1. Results Report
Having looked at my results, it is evident that the action conventions appeal to the target
audience more than anything. It was less likely however, that the target audience were
interested in the Rom-Com conventions and fantasy conventions within the film. The action
aspects of the filmwould have appealed more to the target audience as the target audience
is mainly older fans of the film who would have been very used to seeing action
conventions, also having more action and Sci-Fi conventions within the older films indicates
more of an interest in them. The target audience would also have found that things like the
Millennium Falcone being used in the film and the reappearance of Han Solo on the
Millennium Falcone to be extremely exciting and would appeal to the target audience There
are many aspects of the trailer that would appeal to the target audience. For example, the
older characters in the film would almost certainly appeal to the target audience as the
target audience is mainly older fans and children. The older Characters would appeal to the
older fans because there is a sense of familiarity for them and they would also be very
excited to find out what happens to these characters. A good example of this would be
when we see Luke Skywalker and R2-D2. Another good example of this is when Han-Solo
and Princess Leia hug each other. This would have excited fans as it would leave them
wondering what is causing them to hug and would remind them of the older Star Wars fans,
appeasing them. Explosions within the trailer that are seen very regularly would also more
than likely appease the younger fans. This is because explosions are an action convention.
This appeals more to a younger audience. This was very evident in my survey.
There are many aspects of the trailer that would influence the target audience to watch the
film. For example, the comeback of the Millennium Falcon, this would be very intriguing for
older fans and would make them want to watch the filmmore due to the fact that this has
always been such an iconic spaceship within Star Wars and many Star Wars fans wondered
whether or not they would ever see this in a new Star Wars film. Therefore, it would entice
the target audience of older fans to watch this as they want to see what happened to the
Space ship and will remind them of the old Star Wars films, giving a real sense of nostalgia.
Another aspect of the trailer that may influence the target audience to watch the film is the
explosion right in front of Fin and Rey. This is a huge action convention within the filmand
afterwards we can see Rey and Fin looking very perplexed and shocked. Here, we know that
something bad must have happened. This would entice the younger target audience to
watch the filmas it would intrigue them as to what had happened and wonder how they
were going to fix the problem. At the end of the trailer, we are also told that the filmis
going to be shown in IMAX. This would me more appealing to the younger target audience
fans as this is something that they are more used to as they have grown up with. The older
target audience, however, this would not appeal to as much as they would be so used to
seeing it in the cinema normally. They would also more than likely like to have a hard copy
of the film as well, the fact that they would have more flexibility spending power wise would
mean that they were able to do this.

4. Other questions that I asked included:
How old are you?
What is your gender?
What is it about the filmthat appeals to you?

all rolled into one with a cool loveable rogue space cowboy hero and princess love story,
what not to like, all the genres in the movie.”
5. “It’s the next instalment to an amazing series that allows us to see where the characters are
in the future”
“There is a strong female character.”
How many Star Wars films have you seen?
Survey Findings
Within my Survey I found that most of the people that answered it were in the age range of
16-25, very closely followed by 36 year olds plus. This is not too surprising in that many 36
year olds plus responded as this is very much who Star Wars tends to appeal to as they
would have more than likely seen the film when it first came out and are more likely to have
watched more Star Wars films, which is proven in my survey as more older people have
watched more Star Wars films than younger people have. All of the males within the
responses said that the male characters were their favourite characters, this shows a strong
sense of personal identity. Within the responses most of the females said that their
favourite character is Rey, showing a strong sense of personal identity. Within the Male
responses that i got there was a very mixed opinion on what conventions they liked most
about the film with some saying Action, and Rom-com and another saying the action
conventions .Most females also said that they prefer either the action conventions or Sci-fi
conventions within the film with only one saying something different which was the Rom-
com conventions within the film. Stereotypically this would be seen as quite unusual as
stereotypically it would be thought that a man would be less likely to like the Rom-com and
a woman would be more likely to say it. Stereotypically, it would be seen far less likely that a
woman would say that the action conventions were her favourite conventions within the
film. Generally, it tended to be the case that most men and women would pay the same
amount to go to the cinema, with most saying that they would spend somewhere within the
region of £11.00-£20.00. However, it did seem that it would be the 36 year olds plus that
would be the ones that would be spending more on merchandise and toys. This may be
because they have a larger income than the younger people.
