SYSTEM
The term system is derived from the Greek word
“Systema”, which means an organised
relationship among functioning units or
components.
A system exists because it is designed to
achieve one or more objectives.
We came into the daily contact with the
transportation system, the telephone system,
accounting system, the production system, the
educational system and currently a computer
system
DEFINITION OF SYSTEM
“A system is an orderly grouping of
interdependent components linked
together according to a plan to achieve a
specific objective”.
The component refers to physical parts
(engines, wings of aircraft, wheels of a car),
managerial steps (planning, organizing,
directing, and controlling), or a subsystem in
a multilevel structure
SYSTEM ELEMENTS
Most of the systems are dynamic in nature they may
undergo change frequently. The environment may be
business firm, a business application, or a computer system.
To re-construct a system, the following key elements must
be considered :
 Output and input
 Processors
 Control
 Feedback
 Environment
 Boundaries and Interface

DATA & INFORMATION
 Data is the raw facts from which useful
information is derived. It is defined as raw facts
or observations, typically about physical
phenomenon or business transactions.
 Example Dates, weight, employee names,
product names, etc
 Information is considered as a valuable
resource required by the management in order
to run the business organization. The processed
data is known as information.
Data Processing Information
Data Information
1.It is the raw material and is considered as
input.
1.It is processed form & it is output.
2.Data is the unstructured format. 2.It is structured format.
3.It is not that much goal or object oriented. 3.It is more objective oriented.
4.Collection of data doesn’t require any
skills.
4.Whereas conversion into information
requires skill.
5. Data is not used in decision making. 5. Information is used for decision making
and action.
6. It has limited value. 6. It has greater value.
7. Data is having its own meaning and
value.
7. The information for one system may be
data for another.
8. Ex. Ram, 20000, salary 8. Ex. Ram is having 20000 salary.
MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM
The initial concept of MIS was to process data
from the organization and presents it in the
form of reports at regular intervals.
The system was largely capable of handling the
data from collection to processing.
It was more impersonal, requiring each
individual to pick and choose the processed
data and use it for his requirements.
MIS DEFINITION
 The MIS is defined as a system which provides
information support for decision-making in the
organization
 The MIS is defined as an integrated system of
man and machine for providing the information
to support the operations, the management and
the decision-making function in the organization.
 The MIS is defined as a Computer Based
Information System
OBJECTIVES OF MIS
 Provide timely information to the top management of speedy decision
making.
 Supply accurate information which strengthen the confidence of
management in decision making
 Generate Relevance information which makes decision making easy
and efficient.
 Information should not be expensive.
 It should be available to every level of management
 Information should cope up with the changing environment and
changing business need
 Information must be adequate and complete.
 Measure the system performance in terms of predefined measure of
output.
 Activate the Control system to correct the midstream adverse
development.
LEVELS OF MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES
CHARACTERISTICS OF MIS
 System Approach
 Management Oriented
 Need Based
 Exception based
 Future Oriented
 Integrated
 Common Data Flows
 Long Term Planning
 Central Database
TYPES OF INOFRMATION SYSTEMS
 Transaction processing system (TPS)
 Office Automation System (OAS).
 Decision support system (DSS)
 Management Information system (MIS)
TRANSACTION PROCESSING SYSTEM
TPS is the computer based information
system design to solve the problem of the
‘end user’. It is totally interactive in nature
and as per as the organization is concern the
low level people are the considered user of
TPS.
OFFICE AUTOMATION SYSTEMS
OAS stands for Office Automation System. It
is used to make the office work more efficient
and easy to do. It creates, stores, modifies,
displays & communicates business
correspondence in written, verbal or video
form. With the development of
computerization, the office work has become
very easy.
DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM
The top-level people use the DSS. DSS can
be defined as computer base information
system used for the supporting the decision
making in an organization. It supports the
decision-making but does not replace the
decision maker.
DSS includes all the other information
system, because it is the top most level of
information system in an organization
FUNCTIONS OF DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM
 Model building
 What if analysis
 Goal seeking
 Risk analysis
 Graphical method
