Evaluation q1 presentation
1. Evaluation Question one
• Q1: In what ways does you media product
use, challenge, or challenge forms and
conventions of real media text.
How does your research link with your final product?
• The research conducted for the short horror film allowed for me
to gain a understanding of conventional features in which I
wanted to challenge in the media industry in addition to
conforming to certain conventions. As the convention I wanted
to challenge was the idea of good always winning, I challenged
this by placing innocent school children at the centre of the film
who we see get murdered this is a new convention as usually in
horror films the audience don’t get to see the side of children
being murdered its always the idea of them being in danger but
there life not ending just being close to ending. I challenged this
convention as in the film we see two children get murdered and
the third child's scene is left on a cliff-hanger as to if she was
murdered in addition her school peers allowing for mystery to
develop.
2. How does your research link with your final product?
• The research in which I conducted for my poster allowed for me to
gain a stronger understanding to the requirements in which I will
need to implement to allow my poster to seem realistic. The
research taught me that the poster needs to be in line with the
genre of the film as the poster has a huge impact for the audience
deciding whether to watch the film or not. From conducting my
research it taught me poster conventions mainly being the factor
that the poster links with the genre of the film greatly. The research
links with my final product as I realised that the colour scheme
must intertwine with the review and short horror film, hence the
decision to stick with the colours of red and black throughout all
final products. Furthermore analysing posters as my research
taught me to take into consideration small aspects on the page as
to include the release date of the film for example and page
numbers on the review.
How does your research link with your final product?
• The research conducted for the review I felt was highly effective and
without analysing reviews I feel I would’ve been confused in terms
of creative decision making. The research allowed me to understand
the layout and language required in reviews to engage the
audiences. Analysing the structure allowed me to decide on the
structure of columns I wanted to create for my own review.
Analysing other reviews allowed for me to decide on aspects of
conventional features I wanted to challenge in addition to the
conventional features in which I wanted to implement into my own
work. The conventional feature in which I wanted to challenge was
the layout as I felt all reviews have a very similar structure. Therefore
I wanted to challenge this and decided to change the layout of my
review to try and appeal to a new and possibly wider audience due
to this decision made.
3. Conventions that you spotted whilst researching and which of those you decided to use in
your products?
Connections spotted and implemented?
• The idea that fascinated me in my research was when analysing
short horror films. As I found only very few short horror films
ended the film on a cliff-hanger as the stereotypical expectation of
a horror film usually consist of the idea of good winning and
everything ending on a positive note. This was the reason for why
when I watched “doll face” I realised I wanted to adapt this similar
idea in my own short horror film as it would allow my film to have a
unique element as being part of a limited amount of short horror
films n which end on a cliff hanger allowing for mystery and
assumptions of the audience to grow.
Connections spotted and implemented?
• When analysing this review it gave me the idea to use a similar
colour scheme. I began to consider which colours would be
associated with the horror genre and would be suitable for a horror
poster and review. This is when I decided to choose the colures
black and red as used in this review I analysed. As these colours
glorify the symbolic interpretation being blood, sinister and
demonic. These where all of which characteristics in which I wanted
my review to involve. Therefore I realised this idea would be
suitable for my own work and adapted it and used it as a template
in the preparation of my own final design.
4. Consider font styles, colours, layout and language for
poster and review?
• From my “As media coursework” it was considerably important to maintain consistency between work, that is why I decided
to maintain a font which worked for both the review and the poster to show the audience the level of consistency in which
has been maintained. Through the various different drafts I attempted to challenge conventions and use different style of
text, however the feedback I received from my target market is that my way of challenging conventions wasn’t functioning
well and would be beneficial to stick with conventions on this matter. In terms of colour usage I attempted to maintain the
colour scheme of black, red and white for the soul purpose being that these colours flow well alongside each other in
addition to these colours having the symbolic meaning behind them in which I required as blood and demons.
5. • The layout of the review was forming to conventions whilst attempting to challenge, by having a layout different to any
other review which could be found in other magazines, rather the layout flows in columns with a divide between the last
two paragraphs being separated by the word “verdict” I felt this was better suited whilst challenging and maintaining
conventions throughout. When writing the content for the review I had to take into consideration conventions in addition
to who my target market is and what they would expect in terms of the language used. The language for the review has
been left quite formal for the soul purpose that I want readers to get the feeling that this is a serious and honest review
of a film from a critical viewer of media content. When reviewing my analysis to understand the language used in my
research it was clear too me it was written in a formal and serious manner also. Therefore I decided to maintain this
language convention.
