How Did William Penn Impact Society
William Penn, an English entrepreneur, had an unforeseen impact on the history of the United
States of America. Penn had been already a champion for democracy, religious freedom, and anti
slavery movements. Through his good relations with both the common people of England and the
Indians of Pennsylvania, Penn was able to secure an entire state for many years to come. So that
people could escape persecution for their religious beliefs, have more freedom, and have a good
relationship with the Indians.
Penn was born on October 14, 1644 at Tower Hill, London, the first of three children of English
Admiral Sir William Penn, and Margaret Jasper. Penn had two wives, Hannah Callowhill Penn
(1696 1718), Gulielma Maria Springett (1672 1694), he had twelve children in total. In 1660
1662, Penn enrolled in the University of Oxford, where he rejected Anglicanism and was
expelled. In 1665, Charles II passed the Conventicle Act, this forbidden gatherings for worship
of more than five people, apart from serving the Anglican Church. If you didn t follow it you
would be arrested, trailed, and will be guilty, with the punishment of death. In 1665 1666, there
was the Great Plague of London it was the last major outbreak of bubonic plague in Britain,
killing nearly a quarter of London s population. In 1666, Penn was sent to Ireland by his father to
manage the family estates. In 1670 Penn was arrested, and put in jail for preaching after the
recently Conventicle Act was passed. In 1689 the the

What can the examination of religious texts tell us about...
Religious text Definition writing that is venerated for the worship of a deity (Soanes, 2005).
During the early nineteenth century it was the writer Max Muller that said for the study of
religion the religious text should be a scholar s primary source and focus of their studies. But is
this correct? If religious texts are the only evidence that scholars use to study religioncan an
accurate picture and understanding of religion be gained? But is Max Muller Correct in his
assumption? As a result of this way of thinking many scholars of the twentieth century have tended
to study the religious texts of a religion as a primary source for their information.
Along with Max Muller, The French philosopher Jaques Derrida also gives a ... Show more content

Religious texts either have a narrative or expository character. There is a great variety of
religious and semi religious text for example hymns, prayers, chants, myths, and stories about
gods heroes epics sacred laws and they all vary in authority and degree of sacredness. Within a
religion the texts are usually collected into standard works of faith or canons and they are
determined by general agreement or official religious bodies at which point they are fixed and are
then regarded as the authority of that religion.
Ninian Smart covers the study of religious texts within his model, the seven dimensions of
religion for the study of religion. The particular dimension that can be specially linked to the
study of religious texts would be the narrative or mythic dimension, which Smart defines as the
story side of religion. Smart also makes the point that the handing down of stories whether they
are historical mysterious future telling or heroic is typical of all religions or faiths. These stories
often called myths. The term may be a bit misleading, for in the modern study of religion there is
no implication that a myth is false. (Smart, 1998) The stories that religious texts are based on are
usually based on history or not as the case may be. The stories concerning creation are obviously
before history and are usually concerning the subject of how death and suffering came into being.

Pilgrims Coming To America
Plymouth Reflection The history of the Pilgrims coming to the United States of America is
something that we have learned about since first grade. Each year throughout our education we get
into more depth about the events that took place and what actually happened. Both of the two
passages explains in their different ways about the Pilgrims journey and their life in the new
world. Some of the hardships that the Pilgrims faced while living in the new world was illness and
trying to create a new community on the unknown land. The new settlers stayed on the Mayflower
for a few months but finally moved onto land permanently. Once the first winter came along many
became ill and some even died. A disease swept through the colony. But not long after,

Teen Pregnancy Rates Paper
This week s assignment had me take a closer look on how environment truly influences teen
pregnancy rates in my community. Teens living in poverty have a greater likelihood of becoming
pregnant than teens living in affluent communities. What causes this disparity? Social and
environmental factors are in large part responsible for the disparity. The adults in lower income
families are often less educated, have a criminal history, hold low income jobs, or are unemployed.
Lower income communities are plagued by gun violence, gang inhabitance, and the availability of
drugs. Teens that become pregnant at an early age, have parents that themselves were pregnant as
teens ( Teen PregnancyFacts, Teen Pregnancy Statistics Teen Pregnancy Environmental... Show

According to the CDC, Teen pregnancy rates are highest within the Hispanic and African American
demographic ( Social Determinants and Teen Pregnancy / Teen Pregnancy / Reproductive Health
/ CDC, 2015). This trend can be linked to neighborhood income inequality and lower educational
opportunity for these demographics ( Social Determinants and Teen Pregnancy / Teen Pregnancy
/ Reproductive Health / CDC, 2015). In my Voicethread post I addressed the idea of generational
poverty for many families in urban communities across the country. Adolescents and teens that have
grandparents and parents that live in poverty are more likely to experience poverty in their adult
lives. Low income families rely on multiple forms of government aid, including food stamps, rent
assistance, and other governmental subsidies to decrease their financial burden each month. Cyclic
poverty is among the most difficult patterns to overcome. Decreased economic prospects for young
girls in urban environments steer them towards teen parenting (Kempner, 2013). Watching their
parents get by is enough motivation for vulnerable young women to take the plunge into
parenthood. However, parents that seek education and personal betterment often seek safer
environments in which to raise their children, breaking the cycle of poverty for their families. The
educational push by the adults in their lives should be there for teens,

