The Battle Against The Persian Empire
Alexander the Great is one of the most celebrated military leaders in history. His campaigns against
the Persian Empire began in 336 BC, when he and the Macedonian army crossed the Hellespont and
began their invasion of Asia Minor. The Macedonians were victorious in their first major engagement
against the Persians at the Battle of Granicus River in 334 BC. Less than a year later, in 333 BC,
Alexander faced the Persian army again at the Battle of Issus, this time led personally by King Darius
III. Alexander s victory at Issus set the stage for the final battle against the Persian Empire at
Gaugamela. On October 1, 331 BC, Alexander and his army met the Persian Empire in a final decisive
battle that determined who would rule Asia. Contemporary historians place the strength of the
Macedonian army at approximately 40,000 47,000 soldiers, while the Persian army was approximately
50,000 100,000 soldiers strong. While the Persians had the numerical advantage, their troops were
largely comprised of conscripts from across their empire that possessed little stomach to fight. In
contrast, the Macedonian army was made up of hardened professional soldiers. The battle occurred on
carefully chosen terrain that was well suited to give the Persian army ample maneuver space,
something they had lacked at Issus. Overall, the Persian army had a significant advantage at the onset
of the battle in terms of terrain and numbers. Alexander achieved a decisive victory against the odds at

Eukaryotic Compare And Contrast
Compare and contrast of eukaryotic and prokaryotic transcriptions
1 Overview
In both eukaryote and prokaryote, transcription is the first step for a gene to be expressed and also
highly regulated process by several distinct steps. Therefore, misregulation of transcription caused by
mutations in transcriptional regulatory sequences or factors can lead to variety of diseases. In order to
start transcription process, multi subunit RNA polymerase (RNAP) from both bacterial and eukaryotic
cells require various factors. Some of them are regulatory sequence specific DNA binding proteins
(activators or repressors) that can specifically recognize and bind to DNA at the promoter. These
factors are recruited specifically in stepwise to help RNAP along

Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Franchise
In the modern world of entrepreneurship, motivated men and women are faced with the task of either
creating their own business or taking on the marks and practices of another existing brand. The latter
is franchising, and it presents a host of benefits and possible disadvantages to the aspiring inquirer. A
franchise, by definition, is a binding, legal contract that enables the rights, marks, and other notable
elements of a given brand, referred to as the franchisor, to be used by a second party the franchisee
(What is Franchising?, n.d.). Further expanding the opportunities available to new and veteran
entrepreneurs is that franchises come in two distinctly different types: product distribution franchises
and business format franchises. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is also prudent to consider that the franchise fee can be indicative of the level of trust. The amount
of trust a franchisor hold with their franchisees can, at times, mitigate overall costs involved, lowering
the risk for prospective franchisees (Herz, Hutzinger, Seferagic, Winsperger, 2016). To illustrate this,
the initial franchise fee is lowered for existing franchisees and those seeking a successive contractual
term. Furthermore, an excess of trust is shown on behalf of the SHOPPE COMPANY, as one would
imagine the initial fee ($10,000) would outsize the secondary ($20,000) to lower the risk of delinquent
payments and ensure the commitment of the applicant.
Additional costs are required over the lifespan of the franchisee outlet, and are left to the discretion of
the franchisor. Royalty payments and advertising fees are commonplace in franchise agreements, and
are unsurprisingly present here. The SHOPPE COMPANY requires a royalty payment of 4% of
weekly gross profits, which are to be reported every Monday (Sample Franchise Agreement, 2006,
p.11). Advertising fees present themselves as both GENERAL MARKETING CONTRIBUTIONS
(GMC) and LOCAL MARKETING CONTRIBUTIONS (LMC). 1/12th of the required annual GMC
(never less than $3,000) is to be paid every month, while the LMC amounts to only 1% of weekly
gross profits (pp. 13 14). Establishing fees and

Exercising Social Responsibility
1. What is your company s strategy for exercising social responsibility and being a good corporate
citizen? We try to be good corporate citizens; we do this by offering a certain percentage of our
earnings to charitable organizations. We also try to increase wages and employee incentives for each
plant. Another way we try to be socially responsible is by the type of material we use to create our
shoes. Our company also uses recycled packaging and boxing as well as contributes to energy
efficiency initiatives. We also encourage our employees to practice good ethical standards by
enforcing ethical training and workforce diversity programs for all our employees.

We do not try to cut corners when it comes to making and distributing our products and we also offer
employees incentives and good salaries based on the region they work in. 5. Is there anything that any
of your competitors are doing that you consider as shady or unethical? It seems like all of our
competitors are making ethical choices. All companies have high image ratings so they are also
enforcing social responsibility programs and strategies as well. 6. Is it unethical or at least socially
irresponsible for a company to avoid conducting its business in a manner in an environmentally
sustainable manner? Why or why not? It is unethical or at least socially irresponsible for a company to
avoid conducting its business in a manner in an environmentally sustainable manner because it is not
beneficial to society. Society only benefits if companies conduct their business in ways that are aimed
at giving back to people and the community so companies should operate their business in a way that
is environmentally sustainable. Therefore, if a company chooses not to operate in a manner that is at
the best interest of society it would be unethical or at least socially irresponsible for them to do

Examples Of Manhood In Macbeth
Men in today society are seen as dominant and independent creatures, most are shaped by their past
and their actions. All will Sin, others more Moral than others, no man can escape it, their sins and guilt
will continue to follow them until their death, their sleep will never come as it will be always
unpleasant for darkness will consume them in a gulp. In William Shakespeare tragedy, Macbeth
demonstrates how murder can effect ones manhood and their sanity, as he himself begins with a
feminine stance until he outmanned his own wife, Macbeth is sane at the start but ends as feral with no
image of God. But in the end, his own manhood caused him to fall from grace and instead caused a
freefall into an abyss of sin and betrayal, this was punishment ... Show more content on

