Co Operative Education And Traditional Education
Unlike other subjects that may require work and effort to understand, people tend to think they know
what education is. It is familiar topic: a word in the daily use. It s all around us. We go to college or
university to get educated. We entrust our children to schools in the belief that they will become
knowledgeable and skilled (Wood 11). Evidently, education is a long term process, which almost all
people must experience in life. So that, the choices associated with major, future job or kind of
programs are controversial problems in general public, especially the issue of whether or not Co
operative (Co op) education is better than traditional (Non Co op) programs. Additionally, it is also
implied that Co operative program is known as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As evidence of this, according to Learning to Learn, College teachers have expressed frustration about
attendance in class, uncompleted reading assignments, and student focus on grades rather than
learning. Student surveys indicate that courses are not interesting, that students fail to recognize the
value of what they are learning, and that many faculty rely too heavily on lectures for transmitting
information (Wirth and Perkins 2 3). Moreover, the rote learning style, which is the memorization of
information based on repetition, though might not understand basic content deeply or may
immediately forget the facts they have learned after the test is the harmful disease that so many
students are struggling. Contrary to conventional education programs, it is implied that Evidently,
enabling students to experience the more theoretical world of school in tandem with the more practical
world of work has the potential of increasing some of the positive outcomes of education (Jeela 2). In
other words, due to integrated learning model of co op educational structure, the student can review
knowledge what is gained in class more effective than studying what were taken note. It is true that
beside classroom lectures, Co op program allows students to work at the company to get credit. This is
mandatory if the learners choose the curriculum with Co op course, the period will be interspersed
with durations of student lectures. Moreover,

The Importance of Children s Play
The importance of play in young children cannot be stressed enough. It has be shown numerous times
through research the benefits that play can have. When you think of children playing it brings a smile
to your face. The importance of play definitely plays a big role in a child s life especially between the
ages of 5 to 7. What does play mean? There are many different types of definitions because everyone
plays differently. Play engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical
purpose (Oxford Dictionary). The focus on what types of specific toys and games that will help not
only with socialization, but with cognitive and social learning skills. These types of skills are what
children need to excel and improve in multiple areas of life. What will be defined is what types of play
children between the ages 5 to 7 should participate in.
Let s start at the beginning when a baby is born, the brain is like a sculpture waiting to be molded. It
has been known that a child s brain develops very quickly in the early years of its life. There are all
different types of play whether it is set up or free play it definitely ensures that one s child will get a
wide variety of experiences. Children can almost play with anything o0r anywhere, its almost as play
is a child s work, play is important (McNamee Anderson, 2010).
Some types of play that children should be participating in during the ages of 5 to 7 are onlooker play,

Essay about Air Pollution in Birmingham, Alabama
Air pollution continues to be a significant problem in the city of Birmingham, as it has been for
decades. No one enjoys walking the streets of Birmingham only to taste or smell the smoke and
particulates in the air, not to mention the damaging effects to one s health. Fortunately, improvements
have been made; forty years ago, residents of Birmingham could not even see the skyline due to the
immense amounts of particulates in the air, but now the skyline is visible on a daily basis. The
noticeable improvement indicates the progress that has been made over the years, but there is still
plenty of room for much needed improvement. Birmingham s air quality is among some of the worst
in the United States, but there are several feasible and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For decades, the air quality in Birmingham did not meet EPA criteria, but crossed the threshold this
year. This achievement demonstrates the prominent progress made by the industries and residents to
improve air quality.
Although much improvement has been made, there is still more to be done. Spencer states that In
2011, the American Lung Association ranked Birmingham the eight worst city in the nation for
particle pollution, or soot (An Old Cloud of Polluted Air Lifts from Birmingham s Shoulders).
Birmingham s attempts at improving air quality have been valuable, but the air in Birmingham is still
dirty when compared to other industrial cities. Pollution continues to pose an enormous threat to
residents of urban cities worldwide. In the August 2008 Monthly Update, it is stated that
approximately 800,000 deaths each year can be attributed to outdoor air pollution, making pollution
the single most harmful environmental hazard to human health in urban areas (Kallman). The fact that
pollution kills hundreds of thousands of people each year alone portrays just how dangerous living in
these conditions can be. Kallman writes about a study which proves an increase in upper respiratory
diseases, cardiovascular mortality, respiratory mortality, and low birth weights when exposed to air
pollutants (August 2008: Monthly Update). These can be very serious diseases and complications
which, when contracted, can lead to death or very serious illnesses. There

Essay Miracles
Miracles From the Latin word miraculum meaning object of wonder enters the word miracle. Many
definitions have been formed for the notion of a miracle but most would agree that it is most
commonly an unexplainable extraordinary event, inspiring awe and wonder unto its witnesses. Similar
definitions state that it is a supernatural event, contrary to the established constitution and course of
things or a deviation from the known laws of nature .
The term a priori refers primarily to the basis on which a proposition is known. If a statement has been

However, Hume s second argument puts forward, why many people will support a miracle claim, the
passion of surprise and wonder, arising from miracles being an agreeable emotion gives a sensible
tendency towards the belief of those events from which it is derived. Furthermore, Hume explains that
even those who did not enjoy that pleasure first hand yet love to partake of the satisfaction .... And
place a pride and delight in exciting the admiration of others. Hume s statement suggests many people
will have a natural tendency to suspend their reasoning when testifying to a miracle because of the
emotional effect it has on them.
Hume describes natural laws as having been established by firm and unalterable experience . What is
thought to be a miracle may be in fact a part of the world and part of the laws that we do not fully
understand yet.
Derived from the scientific understanding of the 18th century and the world, natural law was meant to
reflect the perfection of God, therefore it could not be broken. Conversely similar to miracles natural
law is left open to interpretation. Locke suggested that trust

Olanzapine
The adverse effects of drug drug interactions in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder can
be severe and depends mainly on the pharmacokinetic properties of the drug. Both the distances
between drug targets and the comparison of target neighbors are important when when administering
olanzapine in combination with other drugs due to its effects on the CNS. To avoid severe adverse
effects such as sedation, orthostatic hypotension, tachycardia or transaminase the prescribing drugs in
combination such as olanzapine with fluvoxamine or diazepam should be therapeutically monitored
while drugs such as sertraline will not cause adverse effects. (Spina, E., de Leon, J., (2007)). To

Olanzapine is associated with adverse effects when taken above the safe therapeutic range between 20
to 40 ng/ml, symptoms of toxicity include depression, tachycardia and hyperpryexia,, the effects of
these symptoms are normally more severe in children.. Olanzapine is considered to have a low
mortality rate although serious cases of olanzapine toxicity can lead to possible death. In postmortem
examinations olanzapine is not normally the main cause of death, but is a contributing factor therefore
the involvement of other drugs need to be considered. Early detection of toxicity is vital although
activated charcoal has previously been beneficial in the treatment for an overdose of olanzapine
(Chue, P., Singer, P., (2003)). The use of Olanzapine is contraindicated in patients with diseases such
as dementia or diabetes mellitus. Caution should also be taken when administering olanzapine to
patients with cardiac defects, liver problems and patients with a history of seizures. If allergic to any
of the ingredients within the drug or if the individual is pregnant it should also not be administered.
The dosage of the drug may need to be altered if the individual smokes and the consumption of

Environmental Pollution And Its Effects On The Environment
Environmental pollution is one of the biggest problems the world faces today. Pollution troubles
humans economically, physically, and everyday of our lives. The outbreak of diseases is linked to the
contamination of the environment; however, most people do not know about this problem. This fact
shows that increasing environmental pollution needs to be taken care of a soon as possible, not only
for the good of the environment, but also for the people that live in it. Although environmental
pollution can be caused by natural events such as forest fires and active volcanoes, use of the word
pollution generally implies that the contaminants have an anthropogenic source that is, a source
created by human activities ( Pollution. ). Many factors explain why environmental pollution has
become such a large issue in the world. Air and water pollution has been caused by the burning of
fossil fuels. Most of the rivers are polluted and ninety percent of urban water bodies are polluted. Half
of china does not have access to clean water. Regulations are passed to regulate pollution, but they are
not monitored. The Chinese government deals with the punishment of pollution, it spends two
hundred billion dollars each year on pollution problems (Desonie 35). However, if the people of the
world were to act on this problem, it would definitely help both the environment and the people. There
are many activities that can be done by both the common citizen to the governments of the world,