Dinosaurs And Birds Essay
Dinosaurs and Birds
Are birds really dinosaurs or are they simply related? That is a question that has gained new life
in recent years due to the overwhelming facts the are pouring in from newly found fossils and
studies from fossils that have been found in the past. Two groups have formed in the study of this
question: those who believe birds are a direct result of dinosaurs and those who feel dinosaurs and
birds must have had a common ancestor. Determining which view is correct is a matter of opinion
based on fact. The main problem involves the use of cladistics or phylogenetic systematics to group
organisms according to characteristics they share. When one looks at dinosaur fossils, he or she
may feel that certain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, support is gaining that Archaeopteryx was not in fact the first bird, but instead a descendent
of an earlier bird ancestor that had developed along a different pathway and actually represents an
evolutionary dead end.
Two opponents of the birds are dinosaurs theory are Alan Feduccia of the University of North
Carolina and Larry Martin of the University of Kansas. They believe that birds evolved from
some unknown reptile from a time before dinosaurs came to be. One point they make is that flight
must have begun from tree climbing or an arboreal ancestor but that all the proposed dinosaurian
ancestors were ground dwellers or cursorial On the other side, supporters for the birds are
dinosaurs theory feel there is an unknown dinosaur bird that was arboreal, or simply that birds
evolved flight from the ground by chasing after insects.
In recent years other fossil finds have stirred the argument even more. One of these is the fossil
named Sinosauroptyrex found in China. It appears to be an important link between birds and
dinosaurs. Sinosauropteryx appears to be a feathered dinosaur having a mane of feathers along its
neck, back, and tail a feature until then seen only in birds. Sinosauroptyrex appears before
Archaeopteryx and gives a substantial link between the theropods and birds. One opponent of this

Historical Reflection Of The Film Invictus

Invictus
The two segregated fences that separated South Africa were broken down by former South
African President Nelson Mandela, who used South Africa s Springboks rugby team as a tool to
unite the economically and racially divided country that was suffering by the Apartheid that lasted
about 50 years. Yet Nelson Mandela made it his goal to conquer the white supremacy and racial
segregation of his beloved country. Mandela s long journey and dedication for South Africawas
duplicated by Director Clint Eastwood s Oscar nominated film, Invictus. In novel Invictus by
John Carlin he makes Nelson s Mandela s accomplishment of ending the apartheid more strategic
and political unlike the film but kept to Mandela s character. Clint Eastwood showed Mandela as
powerful, yet approachable and humble leader who strategically used the popular universal
language of sports to unite post apartheid South Africa. Director Eastwood balanced the historical
significance of South Africa s struggles of the time and was yet able to make the film into a classic
hollywood sports drama.
When Nelson Mandela was elected as South Africa s president he did not take any breaks, his
mission and dedication showed in all his actions to remove hate and racial inequality from his
country. During Mandela s first few days of his term he noticed that the cabinet members of the
Apartheid were quickly leaving as the new cabinet members stepped in and he saw this as an
opportunity to remove racial segregation in the workplace. Mandela respectfully asked the
Afrikaner members to join his committee to try and give equality throughout post apartheid South
Africa. Many South African s were shocked by Mandela s forgiveness, even the black Africans of
his own cabinet, who have to work alongside the same Afrikaners who singlehandedly made the
Apartheid. Clint Eastwood included this event in the film because it spotlighted on Mandela s
efforts and his commitment to promote progress in South Africa.
The moment of Mandela s direct leader abilities was captured in the film and novel when he fights
the new Rugby Sport and Clint Eastwood added how separated black and white

Increased Patient Responsibility
We like to think of medicine as a vast sea of knowledge, a science of certainty and applied research
intended to heal and cure. Patients visit their doctors expecting to be diagnosed, prescribed, and
treated. For several patients, this optimistic outlook is in fact the order of things. But, for many
others, medicineis an experimental endeavor and very human in nature. Atul Gawande, in his
collection of essays entitled Complications: A Surgeon s Notes on an Imperfect Science, sheds
light on this view of medicine as a field of possibilities and dead ends, improvements and failures.
In spite of the many changes brought forth by medicine, the evolution of the patient and doctor
relationship into one that redefines the role of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This once popular perception of medicine is in a sense antiquated. Still, by admitting that there
exists a discrepancy between the past and present views of the patient doctor dynamic, the
expanding role of the patient can be recognized. The riskiness and unpredictability of medical
care have made physicians more anxious in terms of the treatments they recommend to their
patients, such that the patients are now the ultimate authority with respect to their health.
Doctors today are taking a more liberal approach to medicine. This development has indirectly
provided patients with the freedom to explore their own personal medical goals. Gawande
describes the case of a twenty one year old woman who was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in
one of her breasts. Her surgeon, who normally advised his patients with breast cancer to undergo
a mastectomy, felt forced to reconsider this operation, as he was hesitant about removing the
breast of a woman so young. He instead discussed with her other possible treatment options,
explaining their benefits and risks (211). The patient, provided with the proper information and
resources, was given the opportunity to define her own well being. It was a decision that she
would have to live with for the rest of her life, and so only she had the right to make that decision.
Such issues have modified the patient experience by

These bases are pretty lengthy to take out, so if you approach one, you want to be prepared before

Informative Essay On 2pac
Imagine, walking down the streets of Las Vegas, enjoying your evening with your significant

rappers of all time has been murdered. Contrary to popular conspiracy theories, Tupac is not
living in Cuba, but was a victim of gang violence. Lesane Parish Crook otherwise known as
Tupac or 2Pac was born on June 16th, 1971. Lesane s mother, Afeni Shakur, was a Black Panther
activist. Still to this day, Tupac s albums including All Eyes On Me are still popular today. Tupac

revenge. A few hours after the fight, Anderson and a few gang members were driving around the
Vegas Strip in a white Cadillac. While driving, Anderson spotted Tupac in the passenger seat of
Suge s BMW. Anderson saw an opportunity to collect the bounty, so he shot Tupac from the back
seat of the Cadillac. Anonymous sources were confirmed more than a decade later by the
eyewitness account of Anderson s uncle, Southside Crip boss Duane Keffe D Davis, who says he
was in the car and handed Anderson the murder weapon. After the shooting, police informants
stated that Suge s gang told everyone that Tupac was killed by Anderson. Biggie Smalls put a
bounty on Suge Knight and Tupac Shakur s head, and after Tupac fought Anderson after the Mike

121,678 people, 100,791 of them await kidney transplants?

