2. Who would distribute our film?
There are many potential media institutions that could possibly distribute our
film. The most popular and well known possibility is the Odeon however,
because our film is in the ‘niche’ market, it is extremely unlikely for our
psychological thriller movie to earn the rights to be distributed in this mass
cinema. This is very evident because we are an amateur production with little
experience. We also don’t have any well known, popular or famous actors
starring in our film as we have a very low budget. This means that it wouldn’t
be able to compete with the top films on in the cinema today. Another
option for distribution would be at the film festival. This is because film
festivals present newly released student media opening sequences. An
example would be the surrey film festival. A more popular and bigger film
festival would show more well known films because of its prestige. Lastly,
another media institution that would distribute our film would be on the
television. This is because this is another popular way of watching media, film
and TV shows. However, this is highly unlikely because our film has a very low
budget and it wouldn’t be as popular as other films because we don’t have
any professional actors starring in it.

• The films in the previous slides are the top 3 best and most popular films
showing in the Guildford Odeon today. The genre’s of these 3 films are
different and don’t match with the genre of our film which is a
psychological thriller. The iconic new Star wars movie has a genre of sci-fi
fantasy. This film has a target audience of all ages for example it attracts
children, teenagers and adults. This is a franchise that has been going on
for a very long time therefore this is a massive reason why this is a
prevalent genre. This differs to our film because of the genre and we
haven’t got sequels to our movie which would make it more popular. The
Revenant has a genre of Drama with a sub genre of adventure. This film
can attract a mass audience as it is based on true events. This differs to our
film ‘THE LAST TASK’ as it not a true story. Lastly, Ride along 2 is a comedy
action film which is quite similar to our film because it has elements of
action. This also very different because it is also a comedy film and our film
is very serious. Overall the sci-fi fantasy genre is prevalent as Star wars is a
massive film that has been going on for a very long time therefore it is a
franchise. As it has been going on for a very long time it has gained a mass
audience. To conclude all genres vary at the Guildford Odeon and all top 3
films had a different genre to our production.

which shows that Thriller movies are not popular

• The Independent Cinema such as the BFI is very different compared
to the Guildford Odeon. This is evident because the actors,
directors and production value participating in the films are less
popular and not well-known, therefore this creates a more ‘niche’
audience. This means that people are attending these amateur
productions which will help them noticed and gain publicity. The
productions consist of new films that are not very popular and
well-known. It also presents re-releases of older films to attract
more people to the cinema. There are a variety of genres which
range from Horror to Historical however there are no Sci-Fi
Fantasy films showing at these local cinemas. This is because
smaller businesses will have a much lower budget compared to
bigger ones. therefore they will be unable to create visual effects.
Because of this, Independent Cinemas are forced to show many
more fiction and historical films.

• A film festival is an event at which multiple films are screened for participants.
Typically, film festivals are accompanied by panels which may feature
directors, cast members, and other film personnel, and awards may be offered
at the close of the festival to films of particularly high quality. In other words a
film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more
cinemas or screening venues. An example of a historical festival is the BFI
which is located in London Southbank. The BFI independent cinema is a four-
screen cinema venue showing over 2,000 classic and contemporary films each
year. The BFI film of the year award went to a movie in the comedy genre.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t match and fit in with the genre of our film which
was a psychological thriller. This shows that this isn’t the prevalent genre of
2015 in this independent Cinema. However, the top 3 genres at this festival
were Thriller, Comedy and historical. This tells us a lot about the audiences. It
portrays that this festival’s main attraction are mature audience. BFI has a
variety of different films and genres that also showcase very well known and
popular actors which is another reason why it is very successful.

• Independent cinema vs. Odeon
• I think that a film with a lower budget and no professional
actors or a director would rather be published in an
independent cinema. The programme is not that
mainstream as it is in the Odeon.
• On the other hand, the audience in the independent cinema
might not be the target audience for our film. This
wouldn’t be the problem in the Odeon. I think that there
are just more people who go into the Odeon than in an
independent cinema.

• Forums online is a clever way to distribute
your product. I think it would be a good idea
because everybody can upload their work
and its completely free. Also is it a good idea
because everybody can see and access your
product without them having to pay.

• The young filmmaker competition is a good
way to show other people your product and
also to see what other young people have
for ideas. My research has shown that short
clips of these films can be shown in cinemas
and I think it is a really good idea to
distribute your media product in that way.

• YouTube is probably the easiest way to promote and
distribute a new film even when it is just from newcomers.
In conclusion I believe our film would be shown on YouTube
for many different reasons. This is because our film doesn’t
have any prestigious directors or actors therefore it is less
appealing than the films shown in the Odeon. We also have
a low budget therefore we can’t fully compete with the
movies shown in the Odeon or theatres.