The Democratic Party And The Republican Party
Every four years, the United States citizens elect a new president. The election is held in November,
but campaigning starts almost a whole year before the election month. Candidates compete on a daily
basis for the one position some people only dream of holding. With this election on the horizon, voters
need to take time to understand who the contenders are and what their main objects will be once they
arrive in office.
In politics today, two parties exist; the democrat party and the republican party. Out of the pair of
organizations, the democratic party remains as the world s oldest political party. It was first founded in
the year 1828 by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The Jeffersonian Republican or Democratic

They consisted of former Whig party supporters, abolitionists, and people who believed in the
modernizing of the country. Their basic belief followed the ways of conservatism. Conservatism
means that people believed in the rule of anti communism, and also believed that the American
traditions are the way the government should be ran along with Protestant values. Each party is
represented by an animal and also a color; red elephants for republicans and blue donkeys for
democrats.
When looking at the economy today, it is rather on a plateau. A few years ago, the economy was
heading in the wrong direction, but after current president Barack Obama was elected into office, he
managed to sign many bills into effect which in turn helped bring our economy back up. Illegal
immigration into the country has sky rocketed in the past ten years. The number of illegal immigrants
flowing into the country is approximately seven hundred thousand each year. Personally, I believe that
this number is entirely too high. The United States has a specific law about illegal aliens and how they
must have a piece of paper called a green card in order to live in this country as an immigrant. These
people of course are not considered citizens because they were not born in America, which is
primarily the reason behind the law. Along with these issues, I also believe that the military and our
veterans are treated with disrespect. Currently, we have been involved in

The United Kingdom European Union Membership
On 23 June 2016, The United Kingdom European Union membership referendum took place in the
UK and Gibraltar. The result was decided by 33,577,342 eligible voters. 17,410,742 voters voted to
leave the European Union; 16,141,241 voters voted to remain in the European Union. On 24 June
2016, Jenny Watson, the Chief Counting Officer, announced the final result of the referendum leave.
This was a breaking news, and it caused a global attention. Countless information and news were
reporting by social media and networking. David William Donald Cameron, Prime Minister of the
United Kingdom issued a statement in 10 Downing Street that he will resign in October, and he would
continue to service to the British public in the coming weeks and month. He hopes that the new Prime
Minister leads the UK toward a right direction under the new situation. Meanwhile, the global
economy and international currency were affected by the referendum. Global stock markets were
falling down drastically and the British Pound did drop from $1.50 to $1.35, which was the lowest
value since the 1980s. Investors also lost heavily. For example, many financial analysts think that like
Warren Buffett and other successful investors probably lost billions of dollars on average after the
vote. In April 1975, there was a similar referendum held in the UK. At that time, 67.2 percent of voters
approved that the UK ought to stay in the European Union. After forty one years, the result is

BUSINESS ETHICS

A holistic business problem with ethical implications can occur within the overall proposal process.
Timken, particularly due to its minority position within the European market, has a particular interest

operational efficiencies to better compete with its European counterparts. It is through this desire that
ethical considerations occur. As the case indicates, Rulmenti Grei provides Timken with a broader

a single provider. This is in stark contrast to the American market that prefers the niche companies

An Urban Body Of Water
An urban body of water is one that is located near an urban area, usually with high population and
industry. These water bodies are often times very polluted and mismanaged because a society benefits
by using it as their dumping grounds or local governments do not have the finances to improve it.
Many times there is a lack of awareness among a society that these acts of mass pollution are even
taking place. In this paper I will compare The Duwamish River in Seattle to Lake Nicaragua in
Nicaragua. It does not matter where an urban body of water is located in the world; if a city, industry

Love at First Sight
December 18, 2006 Today wasn t as bad as I thought it would be. Transferring my senior of high

changing. It was all changing as quickly, and all I wanted it to do was to slow down. Slow down to
where I played in the backyard, and didn t have a care in the world. Today as I started a new school all
I kept thinking was how much I hated this, and that no one was going to be my friend because I was
the new girl . Something happened today, and it wasn t anything I was expecting. As I walked down
these unknown hallways trying to figure out where my class was, someone came running down the
hallway, and smacked right into me. I dropped my books, and when I looked right into his eyes, my
heart started to melt. I never thought I would be one of those girls who believed in love at first site, but

Air Driven Engine Project Report
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
At first glance the idea of running an engine on air seems to be too good to be true. Actually, if we can
make use of air as an aid for running an engine it is a fantastic idea. As we all know, air is all around
us, it never runs out, it is non polluting and it is free.
An Air Driven Engine makes use of Compressed Air Technology for its operation. Compressed Air
Technology is now widely preferred for research by different industries for developing different drives
for different purposes. The Compressed Air Technology is quite simple. If we compress normal air
into a cylinder the air would hold some energy within it. This energy can be utilized for useful
purposes. When this compressed air expands, the energy is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Fig. 2.1 working of two stroke engine
There are no traditional valves in a two stroke engine. In a two stroke the engines fires once every
revolution. This makes the engine highly efficient and lightweight compared to four stroke systems.
Rather than entering through valves, the fuel/air mixture enters through an intake port and exhaust
exits out of an exhaust port. In place of traditional valves the two stroke engine uses the piston s
position to force out exhaust or suck in fuel mixture.
Reeds are vital to a two stroke system. The reeds are placed between the intake manifold and the
carburetor, open and close to allow the fuel / air mixture to enter the case of the engine and trap it, and
ensure the proper exchange of gasses in the engine. This procedure might sound complex, but it is, in
fact, extremely effective and easy to understand.
The whole cycle can be explained as follows:
1) As the piston moves from bottom dead center to top dead center it creates a vaccum to draw the fuel
/ air mixture through the carburetor and past the reed valve assembly.
2) The piston moves down from top dead center to bottom dead center. The reed closes, causing the
pressure to build in the cylinder. The movement of the piston uncovers the intake port and pressurized
the fuel / air mixture.
3) The piston now moves up from bottom dead center to top dead center, effectively ending a cycle
and starting another. The spark plug

Teacher Collaboration Paper
The review of the literature shows that the concept of teacher collaboration is still ambiguous. In a
collaborative effort, different stakeholders may be present or it may be mediated by others while peer
collaboration took place among teachers with similar rank. The term collaboration is interchangeably
used with collegiality and teaming when it took place between teachers. Mutual goal and shared
understanding are important aspects of teacher collaboration. The notion refers to the teacher to
teacher interaction regarding instructional and curriculum matters, student evaluation, planning and
performing lesson together, and observing peer practice and providing feedback.

The review of existing literature and all the discussion above provoked the ideas discussed below:
1. The dominance of western research: Studies about teacher collaboration and its impact are mostly
found in developed country context specially in the US. This is probably because in the US recently
there is policy urge for team teaching (Ronfeldt, Farmer et al. 2015) which has made it an attractive
and suitable context for such studies. A few project evaluation discuss peer collaboration in
developing country context (i.e. Coffey International Development 2012) but those only looked into
the status of peer collaboration within the project capacity. 2. Studies are mostly in a setup
environment: Most of the studies around teacher collaboration took place in set up environments. The
natural collaboration among teachers is ignored in the literature. Although the studies in the US
context apparently look like natural but the urge for teaming in the policy has given the field a setup
image. Considering only the setup situation is problematic and contradict with the notion of collegial
or peer collaboration. In a setup context, teachers learn in instructional environments and the
sociocultural context goes often unanalysed. For instance Dunne, Nave et al. (2000) conducted their
study in a critical friend group which is pre planned and organised. Teachers natural spontaneous
interest and complexity of school culture went unanalysed in this study. It is

Biological Weapons Should Not Be Used During War Time
Did you know that biological weapons contain such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other
microorganisms(ncwiseowl.com). Chemicals weapons is a specialized munition that uses chemicals
formulated to inflict death or harm on humans(ncwiseowl.com). When biological weapons are in use
about 500 million people could die and when chemical weapons are in use anyone in the area could
get hurt/sick(ncwiseowl.com). So the military should not use during war time. Biological/Chemical
weapons are the type of weapons that should not be used in a time of war. When using these weapons
there capable of killing most of the people that are in the area where the weapon has been used. These
weapons are capable of killing thousand possible millions, in other word any living organism that is in
the area. There also the possibility of killing people that aren t even in the war they might just be in
the area. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The weapons could kill ¼ of the population thin the area. So the people can t do anything about the
use of the weapons because they can t control the war. The people just watch their own die or be to

get involved in a war that isn t theirs. When considering the Good side of the use of the
biological/chemical weapons, you can take out massive amount of people in one go. If you consider a
group of people a threat you can kill most without losing any of you troop or soldiers. You could use
the weapo without the other side knowing that you even used the weapon. You could also use it as a
last resort to kill of the rest of the enemy or the thing you are trying to kill.