In the beginning of Macbeth, Macbeth himself is perceived as a weak man with little power for his
and his wife is seen as more dominant and in control with the situations. I am afraid to think what I
have done: look ont I dare not. (Shakespeare II.II.LI LIV). Once Macbeth murders Duncan, he begins
to panic and regrets his action; Macbeth is too ashamed of himself showing weakness as his
personality instead of dominance. This, I will argue, is precisely the psychological configuration of
Macbeth, where dangerous female presences like love, nature, mother, are given embodiment in Lady
Macbeth and the witches, and where Macbeth wields the bloody axe in an attempt to escape dominion
over them. (Adelman Pg. XXXVIII). Macbeth tries to please Lady Macbeth by showing his manhood
by gaining power, killing Duncan was a sign of dominance, that he is not weak and indecisive. But
Macbeth begins to breakdown as he comes to the realization of his actions and begins to question
himself, for he has committed it to please his wife and to become a

The Ancient Egyptian Revolution And The Religious Services
For nothing irrational or fabulous or prompted by superstition, as some believe, was embodied in the
religious services, but ideas which either had moral and necessary causes or were not devoid of
historical or physical plausibility (De Iside et Osiride. Plutarch. 8.353e). The Ancient Egyptians
craving for Ma at over Isfet is most prevalent in this perception, with that being said the irrational as
well as the fabulous have no reason to exist in the Egyptians, or any, ordered world, thus allowing the
creation of the essentiality of sensible reasons for events of calamity, such as those of plague and
disease; the calendars of lucky and unlucky days being a primary example of the contradictory effort.
It could be thought that the calendars of lucky and unlucky days are just indicators of pure
superstition, but the Ancient Egyptians did not see it that way, therefore this thought cannot work in
this example. Henceforth, it may be that the Egyptians saw the epagomenal days as outstandingly
wicked since their prominence was that of being called the five days in addition to the year ,
disrupting the order the calendar had of being twelve thirty day months. For the duration of the
epagomenal days, the Ancient Egyptians assumed that time, neheh, remained stagnant and fearing that
djet, best described by J. Assmann as being the unchanging continuation of that which is completed ,
might persist evermore, thus forever upsetting Ma at, unless particular rituals were performed.

The Freudian Slip Theory
Introduction
Freudian slip theory was originally created by Sigmund Freud. He was an Austrian neurologist and
was better known as the founder of psychoanalysis (1856 1939). Psychoanalysis can be defined as a
set of psychological theories which includes the Freudian slip theory. He believed that everyone
possess an unconscious mind, feelings, desires and memories in their lifetime. It is to be said that
peoples will bring their unconscious content on their mind to their conscious awareness and people
will be able to experience catharsis and gain insight into their current state of mind. (Cherry, What is
Psychoanalysis?, 2016)
Freud s theory of slips of the tongue and pen Sigmund Freud theory is formed based on peoples brings
the unconscious thoughts to conscious self. Freudian slip is the Hint of the Unconscious. (Cherry,
What is a Freudian Slip?, 2015) A Freudian slip also known as a parapraxis, is an error of speech and
memory or physical action which Freud stated was a result of interference of self own
unconsciousness wish, desire, conflict or train of thought. Freud believed errors of all types were
revealing. It acted like a defense mechanisms and errors come in many varieties. Freudian ... Show

The Theme Of Madness In Shakespeare, By William Shakespeare
Madness can be defined as the state of mental delusion/ mentally ill or showing extremely
foolish/eccentric behavior which begins with anger. The incorporation of madness in literature has
been a long standing tradition and can be encountered in these three works: King Lear by William
Shakespeare where he tells the story about King Lear whose madness has been promoted by his two
daughters, Regan and Goneril, Daddy by Sylvia Plath, where she reveals her anguish at her father s
death, she also discloses an eccentric behavior of attempting a suicide, and Medea by Euripides, where
we can encounter madness through the actions of Medea after being spurned by her husband Jason.
Insanity occupies a central place in these pieces of literature and ... Show more content on

King Lear slowly starts to descend in the complexity of insanity and his first sign of madness can be
seen through this quote ...Look look, a mouse! Peace, peace; this piece of toasted cheese will do
it...OH, well flown, bird! (Act IV.6. 88 91). Over time, he starts to realize that he made himself fall
into this trap and Regan and Goneril are the reason for his madness and lastly, he learns to conquer his
madness; however, it leads to a misfortune. On the other hand, Edgar, the son of Gloucester pretends
to be a madman and decides to live the life of a beggar due to Edmund evil intentions (Act 3, Scene
4). In this scenario, Edgar is able to save and live his life better even if the world considers him insane.
Edgar as a character symbolizes madness the most in King Lear. His loss of identity as a noble can be
seen as a form of madness. Obsession is a form of insanity that can be discovered in Daddy by Sylvia
Plath where the author shows hatred towards her own obsession with her dead father. With the use of
literary devices, she expresses her emotion towards the male figures in her life causes of her insanity.
Plath faces rejection from the society and from her family which leads to her insanity. An example of
her cutting off from the society can be seen in lines 69 70, The black telephone s off at the root, The
voices just can t work through. Due to her obsession towards her father, she tried to commit

