THE FINAL CUT
Horror edition
Audience:
My target audience is for cinema goers of both genders as I think films should be for all people to
watch and enjoy. The magazine would be aimed at over eighteens and lots of horror movies I
would review would be for 18 movies so it wouldn’t appeal to a younger audience as there would
be less content that would be entertaining for them. The audience would mainly be middle and
working class as this classification go to the cinema the most. It would appeal to this audience as
this social class are the biggest film goers so it would appeal to those who are interested in
watching new horror movies or unknown releases. In psychographic terms the audience for the
magazine fits the belonger and socially conscious category as the audience would want to learn
more about the horror genre and recent releases.
Rationale (approx. 100 words)
I’ve had practice in Photoshop rotoscoping images of people to make them seem like a cartoon
which I could use in the magazine to edit images to look unique. I’ve also done work on
Photoshop learning how to do effects such as double exposure which overlays one image onto
another in a different colour. I could use this on two images from different horror films to show that
I’m making a comparison between the two films. The advergame I made for irn bru used animation
and pixel art skills to create a game like design, although I can’t have an animation in my
magazine I could try using pixel art to make portrait of a character or a scene from a horror movie
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
The main concept for my magazine is to create a film magazine that focuses on the horror genre
while having a large audience appeal. I think that there is a large audience of cinema goers that
are looking for a reliable source that can give them information about recent releases of horror
films and unknown yet great films they could’ve missed out on. In my magazine, I aim to talk about
recently released horror movies I think the reader should watch and relatively unknown films that
do or don’t deserve attention, I aim to show this through reviews of certain films and a double page
spread that compares a recent horror film with a classic horror film.
The research that I need to conduct to help me make my magazine is mainly based around what
I’ll have to write. I need to research how film critics review the films and how audience review films
and then write my own opinion in a professional non-biased way that includes a basic summary of
the plot. I’ll need to research into comparing films as well by watching the two movies one after the
other and seeing how other compare films and how I need to adapt to it. I also have to re watch
the horror films I’m reviewing so I can give an accurate opinion on the films.
Evaluation (approx. 50 words)
I need to evaluate my work by splitting it into sections. Design, writing, images and audience
appeal. For each part of my evaluation I need to say what I liked and what I could’ve improved,
what I found difficult and also give an overall view of how I did. I could use screenshots and label
areas I succeeded or struggled with.