There is no question that there are helpful and harmful attributes to elevation. The argument is
whether these effects are enough to cause an unfair advantage and are they dangerous enough to
warrant a rule to be made about it. There are many things that come into question when addressing the
affects elevation has on athletes such as: the effects of air resistance, air density, low oxygen levels,
and a weaker gravitational pull (Ward Smith). When people think of elevation most people think of in
the mountains or thousands of feet in the air. That is not the case. All of these handicaps and issues can
affect athletic events that are held in heights as low as one thousand five hundred feet. At this altitude
there is approximately 16% less oxygen in the air (Altitude). At first glance this does not seem like a
big difference but when a highly trained athlete is competing this can be the difference between a loss
or a win. Another measurement of oxygen intake at elevation is the study published in the Journal of
Applied Physiology in 1996, trained and untrained cyclists were asked to undergo a Vo2max test,
Vo2max is the rate of oxygen consumed during the exercise test, at while at sea level and again at five
hundred and eighty meters. The result: the effects were negligible in the untrained group, but in the
trained group VO2max dropped by an average of 6.8% due to a fall in arterial oxygen saturation
(Runner s Connect). If a hypothetical athlete is at one hundred

significantly recapitalize the firm s ownership structure. Ford had accumulated $23 billion in cash
reserves and under the VEP would return as much as $10 billion of this cash to shareholders. In
exchange for each share currently held, the plan would give stockholders one new share plus the
choice of receiving $20 in either cash or additional new Ford common shares. Shareholders electing to
receive cash would be taxed on these distributions at capital gain rates. Among other things, the plan
provided a means for the Ford family to obtain liquidity without having to dilute their 40% voting
interest (even though they own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Exchanging existing share for New Shares on a One for One basis. The VEP includes three options for
different kinds of Shareholders:
Option 1: Shareholders who prefer Cash.
Option 2: Shareholders who prefer More Shares
Option 3: Passive Investors
Value Enhancement Plan has tax consequences. Those shareholders electing to receive the new shares
of Ford instead of the 20 buck bonus will not be directly affected by the tax. The new shares are
considered a tax free exchange, with the holding period of the new shares considered the same as
when the original Ford stock was purchased. Shareholders choosing to re invest in stocks can be
incentivized by having more voting power and control over the management.
Those shareholders choosing to collect the $20 cash per share will have to pay capital gains tax on the
cash distribution just as though they have sold part of their shares. This can be either considered a
short term or long term capital gain, depending on when your original Ford shares were purchased.
Benefit out of opportunity Cost for the shareholders to invest the $20 in a different firm.
Ford family benefited by retaining their voting control since they did not have to surrender their Class
B shares.
Since firms incur the re purchase option by offering $20 cash for each stock bought back, the number
of outstanding shares will be reduced. The Earnings per share will increase leading to an increased
stock price.
Long term gains (held more than a year) are taxed

Biological Perspective Essay
Introduction NyL Thompson is a 20 year old Junior Social Work major. She attends a Historically
Black University. She resides off campus in her own apartment. NyL grew up in a supportive and
loving home which consisted of herself, her older brother sister, her mother, and her step father. When
NyL was in the fourth grade she moved from the only home, school, and friends she had ever know
and into a new neighborhood and school, she did not understand why her mother would do such a
thing and began to become upset at her mother. At the age of fourteen NyL lost her father due to
health conditions. For days NyL would not eat, for weeks, and months she would lose focus and find
herself thinking about her father, she became depressed. When she graduated from high school she
began her journey as a college student. She had never experienced stress levels of this height, and

Sam Armstrong Legacy
Thesis
The Leadership and experience of Samuel Chapman Armstrong, during the Civil War mainly caused
his legacy displayed by one of his most influential students, Booker T. Washington. Booker T.
Washington carried this legacy by continuing the philosophy of Samuel Chapman Armstrong through
the development of the Tuskegee Institute and Washington s political influence. Booker T. Washington
was able to adopt Chapman s teaching style and philosophy from Armstrong at Hampton University,
thus starting his view on the concept of good work being done from good men.

The Impact Of Cultural Dimensions On The Emerging...
Every organization has a culture that focuses on social integration, motivation and commitment to
help accomplish goals and innovation while increasing productivity and competitive advantage. The
complex nature of organizations forces one to analyze the internal behaviors that are perceived as the
norms in the environment, thus creating a culture that is embraced whether intentionally or
unintentionally by the people of the organization. To add, interacting across cultures and within
international organizations can be challenging due to the complexities of multicultural situations.
Hence, this dissertation will discuss the impact of cultural dimensions on the emerging leadership
development and operation of an international joint venture with Russia.
Russia is a country that is culture and historically filled with dramatic turning points. The country has
made significant strides both economically and politically to attract business opportunities such as a
joint venture; however, the country s policies could potential affect growth. Furthermore, initiating a
joint venture with another oil company within the country may prove to challenging if there is no clear
understanding of culture. This essay will discuss the research results from the consultant s perspective
on Russia, as well as the impact of cultural dimensions on the emerging leadership development and
operation of the joint venture in Russia.

Freakonomics Summary
A Book Review of Freakonomics and Application to Project Management
November 2010
Project Management
Summary The idea to write Freakonomics began in 2003 when journalist and award winning author
Stephen Dubner wrote a profile of economist Steven Levitt for the New York Times Magazine. At the
time, Levitt, an Economics professor at the University of Chicago, was focusing his research efforts
on answering unique and sometimes controversial questions concerning topics such as crime,
corruption, education, and parenting using economic analysis. The two immediately hit it off and
decided to collaborate to write a book detailing Levitt s most interesting research. In 2005 their book,

Using this type of thinking, one can discover that the answers to life s most interesting questions are
not impenetrable; it just takes someone asking the right questions to discover the underlying answers.
Application to Project Management As discussed in Freakonomics, moral, financial, and social
incentives influence how people behave in various situations. Certainly, the members of the project
team and the stakeholders involved in a project are each motivated by incentives. These incentives
may be in support of the project or against it, which is why it s critically important for the project
manager to recognize these incentives when he/she is developing a stakeholder register and
performing a thorough stakeholder analysis. For example, if a publically funded project was being
undertaken to construct a new elementary school, some taxpayers may have a financial incentive to
oppose the project because they don t want to see a tax hike, but teachers and school administrators
may have a moral incentive to support the project because they feel that a new building would be in
the best interest of the students. Whether stakeholders are in support of the project or against it, the
project manager must communicate and manage all stakeholder expectations. Otherwise, the project
may be negatively

Security Risks Surrounding Electronic Medical Records
In this paper we identify security risks surrounding Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and discuss
strategies healthcare providers can employ to mitigate those risks. We begin with a brief overview of
the legislative history driving the rapid adoption of EMR and other health information technology.
Legislation Driving Rapid Adoption of EMR Perhaps the most important piece of legislation relevant
to our understanding of security risks surrounding EMR and health information technology is The
Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which was signed into law in 1996
by the Clinton administration. HIPAA impacts the healthcare industry in many ways, but of particular
importance at least for our purposes of understanding security risks surrounding EMR is HIPAA s
security rule, which governs how providers must protect private health information during the process
of adopting and implementing new health information technology such as EMR. HIPAA requires
covered entities to take reasonable measures to protect electronic private health information. HIPAA is
vitally important to our understanding of EMR risks because providers can face harsh penalties if
found in violation of HIPAA. Over the next decade, significant advances were made on the technology
front, and in 2009 president Obama signed into law The Health Information Technology for Economic
and Clinical Health Act (HITECH). The HITECH Act introduced the concept of meaningful use as a