Housing Bubble
According to Wikipedia a housing bubble is a type of economic bubble that occurs periodically in
local or global real estate markets. It is characterized by rapid increases in valuations of real property
such as housing until they reach unsustainable levels and then decline. Four years into the housing
bubble downturn, much of the country remains hopelessly confused about what happened, why it
happened and who is to blame. In my research paper I will try and demonstrate what a housing bubble
is, some of the reasons for the bubble, was it preventable, how it kept growing, how it burst and how it
has affected our economy. By definition a housing bubble is a temporary condition caused by
unjustified speculation in the housing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other scholars have emphasized the sharp deterioration in lending standards as contributing to the rise
in housing prices as well as the importance of changes to the mortgage market institutional structure.
Other explanations of the bubble have been demand side explanations, meaning that the bubble was
caused by excessive consumer demand for housing. One leading explanation argues that the bubble
was the result of irrational demand encouraged by a belief that housing prices could only move
upwards. Other research points to the fundamentals of housing markets, particularly population
growth, placing upward pressures on housing prices in markets with inelastic housing supply, thereby
explaining some of the geographic variation in the housing bubble. None of these explanations,
however, is capable of fully explaining the housing bubble. From 1997 to 2006 nominal U.S. housing
prices rose 188%. By mid 2009, however, housing prices had fallen by 33% from peak. As the United
States attempts to rebuild its housing finance system, it is of paramount importance to understand what
caused the housing bubble. Until we understand how and why the housing bubble occurred, we cannot
be certain that a reconstructed housing finance system will not again produce such a devastating
bubble. As you can see there are numerous theories and explanations for the bubble. Without getting

BOOK REVIEW
Lifelong learning in the Global Knowledge Economy: Challenge for Developing Countries Lifelong
learning is becoming necessary in many countries and it is more than just education and training
beyond formal schooling. This book indicated that a lifelong learning framework encompasses
learning throughout the lifecycle, form early childhood to retirement, and in different learning
environments, formal, nonformal, and informal. This report represents the World Bank s first attempt
to lay out an analytical framework for understanding the challenges of developing a lifelong learning
system. This book, which is as well as a report presenting lifelong learning in the global knowledge
economy: challenges for developing countries, explores the challenges to education and training
system that the knowledge economy presents. It outlines policy options for addressing these
challenges and developing viable systems of lifelong learning in developing countries and countries
with transition economies. This book addresses 4 questions: 1, what does a national education and
training system, including its formal and nonformal components, need to do to support knowledge
based economic growth? 2, how can developing countries and countries with transition economies
promote lifelong learning, and what challenges do they face in doing so? 3, given limited resources,
what type of governance framework promotes lifelong learning for people in general and

The effects of Lead Nitrate contamination on the plant Brassica rapa

Date: October 24, 2016

Abstract
In my biology class we conducted an experiment to determine if there was a direct correlation
between the concentration of lead levels in soil and the effect it has on plant synthesis and plant
height. The specimen used in the experiment is a species of plant, Brassica rapa. Seeds of B. rapa were
careful planted within every cell of a cubical that was filled with six different concentrations of lead
which was our treatment group and the control was the cubical with no lead soil in it. Plant height and
temperature were recorded with a thermostat and a mm ruler. The results show that lead concentration
does not have a relationship with plant height except in concentration of 100 mg/kg and 2000 mg/kg.
During this three week experiment, the mean of over a hundred students plant heights were recorded
and all the student s plants showed similar results meaning lead nitrate concentrations in soil does not
affect the growth.

Cultural Appropriation Of The United States
It has become one of the leading issues especially in the United States in the past few years. In the
world today, many people are witless as to what is cultural appropriation. Cultural appropriation
defines as when one culture adopts an element of another culture. (Uwujaren 9/30/13) When it comes
to Cultural appropriation a lot of the South Asian culture get appropriated. Being a South Asian myself
I feel obligated to let people know.
There are many examples of cultural appropriation today, such as henna tattoos, bindi s, sports team
names, and even clothes. These cultures or traditions have become a fad for people, especially in
America. People who are within the culture tend to get offended when their culture is made into a fad.
There are many arguments in newspapers, blogs, and articles that are against cultural appropriation. I,
myself have come upon many posts on Tumblr.com that have to do with Cultural appropriation.
Huffingtompost.com also has multiple articles on the subject.
One of the cultures that has been appropriated is Henna. Henna tattoos also known as mehndi have
become a sort of fashion in America for the past year. One can get henna tattoos applied anywhere at
any time. Yet the majority of Americans who go to carnivals, theme parks, and rodeos have no idea
where henna originates from and what it is actually meant for. Henna tattoos originated from
subcontinent India before Pakistan. (Parmer 11/13) It is meant to be put on during happy occasions

James And The Giant Peach Analysis
James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl is a classic children s novel that intells the exciting story of
a young orphan boy named James. James lives a lonely and depressing life with his two cruel and
abusive aunts. His life is completely transformed as an old man approaches him in his backyard and
gives him magical green pebbles. After James accidentally drops these magical pebbles into the
ground, one of the peaches from the tree planted in his backyard begins to grow to a massive scale.
James then enters the peach and begins his journey with all the personified insects that are already in
the peach. This light hearted children s novel by Roald Dahl has drastically impacted my life in the
most profound ways.
Roald Dahl was born on 13th of September 1916, in Llandaff, South Wales. Dahl attended Llandaff
Cathedral School as a young child, but due to his misbehavior and his mother s husband s wishes he
later transferred to St. Peter s, a British boarding school (A E Networks Television). The school s strict
rules and limitations caused for Dahl lively and imaginative youngster was restless and ached for
adventure (A E Networks Television). After graduating in 1932, against his mother s wishes he moved
to Africa and started working at a Shell Oil Company. Dahl continued to become a WWII pilot in

Dress Codes And School Uniforms
Is there anything more embarrassing than being dress coded at school? Enforcing a dress code among
children is unfair because it not only discriminates against people but it destroys someone s whole day.
Dress codes and school uniforms are meant to increase student achievement and make everyone equal
but instead it only hurts people. Most school dress codes are unnecessary and are sexist. Enforcing
dress codes is suppose to boost student achievement but instead is racist, sexist and unnecessary.
Schools should take into consideration their student s feelings before they establish rules for dressing.
Forcing school uniforms are more likely upon people of different races compared to people who are

