The Wisdom Of Whores-Bureaucrats Chapter Summary
Elizabeth Pisani s The Wisdom of Whores Bureaucrats, Brothels and the Business of AIDS is a
great book (along with a great website). Elizabeth Pisani is an epidemiologist with years of
experience working on HIV/AIDS (or sex and drugs, as she puts, which sounds a lot, well, sexier)
at a variety of agencies, including UNAIDS. The book is the story of her frustrations at the way the
international community, national governments, NGOS and AIDSactivists have dealt with the
epidemics, as well as her hopes in some of the progress made. To me, precisely because the book is
data driven, it was not controversial. My reaction was more, well, if that s what the data show, so
be it. But also, I think, the book was billed as controversial... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The writer on the contrary points out that the initiatives have not achieved the required target
because some of them advocate for things which are not practical. Instead, she proposes that
emphasis should be laid on educating people about safe sex and not trying to restrict and control
individual liberty supposedly for the greater good. She believes the disease is not about poverty
and gender related issues, it is behavior change. Many people in African countries get the virus
because of having unsafe sex with multiple partners. This is why the rates of infection are not
declining despite the billions being spent. The honesty box tries to bring out hidden facts behind the
myths told by various researchers concerning HIV/AIDS. Some of these myths are based on the
data presented which are usually inflated to favor funding and to act as a precautionary measure
that AIDS exists everywhere. The book opens the honesty box on drawbacks of medical research
within the tropics. Pisani tackles highly contentious issues with zest, including the possible public
health shortcoming of antiretroviral treatment, in addition to the benefits of mandatory HIV/AIDS
testing. The author also presents data to show that if couples living in Thailand were to have
further premarital sex, then their men would be the least likely to use commercial sex workers and

The City That Become Safe
In this paper I will discuss and explain anatomy of a crime decline in New York City as well as if in
these days can we say that the city is safe. Purpose of this book The City That Become Safe
written by Franklin E. Zimring is to show us how crime rate changed during 1990 to 2009.
According to author this book presents a detailed profile of New York Citycrimeover 20 years
period. Book provides the vital statistics of the crime drop by type of crime, by borough, and by
year. There are two reasons that such exhaustive detail is required as a beginning to the study.
First, the size and the length of the drop are without precedent in the recorded history of
American urban crime. The second reason that the details of the crime decline are needed is as a
road map for explaining what changes in the city and its government might have caused this epic
decline. The more we know about the specific character of the decline when it happened, where it
happened, which offenses the better our capacity for sorting through different theories of what
caused the drop. In addition, shifts the focus from the two decades of the decline to an assessment
of current conditions in the city. How safe is New York City?.
The mission of this book is to provide a statistical profile of the notable crime decline that started
in New York City in the early 1990s and has further well past the of a new century. The first
portion of analysis will focus on three important features of the official

Phoenicia Downfall
The Phoenicians were a group of people who thrived on the western side of the Fertile Crescent.
They first originated from Bahrain. They were the most wealthy and powerful traders in 1100 B.C.
Their first cities were next to the Mediterranean Sea in the area of Lebanon. Although the
Phoenicians did not control a grand empire, they were able to become rich through trade.
Eventually, they were able to spread their area all around the Mediterranean Sea. The Phoenicians
started their road to riches in a funny way. Around one of their cities on an island called Tyre,
tons of snails from the ocean were swept onshore by the ocean waves. The Phoenicians tried to
make use of these snails, and they discovered they could indeed make use of these snails. By
squeezing the poor snails, the Phoenicians could extract a very rich purple dye. This production
of purple dye led them to be called the purple people. However, the process was slow and tiring, as
making only one pound of this dye required the squeezing of 600,000 different snails. However,
this dye was worth making, as it was able to be sold for extremely high prices. The... Show more

The Life Of Joan Of Arc
Since God had commanded it, it was necessary that I do it. Since God commanded it, even if I had
a hundred fathers and mothers, even if I had been a King s daughter, I would have gone
nevertheless. (Joan of Arc) Joan of Arc once said after she had gotten the call to follow God. Joan
of Arc was and still is an inspiration to everyone. By her early life she is recodnized, end of life,
and by how she influences the world today. Joan of Arcwas a great leader and woman. Jeanne d
Arc, or Joan of Arc in English, was born in 1412 in DomrГ©my, France while they were at war
with England. Of a poor farmer named Jacques d Arc she was the daughter and her mother
Isabelle or RomГ©e. Her mother taught her how to work at home and on the farm. About God and
the Catholic Church she only ever learned. When she hit the age of thirteen, she started hearing
voices and having visions. In a few of her visions were SaintMichaeland Saint Catherine. To help
fight for France against the English she believed that they were all telling her. At sixteen years
of age, she was forced into a marriage by her father after taking a vow of chastity, so she went to
the court and they said that she would not be compelled to marry. Joan of Arc was an extremely
stubborn and strong willed woman from an early age who would do what she thought was right
and what needed to be done. (Joan of Arc) In the late spring of 1428 Joan of Arc went off to fight
in the war. The virgin who was destined to save France, she

Burial Customs In America Essay
According to an article submitted to the Berkeley Planning Journal, approximately 800,000 gallons
of formaldehyde is buried in the United States every year. To put the amount of this hazardous
chemical that Americans use to bury their people in perspective, it is enough to fill one and a
quarter Olympic sized swimming pools each year (Calderone). Unfortunately, this is only one of the
many issues that is hurting the environment and has arised from modern burials. Because of the
negative environmental effects that modern burial customs are causing, Americans should switch
back to natural burials in order to decrease the impact that modern burial practices have left on
Earth. In antebellum America, burial customs were onced a personal family issue. As custom, the
families of early Americans were expected to wash and dress their loved ones in family parlors and

Up until the Civil War, Gary Laderman, the Professor of American Religious History and
Cultures at Emory University, explains that, ...most Americans had no knowledge of the
[preserving] procedure and abhorred any unnatural intervention of the body. But during and after
the Civil War, families needed to delay the natural decaying process in order to have sufficient
time to identify their loved ones who lost their lives during the war.. Because transportation in the
mid 1800 s is nowhere near as good as modern transportation, families had to wait several days,
even weeks, to receive the body of their loved one. Therefore, the Civil War was responsible for the
emergence of the embalming process in the United States. In the 1850 s, Dr. Thomas Holmes had
experimented with the French method of arterial embalming and soon created his own embalming
fluid to which he was then hired to embalm the corpses of dead Union officers (Kelly). As a result
of the growing popularity of embalming, Laderman explains that the number of undertakers was

High School Dropout Rates And Teen Pregnancy
High School dropout rates have been a problem since the word high school became a term. To
begin, a study researched by Education Week, Rumberger interprets ...The nation s leading
education periodical estimates that 1.3 million students from the high school class of 2010 failed
to graduate (Rumberger 61). Taking those findings you can go a step further and narrow the field
to one of the causes of dropoutrates, which is teen pregnancy. By focusing on teen pregnancy your
able to narrow down the field of research and solve one problem at a time. According to
Rumberger ...68 percent of young women who had a child by age eighteen had completed high
schoolby age twenty two compared to 94 percent of young women who did not experience a teen
birth (1294). These numbers can translate into discovering solutions to fix the dropout rates of
pregnant teenagers. Discovering the needs of pregnant teenagers and teen mothers will lead to an
understanding evolving into solutions to prevent pregnant teens from dropping out of high school.
Allowing for the increase of female graduates. Fixing one problem of high school dropouts allows
for other possibilities in other areas. Therefore, by developing after school programs with
counseling, along with programs to prepare for the future and to provide child care services for
single mothers the numbers will increase of students finishing high school. Generally speaking,
pregnancy for teenage girls, ages fourteen through eighteen

