1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR
MAIN PRODUCT AND
ANCILLARY TEXTS?
2. Poster
• The poster I created was designed as a marketing tool to encourage people to see my film and be
intrigued by it.
• The poster promotes the film through its boldness- catching peoples eye… giving enough
information (but not too much) to bring in the audience.
• My film poster focuses more on the thriller side to our film rather than the comedic side, I have done
this through a close up of the main characters face looking at one another.
• Follows the darks aspects of thrillers, I have used minimal colours, only black and red to make it
seem sinister.
• My film poster is targeted at people who enjoy thrillers- generally young adults.
• One downfall to my poster is that it has nothing related to arms on it therefore it may not be clear to
audience what are film is about .
• The main image on my poster is the main character, this is a common convention of a film poster so
that the audience because familiar with the character before seeing the film- like someone to look
out for.
3. Review
• The review I have written would best fit the little white lies magazine as it is has a very niche
audience, rather than a popular magazine such as Empire which regular film watchers would
buy rather than film fanatics who are more likely to buy LWL.
• My film was promoted in London short film festival through my review, giving well known film
makers an insight into what my film is about and the good/ bad aspects of it.
• My film review focuses on the good and bad aspects of my film such as acting,
cinematography, directors etc.
• In my review I have written about both strengths and weaknesses in my film however I have
focused more on strengths of my film to try and sell my film.
4. What is the purpose of a review?
Who reads them?
• Film fanatics
What information will it give them?
• Whether it’s a good film or not
• Rating out of five
• Directors and producers
• Release date
• Actors
• Brief context

5. Why is LWL best suited for my film
review?
• Little white lies is an independent magazine that was created in 2005
by a few ‘mates’ who enjoyed film but were bored with the basic
review writing.
• My short is best suited to this magazine as it is has a niche audience.
• LWL tends to avoid reviewing all the blockbuster films therefore my
film is perfectly suited to what goes in the magazine- more unknown
films (new filmmakers).
6. How does my short film link with my
Poster and film review?
• One way our film links well with the poster is the mysterious side to it, the way I have
placed the two images in my poster is as if she's looking over at herself in a strange
way.
• My review is a good way to promote my film and help the readers get a sense for what
the film is about giving them understanding into the strengths and weaknesses.
• Another way my poster is effective is through the different colours I have chosen for
each side of Mimi’s face one side being black and white representing the thriller aspect
of our film and the other being bright with make up on to represent the lighter side to
our film.
• In hindsight I would have tried to make stronger links with my poster and the short,
because I believe in doing this is could promote the film better.
7. Summary
These two ancillary texts (the review and film poster) work
together well to promote the film. They share the same
concept in that they are all trying to sell the film. The three
aspects, short film, the review and merge the film together
exploring both aspects of my film the thriller and comedic
side.
