Moralism In The Poisonwood Bible
Could you ever imagine having to uproot your family s entire way of life to travel across the ocean to
a foreign country that would not fully commit to your belief of Christianity? In Barbara Kingsolver s
intriguing novel, The Poisonwood Bible, she tells the story of a typical all American family from
Bethlehem, Georgia. The readers are able to visualize the family s lives being completely revised by
the chain of events that takes place through their God led journey to the Congo. The Price family is
very familiar to the certain lifestyle the United States offers, where we take advantage of having our
everyday necessities on hand, even down to our Betty Crocker cake mixes, access to fresh drinking
water, protection from an abundance of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Leah, as a child sees her mom taking to the care of her father and their family. Her mom, Orleanna has
to prepare food, get water that is not harmful, make everyone take their pills to protect them from

house which involve cooking, cleaning, and tending to children. (Excerpts from the Awakening, Kate
Chopin) However, some women want so much more out of the world like in, Excerpts from the
Awakening by Kate Chopin. Unlike most women, Leah adapts to her physical environment and
understands that it is her duty to attend to her family. She does not complain, instead she embraces this
task to the best of her ability and she is not afraid to ask for help along the way. Leah protects her
children from diseases by vaccinating them and life here is not easy. There are numerous manual
things that must be done to do the simplest things, like cooking dinner. Leah has to boil water to
ensure it is drinkable, walk long distances to get these resources, and find food to nourish their bodies.
In some parts of the novel when her husband, Anatole is in jail, she runs the household all on her own,
with the assistance of Elisabet Ngembe. Therefore, psychologically Leah comprehends that no matter
the conditions they are under she has to do these things and she makes it a moral trait of

Causes of the Great Fire of London Essay
James Jonathan Gray
Hist 3372
Fall 2009
Dr.Willis
According to Adrian Tinniswood, seventeenth century Londoners vacillated between seeing the Great
Fire of London as an act of terrorism and an act of god. What were the major components of these
explanations and why were contemporaries so eager to search for a reason for the calamity other than
simple accident.
Was the Great fire of London an act of terrorism or an act of God? There are numerous explanations
that attribute to the belief in either. London in the seventeenth century was no paradise and was
actually a quite unpleasant place to live. Coupled with thousands dying from an outbreak of plague,
with the dead sometimes populating the streets of London, it is quite ... Show more content on

This contributed to many a belief that the fire that paved the way for a rebuilding of a new, more
grandiose city was a gift from God. To paint a picture before the fire of London, Tinniswood called
London smoke polluted with deformed buildings, so much so that the magistrate would not warrant
any extreme haste when fire, which was common among a town full of old wooden buildings,
happened there (11). Furthermore the industries in London polluted the air (12). It is easy to picture
how lowly and poverty stricken the pre fire London really was. In addition to all of this, many people
believed apocalypse and judgment were to befall the great city anyways; that it was only a matter of
time until God was to act there. When the British attacked and sunk the Dutch fleet, there was the
presence in the date of three sixes, the year 1666, and this caused great fear, causing many to consider
this a prophecy, and Londoners of the day took prophecies very seriously. This is pointed out in the
book by astrologer John Booker entitled: New Almanack and Prognostication, which Tinniswood
references in his text (20 21). This grand fanaticism in belief of God s judgment upon London among
the people can be further displayed in some writings of one of the Duke s helpers under Lord
Berkeley. He wrote: Nothing can be like unto the distraction we were in, but the Day of Judgment.
Another fellow wrote different words at the site of winds from all directions spreading

Reflection Of Systematic Theology
Systematic theology draws on the foundational sacred texts of Christianity, while simultaneously
investigating the development of Christian doctrine over the course of history, particularly through
philosophy, science, and ethics.Berkhof, Louis (1938). Systematic Theology. Grand Rapids, Michigan.
William B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.. p. 17. The paper will look at three important things during the
duration of this class. They are the lesson learned from the course systemic theology, future
expectation toward the course and the challenges faced during the during of the course. LESSON
LEARNT FROM THE CLASS This class or course has provided a standard lesson on wide range
issues concerning theology. Many topics were raised during the during of this course, but there are
three main things that have inspired me through the duration of this class. They are meaning of
evangelicalism, the destiny of the unevangelized and African theology. EVANGELICALISM One the
books that were used in this class is the four views of evangelicalism written by four authors that has
four different views on the issue of evangelicalism. They are Kevin Bauder, R Albert Mohler, John

Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, A Jewish Scholar, Astrologer And...
Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, commonly known as Maimonides or by the acronym RaMBaM, was a
Jewish scholar, astrologer and physician of the twelfth century considered to be one of Judaism s
greatest sages. His revolutionary publications were essential in the development of the Shulchan
Aruch, the practiced Code of Jewish Law and maintaining Jewish continuity throughout the ages.
Maimonides was born in 1135 in Cordoba, Spain to his mother and father, Rabbi Maimon, and would
go on to study medicine and philosophy in unison with his religious studies.
From a young age, Maimonides father mentored him in the teachings of the Talmud, Torah, Jewish
philosophy and secular sciences. His education in these areas would eventually fuel his writings. In
1148, when Maimonides was just 13, a Sunni Muslim Caliphate movement called the Almohades
invaded Southern Spain, and he and his family were forced to flee their hometown.
The Almohades invasion marked the end of the Golden Age of Jewish culture in Spain, where
although Jews were not fist class citizens, they lived free of persecution and were able to conduct
businesses and lead relatively peaceful lives. The Almohades invasion put great pressure on its Jewish
inhabitants, posing a serious threat to Jewish continuity. Many religious institutions dissolved,
including synagogues and yeshivas, and Sharia Law now dictated everyday life for Christians and
Jews of Spain. Non Muslims were given the choice to convert to Islam or die or else go

Criticism Of Advertising In Advertising
I have found most product advertising to be ridiculous and somewhat laughable. Those in
advertisement have jobs that require them to sell us products and they walk a fine line to entice us to
buy. Sales are the key to success and growth in any organization but should it be at the consumer s
cost? The claims in the advertisements are what sells the product in the end, but many of them leave
out important information and provide us with hyped and over exaggerated claims. Advertising
typically hits a pain spot which pushes people to buy on impulse because they need it and want a
solution to that pain. See, they do their research and know just what to say to make us feel better, want
more, and make our lives much happier. The promises are never ending like the 30 day money back
guarantee that is truly a paradox. After we see these products in advertisement we assume that we can
make good use of them, but how many of these as seen on TV products do you use regularly? Most
products do not measure up to the claims of their advertisements. Let s take any restaurant or fast food
chain s advertising and compare it to what you actually get once you receive your order. My
sandwiches at Subway never looks like what is shown on the television commercial. Instead of
receiving a scrumptious sandwich piled high with meat and vegetables it is more like having to open
the bread to even find meat and vegetables. I think this is your classic bait and switch tactic.