Major Luxon arrived, leading the Marines from the front; it was impressive to the Rowland
family to see the Marine Commander on the road with his men. Major Luxon met with Mr. and
Mrs. Luxon for about an hour. Mr. Rowland then asked the Major to follow him. Major Luxon
shrugged and thought, why not? The two men headed out to one of the many barns on the
property. Mr. Rowland swung open one of the doors, You think this will help you? Mr. Rowland
asked MajorLuxon. The barn was filled from top to bottom with wheat and corn. We had a

The Mormon Myth
The Mormon faith otherwise known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, was
founded in the early 19th century in upstate New York. The mormon prophet and founder Joseph
Smith found golden plates that introduced a previously unknown third section of the bible.
However, Mormonism receives a heavy amount of criticism due to the fact that Smith told his
disciples that only he could see the plates, consequently, there is no proof of the plates existence.
The religion itself is founded upon the experiential aspect of religion. The founder of the religion,
Joseph Smith, was visited by an angel named Moroni and told of the location of golden plates and
two stones; these plates were previously unknown teachings of god written in a language... Show

Ethno-Nationalist Terrorism
Ethno nationalist terrorist groups rely on the terrorism, which seeks to establish an independent
state for ethnic, linguistic, cultural groups. They claim themselves as revolutionary groups, who
want to create own ethno centric government. Ethnic terrorism differs from religious and economic
causes of terrorism. Ethno nationalist are more nationalist than religious counterparts, and they
emphasize on national identity, community mobilization, group identity, and oppose the idea of
terrorism. They use violenceto keep their presence alive in the particular community, sustain their
political agendas, and find meaningful solutions. In addition, ethno nationalist terrorism use fear as
a tool for polarizing people from different culture, idea, and developing alternative identities. For

Essay Is There a Hunger Issue at the University of Kansas
Introduction Hunger is an issue that impacts students at the University of Kansas. This report will
highlight the evaluation that was done to justify the opening of a food pantry on campus. The
report covers the initial proactive evaluation, the clarifying evaluation, an interactive evaluation,
and a monitoring evaluation. Proactive Evaluation The purpose of the proactive evaluation is to
find out if there is a hunger issue at the University of Kansas. Based on the results of the evaluation,
a program could be created to meet the needs of the student population that is impacted by hunger.
Information for the program can be collected from students on campus and from local food pantries.

Maslow identified needs that must be built upon for development to occur. These needs are
physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self actualization (Maslow, 1943). Physiological
needs include access to food, water, shelter, sex, and breathing. If students do not have access to
food, then their basic needs are not being met. If their basic needs are not being met, then they will
have difficulty reaching esteem and self actualization. This is an issue because higher education
serves as a tool for students to gain experience in the realm of self actualization (problem solving,
creativity, and morality). Other institutions are having issues with hunger on their campuses. The
University of California Los Angeles has a small food pantry on campus. The food is donated and
students can take what they need (NPR). The University of Missouri has a student run food pantry
close to campus. This pantry allows students, faculty, and staff to take food once a month. It does
not require proof of need (Mizzou). Colorado State University is looking to have a food pantry on
campus, but the administration is wanting more support from the student population (CSU Article).
It is beneficial to have the investment from students, since they will be using the pantry and can
help spread information through their social networks. Clarifying Evaluation The proactive
evaluation helped

Essay on The Power of Money in Campaign Finance
It may seem that with the Buckley decision, soft money and PACs the hope for reform has been
lost, however there is still hope. The Supreme Court upheld the voluntary public financing of
presidential election, which was considered a great step forward because taking public funds
requires the candidate to limit their spending on the federal level. There is also the hard money in
political campaigns, which is strictly regulated by law through the Federal Election Commission.
Hard money is the contrast to soft money meaning that it is the contributions made by a person
or PAC that gives to a federal campaign or political party for the use in federal elections. But of
course with one step forward there is always two steps back. Because of... Show more content on

As a result, all means of legal cheating had been justified.
PACs and overly wealthy individuals are not the only ones dipping their hands in the secretly
jumbled world of campaign finance. Smaller interest groups and lobbyists are also getting their
favors and paychecks. Because election laws are so crammed with exceptions these different
groups can directly and openly support a candidate spending as much money as they would like.
This loophole is referred to as independent expenditures. The Supreme Court cleared the way for
smaller groups to work directly for or against a candidate, so long as the group does not coordinate
its efforts with the candidate it supports. Although these expenditures tend to be a just a bit smaller
then soft money funds, they are far more straightforward and blunt which proves to be even more
effective (Anderson 2000).
In my view, campaign finance has gone from something that could potentially help give the power
of government back to the people to a complete joke. When trying to answer the questions of
campaign finance you get a series of hidden meanings, jumbled definitions and no real answer to
you questions, which is exactly the way Washington and campaign workers like it. The more
bizarre and convoluted the rules are the more money each campaign can make. It seems that only
way to find out any real information is to become a member of the inside, controlling the way
campaigns really operate and change.

Skywest Executive Summary
Executive Summary: SkyWest
SkyWest Inc. (SkyWest) primarily competes as a domestic regional carrier. In this capacity
SkyWest provides service from small cities using regional jets to support the network carriers hub
and spoke system (Northwest, Delta, United, etc.). Regional airlines feed the large national carriers
by bringing customers from small airports to major hubs to catch connecting flights. Most of the
flights operated by regional carriers are in partnership with the major carriers. SkyWest has
partnerships with Delta, United, and Midwest Airlines.

Strategic Issues
Through internal and external analysis, we have discovered three strategic issues which merit front
burner attention.
The first of these issues is the fact that SkyWest has all of its eggs in a few baskets. It s either
feast of famine depending on the success of Delta, United, and Midwest Airlines. In a declining
airline industry, it is vital for SkyWest to lower its risk.
The second area which demands attention is operational efficiency. SkyWest Airlines has been
above average with benchmarks like cost per seat mile, airplane turnaround, etc. but ASA has been
well below average. In order to retain customers SkyWest must improve operational efficiency.
The final strategic issue is customer service. With such low switching costs, customers can easily
find other airlines with which to do business. In today s economic climate consumers are hunting
for the cheapest price, unless loyalty can be developed through quality customer service. These
areas for attention include on time arrivals, safety image, and bag handling.
Strategic Options
1. Expand and diversify through the identification of new contracts
2. Improve operational efficiency
3. Improve customer service
4. Compete with hub and spoke network carriers
5. Acquire (an)other regional airline(s)
Recommendations

Maryland V. King Case Study
Case Briefing Maryland v. King
I.Facts
The Maryland DNA Collection Act (MDCA) gave the state and police officers permission to
collect DNA specimens from people who are detained for a violent crime, an attempt to conduct a
violent crime, breaking and entering, or attempted to break and enter. Police arrested Alonzo Jay
King, Jr. was on first and second assault charges. While he was under arrest before his sentence,
King s DNA was collected and documented in Maryland s DNA file. King s DNA to matched a
rape case that was never solved. This evidence was the only evidence that ties King to the rape.

