REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 1
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 1
My targetaudienceis teenagersand young adults aged 16-21as in my researchfor
last years FMP I discoveredthat thiswas the ideal audiencefor a horrorfilm and I
think thatit’ll be good to stick to this as it gave me a lot of freedomlastyear so
havinga similar audienceclassificationshouldn'tbe an issue.I think thatmy project
could be focusedmore on appealingto both a male and female audiencethis time
as the film has a male and female protagonistwho come from different
backgroundsso it shouldappeal evenly to bothaudiences.I think thatoverall my
audiencewon’t be to differentfrom lastyears FMP but I’veimproved it so that the
genderof my audienceis more balanced.
The projectis importantto me as it’s a conceptthatI’ve been trying to developfor
the pastyear so I knowwhat I’m wanting to createwhen planning and developing
my project. As I’vemainly been researchingthis week I’ve lookedat thehorror
films/mediainspiredmy project and explainedhow it’s impactedmy conceptand
where it fit’s in to my concept, doing this has allowed me to get a better
understandingof my work and givenme a bettergraspon the cinematographyof
the films I’ve lookedat and how I could incorporatethis into my project.I want to
createa scenethattakes placeall in one trackingshotand this requires a lot of
researchan planningso lookingat othermedia has helped me discoverwhat I want
my projectto functionas well as why it’s so importantto me as it’ll prove my
capabilitieswith the horrorgenre.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 1
I think that the main difficultiesI could run into in this project are that my
planningcould proveuselesswhen I’m actually filmingmy projectand
becauseI want to film one long takemy planningis fundamentalto my
success so I need to put a lot of effortinto planningout exactly how the scene
will work. I think that an issue I may find in my primary research(which I will be
doing in week 2) is the survey as I need to make sure that I can find a placeto
shareit so that I can get a lot of replies as well as making sure my questions
are necessary and important.I think that as long as I can for the eventualityof
main problems I may face I can make it throughthe FMP without much issue.
Otherthan horrorfilms my key influencesare from the play Romeo and Juliet
as the plot of the play is a major influenceon my film conceptas I would give
my film the subgenreof a romance/tragedy mainly due to how I envisionmy
film ending however I’m not sure this influencewill be felt in the sceneI’m
making as the scene is more actionfocused.I’m yet to speak about music's
influencein my researchhowever I want to explainhow I want the soundtrack
to my film to work as well as the music that’sinspiredthis decision.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 1
In my previous projects I’ve learnt to become better at organizing
which should be really helpful for planning this project and
making sure all my actors show up or that I have back up actors
incase things go wrong. In last years FMP I worked with
coloured lights which I want to use in this project as well as it
adds a nice aesthetic as well as being something I have
experience with.
I think that I need to build my confidence work with actors as the
scene I’m filming will require some pretty emotive acting so I
want to develop my directing skills so I can get the best possible
performances from my actors. I also want to develop my skills
with making music as in my last project I wanted to make music
and it took up a lot of production time so this time I want to make
music again but I want to research and plan in advance so that I
can produce it more efficiently.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 1
I think that so far I’ve done agoodjob explainingmy influences as well as the
techniques that I want to incorporate into the scene. I’ve alsoresearched into
horror/film theoryto get a betterunderstanding of what make agood movie andhow I
canimprovemy style of horror whichI believehas beensuccessful so far. I think that
my main issuewhen researchinghas beenthat I’ve foundit difficult to keep upa good
pacewhile writing so I’ve found myself falling behinda bit however thisshouldn't be to
much of an issueas I can catch upoutsideof collegeand I’m gettingfaster at writing
now. In week two I want to finishmy research entirelyby completingmy secondary
and primaryresearchincludinginterviews and a survey. I alsowant to start my
planning asI think that this will be oneof the most important parts of my FMP.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL:
You are required to keep a weekly
reflective journal. The aim of the
reflective journal is for you to discuss
the challenges, obstacles and
difficulties you are managing and
solving during your FMP project.
This can be in one of the following
formats:
 Written journal (min. 300 words)
 Video journal (min. 3 mins)
 Audio journal (min. 3 mins)
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 2
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK

This week I’ve added my target audience to my research
PowerPoint so that I can show who my project is being made for, I
made a survey so that I can get some feedback on how I can
improve my initial concept. I looked into different aspects of film
making and how I would incorporate them into my project such as
the music, lighting and writing, I found this useful as it helped me to
imagine how the finished product should look and sound like. In my
audience research I looked at the reviews for films that had
influenced me and pointed out the faults in these films and how I
can improve upon these issues in my project.
I think that the most important thing I did this week was to look into
important directing skills such as writing screenplays and directing
actors as I can tell that these are really going to help me during
production with the organisation of filming. Directing actors will
probably help me the most as it will make filming more efficient as
well as improving the performances that I get.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 2
next week I will need to do some research into filming techniques such
as long takes as this will be the key aspect to my filming, I also need to
send my survey out so that I can analyse the feedback I get and
explain how it will help me in my project. I want to look at some horror
film trailers and explain how they will influence the trailer that I want to
make for my film.
I’d say the hardest part of this week was explaining how music and
lighting has influenced me, I watched scenes from Suspiria and Carrie
and Listened to lot’s of different songs which had the tone that I’d be
aiming for in my scene, I think that writing about these subjects was
difficult for me because it’s hard to describe what makes these
elements so impactful for me. I went through these slides a couple of
times because I wanted to talk about the technical elements of these
subjects rather than how the music/lighting made me feel as I think that
looking at the technical aspects is more important for research
purposes.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 2
I think that the most important part of my research this week
was my primary research into directing non-actors/actors as I
think that this has taught me some really useful skill that I can
use on set. I watched D4Darious for this and I think that his
videos are really great as he gets to the point quickly and it’s
clear that he has a lot of experience with film making.
Something else that will be really useful is the research I did
into screen plays as it’s given me a new way to help my self
and the actors.
I think that my next week of research I’ll probably run into
issues with my survey, I think that I’ll probably get some
responses that aren’t really what I’m hoping however most of
the questions aren’t really there to effect my video but to find
out more about who would watch my film and how I could make
it more appealing to them.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 3
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 3
The first thing I did this week was finishing my audience research as
I wanted to learn more about how my audience felt about the current
state of horror films and the results of this survey surprised me as
they reinforced that my concept and plans would appeal to most
audience members which was something I wasn’t actually expecting.
