Hughes s The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain (1926)
The article The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain by Hughes (1926), the author shows a situation
that the African Americans felt underestimated for being black and attempted to embrace whites
culture. This was because white people looked down on them during that era. He shows this by
expressing his disappointment with a statement made by one of the most promising of the young
Negro poets who says that, I want to be a poet not a Negro poet, meaning behind that, I want to be
white. (Par 1) He wanted to be white so that his artwork would be better accepted. Not only this young
Negro wanted to be white for him to be uplifted in the society, but also some other black people
wanted to be white as well for them to be estimated and respected.
According to Hughes, this statement of denying being black was the mountain standing in the way of
any true Negro art in America this urge within the race towards whiteness, the desire to pour racial
individuality into the mold of American standardization, and to be a little Negro and as much
American as possible. (Hughes, Para. 1). This wants to tell us how many blacks artists, felt it was
necessary to be white in order for themselves and their work to be accepted and recognized.
Hughes also talks about the state of the African American families of that period. In his second
paragraph, he says that, Negro middle

Fensive Realist, John Mearsheimer, A Man Many Ir Majors...
Two authors agree, and one, the offensive realist John Mearsheimer, a man many IR majors and
theorists have grown to know and love, continues to maintain his position. Mearsheimer s next book
should be called, Mutually Assured Destruction by John Mearsheimer. His Offensive Realist
perspective creates a gloomy forecast that he wishes to refute for the Chinese American great power
debate. With this book being published in 2001 and the most updated copy in April 2014, it is
probably very interesting to read the first edition of this book in comparison to the most update
version. However that being said Mearsheimer s initial arguments of the chapter assigned, has proven
to be true. Recently assigned, was an article on the current situation in the South China Sea. An
imperative region specifically for the U.S and home to one of the busiest shipping lanes in the World,
Mearsheimer discusses in depth the Chinese position in this region. Mearsheimer gives an extensive
synopsis of his core elements of IR theory, but his main argument which all three theorists seem to
agree on is the American resemblance of China s geo political strategy. While Ikenberry and Glaser,
focus on international diplomacy that must be taken to prevent major war and the dismal likelihood of
a great power war between these to powers. As more knowledge is gained on this topic, it is extremely
difficult, as a student to truly understand what will actually happen in the future for China and the
United States.

The Importance Of Censorship Content On The Internet
With the rise of the Internet, it has given everyone opportunities to stay better connected in the world
today and to be entertained. This has led to the creation of sites like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter,
Reddit, Google, and so many more. A lot of big companies have implemented the internet, making
them more successful and giving them a wider reach for business. With all this freedom, however, this
leads to inappropriate content being on the internet as well. There is an abundance of violent and
sexual content on the internet just like with older media, like movies and music. The difference is that
this unsuitable content is more accessible than before the invention of the internet. This has caused
discussion about whether or not the internet should be censored, and if so, to what extent. While it is
understandable why people do not want inappropriate content around them in a more accessible way,
allowing the bad content lets the good content be just as accessible as well. The Internet should not be
censored for violent and sexual content because this silences voices that have the right to be heard and
slows creativity and originality in art and entertainment. Additionally, silencing freedom of speech
takes voices away from the people and gives it to the richest and powerful.
Censoring the Internet would be taking away freedom of speech for the average internet user. The
largest internet censorship system is in China, which censors anything harmless to the Chinese

Canadian Mining Effects
Within todays society there are many things that are swept under the rug and are not acknowledged.
The Canadian mining industries may not affect Canadian citizens, however, the affects that Canadian
Mining causes is a major issue in many areas of the world. The effects of Canadian mining vary from
direct effect on the work environment, serious environment harm as well as the effects on the people
of the land. Lives are at risk and being taken daily by Canadian mining in south America, however the
awareness that it should have has not been acknowledged.
Grahame Russell who is the director of Rights Action gives insight on how people are being treated
and affected by the mining being done to their land. Certain areas that have been affected by Canadian
Mining industries are Guatemala and Honduras, the people their have be exposed to poverty, illnesses,
pollution, racism towards the poor, government repression, not enough work and many other aspects.
The corrupt government of these countries turn a blind eye to their people, the Canadian government

Why Some UK Companies are Reluctant to Invest in Training...
Explain why some UK companies are reluctant to invest in training and development. Do you
consider these reasons to be valid?
The rapid development of technology and in other areas have led companies ability to replicate
products more easily, and the rapidly expansion of the service sector has led the nature of consumers
to demand high quality at the lowest prices. Both of these highlight the importance of gaining the
competitive advantage through the labour force. A method through which a company could obtain this
edge, is through training and development of their various skills. Its implementation and management
concerns many concepts, esoteric and thus hard to emulate. Training and development can have many
benefits ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Training was also seen to enhance job motivation under certain conditions: there was a practical use to
the training and this had been clearly depicted to them (Heyes, Stuart).
Alternatives to T D are to poach employees from other rivals, or acquire employees through the
expensive recruitment and selection process who has the requisite skills required premium must be
paid.
The former is a large barrier to the T D initiative as the benefits accrue to the company and the
employee. The rival can potentially poach your trained employees. This is known as the Prisoner s
Dilemma, due to which many companies in the UK do not invest in human resource development
(Sisson, Storey). The use of temporary or outsourced employees will not only be harder to train as
they may deemed unworthy of investment due to their movement ability, they may be not able to
provide the high quality service. Though companies outsourcing their call centres seem to be
providing them the necessary service. But these operators in India cannot replicate the highly
customer orientated service that British call centres can provide i.e. speaking to Yorkshire people in
their own dialects this would require training. Employees are going to become trained whether the
initiative is taken or not as with time they will gain tacit knowledge and they will pick things up by
sitting next to Nellie over time. This is very inefficient, and a focused

Sexism In The Help
In a sexism stricken society there are drawbacks that affect women every day of their lives. According
to men, about 56% of them think sexism is no longer an issue (Source). Today, sexism is still a threat
to women of all over the world. Kathryn Stockett, the author of The Help, addresses sexism to make
the time period genuine to the reader. The sexism in Stockett s book is brought forth indirectly.
Stockett uses two of her main protagonists as an example on how sexism affects women and the roles
they are supposed to play. Sexism is a practice that is detrimental to women, entices violence, and
creates a social barrier between the sexes.
To begin with, women often find themselves in adverse situations that they have no control over.
Skeeter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Comparing today s society to the society in The Help, jobs were only offered to women who fit the
look of a petite, feminine woman and nowadays people are hired for the amount of experience they
had. Stockett emphasizes the gender barrier many women experience during the time period she
depicts in her book. In the beginning chapters when Miss. Skeeter is looking for a job she encounters
a, squat, single column under HELP WANTED: FEMALE (Stockett 68), in the daily paper implying
there is a limit of jobs that women can work. Most of them happened to be secretary positions. This is
not only hurtful to women who do not fit the conventional stereotype of a woman, but to women who
want to change their world even if it means baby steps. Men are always offered, at least four columns
filled with bank managers, accountants, loan officers, cotton collate operators. On this page, Percy
Gray, LP, is offering Jr. Stenographers fifty more cents an hour (Stockett 69), additionally adding to
the notion that men have more job opportunities and make more money. The way that sexism plays its
role in society make it seem like there is no way of overcoming this obstacle faced by women.
Breaking the large social boundary that women should play house while the men watch television is
happening in real life in today s time. All thing considered, women today are being more than a simple
housewife, they are