Romanticism And The Romantic Period
Texts are a product of their literary nature and their context. This certainly applies to the Romantic
Movement in Britain. The 1830s through to 1850s is when American literature emerged. After the
American Independence War that ended in a victory over England in 1812, a new confidence and
sense of national identity emerged. American writers reflected and wrote about the anxieties.
Numerous writers and artists in the early 19th Century placed a special emphasis on the importance of
Americans natural landscape for the development of national character. Americans became interested
in literature centred on urban and natural life.
Romanticism involves a belief general importance of the individual, the personal and the subjective.
Transcendentalism movement inspired writers such as Washington Irving s Legend of Sleepy Hollow,
and The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe other works emphasised the creative powers of the individual
mind, value for nature, and the stultifying effects of institutions. The American Renaissance arose with
the Romantic Movement. Writers such as William Shakespeare s Macbeth and Matthias Grünewald s
artwork Crucifixion Isenheim Altarpiece dramatized a culture played by poverty and tension with the
emergence of a new democracy. The Neoclassical movement was centred during the late 17th Century
and 18th Century. Neoclassical artworks such as Pity by William Blake imitates the style of the
Romans and Greeks. This period was the start of modern middle class and traditional afternoon tea.
People would group around to debate politics and other ideas of enlightenment. Characteristics of
writing focused on peoples appearance rather than feelings or intentions. These movements have some
similar aspects to each other, which assisted with the creation of Legend of Sleepy Hollow by
Washington Irving.
Macbeth by William Shakespeare is a well known poem and play. Macbeth is one of gothic literature
similarly to Sleepy Hollow because of the use of Witches, ghosts, predictions and unnatural
occurrences throughout the poem. In the 16th century, witches were seen as an unexplainable real
supernatural phenomenon that sparked great fear throughout the world. The Supernatural aspect gives

Comparing Virgin Of The Rocks And The Last Supper
Introduction
This paper will explore the detail expressed through religion based renaissance art. The two works to
be explored here are The Last Supper and the Virgin of the Rocks, which both have Christian
references and have properties owing to the depictions of the main character in the painting. The Last
Supper was created in 1498, in Milan and is on oil and plaster; Virgin of the Rocks was created circa
1483 1486 and is oil on panel.
Works to Explore
In Virgin of the Rocks, a woman is sitting, surrounded by what looks like three children. They seem to
all be paying attention to the child she is holding, who is John the Baptist. In The Last Supper, 13
people sit at a table having a large feast. They are all engrosses in various conversations, ... Show

Both of these pictures have but biblical characters into settings that are unusual for the time. May and
Jesus are usually depicted on thrones or in ambiguous settings. However, both of these paintings show
that there is a more human element to these people. In Virgin of the Rocks, Mary is sitting on the
ground in a place where there are jagged rocks and various types of shrubbery. It seems to even be a
deserted area that is secluded and over grown. The figures are all located in a fabulous and mystical
landscape with rivers that seem to lead nowhere and bizarre rock formations, in the foreground we see
carefully observed and precisely rendered plants and flowers (Syson and Billinge, p. 5).This type of
representation of Mary is referred to as the Madonna of Humility (Freke Gandy, p. 34). When it comes
to Virgin of the Rocks, the point of interest that reveals the paintings subject are the hands of the
people. Mary has her right arm around the infant Saint John the Baptist who is making a gesture of
prayer to the Christ child, the Christ child in turn blesses St. John. Mary s left hand hovers protectively
over the head of her son while an angel looks out and points to St. John (p.

To learn history means to seek and find the forces which are the causes leading to those effects which
we subsequently perceive as historical events. Adolf Hitler Growing up poor in a small town in
Austria he had dreams of becoming famous; some would even say this dream soon became an
obsession. This fascination soon engulfed his life, viewing his goals as a catalyst for a better life. After
a brief stint in the army he pursued this dream and learned to use propaganda as a springboard to

I believe today that I am acting in the sense of the Almighty Creator. By warding off the Jews I am
fighting for the Lord s work. Adolf Hitler
To fully understand the views expressed in this paper, it is necessary to understand Adolf Hitler and to
provide context as to why Schwarzenegger is being compared to what many believe to be the
embodiment of evil itself. This section of the paper will focus on the background of both states:
California and Nazi Germany.
In 1929 Germany was hit with the final blow to an already struggling nation; the Great Depression.
Black Tuesday hit Germany in the midst of a naval blockade, extreme hyperinflation, and poverty for
many Germans. Many historians believe that the blockade against Germany was the main reason for
the rise of Nazism and consequently World War II. Regardless, Germany was in a time of crisis and in
desperate need of salvation.
In 2003, California, while not suffering from the same magnitude of crisis as pre Nazi Germany, was
by no means experiencing prosperity. California was in the midst of an extreme unbalance: suffering
from a massive debt, a governor who seemed unable to help, and increasing unemployment. Residents
were exhausted of false promises made by former governors and looking for change. A recall was
ordered on Governor

Societal Views of Women in the Victorian Era in Henrik Ibsen s A Doll s House
A Doll s House, by Henrik Ibsen, creates a peephole into the lives of a family in the Victorian Era. The
play portrays a female viewpoint in a male dominated society. The values of the society are described
using the actions of a woman, Nora, who rebels against the injustices inflicted upon her gender.
Women s equality with men was not recognized by society in the late 1800 s. Rather, a woman was
considered a doll, a child, and a servant. Nora s alienation reveals society s assumptions and values
about gender.
A woman was considered by society to be a doll because she was expected to be subordinate to her
husband s whims. Referring to a ball that she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She alludes to a child s character when she says, everything I think of seems so silly and insignificant
(26). Torvald replies with a condescending statement: Does my little Nora acknowledge that at last?
(26). Torvald expects only childish talk from her. He even tells her she is little, like a child, and
although he expects nothing more than child s talk from her, he does expect to be obeyed.
Nora plays the part of a slave in her subservience to her husband, for she is supposed to abide by his
rules and be dependent on him. She is not supposed to think for herself and repeatedly told so by those
around her. When speaking about Nora in her presence, Torvald says, She is so terribly self willed
(55). Nora has a conversation with Mrs. Linde, who also tells her, Don t be self willed (57). Torvald
tells her, I will advise you and direct you (64). Nora is expected to be a dependent slave who follows
her husband s advice and directions. Women were also legally dependent upon men. The society s
laws of that time even required the male to cosign everything that a woman had to sign. Nora s naivete
in forging her father s signature and trying to pay off the loan further emphasizes Victorian society s
assumptions about women s inability to deal with a man s world.
These assumptions about women caused their gender value to be vastly

Large areas in Romagna had fallen outside the jurisdiction of the papacy or claimed by Venice after
Alexander VI s death. In 1508, the circumstances forced Julius II to create the League of Cambrai or
more melodramatically known as the Holy League, an anti Venetian alliance between the papacy,
Louis XII, who then ruled Milan, Emperor Maximilian I, and Ferdinand II of Spain, who was king of
Naples. The league troops defeated Venice in May 1509 near Cremona, and the Papal States were
restored.
Although the League was initially successful, by 1510, King Louis XII was regarding Pope Julius II as
a greater threat than Venice. For that reason, France changed sides in the war and allied itself with
Venice. Not long after, Venice submitted to Julius II and allied itself with the papacy against France.
Following a year of fighting over the Romagna, during which the Veneto Papal alliance was
repeatedly defeated, the Pope proclaimed a Holy League against the French in October of 1511. This
league rapidly grew to include England, Spain, and the Holy Roman Empire.
In 1512, Julius II successfully drove French across the Alps, but it was at the cost of the occupation of
Northern Italy by other powers, and Julius II, though he had secured the papal authority in the states
immediately around Rome, was essentially as far as ever from realizing his dream of an

