away during an exam
C. No hats are to be worn during an exam
D. No electronic dictionaries are allowed during an exam.
If you cannot comply with these testing conditions, please drop this class immediately.
Anyone caught copying from others, allowing others to copy his/her work or using information
fraudulently obtained is subject to receiving an “F” in the class. Anyone talking with other students
during an exam will receive a “0” on that exam.
Any student engaged in ANY dishonest behaviors may receive an “F” on the activity, an “F” in the
course, and may be reported to the Dean of Student Services. If you would like more information on

Course Catalogue or page 74 in the fall 2010 Schedule of Classes.
Code of Conduct: Irvine Valley College policy states that electronic communications conducted in the
course web site are “public” communications in the same way that classroom exchanges are public.
Class POLICIES
1) Electronics in the Classroom… Turn off your electronic devices!
It is very disruptive if phones or hand-held devices go off in class, so please show respect to your
classmates and instructor and turn them off before coming in to class. Additionally, laptop computers
may ONLY be used in class as a note-taking strategy. Do not use them for any other reason during
class. Before you are allowed to use a laptop in a class, you must register with me and sign an
agreement that you will only use it for classroom purposes. Further, if you wish to use a laptop in class
you MUST sit in the front row. If you use electronic devices for non-class related purposes, you may
be excused from class.
2) Drop Policy… It’s YOUR responsibility!
Instructor may drop you for excessive absences, but ultimately it is YOUR responsibility to drop the
class. Do not assume that the instructor will drop you. It is your responsibility.
3) Class Conduct… Participate in class, and always respect others
Students are responsible for regulating their own conduct and for respecting the rights and privileges of
others. Failure to show respect for the standards as set forth by the SOCCCD is cause for dismissal

from class and even expulsion (please see pages 98 to 99 of the 2010-2011 Course Catalogue or page
73 of the Fall 2010 Schedule of Classes for more details on the code of conduct).
4) Show up on time!
Please make a point of being ready to go when class starts so we do not lose any time. It is important
that we maximize our meetings.