Compare the Central Characters in ‘Medusa’ and ‘My Last...
Compare the central characters in Medusa and My Last Duchess
Carol Ann Duffy s Medusa and Robert Browning s My Last Duchess are two entirely different poems
in many respects. Written in entirely different eras, some would say that they are as opposite as poetry
could be. However, their central characters have some remarkable similarities that strike a chord with
the reader and represent a common theme. In each of the poems, both Medusa and the Duke of Ferrara
represent the fickleness of power and how it fluctuates in daily life. Duffy s manipulation of a paradox
within Medusa displays the extent to which power plays a part in the Greek myth of Medusa. The
extended metaphor of Medusa with filthy snakes that hissed and ... Show more content on

He calls the painting of her a wonder and does not elaborate upon this, suggesting that while he was
fond of his wife, their love was quite subdued. This allows him to remain calm and present a dignified
front. However, as the poem continues, he becomes more obsessive over her and speaks quite
aggressively of what he deems to be promiscuous behaviour. The bough of cherries some officious
fool broke in the orchard for her seems to be a major part of his outrage, as he is offended that she
ranked my gift of a nine hundred years old name with anybody s gift . By telling his companion of this
in a conversation that merely started with mention of a painting, the Duke reveals that he is very much
not in control of himself. These constant tests of his patience which seem very much unintentional on
the Duchess part seem to weigh heavily on the Duke s mind as he says here you miss, or there exceed
the mark showing heavy criticism on the Duchess. He wanted her to let herself be lessoned so , which
shows the extent to which her behaviour troubles him. It also creates the air of superiority in that he
sees himself as a sort of teacher, and her as the student. The loss of control comes where all smiles
stopped together , suggesting a macabre end to the story. Both Medusa and the Duke seem to cause
destruction and chaos around them as a direct result of being emotionally impacted by those they love.

traditional product as a convenient product. That is whether they really want the product in tetra pack
or not. The research will also highlight the reasons behind consumers consumption of Lassi and what
made them consume or not consume Omung Lassi. This product does not have any competitors other
than the traditional home made lassi and the ones sold at milk shops. The research will unveil the
consumers liking for the source of obtaining this product from. And also the extent to which they
prefer convenience while considering consumption. Methodology The descriptive research was
undertaken to test our objective of identifying the consumer perception about the product. A sample of
100 people was chosen; the age of the unit of analyses ranged from 17 to 25 years. People included in
the sample were Lassi consumers. A self administered questionnaire was distributed among the sample

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba Army Pfc. Alec Manning received the honor of being promoted to
private first class by the Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel A. Dailey during his recent visit to Joint Task
Force U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba at the Seaside Galley June 11.
Manning, a Benton Harbor, Michigan native and assigned to the Joint Task Force s 525th Military
Police Battalion, said, My team leader came to me and he asked who I would like to be pinned by. I
knew he [sergeant major of the Army] was coming to the island pretty soon.
He did not think much about what he had said until Sgt. 1st Class Kale Webster, a platoon sergeant for
the 525th MP Bn., asked him a similar question while talking about his promotion, said Manning.
Manning said, I was talking to my platoon sergeant [Webster] and told him that the sergeant major of
the Army was coming and I said, I heard the sergeant major of the Army is coming; how about that?
Initially, I was kidding, I wasn t serious.
Webster told Manning that we can make it happen if that is what he wanted, said Manning
Manning made an inquiry to me about his promotion because he knew that the sergeant major of the
Army was coming and if it was a possibility that the he could promote him, said Webster. I fired off an
email to the first sergeant and sergeant major and it snowballed from there.

Philanthropy Is Worthwhile
Coming into this course, I had always thought of philanthropy as wealthy individuals giving out their
funds to nonprofits that caught their interest. I certainly didn t realize the great amount of effort and
time that is necessary to make philanthropy effective and worthwhile. Achieving lasting and positive
change isn t as easy as having the money to do it, you also need to be willing to think up possible
solutions and adjust when they re not working. Being a true philanthropist can end up being a full time
job as Bill and Melinda Gates discovered. I had never really thought of philanthropy as a frustrating
and difficult task as it seems so simple in theory but now realise that more often than not it is the
complete opposite. I also was unfamiliar with the concept of philanthrocapitalism. I am now
somewhat unsettled by how much power the wealthy have on which issues get attention but at the
same time hold the belief that it s bound to help more than it hurts. I also was unaware of how much
the NGO sector has increased in recent years. This was largely due to a general frustration with the
way problems were being dealt with. This led people to crave some new innovation and made them
more likely to support the social entrepreneurs who were creating organizations to fix these problems
in new ways. Increased freedom from authoritarian governments in many different countries has also
helped increase the sector as as a growing surplus of wealth. I think it is extremely exciting to

My Dreamland Journey
There was approximately 586 miles between me and the place I was meant to be. Reno the land where
either your dreams come true or they come to die. I had tried so hard not to go, the journey was hard
but worth it. My Mother and Father were the ones that helped me get to where I am. My father packed
all my of my belongings for the journey to the dreamland. The plan was to leave in the morning, little
did we know there was so much we could not pack for, this was also a mental trip. In the morning we
packed all of my belongings into our automatic carriage, the journey is set to take off. We leave for
our trip and we will leave as a pair but only one of us will return to the homeland. My father says that
it will be a couple of hours before we reach a place for some food so it is crucial for us to have full
stomachs as we leave but we do not. So we have to stop as soon as we can for some food. Off to the
side of the road we see a maiden selling some fruit that could quench not only our empty stomach but
it will give us some important nutrients that actually make our taste buds blossom unlike the bland
water that we packed for our long journey. We stop and the fair maiden says that her fruit is the best of
the land, My father and I are very skeptical of this, because the fruit looked dry, weathered and not
very appetizing. We needed some sort of nourishment to survive the trip to the promise land, we
purchased the weathered fruit and to our surprise this was some of the best

From respecting your enemy to understanding your own weaknesses the author provides the reader a
strategy to succeed on any battlefield.
Historians estimate that the Art of War was written in China in around the fourth century. Although the
book was written over 2,000 years ago it currently sits atop every critical reading list for both the
military and civilian world. Sun Tzu was a General so the book is geared more towards the military,
much like the tools you learn as a service member the strategies used in this book can be employed
within all walks of life. It has had an impact on today s modern society by offering a methodical way
of thinking that is applicable in just about any circumstance. The Art of War teaches a form of critical
thinking which is essential to mission success. Critical thinking is reasoned thinking, a disciplined
thinking that is clear, rational, open minded, and informed by evidence (dictionary.com). Great leaders
have been known to employ this strategy as part of their decision making process. By clearly defining
your intentions you can begin to view the path towards your desired goal. The first of thirteen chapters
entitled Laying Plans explores the fundamentals of leadership. Moral law according to Sun Tzu causes
people to be in complete accord with their ruler, so they will follow him regardless of their lives,

finally agreed to elevate the railroad and initiate construction of the game changing High Line. In the
book, Public Art on the High Line, it states, From 1934 to 1960, it had been considered a game

death rate of train related accidents. Although, the rise of interstate highways and commercials airlines
decreased the need for the High Line. Meat and good were not transported from the High Line

The Caribbean And C.l. R. James
The Caribbean and C.L.R. James
I was sitting on a beach in Jamaica reading a collection of C.L.R. James s occasional writings on
cricket (Grimshaw 1986). The place had once belonged to Errol Flynn. My daughter was playing on
the edge of the sea. James had been Neville Cardus s deputy as the Manchester Guardian s cricket
correspondent in the 1930s. I found myself reading about my father s heroes in the Lancashire cricket
team of that period as if it was today s sports news. I had been devouring everything I could by James
since I came to Jamaica to help establish a new graduate school for social science research. I knew
that he had lived in Lancashire when he left Trinidad for Britain. It occurred to me that we had lived in
the same places, the Caribbean, Britain, America, Africa in a different sequence, at different times and
with very different trajectories. Now, watching my daughter play on that exotic beach, with my father
s stories from childhood coming alive again, the gap between this old black man and myself was
collapsed into a single moment by the compelling immediacy of James s prose. Generation and racial
differences were erased in an epiphany of timeless connection. I felt compelled to meet him and so I
wrote the first and only fan letter of my life.

Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman Essay
Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman
In the book Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman, the central thesis that he tries to point out is
that emotional intelligence may be more important than I.Q. in determining a person s well being and
success in life. At first I didn t know what Goleman was talking about when he said emotional
intelligence, but after reading the book I have to say that I agree completely with Goleman. One
reason for my acceptance of Goleman s theory is that academic intelligence has little to do with
emotional life. To me, emotions can be just as intelligent as your I.Q. In this essay I hope to provide
sufficient evidence to show why I agree with Goleman s thesis on emotional intelligence.
The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Goleman states, Emotional aptitude is a meta ability, determining how well we can use whatever other
skills we have, including raw intellect. People that have high emotional intelligence are more likely to
be satisfied and effective in their lives. Others who have trouble with this cannot manage themselves
so their ability for successful work and clear thought are altered.
In contrast to this, you can say that I.Q. is better than emotional intelligence. Having a high I.Q. does
offer a lot of benefits. Goleman states that people with a high I.Q. are ambitious, productive, and
uneasy with sexual and sensual experience. That high I.Q. people are the caricature of the intellectual,
adept in the realm of mind but inept in the personal world. And all of this is just for the men. Goleman
states, The profiles differ slightly for men and women. High I.Q. women have intellectual confidence,
are fluent in expressing their thoughts and have a wide range of intellectual and aesthetic interests.
Goleman also does point out that these are extremes and that everyone mixes I.Q. and emotional
intelligence in varying degrees. But this does give us an instructive look at what each of these
dimensions adds to a person s qualities.
In the book, Emotional Intelligence, Goleman talks about two psychologists (Sternberg and Salovey)
who have taken a wider view on intelligence and give terms of what they think it takes to lead a
successful life. They mention five

Plenti Case
Background
American Express (AXP) recently launched a multi sponsor coalition program called Plenti in which
sponsors (e.g., Exxon, Macys, Rite Aid, and ATT) issue loyalty points which can be redeemed across
them and are valid for 3 years. In 2014 we were negotiating participation contract with Rite Aid.
Under their existing loyalty program (Wellness+), Rite Aid issued reward dollars (+Ups) which were
valid for 2 weeks and could be used only within their stores. Rite Aid was concerned that if they join
Plenti that they will issue a large number of loyalty points which will be redeemed at other partners
especially the Grocery partner and they will be effectively subsidizing the program for them.

We used Census data to estimate customer shopping frequency at sponsors and geographic overlap.
We estimated approximately 70% of coalition members stay in Rite Aid s footprint while only 40% of
members will be enrolled through Rite Aid. The analysis implied $30 $40M redemptions will happen
at other sponsors within Rite Aid s footprint.
We estimated we could influence redemption behavior at Rite Aid by running promotions (e.g., 1000
points are worth $12). So by spending $2 $6M we could influence $10 $30 of redemptions at Rite Aid.
As we discussed with Rite Aid, their concern was more around losing margin on sales associated with
point redemption. At 30% margin it implied risk of $3 10M risk each year
Result
We combined the information and agreed with Rite Aid to reimburse them for margin shortfall if
points redeemed in stores was less than points redeemed outside their stores and also proposed annual
cap of $3M $9M, with claw backs if are able to outperform in subsequent years.
The structure helped address Rite Aid s concern and at same time limited our risk to $2 6MM each
year which was significantly lower than the revenue

Stump-Watchers In Han Feiizi s
Han Feizi does not like the way of the former kings, he thinks that it is an old thing to do. Han Feizi
also says, Those who think they can take the ways of the ancient kings and use them to govern the
people of today all belong in the category of stump watchers (Pg. 98)! This category that he is putting
them in, I think is almost like the lowest of the low. Stump watchers are people who think something
that happened one time will happen repeatedly. He just wants to put a modern way of thinking on the
old. The way that he is going about it though I think is completely wrong because it is hard to uproot
people s lives, and tell them that they are all wrong. Instead, he could just have tried to bend the rules

Doubt would come in the form of showing ambition to gain the throne. I think this is apparent when
Han Feizi says, The beast called the dragon can be tamed and trained to the point where you may ride
on its back. But on the underside of his throat, it has scaled a foot in diameter that curls back from the
body, and anyone who chances to brush against them is sure to die (Pg. 79). I think this quote is
talking about ambition and how it can get you killed if you do not follow the law. The law must be
clear so that subordinates do not try to become the king. Becoming the king in the sense that they are
not following the rituals assigned to them and they are following the rituals of the king. To finish off
the quote and how it is relevant to this chapter Han Feizi say, The ruler of men too has as his bristling
scales. Only if a speaker can avoid brushing against them will he have any hope for success (Pg. 78).
This is saying for someone to come into office or ministry that they should not butt heads with the
king. They should abide by the laws and then not go outside of them. For when they go outside of the
laws then they will be punished for the laws are only beneficial for the king. Someone who is going to

Economic Chaos And Confusion Following The American...
The combination of economic chaos and confusion following the American Revolution with the
virtually nonexistent economic powers of the federal government under the Articles of Confederation
put US in a very poor economic position upon the arrival of the Constitution (American Pageant 161).
This, however, changed under the Constitution and thus during the administration of Washington as
the federal government could now have a large say in the economics of America. After being put into
office, Washington established a cabinet and assigned Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding
fathers, to be the Secretary of Treasury. Knowing that debt and the growing interest rates were a very
large domestic problem, Hamilton set out to create a plan for a strong economy. He first implemented
tariffs, which are taxes on foreign goods coming into the country, into his plan, hoping that it would
stimulate manufacturing within the country (Chernow 163). Although this did succeed in stimulating
industry within America, it also angered many Americans in the south and west because they did not
manufacture many goods, but were rather mainly consumers and merchants who were those being
taxed the most (Chernow 153).
Another component of Hamilton s plan for economic aid was the federal assumption of state debt,
which caused many mixed sentiments between the states. On one hand, the states that owed a large
sum of money were very happy as they did not need to pay the debt anymore, at least to the

Pre Colonial Maori Society
Pre colonial Maori society was based on kinship groups; hapū, iwi and whanau. These groups are
connected to common ancestors and the land and these ties are still integral to maori communities
today. (Byers, 2002) As colonization took place, the Treaty of Waitangi; New Zealand s founding
document sought to guarantee the protection of Maori culture and customs but this didn t result in
recognition for the value based system of social control which Maori had in place. (Vieille, 2010)
Within the zeitgeist of post war society where rates of urbanisation soared, Maori people comprised
80% of the rural population and over the next forty years, the Maori rural population decreased as
many became a part of the urban population. (Durie, 2007) This demographic revolution occurred due
to the government s acquisition of land, resulting in great changes with many Maori being
disconnected from their traditional ways of life. (Durie, 2007) As these shifts continued, support
networks of the whanau or extended families which were once source of strength of maori
communities slowly disappeared and maori were become more often at the receiving end of hostile
behaviour. (Durie, 2007) Mana in this new urban society was measured differently and it was regarded
more in terms of material possessions in comparison with the society they were used to which
recognized mana as a sacred spiritual element within individual dignity. (Durie, 2007) The influence
of the marae on the individual and the

