Evaluation Question 3
LUKE BURNIP
What could our product be used for?
I think that our product can be used for the cinema. It can be viewed at some kind of
independent cinema that would be willing to buy our product. The kind of
independent cinemas I am thinking about is the “ambassadors cinema” in Woking,
Surrey as it takes on a range of media to show.
Alternatively, I think that my project can be played at a film festival such as the BFI
London film festival. This is because the project can be showcased and could even
potentially be taken further.
The audience of our film would be able to see our film a lot more and it would be
easy for it to be accessible to lots more people.
Guildford Odeon
Guildford Odeon analysis
 There seems to be a mix of action and comedies in the viewings of the Guildford
Odeon cinema.
 There are some thrillers such as Star Wars and Silence but none of them are crime
thrillers meaning that if my film was showing, people who liked that sort of genre
would be more likely to watch it.
 The list of films show that the Cinema targets to families friendly movies, with their
major films being targeted at younger viewers.
 The type of audience that the cinema generally get are younger, PG-12 audiences
but they do show more mature films just not as frequently.
 The audience expects for a wide range of films to be played but generally family
films in the day that can be used for the whole family.
Ambassadors Cinema Woking
How does Woking compare to Guildford?
 Woking is a private cinema and therefor only has 6 screens whilst the big, national
cinema company, Odeon has a total of 10 screens in Guildford.
 Guildford is going to be able to show films more frequently but as for what they
were showing, the films were very similar and essentially appealed to the same
audience as thee Odeon does but just on a slightly smaller scale.
 With this size, it is shown that the audiences may favour the Odeon because it is
larger and may have just a tiny more amount of films being shown that are at less
of a risk of being booked up.
BFI Southbank
BFI analysis
 BFI are very different because they show films from a lot more genres and time
periods then cinemas like Odeon do.
 They do some new films but most of them are documentaries, they will be
showing one action thriller but that is the extent of their recent thriller films.
 There are a lot more old thrillers that they are planning on showing such as
Goodfellas and Taxidriver but these are older and more dated films.
 I can assume that the audience for this cinema would be more senior people who
enjoy watching older films and more factual, informative media.
Reading Film Theatre
Comparison
 From these I can deduce that the audiences for independent cinemas tend to like
less mainstream films, edging towards older classics.
 They don’t show any big blockbusters such as the films that Odeon bring out.
 This could be because the cinemas are independent and therefor aren’t able to
get new films because they are too expensive ect…
 Most independent cinemas are smaller and play different films to national cinemas
but they also branch out a lot to other media such as playing theatre productions
which means that it is able to target their very niche audience effectively.
BFI Film Festival
Cannes Film Festival
Film festival comparison
 I think that more relatable, real life films tend to win the most awards.
 I think this because a lot of the films that have won or are nominated for awards
tend to be dramas or events that could happen to normal people.
 That being said there are thrillers on there such as crime and psychological
thrillers because they are intriguing and people generally want to know what is
going to happen.
 Again, both film festivals appeal to different audiences but BFI has more of an
indie variety.
Crime thrillers that have been shown on
TV recently (channel 4)
Crime thrillers that have been shown on
TV recently (Film 4)
Crime thrillers that have been shown on
TV recently (Film 4)
 All of these films are shown at a time where a lot of younger people would be
asleep, this means that the it can’t be targeted at a range of people which is what
would be expected from films like these.
Where could my product be shown?
 I think that my product would be shown at late night on Film4. I think this because a lot of these
dark thrillers tend to be shown at a late time on these film channels.
 This would make the genre clearly defined and it as our product is not for younger viewers then
there wouldn’t be much of a chance of them watching it.
 This is a renowned TV channel and if it was shown on this it would be accessible for all of the UK
for many different types of audiences.
A Film Festival
 Because our product was made with no budget I think if we finished our product it could be
submitted into an indie film festival.
 It would be among other products in the same situation as us, giving it a chance to be showcased
well.
 It also gives us full creative control because we would not be tied town by anything that could
potentially happen if it was on a network.
 This is good as it targets at an audience that are expecting that kind of film so it would be honestly
received.
YouTube and free online streaming
 I think that if we put our product on a site such as youtube then it would be accessible for the
whole world to see.
 Therefor it could gain a lot more publicity because no one has to pay to see it.
 When it is on this medium it has potential to become popular and get noticed.
 This is a good way of getting a film noticed because lots of people can search for the specific genre
of film.
Independent Cinema
 I think that we could make our product available for independent cinemas to screen.
 This is because they show a wide variety of media forms so our crime thriller would fit right in.
 This would provide the product with an opportunity to be seen by a wide variety of people that go
to cinemas regularly or like the crime thriller genre.
 The audience would know and expect a low budget film because it being being showcased at an
independent cinema.
Final evaluation
 I think that if we put a lot of work into the final, full outcome of our sequence then
we could potentially submit it to an indie festival were it can be seen by many
people.
 This would include a lot of editing and filming of extra scenes.
 The final product would fit very well among the other thrillers that have been
submitted.
 I think that because there is increased accessibility to be able to view these
products, there is a demand for these types of projects