Trial By Fire Did Daxas Execute An Innocent Man By David...
In David Grann s Trial by Fire: Did Texas Execute an Innocent Man? , published on September 7,
2009, the overall question addressed is whether we should keep the death penalty legal. Grann begins
his argument with his account of the events that occurred on the morning of December 23, 1991 in
Corsicana, Texas. Cameron Todd Willingham, the husband and father of three children awakes to a
blaze of fire in his one story house (I). Willingham exits out the front door and distraughtly tells a
nearby neighbor to call 911. By the time the fire is extinguished, Willingham s children are dead and
arson investigators come to the house to inspect four days later (I). The two investigators conclude
that the fire is arson and it is considered a triple murder committed by Willingham so they bring him
in for questioning. This along with neighborhood witness testimony leads to an arrest, which is
punishable by death under Texas law. Before the trial, the state gives Willingham a plea deal that if he
pleads guilty he will get life in prison avoiding the death penalty (I). Willingham rejects the plea deal
and is found guilty. From there, Grann uses sections II through V to pick holes in the original case of
the prosecution. Findings of Dr. Gerald Hurst give Willingham some sense of hope that his name
might be cleared as an experiment on Lime street is conducted. The intention is to recreate the scene
of a previous arson case similar to Willingham s (IV). In the original findings of the arson
investigators, the only way flashover can occur is by the presence of some sort of accelerant; however,
the experiment shows that flashover can still occur in a wood structured house and these signs of
flashover are similar to the signs of arson
(IV). Willingham s final appeal is denied by the Board of Pardons and Paroles so he is executed on
February 17th, 2006 (Gran V). The central argument Grann proposes in his article is that the death
penalty should be removed because without the implication of clear forensic evidence, we can never
be truly sure if an individual is guilty. He ends his essay with a statement from the commission
claiming that, There is a chance, however, that Texas could become the first state to acknowledge

History Of The Woodstock Music Festival Of 1969
In early 1969 four men were trying to create a music festival. They had quite a few speed bumps along
the way. Financial and locations struggles were the first to slow them down. After they got those two
figured out they had to worry about the music. Then in April 1969 Creedence Clearwater Revival
signed, after they signed people started lining up to play. The music, venue, and money now settled,
they could start selling tickets. August 15th to 18th of 1969 in Bethel, NY 200,000 music lovers
showed up to listen to great music. To this day the famous festival is still talked about also known as
Woodstock.

transportation and roadblocks were not the only problems at Woodstock; they had only estimated that
about 150,000 would show up for all three days of the festival. When there were about 500,000 people
who came, new problems arose such as lack of food, water supply, sanitation, and medical care. Due
to all the chaos the food suppliers threaten to quit at the last minute. The rain caused the concertgoers
to sleep in the mud, some slept on cardboard in the mud, and people slept in cars that were around that
weren t theirs. The performers had to be transported by helicopter from their hotels to the stage.
The biggest thing that the organizers were not prepared for was the rain on the day the festival started.
All three days the conditions were mud, no sleep, rain, drugs, more mud, and even more smiles. No
matter what, Rain or shine, all the concertgoers stayed even if the conditions were bad. At the festival,
it is suggested that there were many people who had possession of drugs and alcohol. It is hard to tell
how many people actually possessed, since drugs were practically legal during the festival because

1928 Olympics Research Paper
In the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Olympic Games, Canada had a tremendous amount of success. In
fact, it is considered Canada s Golden Age of Sport. Canada won a total of 15 medals. Comparatively,
in the previous Olympic Games, the 1924 Olympics to be specific, Canada only won a total of 4
medals. This rapid increase in success caught the interest and imagination of Canada. It motivated the
nation to engage in recreational sports, especially for women as female athletes had immensely
evolved following the 1928 Olympics. In addition, track and field for both men and women in the
1928 Olympics was a major success as Canada had a total medal count of 8 in track and field. The

Connections Report 1.8 Connections
The theme of love connection between people is a very important part of life. I choose this theme as it
is a very relevant and relatable subject for many people in our society. The four texts I chose were: the
fictional novel Delirium , by Lauren Oliver, the song Blank Space by Taylor Swift, song Same Love
by Macklemore and fictional novel Girl Online , by Zoe Sugg. There was a strong connection of love
between two people in all of these texts.
The first text that I looked at that showed the connection of love was Delirium. This novel discusses
the connection of love. Love is the main theme of this novel. The main character ... Show more

This song is about the struggles society creates for people identifying as a homosexual and discusses
equality and discrimination of people that like the same sex. Macklemore was driven to write this song
because of the issue of equal marriage right and the use of gay as degrading word in society and in the
hip hop industry. He wanted to set an example for others in the music industry, and help change the
stereotypes of homosexuality. As Macklemore writes in his song a bunch of stereotypes all in my head
this shows that society riddles our brains into thinking that it isn t alright to be gay, when really it is.
These stereotypes make it hard for people to feel accepted about their sexuality. This song discusses
how gay is used in an insultive way as quoted in the lyrics; If I was gay I would think hip hop hates
me, Have you read the YouTube comments lately, Man that s gay Gets dropped on the daily, We ve
become so numb to what we re sayin These examples show the connection of love, but in a different
way to what we would usually expect. This song has a different view on the connection of love
compared to other books with the theme of love, as it is about homosexuality rather than
heterosexuality. In my opinion I think what Macklemore is trying to convey is very smart, and I
believe that there should be equality on who you love. I also thing that the words such as gay shouldn t
be used with such negative connotations, and I m sure many others in our society would

Pubius Cornelius Tacitus Essay
Pubius Cornelius Tacitus (55 118AD), was a historian from an equestrian family born in either norther
Italy or Southern Gaul who wrote Biography of Agricola in 98 AD followed by Histories in 105 AD.
The first document, an excerpt from Biography of Agricola 29 32 is a fictional speech from the British
war chief named Calgacus who was preparing his people for battle against Gnaes Julius Agricola the
governor of the Roman provinces in Briton from 78 85 AD and also Tacitus father in law. The second
document is an excerpt from Tacitus Histories 4.74 which is also a fictional speech. This speech given
through the view point of Petillius Cerialis a Roman general who stopped the revolt of the people of
Gaul in 70AD. In my essay I am going to assess whether or not Tacitus motives throughout the
speeches are to shed negative light on Roman conquest and Roman rule of its conquered territories. ...

and why he wrote that document. As for the excerpt from Histories could the fact that he may be from

All Quiet On The Western Front Earth Quotes
In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Remarque, the central symbol is the earth. Earth
represents life, death and perverse nature. It ties to other symbols such as dirt, ground, trenches, and
plants. Earth represents life because it provided protection and shelter to keep the soldiers alive..
Basically, when the soldiers cling on to earth, they are basically clinging on to life because earth
provides them with the necessary essentials to be sustain life such as food which gives them life. Earth
is the only thing that the soldiers can rely on to keep them alive in the war. (?) Ironically, the earth also