Causes and Consequences of Operation Barbarossa
On June 22nd 1941, German forces crossed the Russian frontier and began to fight their way into
Soviet territory. Operation Barbarossa, Hitler s codename for the attack on Russia, had begun. In this
essay I am going to describe the causes, events and consequences of Operation Barbarossa. What
happened when the unbeatable Hitler and Germany met the sheer determination and patriotism of
Stalin and the USSR?
There were many reasons that contributed to Hitler s invasion of the USSR.
Hitler had always harboured a hatred for the Slavs, he thought they were inferior, impure people who
were only fit to be used as slaves. This was a racist attitude ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

They had signed the Anti Comintern Pact in 1936 with Japan, a treaty that specifically opposed
communism, and therefore Stalin s Russia. This showed Hitler was clearly opposed to Stalin and his
principles, which is why entire world was shocked when news of the Nazi Soviet Pact reached them.
In 1939 Hitler and Stalin signed an agreement that meant they formed a temporary alliance. This non
aggression pact could not last; the leaders simply aimed to protect themselves from attack. Hitler and
Stalin were complete political opposites; at one end of the scale was Communism, and at the other end
was Fascism. Hitler and Stalin represented the two political extremes. It was obvious to the world that
this treaty of peace would not last for long.
Western Europe had been safely conquered, except for Britain, which was so weak it would not be
able to attack for several years. As Germany was still at war with Britain when Operation Barbarossa
was beginning, it seemed to Hitler that if the Soviet Union could be defeated it would make the British
more willing to accept peace terms. The Nazi reputation would have received a huge boost people
would become even more fearful of their power.
Sure enough, on December 18th 1940, Hitler signed Directive 21, also known as Operation

Research Paper On Tumbl
I started using a Tumblr for my Social Media class. When I first started using Tumblr, I could tell that
it was a much different platform than Facebook. The things I would post would just not go over well
with my family and friends who would just believe what they would see on television. I ve had bad
experiences on Facebook for posting just about everything, but that was a while back. They took quite
an offense to some of the things I would post about that are going on in not only America but on a
global level. Let s begin with my experiences and expectations with Tumblr first.
Since opening up my Tumblr account, I decided to be more enigmatic and in the dark. I would post
some simple blogs each week on the Comm2311 blog, but no one really replied to them even after I
commented and clicked like on their blogs. I really didn t have any expectations, and I was still
enjoying being part of a new social network. When on a new type of social media, the first thing I like
to do is test the waters in a sense. I like to see how people use it and how everyone is reacting before I
start posting lots of information. After some consideration, I wondered what would happen if I
breached social media etiquette and started sharing random YouTube videos and off topic posts on our
Comm2311 blog.
The first time I broke social media etiquette on Tumblr was when I posted a random YouTube video
and captioned it Feminism is a Prison without any context on my class Comm2311 blog. I

Alabama Short Stories
In Alabama, in the country, next to a dirt road and a muddy lake that was full of green water, where
you couldn t go to sleep because the frogs croaked too loud, there was a large house. The large house
was made of splintery wood, and was inhabited by only one person. Now, the lake that his house was
built on had been where a boy named Ronald Pratt had been ran over after removing the bricks from
in front of the wheels of a flaming portable, saving the lives of many kids after the portable rolled into
the lake and the fire was extinguished. One day, the man who owned the house was in his bed at 8:30
pm and he heard a whisper. He couldn t make out any words, but he heard it all right. He pulled out a
flashlight and grabbed his rifle to go and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Five minutes later, he had drowned. A week later, detectives came to investigate his death. They found
it odd that he had drowned in water just shy of a foot deep. The officer knew how to swim: they had
seen him complete triathlons. So what had happened to him. They decided to question the man living
in the house. He claimed that there was a ghost in the lake, and that the officer must have been killed
by it! The detectives found this preposterous, and dismissed the man as crazy. At 11:00, the detectives
were still there. They heard the whispering. Maybe the man was right! They thought. Maybe there
WAS a ghost. They left with a report saying that he drowned, but they didn t know why. In the end,
the man moved away from his old house by the lake. The county renamed the lake from Lake Fletcher
to The Haunted Lake. Over the years, three foolish men waded into the lake. All died in the shallow
water. The county put signs up saying NO SWIMMING. The lake became a popular tourist attraction,
and visitors would come from all over the south to see the Haunted Lake. Also, no one s been
swimming in it ever since. You would have to be FOOLISH to go in a place where a ghost

The, Fables, And Fairy Tales With Human And Animal Characters
History has shown that people of different generations have conceived stories that highlight values
and moral lessons. In the form of parables, fables, and fairy tales with human and animal characters,
the stories aimed to help children and adult discern right actions from wrong. To this day, parents
continue to use these stories to convey ethical teachings. As a reflection of my past and appreciation of
my present as well as my positive outlook of the future, in this paper, I ponder about the stories my
parents imparted to me while at the same time, I express my appreciation by telling a story to my
children that I hope they would carry with them in their old age.
Childhood Ethical Teachings
As children, we were all told stories by our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not learning from the incident, Kenny kept tricking the villagers by always crying wolf even if there
was none. One day the wolf came, Kenny yelled at the top of lungs, but the village elders did not
come this time because they thought the boy is lying again. The wolf ate all the sheep and ran into the
forest and Kenny was left without a flock.
The story of the boy who cried wolf has taught me the importance of honesty. From childhood to
adulthood, in both my personal and professional lives, I have practiced honesty because a lie, more so,
repetitive lies can cause you to lose the trust of people around you. As one of the leaders in my work
place, the story reminds me that once the trust is loss, it is hard to gain it back.
For My Children
When I think of my children, I want to see things from their perspectives so that I can understand
them better. In this digital age, the easiest way to convey stories to them is through their gadgets. With
that in mind, I would like to teach my children importance of honesty the way my parents taught it to
me. So, here is the story.
Once upon a time, there was this boy name T.A. from an average family. T.A. s parents work in a farm
and they just earn enough for their basic needs. The family does not have extra money for the latest
toys and electronic gadgets. As a young boy, T.A. sometimes get envious of the other kids in the
community with new cellphones, tablets, and electric operated toys. Because his parents love T.A.

