CHLAMYDIA
Chlamydia :
 It is a common sexually transmitted disease
 It is an infection caused by a sexual contact
(chlamydial trachomatis)
 Incubation period : 7 – 21 days
 Chalamydia is :
i. More than 3 times as common as gonorrhea
ii. More than 50 times as common as syphilis
Mode of transmission
 Vagina
 Anus
 Maternal to fetal
Risk factors :
 Adolescence
 New or multiple sex partner
 History of STD infection
 Oral contraceptives users
 Lack of barrier contraception
Clinical features :
 In women :
 Abdominal pain
 Abnormal vaginal discharge
 Low grade fever
 Dyspareunia
 Pain or burning feeling while urinating
 Swelling inside the vagina or around the anus
 Vaginal bleeding after intercourse
 A yellowish discharge from the cervix that may have a strong
smell
 In male :
 Pain and burning sensation during
micturition
 Pus or watery or milky discharge from penis
 Swollen or tender testicles
 Swelling around the anus
Investigations
1. Culture
2. Serology
3. EIA ( Enzyme Immune Assay )
Treatment :
 Azithromycin 1 gm orally in a single dose
or
 Doxycycline 100 mg orally BD for 7 - 14 days
Complications :
 Other sexually transmitted infections
 Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
 Epididymitis
 Prostate gland infection
 Infections in newborns
 Reactive Arthritis