The research survey also told me about what sorts of sounds and
lighting I can use to unnerve my audience and this also kept in line
my plans for red/green lighting and loud blaring music. I also
researched several other aspects of films that would help in my
project such as films trailers, long takes, aspect ratio, shot transitions
and techniques that build tension and fear, all of this was useful for
getting a better understanding of how I could create interesting
content for my film/trailer. I started thinking about what I want to film
for my production experiments and I think that this was important as
it means that I can start transitioning my focus from research to
planning.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK
3
I think that the strengths of my research has been my exploration
of many subjects to build a better understanding of my concept
and how I will execute it. I think another strength of my research is
the study of my audience and the idea that I can improve on the
faults of films that have inspired my concept. I think that there are
other areas of film production that I could research however I want
to progress to the planning and pre-production stages of my FMP
so I think that if there's anything that I genuinely need to research
then I will do so in my own time and add it to my PowerPoint. I
think that the research I’ve done so far has helped me a lot with
visualising my concept and coming to a point of understanding
where I now know exactly what I’m going to make and I have a
greater understanding of how I will film/produce my film scene and
trailer. Overall my research has helped me to solidify my concept
and will influence and increase the appeal of my project.

This week I’ve been working on my problem solving power-point
which I will use to effectively solve issues that may occur in the
production process of this project. from what I’ve learnt making this
PowerPoint I think that the biggest issue that I’ll face in my
production will be filming as it’ll require a lot of planning to be
successful, in order to avoid as many problems as possible I know
that now I must set up all aspects of the filming production as early
on as possible (aspects such as a crew, actors and setting). In week
5 of production I’ll be working on my problem solving by doing
experiments with filming and making music so that I have more
preparation and practice when it comes to my actual production. I
think that if my music experiment goes well I can use it in my actual
video instead of wasting time trying to make something new in my
production. I know that doing this problem solving will help me to
make effective decisions during my production that will help me to
use my time efficiently as well as helping me to prevent theoretical
and practical issues.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK
4
I think that my biggest strength in my work this week is how
I’ve expressed what issues I’ll face through what problems
have influenced my work in the past, doing this has allowed
me to see what I could do differently and so I think that I’ve
been able to give better explanations of how I can solve and
prevent issues that I would face if I didn't have the
experience that I’ve gained on this course. I think that my
project is going well so far as I’m pleased with the
knowledge/understanding that I’ve learnt from my research
and I think that my problem solving has helped me to get a
better plan to avoid future issues in my production. I think
that something that worries me is the one take tracking shot
as I know that it’ll be a challenge to film however I’m
confident that if I plan enough then I can make it work to
great effect.

This weekI worked on my productionexperiments, doing thiswas
importantfor me as I think that the productionprocessissomethingthat I
need to be well prepared for so learningeditingand filmingtechniqueswill
help me a lot when it comes to production.I worked on lighting
experimentswhere I tested the capabilitiesof colouredlighting gelswhich
gave me a lot of answers for thoughts I had about what I will need to do to
make the lightingwork in my project.I also experimentedwith match cuts
where I failedto get the continuityright between cuts so this has taught
me to concentratemore on what the resultof the cut will looklikein these
shots. I did an experimentwhere I filma lot of one takes where the
camerawould followa person up and down stairsas I would need a
similarshot in my videoand it turned out fairlywell but I think that I will
need a shouldermount or some sort of equipmentthat’ll makethe
footage more stable.I think that the mainexperimentthat I did this week
was working on my musicas this took the most amount of time and effort,
I did this experimentas I wanted to get more practicefor makingmusicin
my production.I think that my musicturned out reallywell to a point where
I will most likelyuse it my scene however I will alsomake a secondtrack
duringproductionthat I will use in the trailer.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 5
As well as experiments I worked on a cast and crew list where I
decided on who I would want to work in my project and I’m pleased
with the list I just need to contact everyone now and see if they want
to do it so we can all decide on a date to film. I pretty much figured
out the total costs of the production so that I could go ahead in pre-
production knowing what I will need to spend money on. I think that
doing my experiments has taught me more about how I should be
approaching my production as I now have a better idea of what I
should be planning and how I should plan for it in my pre-
production. I think that before production starts I should have a
second attempt at making match cuts as this was something that
didn’t really work in my research so I think that trying this again
would help me a lot to grow my skills in editing and having a better
eye for detail so I keep the continuity between shots. I think this
week was a success for me as I managed to get a lot of work done
as well as progressing my skills with filming and editing.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 6
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 6
In this week I began my work on my pre-production power point. In this week I
wanted to explain the aesthetic/visual aspects that would go into the production
process, this meant planning out a variety of visual aspects. I started by explaining in
a couple of slides the cinematography, a distorted nightmare of a house party bathed
in primary colours, taking inspiration from films such as Suspiria (1977) and
Climax(2019) I explained how the cinematography would be similar to the colour lit
shots from my FMP last year. I wanted the lighting to feel unnatural so that the
audience would get a sense of paranoia, different colours would represent different
things such as red meaning danger or green signifying sickness. I liked explaining
the cinematography as it’s a plan that I’ve had since last year so I’m excited to finally
make it happen.
The next thing I started planning was the design of the masks as this would be a key
visual aspect as it would give a sinister vibe to the antagonist of the scene. To plan
the mask I researched various mask designs from different cultures and countries
such as African, Japanese, Mexican and Aztec mask designs. I was looking to find
designs that looked disturbing and had a certain horror aesthetic. I enjoyed planning
the mask designs as it gave me a good look at designs I can take inspiration from
when I make my own mask.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 6
The next thing I planned this week was the the visual aspects of the trailer. I made
a mood board of the trailer using images from horror films to represent what would
inspire certain shots and some images were there to set a mood for the trailer. I
also planned what font I would use for the title of the film which didn’t take too long
as I pretty much immediately found the font that I wanted to use as it stood out as
something that would look perfect with the colourful disturbing aesthetic of the film.
I think that designing the visuals of the trailer was quite fun, I liked my mood board
especially as it sort of encapsulates the trailer and I’m really pleased with my font
choice as well.
My colour scheme was something that I had already planned out a while ago which
where primary colours green, blue and red as I knew that these would be the
colours of light that I would use. I made a colour scheme out of darker versions of
these colours as I wanted my scene to have quite a dark aesthetic. I’m not sure
there is much I can do to improve my colour scheme slide as there isn’t much to
talk about, I just want to film it with these three colours.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 6
In this week I also wrote the profiles of the characters who will appear in the film scene, I wrote
mainly about their appearances and motivations in the scene, this should help out when I’m writing
my screenplay this week as well as being useful information for the actors. I’m pleased with the
characters for now but I have a feeling that I might not be able to use them due to the ever
increasing possibility of lockdown due to the corona virus, if this happens I will have to use an fairly
different scene idea instead which I will write about in my problem solving powerpoint next week.
I have also made mood boards for the designs of various rooms in the house/set which are the
kitchen, the staircase/landing and the room where one of the characters is killed. I think that my
mood boards for these rooms were a good quality as I made sure that the images I used would
match my desired aesthetic and I wrote about why this was important in those slides.