Saving Lives in Traveling through the Dark by William...
Saving Lives
The most wonderful thing in the world is being able to save the life of another. Some people have this
chance and some people do not. The people that have not had the chance might have never been in a
situation to save a person s or thing s life. Some people might have been in a situation to have saved
someone or something and not chosen to act on it. The situation can be unnoticeable and you would
have to think about it and observe the details. The poem Traveling through the Dark by William
Stafford is about making the right decisions and saving lives.
In this poem, the speaker will tell us the story of how he made the correct decision and saved the life
of many people. Traveling through the dark I found a deer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I dragged her off; (Stafford 5 8). Once the speaker stopped the car he went and observed how
dangerous the situation was. The speaker decided to drag the doe into the river so no one would
swerve to miss the deer and become injured. She was large in the belly. My fingers touching her side
brought me the reason her side was warm; her fawn lay there waiting, alive, never to be born. Beside
that mountain road I hesitated (Stafford 8 12). Once the speaker touched the belly of the doe he
realized that she was pregnant. The side of the doe was still warm so that meant her fawn was still
alive. The speaker then had to think about throwing the doe into the river, because he did not want to
kill her fawn. I thought hard for us all my only swerving , then pushed her over the edge into the river
(Strafford 17 18). The speaker tried to think of another way to keep the deer out of the road and save
her fawn but he could not figure out a better way for everyone. As the thoughts ran through his mind,
he pushed the doe into the river. The speaker decided to sacrifice the doe s fawn in order to save more
peoples lives.
The speaker of the poem is a man traveling down the road at night. The speaker is not just speaking to
a certain group; he is speaking to all mankind. The speaker is in a situation where he has to make a
decision. He is telling us his thoughts and what he thinks would be the right choice. The

Textual Analysis Of Rhetoric
The word rhetoric has multiple origins, but it s mainly from French and Latin. The definition of the
word is meant to use to persuade or influence others. This was the study of principles and rules to be
followed by a speaker or writer striving for eloquence. Formulated by the ancient Greek and Roman.
Rhetoric is normally advertised we see on social media or T.V. aiming to try to persuade us to buy into
what they are selling. However, manipulation is also a type of advertisement aimed to change our
point of view into what they want. But manipulation uses a series of tactics that will force you to
change your mind. Manipulation can include physiological or physical strategies used to alter the final
outcome in their favor.

Start Your Own Soccer Club
All great soccer clubs have started from nothing. The road to anything great, begins with hard work
and dedication. The amount of work that people put in for something they love is very important for
the outcome that they want. Everyone knows that if you work towards your dreams, your dreams will
come true, like owning a soccer club. To start your own soccer team or club, you will need to know
the fundamentals of what it takes to create and contribute to the foundation of the team. You will need
to start somewhere, and that somewhere is getting your national affiliation. After you are registered,
you will have to figure out how you are going to pay for everything. Hiring the right people for the job
is important. You want someone who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the Fargo Club, a national affiliation is the level your team will be playing in and against
other clubs. When a club gets their national affiliation, they can play other clubs in the same national
affiliation. Having this also gives you the right to have insurance for your club. After you have
finished applying for the national affiliation, you will need to find out your legal status, which is your
club s legal and financial transactions of all actions during the course of the club s history.(Fargo
Soccer Club) You will need to start funding the club s costs. There are many ways to raise money for a
club, like finding sponsorships that will support your club and allow you to represent them on the
field. In general, club fees must be collected, fees that all players will have to pay before playing in
their first real game. You will first need to start a bank account for your club. Once you have started to
charge the players for playing on the team you will need to file that with the Secretary of State. All of
the payments will be sent to the account for safe keeping. These payments will pay for more than legal
items. The money you get for everything will be evenly distributed throughout the whole club. You
will need to find the person that will be willing to work for you and your cause. The BOD, or Board of
Directors, is the main part a club that needs to function properly. The board consists of four main
parts: the President,

A Summary OfLetters From The Corrugated Castle
In Letters from the Corrugated Castle, a 13 year old girl named Eldora writes a series a letters
describing everything that is going on in her life. She had believed for years that her mother had
passed away when she was quite young. Eldora lived with a very nice couple who had been very kind
and taken Eldora in as their own. Eldora called them Aunt and Uncle. At the beginning of the story,
Aunt, Uncle, and Eldora all packed up their belongings from their home in New Bedford,
Massachusetts and left for a new life in the chaotic city of San Francisco, California.
One day, Eldora received a letter from her mother explaining a lot of unanswered questions. Eldora
was thrilled to know that her mother was not dead, and was alive and quite well. Eldora s mother said
that she would soon come by to pay Eldora a visit and to tell her why she had been unable to care for
her the past few years. However every time she was due to visit, she would have something come up
and not be able to visit. Until after about the 3rd reschedule, when she was finally able to come into
the city for a visit. Eldora was scintillating with happiness and very eager to see her mother for the
first time in what felt like forever. When she saw her mother and she immediately began to look for
every similarity, such as eyes, voice, hair, even the way that she walked.
Aunt seemed to have quite a few questions about why and how everything had happened. So mother
then told a story of how she

Zimbardo s Experiment, Studying The Way Prisoners And...
Likewise Zimbardo s (1971) experiment, studying the way prisoners and guards interacted,
demonstrated similar ethical failings, such as consent gained without individuals being made fully
aware of the involvements; physical, emotional and psychological harm subjected; violation of rights,
including privacy, respect, confidentiality and the ability to withdraw (). Fascinated by the volume of
ordinary individuals who executed terrible things to others during WWII, Zimbardo predicted that all
people, even the good, had the potential to conduct malevolence when sited in the correct environment
(Haney et al, 1973). In a mock prison participants were recruited to play a role, half as prisoners and
the rest as guards. Both were dressed accordingly, with the guards wearing a uniform with mirrored
sunglasses which promotes anonymity as their emotions are obscured, but yet denotes their position of
power and authority. According to Zimbardo (2000) these conditions of deindividuation allow for the
facilitation of evil. Subsequently it becomes acceptable to enforce measures which degrade prisoners
of their self respect, including being stripped, deloused and ordered to carry a chain around their
ankle, whilst the mandatory wearing of a smock and a cap made from a stocking demoralized them as
it impacted upon their masculinity. Additionally, not only were prisoners assigned a number by which
they were referred to, denying them of their identity, but each area of their daily

