Slogan
Bauer’s slogan is “we think popular” this connotes that they like want to work with all
people this means that they want to appeal too all people and not to focus on just
one group. The use of the ”we” in the slogan connotes that not just the people in
charge but every one is working hard to make the viewers are interesting. Finally
“popular” signifies that Bauer knows what the views what and that the readers will
want to read their magazines.
Value:
Bauer medias four values are: create, collaborate, challenge and respect. By applying
by these four ideas it shows the public and audience how they work and giving the
audience hope that if they use these rules they will become just as successful.
History
Bauer Media was founded in 1875 by Ludolph Bauer who originally opened a print
shop in Hamburg specifically to produce business cards when he was 23. Ludolph
then launched a local advertising newspaper called Rothenburgersorter Zeitung. In
1926 he released a radio magazine, Rundfunk-Kritik, it seemed to be very popular as
over half a million copies were sold weekly. In 1953 Bauer’s first magazine was
launched, a fishing magazine called Angling Times as fishing was quite popular at the
time. In the 1990s Bauer Media Group started to publish magazines digitally. Since
2010 Yvonne Bauer has taken over and lead the family business to grow.

is a picture of the band
muse this picture is a

that they are strong
and powerful. This is
also shown by the back
ground image as it is of
the stars and connotes
that they are out of
this with their music.
Strapline
The strapline is the
“worlds greatest
music magazine” this
is denotes that the

mouth of issue
Q have advertised new artists

online to look at theses new
albums and therefore will become
more popular as people will like
that Q is advertising artists that
they like.
Cover lines
The use of the cover lines are to tell
the reader about what they are
going to be reading. However the
cover lines do not make it clean
about what people are going to read
as the titles are only there to draw
the reader in as the names of the
articles will interest the reader
enough to go and read the article.
Main header
The use of the main header connotes
that they are doing something new
and never seen before. Also the use of
the line “their biggest challenge yet”
insinuates that what their audience
have enjoyed so is nothing to what Is
coming.
Front cover Analysis
Sub image
The use of the sub
image is to highlight to
the readers a different
types of image
compared to the main
pictures which are
planed as this image is
taken from a gig
illustrating that the
magazine reports from
all different areas.
Heading
The header is an
important part of the
magazine as it has they
house styles of the
magazine on it
showing customers
that they are
professional and the
information that they
are providing is reliable
and the truth.
Main image
The main image of
the artist makes him
look depressed this
would suggest
something might be
irritating him and
readers will want to
know what this is.
Sub-heading
The article titles
are in places to the
buyers will know if
they acutely want
to buy this issue as
it might not be
what they want to
read about.
Sub-line
The use of the sub-
line is to
demonstrate what
the style of writing
will be for the article
and what they will
mainly be focused
on.
Contents Page Analysis
Background
The background of the
double page spread says
USA this would connote
that the singer is From
the USA and the “got the
love” title would imply
that that every one that
will read this article will
have the love for the
USA.
Main image
The use of the main
image shows the artist is
a powerful and strong
pose this give the non-
verbal suggestion of that
she has just done
something very
impressive. Making
readers intrigued to read
more about what she
has just done
Sub-line
The sub-line of the
article says two
different things
about her and the
readers will know
what they are going
to be reading about
as nothing is given
away. Giving more
insight but still
keeping it a mystery
Drop capital
The use of the
drop capital at
the start of the
article gives the
article a scene of
style and that the
this article will be
important as it
will remind the
reader of old
style passages of
text
DPS Analysis
Website
Q uses a selection
bar a two points on
there opening page
this is so the users
will always have an
easy and relaxed way
of navigating around
the website making
the user like the
website and the
magazine.
Also in this opening page
they have lots of pictures
this will make the reader
more interested than
just looking at word all
over the screen. But they
have also put a bit of
each article under the
pictures that is so the
reader will not just be
randomly clicking on
images they will know
what they are about to
read about.
The use of the
main colors
white and red
show the
viewers that
they are a
proper
business
company like
all the other
magazines an
newspapers
as the colors
red and white
make it seem
formal and
Form and Style• The colours that are used in Q magazine are red and white as these are two
colours are both easy to read from as people will do not struggle to read
these colours also these colours look professional so viewers will think that
this magazine is childish but provides proper information
• This front covers are laid out so the viewer will know what this magazine
will be focusing on and any side articles as this will be presented to the side
of the main image which will be advertising the main article.
• The font sizes will differ depending on what it is (title ,subheading or
articles). The title will have a bigger font to get the readers to read the issue
then articles will be smaller so the can fit all the information on the page
and to give it a proper look.
Also in Q magazine they will tend to repeat
some of the styles to keep it all familiar to the
audience. For example on most of the DPS pages
they will put in a drop capital at the start this
will be for the reader so they will know where to
start as there is a lot of writing on the page. It
will also be put a lot between paragraphs to
keep the reader reading as they might take this
opportunity to stop read but the drop capital
will draw them in to read more.
Genre
Q magazine
The main type of genre in Q magazine is most types of music as it will
cover what ever is the most popular music at the time this is why it it is
one of the most popular magazines. Also it means that they can have lots
of differ article’s. because Q do lots of different types of music it means
that they have a wide fan base as it will appeal to lot of people. However
they will not draw in as big of a rock fan base as Karrang because Karrang
only focuses on rock, so a lot of the people that prefer rock will just buy
kerrang.
Production Process
• Date of Publication-
Setting up a date for publication is the is the first thing that is needed to do. All this is, is the date at which you will publish your
magazine to the public. Once this date has been decided every one can get stared with different jobs.
• Managing the Schedule-
This is an important step that need to be done properly. In order to produce your magazine successfully, you will have to have a
successful schedule. If this goes wrong know one will know when they have to have their jobs done by and the date of publication
will not be met.
• Editorial and budgetary decision
This step is where an editing team put together and discuss the stories that will be covered in the next issue of the magazine.
After this is decided how much money they will put into each story that they are casting.
• Content Acquisition
This is where the company will decide where each bit of content will go this may be font page back page. Also they will chose
weather or not to drop or to keep all the articles to go in the magazine.
• Sub Editing
This will be where the back ground images and main images and style of writing will be chosen and read to be put into the
magazine.
• Page Layout
This is one of the finally stages and will bring together all the ideas and desertions that people have make to make it look like the
finally product.