King appealed his case, stating that the Maryland DNA Collection Act violated the Fourth

The Court apprehended that conducting a DNA buccal test as a part of the arrest process and it
does not violate the Fourth Amendment because the test serves from a state that does not require a

The Destruction Of The Earth
As humans, why do, we feel the need to destroy everything that we see? Why is it that if it does
not make us more money than it is not worth it? The Earth, the only planet in our little solar
system to contain intelligent life and the only use we can find with that intelligence is to
destroy one another and the planet we live on. Ever since the beginning of time humans have
only cared about themselves and now that greed is destroying our planet. The pollution of this
planet is astronomical, rivers and parts of the ocean filled with trash and the skies over cities
have been blackened by smog. When will all of this end and why do we have to do this to
ourselves. Did you know that it is more cost efficient to just throw something away in a landfill
than to recycle. Same thing goes for sewage and chemical wasteit is a million times cheaper to dump
it in the ocean than spend the money, man hours and resource to filter the waste. Air pollution is the
most intoxicating, people assume because they cannot see it therefore it does not exist. These are
common forms of humandestruction to the environment. But the real question is when are we
going to stop this destruction from consuming our planet until there is nothing left but death.
Humans are greedy, I know this, but it does not give you the right under no circumstance to destroy
the Earthbecause you are too lazy to recycle or filter your own waste. We only have one Earth do

The Dignity of Simplicity
The Dignity Of Simplicity
(The State Of Being True By Me)
I. Introduction
As Albert Einstein said, Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.
It s true; everything should be pared down as much as possible to fit our lives, but not beyond that
point or we have actually crossed the line into complication.
According to my friends, dignity is simplicity itself. You should just be yourself, the simplest you
can be. Simplicity is how you respect yourself from being simple. But for me when you talk about
of dignity ladies and gentlemen, we are also referring to purity. I believe that simplicity is at its best
when it is uninfluenced and that it speaks altruism and honesty. Simple in the sense that even
mistakes can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It works on the principle that twenty percent of what you do, accounts for eighty percent of the
importance you possess.
Simplicity is not just a noble character, but also an asset. It is a ladder to success. It makes one an
object of admiration which cannot be bought with money or lived easily. It is not as easy as it is
called. When you are without spot, you re not only a figure for admiration, but also a focus for
jealousy and hatred; and in no distant time, so many unwanted notes would be filed against you.
You need not be weary or worry because I have an assurance for you. In style, in character, in
manner, in all things, the supreme excellence is simplicity.
These, you ought to know; purity and simplicity are two wings with which man soars above the
earth and all temporary nature. It takes humility, reconvenes and willingness to do right no matter
what it takes. It is in big contrast with pretence. It saves you from the high cost of pretence, putting
a front of who you are not.
Elizabeth may have a quarrel with her friend; her simplicity would make her focus on solving the
problem rather than figuring out who is at fault. This is because the problem is her problem, not her
friend.
Another case in which simple living lifestyle is hard is when one gets short of ideas and will require
you to seek for advice. It is easy to ask from a superior and

Tim Burton Influences
Tim Burton the creator of a plethora of childhood films is in numerous of ways, so to say one of
the best directors. The style of Tim Burton is very different to the regular fairy tales that people

Tim Burton away from other directors is his influences from when he was a kid. Tim Burton uses
many thoughts that some may call junk. However, he uses these tools to create a whole new
image that he interpreted in a whole new way. Many of Tim Burton s works were often influenced
by Dr. Seuss, Edgar Allen Poe, and Vincent Price. They often promoted rhyme and plot in an
extraordinary way. However the characteristics that actually set him apart from the... Show more

All of Tim Burton s movies have some sort of editing that allows the setting and plot to be in the
right places and location at all times. As Tim Burton uses editing for a myriad of his animated
and stop motion projects it helps construct the vision of the pictures flow smoother and have a
more desired effect that intrigues people. These effects can be seen in all films, however, better in
some than others. We see excellent use of editing from Tim Burton in graphics and video quality
to produce things look better and flow easier. Some examples of this, come in the movies of
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory(2005) and Edward Scissorhands(1990). For example, we see
that in Charlie and the Chocolate factory(2005) the editing plays a big role in what we think of
the characters and our viewpoints of the characters simply by the editing and graphical imagery.
Augustus Gloop, a fat boy with tiny eyes of German descent, to make the character Tim Burton
used editing to create a child who was fat and animated to make an appearance that didn t hurt
the casters feeling of being fat and unfit. Another example is in Edward Scissorhands(1990) we
see the look of the town in a plastic and unrealistic and cheap way. The way that it looked showed
how artificial and unlifelike the town really was. These examples show how animating and editing
can greatly change how we see the image of a character or

Urbanization-Subdivisions and Suburbs Essay
Growing up in Northern Toronto, it had never occurred to me that the neighbourhood I was
living in was planned long before my neighbors or I decided to move and build this a
community. As I grew older and I started to notice new areas being built I noticed that from afar
those hundreds of houses were being built and organized in preparation for hundreds of families.
Personally, I am interested in the development of subdivisions and the suburbs due to my family
owning a property around the area of Lake Simcoe. It seems as though that with every passing year
it takes another few kilometers or minutes to escape the confines of the citydue to the growth of the
suburbs around Toronto.

Years of maintenance and construction have led to today s London Metro System, one of the
most sophisticated in the world (History, 2014). Aside from the city, the London s suburbs were
built on a model which employed a rectilinear grid and traffic system in order to limit traffic.
Victorian suburban planners and developers built using two types of plans; that of a Victorian semi
detached house, a modern day duplex, and Villas for the upper class (Brown, 2004).
While the suburbs continue to grow around the world, the major development in suburban living
took place in the United States following the Second World War (Galyean, 2012). Abraham Levitt,
an American entrepreneur, decided to establish a planned community in Nassau County, Long
Island. Levitt planned on converting former farmland into a suburban community where
thousands of individuals could find living space. Approximately, 17,000 identical houses were
built and sold or rented to middle income families (Naish, 2014). Among the American population,
there was a desire for individual freedom following World War II. One being able to provide a
large living space and accumulate material wealth became engrained in the American Dream. Many
realized that the suburbs and living in planned sub divisions of land was an affordable option led to
the growth of suburbia throughout the late 20th century. These same desires are what allows

Major Theological Essay on Dreaming and В¬ The Croods
Everyone has a dream, something that he or she wants to do or have, or someone whom he or she
wants to be in the future. That dream is also what made the first modern family witness the
unfolding of a new world. From their cave going out into the wonders of the land, the Croods, with
the help of Guy and his belt, were set on an adventure that changed their way of living and
perceiving themselves and their environment. Amidst the cataclysms that seemed to chase them,
they learned to survive in more meaningful ways and slowly did they know that the world is
changing and that they have the ability to adapt to it and not just hide away from it.

A journey of faith is a combination of believing, doing, and trusting. These three distinct
dimensions of doctrines, morals, and worship make faithing, something that the teenage Crood
did throughout the movie, possible. From the beginning, Eep knew that something more
wonderful existed beyond their cave walls, which is the very reason why she hated staying
inside and letting herself be contented with the darkness of what she sarcastically called home
sweet home. Even if she has not seen it, she was confident that it was as beautiful as the sun that
she has been looking forward to see each passing day. This, then, translated into action, as she
did what the rest of her family thought was bad: go out of the cave on her own. She did this not
to betray or disregard the safety of the people whom she left there, but instead, to follow the
source of her fascination and take hold of the light she wanted to capture. When she met Guy and
eventually trusted him in the process, her fascination grew into desire to plunge into the new
world, fueled by her belief that she and her family would be free from the cave and have a greater

What Are The Environmental Effects Of American Consumerism

Michael Kimmel s Manhood In America
In Michael Kimmel s Manhood in America: A Cultural History , he provides a broad, heavily
researched cultural history of the development of manhood and the definition of masculinity
throughout American history. Beginning in the 19th century and ending in the present day
administration of Barack Obama, Kimmel identifies that over time society has demanded more and
more that the common manbe self made . Kimmel s overall goal in writing this book is to introduce
a new concept of masculinitythat eliminates the battle that every man faces when trying to achieve
so called manhood . He explores the natural instincts that men have and how these instincts are
affected by self control, the surrounding environment, and overall levels of happiness. Starting in
the 19th century, men had an increasing pressure to prove their masculinity. In order to support
themselves and their families, American men s desire to prove masculinity came at the cost of
minorities, women, and even man s own personal happiness. This restlessness of being a... Show

In my opinion, man s instinct to prove his masculinity, desire for competition, and longing to reach
manhood is natural and cannot be changed. Overtime, this natural instinct has decreased and
increased as the environment has changed. The anger sparked by progressivism in the workforce
brought out this instinct in American men in the 19th century, while further institutions promoting
manliness continued to evolve in the 20th century. In modern day, people such as myself who
believe that everyone should have equal opportunity keeps the instinct of proving my manhood in

