IDEOLOGY/ETHOS
Q magazine has a strap line which is stated on the top of the
magazine, this connotes that the author of the magazine is
trying to increase their target audience to increase the
popularity of how many people read their magazine.
Therefore this means that they want as big off audience as
possible to make as much money of the magazines as
possible. Alternatively the main image is a picture of the
famous Cheryl Cole who is a well known famous artist whom
has a lot of fans.
PURPOSE- STRAPLINE
The purpose of this magazine is to bring awareness
to the reader of how popular jay z is and then people
we read the magazine as they know it is starring jay
z, this conveys the target audience is people who are
interested to rapping. Therefore, it will inform and
educate(CAPS)* the reader on jay z’s new music
that is coming out.
For example the strap line “the 10 most exciting
people in music now” connotes that the target
audience is stereotypically teenagers from 13-20 get
attracted from the strap line as most teenagers listen
to the latest music coming out.

TECHNOLOGICAL CONVERGENCE
Q magazine has ‘Facebook’ which they will keep their target audience posted on new
up coming magazines. This is illustrated by q magazine having ‘120,883’Likes on their
Facebook page this is because everyone in society uses social media so therefore this
is where q magazine gets a lot of there fans from. Also on the Facebook page they
advertise new magazine that have been released recently which informs the audience
which magazines are coming out or have just come out, this conveys that that they may
have fans who regularly check up on the Facebook page to see if there has been any
magazines recently dropped. This Technological convergence could be seen as as
advantageous due to the fact as they may get more people purchasing each magazine
every time that they get published.

magazine/
TECHNICAL CONVERGENCE
CONTINUED
Bauer Media reach over 22 million UK adults every week with new magazines,
this is because they use convergence in order to gain people to gain interest in
new and upcoming magazines. Bauer media do use synergy in multiple ways to
connect to their fans. As you can see in the above picture, they also have twitter
which could connote that they love to keep their customers/audience updated with
new magazines that will be upcoming, which therefore means more people will be
waiting on new magazines to come out and then they will sell more overall. Bauer
Media’s twitter page has 11.7 thousand followers which could insinuate that it is
successful and they are still updating the page to today point so therefore it must
be working well.

Convergence: The convergence in Q magazine
could convey that they want people to visit their
website by adding a web address
Main image: the
main image in the
magazine is a medium
close shot this could
illustrate a star appeal
which could attract
people to view the
magazine.
Masthead: The Q
magazine logo only has
one letter which makes it
stand out more. Also it is
red which makes it stand
out more. The detonation
of the q mast head
connotes that the songs
that Ed Sheeren song are
mainly about love which
could anchor the the red
masthead and the red Ed
Sheeran writing.
Puff: The 50
albums of 2014 will
attract people to read
the magazine and see
who is in the top 50.
This is significant as it
symbolizes ways that
magazines attract
people to come and
read their magazine
over others.
FORM AND STYLE
The denotations of the Q magazine of ‘Adele’ is significant
as Q the magazine publisher always uses red and white in
all of their magazine articles which could convey that all of
there music is about love and romance, this could be
because the publisher wants the magazine to try and make
them look as professional as possible by using the same
colors which are also symbolic as well. The magazine
publisher uses star appeal to attract people to come and
read the magazine; this is because Adele is on the front
therefore people use Adele as a role model as she is a
famous pop artist who is loved by many people. The
magazine always has a barcode which also states the price
in small writing this could be because some people may not
see it until they eventually go to buy it and then they may
not care as much of how much the price rather than before
when first looking at the magazine. Lastly the reason why
all the conventions are similar on all magazines maybe
because it will make it easier for customers that read Q
magazines on a regular basis.

RETAIL OUTLET
RETAIL OUTLET(2)
Q magazine is a very popular magazine article company, which is

these shops are the biggest and most popular shops in the United

PRODUCTION
PROCESS
In this email I have wrote to the publisher of the magazine article
Bauer Media asking them about their production process of
publishing a magazine, but I am hoping on a reply with a answer to
give me more information to answer my question.
PRODUCTION
PROCESS CONTINUED
Page layout- Normally there is a specially team that focus on the
page layout for the magazine which they call themselves layout
staff. There job is to make sure that the page layout is perfect for
the whole magazine.
Proofreading- Now they will print out a hardcopy of the magazine
and check if everything in the magazine is correct, any mistakes
that are found get corrected on a DTP file instantly and then are
corrected.
File emailed to printer- The whole magazine is sent to the printer
and then printed of after proofreading the magazine.
Distribution- This is the last stage in the whole of the production
process of a magazine.
PRODUCTION
PROCESS
Date of publication- When the magazine is finished and when the publisher wants it to be
released to the general public. Then they will need to produce a schedule about the
production process and when each of the process will occur.
Managing the schedule-This is the most significant task there is in the production process of
a magazine. If the publisher wants there magazine to be published at the best standard
possible then. The schedule should be made in a way of an action of providing or supplying
something for someone to use, just in case a accident occurred during the process then they
can still meet the deadline.
Editorial and budgetary decision- the next step that occurs in the production process of a
magazine is the content/editorial decision. The editorial decisions is the topics that get
decided in the next issue of the magazine. They talk about various contents that will be
upcoming in the next magazine. After thinking about what articles or topics, stories on the
news and photographs that will be used in the magazine. Then they look at the budget they
have to spend on the overall production of the magazine process.
Content- Content needs to be decided inside the magazine and this is a very important step
because without content they wouldn’t of been able to publish the whole magazine in the first
place. Content is therefore is very significant. Not only content but photographs need to be
decided for the content which the graphics are designed with a computer program.
Sub-editing- Sub editing focuses on one major thing which the quality control on the
magazine as a whole. Quality control focus focus on checking the accuracy of facts in the
article, marking sure spelling, grammar and punctuation is accurate in the magazine and
making sure that articles follow the house style.
SYNERGY
Synergy is the simultaneous release of different products to boost both. Synergy can be
used most often by bigger companies which work together to promote linked products
across different media.
Q magazine use social media such as Facebook and Twitter to publish their magazine
company as much as possible they do this by sharing and re-tweeting their own brands.
Furthermore this allows them to advertise their company as much as possible. This is
illustrated by q magazine having ‘120,883’Likes on their Facebook page this is because
everyone in society uses social media so therefore this is where q magazine gets a lot of
there fans and customers from. Also on the Facebook page they advertise new magazine
that have been released recently which informs the audience which magazines are coming
out or have just come out, this conveys that that they may have fans who regularly check up
on the Facebook page to see if there has been any magazines recently dropped. This
could be seen as as advantageous due to the fact as they may get more people
purchasing each magazine every time that they get published.

