quality. It also connotes that it will interest more people to Q

mistakenly thought as a snooker magazine. on the 200th
edition the
name was shortened to Q. the name “Q” would possibly make the

Kerrang is a music magazine that was
first issued on the 6th
of June 1981,
the publisher for this magazine is
Bauer media group. The target
audience for kerrang is aimed at 14 to
21 year olds which are interested in in
heavy metal/rock music. The
circulation of kerrang magazine is
43,003, it was a monthly magazine but
in 1987 it became weekly. The price

Mojo magazine is a popular music magazine,
it was first published on the 15th

1993. the first issue of mojo magazine was

eclectic, it is confirmed as eclectic
because it has a range of genres, this is
because Q magazine is aimed at young
people and adults that are interested in
a specific genres.
The verbal code of the strapline
“Discover great music” connotes that Q
magazine over a range of genres in order
to attract different audiences.
The purpose of Q magazine is to read not just about one music
type, but a range of music types, it gives a purpose to the reader
because it will encourage them to read the magazine.
It has a bright red logo to stand out to the audience. The colour red
connotes how the publication are passionate about covering all

amount of readers for Q are aged 15-24 years of age as the content produced in Q is
appropriate for both young people and teenagers.
For 70% of the readership to be in the ABC1 category, this also connotes how they
have the spending power to afford a £4.00 magazine.
Graham Burton (1997) has a theory about classifying audiences by
their social and media grouping. The social grouping of my target
audience is young adults from the ages of 16-25 years of age which
would be mixed gender. They will most likely be British but they
will also be from different countries such as America. The
demographic of Q magazine is categorized into C1 and C2 because
the magazine is targeted at people that are more higher The media
grouping of my target audience will be fans of other magazines such
as Mojo, Kerrang! and others, my target audience will look for
particular artists on the magazine.

For my primary research I went out
to the public to get responses to my
questionnaire so I can then create
my magazine with the responses of
the publics interests. Started by
asking people within the target age
range.
Question 1
In this question it shows
what gender who took my
magazine questionnaire, it
shows that most of the
people who took the
questionnaire are female.
I will use this as a base for
my own magazine by
mainly targeting females
instead of males so that it
will become more
popular. There are very
few music magazines
aimed solely at females.
Question 2
In this question it shows
the age group who took my
magazine questionnaire. It
clearly shows that the most
popular age group is 13-18
year olds. Furthermore I
will use this information
for my own magazine by
making it aimed at 13-18
year olds. By doing this it
shows that I have followed
the information that I have
received and used it into
consideration.
Question 3
In this question it shows
how often people buy
magazines. It shows weekly,
fortnightly, monthly, yearly
and never. In this question
it shows that hardly anyone
has bought a magazine, it
also shows that most people
buy them yearly. I will use
this information to make
sure that my magazine is at
the cheapest price so
people would be interested
in buying it more often then
annually.

In this question it shows
what articles/interviews
would people like that
have taken my magazine.
Most people have selected
posters and up coming
albums/artists. It shows
that the people prefer to
read about the artists and
also have free posters of
their favourite artists.

In this question it shows if
people would buy a
subscription for a music
magazine. As you can clearly
see most of the people that
had taken my questionnaire
chose not to buy a
subscription for a music
magazine, in total there
were 20.00% choose yes and
80.00% choose no. I will
therefore use this
information to consider how I
can make subscriptions more
attractive possibly by
offering a discount to pay for
the magazine in this way.

In this question it
shows how frequently
the public would like
magazines published,
as it can see the most
people have chosen is
monthly. I will
therefore use this
information to
consider producing a
monthly edition of
my own magazine.

In this question it

of music people
would prefer on my
magazine, in the
question it gives
you options such as
indie, hip hop, rock
and pop music. The
one that was most
popular was pop
music. I will make
this the focus genre
of my magazine.

how much people would

options you can tell that
people would spend £1-2
on a music magazine, I
will therefore use this
information to make my
magazine as cheap as
possible so it will attract
more people to buy my
magazine. I could
consider discounts and
free offers to help

magazine, as you can see
the most popular was
free concert tickets. This
is an expensive option
but worth considering
although there would be
cheaper freebies that
could be offered or
perhaps a way of getting

in my magazine.

people will buy a
music magazine
because of a free
gift. As you can see
people have chosen
maybe as the popular
answer. This could
be suggesting that it
isn’t always about a
free gift and needs
to be about the
content of the
magazine as well.
Secondary research involves looking at existing material, it allows
you to look at resources that have already have been created. It
could also involve both qualitative and quantitative research.

The research is already out there. All you need to do is shift is
through. There are a wide range of resources available.

The research may not be suitable for your needs. You are reliant on
the accuracy and integrity of other researchers work.