• Proofreading
This is step in in place to make sure there are no spelling mistakes and that all the colours and writing make it easy to read.
• File Emailed to the Printer
This email will go to the printer to be finally printed and so people will be able to go and buy these copies in stores
• Distribution
All the magazines will go off into different trucks and vans to go to the stores where thy can be brought and so the company can
make money for all the work that they have put into this magazine.
Production Process for Q magazine
I did not get an email back from
Bauer media. So from what I have
looked at before I am assuming that
the production process much be
similar to the one that I researched.
Above the line
• Above the line is a phrase that link to mass marketing and that is more likely to be world wide marketing to
build a brands name. This type of marketing was will not targeted to a specific group of people but to all that
will view there branding. The information that the company will provide people with will simply show the
product they will not be trying to convert people too their band as they will all ready have a wide base of
supporters. For example this might be a brand like coca cola as they will do adverts but not to convert
people just to grow in popularity and to make sure that they will not lose any customers that they have.
• The main advantages of doing above the line marketing would be that it is a wider reach to people, it has a
better contact with the audience and defines the brand.
• The only disadvantage of this type of marketing would be that they convert as many people as they could.
Above the line pictures
Below the line
• Below the line marketing is specific to an audience for example this will be flyers in a local area, billboards
and the animated pages on and advising in London this will all be adapted to suite the are that they are in.
These advisements will not be so focused on expanding their name but will simply be wanting to bring
customers into their stores. Further more you can put less money into this types of branding because it will
not be broadcasted to the world it will just want the people living and passing through the area to come and
buy their products this will be good for the company because it will mean that their company name will get
out and be more likely to make more money.
• The disadvantage of below the line marketing is that the marketers will be limiting them selves to the one
group of people and less likely for the profits to change massively.
Below the line pictures
Guerrilla
• This is when a company spends minimal amounts of money to advertise them
selves in unconventional manner, this would include public attention in a
memorable or high energy promotion. This kind of advisement will tend to be
different to all ordinary types of advertisements such as billboards and on
televisions. The main idea of this type of advertisement it so it will stand out
and stay in peoples heads when they are walking about.
• For example before the release of the film Jurassic world waterloo turned the
station into a Jurassic place with dinosaurs and shops named are the film this
way as people are walking to work are coming through the station they will
have this idea that this film will be good and that they should watch it because
they have put this fun thing in a very ordinary place.
Viral Marketing
It is a method of marketing where by the consumer
are encouraged to share information about a
companies goods and serveries via the internet.
Viral marketing encourages users to pass messages
onto other users
3 components:
1. Messenger
2. Message its self
3. Environment
All three need to be effective in order for viral
marketing to be successful. The role of viral
marketing is to create a marketing buzz
Advantages:
- Customers are doing the advertising for you –
cheaper, lower cost.
- Faster growth
- Mainstream media exposure
- Rapid lead generation
Disadvantages
- Its not targeted to specific people so it will cost a
lot.
An example of viral marketing would be the film straight outta Compton the
film did not plan to do viral marketing but it became a hashtag across social
media that was used. People were putting the hashtag straight outta, and then
the place that they wanted to say this was good for the film as this was viral
and because the last word was changed it meant that it to not just apply to
one group of people but to everyone.
Magazine marketing
• In fact, it's an affordable
medium for almost every firm.
The average cost of outdoor
advertising is around £200 per
week for a standard 48 sheet
billboard. An ad on the side of a
bus stop on a busy high street
could cost about £300 for two
weeks' exposure.
Q magazine have a YouTube
channel this will be used as
a substitute for the
magazine as people will go
onto YouTube to see more
about the magazine.
Demographics
Demographics is statistical relating to particular groups with in the population.
The demographics of Q magazine is A, B, C1 this is because it is aimed at high
end people with more money such as people in management and in the
higher end of paid jobs. The reason that I think that Q will mainly be aiming as
the higher end of social status is because one issue of the magazine costs
£4.70 and this is quite a lot of a magazine so it will be aimed at people with
more money.
Psychographics
These features above are all things that Q magazine want to be doing when running their
company as they want all their works to go through these situations this is because it will
help the company to produce the best magazine that they can and to draw in the most
amount of customers possible this is because both these ideas will help the company to
do will in it market and to also highly achieve what they are trying to do. I mainly think
that Q magazine will be in the areas of succeeders and aspirers.
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
Q magazine make sure that they have all of the above in their
place of work this is so they can work to their full ability and
is will mean that the company will work to its full and proper
standard.
The people working at the top of Q will have all og the
features as this is what they will need to do the best
work possible and to produce work at a high standard.
Every person that is working for Q will need most of these ideas
listed at the bottom because a lot of these ideas every living
people needs to work well
On this next one its almost just as important as the ideas listed
below because if people don’t have this in their working place
they will not work well are to their full ability
For this step it will help people to work harder if they have these in
their lives so Q will encourage people to have these in their lives.
People that have theses features in their personality will
be someone working hard and that have respect for the
people around them this will make them good leaders.
Uses and gratification-UGT
• What people do with media:
1. To be informed and educated
2. In order to identify with the characters and situation
3. To be entertained
4. To enable themselves to socially interact with others
5. To escape from their daily troubles
6. The consumer are take an actual part and role in the activity that is watching the media.
In Q magazine they will link to numbers 2,3 and 5 this is because Q magazine is a
music magazine and it does not try to teach people about stuff it is just there to
make sure that people know about what is going on with other people and just
for the readers enjoyment.
The Hartley classification
Institution are obliged not only to speak about an audience, but- crucially for them to talk to one as well they
need not only to respond to one group from Hartley’s classifications. So company's need to make sure that
they do not discriminate against any of the groups above or they could be sued and this would not be ethical.
So when Q magazine make their magazine the need to sure that the content that they put into the magazine
can at least relate to some of these groups because it will help them to draw in more readers of they know the
type of people that they are aiming for. But they will not reveal this target audience as it would be unethical
because lots of readers will still not fit into their target audience and they will lose readers.
https://www.slideshare.net/ecclestona/audience-4428681
There are 7 socially grouped categories
when it comes to identifying audience.
