While the cylinder block is made of grey cast iron, the liner wears with use and may need replacement, unlike the cylinder jacket that lasts the life of the engine. Piston rings are split rings that fit into grooves on the outer diameter of engine pistons to seal the combustion chamber.

elements help resist corrosion and improve the wear
resistance at high temperatures.)