Tax Fraud
Introduction
This paper will discuss the topic of tax fraud. We will begin by introducing the basic concepts of tax
fraud. Secondly, this paper will also delve into some of the laws that have been passed as punishment
for those parties that decide to commit tax fraud. We will also highlight some of the more current
examples of tax fraud that have been committed and the details that lead to the perpetrators being
caught. Lastly we will discuss the role that criminal investigators have in the realm of tax fraud. Tax
fraud can be stated simply as: willfully supplying fraudulent information on tax returns to the Internal

Current Fraud Schemes There have been many famous tax fraud cases over the years. The ability of
individuals to consistently find ingeniously creative ways of committing tax fraud, especially with the
magnitude of rules and regulations concerning tax, is astounding. Every year there are thousands of
instances of tax fraud schemes taking place, accounting for billions of dollars of lost revenues for the
IRS. In 2011 alone, the IRS reported roughly 2 million potentially fraudulent tax returns out of over
145 million tax returns filed.(htt) In addition to highly sophisticated tax fraud schemes, sometimes
very simple schemes are able to exist without interference. Of the approximately 2 million fraudulent
tax returns filed in 2011, identity theft accounted for about 450,000. (htt) In Tampa, FL for instance,
identity theft for the purpose of filing fraudulent tax returns has become more and more prevalent.
(htt1) Law enforcement bears witness to thousands of people annually in possession of ledgers, tax

not illegal to simply possess this information, only to use it. Lack of ascertainable proof has forced the

everyone involved. Similarly, there has been a recent surge in the identity theft of Puerto Rican

LEGAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES PERTAINING TO THE CARE OF PATIENTS WITH ExDS 264
Physical restraint and sedation is often paramount to allow emergency personal to provide treatment
and intervention associated with positive patient outcomes (1,5,7 9 11). Often the severe measures
needed to restrain and control ExDS patients are perceived in a negative way in the public eye. The
management of ExDS patients in sedation causes controversy when observed by bystanders that do
not understand the importance of sedation. (1,7,9 11). A legal and ethical dilemma for emergency

A dilemma occurs when another perceived coarse of action is observed (39,40). In the case of ExDS,
emergency personal have determined that in order to apply appropriate treatment, the safest course of

The Shakespearian Play Much Ado About Nothing
The Shakespearian play Much Ado about Nothing explores the position of women in a patriarchal
society and the difficulties they face. This play demonstrates how women in Elizabethan society were
expected to behave in a passive manner, how the men s opinion was accepted over the females and
how women had to conform to men. The over arching idea of the ideal female was that she was
passive and was accepting of her role in society. This theme is explored throughout the entirety of the
play but is highly demonstrated in Act one scene one of the play. In this scene the Audience is
introduced to Beatrice she is the opposite of the typical female stereotype of the time as she is
independent and she possess a quick wit and a sharp tongue. During this scene the ... Show more

The Bin Breaker Analysis
Are we controlling our own use of technology or is someone controlling it for us? The answer may
appear to be obvious but the reality is those who create the software control how much of our time
goes to technology/ applications. They have thought of explicit ways for us to essentially never want
to put our phone down. Now when you go to the movies, a restaurant, school, or work everyone is
constantly on their phone. They rarely engage with each other because they are too busy looking at
just about anything on their phone. The world so heavily relies on technology and this is what is
ruining mankind. People are not able to communicate with each other and socialize with each other.

There is no need to get rid of technology completely but their needs to serious change in how much

Your Shadow Walker training has progressed very well, John. As Miss Colette told you the day you

rat like creatures that plagued our village. Good! I like your train of thought. Here, take this pack of
small healing potions. They will help you during battle. John reached out and grabbed the small bag.

A Modern Adaptation Of Homer s Odyssey Essay
A modern adaptation of Homer s Odyssey one of the most widely read ancient literary works in the
world Margaret Atwood s novella, The Penelopiad, retells this classic story, this time from the
perspective of Penelope, Odysseus wife, who spent ten long years waiting faithfully for him to return
form the Trojan war, and is now lameting her life from the greek underworld, Hades. The Penelopiad
deconstructs the portrayal of penelope in the Odyssey, showing that instead of waiting and wasting
away, she instead employed her wits, feminine charm and strength of character to build a strong
empire and achieve her own ends, or at least, that s what she would like us to believe. Chapter 26 is a
courtroom scene, where Odysseus is on trial for the hanging of the 12 maids, which he justifies by
convincing the judge of their supposed indescretions. Atwood employs various literary devices, such
as the exploitation of genre and dark humour, to convey the double standard between genders, the
failures of the justice system, and the lack of consequences awarded to those in power.
One of the most obvious themes in this chapter is how much the justice system failed the maids, who
were, in essence, innocent. Having been raped by the suitors, the fact that they were put to death for
not asking Odysseus permission to sleep with them is ludicrous, as the very definition of rape relies on
a lack of permission. The choice of setting and style for this chapter is ironic, as, set in a

Greek Art Description Essay
Description: This white marble statue group was made in 40 20CE and it is a masterpiece of the
sculptors of Rhodes. The sculpture shows the Laocoon, a priest of Apollo in the city of Troy together
with his young sons. The three are battling with a giant serpent that winds its coils around their bodies.
The story behind this sculpture is that during the Trojan War, the Laocoon, warned his fellow Trojans
against taking in the wooden horse left by the Greeks outside the city gates. Athena and Poseidon, who
were favouring the Greeks, sent two great sea serpents which have wrapped their coils around
Laocoon and his two sons and are killing them. From the Roman point of view, the death of these

is contained in the face of Laocoon as his lips are parted in an expression of anguish, his brow
furrowed with pain, eyes filled with torment. Laocoon is half seated on the boulder and his cloak is
dropping from him and draped over the boulder. Laocoon s right arm is bends from the elbow trying to
reach the serpent from behind his head and his left hand is reaching down to grip the serpents throat,
trying desperately prevent the serpent from biting his hip. Every muscle, every sinew of Laocoon s
body stretches and twisted showing the intensity of his struggle as he fights for his life, the veins
standing out as if pulsing with blood. Laoccon s two young sons, less than half his height, and the way
they both look toward their father with fearful eye really brings emotions to this statue. Overall the all

Rose For Emily Plot
A Rose for Emily is an interesting story about Emily Grierson s life, separated into parts, explained by
the narrator. There are five parts to this story and each of them has a unique significance to the story.
Throughout the story, a plot is developed and told by the narrator. The development of this plot
directly shapes the events that take place. Plots vary from story to story, but the basic meaning is still
there. A plot is defined as a sequence of interrelated events that make up its basic narrative structure.
Mostly, plots have a definite beginning, middle and end. Most of the time, a story has a chronological
plot, and in A Rose for Emily s case it is chronological throughout five parts. The plots purpose is to

Part two ventures into Emily relationship with a man named Homer Barron, a construction worker
who works on the sidewalks. Emily and Barron s relationship is frowned upon because of their
differences in values, social class, and territorial backgrounds, according to the people of the town.
This is the complication aspect of the plot because the conflict is how the townspeople think the
relationship between Emily and Homer is inappropriate due to social differences and background. It
seems Emily and her family are somewhat royal to the people around town, and rather wealthy. This is
why the townspeople are so nosy into Emily s life, because her and her family are the talk of the town.
Part three has Emily s father pass away, and Emily secluding herself and then getting sick from it.
Emily does not have a cold, more like a mental breakdown because she lost her father. This is the
crisis stage of the plot, because Emily s father died, and it doesn t seem like she has any other family
around, so it was a hard hit. Part four has Emily according to the townspeople, preparing for her
wedding. The townspeople find out about a possibility of a wedding after Emily is found buying a
bunch of men s bathroom items, apparently there is a correlation. After all of this is found out, Homer
Barron leaves town and is not around until he is seen entering Emily s house and not coming back out.