In Georgia, 37 percent of students are black, but they account for 67 percent of suspensions and 64
percent of expulsions, according to federal data, (French and Bloom). Since Black and Hispanic
students are more likely to have to wear school uniforms, they encounter more discipline from adults.
White students do not have as much discipline because they are less likely to have to wear uniforms.
People of different races will most likely have to be punished more than people who are White
because more people who are Black have to wear uniforms than people who are White. Overall,
enforcing a dress code or forcing to wear school uniforms is a racial issue because people who are not
White are more likely to have to wear school uniforms than people who are White.
Secondly, most dress codes that are enforced are so extreme and unnecessary. Children are suspended

support for a friend battling cancer, because she d violated her school s dress code banning shaved
heads, (Hoevel). Dress codes are so extreme that even a shaved head is not appropriate for some
schools. When students just want to show awareness of cancer and other diseases, school s discipline

Roeg uses situational montage to essentuate the severity of a situation. When Thomas faints on the
elevator, Mary Lou must frantically rush the old school elevator to the 5th floor where Thomas is
staying in the hotel. Roeg jumps from a shot of Mary moving the elevator dial, looking up at the floor
count, and looking at Thomas to make sure he is ok. This rapid editing can be traced back to Godard
using this technique to essentuate the shooting of a police officer where Godard goes in on a close up
of Michael, his arm, his gun barrel, and finally the trigger. In Godard s case he left out important
information in that incidence, did the cop die or where did he get shot. For Roeg, he uses this
technique to put us in Mary Lou s frantic but caring mindset. Much like most of the early
experimentations of the French Wave, concepts are improved upon in later re experimentations of the
concept. The two starting sequences of both Breathless and The Man who Fell to Earth run parallel in
regards to intention and execution. When Roeg wants to establish that an alien has landed on earth, he
uses rapid cuts between the earth, a lonely lake, and NASA footage of a space ship launch to show this
arrival in the world that he has created. The same concept is used on Michael by Godard when
Michael s reckless driving is shown through the cross cutting of cars passing by and the demeanor of
Michael in the car. The time that is lost between the edits is salvaged within the imagination of the
viewer. David Jenkins declares when speaking about The Man who Fell to

Dante And The Road Of Humanism
Dante and the Road to Humanism During the Renaissance, the ideology of humanism became
extremely popular. After the black plague people presumed that God had abandoned them. As a result,
they began to search for their own answers through observation and experimentation; this method was
called empiricism. Through this, man began to place himself at the center of the universe instead of
God. Individuals began to embrace their own talents and spend less time worrying about the next life
and more living in the current one. Humanism was also developed from a desire to re live the
Classical time period, or the golden age; therefore, the humanistic education consisted of studies of
Greek, Latin, art, music and philosophy. This contemporary way of thinking inspired many
philosophers and writers. Throughout Dante s work he emphasizes the concept of humanism, and it is
this work that influenced many other philosophers including Petrarch and Boccaccio. Dante Alighieri
was born in 1265 in Florence, Italy. Dante was an Italian poet, prose writer, literary theorist, moral
philosopher, and political thinker. In the thirteenth century, groups called the Guelfs and the
Ghibellines arose. The Guelfs supported the pope, and around 1290 they divided into two groups, the
White and Black Guelfs. Dante was closer to the White party which was composed of merchants and
traders; the Black group consisted of banking families. In 1301 Dante left Florence on a mission to

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Driverless Cars
1. Consumer Behavior Models
Consumer behavior eventually leads to the decision or choice between alternatives. In most cases it is
a decision whether to purchase, consume or use a service. The process of this decision making is
rather complex and it is influenced by, other than the price factor, the psychology of the consumers,
their socio cultural environment the past experiences. The consumer decision making can be modelled
as a system operating with an Input or stimuli, the actual decision making Process which then results
in a reaction or Output (Schiffman. L.G, Kanuk. L)
Inputs
Typical external influences for instance, marketing attempts, price or socio cultural factors like family,
social class, culture etc., form the inputs to the decision making process. ... Show more content on

Several manufactures like Tesla, Mercedes etc., have already demonstrated their autonomous driving
technology and many other companies aim to roll out vehicles with driverless capabilities by 2020.
While it s still pretty early to forecast how autonomous vehicles will impact the lives of humans, there
are some clear advantages and disadvantages of driver less cars.
According to the NHTSA (2013), driverless cars are defined as:
Those in which operation of the vehicle occurs without direct driver input to control the steering,
acceleration, and braking and are designed so that the driver is not expected to constantly monitor the
roadway while operating in self driving mode .
One direct inference from the definition is a significant freeing of time and efforts for the driver which
could be potentially used for other value added activities. Indirect inference would be also a better
utilization of the civil infrastructure as a result of the advanced technology. While an obvious
disadvantage would be the cost of ownership, legal issues insurance in case of accidents. 6.1 Potential

Theme Of The Gilded Six Bits
In The Gilded Six Bits, Zora Neale Hurston uses several different techniques to characterize Joe and
Missie May, the main couple throughout the short story. Hurston utilizes her own background to
describe Joe and Missie May and their marriage. She additionally demonstrates their character
improvement through her writing styles and techniques, which indicate responses and reactions
between Joe and Missie May to develop their relationship. Hurston supports her character
development through her written work style, her characters dialect, and encounters experiences from
her own life to depict a feeling of reality to her characters identities.
While the story is set in the south, we can relate it to how marriage becomes more difficult due to the
background they come from. One theme identified throughout the story was the institution of
marriage. In the beginning, Missie May and Joe seem to have it all in spite of the fact that they are
poor. Hurston describes their home by stating that The fence and house were whitewashed. The porch
and steps scrubbed white, this shows us they had an easy way of interacting with one another by how
white symbolizes cleanness, peaceful and purity. Things start to become a little off, when a newcomer
Otis D. Slemmons comes into town. He comes in and threatens to ruin everything between Missie
May and Joe. Joe tells Missie May Ah wants you to be de first ladies to walk in dere and have some
set down. This is a form of their own regional dialect, the way they speak says much of their character
language between one another. Joe begins to realize that Slemmons wants to encounter Missie May as
his own. Joe then starts to admire Missie May and wants her to look sexually attractive towards
Slemmons only to show her off to him. As Joe and Missie May enter the ice cream parlor, she starts to
play the role of a trophy wife. At this point, the story takes a tragic turn down when Slemmons starts
to chase after her, but only promising money in exchange for sex. Analyzing Missie May as a
character, Slemmons explicated her appearances and rated her as thirty eight and two, by this we can
encounter how Missie May exposes herself as a fine lady. She wants to have a more luxurious life and