Criminal Psychopathy Essay
There has been a myriad of research into psychopathy as it relates to the ordinary, violent criminal, yet
little research exists into psychopathy of the non violent, corporate criminal. We will examine whether
there are truly differences in the psychopathy of these offenders in comparison to the average street
level criminal, or whether the distinctions purely driven by our own need to justify the actions of well

The Modernist Movement And The International Style Movement
Throughout the Villa Dall ava, 1991, Rem Koolhaas ideologies have been deconstructed,
reconstructed and reproduced such as it complies with Le Corbusier s five ideas of modernism, where
it employs the use of pilotes , roof terrace, the open floor plan, the free façade and the horizontal
window to his design. These major elements are key to the modernist movement and the international
style movement. Rem Koolhaas has made conflict with these key ideas such as the slanted columns as
Le Corbusier s idea was to use simple forms discussed by the early modernist. In a sense it holds these
elements of deconstruction such an alien form within it design.
Le Corbusier s Villa Savoye, 1929, has very similar links to the Villa Dall ava as Rem Koolhaas and
his client wanted the Villa Dall ava to be a modern version of the Villa Savoye. These links are
obvious as they are the five points of architecture which Le Corbusier had set as his architectural
principles. They consist of pilotis, free designing of the ground plan, free design of the façade, the
horizontal windows and a roof garden. One main connection that sticks out is the pilotis as Le
Courbusier had used it as geometric lines around the Villa Savoye, Rem Koolhaas had used pilotis
with his own alien twist on them swaying them off center, putting them where ever need be.
Koolhaas s own architecture, it need hardly be said, does nothing of the kind. And yet Koolhaas s
modernism, brilliantly inventive, nonetheless does not

Essay on Natural Gas Fracking Risks
Natural gas is said to be one of the most popular forms of energy today. In the past, often left
undeveloped and wasted, it was once considered unusable and worthless , compared to oil. In order to
try to break our country s dependence on foreign oil supplies, we have begun to dip into our own
natural gas supply. Natural gas is found underground, and is produced when trapped gas is released
above ground. Hydraulic fracturing or fracking is a process that extracts natural gas from the ground.

As more and more natural gas locations are sprouting up so close to home, it makes sense to explore
the risks proven to be associated with fracking. Groundwater polluting of communities near natural

bad since EnCana Corporation fracked into their aquifer in search of shale gas in 2004 (Nelson 25).
By fracking into the aquifer, the chemicals used in the process undoubtedly contaminated the drinking
water of the area. Nelson also reports of Rosebud resident, Jessica Ernst and her family s experience
with fracking. Ms. Ernst stated that Encana gas told her family that they would never fracture near her
family s aquifer. By 2005, Ms. Ernst says that her water started going bad, she was receiving horrible
burns and rashes from showering, and her dogs refused to drink the water so that is when she began to

own home or not be able to provide their pets safe water to drink. In 2006, Ernst decided to go public,
showing reporters how she could set fire to her tap water, and speaking out about the industry (Nelson

because fracking made the water completely undrinkable (Nelson 26). It makes one wonder how large

Long Live Latin
Latin is a language that a lot of people had to study in school or university with varying degrees of
enthusiasm, given its common status as a dead language. In her essay Long Live Latin! The Language
that Never Died Katja Wiesner argues that Latin should be referred as vivant linguae mortuae, living
dead language rather than being considered dead. The author demonstrates this by pointing out that
although there are no native speakers of Latin anymore since people study it in school or university,
the language has constantly been evolving and it is still being used for communication purposes.
In order to support her argument, Wiesner highlights that Latin has survived through Romance
languages such as Romansh, Ladin, Portuguese, Spanish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She manages doing that by not using much Latin terminology and If she does, she does provide a

Latin.
The author s first argument recognizes the language s ability to survive through Romance languages
such as Portuguese and Spanish and how it has influenced their languages grammatical structures as
well as their vocabulary. The author also provides the rather unexpected example of the English
language which also plays a part in preserving Latin, since the latter has had an influence on the
former s vocabulary, abbreviations and structures. This was a very interesting point since a lot of
people, including myself, associate Latin primarily with Romance languages rather than Germanic
ones.
Another surprising but convincing point, listed in the essay, is the fact that Latin is not only used by
the Catholic Church, as a mean for communication or for liturgical purposes, but also the Churches in
promoting the language via social networks such as Twitter, where Pope Francis is active. Even
though one could argue that the purpose of establishing this account was not primarily promotion of
the language, Wiesner points out that other user answer to the Pope in Latin, which proves that the
Catholic Church is helping to popularize

Anorexia Not just a Womens Disease Essay
Anorexia Not just a womens disease Anorexia: Not Just A Women s Disease Oh I m so fat . This is not
something we normally think of hearing out of a man s mouth. Women are thought to be the only ones
that obsess over their appearance. Therefore, anorexia is commonly thought to be a woman s disease.
But in reality, there are many men fighting it. Out of the estimated eight million people in the United
States with anorexia, about ten percent of the cases are men (Something Fishy, par.1). These are only
reported cases. It is assumed that there is more, but the men haven t come forward, since it is very
hard for a man to admit to having this disease. Nevertheless, there are a growing number of men in

In fact, one third of high school wrestlers starve themselves to make weight (WebMd Health par. 14).
High school wrestling coaches encourage less eating, and low water intake, so that the wrestlers can
get into a lower weight class. And unlike with most sports, where the athletes stop their behavior after
the sports season is over, wrestlers tend to continue there behavior all year round. An average wrestler
s body fat is three percent lower than a normal high school student s(WebMD Health par. 14). For
example, my brother has been in wrestling for nine years now. Although he s not anorexic, he has
done some crazy, and very unhealthy things for wrestling. His coach makes the wrestlers spit all the
time. I ve witnessed this at school. I could always tell who the wrestlers were, because they would be
walking down the hall and all of a sudden spit into the garbage can. This was one of their many ways
to dehydrate themselves to loose weight. The wrestlers rarely ate anything at lunch when I was in
school, and if they did, it was hardly anything. I often noticed my brother wouldn t eat dinner with us
at home, and I got really worried. When I would nag him about eating, his response was always the
same, I have to make weight . This making weight as they called it, involves losing enough weight so
they can wrestle in a lower weight class, and

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome
Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is a respiratory illness that can affect anyone and is
terrorizing the Middle East and other countries. It was previously called Novel Coronavirus (nCoV).
The illness affects the lungs and breathing tubes. It is caused by a virus called the Middle East
Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS CoV). The disease was first spotted in Saudi Arabia
sometime in September 2012. However, MERS CoV was probably around long before 2012. This
illness is very different from other coronaviruses found in people. About 3 to 4 out of every 10 people
with MERS have died. Most patients who have died, had an underlying medical condition. MERS is a
very serious illness that everyone needs to be aware of its presence (ECDC, ... Show more content on

There are two different kinds of lab tests, Molecular tests and Serology tests. A Molecular test is
looking for evidence of an active infection of MERS CoV. Molecular tests are used to diagnose
patients who are thought to be infected with MERS CoV because of their symptoms. Real time reverse
transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT PCR) assays are molecular tests that are used to find
specific RNA that come from the virus in a host s body. This test converts the viral RNA into its DNA.
After it is converted, you look at one of MERS CoV s DNAs and see if it matches. If it does, this is a
positive test and the patient is infected with MERS. The success of the test depends on several things.
These factors include the experience of the lab workers, the environment (no contamination), and the
condition and type of the specimens being tested. When doing this test, multiple specimens are
recommended to get to best result. However, a serology test is used in a different way. It is made to
detect previous infection in patients may have had the virus. To do this, the serology test looks for
antibodies to MERS CoV. Antibodies are proteins produced by the body s immune system to attack
and kill viruses, bacteria, and other microbes during infection. If the test finds antibodies to MERS
CoV it proves that the patient has previously been infected with the virus and now has an immune
response. It has one screening test and two confirmatory tests to find antibodies to MERS CoV. The
screening part is called enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELIZA) and the confirmatory tests are
called immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and microneutralhzation assay to check for the positive result.

