MUSIC VIDEO ANAYLSIS
By Kareem lyew-sang
CREATURE-KSI
 I have done an analysis of the music video for KSI’s creature.
 The song belongs to the rap genre although this is of the rap genre the
imagery shown throughout the video is different from typical rap music
videos.
 The images focus more on representing K.S.I’s image. The imagery
focus on how K.S.I does not care about what other people think and his
new aspect on the world and people. It also focuses on how he feels
others have treated him in the past.
 In this particular music video there are no other media forms within the
video. As it focuses mainly on K.S.I performing and the landscape he is
in.
 The music video is more dependent on the music itself rather than the
music being dependent on the video. If you was to listen to the song by
itself you could tell by the lyrics what it is attempting to get across to
the audience. The video helps emphasis that through the animal
imagery and the shots of K.S.I in a straight jacket representing the idea
of K.S.I being seen as more of a creature than a person.
 The main themes are set up through the video are the idea of K.S.I
feeling isolated and pressured by other people. This can be seen in the
video with the use of long shots on K.S.I in exotic but isolated locations.
Also the used of dark lighting to show idea that he felt he was in a bad
place. The theme of K.S.I feeling that people treat him like more of a
creature that’s meant to just do as he is asked is show through shots
with him being rushed by the African tribe.
 Costumes are a key thing used in the music video to help portray the
image. For example in the video it shows K.S.I in a straight jacket which
helps portray the idea of K.S.I being treated like a creature. Also the use
of the tribal outfits on the kids makes als helps represent this idea as it
makes it seem as if they are a tribe hunting down a animal.
 The narrative being constructed is the idea that K.S.I is retaliating
against the people who treat him like a creature. You can see this in the
in the video with how K.S.I in the beginning is being seen sitting in a
straight jacket in a therapy session and then is shown in a cave
attempting to break out the jacket showing his retaliation. Also it shows
the idea of himpossible not being able to escape from those people
with the imagery of the tribe charging at him at the end showing the
boy about to decapitate him with a machete.
 The video constructs K.S.I’s new image of him being more aware of the
world and people and how they act and how the treatn you. Also that
he is no longer going to conform to what others want him to do and he
is now going to focuses on what he wants. This is shown through the
shots of K.S.I looking through the jungle.
FAME ON FIRE-BLACK BEATLES (ROCK
COVER)
 I doing a analysis of the music video for fame on fires cover of black
Beatles by Rae sremmurd.
 The original song is more hip hop rap but the fame on fire cover is rock
almost metal song.
 The music shows this through the use of performance in the video
which is usually a key focus in many rock music videos.
 The lyrics of this song mainly focus around the idea of making money
and the being rich and spending it big on having fun. Also talks about
people trying to reach where they have reached and people hating on
their success.
 This shown through the video through the camera going to through
the building of people frozen in positions that indicate they are
partying and having fun. While also having the band be making music
while the party goes on.
 The video and the music don’t have to much of a link for the majority
of the video as it it’s the camera moving through building. Until it gets
to the last chorus at 1:33 when it gets to the band and they come out
of their frozen position and start performing. The screen scrambles
whenever the beat drops.
 This video gives off the image of them being chill people who are ready
to party at times but their main focus is their music as shown in video
as while everyone else is partying they are performing and recording
their next song showing their dedication to their music.
 This video links to their previous videos as most of their videos always
show them performing against a plain background which a common
theme in their videos. For example in their video for their XO TOUR LIFE
cover.
 The artists theme selves in the video are sexualised in the video but
there is one point in the video where there are two women who shown
in a possibly sexual nature. At 0:43 the camera moves past a man taking
pictures of two women holding each other with the girl on the right
looking like she is about to move her in for a kiss. Their outfits also do
show a lot of skin which could give of a sexual image.
 The video references the mannequin challenge which was trend on
YouTube and vine where a group people would freeze like mannequins
in interesting ways. The song black Beatles was always played in the
background of these videos. Fame on fire have replicated this in their
video by doing their own version of the mannequin challenge.
 The music video I feel is more concept based through the idea being a
reference to what the original song was famous for. Although it does
have a bit of narrative as you could say that their mannequin challenge
has a story hidden in it.
YELLOW CLAW- CITY ON LOCKDOWN
 I have done an analysis for the music video for city on lockdown by
yellow claw featuring juicy J and Lil Debbie. The song belongs to the
edm genre although does feature rap as well.
 This is shown throughout video with the common theme of partying
and going wild and letting loose which is frequently shown in edm style
music videos.
 The lyrics o the song are amplified by the activities happening in the
video. For example the main lyric which is repeated in the chorus “we
have the city on lockdown” is said with images in the video of the
artists going around the city doing large amount of things from doing
doughnuts in a car to playing games in a arcade. Also we don’t see any
other people apart from the main people roaming around the city in
the video.
 The video does show a relationship between the music and the way the
video is made. It cuts to the beat of the music for example when it gets
to the chorus the and the base kicks in the video cuts dramatically. The
pace of the video picks up every in it gets to the beat drop.
 The artists in the video are shown as giving of a I don’t care we have
control attitude. As it shows them doing acts that some may consider
outlandish but show no sign of caring. Also there are shots of them
giving the middle finger to the screen further solidifying the we don’t
care attitude. This is different than some of there other videos as they
are usually shown preforming in front of crowds and at concerts
focusing on their care for music.
 The female artist Lil Debbie is shown in a sexual manner but it’s more in
the way of her showing of her looks rather than it being for people to
see and lust over. You can see how lil Debbie is shown sexually when
she is seen twerking and also shots focusing on her butt. The clothing
she wears in the video also shows a more sexual nature although not
revealing her clothes are very tight fitting and put emphasis on her
butt. Also one of the guys from yellow claw is also slightly sexualised as
he is seen with his shirt of for the majority of the video.
 The music video does reference other texts in the juicy j section of the
video. This section is animated in the style of the simpsons. If this links
in with the I don’t care we don what we want attitude of the video. This
section seems very random but they don’t care what others think so
they did it anyway as way of reinforcing this idea.
 The music video is a mixture of both performance and concept as it
shows lil Debbie rapping and juicy j but also showing of the idea of the
video of we don’t care we do what we want attitude.
