This document provides a lesson plan for a 6th grade social studies class to complete a community profession interview project over 4 weeks. The plan details: - Characteristics of the 25 student class from diverse backgrounds - Entry competencies on careers and technology tools to be used - Objectives of choosing an interview subject, creating a script, recording a video interview, and uploading it to a website - Methods, media and materials to be used including computers, cameras, and video uploading website - A week-by-week breakdown of the assignment steps and deadlines - Rubrics for evaluating student performance, media components, and instructor performance. Feedback from students will also be gathered.

TITLE OF LESSON: People and their Professions in the Community

General Characteristics:
Content Area: Social Studies
Grade Level: 6th
Ages: 11 to 12 years old
Number of Students: 25
Gender: 15 girls and 10 boys
Background Composition: The class is composed of students from diverse ethnic
backgrounds such as Chamorro, Filipino, Chuukese, Yapese, Chinese, American,
Korean, and others. Along with the class population is a student with Visual
Impairments. The student is placed in front of the classroom and in a well lit
seating area to accommodate his/her needs.
Entry Competencies:
In this lesson, the students have been introduced and exposed to a variety of
professions or careers that could possibly be of interest to the students. The
list includes but is not limited to the following:
Teacher/Educator
Policeman/woman
Accountant
Doctor
Business Owner
Retail Manager
The students will be introduced and familiarize themselves with several tools
involving the use of technology such as recording devices using a digital
camera or webcam, basic operations of Microsoft Office using Word, and a website
where videos can be uploaded and shared called Motionbox
(http://www.motionbox.com).
Learning Styles:
The students are 85% visual learners, 10% kinesthetic learners, and 5% are audio
learners. To ensure that the students understand the instructions and assignment,
the teacher should assess their comprehension by asking questions and check
their responses, repeat instructions as needed, and provide an example.

In this 4-week lesson the students in groups of 4 will:
1. Choose one individual in their community for the interview project.
2. Create a script using Microsoft Word with the following components:
Introduction, Body, and Closure.
3. Use a recording device such as a webcam or digital camera to create video.
4. Upload the 5 to 8 minute video onto Motionbox (http://www.motionbox.com).
5. Dress appropriately when conducting interview.

1. Preview the Materials: The teacher will check the materials if they are functioning
properly prior to the lesson. During the first week of the lesson, the teacher will
survey the groups of how many students have access to the Internet, email, and
recording devices.
2. Prepare the Materials: To better facilitate the lesson, the teacher will ensure
that materials are available by using a checklist.
3. Prepare the Environment: For safety reasons, the teacher will conduct a safety
inspection of the classroom and ensure that there are no exposed long cords
obstructing the walk ways which can cause students and the teacher to trip and
fall and may result in a serious injury. The teacher will also set up 5 work
stations and label them in numbers.
4. Prepare the Learners: The students will be reviewed of the tools that were
introduced and create a new listing of other professions that they have noticed
within the community.
5. Provide the Experience: The teacher should always be attentive to the groups
and provide feedback as needed. The teacher should also be an instrument to
the success of the project, be available for students’ questions, be open to
creativity, and enjoy the lesson that is being taught.

R E Q U I R E L E A R N E R P A R T I C I P A T I O N
The purpose of this 4-week lesson is to have students begin thinking about future
career options and be familiar with other professions. The students will also be
exposed to tools involving technology. This lesson was created to accommodate
schools that have block schedule. The following procedures are recommended
to be followed or modified as needed:
Week 1:
1. The teacher will group the students in groups of 5 through a count-off. The
students will go to the designated table which is marked by a number. There
will be a total of 5 groups.
2. The teacher will ask students’ knowledge of careers or professions and create
a listing on the white board. The teacher will then introduce the interview
project and each student will be required to ask the interviewee a question. In
other words, every group member will be in the recording of the interview.
Advise students to seek adult assistance especially if project is being conducted
outside of class. This is a great opportunity for parents and guardians to be
engaged in their children’s schoolwork.
3. The teacher will show a video sample using a computer and projector of a
student interviewing a soldier on Motionbox (http://www.motionbox.com).
4. After viewing the video, the teacher will give students class time (about 5 to 10
minutes) to think, discuss, and list down the possible individuals that would
agree to an interview.
5. Assignment due next class meeting: One student from each group will send
an email to the teacher the possible candidate and the profession for the
interview.
6. The teacher will notify the students when the interview project is due which is
during week 4.
Week 2:
1. The teacher will introduce a web tool called Motionbox (http://www.motionbox.com),
navigate the website, demonstrate how to create an account, and upload video
recordings.
2. The students will take turns using the computer to create their Motionbox account.
The account will be labeled as follows:
Username: Group__#__careerinterview
Password: MrsSantos
Email Address: Teacher’s email address

3. The students will be given class time to type their scripts using Microsoft Word.
The teacher will instruct the groups how to create their scripts and must have
the following format:
Introduction: Welcome Remarks
Body: 5 questions
Conclusion: Closing Remarks
This assignment is due during week 3.
4. The teacher will remind the students of the due date of the interview project
which is during week 4.
Week 3:
1. The teacher reviewed and returned scripts back to the groups.
2. The teacher will review with the students about the interview project. The
teacher will advise students to dress appropriately, kindly request the
interviewee if possible, to wear their uniform if available; record and upload
video onto the website (http://www.motionbox.com).
3. The groups will be given class time to practice. The teacher will visit each
group, critique, and provide feedback as needed.
Week 4:
1. Interview projects are due. The groups will present their project.
2. The teacher will ask questions about the class to provide comments on
each video presented.
3. The teacher will evaluate the interview project.

Evaluate Media Components:
Throughout the 4-week lesson, the teacher will aid in the success of the project
by monitoring the use of Medias in the classroom. The teacher will accommodate
and modify procedures, due dates of assignments, and the initial project if
necessary due to failure of computer system and the inability to access the Internet.

Evaluate Instructor Performance:
The teacher should carefully consider students’ interest and acknowledge all
responses with positive or constructive criticism. Ask students to provide
feedback by asking them to comment about the process of the project, their
likes and dislikes, the level of difficulty, the use of the technology tools
(recording devices, uploading, creating the Motionbox account, etc….), and
suggestions on how the process of the project could be improved. The
should be open to all responses of the students regardless if the comments
are either negative or positive. Notes should be marked on the lesson plan
in the appropriate sections of the lesson.