DEMOGRAPHICS
Age Appeal: The age appeal of Q magazine will majority of people from 15-24 as you
can see it states that there are 35.5% of all of the readers who are from age 15-24, also
there is a high majority of people who are from the age of 24-35 which could connote that
the from the age of 15-35 they like the genres that are included in all Q magazine article.
Gender: The main gender of q magazine articles is men with a high percentage of 68.3% in
comparison to women who have only 31.7% which could symbolize that women don’t like
the genres found in all q magazine article, I think that this is important as more people
would like q magazine overall due to the fact that there isn’t just one genre found in every
article there is a whole different range. For the socio economic needs table, the readers are
from the groups ABC1 which the majority of q magazine readers are people with higher
management, bankers, lawyers which will be the upper class side of people. Also from
category B there are readers like teachers, people from the media industry, and lastly C1
which would be people like office supervisors, managers, nurses who are still upper class
people. Overall this conveys that most people who are q magazine readers are in the upper
class section in the socio economic needs table.
PRODUCT ANAYLIS-
PURPOSE
Q magazine provides the latest news on new magazine
articles that will be coming out this is so that they can reach
heir target audience in all aspects. Their slogan is the worlds
best music magazine so their aims for every month is to
produce the best magazine which will provide lots of
information in latest news on featured artist, and when there
new hits and albums will be dropping. Also if Q magazine are
stating that there magazine are the worlds best music
magazine then they will need to keep their expectations high
for the target audience.
AUDIENCE THEORIES
CONTINUED
Psychographics - the study and classification of people
according to their attitudes, aspirations, and other psychological
criteria, especially in market research. Psychographics is all about
stereotyping and what sort of people get put in to specific genre
category considering their personality, appearance, how they
dress and how they act ect. For example the consumers of Q
magazine is mainly men which can be seen by the Q reader
where it is stated that 68.3% of the consumers are all men and
the other 31.7% are women. Furthermore these men who are
consumers of Q magazine will be mainly people who enjoy rock
music, so therefore the majority of them could have long hair and
like wearing black colors which is because whilst listening to rock
it is a dark and chilling atmosphere which is why the color black is
insinuated.
USES AND GRATIFICATIONS
FROM A DPS.
In the Katz theory for uses and gratifications the magazine I am
doing magazine has lots of interviews and opinions of people so it
must be informing and educating the reader, however it does still
keep you updated on upcoming artist who will be featuring in the
next magazine articles. The quotation in the double page spread “
I’m bringing Ginger back” informs and educates the reader what
Ed Sheeran is trying to get at in this double page spread from the
q magazine issue.
AUDIENCE THEORY
HARTLEY
Age: my magazine will appeal to teenagers
because the genre of my magazine will attract them to
want and come and read and find out information of
people who will be featuring in the magazine.
Gender: my magazine will usually refer to majority of
teenagers but most of them being boys at this is the
specific gender who listens to the rap genre.
Class: my magazine appeals mainly to teenagers so
this will be seen as the younger class from the age of
15- to around 21‘star appeal’ (Richard Dyer).
Ethnicity/Nationality: my magazine usually refers to
people who live in the United Kingdom and only gets
released in the uk so therefore it is targeted a people
who work and live in the Uk
MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF
NEEDS
Maslow's theory mentions 4 different potential outcomes for
a reader after reading a magazine these are; social climbers,
care givers, explorers and survivors. Social climbers is
when the audience are driven by improving their status in
society. This is important because it gives the audience
confidence and a drive to do well in life. Caregivers is when
the audience sympathies with the characters situation. This
is important because it gives the audience a chance to
escape reality and be engrossed into a magazine. Firstly
there are social climbers which is where the audience are
driven by improving the status in the hierarchy of needs in
society, and caregivers is when the audience gin sympathy
for a characters situation. Furthermore, explorers is where
the audience are driven by social change in a magazine.
Also lastly, survivors is where the audience want character
to be safe as they have gained a bond with that specific
character. This is important because it gives the audience a
chance to escape reality and be engrossed into a magazine.
Survivors is when the audience members want security and
routine. This is important because they have security
knowing that the magazine will be published on a set date.
AUDIENCE THEORY HARTLEY
Age: Q magazine appeals to young adults from 18-30 year olds
because the genre is hip hop and stereotypically refers to young adults
who like the genre of hip hop.
Gender: Q magazines usually refer to majority of males as the
percentage of male to female is 78% and female is 22%
Class: Q magazine appeals mainly to a working class audience
because of the price of the magazine such as some of the ‘star appeal’
(Richard dyer).
Ethnicity/Nationality: British and American therefore the magazine is
mainly for white people.
AUDIENCE THEORIES
Uses and gratifications (Katz):This theory is about how people explore the media and in which
way they do it, When they do explore the media there must be reasons why. There are 4
different segments to th theory: Katz’ uses and gratifications. Firstly there is personal
identification which Is when the audience can relate to a character from an article. Also there
is personal relationship where this is when the audience feels for a specific character and
gains a close bond with them and wants the to succeed in what ever they are doing;
pernultimetly there is inform and educate where the audience learns something from a article
in this situation it is where they learn something from the text about the article or what they are
trying to achieve. And the last part of the uses and gratifications theory is diversion which this
is about the audience is able to escape from their reality in their mind and gain a place in the
text as if it is real and is happening in heir eyes.
According to Maslow the target readership would be survivors because they will like the
security and routine of knowing that the magazine will be produced monthly for their
entertainment. Social climbers is when the audience are driven by improving their status in
society. This is important because it gives the audience confidence and a drive to do well in
life. XXLs target audience will fit in to the social climbers because they will like to read about
the top music artists, this will therefore improve their status in society.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience of my magazine will be aged from around 16-
25(Hartley)this is due to teenagers and people in their early 20’s are big
fans of rap genre, this is significant because the more people that like rap
genre then the more people will be purchase my magazine article due to
the fact that they enjoy listening to rap music. Therefore I am aiming my
magazine article at people from 16-25. According to Katz uses and
gratifications the audience will be able to ‘personally identify themselves
with their ‘star appeal’(Richard Dyer). They will also be able to ‘personally
identify’ stories in the magazine from the artists where they talk about
their hobbies and interests. Furthermore the audience will be able to
divert from everyday situations such as work by reading the magazine
that will entertain (Katz) them. The magazine will inform and
educate(Katz) the reader of new music information and will keep the
reader updated.
MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is about how people get
motivated by something or someone when they are trying to
achieve a goal this is significant as it helps their progression.
Also there are four segments of the maslow’s hierarchy of
needs. Firstly there are social climbers which is where the
audience are driven by improving the status in the hierarchy
of needs in society, and caregivers is when the audience gin
sympathy for a characters situation. Pernutimetly, explorers
is where the audience are driven by social change in a
magazine. Also lastly, survivors is where the audience want
character to be safe as they have gained a bond with that
specific character.
PRIMARY RESEARCH
My First question on the survey
monkey was ‘ what is your gender?’
and the most popular answer for the
survey was male which was 80% out
of the 11 answer which is 9 people.
This is symbolic because in the
‘Q’Reader the main gender is male
with a huge percentage of 68.3%
which conveys that the majority of
people who read ‘Q’magazine will be
males.
PRIMARY RESEARCH
My second question on the
survey monkey for music
magazines will consists of
an age question, ‘How old
are you?’ which I got a very
varied answer from a
majority of answers from 6
people from the age of 15-
19, 1 person from 26-31,
and 4 people from 31 and
above. This is symbolic to
the ‘Q’ reader because the
majority of people from the
Q reader are 15-24 age with
a percentage of 35.5%
PRIMARY RESEARCH
In my survey monkey, the most popular
genre is rap and rock music which can
be seen as significant because the
main genre of q magazine will be seen
as Rock so this is similar which could
also convey that the main people who
read q magazine are mainly interested
in to rock music. This connotes that
most people like and enjoy reading
about rock music which is significant as
this is the main specialized genre for Q
magazine in general, also this is
important because if the audience
enjoy reading about rock music then
this means that Q will sell more
magazines as their audience enjoy
reading that specific genre the most.
PRIMARY RESEARCH
The answers I got for the
question ‘how much would you
pay for a music magazine’
comes with a different variety of
answers varying from a high
percentage of £0-£2 from £4-£5
this is significant because Q’s
price ranges from around £3-£5
which is significant as from my
survey the majority of people
who are buying the magazines
will be willing to pay for a Q
magazine which symbolizes why
Q magazine is the best
magazine company in the Uk.
As well as in their magazines, their website conveys that their
style is and has always been similar with the same house style
with simple layout. But they may have come out with new
things which is also insinuated in the picture above which
states ‘follow the stub hub Q awards 2016 right here’ which is
getting their audience to follow their social media links which
will keep the audience updated with their new magazines that
are coming up.
SECONDARY RESEARCH
SECONDARY
RESEARCH
For secondary research, if firstly looked into Q magazine YouTube
channel which currently has 4226 subscribers. Furthermore, this is
extended content as the YouTube channel consists of backstage
interviews who have published on ‘Q’ magazine magazines, this is
significant as it gives the audience more information on the
magazines that they have released, which also appeals to a wider
variety of audiences as some people like reading had copies and
some people like visiting something's online.
SECONDARY
RESEARCH
Also another part of secondary research that q magazine use on social
media will be twitter. Firstly ‘Q’ magazine have an extremely amount of
followers on their twitter page ‘130k’ which could connote that there
twitter page is essential to follow if you are interested in there
magazines. This is because they give there audience information on
new releases that will be coming out soon. This is a significant factor for
Q magazine selling more magazines as people will be waiting on new
releases on coming which will mean that they will make more profit on
selling more magazines meaning they will become more popular.
PRODUCT ADVERTISING&
MARKETING
Q magazine is advertised in many ways, majority of their advertisements will
be found on the social media this is because they post updates on a variety
of social media: for example: twitter, Facebook, YouTube. This is significant
as this will boost Q magazines popularity. Also 12 magazines are advertised
on the Bauer media website who is the main publisher of ‘Q’ as a whole.
Furthermore, the Q awards is also a form of advertisements as there is
thousands of people watching the Q awards as it is based on fan votes. So
this is significant as many people will be watching the awards who haven’t
subscribed to ‘Q’ magazine who will after the awards as they will realize all
the famous people who will be published on Q magazines which could
attract them to subscribe to them. Q magazine us below the line strategy
because they mainly use social media links such as YouTube, Facebook etc.,
which are all classed as below the line. They use below the line as this is a
easier method to attract the target audience of young people, this is because
young people mainly use social media accounts such as Facebook,
instagram, and YouTube so therefore this will catch their eye and maybe
make them want to subscribe to get their magazines.
Twitter YouTube
DISTRIBUTION
Q magazine is mainly sold in the UK but you can even subscribe to
have a print or a digital copy an this can be available around the
world, which is sold In 230 countries around world the magazine is
mainly sold in the uk but is buyable from any other country online.
Also ‘Q’ magazine is also sold in Asda and Tesco. However if you