Overall I think that I managed to do a lot of high quality work this week which I hope to keep up
next week as I move on to planning more technical aspects. I think that my planning is running very
smoothly due to my preparation and the idea I came up with to split my work into two loads,
aesthetic and technical elements. All I need to do in my planning now is to make lists of equipment,
make a screenplay and storyboards and add anything extra that I might need.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 7
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 7
IMPORTANT: In my time of writing this I’ve been ill for the last two weeks and unable to
work because of it. I had a pretty bad cough and headaches a few days before lockdown so
I was self isolating along with my family due to the fact that I had symptoms of the virus. So I
haven’t been able to make any progress for a while. EXTRA IMPORTANT: I’m having to
work on my old laptop which can’t take screenshots so unfortunately I won’t be able to
include images of my work in the weekly reflections now. I didn’t manage to finish my
reflections for week 6 before I became ill so you’ll notice that week 6 has no screenshots
either. it’s safe to say that the lockdown and the illness I had will have a negative effect on
the quality of my work. I’m going to need to add even more slides to my planning and I’m
going to have to change the scene I planned to be entirely different to what I had in mind. I
currently feel really tired and sad that I can’t go ahead with the ideas that I wanted, and I’ll
have to settle for something a lot more generic. I’m frustrated that I’ve been set back so far
from where I should be right now (I have friends who have already filmed their projects and
are editing) and that I’ve been pretty much powerless as to whats caused this. I still want to
work toward making my film to the best it can be, and I believe that I can do this, but it’s
going to take a lot more effort and time. I’m still aiming to get a distinction, and I’m going to
put in the effort to achieve this.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 7
Unfortunately I haven’t managed to progress much of my pre-production work this week as I’ve had
some feedback from my tutor at the start of the week about all of my work in the project so far. Instead
of developing my plans this week I’ve been improving the work I’ve done up until now, so I’ve been
completing and editing my proposal so it’s to a higher level of quality and I’ve been adding to my
problem solving powerpoint about my new plan to continue my project even in lockdown.
I’ve been finding it difficult to concentrate on my work due to the lockdown, I’ve always had some
difficulty concentrating so being out of a work environment has definitely not been ideal for me to work
in. I’ve tried getting rid of any distractions and working out of my room so that I can focus more and this
is working fairly well for now, I know that I’m not really making the same amount of work that I would in
college but I’m trying to concentrate on bringing a high level of quality to my work.
Next week I hope to write a screen play and story boards for my plans, I might be able to finish my pre-
production however if I’m unable to then I will just finish it off the week after, I hope to be able to film my
project on week 9 however I’m not sure how long filming will take due to the fact that my dad who will
be filming the project has no prior experience with cameras and my brother has no past experience of
acting so it will probably take longer than I thought it would take to film.
At the moment I am worried that I might not be able to finish my project in time due to the period where
I was ill and unable to work, however I think that at the pace that I’m going I have a chance that I can
catch up and still make an entertaining horror scene.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 8
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 8
In this week I’ve almost completed my pre-production so when I finish it at the start of
next week I will begin the process of filming and editing my work. I’m worried that due
to the absence of a proper crew and actors the quality of my work could suffer greatly
however I believe that if I use all the skills I’ve learnt over my time in this course I can
make something that resembles my original intentions.
The first thing I did this week was make my story boards which I think went well and
gave me a good outline of what I want the scene to look like but I probably should’ve
made my screenplay before this as it meant that the storyboards will look a bit
different from how my final draft of my screenplay will look. At the moment I have
made two drafts for my screenplay which haven’t been very successful, main issues
being character development and incorrect formatting. My main character pretty
much existed to move along the plot in the first draft and he was given a love interest
in the second draft which I don’t think added any sort of actual character
development so I’m going for a different approach in next draft I write and I’ll be using
StudioBinder to write it so that the formatting is correct. I’m hoping that my next
attempt at the screenplay will make the main character a bit more compelling so that
his death is more impactful.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 8
This week I have also made some concept sketches or the shot on
the staircase and in the bedroom when the protagonist in the scene
is killed, I made these sketches as a way to visualise what these
particular shots would look like and how they should make the
viewer feel. I managed to find a stone plate at my grandads house
this week and it had a creepy sun face on it which I thought would
make for a cool mask for the killer to wear so I brought it home and
added a slide about it to my pre-production. This week I’ve also
made some updates to my preproduction talking about how the plan
has changed due to lockdown and some images of areas in my
house where I’ll be filming and why I chose to film there.
Next week I will be making a shot list and finishing off my
screenplay so that I can start filming. I’m looking foreward to finally
getting some production work done as it’ll give me a stronger sense
of progression due to the last couple of weeks feeling like catch up.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 9
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 9
At the beginning of this week I was working on finishing off my pre-
production so that I could get on with filming. The first thing I did
was to complete the final draft of the screen play where the main
character now has a friend and they engage in a conversation about
how strange it was that they were invited to the party, it makes the
characters seem more realistic and gives some mystery as to the
nature of the party. The main characters friend goes upstairs to
have a drinking contest with someone they met earlier which gives
incentive for the main character to investigate when he hears a loud
sound from upstairs as he’s worried about his friend. I really like the
changes I made to the screenplay as it makes the characters a lot
more believable and gives the audience a reason to be shocked
when they are killed off. I used studio binder this time so the
screenplay has a more accurate format so this will definitely be my
final version of the screenplay which gave me some relief as I could
finally move on to filming the scene.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 9
After finishing my screenplay I arranged a day with my family when
we would be able to film. The agreement was that my dad would
film and me and my brother would act and if my brother wasn’t in a
shot then he would be filming and if I wasn’t in a shot then I would
film. We only managed to film for one night this week which is a
shame as I was hoping to maybe finish filming by the end of the
week however I realised very quickly that this wouldn’t be the case.
When we started filming I had to teach my dad how to use the
camera which was difficult for him as he needed glasses to see if
the camera was focused and he often found it hard to keep focus.
This resulted in us doing several takes of the same shot to the point
where after a whole night of filming we only managed to shoot one
shot that was good enough for the scene. I get the feeling that
filming could take until the end of next week in which case I think it
would be best to edit the footage during the day and film footage at
night so that I’m still able to get work done even during the time that
I’m not filming.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 9
I’m really pleased with the progress I’ve made this week even if I
wasn’t able to do as much filming as I wanted as now that I’ve
actually started filming I feel as if I’m moving forwards with my work.