War In The Pacific
The Leyte Operation American involvement with the war in the Pacific may have begun with the
bombing of Pearl Harbor, but it quickly escalated to the shores of the Philippine islands. Battles were
hard won and bitterly lost throughout the push in the pacific. Yet, one loss carried significantly more
agony for General Douglas MacArthur than all the others. MacArthur was forced to abandon the
Philippine islands under direct orders from President Franklin Roosevelt in March 1942 (History
2010). With bitter disappointment MacArthur vowed he shall return. As the war raged on it became
clear that the Philippine islands was key in the strategy to penetrate the Japanese hold in the Pacific.
However, another defeat in the Philippines would have crippled the momentum of the Allied forces in
the pacific. Japanese offensive abilities were significantly reduced in June 1942, after its defeat at the
battle of Midway. Suffering the loss of four aircraft carriers, Japan was forced to take a defensive
posture to protect what land it held in the Pacific (U.S. History 2008). This ... Show more content on

The Radioactive Iodine Uptake Of The Thyroid Gland
The radioactive iodine uptake is the measure of the amount of iodine avidity of the thyroid gland
(Cooper, 2003).Physician use RAI to find the functional condition of the thyroid nodules
(Panneerselvan et al., 2013).RAIU is measured at different time intervals mostly 24 hour after the
administration of the isotope, the RAIU is inversely proportional to the concentration of iodine in the
plasma and directly proportional to the thyroid functional state (Little, 2006).
Radioactive iodine scans are also useful in patient who show a sign of thyrotoxicosis, it helps in

What Is Paley s Design Argument
This is the second argument about God s existence. Perhaps the most popular variant owed to this this
argument is William Paley s argument concerning the watch. Essentially, this argument states that
after observing a watch, together with its intricate parts, which function together as a unit in an
accurate manner to keep time, anybody must realize that such piece of machinery has its creator, as it
is too complicated to have easily come into presence through other means, like evolution (Ratzsch,
2005). The following is a skeleton of this argument: Human artifacts are items resulting from
intelligent design and such artifacts have an aim. Universes appear like these human artifacts. Hence:
it is likely that the universe is an outcome of intelligent design and has an aim. However, the universe
is both gigantic and complex than an artifact made by a human. Therefore, there is likelihood that a
powerful and a vastly intelligent designer created the universe. ... Show more content on

Artifacts like watches are the items of intelligent design and so, organisms are also things of
intelligent design. Hume stated that things that can be compared to arguments are few. He noted that
watches are not identical to living things and hence deduced that Paley s argument is extremely feeble.
This is another kind of criticism in which Hume fails. This is because the local design argument of
Paley is good comprehended not as an analogical argument but rather as adductive argument (which is
the best explained argument). Thus, it must not be examined on the basis of similarity of watches
(analog) to living organisms (the target), but rather by the way of surprise principle. Surprise principle
states that design hypothesis is good warranted as compared to Random Hypothesis. This allegation is
not impacted by the fact that the organisms are different to other things. Thus Hume s criticism misses

large difference and it makes the application of the Adaboost much harder. So I tried to scale the data

Casilda In The Judge s Wife By Isabel Allende
Indeed, a woman should soften but not weaken a man. This supposition exemplifies the character
Casilda from The Judge s Wife short story by Isabel Allende. Although not seen by all as the main
character, Casilda is the strongest and most evolutionary personality of the short story. The Judge s
Wife is an exceptional tale that follows the progression of characters as they fight against their
predetermined destinies and how they are viewed in others eyes. Casilda is a catalyst for the evolution
of almost every character in the story. Not only does her character grow in The Judge s Wife, but she
is also a medium for the growth of the two other main characters in the story. Casilda molds the
personality of a majority of the characters in the story, distinctly Judge Hidalgo and Nicolas Vida.
Casilda noticeably changed the character of Judge Hidalgo, into a softer man, in his field of
professionalism. In a close analysis of this narrative, we find that the Judge was a very cranky
bachelor who was very feared by all, in the village he lived, for his stubbornness and severe temper.
We are told that, when he enforced the law, Judge Hidalgo failed to give any account of the whys and
wherefores behind the indicted committing the crime. According to the author, not only did the judge
refuse to apply any common sense in his judgments but was also equally harsh in his condemnation of
the theft of a chicken as of premeditated murder (Allende 284). Across the village, not a single person
was safe from his cruelty. However, the judge changed, significantly after he married Casilda. All this
came to reality when the priest and a group of Catholic women approached Casilda to plead for the
life of Juana the Forlorn, a poor old woman who was subjected to torture for the reason that she made
an effort to capture her son. Casalda heeded to their requests and set forth for the town, with a bottle of
fresh water and a basket of food, taking her children dressed in their Sunday best. In spite of the
soldiers struggles to keep her away, the cries of her children crossed the years of Judge Hidalgo. This
made him realize the mistakes he had been making prompting him, Judge Hidalgo, to come down in
person and unlock the cage,

No Need To Call By Sherry Turkle
Digital Communication From the beginning when humans developed the written word, novel forms of
technology in all of its forms, have been hailed as potential saviors of our society or as the harbinger
of its downfall. Modern communication methods such as texting, tweeting, IM ing, and other forms of
digital interaction have been credited as a new wave in learning techniques or as the end of verbal
exchange and intelligence in today s youth. Various authors have offered their opinions either for or
against nonverbal digital dialog backed by differing amounts of personal and structured research. In
the essay No Need to Call , originally published in the book Alone Together author Sherry Turkle,
program director at MIT, Turkle discusses how new forms of digital communication may be robbing
society of the ability and art of vocal communication in person and on the telephone. Turkle offers in
her essay, examples of how individuals avoid the use of telephone technology and the reasoning
behind their choices. Michaela Cullington graduated with a Master s Degree in speech and language
pathology offers in her essay, Does Texting Affect Writing that the abbreviated way we write in our
texts has had little effect on our ability to create a formal piece of intelligent writing despite public
fears that it will be the downfall of the written word. Digital communication methods can harbor many
other pitfalls that must be navigated by today s society. Our society s love/hate