This part of the system works well, the more severe a patient s disease the more likely they will

where they will die without a transplant soon.
There just aren t enough organs to go around from the donor list.
The problem with the current system of the United States transplant service is simple.
There just isn t enough people willing to donate their kidney and not be given anything in return for

According to the Organ Donation and Transplantation Statistics, every month there are more than

Nevertheless, it could be even harder to survive online than in shopping malls.
When it came to 2013 revenue, Abercrombie Fitch faced a 9% year over year drop, while
Aeropostale fell 12%. Abercrombie Fitch saw its net income fall 58%, while Aeropostale had a
net loss difference of $69,629,000 from the same quarter of both fiscal years 2012 to 2013. In
2014, retailers seem to have unexpected deliveries within their products. This year, A F had good
profit after several quarters without doing so. Its shares have gained 25%, however, this huge gain
did not come from improving industry trends. Such increment happened after improving sales plus
the announcement that it would introduce lower price points to compete with low cost teen apparel
retailers efficiently, such as H M, Forever 21, and UNIQLO.
Even though it has experienced hard competition with other companies that sell low cost teen

decrease and thereby eliminate its dignity on the eyes of its customers. It s not a surprise because
customers assign more quality to expensive products. This has affected its unit volumes as well as

Reasons Why College Athletes Should Be Paid
I believe that college athletes should be paid for many reasons. One reason why they should get
paid is because they put themselves on the line. They also put on an incredible show for the
people so that means more money. The third explanation why these athletes should be paid is
because they would help begin a sense of financial awareness. Another statement of why they
should get paid is because this is the main way that colleges get money. The last and final
explanation on why these athletes should get paid is because they work harder than regular
students. All these reasons are why they should get paid. First of all, many of the athletes put
themselves on the line and they put an incredible show for the people so that means more money. A
collegeathlete may get a scholarship to go to a college to be able to play sports, but what would
happen if they get hurt or cuty from a team. They might lose their dream of becoming something
big in life or they might not accomplish a dream they wanted to be successful in. These athlete s
career can end any second and they do it for the people. According to Marc Edelman he states that
Not only do they miss class, but they are absent for nationally televised games that make a lot of
money and receive millions of viewers . These means that these athletes are missing their school
time to make an entertaining event for millions of viewers. These athletes are the main cause of

Women= Objects in Ads
What does a naked woman have to do in a men s cologne advertisement? Well the adver tisement
companies think that sex sells. When women is objectified, they are being degraded of their
character as a human. These days young women especially, they are being objectified to sell
goods and services using their looks and not their knowledge. In the article Objectification of
Women in Entertainment Media by Jon Barber, explains how the objectification of women in
society is a trend that is developing in the entertainment of media today. Barber points out it is
specifically in movies, music videos, music, television, and in the advertisement industries there
is strong focus on women as sexual objects rather than women. What Barber is saying it is true;
an example of this is one of the Tom Ford Ad (see image below). What is a men s fragrance
cologne doing in between a woman s breasts? Barber goes on to say that the media is creating
social stereotypes for both men and women that can result in un healthy social and physical habits
which is catastrophic to society. (Barber par 1) This is unfor tunate; there is no escape from these
Ads, because the average of advertisements being watched by a woman is about 400 to 600 per
day. (Qtd. In Effects on Women)
Why is advertisement that amplifies objectification of women bad? A report by the American

Stalin s Impact On Russia
Stalinist Policies Set to Bring About Fruitful Changes Targeted at the Russian Society
By: Hashem Qaituqa
Under Stalin s regime, Russia is witnessing an era of rapid industrialization, and introduction of
social policies that will have a huge impact on Russian society. It is Stalin s view towards the west
that caused Russia to embark on the industrialization of the economy and military. Stalin fears that
if Russia remained agricultural, western interference might threaten it s stability in the future.
Furthermore, social policies such as compulsory education, improvements in health, and gender
equality were put and designed for the better of the nation, and to boost the morale of the people.
Stalin s View towards Western Nations
Western nations industrialized and their economies flourished. According to Stalin, if Russia did
not catch up with the race for industrialization, it will develop to become a weak country, and any

True or False: The electron in the receiving antenna oscillates at a lower frequency than the electron
in the transmitting antenna because of the distance between the two antennas.
False: when the transmitting antenna s electron oscillates, it sets up on an electromagnetic wave
that oscillates at the same frequency. This wave causes the electron in the receiver to oscillate at
the same frequency. Electrons, therefore, in both the transmitter and receiver (antennas) oscillate at
identical frequencies.
True or False: If the frequency of oscillation increases but the amplitude of the electron oscillation
remains the same, then the electron in the transmitting antenna is experiencing larger accelerations
(recall what you know about acceleration and motion).
True: electrons must move faster as they oscillate back and forth in order for the frequency to
increase while the amplitude remains the same. Delta velocity / time is a measure of the average
acceleration. A larger change in velocity than at the old frequency if the electron is ovine faster
towards its peak height than away from its peak height at the new frequency. Moreover, the time
for this change is velocity to be seen is less than for the old frequency. These changes indicate
acceleration is larger.
True or False: If the amplitude increases but frequency remains the same, the electron at the
receiving antenna experiences larger peak forces but oscillates at the same frequency as before.

easily defined. Faith, when talking about it in the religious sense, makes it even that much harder
to understand. Everyone believes in something, and each of those beliefs have an enormous effect
on how they live their lives. Gerald O Collins, a Jesuit Priest, states that within the Christian faith,
lies two components: Fides Quae and Fides Qua. Fides Quae is the faith which is believed, or the
content of that faith. Fides Qua is the individuals own personal commitment to God. Throughout
this paper I will demonstrate faith using The Compendium, and A New World of Faith to show how
a good understanding of faith can reveal the truth from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This statement simplified would essentially mean that in order to have faith you must be able to
trust in God, even though we

cannot physically be in his presence on Earth. To elaborate, a faithful follower of christ must first
have knowledge of the religion, agree to the terms, and then trust in that faith. Faith requires an
individual to not only trust in God himself, but to also firmly believe the scriptures and teachings
from within the Bible as well. Both this knowledge and trust is very crucial to the understanding
and involvement with the Catholic faith. So many people simply agree with the teachings of
the Bible, but do not fully trust in its meaning. For example, every Catholic understands that
Jesus was nailed to the cross and died for our salvation, but they don t believe that in the harder
times in life, that Jesus will come through on this promise for us. Being humble and opening
oneself up to this idea of a loving faith relationship with God is what truly defines the term above
all else. A good example of this concept from scripture would be from (John 3:16) For God so
loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish
but have eternal life. This type of knowledge trust relationship we have with God is a type of
rational faith, or fides et ratio. We must have strongly backed reasoning for what we