Good stress. Bad stress. The two are viewed as the Superman and Lex Luger archnemeses. Yet, is
good stress different from bad stress, and does each produce a different response in the human
body? Even doctors and psychologists take opposing views on the concept of good versus bad
stress. It is akin to the 1980s debate about good egg/bad egg as it pertained to cholesterol. That
debate still exists, as does the debate over how much stress, and what kind of stress is good or bad
for us.
One of the authoritative papers on stress, Physiology and Neurobiology of Stress and Adaptation:
Central Role of The Brain by Bruce S. McEwen, examines that question closely, and says that there
the two terms refer to the same physiological response, but that there are marked differences. In
other words, there is only stress, but short term responses can be adaptive, while prolonged
exposure or reaction to stress can be maladaptive and harmful.
He says that stress is a word used to describe challenges that are emotionally or

Australian Dual Citizenship Essay
Australian dual nationals can travel to the US: Malcolm Turnbull
The article Australian dual nationals can travel to the US published on the 31st of January 2017 by
The Sydney Morning Herald, written by Tom Mrlloy and David Wroe, reflects how Australian
citizens with dual citizenship will not be affected by the US s contradicting immigration
prohibition. At the Parliament House, Canberra, Mr Turnbull stated that people with dual
citizenship are approved to visit the US, despite their beliefs or culture.
The main issue raised in this article was that Australian citizens which hold a dual citizenship are

I never knew citizens from countries, such as, Pakistan, Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey or Iran, loss
permission to travel to the US, conversely, owning an Australian citizenship. I found this very
unfair. I know those countries may have terrorist and dangerous people, but minority is like them,
they are still people, like us. In the future, I believe, I would like to support everyone from refugee
countries. I would like to take action helping the innocent people, who had nothing to do with the
bombing and terrorist attacks. Those five countries withdrawal of dual citizenship could become an

Family connection could be lost or interrupted, causing distress, anger, grief and etc., initiating

I believe, everyone in Australia should be treated fairly and have equal rights. I also support people

and Nike in this writing assignment, we are again compelled to revisit the critical distinction of
conduct that is legal, yet still unethical. In both instances, Levi Strauss and Nike behaved with
the parameters of legal conduct, yet few would argue that profiting from exploitive work
conditions is an ethical behavior of any socially responsible organization (broad view social
responsibility). Obviously, it s very tempting to just condense this argument to the point of bad

The end result of this ruling is that corporations that profit greatly from outsourced labor are now
able to pay for the elections of our Congressmen and gee, wonder how this economic favor will
be repaid when attempts to rein in outsourcing come up in Congress? Let s move on to our two
protagonists in this debate: Levi Strauss and Nike. Now that we ve got the backdrop well in
hand, and a reasonable person would agree that a massive systemic failure in the U.S. has
allowed and promoted unchecked outsourcing of jobs, it s time to discuss these two corporate
giants and their respective behaviors here. Do these two corporations have a responsibility to
monitor the conduct of the companies they do business with in particular, their contractors and
suppliers? As a personal believer in the broader view of corporate social responsibility, I believe
that they do. Notwithstanding the fact that all of this outsourcing is legal, and despite the
mitigating factors that I ve argued above that do alleviate these two companies of all of the blame
I still believe that they need to take the higher moral ground. Levi Strauss overall has conducted
itself with far greater corporate social responsibility than Nike has, in my judgment. Strauss for
many years withdrew from China due to their notoriety as a non democratic country with abusive
labor conditions.

Smoking Persuasive Essay
Although smoking is seen as a right of freedom, it has numerous consequences that not only
damage smokers. According to David M. Ludington, Cigarette smoke is the most dangerous of the
toxic elements in our environment. Smoking is responsible for almost 500 000 deaths each year in
the United States (1). For the reason that many citizens are not well informed with the effects of
smoking, the United States has a high death rate per year. The act of smoking in public should be
banned, for it can influence any uninformed individuals to acquire the habit of smoking, which
leads to future health risks. Smoking imposes hazardous health problems to anyone nearby, and
inclusively contributes to various environmental and social problems.
Smoking can cause imminent health issues to all who choose to smoke. Lung cancer, asthma, heart
attacks, and lung diseases are some of the results from smoking. Many do not take this in account
of when attracted to smoking. For this reason, it is unethical for authorities to not fully illegalize
smoking in public. Individuals have the freedom to smoke, yet the government must oversee the
whole impact to the communities. People of all ages are vulnerable to what their naked eye
perceives. If and when innocents desire to smoke, they would have now exposed themselves to a
path of health risks. This course of action is proven to repeat throughout generations as it has been
since American Indians first introduced tobacco to the European settlers. It is

Increase In Popularity And Rejuvenation Of Blackpool
The topic of the essay will look into the increase in popularity and rejuvenation of the seaside
town of Blackpool in the north west of England. Various factors played a role in the growth in
popularity for visiting Blackpool. The popularity of Blackpool will be compared to the gradual
decline of the destination. The destination will then be analysed to see if the area is contributing
enough facilities for the rejuvenation of Blackpool. Butler s TourismArea Lifecycle will be used to
determine if the area of Blackpool has successfully rejuvenated the area to attract tourists.
Blackpool first reached popularity throughout the eighteenth century. Serval factors resulted in the
expansion of tourism in Blackpool. The first factor was the publishing of a book on the positive
effects of sea water titled the uses of sea water by Richard Russel. In the book, he stated, One
should drink sea water, bathe in it and eat every product of the sea in which its virtue is
concentrated (Russel.R 1760). The printing of the dissertation increased the tourism to Blackpool
slightly. In 1841, the population of Blackpool was one thousand and during the summer the
population rose to three thousand, Walton, J.K. (1998). Without the availability of transport to
Blackpool tourism was only available to affluent people. This stage is the exploration phase of the
tourism area life cycle.

infinitely changing business world. In the manifesto, Rushkoff describes presentism which focuses
on the present more so than the past and even the future in relation to money and time. Rushkoff is
trying to enlighten us of the changes to the way we do business and how consumers want business
to be done. Throughout the manifesto, we get a sense of Rushkoff s opinion on our moneysystem
and how times have changed. Getting a sense on his opinion, how has Rushkoff changed his
audience s perspective on timeand money? The intended audience for this manifesto is mainly CEO
s and businessmen alike. Throughout the text, Rushkoff keeps refereeing to presentism.... Show

Why would did Rushkoff put this section where he did? I think this decision was important
because it focuses on how our currency system works and how it was originated. This section of
the text really changes how money should be perceived and how we as a society has changed.
Rushkoff evaluates the origin of our currency and basically says it s out of date. As our
economy has shifted to increasingly more digital networks, our currency has been devalued.
Rushkoff says, the money we use today central, bank issued currency is an artifact of the late
middle ages (116). While this system of currency has worked well, we need to shift to our digital
stage in order to continue functioning. The time based rules of money work quite well in an
expansionist Industrial Age, (as long as we ignore the impact on crafts people, local economies,
and, of course slave populations), but they no longer seem to function properly in a digital
economy (117). Rushkoff says that because as times change, and we switch to almost all digital
transactions, our value and use of real currency also needs to change. You can t have something
lagging behind the other in society, it doesn t work that way. And Rushkoff wants his audience to
know that. He wants these big CEO s to be warry of perhaps a major shift in the use of currency.
He wants them to know because large business corporations are what keep society

Importance Of Social Classes In A Thousand Splendid Suns
People may think that social classes may have an effect on how people are treated and what
relationships they have, others may believe it has to do with success. The way people are treated
can be based on anything from their beliefs, relationships, succeeds, and most importantly where
they belong in the social classes. It is very important what relationships you have and how others
treat you based on your class because it sets your reputation. No matter what traits you have, who
you know, where you come from, your class is very important and can play a big role in someone s
life. A person s social classcan change from being in the lower to a higher class, however it can
also change from being in the higher to lower class as well. A Thousand Splendid Suns is a novel
written by Khaled Hosseini in which ideas are being analysed between the proletariat and the
bourgeoisie, relationships, and Taliban control. There are two main types of social classes which
include the proletarians and the bourgeoisie. The novel shows who belongs to each class, why
they belong there, and the consequences they face. Both Mariam and Nana are in the lower
class, however Jalil is in the upper class. Consequences Mariam and Nana face for being in the
lower class in being kicked out of Jalil s house, shown in this quote, He cast us out of his big
fancy house like we were nothing to him (4). Consequences Jalil has for being in the upper class is
having the huge house that he has and how his success

