Wireless Application Protocol
INTRODUCTION
 WAP has been created by companies like
NOKIA, ERICSSON, and MOTOROLA.
Main Objectives are:
•Open to all
• Application scale across transport options(GSM etc..)
• Application scale across device types.
• Extensible overtime to new networks and transports(eg.
3G systems)

Wireless Application Protocol
 WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol.
 WAP is the global standard for presentation and
delivery of wireless information and telephony services.
WAP uses mark-up language WML
 WAP allows carriers to strengthen services with
information we want and need while we are on the move.
What is WAP?

WML Example
Basic Components of WAP are WML and WML script:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE wml PUBLIC "-//WAPFORUM//DTD WML
1.1//EN"
<wml>

WAP SOLUTION FOR THE
WIRELESS DEVICE
Small Display:
 The WML structures documents are in cards and decks.
Limited input facilities:
 WML addresses the issue as well.
Limited memory and CPU:
WAP address this restriction by defining a lightweight adapted to its purpose.
Limited battery power:
This issue is solved by minimizing the bandwidth needed and thus keeping
the bearer utilization as low as possible.

WAP SOLUTION FOR THE
WIRELESS NETWORK
Low bandwidth:
 minimizing the traffic over the air.
High Latency:
 minimizing the roundtrips between the wireless and the wireless network.
Less connection stability /unpredictable Bearer availability:
 since no connection is set up the effects of lost bearer and times of
inactivity are minimized by the transaction layer WTP.

CONCLUSION
• WAP can be considered as a development running parallel
to the web.
• WAP will reach a large population and make the
subscribers more comfortable
• WAP is at too slow because it uses GSM network.
• WAP will become more efficient with the advent UMTS.