Gender, Ethnicity, And Class
The purpose of this paper is to assess two research based articles from a psychology journal from two
different time periods. The assessment was to compare the way gender, ethnicity, and class was
represented in each of the articles and how they differ from each time period. The articles were chosen
from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The first article was from 1976 titled, Impact
of fear of success and sex role attitudes on women s competitive achievement (Peplau, 1976). The
second article of interest was titled, Psychological well being and job stress predict marital support
interactions: A naturalistic observational study of dual earner couples in their homes (Wang Repetti,
2014). The piece from 1976 was written by Letitia Anne Peplau and she wanted to compare results
from a previous experiment done by M.S. Horner in 1972 that measured the fear if success on women
s achievement to her own experiment on the same topic. Horner suggests that many women are in
conflict about intellectual and professional achievement (Peplau, 1976). Peplau wanted to compare
Horner s results to her own results when it concerned women s sex role attitudes of traditionalism and
liberalism. The goal was to see if there was a difference in the fear factor of success between the two
ideologies of dating women when they were on their own and when they were with their partners. She

Use Of Social Media Platforms On Consumer Behavior
Looking for information is a highly important driver for a consumer to use social media platforms.
Information quality refers to a consumer s assessment of the information presented on a website based
on accuracy, relevance, helpfulness, currency (being up to date), and unbiasness (Cao et al., 2005; Ou
Sia, 2010; Zhang von Dran, 2000). Information is considered to be a key website feature that
influences consumer behavior. Past research (Cao et al.; Day, 1997; Huizingh, 2000; Iyer, 2001;
Katerattanakul Siau, 1999; Ou Sia; Zhang von Dran) has found that information is highly important to
the development of a company s website to draw in and continue to attract online customers.
Interacting with information is described as the process people use in interacting with content (Toms,
2002). If a brand post contains information about the brand or product, then the brand fans
motivations to participate or consume the content of the brand post are realized.
Information content is considered to influence the cognitive (seeking, attending, interpreting, and
critiquing information), affective (excitement toward the information and ultimately the brand and
satisfaction), and behavioral (interacting with the information) components of online brand
engagement. Based on these, the following hypotheses are derived:
H1A: Perceived information quality on a Twitter brand s account that a consumer has followed
positively predicts cognitive online brand engagement.
H1B: Perceived

Robert Browning s The Ring And The Book
Although the early part of Robert Browning s creative life was spent in comparative obscurity, he has
come to be regarded as one of the most important poets of the Victorian period. His dramatic
monologues and the psycho historical epic The Ring and the Book (1868 1869), a novel in verse, have
established him as a major figure in the history of English poetry. His claim to attention as a children s
writer is more modest, resting as it does almost entirely on one poem, The Pied Piper of Hamelin,
included almost as an afterthought in Bells and Pomegranites. No. III. Dramatic Lyrics (1842) and
evidently never highly regarded by its creator. Nevertheless, The Pied Piper moved quickly into the
canon of children s literature, where it has remained ever since, receiving the dubious honor (shared
by the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen and J.M. Barrie s Peter Pan, 1911) of appearing almost
as frequently in adapted versions as in the author s original. Browning was born on 7 May 1812 in
Camberwell, a middle class suburb of London; he was the only son of Robert Browning, a clerk in the
Bank of England, and a devoutly religious German Scotch mother, Sarah Anna Wiedemann Browning.
He had a sister, Sarianna, who like her parents was devoted to her poet brother. While Mrs. Browning
s piety and love of music are frequently cited as important influences on the poet s development, his
father s scholarly interests and unusual educational practices may have been equally

Native Americans And Western Culture
Native Americans have an intimate relationship with the Earth that is very unusual to western culture.
For centuries before the arrival of Europeans, Native Americans lived off the land in North America,
without claiming ownership or creating massive environmental destruction. They have both a deep
love and fear for the power of nature, and try to live as one with the environment. Because of this
common value among tribes, Native Americans are often stereotyped as being the first
environmentalists, which is not entirely true. Native Americans do value and treasure the environment,
but not always in the way western environmentalists imagen. Modern environmentalists grew up in a
different culture, one that embraces development and progress ... Show more content on

Positives between Environmentalists and Native Americans There is good reason why
environmentalists so often associate themselves with Native Americans. Indigenous culture has a deep
reverence for the environment that is not prevalent in western culture. Using nature for hunting,
gathering, and planting required religious procedures and ceremonies in order for Native Americans to
receive permission to use resources (Cornell, 1985). Because of this cautious respect,
environmentalists and Native Americans often agree with each other on environmental issues,
including fracking, mining, and land exploitation. Modern native american activists more frequently
are from western tribes, including Crow, Lakota, and Cheyenne, because they were in contact with
European capitalist culture later than eastern tribes, so they have held on to their old traditions
(Cornell, 1985). Environmentalists and Native Americans also overlap in their concern for the people
and future generations. When these two groups are separate, they have weaker political power, but
when they join forces they can have a much stronger impact. One survey compared the beliefs of
Native American hunters and majority culture (western) hunters, to see if Native Americans truly

western hunters to rank multiple plant and animal species in importance. Of the 17 Native

Power In The Shawshank Redemption
The Shawshank Redemption Throughout human society there has always been a struggle for justice,
equality, and control. While these concepts are ideal and socially acceptable to most people they can
also lead to a state of being in power for other people. In the film The Shawshank Redemption, the
filmmaker achieves a connection with the audience by showing reoccurring instances of the struggle
for power between the protagonist Andy Dufresne and Warden Samuel Norton through social status
and the desire for perceived justice, equality and control. In order to understand the fight for power in
the film it is important to be aware of the social classes that form inside the prison walls. As the film
opens Andy Dufresne is one of the newest inmates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Andy may be low on the social scale inside the prison, on the outside world he would most
likely be considered a highly educated and respectable man due to his previous position as the vice
president of a bank. The Warden uses Andy s banking talents to his own advantage, but later on in the
film Andy flips this around and takes advantage of the Warden. Being very secretive Andy starts
transferring some of the Warden s money into a fake account he set up for when he gets out of
Shawshank. Similarly as to how The Shawshank Redemption portrays social trends, people tend to
find themselves drawn into different classes or groups in the real world, which an underlying theme
that people can apply to their own lives. In the film Andy uses this to his advantage by using his
outside prison world skills, and by using the perception he is looked at while inside the prison to
successfully be able to control and get the best of the