DISTRIBUTION EXAMPLE-
RETAIL OUTLET
DISTRIBUTION EXAMPLE-
RETAIL OUTLET CONTINUED
Q magazine is very popular magazine article which is also
published by a very popular publisher who is called Bauer
media which is why they are in they are the uk’s best selling
magazine article. In the slide above it conveys Q magazines
popularity by the shops that ‘Q’ magazine is sold at for
example: Whsmith, Tesco, Sainsbury’s ect this is significant
because these are popular shops that are located round the
Uk and ‘Q’ is located in these stores. Also Q magazine is not
only sold in shops, supermarkets, ect but it is also sold
online which people can subscribe to the website to get ‘Q’
magazines delivered to their door step.
IMPACT AND EFFECT OF THE MAGAZINE TO
THE TARGET AUDIENCE
Q magazine have a huge impact on their audience, they do
this by using their social group which is a huge impact on
the audience which could also attract people who are in the
social group but haven't already subscribed to their
magazines and get it delivered straight to their doorstep
which will then overall increase Q magazines sales which
overall will benefit the company as they will get more money
and more profit. Q magazines stereotypical target audience
will be considered as male according to the ‘Q reader’ their
majority of their target audience are men with a percentage of
68.3% and women being 31.7 % and also the highest percent
age range will be considered to be 25- 34 as you can see
below.
RELEVANT ISSUES ON REPRESENTATION
Stereotyping- A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea
of a particular type of person or thing there is a variety of segments in
stereotyping there is race, gender, personality, culture and several
more. An example of someone saying something that is stereotypical
could be that ‘ all men are stronger than women and do all the work’
For Q magazine the typical age/ target audience will be male from the
age of 20-24 this is significant as this age group is the majority of
customers that Q magazine have so this Is essential that they directly
attract that specific age group to carry on publishing their magazine
Q Magazine will often reflect the current zeitgeist through the artists
that they use, whether they have a good trend which may also attract a
specific target audience into subscribing to their magazine
‘John Berger’ (1972) “men act, women appear” this is significant as
‘Cheryl Cole’ in the picture below could covey the women ideology as
women could appear to be trying to demonstrate the theory to the target
audience.
COPYRIGHT
Copyright is a legal means of protecting an author's work. It is a type of
intellectual property that provides publication, distribution, and usage rights for the
author. This means whatever content the author created cannot be used or
published by anyone else without the consent of the author. The length of
copyright protection may vary from country to country, but it usually lasts for the
life of the author plus 50 to 100 years.
The copy right law which changed in 1998, copyright gives certain legal protection
to authors of materials, this also allows an employee to have their own righs for
photocopying from a paper version then converted in to a book.