Summary Of Phaedo By Plato
In the book, Phaedo by Plato, he discusses the immortality and divinity of the soul, and uses the
philosophical theoria to prove that such a thing exists. Plato spends a lot of time trying to prove the
idea to his fellow philosophers the divinity of the soul. Yet, in the book In Defense of Philosophy by
Josef Pieper, he talks about how philosophy is not about finding an exact truth, but merely seeking to
get close enough to it. This shows a clear contradiction between Plato s belief that a soul is divine and
continues to live on and Pieper s thoughts on what true philosophy is, because he creates dialogue that
clearly shows influence of his religious background that takes away from the philosophical discourse.
It is due to this, Pieper would not agree with Plato in his interpretation on the divinity of the human
soul.
Plato uses Socrates Argument from Opposites to show that a living being cycles from being dead to
being alive, but this falls flat because we must rely on the idea that there is another realm for were the
dead souls must reside. Let s consider it, perhaps, in this way: do the souls of human beings exist in
Hades when they have died, or do they not? (Plato 17) This shows that their belief in an immortal soul
requires that one believe that there is the existence of a place called Hades, without any other
interpretation from either Socrates or Cebes. Piper would disagree with this idea because it relies on a
religious belief, which can be related to the idea of the modern Christian Philosopher. The following
reflections will nonetheless consider third only those situations in which the philosopher is also
explicitly a believer who openly accepts the truth of a sacred tradition and consciously accepts the
truth of a sacred tradition and consciously tries to be aware of it in his reasoning. (Pieper 112) Here
Pieper talks about how a philosopher must be careful of his faith and make sure it does not affect his
reasoning, which is what is happening to Socrates and Cebes as they reason their way through the
existence of the soul. They attribute a piece of their reasoning to a potentially mythical place that the
current Greek religion believes in, without considering if there are alternatives to such

Its function is to catalyse the hydrolysis of amylose and amylopectin to a mixture of products,
including maltose and dextrin, which are polysaccharides. Maltose consists of two alpha glucose
remains joined by 1,4 linkage; Dextrin is made up of several alpha glucose units joined by 1,4 and 1,6
linkages. Pullulanase, also known as debranching enzyme, hydrolysis the alpha 1,6 links at the
branching points in the polysaccharide. Commercial sources of these enzymes include bacteria and
fungi. Fungi amylases are used to clarify fruits juices, wines and beer by removing suspended starch.
In bread making for example addition of amylases can yield more sugars from the starch in flour and
barley grains, another commercial which is statue of import ants is the conversion of starch to sweet
glucose syrups which are used generally as sweeteners in food industry as well as in the bread making
and brewing industry. Altering the balance between amyloglucosidase and the fungi alpha amylase can
produce different proportions of glucose and maltose. A higher proportion of glucose is useful for
fermentation whereas higher maltose is more useful in preparation of jam and confectionary. The
Amylase Enzyme breaks down starch; which is a carbohydrate.

Adversarial System Vs Inquisitorial System
The adversarial system is seen to create fewer truths than it performs justice, and fewer truths than
performs the inquisitorial system. The adversarial system is portrayed by a neutral choice producer
who assesses conflicting performances by opponents to a disagreement, assesses the values of those
performances, and reduces a decision that issues a positive result to one party and a consistent
negative result to the other. Adversarial system consists of decisional accuracy, procedural justice and
the pursuit of truth and fairness (Sevier, 2014). An adversarial, accusatorial system is like a
competition in which the prosecution is opposed against the defense. The adversarial, accusatorial

There are three situations in which Failure or omission to act is only criminal which are (1) when there
is a statute that creates a legal duty to act, (2) when there is a contract that creates a legal duty to act,
or (3) when there is a special relationship between the parties that creates a legal duty to act. The mens
rea is the specific mental state of the defendant at the time of the crime; a guilty mind. There are two
types of mens rea that are recognized which are general intent and specific intent. There are four
different types of knowing, purposeful, reckless and negligent. The concurrence of an illegal act and a
culpable mental state offers the third essential feature of crime, for those crimes that involve mens rea.
Concurrence commands that the act and the mental state happen together in order for a crime to take
place. Concurrence and culpable mental state should be linked and they should transpire in the
appropriate order, mens rea followed by the act. The mens rea is the one that sets the act into motion.

Remebering Vimy Essay
Whether it be depictions of the noble savage or a red clad, horse riding Mountie patrolling the
northern nation, Canadians have a knack for creating a mythical element to their past. Deconstructing
national myths has become a burgeoning field of academic inquiry as evidenced by monographs such
as Daniel Francis in his book National Dreams: Myth, Memory, and Canadian History. A central event
in the Canadian consciousness, with much national sentiment attached to it, is that of Vimy Ridge. On
April 9, 2007 over thirty five hundred high school students from across Canada congregated at the
newly restored Canadian National Vimy Memorial near Vimy, France. Their presence marked the 90th
Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This essay examines the myth formation of Vimy Ridge in the English Canadian myth symbol
complex. Through an examination of the military achievements upon which the Vimy myth is based,
global and local views of the success at Vimy, the foundation of Vimy as national myth will be
examined. The cultural aftershock shown through the magnitude of published poetry and construction
of a National Monument, and how the Battle of Vimy Ridge is taught in English Canadian secondary
education systems will divulge an analyse of Vimy Ridge as an active part of the English Canadian
imagined community s myth symbol complex ninety years after its conception. Although among
Allied powers, the Battle of Vimy Ridge remains only a part of the much larger British offensive, the
Battle of Arras. For Canadians, however, Vimy is perpetuated through Canadian history as the
birthplace of English Canadian nationhood from a time when it lacked a strong global presence on the
international stage.
Before an examination of the perpetuation of Vimy as a national myth within Canadian society can
occur, the term myth itself must be clarified. Myth will neither be viewed as a pejorative or positive
term, nor as quaint stories or falsehoods. Rather, in accordance with the definition of myth provided
by Clarence Bolt, myths are deeply (often unconsciously) held beliefs and values that provide people