  • 2. The Negro Artist And The Racial Mountain Emmanuel Adamson HUM 312 Prof: Justin Gammage 09/09/2015 Hughes s The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain (1926) The article The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain by Hughes (1926), the author shows a situation that the African Americans felt underestimated for being black and attempted to embrace whites culture. This was because white people looked down on them during that era. He shows this by expressing his disappointment with a statement made by one of the most promising of the young Negro poets who says that, I want to be a poet not a Negro poet, meaning behind that, I want to be white. (Par 1) He wanted to be white so that his artwork would be better accepted. Not only this young Negro wanted to be white for him to be uplifted in the society, but also some other black people wanted to be white as well for them to be estimated and respected. According to Hughes, this statement of denying being black was the mountain standing in the way of any true Negro art in America this urge within the race towards whiteness, the desire to pour racial individuality into the mold of American standardization, and to be a little Negro and as much American as possible. (Hughes, Para. 1). This wants to tell us how many blacks artists, felt it was necessary to be white in order for themselves and their work to be accepted and recognized. Hughes also talks about the state of the African American families of that period. In his second paragraph, he says that, Negro middle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Fensive Realist, John Mearsheimer, A Man Many Ir Majors... Two authors agree, and one, the offensive realist John Mearsheimer, a man many IR majors and theorists have grown to know and love, continues to maintain his position. Mearsheimer s next book should be called, Mutually Assured Destruction by John Mearsheimer. His Offensive Realist perspective creates a gloomy forecast that he wishes to refute for the Chinese American great power debate. With this book being published in 2001 and the most updated copy in April 2014, it is probably very interesting to read the first edition of this book in comparison to the most update version. However that being said Mearsheimer s initial arguments of the chapter assigned, has proven to be true. Recently assigned, was an article on the current situation in the South China Sea. An imperative region specifically for the U.S and home to one of the busiest shipping lanes in the World, Mearsheimer discusses in depth the Chinese position in this region. Mearsheimer gives an extensive synopsis of his core elements of IR theory, but his main argument which all three theorists seem to agree on is the American resemblance of China s geo political strategy. While Ikenberry and Glaser, focus on international diplomacy that must be taken to prevent major war and the dismal likelihood of a great power war between these to powers. As more knowledge is gained on this topic, it is extremely difficult, as a student to truly understand what will actually happen in the future for China and the United States. ... • 4. The Importance Of Censorship Content On The Internet With the rise of the Internet, it has given everyone opportunities to stay better connected in the world today and to be entertained. This has led to the creation of sites like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Reddit, Google, and so many more. A lot of big companies have implemented the internet, making them more successful and giving them a wider reach for business. With all this freedom, however, this leads to inappropriate content being on the internet as well. There is an abundance of violent and sexual content on the internet just like with older media, like movies and music. The difference is that this unsuitable content is more accessible than before the invention of the internet. This has caused discussion about whether or not the internet should be censored, and if so, to what extent. While it is understandable why people do not want inappropriate content around them in a more accessible way, allowing the bad content lets the good content be just as accessible as well. The Internet should not be censored for violent and sexual content because this silences voices that have the right to be heard and slows creativity and originality in art and entertainment. Additionally, silencing freedom of speech takes voices away from the people and gives it to the richest and powerful. Censoring the Internet would be taking away freedom of speech for the average internet user. The largest internet censorship system is in China, which censors anything harmless to the Chinese Communist ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Why Some UK Companies are Reluctant to Invest in Training... Explain why some UK companies are reluctant to invest in training and development. Do you consider these reasons to be valid? The rapid development of technology and in other areas have led companies ability to replicate products more easily, and the rapidly expansion of the service sector has led the nature of consumers to demand high quality at the lowest prices. Both of these highlight the importance of gaining the competitive advantage through the labour force. A method through which a company could obtain this edge, is through training and development of their various skills. Its implementation and management concerns many concepts, esoteric and thus hard to emulate. Training and development can have many benefits ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Training was also seen to enhance job motivation under certain conditions: there was a practical use to the training and this had been clearly depicted to them (Heyes, Stuart). Alternatives to T D are to poach employees from other rivals, or acquire employees through the expensive recruitment and selection process who has the requisite skills required premium must be paid. The former is a large barrier to the T D initiative as the benefits accrue to the company and the employee. The rival can potentially poach your trained employees. This is known as the Prisoner s Dilemma, due to which many companies in the UK do not invest in human resource development (Sisson, Storey). The use of temporary or outsourced employees will not only be harder to train as they may deemed unworthy of investment due to their movement ability, they may be not able to provide the high quality service. Though companies outsourcing their call centres seem to be providing them the necessary service. But these operators in India cannot replicate the highly customer orientated service that British call centres can provide i.e. speaking to Yorkshire people in their own dialects this would require training. Employees are going to become trained whether the initiative is taken or not as with time they will gain tacit knowledge and they will pick things up by sitting next to Nellie over time. Today, sexism is still a threat to women of all over the world. Kathryn Stockett, the author of The Help, addresses sexism to make the time period genuine to the reader. The sexism in Stockett s book is brought forth indirectly. Stockett uses two of her main protagonists as an example on how sexism affects women and the roles they are supposed to play. Sexism is a practice that is detrimental to women, entices violence, and creates a social barrier between the sexes. To begin with, women often find themselves in adverse situations that they have no control over. Skeeter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Comparing today s society to the society in The Help, jobs were only offered to women who fit the look of a petite, feminine woman and nowadays people are hired for the amount of experience they had. Stockett emphasizes the gender barrier many women experience during the time period she depicts in her book. In the beginning chapters when Miss. Skeeter is looking for a job she encounters a, squat, single column under HELP WANTED: FEMALE (Stockett 68), in the daily paper implying there is a limit of jobs that women can work. Most of them happened to be secretary positions. This is not only hurtful to women who do not fit the conventional stereotype of a woman, but to women who want to change their world even if it means baby steps. Men are always offered, at least four columns filled with bank managers, accountants, loan officers, cotton collate operators. On this page, Percy Gray, LP, is offering Jr. Stenographers fifty more cents an hour (Stockett 69), additionally adding to the notion that men have more job opportunities and make more money. The way that sexism plays its role in society make it seem like there is no way of overcoming this obstacle faced by women. • 8. Trial By Fire Did Daxas Execute An Innocent Man By David... In David Grann s Trial by Fire: Did Texas Execute an Innocent Man? , published on September 7, 2009, the overall question addressed is whether we should keep the death penalty legal. Grann begins his argument with his account of the events that occurred on the morning of December 23, 1991 in Corsicana, Texas. Cameron Todd Willingham, the husband and father of three children awakes to a blaze of fire in his one story house (I). Willingham exits out the front door and distraughtly tells a nearby neighbor to call 911. By the time the fire is extinguished, Willingham s children are dead and arson investigators come to the house to inspect four days later (I). The two investigators conclude that the fire is arson and it is considered a triple murder committed by Willingham so they bring him in for questioning. This along with neighborhood witness testimony leads to an arrest, which is punishable by death under Texas law. Before the trial, the state gives Willingham a plea deal that if he pleads guilty he will get life in prison avoiding the death penalty (I). Willingham rejects the plea deal and is found guilty. From there, Grann uses sections II through V to pick holes in the original case of the prosecution. Findings of Dr. Gerald Hurst give Willingham some sense of hope that his name might be cleared as an experiment on Lime street is