• Self
• Gender
• Age
• Class
• Ethnicity
• Family
• Nation
Legal Issues/Copyright
Copyright ©- is when there is a legal right which lasts for a certain amount of time
so you can’t print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic or musical
material that already exists.
The copy write law changed in 1998 allowing writers and photographers to have
their on rights for photocopying in a paper form.
If someone was to copy or take ideas from the person that had produced the idea
the person that copied it would be fined and anything that they had produced with
the idea in it would have to be taken down straight away.
However if the person did not have the copyright law on their work any can take
their work and use it and can not be fined for it unless in a small chance they win a
court case.
About ABC:

the time of print. It also protects any advertisers using the magazine. “members of
ABC = nothing in the magazine may be reproduced in whole or in part without the
written permission of the publishers” – in this case Bauer.
Q magazine have all of the necessary legal information to make sure that none of
their content and ideas and be take or copied. Unless Bauer or Q magazine give

Free sheets
• Free sheets are daily newspapers and magazines which are distributed
around and sold for free. They will often be found in places that are central
such as by stations or in town centres. They can also be posted to people
addresses where they will have been produced by the local government.
• Free sheets will include a lot of advisements as this is the way the he
magazines and newspapers will make there money because the distribute
the articles for free.
• Metro was established in 1999, it was made so that morning commenters
would have something to read.it was first only in London near it transport
nd over further time it was published in over 50 Uk city's
Red Top tabloid
• This is a type of newspaper that has that traditional red header that is used to bring in readers as
its bright and in a bold font this design is known by people and because of this it means that
readers will continue to by the magazines as they know that the content will have the same
structure but with different content this was it will stay interesting and it will slowly increase in
the amount of users that it has.
• The type of content that these types of magazines will contain will be soft news such as top gossip
and will avoid talking about about the political issues this is because red top tabloids content will
not always be 100% true as they will twist words and things that have been said to make it more
interesting for the reads.
Broadsheet
• Broadsheet is a different type of news paper that tends to be printed
on large sheets of paper which will contain hard news with facts and
large amounts of information. They reason for the papers being so
much bigger is because of the content in them. They are properly
written articles that have be written only based on facts with small
amounts speculation in order to not cause any conflict with people as
they need to back up any statement that they have made.
• Examples of Broadsheet newspapers in Britain are, the Sunday times,
The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian
Connotations of the name of the publication
• The verbal code of ‘the sun’ could imply that the magazine is needed
in every day life this is because the sun it is the most important thing
in the world as live would not be able to exist is there was no sun. So
the reason for the sun being called what it is, is because they want
people to thing that this newspaper is the sent of life and you can not
live with out it. ‘The Sun’ also might suggest the content that the
newspaper has as the content is soft news and light which is just like
the sun.
Facts
• ‘The Sun’ used to be known as ‘The Daily Herald’ this was first
lunched on he 25th January 1911. The newspaper was then shut down
in 1664 and then re-launched as ‘The Sun’
• ‘The Sun’ tends to follow the labor side of political arguments as the
owners and publishers seem to think that the labor sided arguments
will bring in more customer.
• The Sun is part of News Group Newspaper which is owned by News
Corporation Group. The CEO of this company is Rupert Murdoch.
https://www.thesun.co.uk
Ownership structure
• News Corporation is the Suns publisher. They also own a lot of other major
world newspapers that they own such as Fox, GQ and daily telegraph.
• Within the News Corporation or as they call it in England, News UK they have
different sub categories which will have different types of journalists that will be
responsible and conduct all that is published. Such as Sport, politics, travel and
Gossip.
Price
• The price of The Sun will change with each issue that is released. It will cost
between the range of 50p from Monday to Friday and on a Saturday and
Sunday it will tends to be around the area of 70p and 90p
• The Sun will always try to keep its prices as low as possible this is so they
can always have an upper hand against other red top tabloids which will e
marketing the prices higher. Such as the daily mirror that will sell its issues
mid week at 70p and then on the weekend will sell them from £1 to £1.40.
• However if there is an event on that might make the magazine more
popular then they might increase the price just for this one time. This
might be for a football world cup or a royal wedding
https://www.cashfloat.co.uk/blog/technology-
innovation/sun-newspaper/
Genre of the Newspaper
• The sun new will mostly cover soft news instead the
hard news. Most of the stories will be about celebrities
and the top gossip, as this is what the reader will want
to read about, the information will tend to be irrelevant
but people are interested in what other people are up
to.
• The pages in the newspaper will contain lots of image
and less text. This will put them in the classes of D- E in
the social – economic groups. Suggesting that a lot of
the users are going education and they do not have a
full time job.
• The articles in the newspaper will not have a lot of
writing as they get to the point quickly as the reader do
not want to spend a lot of time reading its just a quick
read.
• The headers of each of the article will tend to have a
side of humor to them. This is so the articles and the
comments made are not to serous suggesting that the
people reading might think that the people being talked
about are better than them and the want to make them
seem more human.
Circulation
• The current circulation for the Sun is 3,915,000 this shows how well
known and how well advertised they are in the UK. Furthermore
there website brings in lots of different readers form customers then
getting the app which brings in around 13 million.
• The chart shows that the printed articles do a lot better than
readership on the PC, even though the PC version has more than four
times the views it still does not make them more money and the
physical copies.
News Selection
• The Suns news will not look into the hard topics of news they will
keep it soft. But because of the name that they have built for them
selves if they do try to tackle more hard new they will not be taken
seriously and it will be looked past.
• The Sun will tend to have a range of different genres. This will all be in
different sections of the paper, the genres might cover themes such
as sport, celebrity gossip and politics. The Sun will always try to cover
the top stories at the time in order to keep customers.
Website Analysis
The website is a very simple layout this makes it easy for views to
navigate around the website than to read different articles and get
back to the home page with out having to go though the whole
website.
The menu bar is clear and at the top of the page no matter which page
you are on in the website it will always be there, so users can change
what they want to look at easily.
Users are also able to sign in, this gives them access to that they have
asked to get. So if they like looking at sport article, when they login
they will get all the up to date articles on sport and the people in sport.
There is also an integrative side to the website where they can
comment and like other peoples comments. The comments will be
beneath each article so each of the comments will be relevant to each
of the articles.
Over all the website demonstrates a way at which a website can
display lots of different ideas and the content that the website has to
offer all with the users being able to navigate with out any problems
and feel overwhelmed with all the content.