LEGAL ISSUES
https://www.theguardian.com/media/2010/apr/19/bauer-
freelance-contracts-row This link here describes how Bauer
media wants free-lances which is there employees and they
want them to take away their rights to be references in Bauer
Media, therefore they will need to sign a contract so they
don’t need to reference anyone which will mean this will take
away their rights. Because of this many righters and
photographers have written to Bauer Media stating that they
will not work for them unless they take away the new
contract and they will carry on worming their again this is
essential for Bauer Media as they will have lost around 200
workers if they didn’t remove the contract.
COMPLAINT
A complaint could come across in a magazine front cover, where a female
artist will be posted on a front cover with barely any clothes on, this does
not put a good message out there to young children who may come across
this magazine somehow, furthermore the parents of the young children will
also not be very happy which is maybe where the complaint will come from.
Even though some images like the one below isn’t revealing that much there
is still a flirtatious sensation that may come across to many people, but
some magazine front covers are obvious why they get complains on as the
image is revealing to much. John Berger’ (1972) “men act, women appear”
this is significant as ‘Cheryl Cole’ in the picture below could covey the
women ideology as women could appear to be trying to demonstrate the
theory to the target audience. This is significant because all the magazine
front covers below may be only bought by teenagers because of the front
cover which could symbolize that women are being used as objects to try
and sell more copies of magazines.
Q’S COMPLAINT PROCEDURE
If you subscribe to Q magazine via their website or from Great
Magazines and you are not happy with a specific magazine in
general then you can follow a complaint procedure vi their
website. The first step of the complaint procedure on the Q
magazine website will be to look at previous FAQ’s which is
frequently asked questions that will be from similar people like
you that want to complain about magazines that Q have
released, if you are satisfied with what they include then you
can move to the further stage which will be to contact a team
leader from Q magazine, or write to the subscriber services and
tell them what your problem is. Furthermore, if you still aren’t
satisfied with the steps then you can write to the head of the
customer retention which will be a specific worker who covers
on complaints at Q’s publisher which is Bauer Media, when the
email is sent to the person then wait for a reply which will be
with you as soon as possible after your complaint has been
sent.
ROYALTIES
A royalty is a payment made by one party, the licensee or
franchisee to another that owns a particular asset, the licensor or
franchisor for the right to ongoing use of that asset. The NLA
newspaper licensing company is where content from a specific
magazine has been copyrighted and if someone else in another
magazine uses this specific information then they will have to pay
the first publisher which is essential for them, as they created it.
Furthermore, the NLA make sure that each publisher gets their
royalties which in this case will be money. Q magazine royalty will
be Bauer Media which both will be subscribed to the NLA.
http://www.dictionary.com/browse/royalty
ETHICAL ISSUES
Ethical Issue is a essential part of producing a magazine
because if there are ethical issues that are found in a magazine
when it is published, complaints could be sent to the publisher
complaining about a specific ethical issue that may harm the
person reading the magazine. When a publisher like “Bauer
Media’ who produced ‘Q’s magazines, companies have to follow
rules to try and prevent any people who have previously
subscribed to ‘Q’ to be able to complain to the publisher of the
magazine. So therefore it is a essential procedure to go through
the magazine before it is published checking that the magazine
will not harm anyone in a any sort of way. One of the rules that
must be covered in the procedure of producing a magazine will
be’ particular care must be taken to avoid causing offence on
the grounds of race, religion, sexual orientation, age and lastly
gender. These are significant factors that must be followed to
make sure everyone in the target audience doesn’t get offended
whilst reading the magazine.
REGULATORY ISSUES
Data protection act is which this protects companies content
and any personal information and how it is used in the
business. Some of the data protection act principles are used
fairly accurately, and kept safe so that there health and safety
act needs to be aware to all staff, so all the workers can have
privacy in the industry. For example when the employees are
printing they need to be able to know how to use the
machinery and if someone was to have injury or a incident
they will need to know how to overcome. Also another
segment of the regulatory issues is the ip watermark, which is
content that usually has a copyright formula that can be
referred as intellectual property and this is protected by the
law and the government. IP can be divided into two different
categories one of them being industrial property and
copyright. So with IP, literally work and photographs can be
protected through IP.
ROLE OF RELEVANT
REGULATORY BODIES
When it comes to making magazines you must follow the editors
codes of practices, for example some of these are known as Accuracy
because if you aren’t accurate when creating a magazine because if
you aren’t you will be giving out false information to the audience
which you are not allowed to do therefore if you do give information
that is false, then you will have to apologies to the audience for doing
this. Also accuracy is important because you can’t give false pictures,
for example if you put up previous images of a different music festival
and say that this is what occurs at your festival you could get fined
and will have to remove all pictures that have been used inaccurately.
Furthermore, the image below of the Q magazines illustrates that they
use the accuracy in the editors code of practice to make sure that the
audience can’t pick out any misleading comments in the front cover.