Civic-Sclerosis Essay
That citizen sinks further into apathy, anonymity, and depersonalization. The result is that he
comes to depend on public authority and a state of civic sclerosis sets in (Alinsky, 1971). This
statement perfectly describes what is happening to the people today. People are no longer
concerned with what is happening around them. The world today is living in an individualization
phase where there are more people who know more stuff about the celebrities, latest fashion and
gadgets, rich lifestyle, etc. rather than the continuous welfare problems. Because the world has
reached the technology era, people are blind and deaf to the oppression that is happening. In this

After dropping out from graduate school, he spent his life in community organizing. He was an
organizer in the Congress of Industrial Organizations and more active in the Back of the Yards

American ghettos in the same state. Also, he did not just focus in Chicago but travelled further in
California, Michigan, New York, etc. Because of his passion in helping the oppressed people in the

A radical is somewhat negative to be used as a community organizer. It is like community
organizer is peace while radical is disorder. However, as I was reading the book, I realized that a
community organizer should be a radical. In the situation today, we just don t need a person who

Sonnet 18 By William Shakespeare
SONNET 18 BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
William Shakespeare wrote Sonnet 18 as part of a sequence of 154 sonnets. Also known as Shall
I Compare Thee? Sonnet 18 has become one of his most well loved poems. Shakespeare includes
symbols of time, decay and eternity within this work. The speaker explicates his unending love for
his beloved and how it will live on after death. The first quatrain introduces the personification of
summer.
The speaker begins the sonnet by asking if he can compare his friend to a warm, summer day. A
brief statement stating how lovely and temperate thee is follows this rhetorical question. Rough
winds do shake the darling buds of May, Shakespeare s first example of personification, says that
strong winds can hurt the new flower buds and summer s lease hath all too short a date, explains
that the season does not last long. The mention of a lease refers to the fact that summer must end.
The personification of nature is even more evident in the second quatrain. This time the sun is
named the eye of heaven. The speaker also suggests that the sun is sometimes hidden. Additionally,
it is said that everything that has beauty will fade. This may be by chance or by inevitable time.
Shakespeare uses the word untrimm d to refer to these fair things as losing their decorations, or
trimmings.
However, the speaker has changed the overall tone at the beginning of the third quatrain. Moving
away from the beautiful description of summer, the speaker explains

Cancer Valley Essay
Cancer Valley as they called it, is an 85 mile stretch of the Mississippi River which runs from
Baton Rogue to New Orleans. It is a place where many petrochemical facilities and oil refineries
are clustered together. The problem, however, is that in between these clusters there are people
who live there, minorities mostly, who feel that this is some sort of discrimination. Not only that
but they also feel this poses a danger to their health as they believed were responsible for some of
the health issues they were experiencing such as headaches, asthma, neurological and muscular

Racial Tension Between Black And White Americans

Essay 4
The term The Negro Problem was used throughout the 1950 s and 60 s as a slang description of the
racial tension between black and white Americans. The two essays in The Fire Next Time talk
about the problem that the African Americancommunity faced, but from different perspectives. The
author is writing to his nephew and is trying to make him understand that the situation is intolerable
and not likely to change. He suggests that instead of reacting from a place of anger and hate, that
the nephew should fight and strive to change the situation rather than confronting it violently. That
his nephew and even the community as a whole should try to almost outsmart the whites by being
the opposite of what they think of them. To prove them wrong and hopefully change the way they
are looked at. He suggests a change of attitudes on both sides, to spread love and understanding
instead of hate and animosity.
Baldwin grew up on the streets of Harlem; he began to realize the all of the temptations such as
sex and drugs was all around him. In order not to give into these temptations, he went to the church
in the hopes it would give him some insight on what to do. Eventually Baldwin sadly realized that
the church was not preaching the idea of love to everyone, but only to the ones who believed in the
same things they did. It is not too much to say that whoever wishes to become a truly moral human

Why Did Christians Celebrate Pentecost
Christians celebrate Pentecost as the day that the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles after the
resurrected Jesus Christ ascended into heaven.
Jesus followers were downcast after his crucifixion and death, and they were being monitored by
authorities. However, their hope was revived when they saw the resurrected Christ, who promised
the baptism of the Holy Spirit several days after his ascension, The Christian Post details.
Acts 2:1 13 tells the story of Jesus ascension and the Pentecost. After Christ left, the disciples felt
afraid and gathered to pray inside a room. In the middle of their prayers, a loud blowing sound was
heard and tongues of fire were seen on each of the disciples heads. The experience empowered the

negotiate lower wholesale prices due to its huge size. Part of Sam Walton s strategy for catching

each item that is sold, locates the price in a computerized database. After this, the system creates
an accurate customer sales receipt and stores item by item sales information for use in analysis

important role in society due to it symbolizing the sun god, Ra, and Egyptianswere very serious

Singing is optional. Reaching for things is not. We all develop hand eye coordination as a part of
our basic survival skills. Nevertheless, we could go our whole lives without singing and be fine.
We want to sing, but we have to make a conscious effort to learn. Some people make this effort as
children, and we assume they were born with it. This is not so. As with anything, it comes more
naturally to some than to others, but we all have to learn. Numerous people believe that tone
deafness does not exist. Many people believe that they are tone deaf (Lancet 2001). Nevertheless, I
do not believe that they are tone deaf, in other words, people who will never be able to learn to
distinguish between notes.
Many of the tone deaf people have been able to work on their problem, and by correcting their
singing techniques, as well as releasing their constrictions, they have learned to sing in tune.
Tone deaf singers often have severe constrictions around their vocal cords (Gandour, 2000).
Usually they have had these tensions for such a long time that they no longer feel like tensions.
A person often finds psychological reasons for these tensions (Gandour, 2000). Gandour states,