Front Cover Analysis
• The front page of a news paper in always important so The Sun have
different methods to make sure that they can always draw in customers.
• The first method that I have identified is the main headline and that it is
always in capitals and in bold this way it is impossible to walk past it and
not read what is on the front. This is good marketing because the headline
is always something interesting and that people will most likely want to
read about.
• They also put other articles on the side of the page this is another method
of drawing in people as they put the start of the article underneath, this
way if customers walk past and start to read the start of the articles they
will want to finish it, and will not be able to help but buy it.
• The also have the bright and bold header which is the brand of newspaper
and people know this to be The Sun and will continue to buy it as they
know that they can trust it as the style remains the same.
Double Page Spread Analysis
• The use of the headline is a play n words as they have
put ball on the end of global this way it links to this
article. This is a good way of attracting readers to the
article as it makes the article seem more fun even
though global warming is not normally a fun matter but
it is talking about something different
• The image in the middle of the page shows who the
article is about with short facts about them. This is good
as this is what people will be drawn to read first as its n
the middle of the page. Also the images have a
background image of the world which will make people
think that this is not just a matter about two football
managers coming together (which is what it is) but it is
a world issue.
• There is little text on this article which will bring in the
types of readers that they expect will be buying this
magazine. They will properly be working class people
that do not have the highest income.
Distribution
• The Sun is distributed in mainly the UK mainly though printed copies
but also digital as well. The Sun website offers people to subscribe to
the Sun this can also be done though the their application. They will
be sold in all different stores around the UK such as WHSmith's,
Sainsbury’s and corner stores.
• The average circulation is 3,915,000 for the The Sun as they are wildly
known. Also they will have over 2.5million users on there application
which is where this biggest amount of customers will be drawn in.
Advertised Products
• The advertising in The Sun are designed so that they are suited to
their readers. The demographics that the customers would be in are
groups D and E. Most of the adverts will show how people can get
discounts on products or save money in areas that are expensive.
• This is important that users will read theses for the the sake of the
magazine because most of the money the magazines is though
advertisements so if readers do not like them then the magazine will
not make as much profit as the company's will pull out.
Complaint Procedure
The Sun have an area on their website where they
customers can go to complain about any of the
content that they have read in their articles. Due to
the editors code changing often they can get away
with a lot of the complaints that are made against
them, this is because as long as they are following the
up to date editors code they do not have to respond
to a lot of what people complain about. The editors
code will not always cover everything so it is free for
magazine company's to work around it.
They are currently using the complaint procedure
from IPSO. There is a link at the bottom of the page
that will take customers to the IPSO page.
If there are other issues for example with their
website and not their articles there are other forms
to fill out.
Audience Theories
• Katz: This is all about how they can draw in more readers with out having to make the content
good. The idea is that if you put something in the magazine that the consumers ether has, can
learn or has experience of. These are good things to have in your magazine as if the reader
has any of these in the article then they will be likely to read it. If they put something that is
different that people do not know much about in the magazine the readers will interested in
what it is and will want to learn about it as long as the subject is interesting.
• Hartley: this important when looking at the target audience as what he looked at was gender,
class and age this is just what publishers will be looking into when creating there magazine.
There reason for magazines looking into this so carefully when creating a magazine is because
without these then the magazine would be all over the place, for example if you do not look
at age when writing a magazine then you might put to complicated words in that will
probably bore the reader that has an age between 18 and 26. The same goes for writing it for
a younger audience that older people will want it to be more suited to them. This is why
magazines will have there set age ranges when putting them together. With out Hartley
people would not know weather or not the articles in the magazine are written to a standard
that is suitable for them to read.
• Maslow: Maslow suggests that people can be drawn to media types
based on their need and the needs to satisfy their needs. Maslow put
together a model together called a hierarchy of needs and was
developed to show all the different circumstances that work for all
different peoples needs. The Sun will use this to include content in
their magazine. The content could be anything in the magazine as long
as it can link and relate to a group of people. So if Suns content and link
to these groups straight away people will end up reading and enjoying
what they are reading. They will tend to make the articles more general
and speculate about what is happing this way they can make sure that
they can make the content more interesting as people always want to
know more about what is going on and if they can make readers relate
then they will believe and take in more of the content.
Audience Theories
Socio-economic Demographics: The socio-economic audience
theory says that different people based on their jobs is split into
different category’s. The groups are split up into based on how
much money the individual is making. For example someone in
the A group would be earning 50,000 a year and in upper class.
They would be buying a magazine or newspaper for a bit more
than someone in the groups of C1, C2 and D as the people in
group E would not be buying these as they are privileges. Because
these are the biggest groups the Sun aims to advertise to these
groups as this is the way they can make the most money.
Psychographics
• Psychographics divides the market into groups
based on their personality traits and class. This
further deduces an assumption on different
types of products and the brand that they might
have. Picking out peoples classes, how they
should live their daily lives and that their
lifestyles choices decide an individual group that
is targeted by media companies to improve the
products attraction to people.
• The Sun magazine would be placed in the
category of Strugglers this is because the
majority of the buyers are in the demographic of
D-E jobs. Also because the price of the news
paper is so low it means that they are able to
afford the paper and they get their moneys
worth as the other magazines like the daily mail
will have more false information.
Marketing
• The Sun get involved advert was displayed in 2015. It showed people
that The Sun is for all people no matter what job and they will always
publish new that is real, and that people want to know about.
However because they have a narrator walking around busy streets
among other working class people this makes people seem the same
as The Sun and looks more into not just D-E but also C2.
• The Sun also set up an £9.50 annual holiday plan which over 45
million people have loved this will link to a wide group of people as
for the smaller things they have a Sun Goals app which give people
insight to all football news.
Synergy
• Synergy is when two or more companies come together to work on
different projects and to work for a conmen interest that will benefit
them both. The Sun uses different social to promote and advertise
their product. The social media platforms allow then The Sun to be
able to interact with the readers but also it allows them to reach out
to a wide range of different types of groups of people this way they
can have the widest fan base bringing in more money.
• The Sun mainly uses social media platforms to work with is because
the way that information is shared throughout the world for example
all images can be shared by people on twitter and on Facebook
mainly. For ample the twitter page has been liked by over 1.3 million
people.