Next week I’d like to finish filming and make some progress with
editing which should be achievable. I think that filming will be much
easier next week as my dad now has a better understanding of how
to film with the camera and there will be a lot less that needs to be
set up. When we were filming this week we needed to have a bunch
of clear space in the dinning room and lots of bottles out on the
table so that we could get an atmosphere of a party in the scene
and this worked however it took a lot of time but now we don’t need
to do anything like that in the rest of the shots so we should be
better for time. I will be working on my brothers Mac in order to edit
the film so I will be using Final Cut Pro to edit the film which may be
an issue as I’ve never used that editing software before so that will
likely be my biggest issue next week so I will watch some videos on
how to edit on it.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 10
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 10
I began this week by having me and my brother film some more
shots for the dinning room scene. I wasn’t editing at the start of the
week as I only had one shot so there was essentially nothing to edit
but once me and my brother had filmed all the shots in the dinning
room and on the staircase I began editing. Getting used to Final Cut
Pro wasn’t very easy, in fact I’m still not used to it as it’s format is
very different to that of Adobe Premiere which is what I’ve used to
edit all my work so far. So far I’ve arranged all of my footage in
order so that it there is a clear timeline of events, I’m yet to properly
cut the clips or work on any audio/music for the scene. Later in the
week I filmed the scene on the stairway and in the bedroom. I
managed to complete my objective from lat week which was to get
all of my footage filmed. I’d say the hardest moment this week was
to film the shot where I had blood running down my face as the fake
blood ran down into my mouth and nose which made it difficult to
tell my brother to start filming. The fake blood stained my face the
day after which was pretty annoying but at least we got a good shot
out of it.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 10
I think that I managed to get quite a lot done this week and I’m
especially happy that we managed to complete filming. My next
goal for next week is to complete a first draft edit of the scene so
that I can get some feedback for it, I think this would help as it
would mean that I can make big improvements to my work in the
week after. I would’ve liked to do some more editing this week but I
didn’t have much time to do so as my brother needed to use his
Mac quite a bit this week as he’s learning to programme so he’s
agreed that I will get to use the Mac for much longer next week so
that I can complete a first edit. I’m looking forward to seeing what
the scene will look like when it’s complete because I think that most
of the shots worked really well for what we had available. I think that
next week I will likely struggle with editing as I did this week
however I have been watching videos on how to edit in Final Cut so
I think that I will have a better idea of what to do so that I can edit
quicker and more effectively.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 11
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 11
This week I made a big decision which would make for a big change
from my planning to my video, this will be the colour scheme as I
have decided not to use colour filters to imitate coloured lighting.
The reason I’ve made this change is because it just didn’t look as
good, mainly due to it being obviously fake. I’m glad I made this
change as I’d rather have the video deviate from the plan than stick
to the plan even if it means risking the quality of my work. I’m happy
with the work that I’ve done so far this week as I’ve made a first edit
of the video which required me to make sound effects, make a bit of
music and film a bit more footage to add to the edit. I started the
week by recording myself chopping some potatoes which would be
the sound effect for my character being struck by the cleaver. I also
recorded the sound that my character hears before he goes to
investigate which I recorded my slamming my hand on the table a
bunch of time and grouping it together to make a loud thudding
sound. I enjoyed making the sound effects for the video which I
would edit in Garage Band and then add to my video.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 11
After adding in the sound effects I filmed a shot of the sun mask and
overlaid it on top of the sunflower painting as a way of
foreshadowing the arrival of the mask which was simply something I
decided to add in as I was filming a shot of the painting. I’ve found
that I’m actually getting the hang of using final cut so I’m a lot more
comfortable using it now compared to how I was when I started.
Unfortunately I forgot to send myself the music I made while I was
in college so instead of making more music I added some pre-
existing music instead which wasn’t something I particularly wanted
to do however I did it for the sake of time constraints. I made sure
that the music that I used matched the visual style of the video and
my brother created a reverse guitar sample to put over the scene
where the masked killer emerges which I think sounds really good
and fits that shot really well. Next week I’m going to get some
feedback for what I’ve done so far and then improve my video. I’m
thinking that if everything goes according to plan I should be able to
finish production next week.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 12
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 12
This week I’ve had some feedback from family, friends and peers so
that I can improve my video. Before I made any improvements I
added a slide to the beginning of the video which makes it clear that
the scene was filmed in lockdown so the quality isn’t as good as it
could be (this was mainly referring to my awful acting). The biggest
improvement that I made was the addition of music at the start of
my scene with the addition of a crowd sound effect which made it
seem like there were more people in the house, this made the film
sound more like a party which greatly improved the atmosphere of
the scene. Another improvement that I made was the realisation
that I had spelt sacrifices wrong as I had typed sacrafices for the
title instead which is something that I quickly altered. Some people
liked the sudden cut of sound as my character looked up at the killer
and my dad and brother thought it was an odd addition however I
decided to keep it in as I thought that it gave a short shock of
silence to the build up of sound. I think that if I were to do this
project again I would improve the dialogue as I think that it limited
our acting a bit which is why this was probably the least appealing
aspect of the video.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 12
Thanks to all of the constructive criticism I was able to improve my
work to a point where I was able to complete a greatly improved
version of the video which had a much better atmosphere and was
free from preventible errors. Something that surprised me was the
amount of positive feedback that I got. Everyone I showed it to had
something good to say whether it was the shots of the character
staring at the painting, the choice of music or the action and
makeup. Hearing what everyones had to say has given me a lot
more confidence in what I’ve managed to make with so little
resources. I think that next week I will try to improve the audio
quality with the help of my brother as he has a lot of knowledge in
this area and then I’ll move on to my evaluation of the project. I
think that it’s crazy how even though all of these restrictions were
placed on my I was able to make something that people still find
entertaining and that a project that I thought would need several
people acting and working in a crew only needed three people to
make something that I can be proud of.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 13
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 13
This week I wanted to start and finish the first draft for my evaluation
as I’ve now completed my production. I started the week by looking
through all of my PowerPoints and my previous reflections and
writing about how I felt during each stage of the project and what I
did in each stage. This took quite a while as there was a lot of work
to look through and summarise however I was happy with how it
turned out in the evaluation and I think that putting the time in to do
that was worth it. In my production slides of the evaluation I wrote
about aesthetic and technical aspects of my production which
included what I liked about these details as well as what I would’ve
improved if I had more time or if I was filming under different
circumstances. The Corona virus lockdown has massively affected
my work so I think that it was important to write about what changes
it made in my evaluation as if lockdown hadn’t happened then my
project would likely look very different to how it does now. I’m happy
with how I described each stage of production as well as the
challenges I faced and issues I managed to overcome during
production, I think that writing the evaluation has given me a chance
to further reflect of the progress I’ve made in this project.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 13
The next part of my evaluation was to talk about my time
management as well as my audience appeal which were two things
I had in mind throughout the project. I thought that I’d used planning
effectively to have an efficient use of time throughout the project
however I believe that my audience appeal could've been better
suited to my older target audience if I had the necessary resources
to create a more gruesome horror film. In the next stage of my
evaluation I wrote down some feedback I got from peers when I
showed them the first draft of my peers, I then took that feedback
and made improvements to my video and now the video is on my
website and I’ve wrote about the feedback to finish the evaluation. I
found the feedback I received really helpful and surprising it
seemed like they enjoyed the film so that's a success for me. I have
completed the evaluation but I will send it to my tutor to get some
feedback so I can make some improvements. I’m proud of the
project I’ve managed to make despite the set backs and I think that
I’ve learnt quite a lot about staying on track while facing difficulties.