The Natural Resources Of Canada
Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, A river is more than an amenity, it is a treasure, and there are
about 750 million peop6le who would support him on that statement. Is it fair that the people
who do not have clean water to drink, or wash with everyday must use water that is contaminated
with copper, lead, nickel and selenium? For an example, take Canada and India. Two very
different countries, from opposite sides of the world. They barely have any similarities,
especially when it comes to the amount of clean water, the purity of the water they do have, and
how those countries work towards conserving this natural resource. Although both countries are
amongst the top ten amount of renewable water available to their citizens, they highly differ
when it comes to what they do with it. Canada has got many bodies of water to get their
resources from, unlike many other countries. First of all, over seventy percent of Canada s
population lives in the Southern Part of Ontario. This means that they live very close to The
Great Lakes which provides a lot of water resources. In addition to that, Canada is surrounded by
the Pacific, Atlantic, and the Arctic Oceans and has over 243,000 km of coastline. There are
hundreds and thousands of different bodies of water around Canada. According to Statistics
Canada, all the lakes and rivers put together cover over twelve percent of Canada s surface area.
The Great Lakes have a volume of 22,684 km3 and cover a surface area of 244,160 km2.

Adult Career Counseling in a New Age Essay
Adult Career Counseling in a New Age
The changing workplace a by now familiar litany of economic, demographic, organizational, and
social changes has made ambiguity the only certainty in work life. Many adults had little or no
career education, guidance, or counseling when they were in school and often seek such help now,
making job or career changes spurred by their personal stage of development or by the postmodern
workplace. Although career development is a continuous lifelong process, media and some
scholars continue to dramatize crisis in midlife (Lea and Leibowitz 1992, p. 8). Crises and
transitions can occur at any period, however. Hoyt and Lester (1995) found that the career needs of
adults aged 18 25 are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their clients career issues are complicated by family responsibilities and work and life
experiences that color their attitudes, values, and decisions. Some may already have made the
decision to change, have a great deal of self knowledge, and need information or assistance in
coping with the new context of job search. Others may have drifted into their jobs with little
planning or guidance, have difficulty making decisions, and lack awareness of their skills, abilities,
and interests. Some may be self directed learners who just need to be pointed in the right direction;
others may want to be given the answer to their career conundrum in a structured way.
Clearly, counselors must be familiar with adult development and adult learning theories and need
varied approaches for these different types of clients. They can guide adult clients in mining their
life experiences as a source of career information. For experienced clients who already know what
they don t want, traditional resources such as the Dictionary of Occupational Titles or Occupational
Outlook Handbookmay be of little help. Washington (1993) suggests broadening their occupational
horizons by identifying the special knowledge and technical skills they already possess, using job

INSIDE APPLE ESSAY
Inside apple is a book where the author lets us discover the whole new strategic world of Apple
directed first by Steve Jobs. It introduces the original way Apple manages its company. We
learned that the business strategy model Apple is using is completely different from what we
learned in school. We ve always learned that a company has to have free flow information
contrary to Apple that faces a large secretly managerial structure. By the time you finish reading
the book, you will have a completely different idea of what you thought about apple, and you will
probably be afraid of working for that firm. The author shares with us many interviews he has done
to Apple employees and they help you discover how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the main ideologies the book explains about Steve Jobs is that he created something not
with the thought of earning revenues, but to create history. I do not think I agree with that,
because even though a business is created to cover society s needs, the main goal of a company
or business is always to create revenues to its stakeholders. That is one Steve s idea I would not
follow if I had to make a decision within my company.
I liked the idea of Steve Jobs repeating things to his employees because it transmits the exact
idea he wants them to know. I believe it is a great way to have everything under your control. At
Apple there s never confusion as to who is responsible for what because the company owns a
great information flow about the individual responsibilities. He does the same thing with his
customers, taking an example from the book, in 2000, when he launched the new iPod, the
person responsible to talk to media used to repeat many times 1,000 songs in your pocket , slogan
used to promote the first generation of iPod s large storage capacity and compact design. The
company was known for always repeating what it is important, and in every interview they had,
they always repeated the main idea they wanted the customer to know, in order for him not to be
confused with many information flowing among

Feral Children Case Study
I recall hearing an interesting story about a young child a while back, who was raised by wolves
and behaved much like them. Feral children are the result of years of neglect and isolation. They
are children who have been raised away from society in harsh and solitary conditions. These
children are for the most part always mentally and socially underdeveloped. To understand feral
children, one should examine how they respond to isolation, how they react to integration, and if
they are able to acquire the skills they lost while being deprived of social interaction. Before we
can examine the behavior of these children, we need to determine the root cause of this
transgression. Growing up, these kids have very limited contact with other people,... Show more

In the case of children raised by animals, they at least do learn some skills that can be helpful
towards their survival. A child raised in complete isolation however, will lack drastically more
social and physical skills. These children may not show any levels of intelligence. A case of this
type of isolation was that of a child named Anna, who was born in 1932 in Pennsylvania. Anna
was raised in solitude ever since her mother was unsuccessful in giving her away. For about 6
years, Anna was in total isolation and was barely given enough food to keep her alive. She was
completely alone, and did not get to interact with anybody else during the time she was being
kept, locked away in a dark room. Considering the fact that this was happening during an
important stage in the developmental process, it had a great impact on Anna s cognitive ability.
Once she was found, she was in a very bad state both physically and mentally. She was suffering
from malnutrition as well as her muscles showed signs of atrophy. She was immobile,
expressionless and indifferent to everything, (Davis 1). Atrophy is a condition in which the muscle
and tissue rot away, meaning that Anna was very diseased and living in terrible conditions. She
also didn t react to anything around her or any type of stimuli, revealing that her cognition was
very slow, and something was wrong with her mentally. She eventually began to learn how to
speak, but still never fully became a member of society, and died in

Plato s Republic, And His Sun Analogy
In this essay I will attempt to illustrate the role of the Form of the Good in regards to other Forms
and knowledge as the highest form, and a unifying force. Particular emphasis will be placed on
Socrates discussion of it in The Republic, and his sun analogy. I will argue that its epistemological
role is perhaps most convincing, as the other two fall to a number of criticisms. Other criticisms
will be offered, including how vague the theory is, and those offered by Aristotlein particular. The
Form of the Good is notoriously ambiguous, in that it is difficult to pin down precisely what it is.
In Platos Republic, through the character of Socrates, we see an attempt to describe what the
Form of the Good is, or, at the very least, some general idea of its nature. After stating that
philosophers make the best rulers to his interlocutor, Glaucon, he establishes the way to
distinguish philosophers from non philosophers. Philosophers can pick out non sensible
properties of a Form (eg beauty), as opposed to the non sensible particulars of a thing (such as a
beautiful vase). However, Socrates makes it clear that the most important thing for a philosopher
king is the knowledge of the Form of the Good. While there are many other Forms, the Good is
ultimately superlative in that it is the highest or most superior. Socrates states that it has three key
roles. An:
Ontological role: all other things become useful and advantageous only by their use of the Form of
the Good