BRAND IDEOLOGY/ETHOS Q magazine has a strap line which is stated on the top of the magazine, this connotes that the author of the magazine is trying to increase their target audience to increase the popularity of how many people read their magazine. Also on the Facebook page they advertise new magazine that have been released recently which informs the audience which magazines are coming out or have just come out, this conveys that that they may have fans who regularly check up on the Facebook page to see if there has been any magazines recently dropped. This Technological convergence could be seen as as advantageous due to the fact as they may get more people purchasing each magazine every time that they get published. https://www.facebook.com/Q magazine/
  • 12. • 16. DECONSTRUCT A FRONT COVER Strapline The stories of the year’ which is a superlative to make people want to buy and read the magazine to see what is hidden inside. Convergence: The convergence in Q magazine could convey that they want people to visit their website by adding a web address Main image: the main image in the magazine is a medium close shot this could illustrate a star appeal which could attract people to view the magazine. Masthead: The Q magazine logo only has one letter which makes it stand out more. Also it is red which makes it stand out more. The detonation of the q mast head connotes that the songs that Ed Sheeren song are mainly about love which could anchor the the red masthead and the red Ed Sheeran writing. Puff: The 50 albums of 2014 will attract people to read the magazine and see who is in the top 50. This is significant as it symbolizes ways that magazines attract people to come and read their magazine over others.
  • 17. FORM AND STYLE The denotations of the Q magazine of ‘Adele’ is significant as Q the magazine publisher always uses red and white in all of their magazine articles which could convey that all of there music is about love and romance, this could be because the publisher wants the magazine to try and make them look as professional as possible by using the same colors which are also symbolic as well. The magazine publisher uses star appeal to attract people to come and read the magazine; this is because Adele is on the front therefore people use Adele as a role model as she is a famous pop artist who is loved by many people. The magazine always has a barcode which also states the price in small writing this could be because some people may not see it until they eventually go to buy it and then they may not care as much of how much the price rather than before when first looking at the magazine. Lastly the reason why all the conventions are similar on all magazines maybe because it will make it easier for customers that read Q magazines on a regular basis.
  • 18. DECONSTRUCT A DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD The drop capital has been used to illustrate to the reader when to start reading The pull quote” I’m bringing Ginger back’ stands out to match the connotation The Q magazine logo on the bottom reminds the reader the id entity of the magazine whilst they read through the magazine The main image of Ed Sheeran standing in front of the famous landmark, this is symbolic as he has his hands in pockets like nothing is happening. The PUFF box is advertisement of Ed Sheeran new album, even though it is separate from the article it is still trying to promote his new music.