Challenges and Advantages of Doing Business in China...
Challenges and Advantages of Doing Business in China
With China emerging as a global power in business within the last decade, knowing about doing
business in China has become more important than ever. There are both many advantanges and
challenges with doing business in China in this modern era, and understanding both sides of this coin
is the key to being successful in China. Some aspects to keep in mind include the cultural barrier, the
price of the work force in China compared to the United States, and have the made in China brand be
accepted back in the United States.
The main advantage of doing business in China is the fact that China has emerged as one of the world
s strongest economic forces, driven by the shear number of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This is probably the reason that doing business in China is currently so challenging. In addition, there
is always the language barrier to overcome as well. Despite the fact that most Chinese are learning
English as their second language, there is no doubt that being able to speak Chinese as an American
coming to China for business has a huge advantage over the rest of the competition.
Another challenge is that despite the ability to manufacture products cheaper in China, there is a flip
side to this situation and that is that sometimes, that made in America sign on the back of a product
could mean more than the few dollars more it costs to buy that product. Some Americans, in their
spirit of patriotism, care more about supporting the American economy than saving a little bit here and
there buying products that were manufactured outside of the United States. Balancing the stigma
sometimes associated with making a product in a foreign country with the lower costs that usually
comes along with that is important in doing business in China as well. As one can see, there is ample
opportunity for business in China. China s economy is expanding very quickly. In order to be
successful overseas however, there are many important points to keep in mind. In learning these
obstacles and figuring out how to overcome them will define success in

American History X Incarceration Theory
Introduction American History X is a film that describes the story of a white supremacist, Derek
Vineyard, who learns through his prison experience that his beliefs are erroneous. During his time in
prison, Derek was forced to cohabitate amongst non white individuals, coercing him to reconsider his
prior Neo Nazi principles. After serving his sentence, Derek realizes that he must save his younger
brother from emulating his example. By analyzing the substantial aspects of prison life (preliminary
adjustment to prison life, prison experience, prison subculture and rehabilitation), as demonstrated in
the film, it can be determined that the film American History X can be used as a realistic tool for
creating awareness of the consequences of being incarcerated and the effects that prison can have on
an individual after they have been released. Furthermore, numerous theories such as argot roles, the
importation theory, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there are many inmates who are unable to cope well with the pains of imprisonment.
Maladaptive responses such as emotional disorders, self harm and suicide attempts are the most
common during the initial phases of incarceration (Adams, 1992*pg. 275*). Being barred from the
outside world, prisoners develop coping mechanisms that allow them to deal with the pains of
incarceration. According to Thomas and Foster, two theoretical models have emerged in response to
the coping mechanisms demonstrated by inmates. These two models signify the rudimentary
perceptions pertaining to the patterns found in response to incarceration. The first is the importation
model, which uses individual level inmate characteristics that were established prior to imprisonment
to explain prison experience (Power, et al., 1997). On the other hand, the deprivation model suggests
that the environment of prison itself explains the experience prisoners have (Cooley,

Agrarian In Days Of Heaven
Days of Heaven (1978) directed by, Terrence Malick, is a revisionist film that portrays a dystopian
agrarian way of life. Populist Agrarian films emerged during the era of the Great Depression. The
urbanization of society is depicted negatively whereas rural areas are associated with paradise;
however, the remote town of Panhandle, Texas is consumed with darkness by the protagonist s selfish
pursuit of prosperity. Days of Heaven is a critically acclaimed film, primarily due to its unsympathetic
characters thereby making it challenging for the audience to relate. Agrarian and Western film genres
share a quality of the everyday man. In The Grapes of Wrath (1940), directed by John Ford, Tom Joad
encompasses the archetypal everyday man, whereas Bill is characterized as a selfish and violent
coward. For instance, Bill flees the scene after beating his supervisor to death and fatally stabs the
wealthy, prominent farmer. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hence, the farmer asks Abby where she came from. In the lecture, Gillian describes this fear as
problematic, especially for a community that prides itself on familiarity. The farmer s closest
confidante and foreman is aware of Billy and Abby s scheme, but he ultimately fails to convince the
farmer of their deceit. Furthermore, the Joad family s predicament can be attributed to the Dust Bowl
and additional external forces: inhumane working conditions, poor wages, and inflation, in light of the
Great Depression. Conversely, the crickets in Days of Heaven represent internal forces deteriorating
Agrarian society. Bill and Abby are con artists with no moral authority and thus their character, rather
than circumstance drives the

Argumentative Essay On Timeouts
Do you need a time out? Have you ever asked this question at home or in the classroom? I know I did
many times and the truth is that I am torn when it comes to timeouts sometimes
In my experience, time out is totally ineffective and sometimes it allows children to get away and
relax this helps them to calm down which has a huge impact on a child s behavior. So I am left to
think and wonder our time outs good or bad? Is there really a right or wrong way to give a time out?
Will this be the next big debate?
A little girl just ran through her house covered in mud and broke her mother s favorite lamp. What is a
mother to do? Well when children are growing up and being raised reinforcers and punishments

So have you ever wondered timeouts a good thing or a bad thing? Why is it a good thing to give a
child a time out? Well according to researchers Tera L. Wolf T. F. McLaughlin and Randy Lee
Williams of Gonzaga University (2006, Vol 21 No.3), state that the use of time outs are very
acceptable when dealing with children s behaviors because it is just that a behavioral technique that is
used to decrease the frequency of a certain behavior, and it was found to be the most effective for
behaviors that are maintained either by attention or tangible reinforcers, which we are know are well
known factors in a classroom setting.
There are even ways for parents and teachers to work to make sure timeouts run effectively. According

Summary Of The Film Remember The Titans
People do not realize that multiple coaches have different coaching techniques, but coaching strictly
could change collection of teams in communities. The academy award winning movie Remember the
Titans Coach Herman Boone prove just how coaching strictly could change football players, as well
as, the whole town. Coach Boone portrayed as a strict coach who did not tolerate any disrespect on his
team from the players and from the coaches. He had an oppressive guideline to how he was going to
teach the players. He made sure the team knew that from the first meeting in the gym. The white part
of the team showed up subsequently late and Coach Boone was infuriated. Coach Bill Yoast was
trying to make a statement that he was not going to be beneath anyone, especially a black man. Coach
Boone had to let Coach Yoast that this is his team and he could easily dismiss him at anytime, because

Boone how to admonish his team. Eventually, Coach Boone discombobulated Gary and Ray in front

Book Report On Isaac s Storm
Crystal Skinner

HIST 2301
Professor Lambert
Isaac s Storm Book Review
Isaac s Storm, is a tale of self confidence. This Hurricane in 1900 in Galveston was the worst and
deadliest hurricane this country has ever seen. About 6,000 people lost their lives and among those
who died was Isaac Cline s wife. I can tell how guilty he must have felt and how horrific this time was
for Cline, especially because he thought a massive storm could never devastate his amazing city. The
horrific events of what happened in Galveston is only partially told in this book. Erik Larson s use of
Cline s own letters and reports show Cline s own self confidence or pride and falsifies facts that Cline
was the hero he believed himself to be after the Storm surfaced. Isaac s Storm clearly shows what can
happen when human arrogance takes priority over anything else. ... Show more content on

With the floodwaters lapping at the walls, he remained in denial. Isaac Cline along with a few of the
people who worked with him, convinced themselves that the storms out of the Caribbean would move
the opposite way. Cline agreed with Matthew Fontaine Maury an oceanographer, that the region would
not get the storm surges. To ignore the signs of the storm s size and intensity was the ultimate sign of
arrogance. The National Weather Service didn t want to create fear, but they should have been scared
or a little more concerned, since other parts of the United States experienced major disasters before.
Not as major as this time obviously, thus the reaction nonchalant