Different Styles Of Traditional Thai Ensembles
There are two different, traditional Thai ensembles. Neither type of ensemble has a specific name,
however, they can be easily differentiated by the different types of instruments they use. One type of
ensemble consists mainly of string and melodic percussion instruments (Morton, 1976). This same
ensemble is responsible for providing music for plays and other stage acts. The most well known style
of music that the string and melodic percussion ensembles would perform is Pi phat. This expression
of music is distinguishable by its fast, flashy tempo and unique instruments ( Music of Thailand ,
2013). Pi phat is audibly recognizable by the pinai, a shrill quadruple reed oboe like instrument which
is always accompanied by melodic percussion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The origin of xylophones can be traced back to Africa and several early Asian civilizations, but it is
has a Greek name that means wood sound ( Percussion Instruments , 2015). It was greatly used in
Thailand in folk music and traditional Thai music. Both traditional and folk Thai music share similar
characteristics; both use some of the same melodic percussion instruments, and among these
instruments are xylophones. Xylophones are melodic percussion instruments that consist of a series of
wooden bars graduated in length to produce the musical scale, supported by belts of straw or felt (
Xylophone , Merriam Webster). These instruments are traditionally played by striking the wooden
bars with two small wooden hammers.
In modern times, xylophones are used in ensembles around the world. A modern xylophone has its
wooden bars, or keys, arranged like the keys of the piano and attached to the bottom of the wooden
bars are metal tubes called resonators, where the sound vibrates. The resonators gives the xylophone
its bright, bell like sound ( Percussion Instruments , 2015). It is considered to have a soprano pitch due
to its shrill sound. In orchestras, xylophones are played with four mallets instead of the traditional two
mallet method (Cherrett, 2011). They are also played using mallets of other materials rather than the
traditional wooden hammers. Xylophones can be played with mallets of different hardnesses

Housing Is Categorized Under Basic Commodities
Housing is categorized under basic commodities. Despite the necessity associated with proper
housing, families and individuals all over the world continue to have trouble in affording proper
housing facilities. Affordable housing refers to a kind of accommodation that is suitable for the needs
of a range of very low to medium income families. Affordable housing should be priced so that these
households can be in a position to cater for their other basic living costs such as food, medical care,
clothing, education and transport. Housing is a combined product of land and buildings.
Accommodation bargain basement relays to an individuals capability to pay for their housing at a
given point in time. It is a multifarious issue brought about by labor markets and local housing as well
as larger macro economic, environmental and social forces. As citizens in Australia continue to
experience shortage of affordable housing, economics continue to debate on the necessity of
government intervention in the issue.
Housing affordability may result to stress in situations where people strain to meet the cost of simple
yet suitable houses. Naturally, people are supposed to spend a mere 20% of their income on housing.
However, people in Australia spend more than 40 percent of their income on housing. This means that
people do not retain enough money to cater for other basic needs such as medical, food and clothing.
The lack of affordable housing means that people experience poor living

Donald Trump Visual Analysis
Like, baby, baby, baby, oh I thought a Mexican wall would be fine, fine. As presidential elections
rapidly approaching, media s coverage of the political candidates has multiplied in the television

illustrations and cartoons to visually see the political disturbances between the media and the
republican party. Daryl Cagle, a political cartoonist, argues in his visual address, Trump The Media

The fuming elephant in a black suit behind the media is a political representation of the republican
party and their growing frustration for unfair treatment as far as garnering media attention. The
placement of Donald Trump directly oppose to the republican party reveals that Trump is not an
acceptable Republican candidate as symbolized by him being on the opposite side of the elephant.
Furthermore, in the cartoon, the color choice also convey a symbolic message to the viewers. For
instance, the color light violet represents inferiority and insignificance (Colour Affect). the elephant is
illustrated light violet as almost as he is bruised to show how he is unable to captivate the media s
attention. The color yellow like the taxicab dominates the picture to grab the attention of the viewers
and to reveal the center of the issue, which in this case is the media. Symbols are used to questions the
media s ethical stand and Donald Trump s political approach. Why is the media focused too much on
Trump s sensational tenets instead of questioning his economic plans and policies? The elephant s
displeasure and the media s excessive coverages unrelated to politics symbolize the political tension
and the media s ethical downfall. Rather than inquiring Trump about his future plans, the mass media
is more interested in Donald Trump disrespectful and misogynistic remarks. The media s improper
actions represent their loss of moral integrity and their crave for more controversial statements. In
Hindu culture, the sun symbolizes knowledge, truth, influence, and stability (Hinduwebsite). With this
in mind, the yellow curved text bubble around the mass media resembles the sun, which implies that
the media is a huge influence on the American people and that they provide

