1. Evaluation Question 3
Nina Hochtritt
• YouTube
I think that YouTube is quite a good way to distribute new films or newcomer
products because you can upload films produced with a lower budget. Also could
the trailer or the opening sequence play in the adverts before the actual video.
What kind of media institution
might distribute your Media Product
and why?
2. Other ways
• Cinema
The cinema is a unrealistic way to distribute a newcomer film with a low
budget. But also the trailer could play in the adverts before the actual film.
• Film fairs
In film fairs are a lot of newcomer products as an intro for another film or as
a help to publish a new product. I think that this is a step further on in the
way up but it is possible if you for example know someone who works in this
industry.
• TV
The TV is one of the most common ways to distribute new films. Trailers play
in an advert or you see a logo what could make curious on what this may
belong to.
3. Local Odeon- What’s on?
The most common genre is definitely Drama
with 71% of the films. I assume this occurs
because people want to find an either
perfect life or want to escape from their lives
where they may have problems. In Dramas
often ends everything good for the
protagonists and the characters have their
“Happy Ever After”.
These screenshots show the
current program of the local
odeon.
4. My Genre?
• Our opening sequence is a psychological thriller. In
our Odeon is in the moment not 1 Thriller currently
on screen.
• Maybe the time are for people a bit more difficult
and they don’t want to see a world where everything
is more creepy than it already is.
5. Woking Cinema?
There are differences in the
cinema programme what
could be because there live
more children in Woking or
in general are the people
there more interested in
films which could also be
watched by children.
Though Woking plays with
Spectre one thriller.
Obviously is the audience a
bit more multifaceted.
These screenshots show the
current films in the Woking
cinema.
6. Results
• I think that the differences comes from the
different population who live in the different
areas.
• Also could the cinema in Woking be bigger so
there are more screens that they are able to
show more and different films to the same
time.
7. Independent BFI
These screenshots show the programme of the BFI. It includes mainly dramas and
action films. Only “The 5th wave” is a thriller. This is again not my genre but at least is
there one film. I guess that is because the audience may not want to see films which
are so close to the audience and focus on the stage of mind.
8. Independent Cinema Reading
The independent cinema in
Reading shows in January 6 films
where all of them are Drama films
but “Bridge of spies” is also a
thriller. This shows that the target
audience probably just want to
escape from reality. I assume that
a lot of people want to see happy
ends in the films. MacBeth is a
tragedy but a lot of people know
what happens in this historical
play. I think that the audience in
this cinema are predominantly
female and middle class.
This picture shows the films
on screen in the IC in Reading.
9. Independent Cinema
British Museum
In this cinema is usually only 1 film shown.
Therefore the cinema has only one screen and
must be quite small. I guess that this is not a
normal cinema and that they only show films what
are too small to be on screen in the big cinemas.
Further shows this cinemas a documentation and
a Christmas special. This says about the TA that
they are probably a bit older. Teenager are mainly
not interested in documentations.
These
screenshots show
the current
program in the IC
of the British
Museum.
10. Results
• The programme is not too different to the
Odeon Cinemas because everywhere are a lot
of dramas shown.
• But while Odeon and the British Museum
have no thriller in their programme is in
Reading currently one thriller on screen
• To sum up is the programme different but the
most prevalent genre is the same (Drama)
11. Oscars
This is a summary of the most winning Oscar films. The most common
genre to get Oscars seems to be “Drama” and “Romantic”. That tells me
that these genres are more successful than thrillers and more people
are going to see a romance in the cinema or in the TV than a thriller.
This photo shows
the films with the
most Oscars.
12. Golden Globes
TV series
The most awards were won by films from the drama genre.
Dramas can be interesting and maybe some people love to
watch them. Maybe they are more likely to win prices because
thrillers are quite weird and not everybody wants to see that on
the screen.
This photo shows the films with
the most Oscars.
13. Venice International Film Festival
In the Venice international film
festival are mainly dramas and only
“Miss Violence” and “Tom at the
farm” are thrillers. “Tom at the
farm” is a psychological thriller what
is the genre of my opening sequence.
But still are a lot of dramas in the list.
Maybe a lot of people love dramas
also because they are quite close to
the people but are not really weird
so actually you could say that they
want to identify with these films. This photo shows the films
primed at the VI film festival
14. Conclusion
• I think that you can see very clearly that the
most common genres that wins prices are
“Drama” and “Romantic” I think this occurs
through the need of people to escape from
reality and find film characters who have their
happy ever after. Especially teenagers are
sometimes desperate to see a romance.
18. Where could our film been shown?
Independent cinema vs. Odeon?
• I think that a film with a lower budget and not
professional actors or a director would rather be
published in an independent cinema. The
programme is not that mainstream as it is in the
Odeon
• On the other hand might the audience in the
independent cinema not be the target audience
for our film what wouldn’t be the problem in the
Odeon. I think that there are just more people
who go into the Odeon than in an independent
cinema.
19. BBC vs. Film 4
• I think that BBC wouldn’t be a bad idea
because they have in general a lower budget.
• Film 4 shows more adverts and it would be
more the genre what Film 4 plays
• But I think that it is more possible that the film
might be played on BBC. Also is the audience
of BBC more interested in thrillers what you
can see in series like “Silent Witness”
20. Forums online?
• Forums online can be a clever way to
distribute your product. I think it would be a
good idea because everybody can upload his
work and for some you don’t even have to
pay. Also is it a good idea because everybody
can see your product.
21. Young filmmakers
competition
• The young filmmaker competition is a good
way to show other people your product and
also to see what other young people have for
ideas. My research has shown that short clips
of these films can be shown in cinemas and I
think it is a really good idea to distribute your
media product in that way
22. YouTube
• YouTube is probably the easiest way to
promote and distribute a new film even when
it is just from newcomers.
• E.g. when before the actual video is a spot
from a new trailer or something like adverting
the spot before different videos than maybe
someone sees it and likes it.
23. Most possible idea of distribution
Young film maker competitions
• I really think that you can achieve a lot over
these competitions because it is not too stuck-up
to take part and if someone important sees your
film and likes it you took a big step forward
YouTube
• YouTube is the easy way to promote things but I
am not sure that they really can do a lot more
than that. But our project has on YouTube already
155 views and 5 likes. I think that this is a big
achievement