However if the person did not have the copyright law on their work any can take
their work and use it and can not be fined for it unless in a small chance they win a
court case.
About ABC:
ABC delivers certification the dater in the content with in the magazine meets
industry standers. It verifies all the dater in a magazine to make sure it is correct at
the time of print. It also protects any advertisers using the magazine. “members of
ABC = nothing in the magazine may be reproduced in whole or in part without the
written permission of the publishers” – in this case Bauer.
The Sun news paper make sure to follow by all of these rules when working and for
all the information that they put up or any images that they upload will by
copywritten and they will have acquired it legally though all the proper procedures.
LO1- conclusion
• Throughout out doing this LO1 it has shown me all about the different
types of magazine and what they do to make sure that the have the
widest audience. I mainly looked into red top tabloids specifically The
Sun. I now understand how this magazine uses audience theories to
make sure that all their readers will enjoy the content and so that
they will not be offended. Finally I looked out the layout of their
magazines and website and what they do to make sure that people
pick up the issue and do not look past it to buy a different magazines.

Brand Ideology/Ethos Slogan Bauer’s slogan is “we think popular” this connotes that they like want to work with all people this means that they want to appeal too all people and not to focus on just one group. Finally “popular” signifies that Bauer knows what the views what and that the readers will want to read their magazines. • 12. Main image/back ground On the main image this is a picture of the band muse this picture is a head shot. The use of this head shot implies that they are strong and powerful. This is also shown by the back ground image as it is of the stars and connotes that they are out of this with their music. Strapline The strapline is the “worlds greatest music magazine” this is denotes that the music that they are going to be advertising will only be the best. This also connotes that only best magazine will advertise the best music therefor they will be the best magazine to buy. Convergence, barcode, price and mouth of issue Q have advertised new artists albums this is so they views will go online to look at theses new albums and therefore will become more popular as people will like that Q is advertising artists that they like. Cover lines The use of the cover lines are to tell the reader about what they are going to be reading. However the cover lines do not make it clean about what people are going to read as the titles are only there to draw the reader in as the names of the articles will interest the reader enough to go and read the article. Main header The use of the main header connotes that they are doing something new and never seen before. Also the use of the line “their biggest challenge yet” insinuates that what their audience have enjoyed so is nothing to what Is coming. Front cover Analysis
  • 13. Sub image The use of the sub image is to highlight to the readers a different types of image compared to the main pictures which are planed as this image is taken from a gig illustrating that the magazine reports from all different areas. Heading The header is an important part of the magazine as it has they house styles of the magazine on it showing customers that they are professional and the information that they are providing is reliable and the truth. Main image The main image of the artist makes him look depressed this would suggest something might be irritating him and readers will want to know what this is. Sub-heading The article titles are in places to the buyers will know if they acutely want to buy this issue as it might not be what they want to read about. Sub-line The use of the sub- line is to demonstrate what the style of writing will be for the article and what they will mainly be focused on. Contents Page Analysis
  • 14. Background The background of the double page spread says USA this would connote that the singer is From the USA and the “got the love” title would imply that that every one that will read this article will have the love for the USA. Main image The use of the main image shows the artist is a powerful and strong pose this give the non- verbal suggestion of that she has just done something very impressive. Making readers intrigued to read more about what she has just done Sub-line The sub-line of the article says two different things about her and the readers will know what they are going to be reading about as nothing is given away. Giving more insight but still keeping it a mystery Drop capital The use of the drop capital at the start of the article gives the article a scene of style and that the this article will be important as it will remind the reader of old style passages of text DPS Analysis
  • 15. Website Q uses a selection bar a two points on there opening page this is so the users will always have an easy and relaxed way of navigating around the website making the user like the website and the magazine. Also in this opening page they have lots of pictures this will make the reader more interested than just looking at word all over the screen. But they have also put a bit of each article under the pictures that is so the reader will not just be randomly clicking on images they will know what they are about to read about. The use of the main colors white and red show the viewers that they are a proper business company like all the other magazines an newspapers as the colors red and white make it seem formal and
  • 16. Form and Style• The colours that are used in Q magazine are red and white as these are two colours are both easy to read from as people will do not struggle to read these colours also these colours look professional so viewers will think that this magazine is childish but provides proper information • This front covers are laid out so the viewer will know what this magazine will be focusing on and any side articles as this will be presented to the side of the main image which will be advertising the main article. • The font sizes will differ depending on what it is (title ,subheading or articles). The title will have a bigger font to get the readers to read the issue then articles will be smaller so the can fit all the information on the page and to give it a proper look. Also in Q magazine they will tend to repeat some of the styles to keep it all familiar to the audience. For example on most of the DPS pages they will put in a drop capital at the start this will be for the reader so they will know where to start as there is a lot of writing on the page. It will also be put a lot between paragraphs to keep the reader reading as they might take this opportunity to stop read but the drop capital will draw them in to read more.
  • 17. Genre Q magazine The main type of genre in Q magazine is most types of music as it will cover what ever is the most popular music at the time this is why it it is one of the most popular magazines. Also it means that they can have lots of differ article’s. because Q do lots of different types of music it means that they have a wide fan base as it will appeal to lot of people. However they will not draw in as big of a rock fan base as Karrang because Karrang only focuses on rock, so a lot of the people that prefer rock will just buy kerrang.
  • 18. Production Process • Date of Publication- Setting up a date for publication is the is the first thing that is needed to do. All this is, is the date at which you will publish your magazine to the public. Once this date has been decided every one can get stared with different jobs. • Managing the Schedule- This is an important step that need to be done properly. In order to produce your magazine successfully, you will have to have a successful schedule. If this goes wrong know one will know when they have to have their jobs done by and the date of publication will not be met. • Editorial and budgetary decision This step is where an editing team put together and discuss the stories that will be covered in the next issue of the magazine. After this is decided how much money they will put into each story that they are casting. • Content Acquisition This is where the company will decide where each bit of content will go this may be font page back page. Also they will chose weather or not to drop or to keep all the articles to go in the magazine. • Sub Editing This will be where the back ground images and main images and style of writing will be chosen and read to be put into the magazine. • Page Layout This is one of the finally stages and will bring together all the ideas and desertions that people have make to make it look like the finally product. • Proofreading This is step in in place to make sure there are no spelling mistakes and that all the colours and writing make it easy to read. • File Emailed to the Printer This email will go to the printer to be finally printed and so people will be able to go and buy these copies in stores • Distribution All the magazines will go off into different trucks and vans to go to the stores where thy can be brought and so the company can make money for all the work that they have put into this magazine.