  • 2. The Battle Against The Persian Empire Alexander the Great is one of the most celebrated military leaders in history. His campaigns against the Persian Empire began in 336 BC, when he and the Macedonian army crossed the Hellespont and began their invasion of Asia Minor. The Macedonians were victorious in their first major engagement against the Persians at the Battle of Granicus River in 334 BC. Less than a year later, in 333 BC, Alexander faced the Persian army again at the Battle of Issus, this time led personally by King Darius III. Alexander s victory at Issus set the stage for the final battle against the Persian Empire at Gaugamela. On October 1, 331 BC, Alexander and his army met the Persian Empire in a final decisive battle that determined who would rule Asia. Contemporary historians place the strength of the Macedonian army at approximately 40,000 47,000 soldiers, while the Persian army was approximately 50,000 100,000 soldiers strong. While the Persians had the numerical advantage, their troops were largely comprised of conscripts from across their empire that possessed little stomach to fight. In contrast, the Macedonian army was made up of hardened professional soldiers. The battle occurred on carefully chosen terrain that was well suited to give the Persian army ample maneuver space, something they had lacked at Issus. Overall, the Persian army had a significant advantage at the onset of the battle in terms of terrain and numbers. Alexander achieved a decisive victory against the odds at ... Eukaryotic Compare And Contrast Compare and contrast of eukaryotic and prokaryotic transcriptions 1 Overview In both eukaryote and prokaryote, transcription is the first step for a gene to be expressed and also highly regulated process by several distinct steps. Therefore, misregulation of transcription caused by mutations in transcriptional regulatory sequences or factors can lead to variety of diseases. In order to start transcription process, multi subunit RNA polymerase (RNAP) from both bacterial and eukaryotic cells require various factors. Some of them are regulatory sequence specific DNA binding proteins (activators or repressors) that can specifically recognize and bind to DNA at the promoter. These factors are recruited specifically in stepwise to help RNAP along ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Franchise In the modern world of entrepreneurship, motivated men and women are faced with the task of either creating their own business or taking on the marks and practices of another existing brand. The latter is franchising, and it presents a host of benefits and possible disadvantages to the aspiring inquirer. A franchise, by definition, is a binding, legal contract that enables the rights, marks, and other notable elements of a given brand, referred to as the franchisor, to be used by a second party the franchisee (What is Franchising?, n.d.). Further expanding the opportunities available to new and veteran entrepreneurs is that franchises come in two distinctly different types: product distribution franchises and business format franchises. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is also prudent to consider that the franchise fee can be indicative of the level of trust. The amount of trust a franchisor hold with their franchisees can, at times, mitigate overall costs involved, lowering the risk for prospective franchisees (Herz, Hutzinger, Seferagic, Winsperger, 2016). To illustrate this, the initial franchise fee is lowered for existing franchisees and those seeking a successive contractual term. Furthermore, an excess of trust is shown on behalf of the SHOPPE COMPANY, as one would imagine the initial fee ($10,000) would outsize the secondary ($20,000) to lower the risk of delinquent payments and ensure the commitment of the applicant. Additional costs are required over the lifespan of the franchisee outlet, and are left to the discretion of the franchisor. Royalty payments and advertising fees are commonplace in franchise agreements, and are unsurprisingly present here. The SHOPPE COMPANY requires a royalty payment of 4% of weekly gross profits, which are to be reported every Monday (Sample Franchise Agreement, 2006, p.11). Advertising fees present themselves as both GENERAL MARKETING CONTRIBUTIONS (GMC) and LOCAL MARKETING CONTRIBUTIONS (LMC). 1/12th of the required annual GMC (never less than $3,000) is to be paid every month, while the LMC amounts to only 1% of weekly gross profits (pp. 13 14). It is unethical or at least socially irresponsible for a company to avoid conducting its business in a manner in an environmentally sustainable manner because it is not beneficial to society. Society only benefits if companies conduct their business in ways that are aimed at giving back to people and the community so companies should operate their business in a way that is environmentally sustainable. All will Sin, others more Moral than others, no man can escape it, their sins and guilt will continue to follow them until their death, their sleep will never come as it will be always unpleasant for darkness will consume them in a gulp. In William Shakespeare tragedy, Macbeth demonstrates how murder can effect ones manhood and their sanity, as he himself begins with a feminine stance until he outmanned his own wife, Macbeth is sane at the start but ends as feral with no image of God. In the beginning of Macbeth, Macbeth himself is perceived as a weak man with little power for his and his wife is seen as more dominant and in control with the situations. I am afraid to think what I have done: look ont I dare not. (Shakespeare II.II.LI LIV). Once Macbeth murders Duncan, he begins to panic and regrets his action; Macbeth is too ashamed of himself showing weakness as his personality instead of dominance. This, I will argue, is precisely the psychological configuration of Macbeth, where dangerous female presences like love, nature, mother, are given embodiment in Lady Macbeth and the witches, and where Macbeth wields the bloody axe in an attempt to escape dominion over them. (Adelman Pg. XXXVIII). Macbeth tries to please Lady Macbeth by showing his manhood by gaining power, killing Duncan was a sign of dominance, that he is not weak and indecisive. The Ancient Egyptian Revolution And The Religious Services For nothing irrational or fabulous or prompted by superstition, as some believe, was embodied in the religious services, but ideas which either had moral and necessary causes or were not devoid of historical or physical plausibility (De Iside et Osiride. Plutarch. 