The Benefits Of Renter s Insurance
The Benefits of Renter s Insurance
If you are currently renting a home or apartment, one of the benefits you ve probably noticed is
having the peace of mind that if something breaks, it will be fixed by the landlord or property
owner. It can definitely save you money if something expensive needs to be replaced like a
dishwasher or air conditioner. But what would happen in the event of a fire or break in? If your
personal property is damaged or stolen, the one that is often responsible is the renter. Don t be left
holding the bag, here are four important benefits of Renter s Insurance.
Protect your Property
Obviously, the most apparent benefit of Renter s Insurance is coverage for your property. Many
people who are renting assume that they are covered under their landlord or property owner s
insurance. That is not the case. Their insurance covers their property, not yours. Renter s Insurance
covers things like your clothes, collectables, furniture and electronics. So if these items are
damaged in a fire, flood, tornado, blizzard, etc., you are protected. You are also protected in the
unfortunate event that your property is stolen, and we all know how quickly items like computers,

Miranda Warnings Essay
Miranda warnings can render a subsequent confession admissible if sufficient time has passed to
purge the taint of the illegal seizure. (Brown v. Illinois (1975) 422 U.S. 604 (even if subsequent
statements were voluntarily under the Fifth Amendment, it must be a sufficient act of free will to

defendant was Mirandized and a valid waiver was obtained prior to interrogation. (Brown, supra,

In this case, Meyers was subject to an unreasonable search and seizure in violation of the Fourth

Causes Of The Boxer Rebellion
The Boxer Rebellion was a renowned uprising that occurred in China from 1899 1901, however
there have been many debates between historians surrounding the possible causes that fuelled the
rebellion. There were three major causes that may have encouraged the rebellion, these include anti
foreign, anti Christian and anti Qing sentiment present within in the Chinese communities where
Boxers originated from, such as Shandong. Historians often question the different impacts and used
a series of extended research to back up their view, this results in an unclear conclusion, however
there were some ideas that were more popular and sought out.

Another one of the most important causes of the whole rebellion, was the anti Christian mindset
that the Boxers had. This was closely tied with the anti foreign feeling present amongst the Chinese
people. Western missionaries were a major contribution to the anti Christian feeling as they
challenged many of China s traditions and pressured villages into building churches, this rivalled
China s original religious and spiritual beliefs. After the second opium war had ended, western
missionaries were granted the right to travel freely within China, and Chinese people could practise
Christianity without a penalty. As a result, there was a lot of Western influence pressuring officials.
Originally, Shandong was quite open to Christian influence, however due to the German incident,
Germans were granted the right to build churches as repayment. Hatred for the Christians
accumulated over the years, especially after Germans were given authority over Shandong. In other
states as well, foreign missionaries erected churches on sites that held religious and spiritual value,
this triggered the Chinese to fight back. Incidences of local courts giving temples to the Roman
Catholic authorities to use as churches also led the Boxers to fight back. Anti Christian feelings
cumulated over the years, leading to the sudden uprising caused by the tense relationship between

The Setting of the House on Mango Street
The short story, The House on Mango Street, is a story that is centered within a particular
neighborhood, which is evidently inhabited by middle to lower class folks. Although the
introduction of the story does not state a specific location, it is safe to say that it is not the typical
neighborhood where you would find rich white folks living. For example, the house where the
protagonists live is described as almost collapsing due to brick damage; something that would not
be an issue within a richer neighborhood. Evidently, the setting is one of the most important
elements that constructs the first chapter. The House on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The text also explains how their mom would share stories with them describing how their dream
home would look like. That most likely gave them hope and made them fantasize about someday
living in a better home. However, the story portrays how the narrator became more realistic and
pessimistic about their situation. In the last paragraph of the story, the narrator s parents state that
their current life style is only temporary, but the narrator insists that nothing will change any time
soon. Being the oldest of all the children, she has matured and become more aware that overcoming
financial barriers are considerably long processes, and that their situation will not change from one
day to the next.
The purpose of The House on Mango Street is to create a mental picture within the reader s head.
Throughout reading it, we get a sense of what the family has gone through, and what the severity
of their struggles really are. The setting helps us see that their life styles have improved gradually,
but they are still not where they want to be on the economic ladder. Even though their situation
seems to improve, the narrator makes it clear that they are nowhere close to what she envisions
her life in her dreams. The narrator s pessimistic point of view opens the audience s mind, and
helps us see their situation more realistically. However, somewhere deeply, the narrator still holds

Pros And Cons Of Cyrus
In the mid first millennium BCE, numerous groups arose, each with a different set of
perspectives, worldviews, and attitudes: the Israelites, the Phoenicians, Neo Assyrians, Persians
and Greeks, and so on. For the Jews, they were held captive in Babylon, later returned to
Jerusalem by Cyrus, the King of the Persians. Therefore, according to the first article, Cyrus was
welcome within their society. These people were extremely religious, especially in regards to
Marduk, and they all felt the need to help build their temple in Jerusalem. Everyone wanted to
help for their beliefs and God, and gave gifts, money, and resources. Even the Greeks, who later
defeated the Persians, saw Cyrus as a model ruler (textbook 132). Even more so, according to the
Persian Customs article, most of the clans were made by Cyrus, and the rest, nomad tribes, heavily
depended on Cyrus tribes. The Greeks, meanwhile, had their own opinions on the Persians, seen
through Herodotuswords. He states that the Persians do not see the Gods, as they have no
temples, and instead offer sacrifices; almost as if they enjoy the killings. During this, the Persian
sacrificer does not pray to himself, but to all of the Persians, which illustrates how these people
truly cared about their empire, and had great respect for the King, also sacrificing to the sun, moon,
earth, wind instead of seeing the God itself (Persian Customs). The Greeks did not agree with the
Persians, and around this time had many conflicts.