  • 21. PRODUCTION PROCESS In this email I have wrote to the publisher of the magazine article Bauer Media asking them about their production process of publishing a magazine, but I am hoping on a reply with a answer to give me more information to answer my question.
  • 22. PRODUCTION PROCESS CONTINUED Page layout- Normally there is a specially team that focus on the page layout for the magazine which they call themselves layout staff. There job is to make sure that the page layout is perfect for the whole magazine. Proofreading- Now they will print out a hardcopy of the magazine and check if everything in the magazine is correct, any mistakes that are found get corrected on a DTP file instantly and then are corrected. File emailed to printer- The whole magazine is sent to the printer and then printed of after proofreading the magazine. Distribution- This is the last stage in the whole of the production process of a magazine.
  • 23. PRODUCTION PROCESS Date of publication- When the magazine is finished and when the publisher wants it to be released to the general public. Then they will need to produce a schedule about the production process and when each of the process will occur. Managing the schedule-This is the most significant task there is in the production process of a magazine. If the publisher wants there magazine to be published at the best standard possible then. The schedule should be made in a way of an action of providing or supplying something for someone to use, just in case a accident occurred during the process then they can still meet the deadline. Editorial and budgetary decision- the next step that occurs in the production process of a magazine is the content/editorial decision. The editorial decisions is the topics that get decided in the next issue of the magazine. They talk about various contents that will be upcoming in the next magazine. After thinking about what articles or topics, stories on the news and photographs that will be used in the magazine. Then they look at the budget they have to spend on the overall production of the magazine process. Content- Content needs to be decided inside the magazine and this is a very important step because without content they wouldn’t of been able to publish the whole magazine in the first place. Content is therefore is very significant. Not only content but photographs need to be decided for the content which the graphics are designed with a computer program. Sub-editing- Sub editing focuses on one major thing which the quality control on the magazine as a whole. Quality control focus focus on checking the accuracy of facts in the article, marking sure spelling, grammar and punctuation is accurate in the magazine and making sure that articles follow the house style.
  • 24. SYNERGY Synergy is the simultaneous release of different products to boost both. Synergy can be used most often by bigger companies which work together to promote linked products across different media. Q magazine use social media such as Facebook and Twitter to publish their magazine company as much as possible they do this by sharing and re-tweeting their own brands. Furthermore this allows them to advertise their company as much as possible. This is illustrated by q magazine having ‘120,883’Likes on their Facebook page this is because everyone in society uses social media so therefore this is where q magazine gets a lot of there fans and customers from. Also on the Facebook page they advertise new magazine that have been released recently which informs the audience which magazines are coming out or have just come out, this conveys that that they may have fans who regularly check up on the Facebook page to see if there has been any magazines recently dropped. This could be seen as as advantageous due to the fact as they may get more people purchasing each magazine every time that they get published. http://www.slideshare.net/jphibbert1979/synergy-6807548

DEMOGRAPHICS Age Appeal: The age appeal of Q magazine will majority of people from 15-24 as you can see it states that there are 35.5% of all of the readers who are from age 15-24, also there is a high majority of people who are from the age of 24-35 which could connote that the from the age of 15-35 they like the genres that are included in all Q magazine article. Gender: The main gender of q magazine articles is men with a high percentage of 68.3% in comparison to women who have only 31.7% which could symbolize that women don’t like the genres found in all q magazine article, I think that this is important as more people would like q magazine overall due to the fact that there isn’t just one genre found in every article there is a whole different range. For the socio economic needs table, the readers are from the groups ABC1 which the majority of q magazine readers are people with higher management, bankers, lawyers which will be the upper class side of people. Also from category B there are readers like teachers, people from the media industry, and lastly C1 which would be people like office supervisors, managers, nurses who are still upper class people. Overall this conveys that most people who are q magazine readers are in the upper class section in the socio economic needs table.

  • 28. AUDIENCE THEORIES CONTINUED Psychographics - the study and classification of people according to their attitudes, aspirations, and other psychological criteria, especially in market research. Psychographics is all about stereotyping and what sort of people get put in to specific genre category considering their personality, appearance, how they dress and how they act ect. For example the consumers of Q magazine is mainly men which can be seen by the Q reader where it is stated that 68.3% of the consumers are all men and the other 31.7% are women. Furthermore these men who are consumers of Q magazine will be mainly people who enjoy rock music, so therefore the majority of them could have long hair and like wearing black colors which is because whilst listening to rock it is a dark and chilling atmosphere which is why the color black is insinuated.
  • 29. USES AND GRATIFICATIONS FROM A DPS. In the Katz theory for uses and gratifications the magazine I am doing magazine has lots of interviews and opinions of people so it must be informing and educating the reader, however it does still keep you updated on upcoming artist who will be featuring in the next magazine articles. The quotation in the double page spread “ I’m bringing Ginger back” informs and educates the reader what Ed Sheeran is trying to get at in this double page spread from the q magazine issue.