Organizational Behavior And Its Effect On Work Performance...
1.INTRODUCTION In a period when commerce is constantly changing at a growing pace, the
need for firms to adapt to or even influence this evolution is at an all time high. That is, businesses
must learn to engage in a continuous renewal of themselves while maintaining their structural
integrity (Anderson, 1990 cited in Hunter, 2002). This is because people s sense of identity has
developed which, consequently, has had an effect on work performance. Further, managing
individuals with different identities is made more complex by the increase in diversity or the
demand for it in organizations due to globalization and rising social awareness. It is, therefore,
becoming increasingly important for corporate leaders to have a good grasp of organizational
behavior and use it to their company s advantage. 2.STRUCTURE 2.1.Restructuring at CondГ©
Nast Within any organization, the formal division, grouping and coordination of job tasks,
otherwise known as its structure, must complement its goals and objectives to move forward
effectively (Robbins and Judge, 2013; Mullins, 2016). For instance, publishing company CondГ©
Nast, well known for its brands such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Glamour, Brides, Self, GQ, The New
Yorker, Teen Vogue etc. (CondГ© Nast, n.d.a), is currently undergoing a restructuring phase. As
society advances towards a more digital age, the publishing industry must become familiar with the

Barnum Stereotypes
Joice Heth was a slave who Barnum claimed to be 161 years old and took care of President
George Washington when he was an infant. This, of course, was a hoax, but he displayed the

the woman was incredibly old and dying; he wanted to get as much money out of her as
possible. When ticket sales began to drop Barnum wote anonymously to the local paper and
claimed that Heth was a robot and he was a ventriloquist. Making her work against her will was

excepted and appropriate to misrepresent, a norm that continues on well into today. He took no
shame in his dishonest and perfidious methods to publicize his museum and shows. Barnum
allowed his suckers to see how they were being deceived showing that he reinvented the way
Americans decided to advertise their products. Instead of his museum being good enough on its

What Makes a Hero
English 1B
17 March 2011
What Makes A Hero What makes a hero? Saving a puppy from a burning building? Or what about
being a single mother raising three kids and working two jobs? Both of these could be good
candidates for heroes since they both possess the characteristic of strength not just physical
strength, but mental strength. This is one of the most important traits of a hero but it is not the only
one. Courage, intelligence, and morality are also necessary in order to really get penciled in to
the hero category. Being a hero also means doing what s right almost all the time, even when no
one is looking. So that guy who just happened to be in the right place at the right time gets the

Mass Service Customization Creates Opportunities For Firms...
Mass service customization creates opportunities for firms to provide products and services to serve
unique customer needs while maintaining the efficiency of near mass production (Jiao, Ma, Tseng,
2003). With mass production, economies of scale are generated with the continuous production of
similar, standardized products; however, a consequence of mass production is the limitation of
customerchoice. No longer are customers satisfied with mass production, customers want tailored
products individualized to their demands. Mass customization is an opportunity to accentuate the
differences or uniqueness of services to appeal to specific customers. Therefore, firms companies
that create mass individualized services are more able to give each customer what they want, when
they want it. Mass customization of service requires an awareness to meet the unpredictable
variation each customer demands. Consequently, critical factors of flexibility, variety, and
timeliness are essential with mass service customization (Peters Saidin, 2000). Firms that offer
customized services must also design its products with flexibility in mind. Design flexibility allows
for easier variations, modification, or adaptations to the meet the specificity of each customer. With
lean manufacturing and smart factories, firms have a greater flexibility to modify, create, and
assemble unique services for customers (Daft, 2016). In offering and differentiating customized
services, a firm must

