3. What is Representation?
• Representation is the way in which something is shonw to the audience. This
is not, however, to be confused with stereotypes. Stereotypes are the way in
which a slect group of people are seen as by the rest of the world due to thier
representation in media.
“Media representations are the ways in which the media portrays particular
groups, communities, experiences, ideas, or topics from a particular ideological
or value perspective.”
• Representation theories allow the audience to see the product (film,
magazine, website) in a certian way through things like the language used,
the models used or the colour scheme. It can all change or form a reader's
ideas about the product.
4. Richard Dyer
• Richard Dyer had a few questions that he asked when looking into
representation in general. These questions were:
1. What sense is it making of the world?
2. What does it imply? Is it typical of the world or deviant?
3. Who is it speaking to? For whom? To whom?
4. What does it represent to us and why? How do we respond to
the representation?
• Through my magzine making I will keep this theory and use it
throughout so that I can answer these questions with my own
product, and in doing so, make the representation a lot clearer.
5. • Stereotypes are a big issue in the industries, not only for magazines, but more for film.
Stereotypes of groups of people are seen more often and they can sometimes be very
offensive.
“...a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or
thing.”
(from the dictionary)
• This means that for my magazine, I will have to think hard about the images I use in my
magazine to get across the correct messages and the right moods and the correct
attraction from the correct people. I don't want to think too much about people in
stereotypes and I don't want to over exaggerate them either. It can be very offensive to
many people. I will keep stereotyping for things like age groups. I think having he
stereotype of the age groups is less offensive, but I will take caution. Not all of them are. I
think age is an important one to have the stereotype for the magazine indusstry because
they need to think about the correst advertisements and the right models adn role models
to use rather than putting a stair lift advertisement in a children's magazine. It wouldn't be
appropriate. It is key that they will follow the correct stereotypes and think more about
what they would like as a person. So if it is a teenager's magazine, they would likel things
like make-up, or videogames (taking gender into account as well). They may also
appreciate things like school equipment prizes and quizzes and maybe school tips.
7. What is Genre?
• Genre is the catagory that the product falls under. For film, it is things like
Thriller, Horror, Action, Romantic etc. For magazine it's likely to be things like
Music, Fashion, Lifestyle etc. It is the way that the audience and the makers
of the movie or the magazine can be on the same page abou what they like
and how they want their product to be. It means that it is easily distinguished
as well. It divides an audience and so this makes them have certian feelings
that they can realte to their fellow audience members for this particular genre.
• In my magazine I will be integrating the conventions of my genre (fashion and
lifestyle) into my product, not only in the magazine, but in the billboards and
the website as well. It is important that I keep the website and the maazine
and the billboard as similar as possible and as well kept to the conventions
as well.
9. What is Narrative?
• Narrative is the media term for story telling. Todorov's Narrative
Theory, in summary, is that there are three steps of the narrative
story. These are the equilibrium, then something happens to
disrupt the equilibrium, and then the attmpt made to repair the
equilibrium, and finally, the new equilibrium. This kind of
created the idea of the narrative being a huge part of the film
industry. This less applies to the magazine industry because there
is less of a story line. This could be unless there is any kind of real
life story going on that they are keeping their reader's updated on,
however, this is more likely for maybe gossip magazines or teen
magazines that involve readers in gossip, less likely to be fashion
and lifestyle magazines.
10. How I will apply it...
• Like I've said, this doesn't really effect me or my
magazine because the story line mainly applies to the film
industry. It means that I am in a harder position because
this is kind of a template for a film or a film trailer, but I
have to kind of do it from scratch. It is something that I do
find easier and a lot more interesting to do. I will have
some kind of strategy of how to order my magazine and
how I will organise it, which will kind of act as my own
home made template for the pages I am doing.
12. What is an Auteur Theory?
• Auteur theory is the theory of filmmaking in which the director is viewed as
the major creative force in a motion picture. Once again, this relates less to
the magazine industry, however, it could apply to the fact that the editor is like
the director of the magazine industry. I think that the editor is the most
important person in the magazine industry. They say the “OK go” for the final
pages and they should be credited the most for all the different parts of the
whole magazine.
• I will be the editor for the whole magazine pages because I am working on
my own. If I was working in a group, I think this will be a lot different and I will
re-think who in the group will do what. However, I am on my own so I will be
in charge of the whole thing. This means I an ultimately the auteur of the
whole magazine pages. So this does apply to me, however this theory
doesn't effect much about my magazine.
