Measures of Dispersion and Variability: Range, QD, AD and SD
Question 3
1. What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?
2. There are three main institutions that could potentially
distribute my product. Firstly the cinema which is the most
popular place to go and view a film. Secondly TV which is also
know for showing films. it is cheaper than the cinema and
more widely available for the masses. Thirdly film festivals
which can show off films to larger institutions which can make
a film quite popular.
3. The most common genre of film at the
Odeon at the moment is fantasy/ sci-fi with
the action sub genre which are generally the
most popular films as well due to the
modern era and the majority of the
populous wanting fast paced films with lots
of action as they see that to be the best film.
This means that at this time of year the
Odeon would be very unlikely to show our
film as our genres do not align with the
current films showing
4. Our film is in the thriller/crime
genre which is not on as much in
the Odeon because it wouldn’t
make them as much money as it
isn’t the most popular genre with
people favouring sci-fi and
fantasy.
5. Ambassador is showing more PG/U
(children friendly films) along with
some more popular fantasy/ sci-fi
films just like the Odeon before.
This again means that our film
would be unlikely to be shown at
this cinema as well due to the
different genre types but also the
BBFC ratings that they have placed
on each of the films favouring more
children more than young adults.
The ambassador cinema is based in
Woking while the Odeon is in
Guildford. This can explain why
there are more children friendly
films in the ambassador. Woking
has more primary schools and
nurseries meaning that there are
more likely to be a younger
population than Guildford so their
films are more available to the
younger audience so they can get
more customers.
6. Vue is another mainstream cinema
which is also showing mainly sci-
fi/ fantasy films and like the
Odeon. It would be very unlikely for
my film to be shown here due to it
only showing the popular sci-fi and
fantasy genre, not the thriller or
crime genre which our film is. Vue
has the most amount of screens in
comparison to the Odeon and the
ambassador so have more
showings of their films, but do not
often have smaller low budget films
which wont have a mainstream
audience. However there is the
occasion that they do this. This
means the out of the 3 mainstream
cinemas in my local area Vue would
be the most likely cinema to show
it. But a cinema would still be very
unlikely to show our film.
7. The Commodore cinema
in ryde shows either
fantasy and sci-fi or
drama as the main films
being shown. It would be
unlikely for my film to be
shown here but it would
have a greater chance
than mainstream cinemas
like the Odeon and
ambassador due to this
being one of the only
cinemas on the isle of
Wight so it is more
isolated and people have
less option to go to other
cinemas.
8. The Electric cinema in
London is only showing
one film at the moment
which is a sci-fi/action
film. Although it does not
fit our genre, my film
could have a chance at
being show here due to the
lack of films being shown.
It may not be popular but
could be distributed quite
easily.
9. BFI film festival involves new
films being shown in cinemas
across London which can
lead to awards and film
creators being picked up by
larger film making
companies to then work on
their future products.
Films that are most likely going to win awards here are
horrors/ thrillers meaning that these are often most popular
to the audiences watching them. This suggests that my film
would have the best chance if were to be shown here due to
the popularity of the genre in previous years.
10. Sundance is another film festival which
involves film creators submitting films
which are then judged and chosen to
be shown at selected cinemas across
America. This is really good for film
creators trying to get into their
business and their name to be heard.
This would be another good
opportunity for a new film like mine to
be shown and distributed well.
The most films shown at
Sundance is documentaries and
thriller films. it old classics are
also shown as they aren't shown
in mainstream cinemas anymore.
my film is also in the thriller
genre which means that this
would be one of the more popular
11. Cannes film festival is an
international film festival which
happens every year. The most
popular films to be shown at this
event are documentaries and
horror/ thriller films. This means
that our film would most likely be
well received if it was shown at
Cannes because of the popular
genre. This also means that it could
be picked to be shown there. I
would say that BFI and Sundance
would be more likely to show my
film than Cannes as they are British
festivals which are more likely to
show British films.
12. Film 4 is a Tv channel
which is owned by
channel 4. This channel
shows several films a
day. The channel shows
a couple of popular
mainstream films each
day along side more
independent less well
known films. The thriller
genre is quite often
shown along with the
crime genre. This means
that because our film
shares a similar popular
genre our film could
potentially be shown,
although this is still
unlikely when compared
to the film festivals.
13. BBC have multiple channels which
can show films. BBC 3 is no longer
on TV but is now online for
streaming purposes. If BBC were to
show a film like ours then it would
be on BBC3. Crime and thriller
dramas are very popular on BBC
iplayer. BBC often shown less
known independent films because
it is cheaper to get the licensing.
However they normally get films
that have already been shown at
film festivals and in the cinema so
it would be unlikely that our film is
shown here.
14. Mainstream Independent
Yes-our film has a popular genre
which is often shown a the
mainstream cinema. Our film can
appeal to a large audience
because it is aimed at mid teens
to young adult.
Yes-can attract the target
audience that we are aiming our
film at (niche market)several lesser
known films have previously
shown in independent cinemas.
No-films shown in mainstream
cinemas like the Odeon are high
budget from well known
companies. The cinema needs to
guarantee the investment and
profit
No-less people will visit these
cinemas so it wont reach the same
amount of people as the
mainstream cinema. Because of
the niche market these cinemas
have to be very selective about the
films they pick to show.
15. BFI Cannes
Yes-Our film has the same genre
as the most popular films shown
each year. Has a wide built
audience that want to watch this
genre of film
Yes-more people would watch this
because it is international so the
film could be popular because of
this viewing base. Popular genre
but not most popular.
No-even is film is picked not
guaranteed that people will watch
the film.
No-films typically shown here
have a much higher budget then
ours. Not the most popular genres
there.
16. BBC Film 4
Yes-shares similar popular genre
as films that have been shown
recently.
Yes- Film 4 give opportunity to
many new independent film
creators. Reaches a wide audience
range for our film
No-films picked to be shown
normally already shown in other
places first before TV
No- not guaranteed for people to
watch it. Not the most popular
genre shown here. Most people
who watch films here watch the
mainstream films that they show
17. After looking at all the different institutions, I believe that the
best place for our film to be distributed would be through a
film festival like Sundance or BFI. This is because of the
audience is similar, young adults who would watch the crime
thriller genre which is most popular at these festivals. Because
of this there would be a possibility that our film is well
received by the audience watching it.