weekly reflections

  • 3. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 1 My targetaudienceis teenagersand young adults aged 16-21as in my researchfor last years FMP I discoveredthat thiswas the ideal audiencefor a horrorfilm and I think thatit’ll be good to stick to this as it gave me a lot of freedomlastyear so havinga similar audienceclassificationshouldn'tbe an issue.I think thatmy project could be focusedmore on appealingto both a male and female audiencethis time as the film has a male and female protagonistwho come from different backgroundsso it shouldappeal evenly to bothaudiences.I think thatoverall my audiencewon’t be to differentfrom lastyears FMP but I’veimproved it so that the genderof my audienceis more balanced. The projectis importantto me as it’s a conceptthatI’ve been trying to developfor the pastyear so I knowwhat I’m wanting to createwhen planning and developing my project. As I’vemainly been researchingthis week I’ve lookedat thehorror films/mediainspiredmy project and explainedhow it’s impactedmy conceptand where it fit’s in to my concept, doing this has allowed me to get a better understandingof my work and givenme a bettergraspon the cinematographyof the films I’ve lookedat and how I could incorporatethis into my project.I want to createa scenethattakes placeall in one trackingshotand this requires a lot of researchan planningso lookingat othermedia has helped me discoverwhat I want my projectto functionas well as why it’s so importantto me as it’ll prove my capabilitieswith the horrorgenre.
  • 4. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 1 I think that the main difficultiesI could run into in this project are that my planningcould proveuselesswhen I’m actually filmingmy projectand becauseI want to film one long takemy planningis fundamentalto my success so I need to put a lot of effortinto planningout exactly how the scene will work. I think that an issue I may find in my primary research(which I will be doing in week 2) is the survey as I need to make sure that I can find a placeto shareit so that I can get a lot of replies as well as making sure my questions are necessary and important.I think that as long as I can for the eventualityof main problems I may face I can make it throughthe FMP without much issue. Otherthan horrorfilms my key influencesare from the play Romeo and Juliet as the plot of the play is a major influenceon my film conceptas I would give my film the subgenreof a romance/tragedy mainly due to how I envisionmy film ending however I’m not sure this influencewill be felt in the sceneI’m making as the scene is more actionfocused.I’m yet to speak about music's influencein my researchhowever I want to explainhow I want the soundtrack to my film to work as well as the music that’sinspiredthis decision.
  • 5. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 1 In my previous projects I’ve learnt to become better at organizing which should be really helpful for planning this project and making sure all my actors show up or that I have back up actors incase things go wrong. In last years FMP I worked with coloured lights which I want to use in this project as well as it adds a nice aesthetic as well as being something I have experience with. I think that I need to build my confidence work with actors as the scene I’m filming will require some pretty emotive acting so I want to develop my directing skills so I can get the best possible performances from my actors. I also want to develop my skills with making music as in my last project I wanted to make music and it took up a lot of production time so this time I want to make music again but I want to research and plan in advance so that I can produce it more efficiently.
  • 6. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 1 I think that so far I’ve done agoodjob explainingmy influences as well as the techniques that I want to incorporate into the scene. I’ve alsoresearched into horror/film theoryto get a betterunderstanding of what make agood movie andhow I canimprovemy style of horror whichI believehas beensuccessful so far. I think that my main issuewhen researchinghas beenthat I’ve foundit difficult to keep upa good pacewhile writing so I’ve found myself falling behinda bit however thisshouldn't be to much of an issueas I can catch upoutsideof collegeand I’m gettingfaster at writing now. In week two I want to finishmy research entirelyby completingmy secondary and primaryresearchincludinginterviews and a survey. I alsowant to start my planning asI think that this will be oneof the most important parts of my FMP.
  • 7. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL: You are required to keep a weekly reflective journal. The aim of the reflective journal is for you to discuss the challenges, obstacles and difficulties you are managing and solving during your FMP project. This can be in one of the following formats:  Written journal (min. 300 words)  Video journal (min. 3 mins)  Audio journal (min. 3 mins)
  • 9. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 2 This week I’ve added my target audience to my research PowerPoint so that I can show who my project is being made for, I made a survey so that I can get some feedback on how I can improve my initial concept. I looked into different aspects of film making and how I would incorporate them into my project such as the music, lighting and writing, I found this useful as it helped me to imagine how the finished product should look and sound like. In my audience research I looked at the reviews for films that had influenced me and pointed out the faults in these films and how I can improve upon these issues in my project. I think that the most important thing I did this week was to look into important directing skills such as writing screenplays and directing actors as I can tell that these are really going to help me during production with the organisation of filming. Directing actors will probably help me the most as it will make filming more efficient as well as improving the performances that I get.
  • 10. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 2 next week I will need to do some research into filming techniques such as long takes as this will be the key aspect to my filming, I also need to send my survey out so that I can analyse the feedback I get and explain how it will help me in my project. I want to look at some horror film trailers and explain how they will influence the trailer that I want to make for my film. I’d say the hardest part of this week was explaining how music and lighting has influenced me, I watched scenes from Suspiria and Carrie and Listened to lot’s of different songs which had the tone that I’d be aiming for in my scene, I think that writing about these subjects was difficult for me because it’s hard to describe what makes these elements so impactful for me. I went through these slides a couple of times because I wanted to talk about the technical elements of these subjects rather than how the music/lighting made me feel as I think that looking at the technical aspects is more important for research purposes.
  • 11. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 2 I think that the most important part of my research this week was my primary research into directing non-actors/actors as I think that this has taught me some really useful skill that I can use on set. I watched D4Darious for this and I think that his videos are really great as he gets to the point quickly and it’s clear that he has a lot of experience with film making. Something else that will be really useful is the research I did into screen plays as it’s given me a new way to help my self and the actors. I think that my next week of research I’ll probably run into issues with my survey, I think that I’ll probably get some responses that aren’t really what I’m hoping however most of the questions aren’t really there to effect my video but to find out more about who would watch my film and how I could make it more appealing to them.
  • 13. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 3 The first thing I did this week was finishing my audience research as I wanted to learn more about how my audience felt about the current state of horror films and the results of this survey surprised me as they reinforced that my concept and plans would appeal to most audience members which was something I wasn’t actually expecting. The research survey also told me about what sorts of sounds and lighting I can use to unnerve my audience and this also kept in line my plans for red/green lighting and loud blaring music. I also researched several other aspects of films that would help in my project such as films trailers, long takes, aspect ratio, shot transitions and techniques that build tension and fear, all of this was useful for getting a better understanding of how I could create interesting content for my film/trailer. I started thinking about what I want to film for my production experiments and I think that this was important as it means that I can start transitioning my focus from research to planning.