  • 2. The Wisdom Of Whores-Bureaucrats Chapter Summary Elizabeth Pisani s The Wisdom of Whores Bureaucrats, Brothels and the Business of AIDS is a great book (along with a great website). Elizabeth Pisani is an epidemiologist with years of experience working on HIV/AIDS (or sex and drugs, as she puts, which sounds a lot, well, sexier) at a variety of agencies, including UNAIDS. The book is the story of her frustrations at the way the international community, national governments, NGOS and AIDSactivists have dealt with the epidemics, as well as her hopes in some of the progress made. To me, precisely because the book is data driven, it was not controversial. My reaction was more, well, if that s what the data show, so be it. But also, I think, the book was billed as controversial... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The writer on the contrary points out that the initiatives have not achieved the required target because some of them advocate for things which are not practical. Instead, she proposes that emphasis should be laid on educating people about safe sex and not trying to restrict and control individual liberty supposedly for the greater good. She believes the disease is not about poverty and gender related issues, it is behavior change. Many people in African countries get the virus because of having unsafe sex with multiple partners. This is why the rates of infection are not declining despite the billions being spent. The honesty box tries to bring out hidden facts behind the myths told by various researchers concerning HIV/AIDS. Some of these myths are based on the data presented which are usually inflated to favor funding and to act as a precautionary measure that AIDS exists everywhere. The book opens the honesty box on drawbacks of medical research within the tropics. Pisani tackles highly contentious issues with zest, including the possible public health shortcoming of antiretroviral treatment, in addition to the benefits of mandatory HIV/AIDS testing. The author also presents data to show that if couples living in Thailand were to have further premarital sex, then their men would be the least likely to use commercial sex workers and the ... • 3. The City That Become Safe In this paper I will discuss and explain anatomy of a crime decline in New York City as well as if in these days can we say that the city is safe. Purpose of this book The City That Become Safe written by Franklin E. Zimring is to show us how crime rate changed during 1990 to 2009. According to author this book presents a detailed profile of New York Citycrimeover 20 years period. Book provides the vital statistics of the crime drop by type of crime, by borough, and by year. There are two reasons that such exhaustive detail is required as a beginning to the study. First, the size and the length of the drop are without precedent in the recorded history of American urban crime. The second reason that the details of the crime decline are needed is as a road map for explaining what changes in the city and its government might have caused this epic decline. The more we know about the specific character of the decline when it happened, where it happened, which offenses the better our capacity for sorting through different theories of what caused the drop. In addition, shifts the focus from the two decades of the decline to an assessment of current conditions in the city. How safe is New York City?. The mission of this book is to provide a statistical profile of the notable crime decline that started in New York City in the early 1990s and has further well past the of a new century. The first portion of analysis will focus on three important features of the official ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Phoenicia Downfall The Phoenicians were a group of people who thrived on the western side of the Fertile Crescent. They first originated from Bahrain. They were the most wealthy and powerful traders in 1100 B.C. Their first cities were next to the Mediterranean Sea in the area of Lebanon. Although the Phoenicians did not control a grand empire, they were able to become rich through trade. Eventually, they were able to spread their area all around the Mediterranean Sea. The Phoenicians started their road to riches in a funny way. Around one of their cities on an island called Tyre, tons of snails from the ocean were swept onshore by the ocean waves. The Phoenicians tried to make use of these snails, and they discovered they could indeed make use of these snails. By squeezing the poor snails, the Phoenicians could extract a very rich purple dye. This production of purple dye led them to be called the purple people. However, the process was slow and tiring, as making only one pound of this dye required the squeezing of 600,000 different snails. However, this dye was worth making, as it was able to be sold for extremely high prices. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since God commanded it, even if I had a hundred fathers and mothers, even if I had been a King s daughter, I would have gone nevertheless. (Joan of Arc) Joan of Arc once said after she had gotten the call to follow God. Joan of Arc was and still is an inspiration to everyone. By her early life she is recodnized, end of life, and by how she influences the world today. Joan of Arcwas a great leader and woman. Jeanne d Arc, or Joan of Arc in English, was born in 1412 in DomrГ©my, France while they were at war with England. Of a poor farmer named Jacques d Arc she was the daughter and her mother Isabelle or RomГ©e. Her mother taught her how to work at home and on the farm. About God and the Catholic Church she only ever learned. When she hit the age of thirteen, she started hearing voices and having visions. In a few of her visions were SaintMichaeland Saint Catherine. To help fight for France against the English she believed that they were all telling her. At sixteen years of age, she was forced into a marriage by her father after taking a vow of chastity, so she went to the court and they said that she would not be compelled to marry. Joan of Arc was an extremely stubborn and strong willed woman from an early age who would do what she thought was right and what needed to be done. • 6. Burial Customs In America Essay According to an article submitted to the Berkeley Planning Journal, approximately 800,000 gallons of formaldehyde is buried in the United States every year. To put the amount of this hazardous chemical that Americans use to bury their people in perspective, it is enough to fill one and a quarter Olympic sized swimming pools each year (Calderone). Unfortunately, this is only one of the many issues that is hurting the environment and has arised from modern burials. Because of the negative environmental effects that modern burial customs are causing, Americans should switch back to natural burials in order to decrease the impact that modern burial practices have left on Earth. In antebellum America, burial customs were onced a personal family issue. As custom, the families of early Americans were expected to wash and dress their loved ones in family parlors and would... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Up until the Civil War, Gary Laderman, the Professor of American Religious History and Cultures at Emory University, explains that, ...most Americans had no knowledge of the [preserving] procedure and abhorred any unnatural intervention of the body. But during and after the Civil War, families needed to delay the natural decaying process in order to have sufficient time to identify their loved ones who lost their lives during the war.. Because transportation in the mid 1800 s is nowhere near as good as modern transportation, families had to wait several days, even weeks, to receive the body of their loved one. Therefore, the Civil War was responsible for the emergence of the embalming process in the United States. In the 1850 s, Dr. Thomas Holmes had experimented with the French method of arterial embalming and soon created his own embalming fluid to which he was then hired to embalm the corpses of dead Union officers (Kelly). As a result of the growing popularity of embalming, Laderman explains that the number of undertakers was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. High School Dropout Rates And Teen Pregnancy High School dropout rates have been a problem since the word high school became a term. To begin, a study researched by Education Week, Rumberger interprets ...The nation s leading education periodical estimates that 1.3 million students from the high school class of 2010 failed to graduate (Rumberger 61). Taking those findings you can go a step further and narrow the field to one of the causes of dropoutrates, which is teen pregnancy. By focusing on teen pregnancy your able to narrow down the field of research and solve one problem at a time. According to Rumberger ...68 percent of young women who had a child by age eighteen had completed high schoolby age twenty two compared to 94 percent of young women who did not experience a teen birth (1294). These numbers can translate into discovering solutions to fix the dropout rates of pregnant teenagers. Discovering the needs of pregnant teenagers and teen mothers will lead to an understanding evolving into solutions to prevent pregnant teens from dropping out of high school. Allowing for the increase of female graduates. Fixing one problem of high school dropouts allows for other possibilities in other areas. Therefore, by developing after school programs with counseling, along with programs to prepare for the future and to provide child care services for single mothers the numbers will increase of students finishing high school. Major Luxon met with Mr. and Mrs. Luxon for about an hour. Mr. Rowland then asked the Major to follow him. Major Luxon shrugged and thought, why not? The two men headed out to one of the many barns on the property. Mr. Rowland swung open one of the doors, You think this will help you? Mr. Rowland asked MajorLuxon. The barn was filled from top to bottom with wheat and corn. We had a bumper crop this year and it seems to be all going to waste, Mr. Rowland told the Major. The mormon prophet and founder Joseph Smith found golden plates that introduced a previously unknown third section of the bible. However, Mormonism receives a heavy amount of criticism due to the fact that Smith told his disciples that only he could see the plates, consequently, there is no proof of the plates existence. The religion itself is founded upon the experiential aspect of religion. The founder of the religion, Joseph Smith, was visited by an angel named Moroni and told of the location of golden plates and two stones; these plates were previously unknown teachings of god written in a language... This report will highlight the evaluation that was done to justify the opening of a food pantry on campus. The report covers the initial proactive evaluation, the clarifying evaluation, an interactive evaluation, and a monitoring evaluation. Proactive Evaluation The purpose of the proactive evaluation is to find out if there is a hunger issue at the University of Kansas. Maslow identified needs that must be built upon for development to occur. These needs are physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self actualization (Maslow, 1943). Physiological needs include access to food, water, shelter, sex, and breathing. If students do not have access to food, then their basic needs are not being met. If their basic needs are not being met, then they will have difficulty reaching esteem and self actualization. This is an issue because higher education serves as a tool for students to gain experience in the realm of self actualization (problem solving, creativity, and morality). Other institutions are having issues with hunger on their campuses. The University of California Los Angeles has a small food pantry on campus. The food is donated and students can take what they need (NPR). The University of Missouri has a student run food pantry close to campus. This pantry allows students, faculty, and staff to take food once a month. It does not require proof of need (Mizzou). Colorado State University is looking to have a food pantry on campus, but the administration is wanting more support from the student population (CSU Article). • 15. Essay on The Power of Money in Campaign Finance It may seem that with the Buckley decision, soft money and PACs the hope for reform has been lost, however there is still hope. The Supreme Court upheld the voluntary public financing of presidential election, which was considered a great step forward because taking public funds requires the candidate to limit their spending on the federal level. There is also the hard money in political campaigns, which is strictly regulated by law through the Federal Election Commission. Hard money is the contrast to soft money meaning that it is the contributions made by a person or PAC that gives to a federal campaign or political party for the use in federal elections. But of course with one step forward there is always two steps back. Because of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, all means of legal cheating had been justified. PACs and overly wealthy individuals are not the only ones dipping their hands in the secretly jumbled world of campaign finance. Smaller interest groups and lobbyists are also getting their favors and paychecks. Because election laws are so crammed with exceptions these different groups can directly and openly support a candidate spending as much money as they would like. This loophole is referred to as independent expenditures. The Supreme Court cleared the way for smaller groups to work directly for or against a candidate, so long as the group does not coordinate its efforts with the candidate it supports. Although these expenditures tend to be a just a bit smaller then soft money funds, they are far more straightforward and blunt which proves to be even more effective (Anderson 2000). In my view, campaign finance has gone from something that could