  • 31. MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS Maslow's theory mentions 4 different potential outcomes for a reader after reading a magazine these are; social climbers, care givers, explorers and survivors. Social climbers is when the audience are driven by improving their status in society. This is important because it gives the audience confidence and a drive to do well in life. Caregivers is when the audience sympathies with the characters situation. This is important because it gives the audience a chance to escape reality and be engrossed into a magazine. Firstly there are social climbers which is where the audience are driven by improving the status in the hierarchy of needs in society, and caregivers is when the audience gin sympathy for a characters situation. Furthermore, explorers is where the audience are driven by social change in a magazine. Also lastly, survivors is where the audience want character to be safe as they have gained a bond with that specific character. This is important because it gives the audience a chance to escape reality and be engrossed into a magazine. Survivors is when the audience members want security and routine. This is important because they have security knowing that the magazine will be published on a set date.
  • 32. AUDIENCE THEORY HARTLEY Age: Q magazine appeals to young adults from 18-30 year olds because the genre is hip hop and stereotypically refers to young adults who like the genre of hip hop. Gender: Q magazines usually refer to majority of males as the percentage of male to female is 78% and female is 22% Class: Q magazine appeals mainly to a working class audience because of the price of the magazine such as some of the ‘star appeal’ (Richard dyer). Ethnicity/Nationality: British and American therefore the magazine is mainly for white people.
  • 33. AUDIENCE THEORIES Uses and gratifications (Katz):This theory is about how people explore the media and in which way they do it, When they do explore the media there must be reasons why. There are 4 different segments to th theory: Katz’ uses and gratifications. Firstly there is personal identification which Is when the audience can relate to a character from an article. Also there is personal relationship where this is when the audience feels for a specific character and gains a close bond with them and wants the to succeed in what ever they are doing; pernultimetly there is inform and educate where the audience learns something from a article in this situation it is where they learn something from the text about the article or what they are trying to achieve. And the last part of the uses and gratifications theory is diversion which this is about the audience is able to escape from their reality in their mind and gain a place in the text as if it is real and is happening in heir eyes. According to Maslow the target readership would be survivors because they will like the security and routine of knowing that the magazine will be produced monthly for their entertainment. Social climbers is when the audience are driven by improving their status in society. This is important because it gives the audience confidence and a drive to do well in life. XXLs target audience will fit in to the social climbers because they will like to read about the top music artists, this will therefore improve their status in society.
  • 34. TARGET AUDIENCE The target audience of my magazine will be aged from around 16- 25(Hartley)this is due to teenagers and people in their early 20’s are big fans of rap genre, this is significant because the more people that like rap genre then the more people will be purchase my magazine article due to the fact that they enjoy listening to rap music. Therefore I am aiming my magazine article at people from 16-25. According to Katz uses and gratifications the audience will be able to ‘personally identify themselves with their ‘star appeal’(Richard Dyer). They will also be able to ‘personally identify’ stories in the magazine from the artists where they talk about their hobbies and interests. Furthermore the audience will be able to divert from everyday situations such as work by reading the magazine that will entertain (Katz) them. The magazine will inform and educate(Katz) the reader of new music information and will keep the reader updated.
  • 35. MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is about how people get motivated by something or someone when they are trying to achieve a goal this is significant as it helps their progression. Also there are four segments of the maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Firstly there are social climbers which is where the audience are driven by improving the status in the hierarchy of needs in society, and caregivers is when the audience gin sympathy for a characters situation. Pernutimetly, explorers is where the audience are driven by social change in a magazine. Also lastly, survivors is where the audience want character to be safe as they have gained a bond with that specific character.
  • 36. PRIMARY RESEARCH My First question on the survey monkey was ‘ what is your gender?’ and the most popular answer for the survey was male which was 80% out of the 11 answer which is 9 people. This is symbolic because in the ‘Q’Reader the main gender is male with a huge percentage of 68.3% which conveys that the majority of people who read ‘Q’magazine will be males.
  • 37. PRIMARY RESEARCH My second question on the survey monkey for music magazines will consists of an age question, ‘How old are you?’ which I got a very varied answer from a majority of answers from 6 people from the age of 15- 19, 1 person from 26-31, and 4 people from 31 and above. This is symbolic to the ‘Q’ reader because the majority of people from the Q reader are 15-24 age with a percentage of 35.5%
  • 38. PRIMARY RESEARCH In my survey monkey, the most popular genre is rap and rock music which can be seen as significant because the main genre of q magazine will be seen as Rock so this is similar which could also convey that the main people who read q magazine are mainly interested in to rock music. This connotes that most people like and enjoy reading about rock music which is significant as this is the main specialized genre for Q magazine in general, also this is important because if the audience enjoy reading about rock music then this means that Q will sell more magazines as their audience enjoy reading that specific genre the most.
  • 39. PRIMARY RESEARCH The answers I got for the question ‘how much would you pay for a music magazine’ comes with a different variety of answers varying from a high percentage of £0-£2 from £4-£5 this is significant because Q’s price ranges from around £3-£5 which is significant as from my survey the majority of people who are buying the magazines will be willing to pay for a Q magazine which symbolizes why Q magazine is the best magazine company in the Uk.
  • 40. As well as in their magazines, their website conveys that their style is and has always been similar with the same house style with simple layout. But they may have come out with new things which is also insinuated in the picture above which states ‘follow the stub hub Q awards 2016 right here’ which is getting their audience to follow their social media links which will keep the audience updated with their new magazines that are coming up. SECONDARY RESEARCH
  • 41. SECONDARY RESEARCH For secondary research, if firstly looked into Q magazine YouTube channel which currently has 4226 subscribers. Furthermore, this is extended content as the YouTube channel consists of backstage interviews who have published on ‘Q’ magazine magazines, this is significant as it gives the audience more information on the magazines that they have released, which also appeals to a wider variety of audiences as some people like reading had copies and some people like visiting something's online.
  • 42. SECONDARY RESEARCH Also another part of secondary research that q magazine use on social media will be twitter. Firstly ‘Q’ magazine have an extremely amount of followers on their twitter page ‘130k’ which could connote that there twitter page is essential to follow if you are interested in there magazines. This is because they give there audience information on new releases that will be coming out soon. This is a significant factor for Q magazine selling more magazines as people will be waiting on new releases on coming which will mean that they will make more profit on selling more magazines meaning they will become more popular.
  • 43.
  • 44. PRODUCT ADVERTISING& MARKETING Q magazine is advertised in many ways, majority of their advertisements will be found on the social media this is because they post updates on a variety of social media: for example: twitter, Facebook, YouTube. This is significant as this will boost Q magazines popularity. Also 12 magazines are advertised on the Bauer media website who is the main publisher of ‘Q’ as a whole. Furthermore, the Q awards is also a form of advertisements as there is thousands of people watching the Q awards as it is based on fan votes. So this is significant as many people will be watching the awards who haven’t subscribed to ‘Q’ magazine who will after the awards as they will realize all the famous people who will be published on Q magazines which could attract them to subscribe to them. Q magazine us below the line strategy because they mainly use social media links such as YouTube, Facebook etc., which are all classed as below the line. They use below the line as this is a easier method to attract the target audience of young people, this is because young people mainly use social media accounts such as Facebook, instagram, and YouTube so therefore this will catch their eye and maybe make them want to subscribe to get their magazines. Twitter YouTube