Stereotypes
The age group for Q magazine is mainly aimed at 15-24 year old's, the gender
for the magazine is aimed at both male and female readers. The demographics
and socio economics for Q would fit into the group D and E because it is mainly
for people that enjoy multiple music genres which means it wouldn’t be upper
class compared to other magazines. Q magazine is fitted into the category of
‘inform and educate’ where the audience will learn something by reading the
information for example readers could be reading about an article and they
could possibly learn something about within the article they are reading.
The stereotypical areas of interest for this readership would be:
Casual clothing
Lower class
Part time job
Stereotypes-a widely held but fixed and
oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of
person or thing. An example of a Stereotype is a
racist stereotype by making fun of people from a
different race such as saying “all blacks are good a
sport” is an example of a stereotype because by
this saying this it is grouping that particular race
together to indicate that everyone of that race is
good at sports.
This image reflects how clothes
can change our opinion of
the same person.
 Advantages- by following someone’s approach
and trying to copy that person will give you a
better background of things and problems you
may face. It will also push you to higher success
in life. That celebrity could motivate you for
example if they gave an inspirational speech it
would encourage you to be inspired by that
person.
 Disadvantages-the disadvantages of having a role
model is that by reading about them on the
internet or experiencing their behaviour could
make a person also act in that way and would
think its right to act like that. It can also become
an obsession to always want to know that they
celebrity has been up to in their life because
they would think by acting in a certain way or
talking to someone in a certain way could cause
a negative impact.
Racism-the belief that all members of each race possess
characteristics such as abilities and qualities that are specific to
that race. An example of racism for example people that join the
“KKK” are completely against black people because of their colour.
This would link to Q magazine as there could possibly be racism
against people within what they publish for example they could
feature white artists and bands other than black artists/bands.
Sexism- the belief that one sex is better than the other, especially
discrimination against women in particular, an example of sexism is
that “girls cant do the same things boys can” such as sports,
because they don’t believe that girls can achieve the possibilities
that boys can achieve. This would link to Q magazine as there could
possibly be sexism that could be published to the public

The front covers above suggest that Q magazine feature 57% of white
artists/bands on their front covers as it attracts the audience, which
connotes that, based on the selection of covers above, the magazine cover
a range of artists from a range of ethnic groups.
Male gaze- is the tendency to see the world
and women from the male perspective.
Cheryl Cole is seen here in a provocative way so that men –
particularly a pass along audience - spend longer ‘gazing’ at
the front cover and will buy the magazine.

where it enables people to register, look at the community features, use of the website
and law and jurisdiction, these are some ways that users will have to be aware of
copyright. Law and jurisdiction could be an affect that could be used against anyone that
is going to copyright for example varation, this implies that Bauer media will have to
verify their information where they will continue to use their service.
“If you are a rights owner (or acting on behalf of a rights owner) and believe that any
User Content infringes your copyright, you must provide us with a written notice by
email to legal@bauermedia.co.uk” - This connotes how the magazine of conscious of
ensuring they don’t use other IP without the correct permissions.
Offensive material- any published or broadcasted content that has been
shown to the public or on social media that is offensive, insulting or
upsetting to the public. An example of this would be saying something
offensive such as something to do with their personal appearance of judging
them by what they do or say. Q magazine ask for permission before any
offensive material has been made, if it happens and a member of the public
wouldn’t like anyone to see this type of information, then they would take
it down immediately and they would give out an apology to the people of
the public that were offended in any way.
Censorship- a figure of speech or public communication or any other sort of
information that may be considered harmful, sensitive or incorrect that are
encouraged by the governments. An example of this would be if you say an
offensive word to the public and they would consider that a censorship. For
Q magazine they use censorship by asking for the newspaper or magazines
permission before letting out any harmful material of language or
information.
Offensive material
Q magazine have used a Front cover that is
considered to have “offensive content”
within the magazine as the artist that is
displayed on the front cover is dressed
inappropriately which could be offensive to
readers.
The sexualised representation of the female
gender – though stereotypical according to
John Berger (1972) and how “men act,
women appear” – is risky and could open the
magazine up to complaints from female
readers especially as they would be
offended by how women have
stereotypically come across to the public
eye.
Representation
There are many people that are interested in different types of
magazines all over the world, specifically young adults and
teenagers. This could be because most magazines such as Q
magazine Mojo people as there could be a popular artist on the
front cover. These magazines can be very popular where readers
seem to know about it based on the music genre that is chosen of
the magazine. There also can be certain parts of a magazine that
can be lead to readers that could be offensive as there could be
incorrect information published to the public, this could affect the
reputation of the magazine as it could possibly become unpopular.
Furthermore magazines can be very enjoyable to read as it
produces information about popular artists and music genres.
Production Legal and Ethical Issues
before my magazine can be published to the public, there are some legal and ethical
issues that have to be investigated before doing so. Two of these are to publish the
organization so that it is professional, this will also include privacy to label accuracy.
Copyright- the legal right to be the only one to produce, publish and sell a book, a
video or anything on social media that has been created or brought out to the
public. an example of this would be brochures, books and other things on social
media that would be considered copyrighted. For Sound magazine, I am going to
use copyright by using pictures of a particular artist or band member. By using
different images, they will have to therefore ask the company for permission in
order to use the image.
The right to privacy- publishing content about different people, it is important to regulate
people’s privacy and what they purchase on the internet. In order to make sure of this, I will
have to ask the people for their permission to feature on my magazine.
Seditious and Criminal Libel- this is when something that is released on the internet is considered
offensive to the government and the people of the public. Criminal Libel is published information
that is released about someone that is considered negative to the public and which would create
a reputation for that person or company.