It is familiar topic: a word in the daily use. It s all around us. We go to college or university to get educated. We entrust our children to schools in the belief that they will become knowledgeable and skilled (Wood 11). Evidently, education is a long term process, which almost all people must experience in life. So that, the choices associated with major, future job or kind of programs are controversial problems in general public, especially the issue of whether or not Co operative (Co op) education is better than traditional (Non Co op) programs. As evidence of this, according to Learning to Learn, College teachers have expressed frustration about attendance in class, uncompleted reading assignments, and student focus on grades rather than learning. Student surveys indicate that courses are not interesting, that students fail to recognize the value of what they are learning, and that many faculty rely too heavily on lectures for transmitting information (Wirth and Perkins 2 3). Moreover, the rote learning style, which is the memorization of information based on repetition, though might not understand basic content deeply or may immediately forget the facts they have learned after the test is the harmful disease that so many students are struggling. Contrary to conventional education programs, it is implied that Evidently, enabling students to experience the more theoretical world of school in tandem with the more practical world of work has the potential of increasing some of the positive outcomes of education (Jeela 2). In other words, due to integrated learning model of co op educational structure, the student can review knowledge what is gained in class more effective than studying what were taken note. • 4. Essay about Air Pollution in Birmingham, Alabama Air pollution continues to be a significant problem in the city of Birmingham, as it has been for decades. No one enjoys walking the streets of Birmingham only to taste or smell the smoke and particulates in the air, not to mention the damaging effects to one s health. Fortunately, improvements have been made; forty years ago, residents of Birmingham could not even see the skyline due to the immense amounts of particulates in the air, but now the skyline is visible on a daily basis. The noticeable improvement indicates the progress that has been made over the years, but there is still plenty of room for much needed improvement. For decades, the air quality in Birmingham did not meet EPA criteria, but crossed the threshold this year. This achievement demonstrates the prominent progress made by the industries and residents to improve air quality. Although much improvement has been made, there is still more to be done. Spencer states that In 2011, the American Lung Association ranked Birmingham the eight worst city in the nation for particle pollution, or soot (An Old Cloud of Polluted Air Lifts from Birmingham s Shoulders). Birmingham s attempts at improving air quality have been valuable, but the air in Birmingham is still dirty when compared to other industrial cities. Pollution continues to pose an enormous threat to residents of urban cities worldwide. In the August 2008 Monthly Update, it is stated that approximately 800,000 deaths each year can be attributed to outdoor air pollution, making pollution the single most harmful environmental hazard to human health in urban areas (Kallman). The fact that pollution kills hundreds of thousands of people each year alone portrays just how dangerous living in these conditions can be. Kallman writes about a study which proves an increase in upper respiratory diseases, cardiovascular mortality, respiratory mortality, and low birth weights when exposed to air pollutants (August 2008: Monthly Update). These can be very serious diseases and complications which, when contracted, can lead to death or very serious illnesses. There ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Environmental Pollution And Its Effects On The Environment Environmental pollution is one of the biggest problems the world faces today. Pollution troubles humans economically, physically, and everyday of our lives. The outbreak of diseases is linked to the contamination of the environment; however, most people do not know about this problem. This fact shows that increasing environmental pollution needs to be taken care of a soon as possible, not only for the good of the environment, but also for the people that live in it. Although environmental pollution can be caused by natural events such as forest fires and active volcanoes, use of the word pollution generally implies that the contaminants have an anthropogenic source that is, a source created by human activities ( Pollution. ). Many factors explain why environmental pollution has become such a large issue in the world. Air and water pollution has been caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Most of the rivers are polluted and ninety percent of urban water bodies are polluted. Half of china does not have access to clean water. Regulations are passed to regulate pollution, but they are not monitored. The Chinese government deals with the punishment of pollution, it spends two hundred billion dollars each year on pollution problems (Desonie 35). However, if the people of the world were to act on this problem, it would definitely help both the environment and the people. Illegal immigration into the country has sky rocketed in the past ten years. The number of illegal immigrants flowing into the country is approximately seven hundred thousand each year. Actually, if we can make use of air as an aid for running an engine it is a fantastic idea. As we all know, air is all around us, it never runs out, it is non polluting and it is free. An Air Driven Engine makes use of Compressed Air Technology for its operation. Compressed Air Technology is now widely preferred for research by different industries for developing different drives for different purposes. The Compressed Air Technology is quite simple. If we compress normal air into a cylinder the air would hold some energy within it. This energy can be utilized for useful purposes. When this compressed air expands, the energy is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fig. 2.1 working of two stroke engine There are no traditional valves in a two stroke engine. In a two stroke the engines fires once every revolution. This makes the engine highly efficient and lightweight compared to four stroke systems. Rather than entering through valves, the fuel/air mixture enters through an intake port and exhaust exits out of an exhaust port. In place of traditional valves the two stroke engine uses the piston s position to force out exhaust or suck in fuel mixture. Reeds are vital to a two stroke system. The reeds are placed between the intake manifold and the carburetor, open and close to allow the fuel / air mixture to enter the case of the engine and trap it, and ensure the proper exchange of gasses in the engine. This procedure might sound complex, but it is, in fact, extremely effective and easy to understand. The whole cycle can be explained as follows: 1) As the piston moves from bottom dead center to top dead center it creates a vaccum to draw the fuel / air mixture through the carburetor and past the reed valve assembly. 2) The piston moves down from top dead center to bottom dead center. The reed closes, causing the pressure to build in the cylinder. The movement of the piston uncovers the intake port and pressurized the fuel / air mixture. 3) The piston now moves up from bottom dead center to top dead center, effectively ending a cycle and starting another. The review of existing literature and all the discussion above provoked the ideas discussed below: 1. The dominance of western research: Studies about teacher collaboration and its impact are mostly found in developed country context specially in the US. This is probably because in the US recently there is policy urge for team teaching (Ronfeldt, Farmer et al. 2015) which has made it an attractive and suitable context for such studies. A few project evaluation discuss peer collaboration in developing country context (i.e. Coffey International Development 2012) but those only looked into the status of peer collaboration within the project capacity. 2. Studies are mostly in a setup environment: Most of the studies around teacher collaboration took place in set up environments. The natural collaboration among teachers is ignored in the literature. Although the studies in the US context apparently look like natural but the urge for teaming in the policy has given the field a setup image. The argument is whether these effects are enough to cause an unfair advantage and are they dangerous enough to warrant a rule to be made about it. There are many things that come into question when addressing the affects elevation has on athletes such as: the effects of air resistance, air density, low oxygen levels, and a weaker gravitational pull (Ward Smith). When people think of elevation most people think of in the mountains or thousands of feet in the air. That is not the case. All of these handicaps and issues can affect athletic events that are held in heights as low as one thousand five hundred feet. At this altitude there is approximately 16% less oxygen in the air (Altitude). At first glance this does not seem like a big difference but when a highly trained athlete is competing this can be the difference between a loss or a win. Another measurement of oxygen intake at elevation is the study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology in 1996, trained and untrained cyclists were asked to undergo a Vo2max test, Vo2max is the rate of oxygen consumed during the exercise test, at while at sea level and again at five hundred and eighty meters. Certainly, the members of the project team and the stakeholders involved in a project are each motivated by incentives. These incentives may be in support of the project or against it, which is why it s critically important for the project manager to recognize these incentives when he/she is developing a stakeholder register and performing a thorough stakeholder analysis. For example, if a publically funded project was being undertaken to construct a new elementary school, some taxpayers may have a financial incentive to oppose the project because they don t want to see a tax hike, but teachers and school administrators may have a moral incentive to support the project because they feel that a new building would be in the best interest of the students. We begin with a brief overview of the legislative history driving the rapid adoption of EMR and other health information technology. Legislation Driving Rapid Adoption of EMR Perhaps the most important piece of legislation relevant to our understanding of security risks surrounding EMR and health information technology is The Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which was signed into law in 1996 by the Clinton administration. HIPAA impacts the healthcare industry in many ways, but of particular importance at least for our purposes of understanding security risks surrounding EMR is HIPAA s security rule, which governs how providers must protect private health information during the process of adopting and implementing new health information technology such as EMR. HIPAA requires covered entities to take reasonable measures to protect electronic private health information. HIPAA is vitally important to our understanding of EMR risks because providers can face harsh penalties if found in violation