The Film The Lost Honor Of Katharina Blum
The German films The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum, directed by Dir. Volker Schlondorff and
Margarethe von Trotta in 1975 and The Marriage of Maria Braun, directed by Dir. Rainer Werner
Fassbinder in 1979 both display issues with gender equality. In The Lost Honor of Katharina
Blum, Katharina shares a night with a wanted man and she falls in love with him. She is harassed
by the police and the press when she tells them that she had no part in helping Ludwig Götten, the
wanted terrorist, escape. Katharina is an example of how women were victimized at this time by
establishments run by primarily men, like the police. In The Marriage of Maria Braun, Maria s
husband, Herman, is sent off to battle. After hearing the announced death of her husband, and
experiencing his arrival soon after, Herman is put into prison and Maria promises Herman a life
together once he is released. Against the genderroles present during this time period, Maria works
to attain wealth to fulfill her promise. Though each film presents it differently, both display set
gender roles which provide expectations and issues that Katharina and Maria effectively overcome.
Katharina stands firm, refusing to allow any of the men to control her or to break her through
victimization and harassment. And Maria adapts her femininity in order to exceed the social,
political and cultural expectations set for women. Men play significant roles in both films, they
have a major influence on Katharina and Maria, and they are

subconscious are known as the Id, the Ego and the Superego, all developing at different stages of
our life and all working together with the Conscious mind to create complex human behaviours.
The Superego plays the critical moralizing role. The Ego is the organised, realistic part, mediating
between the desires of the Id and the Superego. The Superego can stop a person from doing certain
things that the Id may want to do. All three elements interact in ways that have a powerful influence

According to Freud, the Ego ensures that the impulses of the Id can be expressed in an
acceptable manner it is the reality check, striving to satisfy desires of the Id in socially realistic

hunger may tempt you to rush out of the room to find something to eat! The Ego realistically
encourages you to wait, maybe imagining what you will eat once the meeting is over when you
can satisfy the demands of the Id in an appropriate and realistic manner. Freud compared the Id to
a horse with the Ego as the rider. The horse provides motion and power, the rider provides
guidance and direction. The Superego is the morality principle. It holds all of our internalized ideals
and moral standards that we acquire from parents, authority figures and society. It is our sense of

Structural Diversity In College Students
Structural diversity is the accumulation of diverse groups of individuals from different
backgrounds openness and probability to become more openly interactive with people of different
groups. Open interaction becomes limited when people begin to segregate themselves based upon
factors such as ethnic groups and socioeconomic status. The acceptance of diversity is very
complex with how the physical and nonverbal interactions allow people to prejudge, yet we have

White students, and no main effects of structural diversity are apparent for Black and Hispanic
students. Moreover, structural diversity has increasingly positive effects at higher levels of campus
diversity. (Brown, 2012) These findings suggest that a college s structural diversity may notably
shape post college behaviors, attitudes, and values, which supports the rationale for considering
race/ethnicity in admissions processes. (Brown,