  • 2. Moralism In The Poisonwood Bible Could you ever imagine having to uproot your family s entire way of life to travel across the ocean to a foreign country that would not fully commit to your belief of Christianity? In Barbara Kingsolver s intriguing novel, The Poisonwood Bible, she tells the story of a typical all American family from Bethlehem, Georgia. The readers are able to visualize the family s lives being completely revised by the chain of events that takes place through their God led journey to the Congo. The Price family is very familiar to the certain lifestyle the United States offers, where we take advantage of having our everyday necessities on hand, even down to our Betty Crocker cake mixes, access to fresh drinking water, protection from an abundance of ... (Excerpts from the Awakening, Kate Chopin) However, some women want so much more out of the world like in, Excerpts from the Awakening by Kate Chopin. Unlike most women, Leah adapts to her physical environment and understands that it is her duty to attend to her family. She does not complain, instead she embraces this task to the best of her ability and she is not afraid to ask for help along the way. Leah protects her children from diseases by vaccinating them and life here is not easy. There are numerous manual things that must be done to do the simplest things, like cooking dinner. Leah has to boil water to ensure it is drinkable, walk long distances to get these resources, and find food to nourish their bodies. In some parts of the novel when her husband, Anatole is in jail, she runs the household all on her own, with the assistance of Elisabet Ngembe. • 3. Causes of the Great Fire of London Essay James Jonathan Gray Hist 3372 Fall 2009 Dr.Willis According to Adrian Tinniswood, seventeenth century Londoners vacillated between seeing the Great Fire of London as an act of terrorism and an act of god. What were the major components of these explanations and why were contemporaries so eager to search for a reason for the calamity other than simple accident. Was the Great fire of London an act of terrorism or an act of God? There are numerous explanations that attribute to the belief in either. London in the seventeenth century was no paradise and was actually a quite unpleasant place to live. Coupled with thousands dying from an outbreak of plague, with the dead sometimes populating the streets of London, it is quite ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This contributed to many a belief that the fire that paved the way for a rebuilding of a new, more grandiose city was a gift from God. To paint a picture before the fire of London, Tinniswood called London smoke polluted with deformed buildings, so much so that the magistrate would not warrant any extreme haste when fire, which was common among a town full of old wooden buildings, happened there (11). Furthermore the industries in London polluted the air (12). It is easy to picture how lowly and poverty stricken the pre fire London really was. In addition to all of this, many people believed apocalypse and judgment were to befall the great city anyways; that it was only a matter of time until God was to act there. When the British attacked and sunk the Dutch fleet, there was the presence in the date of three sixes, the year 1666, and this caused great fear, causing many to consider this a prophecy, and Londoners of the day took prophecies very seriously. This is pointed out in the book by astrologer John Booker entitled: New Almanack and Prognostication, which Tinniswood references in his text (20 21). This grand fanaticism in belief of God s judgment upon London among the people can be further displayed in some writings of one of the Duke s helpers under Lord Berkeley. He wrote: Nothing can be like unto the distraction we were in, but the Day of Judgment. Another fellow wrote different words at the site of winds from all directions spreading ... • 5. Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, A Jewish Scholar, Astrologer And... Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, commonly known as Maimonides or by the acronym RaMBaM, was a Jewish scholar, astrologer and physician of the twelfth century considered to be one of Judaism s greatest sages. His revolutionary publications were essential in the development of the Shulchan Aruch, the practiced Code of Jewish Law and maintaining Jewish continuity throughout the ages. Maimonides was born in 1135 in Cordoba, Spain to his mother and father, Rabbi Maimon, and would go on to study medicine and philosophy in unison with his religious studies. From a young age, Maimonides father mentored him in the teachings of the Talmud, Torah, Jewish philosophy and secular sciences. His education in these areas would eventually fuel his writings. In 1148, when Maimonides was just 13, a Sunni Muslim Caliphate movement called the Almohades invaded Southern Spain, and he and his family were forced to flee their hometown. The Almohades invasion marked the end of the Golden Age of Jewish culture in Spain, where although Jews were not fist class citizens, they lived free of persecution and were able to conduct businesses and lead relatively peaceful lives. The Almohades invasion put great pressure on its Jewish inhabitants, posing a serious threat to Jewish continuity. Many religious institutions dissolved, including synagogues and yeshivas, and Sharia Law now dictated everyday life for Christians and Jews of Spain. Non Muslims were given the choice to convert to Islam or die or else go ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Criticism Of Advertising In Advertising I have found most product advertising to be ridiculous and somewhat laughable. Those in advertisement have jobs that require them to sell us products and they walk a fine line to entice us to buy. Sales are the key to success and growth in any organization but should it be at the consumer s cost? The claims in the advertisements are what sells the product in the end, but many of them leave out important information and provide us with hyped and over exaggerated claims. Advertising typically hits a pain spot which pushes people to buy on impulse because they need it and want a solution to that pain. See, they do their research and know just what to say to make us feel better, want more, and make our lives much happier. The promises are never ending like the 30 day money back guarantee that is truly a paradox. After we see these products in advertisement we assume that we can make good use of them, but how many of these as seen on TV products do you use regularly? Most products do not measure up to the claims of their advertisements. Let s take any restaurant or fast food chain s advertising and compare it to what you actually get once you receive your order. My sandwiches at Subway never looks like what is shown on the television commercial. Instead of receiving a scrumptious sandwich piled high with meat and vegetables it is more like having to open the bread to even find meat and vegetables. I think this is your classic bait and switch tactic. Advertising ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Compare the Central Characters in ‘Medusa’ and ‘My Last... Compare the central characters in Medusa and My Last Duchess Carol Ann Duffy s Medusa and Robert Browning s My Last Duchess are two entirely different poems in many respects. Written in entirely different eras, some would say that they are as opposite as poetry could be. However, their central characters have some remarkable similarities that strike a chord with the reader and represent a common theme. In each of the poems, both Medusa and the Duke of Ferrara represent the fickleness of power and how it fluctuates in daily life. Duffy s manipulation of a paradox within Medusa displays the extent to which power plays a part in the Greek myth of Medusa. The extended metaphor of Medusa with filthy snakes that hissed and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He calls the painting of her a wonder and does not elaborate upon this, suggesting that while he was fond of his wife, their love was quite subdued. This allows him to remain calm and present a dignified front. However, as the poem continues, he becomes more obsessive over her and speaks quite aggressively of what he deems to be promiscuous behaviour. The bough of cherries some officious fool broke in the orchard for her seems to be a major part of his outrage, as he is offended that she ranked my gift of a nine hundred years old name with anybody s gift . By telling his companion of this in a conversation that merely started with mention of a painting, the Duke reveals that he is very much not in control of himself. These constant tests of his patience which seem very much unintentional on the Duchess part seem to weigh heavily on the Duke s mind as he says here you miss, or there exceed the mark showing heavy criticism on the Duchess. He wanted her to let herself be lessoned so , which shows the extent to which her behaviour troubles him. It also creates the air of superiority in that he sees himself as a sort of teacher, and her as the student. The loss of control comes where all smiles stopped together , suggesting a macabre end to the story. Both Medusa and the Duke seem to cause destruction and chaos around them as a direct result of being emotionally impacted by those they love. This weakness ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Philanthropy Is Worthwhile Coming into this course, I had always thought of philanthropy as wealthy individuals giving out their funds to nonprofits that caught their interest. I certainly didn t realize the great amount of effort and time that is necessary to make philanthropy effective and worthwhile. Achieving lasting and positive change isn t as easy as having the money to do it, you also need to be willing to think up possible solutions and adjust when they re not working. Being a true philanthropist can end up being a full time job as Bill and Melinda Gates discovered. I had never really thought of philanthropy as a frustrating and difficult task as it seems so simple in theory but now realise that more often than not it is the complete opposite. I also was unfamiliar with the concept of philanthrocapitalism. I am now somewhat unsettled by how much power the wealthy have on which issues get attention but at the same time hold the belief that it s bound to help more than it hurts. I also was unaware of how much the NGO sector has increased in recent years. This was largely due to a general frustration with the way problems were being dealt with. This led people to crave some new innovation and made