Issues
Discrimination-if an article is published and has signs of discrimination, this would
mean they are talking about an individuals race, colour, religion and gender. Examples
of discrimination would be racism, harassment and many others.
Children- people have to be careful about what they say about children in the media industry and
content that is released about them because they are considered innocent and vulnerable. It is
important to use permission from their parents/parent to use their information on the internet if
they are under the age of 18, then the parents or parent will then have to agree to the terms and
make sure that they are using necessary content that is appropriate for the magazine.
Accuracy-content that is published in a magazine must not be inaccurate, this means that the
information they produce such as written information or pictures they use must not be
misleading. This means that it must be accurate and not made up or extended. Furthermore, I
need to be accurate in the magazine I am creating because then I will be giving readers the
correct information that they are reading about within the magazine.

Legal and Ethical Issues
Contract Challenges: when looking through the content of the magazine, it goes through a
contract to the organisation so they will only use copyright on the things that they have created.
When the person/people sign the contract, this will then mean they have to stick to it and it must
not be changed in any way possible. This would also mean that they have control of some of the
rights they have made.
Copyright:Intellectual Property-before making the magazine, I had to research legal areas that I
can then be able to use a type of content in my magazine that I will be producing. Using this, they
will have to ask for permission to use particular content so it can be featured in the magazine and
so it will be safe from paying fines.
Privacy-when publishing content into my magazine, I will have to make sure that I limit people's
privacy that will be featured in the magazine. I will have to make sure that I ask for permission for
any personal details that will be featured before I publish the magazine and with the permission of
the person I would like to feature in the magazine. I have to also made sure not to include
anything negative information about that person so the magazine won't have a negative impact on
the readers and public.

has been placed. It has the ability to ensure the placement of
corrections when they are necessary to order to get the
information across to the editors.
 Harassment- at IPSO if a person is experiencing harassment by
journalists or if they are concerned that a piece of information
that they were going to produce would be false information or if
they don’t want the information to be published.
 About IPSO- it is a independent newspaper and magazine industry
of the UK, meaning they maintain and provide support for when
people complain about serious issues that have been made and
people that would find it offensive. IPSO are committed by
sorting out any issues or complaints that have been made, by
working with a newspaper and magazine industry to maintain the
freedom of authority of the news in an organising and effective
manner to succeed finding out the problem or issue.
Regulatory Bodies
The ASA, Advertising standards Authority is a UK advertising organisation
company that markets all types of media online. They provide codes that advertise
different types of companies. ASA works on complaints that are made from
different people about their privacy online to make sure that people using social
media don’t receive harmful or offensive advertisements. Their purpose and
strategy of the website and the company is to make different types of public
notices that are appropriate for the public eye to ensure that no one has any
offensive comments or concerns about what has been published. This would link
to Q magazine because they will have to provide advertising standards in order to
produce their magazine each month.

The target audience for kerrang is aimed at 14 to 21 year olds which are interested in in heavy metal/rock music. According to the socio- economic graph the target audience for Q magazine would be in category C because the target audience for Q magazine is aimed at mostly older people and adults that are interested in different music genres.
  • 35. For “Q” magazine, the target audience will be mainly aimed at young people and teenagers. I am predicting the information and published information on Q magazine. Q magazine produce content which young people and teenagers are interested in to make the magazine poplar so it can be known. From looking at the table from Bauer media pack, I have analysed that the highest amount of readers for Q are aged 15-24 years of age as the content produced in Q is appropriate for both young people and teenagers. For 70% of the readership to be in the ABC1 category, this also connotes how they have the spending power to afford a £4.00 magazine.

An example of this would be saying something offensive such as something to do with their personal appearance of judging them by what they do or say. Q magazine ask for permission before any offensive material has been made, if it happens and a member of the public wouldn’t like anyone to see this type of information, then they would take it down immediately and they would give out an apology to the people of the public that were offended in any way. Censorship- a figure of speech or public communication or any other sort of information that may be considered harmful, sensitive or incorrect that are encouraged by the governments. An example of this would be if you say an offensive word to the public and they would consider that a censorship. For Q magazine they use censorship by asking for the newspaper or magazines permission before letting out any harmful material of language or information.

In order to make sure of this, I will have to ask the people for their permission to feature on my magazine. Seditious and Criminal Libel- this is when something that is released on the internet is considered offensive to the government and the people of the public. Criminal Libel is published information that is released about someone that is considered negative to the public and which would create a reputation for that person or company.

IPSO are committed by sorting out any issues or complaints that have been made, by working with a newspaper and magazine industry to maintain the freedom of authority of the news in an organising and effective manner to succeed finding out the problem or issue.
