2. DIFFERENT TYPES OF MEDIA
Cinema- The production of films as an art or industry or a theatre where films are shown for public
entertainment.
Television- A system for converting visual images with sound into electrical signals and displaying them
on a screen.
Film festival- An organised event at which many films are shown
3. CINEMA
My local cinema is the Odeon in Guildford. As can be seen, there is a plethora of different genres all aimed
towards the same age. The genres are action (assassin’s creed), fantasy (A monster calls) and drama
(collateral beauty). Most of these films are aimed at children-young teens, which tells me that this cinema is
mostly visited by children who are most likely to go with their parents. We can tell this by a lack of thriller
and horror films, which would be more popular among late teens and adults.
4. The films to the left all follow the same pattern of the last slide; all of them are different in their
genres but similar in their target audience. For instance, Fantastic Beasts is a 12A and so is
passengers. Not too many teens would want to watch this as they’d be much more interested
in the movies on the screenshot to the right, that have a higher age rating and are lower down
the page. The movies that are more likely to be visited are at the top of the page, the fantasy
or action movies for 8-12 year olds (or maybe even younger) that are typically accompanied by
some type of parent. The movies that are less family friendly rest at the bottom, with 15 age
ratings, they’re movies like ‘Why Him’ and ‘Silence’, the ones that have a smaller appeal to
smaller children that would visit with their families, earning the cinema more tickets.
5. The Woking ambassador’s cinema’s website works in the exact same way to the Odeon in
Guildford, with the movies that the cinema knows are going to sell tickets to whole
families at the top and the movies that are considered to be much more adult further
towards the bottom. The movies may be in a different order, but the two 15 rated movies
are right at the bottom still. Considering the fact that our movie is not only a thriller, but
is targeted towards 18-20 year olds, which would put it at the bottom of the page, where
it’s pretty much out of sight and will not sell as well as, say, Disney’s Moana despite being
shown in the same cinema.
6. This independent cinema mostly shows movies
that have a more mature genre, such as dramas
or thrillers. These movies are not only very
recent, but are not shown by Odeon or the
Ambassadors cinema in Woking, which makes it
very unique and rather appealing. The layout of
these pages are also very different to those on
the other cinemas, as there is no real order to
the films and where they are placed on this
page.
7. This cinema is more interested in showing the
higher quality films (in terms of ratings, for
example, Paterson has a 95% rating on rotten
tomatoes) than the earlier mentioned
cinemas. This cinema would be a point of
interest for movie goers that want the best
experience possible when watching a movie,
and the movies are aimed at an audience of
about 15 and older.
8. There are few films in this independent cinema, and again, it seems to as if the
films on display are for a much older audience. Much like the other
independent cinema, BFS has got not much order to the movies on the page
here.
9. The Cannes Film Festival is an annual film festival held in Cannes,
France, which previews new films of all genres from all around the
world. The list to the left shows some of the movies that were
shown at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. The audience stretches
internationally, so these movies come from everywhere around the
world. Showing our movie here would be again, a setback, as the
competition is breathtakingly vast.
10. This film festival is considerably smaller
when compared to Cannes film festival,
showing a total of 3 movies this year, which
would mean a much smaller audience. The
main genre between these three movies
seems to be drama. This would be a better
place to show our thriller as there is a lot less
competition. However, the audience is also
much smaller, so the awareness of the movie
that we need is much less likely to come
about
11. These are the thrillers throughout
the past few days. There are not
many thriller movies being shown
on TV recently, as Christmas has
just passed and There are more
family friendly Christmas movies
tan there are Christmas thriller
movies.
12. In the Odeon, there is large viewership
because of such a massive audience.
On the other hand, my research leads me
to believe that our movie will not be
publicised by Odeon very well, as this
brand of cinema prefers to sell tickets to
full families that want to see family friendly
movies. Thus, ticket sales would more than
likely got to those movies
ODEON INDEPENDENT CINEMAS
independent cinemas can attract the
proper target audience that we need. Less
famous directors are given a much larger
chance to shine, but these cinemas are
less famous than other larger cinemas
such as Odeon.
13. Cannes is an International film festival so more
people will attend, when put next to the much
smaller Edinburgh film festival. The massive
competition could backfire, as some people could be
more interested in the movies with the big names
rather than other movies with less established stars,
just like the Odeon cinema.
CANNES FILM FESTIVAL
Despite the much, much smaller
competition, the Edinburgh is still a risky
place to release a movie. Because the
audience is so small, the film’s going to
get very little exposure in the public eye.
EDINBURGH FILM FESTIVAL
14. International audience, so more
people are watching at home. There
is a chance for the movie to become
popular among the public due to
international viewing. There is a
possibility that people don’t watch
your film, as it would be much later
at night, due to it’s age rating.
TV
15. From my research, the one method where the advantages outweighed the
disadvantages was the TV option. It’s much easier to get to the wanted
target audience, which is 18-22 year olds. Television is much easier to
watch and requires much less effort that going to a cinema or a film
festival, whether or not it’s independent, global or international. TV
channels such as Film 4 offer a national audience and therefore, I think
that the best option to get our movies seen and known is through
television.