  • 48.
  • 49. IMPACT AND EFFECT OF THE MAGAZINE TO THE TARGET AUDIENCE Q magazine have a huge impact on their audience, they do this by using their social group which is a huge impact on the audience which could also attract people who are in the social group but haven't already subscribed to their magazines and get it delivered straight to their doorstep which will then overall increase Q magazines sales which overall will benefit the company as they will get more money and more profit. Q magazines stereotypical target audience will be considered as male according to the ‘Q reader’ their majority of their target audience are men with a percentage of 68.3% and women being 31.7 % and also the highest percent age range will be considered to be 25- 34 as you can see below.
  • 50. RELEVANT ISSUES ON REPRESENTATION Stereotyping- A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing there is a variety of segments in stereotyping there is race, gender, personality, culture and several more. An example of someone saying something that is stereotypical could be that ‘ all men are stronger than women and do all the work’ For Q magazine the typical age/ target audience will be male from the age of 20-24 this is significant as this age group is the majority of customers that Q magazine have so this Is essential that they directly attract that specific age group to carry on publishing their magazine Q Magazine will often reflect the current zeitgeist through the artists that they use, whether they have a good trend which may also attract a specific target audience into subscribing to their magazine ‘John Berger’ (1972) “men act, women appear” this is significant as ‘Cheryl Cole’ in the picture below could covey the women ideology as women could appear to be trying to demonstrate the theory to the target audience.
  • 51. COPYRIGHT Copyright is a legal means of protecting an author's work. It is a type of intellectual property that provides publication, distribution, and usage rights for the author. This means whatever content the author created cannot be used or published by anyone else without the consent of the author. The length of copyright protection may vary from country to country, but it usually lasts for the life of the author plus 50 to 100 years. The copy right law which changed in 1998, copyright gives certain legal protection to authors of materials, this also allows an employee to have their own righs for photocopying from a paper version then converted in to a book. http://www.slideshare.net/mrmwood/copyri ght-designs-and-patents-act
  • 52. LEGAL ISSUES https://www.theguardian.com/media/2010/apr/19/bauer- freelance-contracts-row This link here describes how Bauer media wants free-lances which is there employees and they want them to take away their rights to be references in Bauer Media, therefore they will need to sign a contract so they don’t need to reference anyone which will mean this will take away their rights. Because of this many righters and photographers have written to Bauer Media stating that they will not work for them unless they take away the new contract and they will carry on worming their again this is essential for Bauer Media as they will have lost around 200 workers if they didn’t remove the contract.
  • 53. COMPLAINT A complaint could come across in a magazine front cover, where a female artist will be posted on a front cover with barely any clothes on, this does not put a good message out there to young children who may come across this magazine somehow, furthermore the parents of the young children will also not be very happy which is maybe where the complaint will come from. Even though some images like the one below isn’t revealing that much there is still a flirtatious sensation that may come across to many people, but some magazine front covers are obvious why they get complains on as the image is revealing to much. John Berger’ (1972) “men act, women appear” this is significant as ‘Cheryl Cole’ in the picture below could covey the women ideology as women could appear to be trying to demonstrate the theory to the target audience. This is significant because all the magazine front covers below may be only bought by teenagers because of the front cover which could symbolize that women are being used as objects to try and sell more copies of magazines.
  • 54. Q’S COMPLAINT PROCEDURE If you subscribe to Q magazine via their website or from Great Magazines and you are not happy with a specific magazine in general then you can follow a complaint procedure vi their website. The first step of the complaint procedure on the Q magazine website will be to look at previous FAQ’s which is frequently asked questions that will be from similar people like you that want to complain about magazines that Q have released, if you are satisfied with what they include then you can move to the further stage which will be to contact a team leader from Q magazine, or write to the subscriber services and tell them what your problem is. Furthermore, if you still aren’t satisfied with the steps then you can write to the head of the customer retention which will be a specific worker who covers on complaints at Q’s publisher which is Bauer Media, when the email is sent to the person then wait for a reply which will be with you as soon as possible after your complaint has been sent.
  • 55. ROYALTIES A royalty is a payment made by one party, the licensee or franchisee to another that owns a particular asset, the licensor or franchisor for the right to ongoing use of that asset. The NLA newspaper licensing company is where content from a specific magazine has been copyrighted and if someone else in another magazine uses this specific information then they will have to pay the first publisher which is essential for them, as they created it. Furthermore, the NLA make sure that each publisher gets their royalties which in this case will be money. Q magazine royalty will be Bauer Media which both will be subscribed to the NLA. http://www.dictionary.com/browse/royalty
  • 56. ETHICAL ISSUES Ethical Issue is a essential part of producing a magazine because if there are ethical issues that are found in a magazine when it is published, complaints could be sent to the publisher complaining about a specific ethical issue that may harm the person reading the magazine. When a publisher like “Bauer Media’ who produced ‘Q’s magazines, companies have to follow rules to try and prevent any people who have previously subscribed to ‘Q’ to be able to complain to the publisher of the magazine. So therefore it is a essential procedure to go through the magazine before it is published checking that the magazine will not harm anyone in a any sort of way. One of the rules that must be covered in the procedure of producing a magazine will be’ particular care must be taken to avoid causing offence on the grounds of race, religion, sexual orientation, age and lastly gender. These are significant factors that must be followed to make sure everyone in the target audience doesn’t get offended whilst reading the magazine.
  • 57. REGULATORY ISSUES Data protection act is which this protects companies content and any personal information and how it is used in the business. Some of the data protection act principles are used fairly accurately, and kept safe so that there health and safety act needs to be aware to all staff, so all the workers can have privacy in the industry. For example when the employees are printing they need to be able to know how to use the machinery and if someone was to have injury or a incident they will need to know how to overcome. Also another segment of the regulatory issues is the ip watermark, which is content that usually has a copyright formula that can be referred as intellectual property and this is protected by the law and the government. IP can be divided into two different categories one of them being industrial property and copyright. So with IP, literally work and photographs can be protected through IP.
  • 58. ROLE OF RELEVANT REGULATORY BODIES When it comes to making magazines you must follow the editors codes of practices, for example some of these are known as Accuracy because if you aren’t accurate when creating a magazine because if you aren’t you will be giving out false information to the audience which you are not allowed to do therefore if you do give information that is false, then you will have to apologies to the audience for doing this. Also accuracy is important because you can’t give false pictures, for example if you put up previous images of a different music festival and say that this is what occurs at your festival you could get fined and will have to remove all pictures that have been used inaccurately. Furthermore, the image below of the Q magazines illustrates that they use the accuracy in the editors code of practice to make sure that the audience can’t pick out any misleading comments in the front cover.