them more likely to support the social entrepreneurs who were creating organizations to fix these problems in new ways. Increased freedom from authoritarian governments in many different countries has also helped increase the sector as as a growing surplus of wealth. I think it is extremely exciting to ... I had tried so hard not to go, the journey was hard but worth it. My Mother and Father were the ones that helped me get to where I am. My father packed all my of my belongings for the journey to the dreamland. The plan was to leave in the morning, little did we know there was so much we could not pack for, this was also a mental trip. In the morning we packed all of my belongings into our automatic carriage, the journey is set to take off. We leave for our trip and we will leave as a pair but only one of us will return to the homeland. My father says that it will be a couple of hours before we reach a place for some food so it is crucial for us to have full stomachs as we leave but we do not. So we have to stop as soon as we can for some food. Off to the side of the road we see a maiden selling some fruit that could quench not only our empty stomach but it will give us some important nutrients that actually make our taste buds blossom unlike the bland water that we packed for our long journey. We stop and the fair maiden says that her fruit is the best of the land, My father and I are very skeptical of this, because the fruit looked dry, weathered and not very appetizing. On 10th Avenue and 26th Street, in the West side of Manhattan, marks Death Avenue. Hundreds of New Yorkers lost their lives on this street due to the railroads. In 1929, the city finally agreed to elevate the railroad and initiate construction of the game changing High Line. In the book, Public Art on the High Line, it states, From 1934 to 1960, it had been considered a game changer, substantially improving the efficiency and safely of getting goods into and out of the city (Alemani, Page 19). I think lifting the railway was ingenious, because this ultimately eliminates the death rate of train related accidents. Although, the rise of interstate highways and commercials airlines decreased the need for the High Line. Meat and good were not transported from the High Line anymore, but now from trucks. In the Journal Article on the Transformation of Abandoned Railroad Structures in American Cities, it states, Then, with the introduction of the commercial airline and interstate highway system, the airplane began replacing the railroad as the standard for passenger service and the trucking industry began completing for the freight service (Lau, Page 42). Therefore, the viaduct was sold from the New York Central Railroad to the Penn Central Railroad. Then after was acquired by the federal government system due to numerous failing railways. In the 1960s, the south portion of the structure There was some contradiction referring to the demolition of the High Line. Mayor Michael Bloomberg was an activist for the preservation of public parks. His leadership was a bonus for the High Line. The city created large funding committees that ultimately made the costly project possible. The only opposition of the High Line was from The Chelsea Property Owners. The property owners wanted to build apartment buildings in place of the rail line. The rail way was viewed as an impediment to the production, because it was in the way of potential profit. The place had once belonged to Errol Flynn. My daughter was playing on the edge of the sea. James had been Neville Cardus s deputy as the Manchester Guardian s cricket correspondent in the 1930s. I found myself reading about my father s heroes in the Lancashire cricket team of that period as if it was today s sports news. I had been devouring everything I could by James since I came to Jamaica to help establish a new graduate school for social science research. I knew that he had lived in Lancashire when he left Trinidad for Britain. It occurred to me that we had lived in the same places, the Caribbean, Britain, America, Africa in a different sequence, at different times and with very different trajectories. Now, watching my daughter play on that exotic beach, with my father s stories from childhood coming alive again, the gap between this old black man and myself was collapsed into a single moment by the compelling immediacy of James s prose. Generation and racial differences were erased in an epiphany of timeless connection. I felt compelled to meet him and so I wrote the first and only fan letter of my life. Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman Essay Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman In the book Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman, the central thesis that he tries to point out is that emotional intelligence may be more important than I.Q. in determining a person s well being and success in life. At first I didn t know what Goleman was talking about when he said emotional intelligence, but after reading the book I have to say that I agree completely with Goleman. One reason for my acceptance of Goleman s theory is that academic intelligence has little to do with emotional life. To me, emotions can be just as intelligent as your I.Q. In this essay I hope to provide sufficient evidence to show why I agree with Goleman s thesis on emotional intelligence. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Goleman states, Emotional aptitude is a meta ability, determining how well we can use whatever other skills we have, including raw intellect. People that have high emotional intelligence are more likely to be satisfied and effective in their lives. Others who have trouble with this cannot manage themselves so their ability for successful work and clear thought are altered. In contrast to this, you can say that I.Q. is better than emotional intelligence. Having a high I.Q. does offer a lot of benefits. Goleman states that people with a high I.Q. are ambitious, productive, and uneasy with sexual and sensual experience. That high I.Q. people are the caricature of the intellectual, adept in the realm of mind but inept in the personal world. And all of this is just for the men. Goleman states, The profiles differ slightly for men and women. High I.Q. women have intellectual confidence, are fluent in expressing their thoughts and have a wide range of intellectual and aesthetic interests. Goleman also does point out that these are extremes and that everyone mixes I.Q. and emotional intelligence in varying degrees. But this does give us an instructive look at what each of these dimensions adds to a person s qualities. In the book, Emotional Intelligence, Goleman talks about two psychologists (Sternberg and Salovey) who have taken a wider view on intelligence and give terms of what they think it takes to lead a successful life. We estimated we could influence redemption behavior at Rite Aid by running promotions (e.g., 1000 points are worth $12). So by spending $2 $6M we could influence $10 $30 of redemptions at Rite Aid. As we discussed with Rite Aid, their concern was more around losing margin on sales associated with point redemption. At 30% margin it implied risk of $3 10M risk each year Result We combined the information and agreed with Rite Aid to reimburse them for margin shortfall if points redeemed in stores was less than points redeemed outside their stores and also proposed annual cap of $3M $9M, with claw backs if are able to outperform in subsequent years. The structure helped address Rite Aid s concern and at same time limited our risk to $2 6MM each year which was significantly lower than the revenue ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Stump-Watchers In Han Feiizi s Han Feizi does not like the way of the former kings, he thinks that it is an old thing to do. Han Feizi also says, Those who think they can take the ways of the ancient kings and use them to govern the people of today all belong in the category of stump watchers (Pg. 98)! This category that he is putting them in, I think is almost like the lowest of the low. Stump watchers are people who think something that happened one time will happen repeatedly. He just wants to put a modern way of thinking on the old. The way that he is going about it though I think is completely wrong because it is hard to uproot people s lives, and tell them that they are all wrong. Instead, he could just have tried to bend the rules and modernize them. We see ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Doubt would come in the form of showing ambition to gain the throne. I think this is apparent when Han Feizi says, The beast called the dragon can be tamed and trained to the point where you may ride on its back. But on the underside of his throat, it has scaled a foot in diameter that curls back from the body, and anyone who chances to brush against them is sure to die (Pg. 79). I think this quote is talking about ambition and how it can get you killed if you do not follow the law. The law must be clear so that subordinates do not try to become the king. Becoming the king in the sense that they are not following the rituals assigned to them and they are following the rituals of the king. To finish off the quote and how it is relevant to this chapter Han Feizi say, The ruler of men too has as his bristling scales. Only if a speaker can avoid brushing against them will he have any hope for success (Pg. 78). This is saying for someone to come into office or ministry that they should not butt heads with the king. They should abide by the laws and then not go outside of them. For when they go outside of the laws then they will be punished for the laws are only beneficial for the king. • 18. Economic Chaos And Confusion Following The American... The combination of economic chaos and confusion following the American Revolution with the virtually nonexistent economic powers of the federal government under the Articles of Confederation put US in a very poor economic position upon the arrival of the Constitution (American Pageant 161). This, however, changed under the Constitution and thus during the administration of Washington as the federal government could now have a large say in the economics of America. After being put into office, Washington established a cabinet and assigned Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers, to be the Secretary of Treasury. Knowing that debt and the growing interest rates were a very large domestic problem, Hamilton set out to create a plan for a strong economy. He first implemented tariffs, which are taxes on foreign goods coming into the country, into his plan, hoping that