  • 19. Production Process for Q magazine I did not get an email back from Bauer media. So from what I have looked at before I am assuming that the production process much be similar to the one that I researched.
  • 20. Above the line • Above the line is a phrase that link to mass marketing and that is more likely to be world wide marketing to build a brands name. This type of marketing was will not targeted to a specific group of people but to all that will view there branding. The information that the company will provide people with will simply show the product they will not be trying to convert people too their band as they will all ready have a wide base of supporters. For example this might be a brand like coca cola as they will do adverts but not to convert people just to grow in popularity and to make sure that they will not lose any customers that they have. • The main advantages of doing above the line marketing would be that it is a wider reach to people, it has a better contact with the audience and defines the brand. • The only disadvantage of this type of marketing would be that they convert as many people as they could.
  • 21. Above the line pictures
  • 22. Below the line • Below the line marketing is specific to an audience for example this will be flyers in a local area, billboards and the animated pages on and advising in London this will all be adapted to suite the are that they are in. These advisements will not be so focused on expanding their name but will simply be wanting to bring customers into their stores. Further more you can put less money into this types of branding because it will not be broadcasted to the world it will just want the people living and passing through the area to come and buy their products this will be good for the company because it will mean that their company name will get out and be more likely to make more money. • The disadvantage of below the line marketing is that the marketers will be limiting them selves to the one group of people and less likely for the profits to change massively.
  • 23. Below the line pictures
  • 24. Guerrilla • This is when a company spends minimal amounts of money to advertise them selves in unconventional manner, this would include public attention in a memorable or high energy promotion. This kind of advisement will tend to be different to all ordinary types of advertisements such as billboards and on televisions. The main idea of this type of advertisement it so it will stand out and stay in peoples heads when they are walking about. • For example before the release of the film Jurassic world waterloo turned the station into a Jurassic place with dinosaurs and shops named are the film this way as people are walking to work are coming through the station they will have this idea that this film will be good and that they should watch it because they have put this fun thing in a very ordinary place.
  • 25. Viral Marketing It is a method of marketing where by the consumer are encouraged to share information about a companies goods and serveries via the internet. Viral marketing encourages users to pass messages onto other users 3 components: 1. Messenger 2. Message its self 3. Environment All three need to be effective in order for viral marketing to be successful. The role of viral marketing is to create a marketing buzz Advantages: - Customers are doing the advertising for you – cheaper, lower cost. - Faster growth - Mainstream media exposure - Rapid lead generation Disadvantages - Its not targeted to specific people so it will cost a lot. An example of viral marketing would be the film straight outta Compton the film did not plan to do viral marketing but it became a hashtag across social media that was used. People were putting the hashtag straight outta, and then the place that they wanted to say this was good for the film as this was viral and because the last word was changed it meant that it to not just apply to one group of people but to everyone.
  • 26. Magazine marketing • In fact, it's an affordable medium for almost every firm. The average cost of outdoor advertising is around £200 per week for a standard 48 sheet billboard. An ad on the side of a bus stop on a busy high street could cost about £300 for two weeks' exposure. Q magazine have a YouTube channel this will be used as a substitute for the magazine as people will go onto YouTube to see more about the magazine.
  • 27. Demographics Demographics is statistical relating to particular groups with in the population. The demographics of Q magazine is A, B, C1 this is because it is aimed at high end people with more money such as people in management and in the higher end of paid jobs. The reason that I think that Q will mainly be aiming as the higher end of social status is because one issue of the magazine costs £4.70 and this is quite a lot of a magazine so it will be aimed at people with more money.
  • 28. Psychographics These features above are all things that Q magazine want to be doing when running their company as they want all their works to go through these situations this is because it will help the company to produce the best magazine that they can and to draw in the most amount of customers possible this is because both these ideas will help the company to do will in it market and to also highly achieve what they are trying to do. I mainly think that Q magazine will be in the areas of succeeders and aspirers.
  • 29. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Q magazine make sure that they have all of the above in their place of work this is so they can work to their full ability and is will mean that the company will work to its full and proper standard. The people working at the top of Q will have all og the features as this is what they will need to do the best work possible and to produce work at a high standard. Every person that is working for Q will need most of these ideas listed at the bottom because a lot of these ideas every living people needs to work well On this next one its almost just as important as the ideas listed below because if people don’t have this in their working place they will not work well are to their full ability For this step it will help people to work harder if they have these in their lives so Q will encourage people to have these in their lives. People that have theses features in their personality will be someone working hard and that have respect for the people around them this will make them good leaders.
  • 30. Uses and gratification-UGT • What people do with media: 1. To be informed and educated 2. In order to identify with the characters and situation 3. To be entertained 4. To enable themselves to socially interact with others 5. To escape from their daily troubles 6. The consumer are take an actual part and role in the activity that is watching the media. In Q magazine they will link to numbers 2,3 and 5 this is because Q magazine is a music magazine and it does not try to teach people about stuff it is just there to make sure that people know about what is going on with other people and just for the readers enjoyment.
  • 31. The Hartley classification Institution are obliged not only to speak about an audience, but- crucially for them to talk to one as well they need not only to respond to one group from Hartley’s classifications. So company's need to make sure that they do not discriminate against any of the groups above or they could be sued and this would not be ethical. So when Q magazine make their magazine the need to sure that the content that they put into the magazine can at least relate to some of these groups because it will help them to draw in more readers of they know the type of people that they are aiming for. But they will not reveal this target audience as it would be unethical because lots of readers will still not fit into their target audience and they will lose readers. https://www.slideshare.net/ecclestona/audience-4428681 There are 7 socially grouped categories when it comes to identifying audience. • Self • Gender • Age • Class • Ethnicity • Family • Nation
  • 32. Legal Issues/Copyright Copyright ©- is when there is a legal right which lasts for a certain amount of time so you can’t print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic or musical material that already exists. The copy write law changed in 1998 allowing writers and photographers to have their on rights for photocopying in a paper form. If someone was to copy or take ideas from the person that had produced the idea the person that copied it would be fined and anything that they had produced with the idea in it would have to be taken down straight away. However if the person did not have the copyright law on their work any can take their work and use it and can not be fined for it unless in a small chance they win a court case. About ABC: ABC delivers certification the dater in the content with in the magazine meets industry standers. It verifies all the dater in a magazine to make sure it is correct at the time of print. It also protects any advertisers using the magazine. “members of ABC = nothing in the magazine may be reproduced in whole or in part without the written permission of the publishers” – in this case Bauer. Q magazine have all of the necessary legal information to make sure that none of their content and ideas and be take or copied. Unless Bauer or Q magazine give their permission to do so.