  • 14. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 3 I think that the strengths of my research has been my exploration of many subjects to build a better understanding of my concept and how I will execute it. I think another strength of my research is the study of my audience and the idea that I can improve on the faults of films that have inspired my concept. I think that there are other areas of film production that I could research however I want to progress to the planning and pre-production stages of my FMP so I think that if there's anything that I genuinely need to research then I will do so in my own time and add it to my PowerPoint. I think that the research I’ve done so far has helped me a lot with visualising my concept and coming to a point of understanding where I now know exactly what I’m going to make and I have a greater understanding of how I will film/produce my film scene and trailer. Overall my research has helped me to solidify my concept and will influence and increase the appeal of my project.
  • 16. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 4 This week I’ve been working on my problem solving power-point which I will use to effectively solve issues that may occur in the production process of this project. from what I’ve learnt making this PowerPoint I think that the biggest issue that I’ll face in my production will be filming as it’ll require a lot of planning to be successful, in order to avoid as many problems as possible I know that now I must set up all aspects of the filming production as early on as possible (aspects such as a crew, actors and setting). In week 5 of production I’ll be working on my problem solving by doing experiments with filming and making music so that I have more preparation and practice when it comes to my actual production. I think that if my music experiment goes well I can use it in my actual video instead of wasting time trying to make something new in my production. I know that doing this problem solving will help me to make effective decisions during my production that will help me to use my time efficiently as well as helping me to prevent theoretical and practical issues.
  • 17. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 4 I think that my biggest strength in my work this week is how I’ve expressed what issues I’ll face through what problems have influenced my work in the past, doing this has allowed me to see what I could do differently and so I think that I’ve been able to give better explanations of how I can solve and prevent issues that I would face if I didn't have the experience that I’ve gained on this course. I think that my project is going well so far as I’m pleased with the knowledge/understanding that I’ve learnt from my research and I think that my problem solving has helped me to get a better plan to avoid future issues in my production. I think that something that worries me is the one take tracking shot as I know that it’ll be a challenge to film however I’m confident that if I plan enough then I can make it work to great effect.
  • 19. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 5 This weekI worked on my productionexperiments, doing thiswas importantfor me as I think that the productionprocessissomethingthat I need to be well prepared for so learningeditingand filmingtechniqueswill help me a lot when it comes to production.I worked on lighting experimentswhere I tested the capabilitiesof colouredlighting gelswhich gave me a lot of answers for thoughts I had about what I will need to do to make the lightingwork in my project.I also experimentedwith match cuts where I failedto get the continuityright between cuts so this has taught me to concentratemore on what the resultof the cut will looklikein these shots. I did an experimentwhere I filma lot of one takes where the camerawould followa person up and down stairsas I would need a similarshot in my videoand it turned out fairlywell but I think that I will need a shouldermount or some sort of equipmentthat’ll makethe footage more stable.I think that the mainexperimentthat I did this week was working on my musicas this took the most amount of time and effort, I did this experimentas I wanted to get more practicefor makingmusicin my production.I think that my musicturned out reallywell to a point where I will most likelyuse it my scene however I will alsomake a secondtrack duringproductionthat I will use in the trailer.
  • 20. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 5 As well as experiments I worked on a cast and crew list where I decided on who I would want to work in my project and I’m pleased with the list I just need to contact everyone now and see if they want to do it so we can all decide on a date to film. I pretty much figured out the total costs of the production so that I could go ahead in pre- production knowing what I will need to spend money on. I think that doing my experiments has taught me more about how I should be approaching my production as I now have a better idea of what I should be planning and how I should plan for it in my pre- production. I think that before production starts I should have a second attempt at making match cuts as this was something that didn’t really work in my research so I think that trying this again would help me a lot to grow my skills in editing and having a better eye for detail so I keep the continuity between shots. I think this week was a success for me as I managed to get a lot of work done as well as progressing my skills with filming and editing.
  • 22. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 6 In this week I began my work on my pre-production power point. In this week I wanted to explain the aesthetic/visual aspects that would go into the production process, this meant planning out a variety of visual aspects. I started by explaining in a couple of slides the cinematography, a distorted nightmare of a house party bathed in primary colours, taking inspiration from films such as Suspiria (1977) and Climax(2019) I explained how the cinematography would be similar to the colour lit shots from my FMP last year. I wanted the lighting to feel unnatural so that the audience would get a sense of paranoia, different colours would represent different things such as red meaning danger or green signifying sickness. I liked explaining the cinematography as it’s a plan that I’ve had since last year so I’m excited to finally make it happen. The next thing I started planning was the design of the masks as this would be a key visual aspect as it would give a sinister vibe to the antagonist of the scene. To plan the mask I researched various mask designs from different cultures and countries such as African, Japanese, Mexican and Aztec mask designs. I was looking to find designs that looked disturbing and had a certain horror aesthetic. I enjoyed planning the mask designs as it gave me a good look at designs I can take inspiration from when I make my own mask.
  • 23. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 6 The next thing I planned this week was the the visual aspects of the trailer. I made a mood board of the trailer using images from horror films to represent what would inspire certain shots and some images were there to set a mood for the trailer. I also planned what font I would use for the title of the film which didn’t take too long as I pretty much immediately found the font that I wanted to use as it stood out as something that would look perfect with the colourful disturbing aesthetic of the film. I think that designing the visuals of the trailer was quite fun, I liked my mood board especially as it sort of encapsulates the trailer and I’m really pleased with my font choice as well. My colour scheme was something that I had already planned out a while ago which where primary colours green, blue and red as I knew that these would be the colours of light that I would use. I made a colour scheme out of darker versions of these colours as I wanted my scene to have quite a dark aesthetic. I’m not sure there is much I can do to improve my colour scheme slide as there isn’t much to talk about, I just want to film it with these three colours.
  • 24. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 6 In this week I also wrote the profiles of the characters who will appear in the film scene, I wrote mainly about their appearances and motivations in the scene, this should help out when I’m writing my screenplay this week as well as being useful information for the actors. I’m pleased with the characters for now but I have a feeling that I might not be able to use them due to the ever increasing possibility of lockdown due to the corona virus, if this happens I will have to use an fairly different scene idea instead which I will write about in my problem solving powerpoint next week. I have also made mood boards for the designs of various rooms in the house/set which are the kitchen, the staircase/landing and the room where one of the characters is killed. I think that my mood boards for these rooms were a good quality as I made sure that the images I used would match my desired aesthetic and I wrote about why this was important in those slides. Overall I think that I managed to do a lot of high quality work this week which I hope to keep up next week as I move on to planning more technical aspects. I think that my planning is running very smoothly due to my preparation and the idea I came up with to split my work into two loads, aesthetic and technical elements. All I need to do in my planning now is to make lists of equipment, make a screenplay and storyboards and add anything extra that I might need.