  • 2. How Did William Penn Impact Society William Penn, an English entrepreneur, had an unforeseen impact on the history of the United States of America. Penn had been already a champion for democracy, religious freedom, and anti slavery movements. Through his good relations with both the common people of England and the Indians of Pennsylvania, Penn was able to secure an entire state for many years to come. So that people could escape persecution for their religious beliefs, have more freedom, and have a good relationship with the Indians. Penn was born on October 14, 1644 at Tower Hill, London, the first of three children of English Admiral Sir William Penn, and Margaret Jasper. Penn had two wives, Hannah Callowhill Penn (1696 1718), Gulielma Maria Springett (1672 1694), he had twelve children in total. In 1660 1662, Penn enrolled in the University of Oxford, where he rejected Anglicanism and was expelled. In 1665, Charles II passed the Conventicle Act, this forbidden gatherings for worship of more than five people, apart from serving the Anglican Church. If you didn t follow it you would be arrested, trailed, and will be guilty, with the punishment of death. In 1665 1666, there was the Great Plague of London it was the last major outbreak of bubonic plague in Britain, killing nearly a quarter of London s population. In 1666, Penn was sent to Ireland by his father to manage the family estates. In 1670 Penn was arrested, and put in jail for preaching after the recently Conventicle Act was passed. • 3. What can the examination of religious texts tell us about... Religious text Definition writing that is venerated for the worship of a deity (Soanes, 2005). During the early nineteenth century it was the writer Max Muller that said for the study of religion the religious text should be a scholar s primary source and focus of their studies. But is this correct? If religious texts are the only evidence that scholars use to study religioncan an accurate picture and understanding of religion be gained? But is Max Muller Correct in his assumption? As a result of this way of thinking many scholars of the twentieth century have tended to study the religious texts of a religion as a primary source for their information. Along with Max Muller, The French philosopher Jaques Derrida also gives a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Religious texts either have a narrative or expository character. There is a great variety of religious and semi religious text for example hymns, prayers, chants, myths, and stories about gods heroes epics sacred laws and they all vary in authority and degree of sacredness. Within a religion the texts are usually collected into standard works of faith or canons and they are determined by general agreement or official religious bodies at which point they are fixed and are then regarded as the authority of that religion. Ninian Smart covers the study of religious texts within his model, the seven dimensions of religion for the study of religion. The particular dimension that can be specially linked to the study of religious texts would be the narrative or mythic dimension, which Smart defines as the story side of religion. Smart also makes the point that the handing down of stories whether they are historical mysterious future telling or heroic is typical of all religions or faiths. These stories often called myths. The term may be a bit misleading, for in the modern study of religion there is no implication that a myth is false. (Smart, 1998) The stories that religious texts are based on are usually based on history or not as the case may be. The stories concerning creation are obviously before history and are usually concerning the subject of how death and suffering came into being. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Each year throughout our education we get into more depth about the events that took place and what actually happened. Both of the two passages explains in their different ways about the Pilgrims journey and their life in the new world. Some of the hardships that the Pilgrims faced while living in the new world was illness and trying to create a new community on the unknown land. The new settlers stayed on the Mayflower for a few months but finally moved onto land permanently. Once the first winter came along many became ill and some even died. • 5. Teen Pregnancy Rates Paper This week s assignment had me take a closer look on how environment truly influences teen pregnancy rates in my community. Teens living in poverty have a greater likelihood of becoming pregnant than teens living in affluent communities. What causes this disparity? Social and environmental factors are in large part responsible for the disparity. The adults in lower income families are often less educated, have a criminal history, hold low income jobs, or are unemployed. Lower income communities are plagued by gun violence, gang inhabitance, and the availability of drugs. Teens that become pregnant at an early age, have parents that themselves were pregnant as teens ( Teen PregnancyFacts, Teen Pregnancy Statistics Teen Pregnancy Environmental... According to the CDC, Teen pregnancy rates are highest within the Hispanic and African American demographic ( Social Determinants and Teen Pregnancy / Teen Pregnancy / Reproductive Health / CDC, 2015). This trend can be linked to neighborhood income inequality and lower educational opportunity for these demographics ( Social Determinants and Teen Pregnancy / Teen Pregnancy / Reproductive Health / CDC, 2015). In my Voicethread post I addressed the idea of generational poverty for many families in urban communities across the country. Adolescents and teens that have grandparents and parents that live in poverty are more likely to experience poverty in their adult lives. Low income families rely on multiple forms of government aid, including food stamps, rent assistance, and other governmental subsidies to decrease their financial burden each month. Cyclic poverty is among the most difficult patterns to overcome. Decreased economic prospects for young girls in urban environments steer them towards teen parenting (Kempner, 2013). Watching their parents get by is enough motivation for vulnerable young women to take the plunge into parenthood. However, parents that seek education and personal betterment often seek safer environments in which to raise their children, breaking the cycle of poverty for their families. That is a question that has gained new life in recent years due to the overwhelming facts the are pouring in from newly found fossils and studies from fossils that have been found in the past. Two groups have formed in the study of this question: those who believe birds are a direct result of dinosaurs and those who feel dinosaurs and birds must have had a common ancestor. Determining which view is correct is a matter of opinion based on fact. The main problem involves the use of cladistics or phylogenetic systematics to group organisms according to characteristics they share. Also, support is gaining that Archaeopteryx was not in fact the first bird, but instead a descendent of an earlier bird ancestor that had developed along a different pathway and actually represents an evolutionary dead end. Two opponents of the birds are dinosaurs theory are Alan Feduccia of the University of North Carolina and Larry Martin of the University of Kansas. They believe that birds evolved from some unknown reptile from a time before dinosaurs came to be. One point they make is that flight must have begun from tree climbing or an arboreal ancestor but that all the proposed dinosaurian ancestors were ground dwellers or cursorial On the other side, supporters for the birds are dinosaurs theory feel there is an unknown dinosaur bird that was arboreal, or simply that birds evolved flight from the ground by chasing after insects. In recent years other fossil finds have stirred the argument even more. One of these is the fossil named Sinosauroptyrex found in China. It appears to be an important link between birds and dinosaurs. Sinosauropteryx appears to be a feathered dinosaur having a mane of feathers along its neck, back, and tail a feature until then seen only in birds. Sinosauroptyrex appears before Archaeopteryx and gives a substantial link between the theropods and birds. One opponent of this find is Martin who feels the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Historical Reflection Of The Film Invictus Elizabeth Garcia Perales Professor Williams English 101 10/24/17 Invictus The two segregated fences that separated South Africa were broken down by former South African President Nelson Mandela, who used South Africa s Springboks rugby team as a tool to unite the economically and racially divided country that was suffering by the Apartheid that lasted about 50 years. Yet Nelson Mandela made it his goal to conquer the white supremacy and racial segregation of his beloved country. Mandela s long journey and dedication for South Africawas duplicated by Director Clint Eastwood s Oscar nominated film, Invictus. In novel Invictus by John Carlin he makes Nelson s Mandela s accomplishment of ending the apartheid more strategic and political unlike the film but kept to Mandela s character. Clint Eastwood showed Mandela as powerful, yet approachable and humble leader who strategically used the popular universal language of sports to unite post apartheid South Africa. Director Eastwood balanced the historical significance of South Africa s struggles of the time and was yet able to make the film into a classic hollywood sports drama. When Nelson Mandela was elected as South Africa s president he did not take any breaks, his