Magazine Content NME magazine has changed a lot over the years. While so many of it's opposition over the year has folded, it has remained a dominant force in the music magazine industry. It began in the 50’s and has had to change a lot over the years because firstly the audiences change as over the years it has had to adapt from a pop magazine, to a rock mag in the 60’s, to punk in the 70’s, to glam rock, “madchester” and back to rock and indie. It changed to keep up with the changing audience to keep the readership up and attract the largest audience it can whilst maintaining its rock and roll attitude established by writers like Nick Kent and Tony Parsons. It has also changed due to technology as below you see how the magazine has developed with technology due to improvements in printing and paper etc.
Biggest Rival The main rival of NME magazine is Q magazine. It is Published by Bauer media group. Its circulation is 100,172 per month. (biggest selling in UK) Its readership profile is an “older audience who were being missed out” The publisher Bauer media is a private company The other magazine titles published by the company include… -Closer -Empire -mojo -FHM -Match!
Advertising/Sponsorship Examples of advertising, sponsorship and promotions in case study title include shockwaves sponsoring NME, the NME “shockwaves” tour and skins radio teaming up with NME. An example of synergy is the way that skins and NME has worked together in both skins radio and the magazine by advertising and using each others audiences to enhance each others audiences.
WEBSITE The NME website has improved a lot over the years as the web has developed and is now a highly interactive and successful website. Due to the website and radio etc the readership and audience has increased and improved The magazine has become more than just a magazine because the website has been improved so much and has been able to generate so much more content. It also has other things like radio and tv which has resulted in NME becoming more than a magazine and it is now a global brand. It uses advertising to fund the website and does this effectively by making advertising interactive helping them get a lot of sponsors and companies who want to advertise. the website of NME and Q, which is it’s main rival, are both good magazines but I would say NME is a much more interactive and deeper website as it provides links to blogs, facebook, twitter etc which expands the brand of NME all over the website therefore increasing its audience by putting itself on every aspect of the web unlike many of its competitors.
The future If I was the editor of the magazine I would do what NME keeps doing and keep changing with the times which has given it a major edge over its opponents that have fell over the years. They have realised the importance of things like synergy and media convergence which has resulted in them becoming a major brand. I would also concentrate on products like the I-pad and other new technology and exploit them fields before any other magazine could to try and get a deal of sponsorship, advertising or exclusivity from the products and in 5 years time it might be time to stop traditional magazine production and rely completely on technology.