  • 26. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 7 IMPORTANT: In my time of writing this I’ve been ill for the last two weeks and unable to work because of it. I had a pretty bad cough and headaches a few days before lockdown so I was self isolating along with my family due to the fact that I had symptoms of the virus. So I haven’t been able to make any progress for a while. EXTRA IMPORTANT: I’m having to work on my old laptop which can’t take screenshots so unfortunately I won’t be able to include images of my work in the weekly reflections now. I didn’t manage to finish my reflections for week 6 before I became ill so you’ll notice that week 6 has no screenshots either. it’s safe to say that the lockdown and the illness I had will have a negative effect on the quality of my work. I’m going to need to add even more slides to my planning and I’m going to have to change the scene I planned to be entirely different to what I had in mind. I currently feel really tired and sad that I can’t go ahead with the ideas that I wanted, and I’ll have to settle for something a lot more generic. I’m frustrated that I’ve been set back so far from where I should be right now (I have friends who have already filmed their projects and are editing) and that I’ve been pretty much powerless as to whats caused this. I still want to work toward making my film to the best it can be, and I believe that I can do this, but it’s going to take a lot more effort and time. I’m still aiming to get a distinction, and I’m going to put in the effort to achieve this.
  • 27. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 7 Unfortunately I haven’t managed to progress much of my pre-production work this week as I’ve had some feedback from my tutor at the start of the week about all of my work in the project so far. Instead of developing my plans this week I’ve been improving the work I’ve done up until now, so I’ve been completing and editing my proposal so it’s to a higher level of quality and I’ve been adding to my problem solving powerpoint about my new plan to continue my project even in lockdown. I’ve been finding it difficult to concentrate on my work due to the lockdown, I’ve always had some difficulty concentrating so being out of a work environment has definitely not been ideal for me to work in. I’ve tried getting rid of any distractions and working out of my room so that I can focus more and this is working fairly well for now, I know that I’m not really making the same amount of work that I would in college but I’m trying to concentrate on bringing a high level of quality to my work. Next week I hope to write a screen play and story boards for my plans, I might be able to finish my pre- production however if I’m unable to then I will just finish it off the week after, I hope to be able to film my project on week 9 however I’m not sure how long filming will take due to the fact that my dad who will be filming the project has no prior experience with cameras and my brother has no past experience of acting so it will probably take longer than I thought it would take to film. At the moment I am worried that I might not be able to finish my project in time due to the period where I was ill and unable to work, however I think that at the pace that I’m going I have a chance that I can catch up and still make an entertaining horror scene.
  • 29. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 8 In this week I’ve almost completed my pre-production so when I finish it at the start of next week I will begin the process of filming and editing my work. I’m worried that due to the absence of a proper crew and actors the quality of my work could suffer greatly however I believe that if I use all the skills I’ve learnt over my time in this course I can make something that resembles my original intentions. The first thing I did this week was make my story boards which I think went well and gave me a good outline of what I want the scene to look like but I probably should’ve made my screenplay before this as it meant that the storyboards will look a bit different from how my final draft of my screenplay will look. At the moment I have made two drafts for my screenplay which haven’t been very successful, main issues being character development and incorrect formatting. My main character pretty much existed to move along the plot in the first draft and he was given a love interest in the second draft which I don’t think added any sort of actual character development so I’m going for a different approach in next draft I write and I’ll be using StudioBinder to write it so that the formatting is correct. I’m hoping that my next attempt at the screenplay will make the main character a bit more compelling so that his death is more impactful.
  • 30. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 8 This week I have also made some concept sketches or the shot on the staircase and in the bedroom when the protagonist in the scene is killed, I made these sketches as a way to visualise what these particular shots would look like and how they should make the viewer feel. I managed to find a stone plate at my grandads house this week and it had a creepy sun face on it which I thought would make for a cool mask for the killer to wear so I brought it home and added a slide about it to my pre-production. This week I’ve also made some updates to my preproduction talking about how the plan has changed due to lockdown and some images of areas in my house where I’ll be filming and why I chose to film there. Next week I will be making a shot list and finishing off my screenplay so that I can start filming. I’m looking foreward to finally getting some production work done as it’ll give me a stronger sense of progression due to the last couple of weeks feeling like catch up.
  • 32. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 9 At the beginning of this week I was working on finishing off my pre- production so that I could get on with filming. The first thing I did was to complete the final draft of the screen play where the main character now has a friend and they engage in a conversation about how strange it was that they were invited to the party, it makes the characters seem more realistic and gives some mystery as to the nature of the party. The main characters friend goes upstairs to have a drinking contest with someone they met earlier which gives incentive for the main character to investigate when he hears a loud sound from upstairs as he’s worried about his friend. I really like the changes I made to the screenplay as it makes the characters a lot more believable and gives the audience a reason to be shocked when they are killed off. I used studio binder this time so the screenplay has a more accurate format so this will definitely be my final version of the screenplay which gave me some relief as I could finally move on to filming the scene.
  • 33. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 9 After finishing my screenplay I arranged a day with my family when we would be able to film. The agreement was that my dad would film and me and my brother would act and if my brother wasn’t in a shot then he would be filming and if I wasn’t in a shot then I would film. We only managed to film for one night this week which is a shame as I was hoping to maybe finish filming by the end of the week however I realised very quickly that this wouldn’t be the case. When we started filming I had to teach my dad how to use the camera which was difficult for him as he needed glasses to see if the camera was focused and he often found it hard to keep focus. This resulted in us doing several takes of the same shot to the point where after a whole night of filming we only managed to shoot one shot that was good enough for the scene. I get the feeling that filming could take until the end of next week in which case I think it would be best to edit the footage during the day and film footage at night so that I’m still able to get work done even during the time that I’m not filming.
  • 34. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 9 I’m really pleased with the progress I’ve made this week even if I wasn’t able to do as much filming as I wanted as now that I’ve actually started filming I feel as if I’m moving forwards with my work. Next week I’d like to finish filming and make some progress with editing which should be achievable. I think that filming will be much easier next week as my dad now has a better understanding of how to film with the camera and there will be a lot less that needs to be set up. When we were filming this week we needed to have a bunch of clear space in the dinning room and lots of bottles out on the table so that we could get an atmosphere of a party in the scene and this worked however it took a lot of time but now we don’t need to do anything like that in the rest of the shots so we should be better for time. I will be working on my brothers Mac in order to edit the film so I will be using Final Cut Pro to edit the film which may be an issue as I’ve never used that editing software before so that will likely be my biggest issue next week so I will watch some videos on how to edit on it.