conducted. The intention is to recreate the scene of a previous arson case similar to Willingham s (IV). In the original findings of the arson investigators, the only way flashover can occur is by the presence of some sort of accelerant; however, the experiment shows that flashover can still occur in a wood structured house and these signs of flashover are similar to the signs of arson (IV). Willingham s final appeal is denied by the Board of Pardons and Paroles so he is executed on February 17th, 2006 (Gran V). The central argument Grann proposes in his article is that the death penalty should be removed because without the implication of clear forensic evidence, we can never be truly sure if an individual is guilty. He ends his essay with a statement from the commission claiming that, There is a chance, however, that Texas could become the first state to acknowledge ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I choose this theme as it is a very relevant and relatable subject for many people in our society. The four texts I chose were: the fictional novel Delirium , by Lauren Oliver, the song Blank Space by Taylor Swift, song Same Love by Macklemore and fictional novel Girl Online , by Zoe Sugg. There was a strong connection of love between two people in all of these texts. The first text that I looked at that showed the connection of love was Delirium. This song is about the struggles society creates for people identifying as a homosexual and discusses equality and discrimination of people that like the same sex. Macklemore was driven to write this song because of the issue of equal marriage right and the use of gay as degrading word in society and in the hip hop industry. He wanted to set an example for others in the music industry, and help change the stereotypes of homosexuality. As Macklemore writes in his song a bunch of stereotypes all in my head this shows that society riddles our brains into thinking that it isn t alright to be gay, when really it is. These stereotypes make it hard for people to feel accepted about their sexuality. This song discusses how gay is used in an insultive way as quoted in the lyrics; If I was gay I would think hip hop hates me, Have you read the YouTube comments lately, Man that s gay Gets dropped on the daily, We ve become so numb to what we re sayin These examples show the connection of love, but in a different way to what we would usually expect. This song has a different view on the connection of love compared to other books with the theme of love, as it is about homosexuality rather than heterosexuality. In my opinion I think what Macklemore is trying to convey is very smart, and I believe that there should be equality on who you love. I also thing that the words such as gay shouldn t be used with such negative connotations, and I m sure many others in our society would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. A Modern Adaptation Of Homer s Odyssey Essay A modern adaptation of Homer s Odyssey one of the most widely read ancient literary works in the world Margaret Atwood s novella, The Penelopiad, retells this classic story, this time from the perspective of Penelope, Odysseus wife, who spent ten long years waiting faithfully for him to return form the Trojan war, and is now lameting her life from the greek underworld, Hades. The Penelopiad deconstructs the portrayal of penelope in the Odyssey, showing that instead of waiting and wasting away, she instead employed her wits, feminine charm and strength of character to build a strong empire and achieve her own ends, or at least, that s what she would like us to believe. Chapter 26 is a courtroom scene, where Odysseus is on trial for the hanging of the 12 maids, which he justifies by convincing the judge of their supposed indescretions. Atwood employs various literary devices, such as the exploitation of genre and dark humour, to convey the double standard between genders, the failures of the justice system, and the lack of consequences awarded to those in power. One of the most obvious themes in this chapter is how much the justice system failed the maids, who were, in essence, innocent. Having been raped by the suitors, the fact that they were put to death for not asking Odysseus permission to sleep with them is ludicrous, as the very definition of rape relies on a lack of permission. • 33. What Is Paley s Design Argument This is the second argument about God s existence. Perhaps the most popular variant owed to this this argument is William Paley s argument concerning the watch. Essentially, this argument states that after observing a watch, together with its intricate parts, which function together as a unit in an accurate manner to keep time, anybody must realize that such piece of machinery has its creator, as it is too complicated to have easily come into presence through other means, like evolution (Ratzsch, 2005). The following is a skeleton of this argument: Human artifacts are items resulting from intelligent design and such artifacts have an aim. Universes appear like these human artifacts. Hence: it is likely that the universe is an outcome of intelligent design and has an aim. However, the universe is both gigantic and complex than an artifact made by a human. This is because the local design argument of Paley is good comprehended not as an analogical argument but rather as adductive argument (which is the best explained argument). Thus, it must not be examined on the basis of similarity of watches (analog) to living organisms (the target), but rather by the way of surprise principle. I have put my heart into many different pursuits, during my undergraduate years; it is through this two of experiences that I have come to realize my life s ambition. Research and projects has made me appreciate the rigors of the database process, and in the mean time, the result became a surprise for programming that could change the way that we calculate; a summer in investment company made my realize that trade is my true passion and inspiration. After communicating with Professor Lepage, I decided to get rid of the data of the third kind of wine but just keep the data of the first and the second kind of wine. Then, I looked into the data of 13 chemical features, I could see that the range of each group of data is various from each other. That is a large difference and it makes the application of the Adaboost much harder. So I tried to scale the data and set the criteria by myself. If the number was larger or equal to the median of its group, it will be directly considered +1 . If the number was smaller than the median of its group, it will be stored as 1 in the vector. After scaling the data, I used the code that Professor Lepage sent us. I had each of the chemical feature stored in a vector. And I built up the heuristic containing these 13 chemical features in the matrix. By the R code, I got the results of epsilon, alpha and the loss of measure by the accuracy. I decided which k are the optimal k bases on the average of the prediction error. In order to better compare the results from different statistical models, I also applied the models in only two chemical features and in all chemical features by using K nn algorithm and K means clustering. Based on what I had already known. I didn t stick on one single model. I tried to use different statistical models to figure out the prediction errors and do the comparison among them. I also researched online to deepen our understanding of boosting, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Casilda In The Judge s Wife By Isabel Allende Indeed, a woman should soften but not weaken a man. This supposition exemplifies the character Casilda from The Judge s Wife short story by Isabel Allende. Although not seen by all as the main character, Casilda is the strongest and most evolutionary personality of the short story. The Judge s Wife is an exceptional tale that follows the progression of characters as they fight against their predetermined destinies and how they are viewed in others eyes. Casilda is a catalyst for the evolution of almost every character in the story. Not only does her character grow in The Judge s Wife, but she is also a medium for the growth of the two other main characters in the story. Casilda molds the personality of a majority of the characters in the story, distinctly Judge Hidalgo and Nicolas Vida. Casilda noticeably changed the character of Judge Hidalgo, into a softer man, in his field of professionalism. In a close analysis of this narrative, we find that the Judge was a very cranky bachelor who was very feared by all, in the village he lived, for his stubbornness and severe temper. We are told that, when he enforced the law, Judge Hidalgo failed to give any account of the whys and wherefores behind the indicted committing the crime. According to the author, not only did the judge refuse to apply any common sense in his judgments but was also equally harsh in his condemnation of the theft of a chicken as of premeditated murder (Allende 284). Across the village, not a single person was safe from his cruelty. However, the judge changed, significantly after he married Casilda. All this came to reality when the priest and a group of Catholic women approached Casilda to plead for the life of Juana the Forlorn, a poor old woman who was subjected to torture for the reason that she made an effort to capture her son. Casalda heeded to their requests and set forth for the town, with a bottle of fresh water and a basket of food, taking her children dressed in their Sunday best. In spite of the soldiers struggles to keep her away, the cries of her children crossed the years of Judge Hidalgo. This made him realize the mistakes he had been making prompting him, Judge Hidalgo, to come down in person and unlock the cage, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. No Need To Call By Sherry Turkle Digital Communication From the beginning when humans developed the written word, novel forms of technology in all of its forms, have been hailed as potential saviors of our society or as the harbinger of its downfall. Modern communication methods such as texting, tweeting, IM ing, and other forms of digital