  • 33. Free sheets • Free sheets are daily newspapers and magazines which are distributed around and sold for free. They will often be found in places that are central such as by stations or in town centres. They can also be posted to people addresses where they will have been produced by the local government. • Free sheets will include a lot of advisements as this is the way the he magazines and newspapers will make there money because the distribute the articles for free. • Metro was established in 1999, it was made so that morning commenters would have something to read.it was first only in London near it transport nd over further time it was published in over 50 Uk city's
  • 34. Red Top tabloid • This is a type of newspaper that has that traditional red header that is used to bring in readers as its bright and in a bold font this design is known by people and because of this it means that readers will continue to by the magazines as they know that the content will have the same structure but with different content this was it will stay interesting and it will slowly increase in the amount of users that it has. • The type of content that these types of magazines will contain will be soft news such as top gossip and will avoid talking about about the political issues this is because red top tabloids content will not always be 100% true as they will twist words and things that have been said to make it more interesting for the reads.
  • 35. Broadsheet • Broadsheet is a different type of news paper that tends to be printed on large sheets of paper which will contain hard news with facts and large amounts of information. They reason for the papers being so much bigger is because of the content in them. They are properly written articles that have be written only based on facts with small amounts speculation in order to not cause any conflict with people as they need to back up any statement that they have made. • Examples of Broadsheet newspapers in Britain are, the Sunday times, The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian
  • 36. Connotations of the name of the publication • The verbal code of ‘the sun’ could imply that the magazine is needed in every day life this is because the sun it is the most important thing in the world as live would not be able to exist is there was no sun. So the reason for the sun being called what it is, is because they want people to thing that this newspaper is the sent of life and you can not live with out it. ‘The Sun’ also might suggest the content that the newspaper has as the content is soft news and light which is just like the sun.
  • 37. Facts • ‘The Sun’ used to be known as ‘The Daily Herald’ this was first lunched on he 25th January 1911. The newspaper was then shut down in 1664 and then re-launched as ‘The Sun’ • ‘The Sun’ tends to follow the labor side of political arguments as the owners and publishers seem to think that the labor sided arguments will bring in more customer. • The Sun is part of News Group Newspaper which is owned by News Corporation Group. The CEO of this company is Rupert Murdoch. https://www.thesun.co.uk
  • 38. Ownership structure • News Corporation is the Suns publisher. They also own a lot of other major world newspapers that they own such as Fox, GQ and daily telegraph. • Within the News Corporation or as they call it in England, News UK they have different sub categories which will have different types of journalists that will be responsible and conduct all that is published. Such as Sport, politics, travel and Gossip.
  • 39. Price • The price of The Sun will change with each issue that is released. It will cost between the range of 50p from Monday to Friday and on a Saturday and Sunday it will tends to be around the area of 70p and 90p • The Sun will always try to keep its prices as low as possible this is so they can always have an upper hand against other red top tabloids which will e marketing the prices higher. Such as the daily mirror that will sell its issues mid week at 70p and then on the weekend will sell them from £1 to £1.40. • However if there is an event on that might make the magazine more popular then they might increase the price just for this one time. This might be for a football world cup or a royal wedding https://www.cashfloat.co.uk/blog/technology- innovation/sun-newspaper/
  • 40. Genre of the Newspaper • The sun new will mostly cover soft news instead the hard news. Most of the stories will be about celebrities and the top gossip, as this is what the reader will want to read about, the information will tend to be irrelevant but people are interested in what other people are up to. • The pages in the newspaper will contain lots of image and less text. This will put them in the classes of D- E in the social – economic groups. Suggesting that a lot of the users are going education and they do not have a full time job. • The articles in the newspaper will not have a lot of writing as they get to the point quickly as the reader do not want to spend a lot of time reading its just a quick read. • The headers of each of the article will tend to have a side of humor to them. This is so the articles and the comments made are not to serous suggesting that the people reading might think that the people being talked about are better than them and the want to make them seem more human.
  • 41. Circulation • The current circulation for the Sun is 3,915,000 this shows how well known and how well advertised they are in the UK. Furthermore there website brings in lots of different readers form customers then getting the app which brings in around 13 million. • The chart shows that the printed articles do a lot better than readership on the PC, even though the PC version has more than four times the views it still does not make them more money and the physical copies.
  • 42. News Selection • The Suns news will not look into the hard topics of news they will keep it soft. But because of the name that they have built for them selves if they do try to tackle more hard new they will not be taken seriously and it will be looked past. • The Sun will tend to have a range of different genres. This will all be in different sections of the paper, the genres might cover themes such as sport, celebrity gossip and politics. The Sun will always try to cover the top stories at the time in order to keep customers.
  • 43. Website Analysis The website is a very simple layout this makes it easy for views to navigate around the website than to read different articles and get back to the home page with out having to go though the whole website. The menu bar is clear and at the top of the page no matter which page you are on in the website it will always be there, so users can change what they want to look at easily. Users are also able to sign in, this gives them access to that they have asked to get. So if they like looking at sport article, when they login they will get all the up to date articles on sport and the people in sport. There is also an integrative side to the website where they can comment and like other peoples comments. The comments will be beneath each article so each of the comments will be relevant to each of the articles. Over all the website demonstrates a way at which a website can display lots of different ideas and the content that the website has to offer all with the users being able to navigate with out any problems and feel overwhelmed with all the content.