of HIPAA. Over the next decade, significant advances were made on the technology front, and in 2009 president Obama signed into law The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH). • 26. Romanticism And The Romantic Period Texts are a product of their literary nature and their context. This certainly applies to the Romantic Movement in Britain. The 1830s through to 1850s is when American literature emerged. After the American Independence War that ended in a victory over England in 1812, a new confidence and sense of national identity emerged. American writers reflected and wrote about the anxieties. Numerous writers and artists in the early 19th Century placed a special emphasis on the importance of Americans natural landscape for the development of national character. Americans became interested in literature centred on urban and natural life. Romanticism involves a belief general importance of the individual, the personal and the subjective. Transcendentalism movement inspired writers such as Washington Irving s Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe other works emphasised the creative powers of the individual mind, value for nature, and the stultifying effects of institutions. The American Renaissance arose with the Romantic Movement. Writers such as William Shakespeare s Macbeth and Matthias Grünewald s artwork Crucifixion Isenheim Altarpiece dramatized a culture played by poverty and tension with the emergence of a new democracy. The Neoclassical movement was centred during the late 17th Century and 18th Century. Neoclassical artworks such as Pity by William Blake imitates the style of the Romans and Greeks. This period was the start of modern middle class and traditional afternoon tea. People would group around to debate politics and other ideas of enlightenment. Characteristics of writing focused on peoples appearance rather than feelings or intentions. These movements have some similar aspects to each other, which assisted with the creation of Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. Macbeth by William Shakespeare is a well known poem and play. Macbeth is one of gothic literature similarly to Sleepy Hollow because of the use of Witches, ghosts, predictions and unnatural occurrences throughout the poem. In order to try to break our country s dependence on foreign oil supplies, we have begun to dip into our own natural gas supply. Natural gas is found underground, and is produced when trapped gas is released above ground. Hydraulic fracturing or fracking is a process that extracts natural gas from the ground. As harmless as the billion dollar producing oil companies would want us to believe, environmental groups, scientists, and average citizens have raised concerns about the negative impact of hydraulic fracking on the environment and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As more and more natural gas locations are sprouting up so close to home, it makes sense to explore the risks proven to be associated with fracking. Groundwater polluting of communities near natural gas drilling sites, has been linked to fracking. At least 15 water wells in Rosebud, Alberta, have gone bad since EnCana Corporation fracked into their aquifer in search of shale gas in 2004 (Nelson 25). By fracking into the aquifer, the chemicals used in the process undoubtedly contaminated the drinking water of the area. Nelson also reports of Rosebud resident, Jessica Ernst and her family s experience with fracking. Ms. Ernst stated that Encana gas told her family that they would never fracture near her family s aquifer. By 2005, Ms. Ernst says that her water started going bad, she was receiving horrible burns and rashes from showering, and her dogs refused to drink the water so that is when she began to pay attention (Nelson 25). It is a horrible thought that a person could get burnt taking a shower in their own home or not be able to provide their pets safe water to drink. In 2006, Ernst decided to go public, showing reporters how she could set fire to her tap water, and speaking out about the industry (Nelson 25). One gas company recently bought out the town of Dimock, Pennsylvania, for $4.1 million because fracking made the water completely undrinkable (Nelson 26). It makes one wonder how large drilling ... Long Live Latin Latin is a language that a lot of people had to study in school or university with varying degrees of enthusiasm, given its common status as a dead language. In her essay Long Live Latin! The Language that Never Died Katja Wiesner argues that Latin should be referred as vivant linguae mortuae, living dead language rather than being considered dead. The author demonstrates this by pointing out that although there are no native speakers of Latin anymore since people study it in school or university, the language has constantly been evolving and it is still being used for communication purposes. In order to support her argument, Wiesner highlights that Latin has survived through Romance languages such as Romansh, Ladin, Portuguese, Spanish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She manages doing that by not using much Latin terminology and If she does, she does provide a translations which means that this would not hinder the understanding of a person who has not studied Latin. The author s first argument recognizes the language s ability to survive through Romance languages such as Portuguese and Spanish and how it has influenced their languages grammatical structures as well as their vocabulary. The author also provides the rather unexpected example of the English language which also plays a part in preserving Latin, since the latter has had an influence on the former s vocabulary, abbreviations and structures. This was a very interesting point since a lot of people, including myself, associate Latin primarily with Romance languages rather than Germanic ones. Another surprising but convincing point, listed in the essay, is the fact that Latin is not only used by the Catholic Church, as a mean for communication or for liturgical purposes, but also the Churches in promoting the language via social networks such as Twitter, where Pope Francis is active. Even though one could argue that the purpose of establishing this account was not primarily promotion of the language, Wiesner points out that other user answer to the Pope in Latin, which proves that the Catholic Church is helping to popularize ... Therefore, anorexia is commonly thought to be a woman s disease. But in reality, there are many men fighting it. Out of the estimated eight million people in the United States with anorexia, about ten percent of the cases are men (Something Fishy, par.1). These are only reported cases. High school wrestling coaches encourage less eating, and low water intake, so that the wrestlers can get into a lower weight class. An average wrestler s body fat is three percent lower than a normal high school student s(WebMD Health par. 14). For example, my brother has been in wrestling for nine years now. Although he s not anorexic, he has done some crazy, and very unhealthy things for wrestling. His coach makes the wrestlers spit all the time. I ve witnessed this at school. I could always tell who the wrestlers were, because they would be walking down the hall and all of a sudden spit into the garbage can. This was one of their many ways to dehydrate themselves to loose weight. The wrestlers rarely ate anything at lunch when I was in school, and if they did, it was hardly anything. I often noticed my brother wouldn t eat dinner with us at home, and I got really worried. When I would nag him about eating, his response was always the same, I have to make weight . It was previously called Novel Coronavirus (nCoV). The illness affects the lungs and breathing tubes. It is caused by a virus called the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS CoV). The disease was first spotted in Saudi Arabia sometime in September 2012. However, MERS CoV was probably around long before 2012. This illness is very different from other coronaviruses found in people. About 3 to 4 out of every 10 people with MERS have died. Most patients who have died, had an underlying medical condition. There are two different kinds of lab tests, Molecular tests and Serology tests. A Molecular test is looking for evidence of an active infection of MERS CoV. Molecular tests are used to diagnose patients who are thought to be infected with MERS CoV because of their symptoms. Real time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT PCR) assays are molecular tests that are used to find specific RNA that come from the virus in a host s body. This test converts the viral RNA into its DNA. After it is converted, you look at one of MERS CoV s DNAs and see if it matches. If it does, this is a positive test and the patient is infected with MERS. The success of the test depends on several things. These factors include the experience of the lab workers, the environment (no contamination), and the condition and type of the specimens being tested. When doing this test, multiple specimens are recommended to get to best result. However, a serology test is used in a different way. It is made to detect previous infection in patients may have had the virus. To do this, the serology test looks for antibodies to MERS CoV. Antibodies are proteins produced by the body s immune system to attack and kill viruses, bacteria, and other microbes during infection. If the test finds antibodies to MERS CoV it proves that the patient has previously been infected with the virus and now has an immune response. It has one screening test and two confirmatory tests to find antibodies to MERS CoV. The screening part is called enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELIZA) and the confirmatory tests are called immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and microneutralhzation assay to check for the positive result. American History X Incarceration Theory Introduction American History X is a film that describes the story of a white supremacist, Derek Vineyard, who learns through his prison experience that his beliefs are erroneous. After serving his sentence, Derek realizes that he must save his younger brother from emulating his example. By analyzing the substantial aspects of prison life (preliminary adjustment to prison life, prison experience, prison subculture and rehabilitation), as demonstrated in the film, it can be determined that the film American History X can be used as a realistic tool for creating awareness of the consequences of being incarcerated and the effects that prison can have on an individual after they have been released. Maladaptive responses such as emotional disorders, self harm and suicide attempts are the most common during the initial phases of incarceration (Adams, 1992*pg. 275*). Being barred from the outside world, prisoners develop coping mechanisms that allow them to deal with the pains of incarceration. According to Thomas and Foster, two theoretical models have emerged in response to the coping mechanisms demonstrated by inmates. These two models signify the rudimentary perceptions pertaining to the patterns found in response to incarceration. The first is the importation model, which uses individual level inmate characteristics that were established prior to imprisonment to explain prison experience (Power, et al., 1997). On the other hand, the deprivation model suggests that the environment of prison itself explains the experience prisoners have (Cooley, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