mission and dedication showed in all his actions to remove hate and racial inequality from his country. During Mandela s first few days of his term he noticed that the cabinet members of the Apartheid were quickly leaving as the new cabinet members stepped in and he saw this as an opportunity to remove racial segregation in the workplace. Mandela respectfully asked the Afrikaner members to join his committee to try and give equality throughout post apartheid South Africa. Many South African s were shocked by Mandela s forgiveness, even the black Africans of his own cabinet, who have to work alongside the same Afrikaners who singlehandedly made the Apartheid. Clint Eastwood included this event in the film because it spotlighted on Mandela s efforts and his commitment to promote progress in South Africa. The moment of Mandela s direct leader abilities was captured in the film and novel when he fights the new Rugby Sport and Clint Eastwood added how separated black and white ... • 8. Increased Patient Responsibility We like to think of medicine as a vast sea of knowledge, a science of certainty and applied research intended to heal and cure. Patients visit their doctors expecting to be diagnosed, prescribed, and treated. For several patients, this optimistic outlook is in fact the order of things. But, for many others, medicineis an experimental endeavor and very human in nature. Atul Gawande, in his collection of essays entitled Complications: A Surgeon s Notes on an Imperfect Science, sheds light on this view of medicine as a field of possibilities and dead ends, improvements and failures. This once popular perception of medicine is in a sense antiquated. Still, by admitting that there exists a discrepancy between the past and present views of the patient doctor dynamic, the expanding role of the patient can be recognized. The riskiness and unpredictability of medical care have made physicians more anxious in terms of the treatments they recommend to their patients, such that the patients are now the ultimate authority with respect to their health. Doctors today are taking a more liberal approach to medicine. This development has indirectly provided patients with the freedom to explore their own personal medical goals. Gawande describes the case of a twenty one year old woman who was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in one of her breasts. Her surgeon, who normally advised his patients with breast cancer to undergo a mastectomy, felt forced to reconsider this operation, as he was hesitant about removing the breast of a woman so young. He instead discussed with her other possible treatment options, explaining their benefits and risks (211). The patient, provided with the proper information and resources, was given the opportunity to define her own well being. It was a decision that she would have to live with for the rest of her life, and so only she had the right to make that decision. Such issues have modified the patient experience by ... Faith, when talking about it in the religious sense, makes it even that much harder to understand. Everyone believes in something, and each of those beliefs have an enormous effect on how they live their lives. Gerald O Collins, a Jesuit Priest, states that within the Christian faith, lies two components: Fides Quae and Fides Qua. Fides Quae is the faith which is believed, or the content of that faith. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This statement simplified would essentially mean that in order to have faith you must be able to trust in God, even though we 2 cannot physically be in his presence on Earth. To elaborate, a faithful follower of christ must first have knowledge of the religion, agree to the terms, and then trust in that faith. Faith requires an individual to not only trust in God himself, but to also firmly believe the scriptures and teachings from within the Bible as well. Both this knowledge and trust is very crucial to the understanding and involvement with the Catholic faith. So many people simply agree with the teachings of the Bible, but do not fully trust in its meaning. For example, every Catholic understands that Jesus was nailed to the cross and died for our salvation, but they don t believe that in the harder times in life, that Jesus will come through on this promise for us. Sonnet 18 has become one of his most well loved poems. Shakespeare includes symbols of time, decay and eternity within this work. The speaker explicates his unending love for his beloved and how it will live on after death. The first quatrain introduces the personification of summer. The speaker begins the sonnet by asking if he can compare his friend to a warm, summer day. A brief statement stating how lovely and temperate thee is follows this rhetorical question. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, Shakespeare s first example of personification, says that strong winds can hurt the new flower buds and summer s lease hath all too short a date, explains that the season does not last long. The mention of a lease refers to the fact that summer must end. The personification of nature is even more evident in the second quatrain. This time the sun is named the eye of heaven. The speaker also suggests that the sun is sometimes hidden. Additionally, it is said that everything that has beauty will fade. This may be by chance or by inevitable time. Shakespeare uses the word untrimm d to refer to these fair things as losing their decorations, or trimmings. However, the speaker has changed the overall tone at the beginning of the third quatrain. The two essays in The Fire Next Time talk about the problem that the African Americancommunity faced, but from different perspectives. The author is writing to his nephew and is trying to make him understand that the situation is intolerable and not likely to change. He suggests that instead of reacting from a place of anger and hate, that the nephew should fight and strive to change the situation rather than confronting it violently. That his nephew and even the community as a whole should try to almost outsmart the whites by being the opposite of what they think of them. Part of Sam Walton s strategy for catching up was to set up a point of sale system. Such a system is a computerized network that identifies each item that is sold, locates the price in a computerized database. After this, the system creates an accurate customer sales receipt and stores item by item sales information for use in analysis of sales and reordering inventory. The strategic use of this helps Wal Mart avoid overstocking issues by learning what merchandise items are slow sellers. This has made Wal Mart s inventory and distribution system a world leader. Another one of the most important causes of the whole rebellion, was the anti Christian mindset that the Boxers had. This was closely tied with the anti foreign feeling present amongst the Chinese people. Western missionaries were a major contribution to the anti Christian feeling as they challenged many of China s traditions and pressured villages into building churches, this rivalled China s original religious and spiritual beliefs. After the second opium war had ended, western missionaries were granted the right to travel freely within China, and Chinese people could practise Christianity without a penalty. As a result, there was a lot of Western influence pressuring officials. Originally, Shandong was quite open to Christian influence, however due to the German incident, Germans were granted the right to build churches as repayment. Pros And Cons Of Cyrus In the mid first millennium BCE, numerous groups arose, each with a different set of perspectives, worldviews, and attitudes: the Israelites, the Phoenicians, Neo Assyrians, Persians and Greeks, and so on. For the Jews, they were held captive in Babylon, later returned to Jerusalem by Cyrus, the King of the Persians. Therefore, according to the first article, Cyrus was welcome within their society. These people were extremely religious, especially in regards to Marduk, and they all felt the need to help build their temple in Jerusalem. Everyone wanted to help for their beliefs and God, and gave gifts, money, and resources. Even the Greeks, who later defeated the Persians, saw Cyrus as a model ruler (textbook 132). Even more so, according to the Persian Customs article, most of the clans were made by Cyrus, and the rest, nomad tribes, heavily depended on Cyrus tribes. The Greeks, meanwhile, had their own opinions on the Persians, seen through Herodotuswords. He states that the Persians do not see the Gods, as they have no temples, and instead offer sacrifices; almost as if they enjoy the killings. During this, the Persian sacrificer does not pray to himself, but to all of the Persians, which illustrates how these people truly cared about their empire, and had great respect for the King, also sacrificing to the sun, moon, earth, wind instead of seeing the God itself (Persian Customs). Volker Schlondorff and Margarethe von Trotta in 1975 and The Marriage of Maria Braun, directed by Dir. Rainer Werner Fassbinder in 1979 both display issues with gender equality. In The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum, Katharina shares a night with a wanted man and she falls in love with him. She is harassed by the police and the press when she tells them that she had no part in helping Ludwig GГ¶tten, the wanted terrorist, escape. In The Marriage of Maria Braun, Maria s husband, Herman, is sent off to battle. After hearing the announced death of her husband, and experiencing his arrival soon after, Herman is put into prison and Maria promises Herman a life together once he is released.