it would stimulate manufacturing within the country (Chernow 163). Although this did succeed in stimulating industry within America, it also angered many Americans in the south and west because they did not manufacture many goods, but were rather mainly consumers and merchants who were those being taxed the most (Chernow 153). Another component of Hamilton s plan for economic aid was the federal assumption of state debt, which caused many mixed sentiments between the states. On one hand, the states that owed a large sum of money were very happy as they did not need to pay the debt anymore, at least to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Pre Colonial Maori Society Pre colonial Maori society was based on kinship groups; hapū, iwi and whanau. These groups are connected to common ancestors and the land and these ties are still integral to maori communities today. (Byers, 2002) As colonization took place, the Treaty of Waitangi; New Zealand s founding document sought to guarantee the protection of Maori culture and customs but this didn t result in recognition for the value based system of social control which Maori had in place. (Vieille, 2010) Within the zeitgeist of post war society where rates of urbanisation soared, Maori people comprised 80% of the rural population and over the next forty years, the Maori rural population decreased as many became a part of the urban population. (Durie, 2007) This demographic revolution occurred due to the government s acquisition of land, resulting in great changes with many Maori being disconnected from their traditional ways of life. (Durie, 2007) As these shifts continued, support networks of the whanau or extended families which were once source of strength of maori communities slowly disappeared and maori were become more often at the receiving end of hostile behaviour. (Durie, 2007) Mana in this new urban society was measured differently and it was regarded more in terms of material possessions in comparison with the society they were used to which recognized mana as a sacred spiritual element within individual dignity. • 20. Causes and Consequences of Operation Barbarossa Essay Causes and Consequences of Operation Barbarossa On June 22nd 1941, German forces crossed the Russian frontier and began to fight their way into Soviet territory. Operation Barbarossa, Hitler s codename for the attack on Russia, had begun. In this essay I am going to describe the causes, events and consequences of Operation Barbarossa. What happened when the unbeatable Hitler and Germany met the sheer determination and patriotism of Stalin and the USSR? There were many reasons that contributed to Hitler s invasion of the USSR. Hitler had always harboured a hatred for the Slavs, he thought they were inferior, impure people who were only fit to be used as slaves. This was a racist attitude ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They had signed the Anti Comintern Pact in 1936 with Japan, a treaty that specifically opposed communism, and therefore Stalin s Russia. This showed Hitler was clearly opposed to Stalin and his principles, which is why entire world was shocked when news of the Nazi Soviet Pact reached them. In 1939 Hitler and Stalin signed an agreement that meant they formed a temporary alliance. This non aggression pact could not last; the leaders simply aimed to protect themselves from attack. Hitler and Stalin were complete political opposites; at one end of the scale was Communism, and at the other end was Fascism. Hitler and Stalin represented the two political extremes. It was obvious to the world that this treaty of peace would not last for long. Western Europe had been safely conquered, except for Britain, which was so weak it would not be able to attack for several years. As Germany was still at war with Britain when Operation Barbarossa was beginning, it seemed to Hitler that if the Soviet Union could be defeated it would make the British more willing to accept peace terms. The Nazi reputation would have received a huge boost people would become even more fearful of their power. Sure enough, on December 18th 1940, Hitler signed Directive 21, also known as Operation ... • 21. Research Paper On Tumbl I started using a Tumblr for my Social Media class. When I first started using Tumblr, I could tell that it was a much different platform than Facebook. The things I would post would just not go over well with my family and friends who would just believe what they would see on television. I ve had bad experiences on Facebook for posting just about everything, but that was a while back. They took quite an offense to some of the things I would post about that are going on in not only America but on a global level. Let s begin with my experiences and expectations with Tumblr first. Since opening up my Tumblr account, I decided to be more enigmatic and in the dark. I would post some simple blogs each week on the Comm2311 blog, but no one really replied to them even after I commented and clicked like on their blogs. I really didn t have any expectations, and I was still enjoying being part of a new social network. When on a new type of social media, the first thing I like to do is test the waters in a sense. I like to see how people use it and how everyone is reacting before I start posting lots of information. After some consideration, I wondered what would happen if I breached social media etiquette and started sharing random YouTube videos and off topic posts on our Comm2311 blog. The first time I broke social media etiquette on Tumblr was when I posted a random YouTube video and captioned it Feminism is a Prison without any context on my class Comm2311 blog. I ... Alabama Short Stories In Alabama, in the country, next to a dirt road and a muddy lake that was full of green water, where you couldn t go to sleep because the frogs croaked too loud, there was a large house. The large house was made of splintery wood, and was inhabited by only one person. Now, the lake that his house was built on had been where a boy named Ronald Pratt had been ran over after removing the bricks from in front of the wheels of a flaming portable, saving the lives of many kids after the portable rolled into the lake and the fire was extinguished. One day, the man who owned the house was in his bed at 8:30 pm and he heard a whisper. He couldn t make out any words, but he heard it all right. They decided to question the man living in the house. He claimed that there was a ghost in the lake, and that the officer must have been killed by it! The detectives found this preposterous, and dismissed the man as crazy. At 11:00, the detectives were still there. They heard the whispering. Maybe the man was right! They thought. Maybe there WAS a ghost. They left with a report saying that he drowned, but they didn t know why. In the end, the man moved away from his old house by the lake. The county renamed the lake from Lake Fletcher to The Haunted Lake. Over the years, three foolish men waded into the lake. All died in the shallow water. The county put signs up saying NO SWIMMING. In the form of parables, fables, and fairy tales with human and animal characters, the stories aimed to help children and adult discern right actions from wrong. To this day, parents continue to use these stories to convey ethical teachings. As a reflection of my past and appreciation of my present as well as my positive outlook of the future, in this paper, I ponder about the stories my parents imparted to me while at the same time, I express my appreciation by telling a story to my children that I hope they would carry with them in their old age. The wolf ate all the sheep and ran into the forest and Kenny was left without a flock. The story of the boy who cried wolf has taught me the importance of honesty. From childhood to adulthood, in both my personal and professional lives, I have practiced honesty because a lie, more so, repetitive lies can cause you to lose the trust of people around you. • 25. Saving Lives in Traveling through the Dark by William... Saving Lives The most wonderful thing in the world is being able to save the life of another. Some people have this chance and some people do not. The people that have not had the chance might have never been in a situation to save a person s or thing s life. Some people might have been in a situation to have saved someone or something and not chosen to act on it. The situation can be unnoticeable and you would have to think about it and observe the details. The poem Traveling through the Dark by William Stafford is about making the right decisions and saving lives. In this poem, the speaker will tell us the story of how he made the correct decision and saved the life of many people. Traveling through the dark I found a deer ... My fingers touching her side brought me the reason her side was warm; her fawn lay there waiting, alive, never to be born. Beside that mountain road I hesitated (Stafford 8 12). Once the speaker touched the belly of the doe he realized that she was pregnant. The side of the doe was still warm so that meant her fawn was still alive. The speaker then had to think about throwing the doe into the river, because he did not want to kill her fawn. I thought hard for us all my only swerving , then pushed her over the edge into the river (Strafford 17 18). Likewise Zimbardo s (1971) experiment, studying the way prisoners and guards interacted, demonstrated similar ethical failings, such as consent gained without individuals being made fully aware of the involvements; physical, emotional and psychological harm subjected; violation of rights, including privacy, respect, confidentiality and the ability to withdraw (). Fascinated by the volume of ordinary individuals who executed terrible things to others during WWII, Zimbardo predicted that all people, even the good, had the potential to conduct malevolence when sited in the correct environment (Haney et al, 1973). In a mock prison participants were recruited to play a role, half as prisoners and the rest as guards. Both were dressed accordingly, with the guards wearing a uniform with mirrored sunglasses which promotes anonymity as their emotions are obscured, but yet denotes their position of power and authority. According to Zimbardo (2000) these conditions of deindividuation allow for the facilitation of evil. Subsequently it becomes acceptable to enforce measures which degrade prisoners of their self respect, including being stripped, deloused and ordered to carry a chain around their ankle, whilst the mandatory wearing of a smock and a cap made from a stocking demoralized them as it impacted upon their masculinity.