  • 44. Front Cover Analysis • The front page of a news paper in always important so The Sun have different methods to make sure that they can always draw in customers. • The first method that I have identified is the main headline and that it is always in capitals and in bold this way it is impossible to walk past it and not read what is on the front. This is good marketing because the headline is always something interesting and that people will most likely want to read about. • They also put other articles on the side of the page this is another method of drawing in people as they put the start of the article underneath, this way if customers walk past and start to read the start of the articles they will want to finish it, and will not be able to help but buy it. • The also have the bright and bold header which is the brand of newspaper and people know this to be The Sun and will continue to buy it as they know that they can trust it as the style remains the same.
  • 45. Double Page Spread Analysis • The use of the headline is a play n words as they have put ball on the end of global this way it links to this article. This is a good way of attracting readers to the article as it makes the article seem more fun even though global warming is not normally a fun matter but it is talking about something different • The image in the middle of the page shows who the article is about with short facts about them. This is good as this is what people will be drawn to read first as its n the middle of the page. Also the images have a background image of the world which will make people think that this is not just a matter about two football managers coming together (which is what it is) but it is a world issue. • There is little text on this article which will bring in the types of readers that they expect will be buying this magazine. They will properly be working class people that do not have the highest income.
  • 46. Distribution • The Sun is distributed in mainly the UK mainly though printed copies but also digital as well. The Sun website offers people to subscribe to the Sun this can also be done though the their application. They will be sold in all different stores around the UK such as WHSmith's, Sainsbury’s and corner stores. • The average circulation is 3,915,000 for the The Sun as they are wildly known. Also they will have over 2.5million users on there application which is where this biggest amount of customers will be drawn in.
  • 47. Advertised Products • The advertising in The Sun are designed so that they are suited to their readers. The demographics that the customers would be in are groups D and E. Most of the adverts will show how people can get discounts on products or save money in areas that are expensive. • This is important that users will read theses for the the sake of the magazine because most of the money the magazines is though advertisements so if readers do not like them then the magazine will not make as much profit as the company's will pull out.
  • 48. Complaint Procedure The Sun have an area on their website where they customers can go to complain about any of the content that they have read in their articles. Due to the editors code changing often they can get away with a lot of the complaints that are made against them, this is because as long as they are following the up to date editors code they do not have to respond to a lot of what people complain about. The editors code will not always cover everything so it is free for magazine company's to work around it. They are currently using the complaint procedure from IPSO. There is a link at the bottom of the page that will take customers to the IPSO page. If there are other issues for example with their website and not their articles there are other forms to fill out.
  • 49. Audience Theories • Katz: This is all about how they can draw in more readers with out having to make the content good. The idea is that if you put something in the magazine that the consumers ether has, can learn or has experience of. These are good things to have in your magazine as if the reader has any of these in the article then they will be likely to read it. If they put something that is different that people do not know much about in the magazine the readers will interested in what it is and will want to learn about it as long as the subject is interesting. • Hartley: this important when looking at the target audience as what he looked at was gender, class and age this is just what publishers will be looking into when creating there magazine. There reason for magazines looking into this so carefully when creating a magazine is because without these then the magazine would be all over the place, for example if you do not look at age when writing a magazine then you might put to complicated words in that will probably bore the reader that has an age between 18 and 26. The same goes for writing it for a younger audience that older people will want it to be more suited to them. This is why magazines will have there set age ranges when putting them together. With out Hartley people would not know weather or not the articles in the magazine are written to a standard that is suitable for them to read.
  • 50. • Maslow: Maslow suggests that people can be drawn to media types based on their need and the needs to satisfy their needs. Maslow put together a model together called a hierarchy of needs and was developed to show all the different circumstances that work for all different peoples needs. The Sun will use this to include content in their magazine. The content could be anything in the magazine as long as it can link and relate to a group of people. So if Suns content and link to these groups straight away people will end up reading and enjoying what they are reading. They will tend to make the articles more general and speculate about what is happing this way they can make sure that they can make the content more interesting as people always want to know more about what is going on and if they can make readers relate then they will believe and take in more of the content. Audience Theories Socio-economic Demographics: The socio-economic audience theory says that different people based on their jobs is split into different category’s. The groups are split up into based on how much money the individual is making. For example someone in the A group would be earning 50,000 a year and in upper class. They would be buying a magazine or newspaper for a bit more than someone in the groups of C1, C2 and D as the people in group E would not be buying these as they are privileges. Because these are the biggest groups the Sun aims to advertise to these groups as this is the way they can make the most money.
  • 51. Psychographics • Psychographics divides the market into groups based on their personality traits and class. This further deduces an assumption on different types of products and the brand that they might have. Picking out peoples classes, how they should live their daily lives and that their lifestyles choices decide an individual group that is targeted by media companies to improve the products attraction to people. • The Sun magazine would be placed in the category of Strugglers this is because the majority of the buyers are in the demographic of D-E jobs. Also because the price of the news paper is so low it means that they are able to afford the paper and they get their moneys worth as the other magazines like the daily mail will have more false information.
  • 52. Marketing • The Sun get involved advert was displayed in 2015. It showed people that The Sun is for all people no matter what job and they will always publish new that is real, and that people want to know about. However because they have a narrator walking around busy streets among other working class people this makes people seem the same as The Sun and looks more into not just D-E but also C2. • The Sun also set up an £9.50 annual holiday plan which over 45 million people have loved this will link to a wide group of people as for the smaller things they have a Sun Goals app which give people insight to all football news.
  • 53. Synergy • Synergy is when two or more companies come together to work on different projects and to work for a conmen interest that will benefit them both. The Sun uses different social to promote and advertise their product. The social media platforms allow then The Sun to be able to interact with the readers but also it allows them to reach out to a wide range of different types of groups of people this way they can have the widest fan base bringing in more money. • The Sun mainly uses social media platforms to work with is because the way that information is shared throughout the world for example all images can be shared by people on twitter and on Facebook mainly. For ample the twitter page has been liked by over 1.3 million people.
  • 54. The Sun news paper make sure to follow by all of these rules when working and for all the information that they put up or any images that they upload will by copywritten and they will have acquired it legally though all the proper procedures.
  • 55. LO1- conclusion • Throughout out doing this LO1 it has shown me all about the different types of magazine and what they do to make sure that the have the widest audience. I mainly looked into red top tabloids specifically The Sun. I now understand how this magazine uses audience theories to make sure that all their readers will enjoy the content and so that they will not be offended. Finally I looked out the layout of their magazines and website and what they do to make sure that people pick up the issue and do not look past it to buy a different magazines.