potentially help give the power of government back to the people to a complete joke. When trying to answer the questions of campaign finance you get a series of hidden meanings, jumbled definitions and no real answer to you questions, which is exactly the way Washington and campaign workers like it. The more bizarre and convoluted the rules are the more money each campaign can make. In a declining airline industry, it is vital for SkyWest to lower its risk. The second area which demands attention is operational efficiency. SkyWest Airlines has been above average with benchmarks like cost per seat mile, airplane turnaround, etc. but ASA has been well below average. In order to retain customers SkyWest must improve operational efficiency. The final strategic issue is customer service. Ever since the beginning of time humans have only cared about themselves and now that greed is destroying our planet. When you are without spot, you re not only a figure for admiration, but also a focus for jealousy and hatred; and in no distant time, so many unwanted notes would be filed against you. Victorian suburban planners and developers built using two types of plans; that of a Victorian semi detached house, a modern day duplex, and Villas for the upper class (Brown, 2004). While the suburbs continue to grow around the world, the major development in suburban living took place in the United States following the Second World War (Galyean, 2012). Levi Strauss Levi Strauss at Home and Abroad As one attempts to assess the business ethics of Levi Strauss and Nike in this writing assignment, we are again compelled to revisit the critical distinction of conduct that is legal, yet still unethical. In both instances, Levi Strauss and Nike behaved with the parameters of legal conduct, yet few would argue that profiting from exploitive work conditions is an ethical behavior of any socially responsible organization (broad view social responsibility). Obviously, it s very tempting to just condense this argument to the point of bad companies boosting profits from lower labor costs via exploiting foreign workers in sweatshops . The end result of this ruling is that corporations that profit greatly from outsourced labor are now able to pay for the elections of our Congressmen and gee, wonder how this economic favor will be repaid when attempts to rein in outsourcing come up in Congress? Let s move on to our two protagonists in this debate: Levi Strauss and Nike. Now that we ve got the backdrop well in hand, and a reasonable person would agree that a massive systemic failure in the U.S. has allowed and promoted unchecked outsourcing of jobs, it s time to discuss these two corporate giants and their respective behaviors here. Do these two corporations have a responsibility to monitor the conduct of the companies they do business with in particular, their contractors and suppliers? As a personal believer in the broader view of corporate social responsibility, I believe that they do. Notwithstanding the fact that all of this outsourcing is legal, and despite the mitigating factors that I ve argued above that do alleviate these two companies of all of the blame I still believe that they need to take the higher moral ground. For the reason that many citizens are not well informed with the effects of smoking, the United States has a high death rate per year. Smoking can cause imminent health issues to all who choose to smoke. Lung cancer, asthma, heart attacks, and lung diseases are some of the results from smoking. Many do not take this in account of when attracted to smoking. For this reason, it is unethical for authorities to not fully illegalize smoking in public. Various factors played a role in the growth in popularity for visiting Blackpool. The popularity of Blackpool will be compared to the gradual decline of the destination. The destination will then be analysed to see if the area is contributing enough facilities for the rejuvenation of Blackpool. Butler s TourismArea Lifecycle will be used to determine if the area of Blackpool has successfully rejuvenated the area to attract tourists. Blackpool first reached popularity throughout the eighteenth century. Serval factors resulted in the expansion of tourism in Blackpool. I think this decision was important because it focuses on how our currency system works and how it was originated. This section of the text really changes how money should be perceived and how we as a society has changed. Rushkoff evaluates the origin of our currency and basically says it s out of date. As our economy has shifted to increasingly more digital networks, our currency has been devalued. Rushkoff says, the money we use today central, bank issued currency is an artifact of the late middle ages (116). While this system of currency has worked well, we need to shift to our digital stage in order to continue functioning. The time based rules of money work quite well in an expansionist Industrial Age, (as long as we ignore the impact on crafts people, local economies, and, of course slave populations), but they no longer seem to function properly in a digital economy (117). Rushkoff says that because as times change, and we switch to almost all digital transactions, our value and use of real currency also needs to change. You can t have something lagging behind the other in society, it doesn t work that way. And Rushkoff wants his audience to know that. For an example, take Canada and India. Two very different countries, from opposite sides of the world. They barely have any similarities, especially when it comes to the amount of clean water, the purity of the water they do have, and how those countries work towards conserving this natural resource. Although both countries are amongst the top ten amount of renewable water available to their citizens, they highly differ when it comes to what they do with it. I will argue that its epistemological role is perhaps most convincing, as the other two fall to a number of criticisms. Other criticisms will be offered, including how vague the theory is, and those offered by Aristotlein particular. The Form of the Good is notoriously ambiguous, in that it is difficult to pin down precisely what it is. In Platos Republic, through the character of Socrates, we see an attempt to describe what the Form of the Good is, or, at the very least, some general idea of its nature. After stating that philosophers make the best rulers to his interlocutor, Glaucon, he establishes the way to distinguish philosophers from non philosophers. Philosophers can pick out non sensible properties of a Form (eg beauty), as opposed to the non sensible particulars of a thing (such as a beautiful vase). However, Socrates makes it clear that the most important thing for a philosopher king is the knowledge of the Form of the Good. While there are many other Forms, the Good is ultimately superlative in that it is the highest or most superior. Socrates states that it has three key roles. An: Ontological role: all other things become useful and advantageous only by their use of the Form of the Good ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Organizational Behavior And Its Effect On Work Performance... 1.INTRODUCTION In a period when commerce is constantly changing at a growing pace, the need for firms to adapt to or even influence this evolution is at an all time high. That is, businesses must learn to engage in a continuous renewal of themselves while maintaining their structural integrity (Anderson, 1990 cited in Hunter, 2002). This is because people s sense of identity has developed which, consequently, has had an effect on work performance. Further, managing individuals with different identities is made more complex by the increase in diversity or the demand for it in organizations due to globalization and rising social awareness. It is, therefore, becoming increasingly important for corporate leaders to have a good grasp of organizational behavior and use it to their company s advantage. 2.STRUCTURE 2.1.Restructuring at CondГ© Nast Within any organization, the formal division, grouping and coordination of job tasks, otherwise known as its structure, must complement its goals and objectives to move forward effectively (Robbins and Judge, 2013; Mullins, 2016). For instance, publishing company CondГ© Nast, well known for its brands such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Glamour, Brides, Self, GQ, The New Yorker, Teen Vogue etc. (CondГ© Nast, n.d.a), is currently undergoing a restructuring phase. As society advances towards a more digital age, the publishing industry must become familiar with the utilization of electronic media to complement their printed ones (Tarkiainen et al, ... • 51. Barnum Stereotypes Joice Heth was a slave who Barnum claimed to be 161 years old and took care of President George Washington when he was an infant. This, of course, was a hoax, but he displayed the tired old woman before the public and she had no choice but to submit. Barnum didn t care that the woman was incredibly old and dying; he wanted to get as much money out of her as possible. When ticket sales began to drop Barnum wote anonymously to the local paper and claimed that Heth was a robot and he was a ventriloquist. Making her work against her will was one thing, but to publicly shame her by stating that she was just a robot brought it to an entirely different level. His sole purpose was to make money. Instead of being honest and open, he was deceptive, and he tried to trick people into giving him their money. It s good business became the excuse for deception showing just how little Barnum s integrity mattered to him. Barnum is responsible for a habit of gross misrepresentation that expands to much of twentieth century advertising. He created a media culture where it was excepted and appropriate to misrepresent, a norm that continues on well into today. He took no shame in his dishonest and perfidious methods to publicize his museum and shows. Barnum allowed his suckers to see how they were being deceived showing that he reinvented the way Americans decided to advertise their products. Instead of his museum being good enough on its own to accurately publicize itself, Barnum felt that he need to lie in order to gain customers, something the greatest showman would not have to do. • 52. What Makes a Hero English 1B 17 March 2011 What Makes A Hero What makes a hero? Saving a puppy from a burning building? Or what about being a single mother raising three kids and working two jobs? Both of these could be good candidates for heroes since they both possess the characteristic of strength not just physical strength, but mental strength. This is one of the most important traits of a hero but it is not the only one. Courage, intelligence, and morality are also necessary in order to really get penciled in to the hero category. Being a hero also means doing what s right almost all the time, even when no one is looking. So that guy who just happened to be in the right place at the right time gets the rubber end while the hard working mother who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, Nora seems to be a hardworking woman when she has to be, however her doll like life has never had severe consequences and at the first sign it might, she flees. She flees after a heated argument with Torvald at night, not even giving it a night s rest to really think about her decision further and consider other options. When Torvald askes her what about the children, she tells Torvald: I have another duty equally sacred...my duty to myself (Isben, 1076). It is one of the worst things a mother could do to leave her children without a caretaker, even if she was not much of one to begin with. Nora shows a lack of courage by not sticking it out since a true hero would have stayed and tried to work something out that would not be so damaging to the family. Unlike Nora, a character who actually sacrifices herself for her family throughout the story is Mama, from A Raisin in the Sun, a play by Lorraine Hansberry. From the beginning, it is apparent that Mama is the type of woman who dedicates her time to taking care of her children and grandchild. This self sacrificing woman only wants the best for her family however the oppression of the ghetto threatens to tear them apart. Mama decides to purchase a home in an all white community with a portion of her deceased husband s life insurance policy in an attempt for a fresh ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. Mass Service Customization Creates Opportunities For Firms... Mass service customization creates opportunities for firms to provide products and services to serve unique customer needs while maintaining the efficiency of near mass production (Jiao, Ma, Tseng, 2003). With mass production, economies of scale are generated with the continuous production of similar, standardized products; however, a consequence of mass production is the limitation of customerchoice. No longer are customers satisfied with mass production, customers want tailored products individualized to their demands. Mass customization is an opportunity to accentuate the differences or uniqueness of services to appeal to specific customers. Therefore, firms companies that create mass individualized services are more able to give each customer what they want, when they want it. Mass customization of service requires an awareness to meet the unpredictable variation each customer demands. Consequently, critical factors of flexibility, variety, and timeliness are essential with mass service customization (Peters Saidin, 2000). Firms that offer customized services must also design its products with flexibility in mind. Design flexibility allows for easier variations, modification, or adaptations to the meet the specificity of each customer. With lean manufacturing and smart factories, firms have a greater flexibility to modify, create, and assemble unique services for customers (Daft, 2016). In offering and differentiating customized services, a firm must ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