  • 36. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 10 I began this week by having me and my brother film some more shots for the dinning room scene. I wasn’t editing at the start of the week as I only had one shot so there was essentially nothing to edit but once me and my brother had filmed all the shots in the dinning room and on the staircase I began editing. Getting used to Final Cut Pro wasn’t very easy, in fact I’m still not used to it as it’s format is very different to that of Adobe Premiere which is what I’ve used to edit all my work so far. So far I’ve arranged all of my footage in order so that it there is a clear timeline of events, I’m yet to properly cut the clips or work on any audio/music for the scene. Later in the week I filmed the scene on the stairway and in the bedroom. I managed to complete my objective from lat week which was to get all of my footage filmed. I’d say the hardest moment this week was to film the shot where I had blood running down my face as the fake blood ran down into my mouth and nose which made it difficult to tell my brother to start filming. The fake blood stained my face the day after which was pretty annoying but at least we got a good shot out of it.
  • 37. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 10 I think that I managed to get quite a lot done this week and I’m especially happy that we managed to complete filming. My next goal for next week is to complete a first draft edit of the scene so that I can get some feedback for it, I think this would help as it would mean that I can make big improvements to my work in the week after. I would’ve liked to do some more editing this week but I didn’t have much time to do so as my brother needed to use his Mac quite a bit this week as he’s learning to programme so he’s agreed that I will get to use the Mac for much longer next week so that I can complete a first edit. I’m looking forward to seeing what the scene will look like when it’s complete because I think that most of the shots worked really well for what we had available. I think that next week I will likely struggle with editing as I did this week however I have been watching videos on how to edit in Final Cut so I think that I will have a better idea of what to do so that I can edit quicker and more effectively.
  • 39. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 11 This week I made a big decision which would make for a big change from my planning to my video, this will be the colour scheme as I have decided not to use colour filters to imitate coloured lighting. The reason I’ve made this change is because it just didn’t look as good, mainly due to it being obviously fake. I’m glad I made this change as I’d rather have the video deviate from the plan than stick to the plan even if it means risking the quality of my work. I’m happy with the work that I’ve done so far this week as I’ve made a first edit of the video which required me to make sound effects, make a bit of music and film a bit more footage to add to the edit. I started the week by recording myself chopping some potatoes which would be the sound effect for my character being struck by the cleaver. I also recorded the sound that my character hears before he goes to investigate which I recorded my slamming my hand on the table a bunch of time and grouping it together to make a loud thudding sound. I enjoyed making the sound effects for the video which I would edit in Garage Band and then add to my video.
  • 40. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 11 After adding in the sound effects I filmed a shot of the sun mask and overlaid it on top of the sunflower painting as a way of foreshadowing the arrival of the mask which was simply something I decided to add in as I was filming a shot of the painting. I’ve found that I’m actually getting the hang of using final cut so I’m a lot more comfortable using it now compared to how I was when I started. Unfortunately I forgot to send myself the music I made while I was in college so instead of making more music I added some pre- existing music instead which wasn’t something I particularly wanted to do however I did it for the sake of time constraints. I made sure that the music that I used matched the visual style of the video and my brother created a reverse guitar sample to put over the scene where the masked killer emerges which I think sounds really good and fits that shot really well. Next week I’m going to get some feedback for what I’ve done so far and then improve my video. I’m thinking that if everything goes according to plan I should be able to finish production next week.
  • 42. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 12 This week I’ve had some feedback from family, friends and peers so that I can improve my video. Before I made any improvements I added a slide to the beginning of the video which makes it clear that the scene was filmed in lockdown so the quality isn’t as good as it could be (this was mainly referring to my awful acting). The biggest improvement that I made was the addition of music at the start of my scene with the addition of a crowd sound effect which made it seem like there were more people in the house, this made the film sound more like a party which greatly improved the atmosphere of the scene. Another improvement that I made was the realisation that I had spelt sacrifices wrong as I had typed sacrafices for the title instead which is something that I quickly altered. Some people liked the sudden cut of sound as my character looked up at the killer and my dad and brother thought it was an odd addition however I decided to keep it in as I thought that it gave a short shock of silence to the build up of sound. I think that if I were to do this project again I would improve the dialogue as I think that it limited our acting a bit which is why this was probably the least appealing aspect of the video.
  • 43. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 12 Thanks to all of the constructive criticism I was able to improve my work to a point where I was able to complete a greatly improved version of the video which had a much better atmosphere and was free from preventible errors. Something that surprised me was the amount of positive feedback that I got. Everyone I showed it to had something good to say whether it was the shots of the character staring at the painting, the choice of music or the action and makeup. Hearing what everyones had to say has given me a lot more confidence in what I’ve managed to make with so little resources. I think that next week I will try to improve the audio quality with the help of my brother as he has a lot of knowledge in this area and then I’ll move on to my evaluation of the project. I think that it’s crazy how even though all of these restrictions were placed on my I was able to make something that people still find entertaining and that a project that I thought would need several people acting and working in a crew only needed three people to make something that I can be proud of.
  • 45. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 13 This week I wanted to start and finish the first draft for my evaluation as I’ve now completed my production. I started the week by looking through all of my PowerPoints and my previous reflections and writing about how I felt during each stage of the project and what I did in each stage. This took quite a while as there was a lot of work to look through and summarise however I was happy with how it turned out in the evaluation and I think that putting the time in to do that was worth it. In my production slides of the evaluation I wrote about aesthetic and technical aspects of my production which included what I liked about these details as well as what I would’ve improved if I had more time or if I was filming under different circumstances. The Corona virus lockdown has massively affected my work so I think that it was important to write about what changes it made in my evaluation as if lockdown hadn’t happened then my project would likely look very different to how it does now. I’m happy with how I described each stage of production as well as the challenges I faced and issues I managed to overcome during production, I think that writing the evaluation has given me a chance to further reflect of the progress I’ve made in this project.
  • 46. REFLECTIVE JOURNAL WEEK 13 The next part of my evaluation was to talk about my time management as well as my audience appeal which were two things I had in mind throughout the project. I thought that I’d used planning effectively to have an efficient use of time throughout the project however I believe that my audience appeal could've been better suited to my older target audience if I had the necessary resources to create a more gruesome horror film. In the next stage of my evaluation I wrote down some feedback I got from peers when I showed them the first draft of my peers, I then took that feedback and made improvements to my video and now the video is on my website and I’ve wrote about the feedback to finish the evaluation. I found the feedback I received really helpful and surprising it seemed like they enjoyed the film so that's a success for me. I have completed the evaluation but I will send it to my tutor to get some feedback so I can make some improvements. I’m proud of the project I’ve managed to make despite the set backs and I think that I’ve learnt quite a lot about staying on track while facing difficulties.
