2. What is screening at the Guildford
Odeon?
From previously viewing what is currently showing at our local
Odeon, I can understand that my genre type is not very popular in
the late January of 2016. From my screenshot taken from the
Odeon’s latest releases I can gather that there is a variety of
genres, from romances to action to comedy.
The likelihood of my film finding its audience is low, gathering that
hardly any thrillers are being shown throughout this time of year, I
believe many factors contribute to this. Films can be released
during a particular time period, for example romances are being
released due to the event of Valentines day approaching us,
making this genre very popular to a wide audience range. On
another hand, comedy’s are very popular due to the ‘January
blue’s’ people are not wanting to be scared or on the edge of their
seats. They want something funny to get them through the month
that everybody dreads.
It is unlikely that big chain cinemas, like the Odeon will show my
small indie film at the moment, due to the genre and nature of the
film. Like I previously explained people aren’t into this genre at
this time of year. Also, these companies are looking for
blockbusters, where as mine is just an individual film.
3. Film Festival- Portobello film festival
Independent film festivals are demonstrated all around the world, like
shown here, London’s Portobello film festival also participates in these
events; showing that these indie film screenings are very popular and
wanted. Similar films to mine have been showed at this film festival,
they have also won awards and have gone up since being in connections
to this festival. They promote this festival through social media sites
like Facebook, this is a good way of spreading the event as small
independent film makers like myself can easily access the needed
information about the upcoming festival.
This may not distribute my film as leading popular festivals like these may
over look my personal indie film due to judges and critics who carry such
high expectations in this industry.
4. Film Festival- Sundance
After researching into film festivals around the UK, I
discovered Sundance festival. The genres of these are
mostly a variety from being based around thriller, comedy,
action and romance. Sundance is a very popular film
festival, due to the range of genres they show, like the
screenshot demonstrated below I can therefore see that
my film may have potential, there are a lot of thrillers
meaning thrillers may be their department. Due to the
nature of the genres, my film may find its target
audience, Although because of my film being an
independent indie film, it may not fit in with the talent;
Hollywood dominance may take over my film meaning it
does not go any further than this film festival, or could be
overwritten due to the other powerful films.
5. Independent cinemas -BFI London
After analysing the genres, I understand that independent
cinemas are a lot different to major cinemas, due to the
fact that they show a variety of genres, creating a wider
audience; in comparison to bigger cinema companies they
are so major that they have a very limited genre range.
BFI London, may screen my film as they show independent
films that aren’t Oscar award winning performances, which
mine happens to be. Therefore they show more indie films
with varieties of genres, consequently giving me more of a
chance to have my film shown through this company,
6. Independent cinemas -Reading Film Fest
After looking further, I discovered ‘Reading Film
Fest” again like BFI this is another independent
cinema, showing indie films. They show a range of
genres, the one below is a very common genre. “You
See Me is a brave, inspiring and empowering film
that documents the essence of the human
condition.” (See screenshot below)
Audiences for independent film companies like
Reading film fest mostly consist of varied genres,
meaning audiences receive enhanced experiences of
different genre types; providing audiences with
opportunities to develop knowledge and better
understandings of different film genres.
This tells me that big cinema companies like Odeon
like to limit their film choice, meaning they keep
existing audiences. This means they only provide
entertainment for only a small group of people,
interested in that genre always being shown.
7. Thriller genre on TV
These three thriller films are all
from Film4 schedule of films being
shown, thrillers are very popular on
this channel therefore showing that
more people enjoy thriller movies.
8. Odeon cinema VS. Independent
The Odeon cinema is well known cinema, but unfortunately
this media institution will not produce my indie film as its
more low budget and mainstream. On the other hand,
independent cinemas such as BFI London may consider
showing my film as its more mainstream and indie.
9. Sundance VS. BFI
I believe that my independent film would be more likely to be shown at
Sundance, because they show a lot of independent films with a lot of
different genres, including mine. Thrillers are quite popular in this festival,
possibly due to the audiences therefore meaning my film is more likely to be
shown in comparison to BFI.
On the other hand, BFI are more Hollywood ‘esk’ meaning they don’t consider
more independent films, if mine was shown it would possibly be lost in the
competition, meaning my film would not grow or develop within the film
industry.
10. BBC VS. Film4
The BBC shows are more friendly and family orientated meaning thrillers like
mine, will not be shown on this channel. On the other hand, after research I
found that Film4 are more likely to show thrillers. My film may have potential
to be shown on here as it fits in with the conventions of the program.
Film4 will especially show these in the evening, whereas the BBC stick to
more of a schedule due to various soaps being on around that time.
11. Overall… I believe
Overall, I believe my film would be the best it
possibly could be through the use of Youtube, here I
can post it freely and openly to the public and
receive feedback, this enables me to develop on my
film and make improvements ready for it to develop
into the film industry and have more of a possibility
growing further.
Youtube is also a good source of presentation as you
get noticed by potential film makers, enabling good
publicity and a variety of opinions. Also, this site is a
good way of connecting and viewing; people from all
countries can see and judge my film.