interaction have been credited as a new wave in learning techniques or as the end of verbal exchange and intelligence in today s youth. Various authors have offered their opinions either for or against nonverbal digital dialog backed by differing amounts of personal and structured research. In the essay No Need to Call , originally published in the book Alone Together author Sherry Turkle, program director at MIT, Turkle discusses how new forms of digital communication may be robbing society of the ability and art of vocal communication in person and on the telephone. Turkle offers in her essay, examples of how individuals avoid the use of telephone technology and the reasoning behind their choices. Michaela Cullington graduated with a Master s Degree in speech and language pathology offers in her essay, Does Texting Affect Writing that the abbreviated way we write in our texts has had little effect on our ability to create a formal piece of intelligent writing despite public fears that it will be the downfall of the written word. Digital communication methods can harbor many other pitfalls that must be navigated by today s society. Our society s love/hate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Gender, Ethnicity, And Class The purpose of this paper is to assess two research based articles from a psychology journal from two different time periods. The assessment was to compare the way gender, ethnicity, and class was represented in each of the articles and how they differ from each time period. The articles were chosen from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The first article was from 1976 titled, Impact of fear of success and sex role attitudes on women s competitive achievement (Peplau, 1976). The second article of interest was titled, Psychological well being and job stress predict marital support interactions: A naturalistic observational study of dual earner couples in their homes (Wang Repetti, 2014). The piece from 1976 was written by Letitia Anne Peplau and she wanted to compare results from a previous experiment done by M.S. Horner in 1972 that measured the fear if success on women s achievement to her own experiment on the same topic. Horner suggests that many women are in conflict about intellectual and professional achievement (Peplau, 1976). Peplau wanted to compare Horner s results to her own results when it concerned women s sex role attitudes of traditionalism and liberalism. The goal was to see if there was a difference in the fear factor of success between the two ideologies of dating women when they were on their own and when they were with their partners. She also wanted to see if the fear of success was correlated differently to competition against ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Kent State University Internship Assignment This past summer, I had the opportunity to study at Kent State University s NYC Studio and intern at Fabric to Finish, Inc., a product development consulting firm in the Garment Center. I valued my time there, but would not call my internship a success. I was inexperienced and undereducated and it showed in nearly everything I did. In fact, I knew nothing about the product development process and made countless mistakes. I understand that making mistakes while interning is apart of the learning process and is more or less normal, but being normal is not acceptable for me. While I was embarrassed of my lack knowledge, I still loved going to my internship everyday, being able to help create a product from start to finish figuring out what fabric ... • 40. Use Of Social Media Platforms On Consumer Behavior Looking for information is a highly important driver for a consumer to use social media platforms. Information quality refers to a consumer s assessment of the information presented on a website based on accuracy, relevance, helpfulness, currency (being up to date), and unbiasness (Cao et al., 2005; Ou Sia, 2010; Zhang von Dran, 2000). Information is considered to be a key website feature that influences consumer behavior. Past research (Cao et al.; Day, 1997; Huizingh, 2000; Iyer, 2001; Katerattanakul Siau, 1999; Ou Sia; Zhang von Dran) has found that information is highly important to the development of a company s website to draw in and continue to attract online customers. Interacting with information is described as the process people use in interacting with content (Toms, 2002). If a brand post contains information about the brand or product, then the brand fans motivations to participate or consume the content of the brand post are realized. Information content is considered to influence the cognitive (seeking, attending, interpreting, and critiquing information), affective (excitement toward the information and ultimately the brand and satisfaction), and behavioral (interacting with the information) components of online brand engagement. Based on these, the following hypotheses are derived: H1A: Perceived information quality on a Twitter brand s account that a consumer has followed positively predicts cognitive online brand engagement. H1B: Perceived ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Robert Browning s The Ring And The Book Although the early part of Robert Browning s creative life was spent in comparative obscurity, he has come to be regarded as one of the most important poets of the Victorian period. His dramatic monologues and the psycho historical epic The Ring and the Book (1868 1869), a novel in verse, have established him as a major figure in the history of English poetry. His claim to attention as a children s writer is more modest, resting as it does almost entirely on one poem, The Pied Piper of Hamelin, included almost as an afterthought in Bells and Pomegranites. No. III. Dramatic Lyrics (1842) and evidently never highly regarded by its creator. Nevertheless, The Pied Piper moved quickly into the canon of children s literature, where it has remained ever since, receiving the dubious honor (shared by the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen and J.M. Barrie s Peter Pan, 1911) of appearing almost as frequently in adapted versions as in the author s original. Browning was born on 7 May 1812 in Camberwell, a middle class suburb of London; he was the only son of Robert Browning, a clerk in the Bank of England, and a devoutly religious German Scotch mother, Sarah Anna Wiedemann Browning. He had a sister, Sarianna, who like her parents was devoted to her poet brother. While Mrs. Browning s piety and love of music are frequently cited as important influences on the poet s development, his father s scholarly interests and unusual educational practices may have been equally ... • 42. Native Americans And Western Culture Native Americans have an intimate relationship with the Earth that is very unusual to western culture. For centuries before the arrival of Europeans, Native Americans lived off the land in North America, without claiming ownership or creating massive environmental destruction. They have both a deep love and fear for the power of nature, and try to live as one with the environment. Because of this common value among tribes, Native Americans are often stereotyped as being the first environmentalists, which is not entirely true. Native Americans do value and treasure the environment, but not always in the way western environmentalists imagen. Modern environmentalists grew up in a different culture, one that embraces development and progress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Positives between Environmentalists and Native Americans There is good reason why environmentalists so often associate themselves with Native Americans. Indigenous culture has a deep reverence for the environment that is not prevalent in western culture. Using nature for hunting, gathering, and planting required religious procedures and ceremonies in order for Native Americans to receive permission to use resources (Cornell, 1985). Because of this cautious respect, environmentalists and Native Americans often agree with each other on environmental issues, including fracking, mining, and land exploitation. Modern native american activists more frequently are from western tribes, including Crow, Lakota, and Cheyenne, because they were in contact with European capitalist culture later than eastern tribes, so they have held on to their old traditions (Cornell, 1985). Environmentalists and Native Americans also overlap in their concern for the people and future generations. When these two groups are separate, they have weaker political power, but when they join forces they can have a much stronger impact. One survey compared the beliefs of Native American hunters and majority culture (western) hunters, to see if Native Americans truly respect the environment more. The first part of the survey asked multiple Native American hunters and western hunters to rank multiple plant and animal species in importance. Of the 17 Native ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Power In The Shawshank Redemption The Shawshank Redemption Throughout human society there has always been a struggle for justice, equality, and control. While these concepts are ideal and socially acceptable to most people they can also lead to a state of being in power for other people. In the film The Shawshank Redemption, the filmmaker achieves a connection with the audience by showing reoccurring instances of the struggle for power between the protagonist Andy Dufresne and Warden Samuel Norton through social status and the desire for perceived justice, equality and control. In order to understand the fight for power in the film it is important to be aware of the social classes that form inside the prison walls. As the film opens Andy Dufresne is one of the newest inmates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being very secretive Andy starts transferring some of the Warden s money into a fake account he set up for when he gets out of Shawshank. Similarly as to how The Shawshank Redemption portrays social trends, people tend to find themselves drawn into different classes or groups in the real world, which an underlying theme that people can apply to their own lives.