8.353e). The Ancient Egyptians craving for Ma at over Isfet is most prevalent in this perception, with that being said the irrational as well as the fabulous have no reason to exist in the Egyptians, or any, ordered world, thus allowing the creation of the essentiality of sensible reasons for events of calamity, such as those of plague and disease; the calendars of lucky and unlucky days being a primary example of the contradictory effort. It could be thought that the calendars of lucky and unlucky days are just indicators of pure superstition, but the Ancient Egyptians did not see it that way, therefore this thought cannot work in this example. Henceforth, it may be that the Egyptians saw the epagomenal days as outstandingly wicked since their prominence was that of being called the five days in addition to the year , disrupting the order the calendar had of being twelve thirty day months. For the duration of the epagomenal days, the Ancient Egyptians assumed that time, neheh, remained stagnant and fearing that djet, best described by J. Assmann as being the unchanging continuation of that which is completed , might persist evermore, thus forever upsetting Ma at, unless particular rituals were performed. ... He was an Austrian neurologist and was better known as the founder of psychoanalysis (1856 1939). Psychoanalysis can be defined as a set of psychological theories which includes the Freudian slip theory. He believed that everyone possess an unconscious mind, feelings, desires and memories in their lifetime. It is to be said that peoples will bring their unconscious content on their mind to their conscious awareness and people will be able to experience catharsis and gain insight into their current state of mind. The Theme Of Madness In Shakespeare, By William Shakespeare Madness can be defined as the state of mental delusion/ mentally ill or showing extremely foolish/eccentric behavior which begins with anger. The incorporation of madness in literature has been a long standing tradition and can be encountered in these three works: King Lear by William Shakespeare where he tells the story about King Lear whose madness has been promoted by his two daughters, Regan and Goneril, Daddy by Sylvia Plath, where she reveals her anguish at her father s death, she also discloses an eccentric behavior of attempting a suicide, and Medea by Euripides, where we can encounter madness through the actions of Medea after being spurned by her husband Jason. Peace, peace; this piece of toasted cheese will do it...OH, well flown, bird! (Act IV.6. 88 91). Over time, he starts to realize that he made himself fall into this trap and Regan and Goneril are the reason for his madness and lastly, he learns to conquer his madness; however, it leads to a misfortune. On the other hand, Edgar, the son of Gloucester pretends to be a madman and decides to live the life of a beggar due to Edmund evil intentions (Act 3, Scene 4). In this scenario, Edgar is able to save and live his life better even if the world considers him insane. Edgar as a character symbolizes madness the most in King Lear. His loss of identity as a noble can be seen as a form of madness. Obsession is a form of insanity that can be discovered in Daddy by Sylvia Plath where the author shows hatred towards her own obsession with her dead father. With the use of literary devices, she expresses her emotion towards the male figures in her life causes of her insanity. Plath faces rejection from the society and from her family which leads to her insanity. It is characterized by rapid increases in valuations of real property such as housing until they reach unsustainable levels and then decline. Four years into the housing bubble downturn, much of the country remains hopelessly confused about what happened, why it happened and who is to blame. Other scholars have emphasized the sharp deterioration in lending standards as contributing to the rise in housing prices as well as the importance of changes to the mortgage market institutional structure. Other explanations of the bubble have been demand side explanations, meaning that the bubble was caused by excessive consumer demand for housing. One leading explanation argues that the bubble was the result of irrational demand encouraged by a belief that housing prices could only move upwards. Other research points to the fundamentals of housing markets, particularly population growth, placing upward pressures on housing prices in markets with inelastic housing supply, thereby explaining some of the geographic variation in the housing bubble. None of these explanations, however, is capable of fully explaining the housing bubble. From 1997 to 2006 nominal U.S. housing prices rose 188%. By mid 2009, however, housing prices had fallen by 33% from peak. As the United States attempts to rebuild its housing finance system, it is of paramount importance to understand what caused the housing bubble. Tiller III, Corey Biology Department Birmingham Southern College Date: October 24, 2016 Teacher: Jennifer Kelly Abstract In my biology class we conducted an experiment to determine if there was a direct correlation between the concentration of lead levels in soil and the effect it has on plant synthesis and plant height. The specimen used in the experiment is a species of plant, Brassica rapa. Seeds of B. rapa were careful planted within every cell of a cubical that was filled with six different concentrations of lead which was our treatment group and the control was the cubical with no lead soil in it. Plant height and temperature were recorded with a thermostat and a mm ruler. The results show that lead concentration does not have a relationship with plant height except in concentration of 100 mg/kg and 2000 mg/kg. • 22. Analyzing The Film The Man Who Fell To Earth Watching The Man Who Fell to Earth gave me a familiar feeling upon first viewing. I was taken back to a time when a friend of mine, who is deep in knowledge of the cinematic medium, criticized Pulp Fiction stating that it was a shameless and terrible carbon copy of Breathless , Jean Luc Godard s medium redefining film released in 1960. I proceeded to watch Breathless and caught a drift for what he was talking about along with a growing intrigue within myself for the French New Wave. Upon viewing The Man Who Fell to Earth , I was taken back to Breathless and the techniques and concepts exhibited throughout that film and I understood why Breathless was such an inspirational film during it s time, as elements of Breathless and the French ... When Thomas faints on the elevator, Mary Lou must frantically rush the old school elevator to the 5th floor where Thomas is staying in the hotel. Roeg jumps from a shot of Mary moving the elevator dial, looking up at the floor count, and looking at Thomas to make sure he is ok. This rapid editing can be traced back to Godard using this technique to essentuate the shooting of a police officer where Godard goes in on a close up of Michael, his arm, his gun barrel, and finally the trigger. In Godard s case he left out important information in that incidence, did the cop die or where did he get shot. For Roeg, he uses this technique to put us in Mary Lou s frantic but caring mindset. Much like most of the early experimentations of the French Wave, concepts are improved upon in later re experimentations of the concept. The two starting sequences of both Breathless and The Man who Fell to Earth run parallel in regards to intention and execution. When Roeg wants to establish that an alien has landed on earth, he uses rapid cuts between the earth, a lonely lake, and NASA footage of a space ship launch to show this arrival in the world that he has created. The same concept is used on Michael by Godard when Michael s reckless driving is shown through the cross cutting of cars passing by and the demeanor of Michael in the car. • 23. Dante And The Road Of Humanism Dante and the Road to Humanism During the Renaissance, the ideology of humanism became extremely popular. After the black plague people presumed that God had abandoned them. As a result, they began to search for their own answers through observation and experimentation; this method was called empiricism. Through this, man began to place himself at the center of the universe instead of God. Individuals began to embrace their own talents and spend less time worrying about the next life and more living in the current one. Humanism was also developed from a desire to re live the Classical time period, or the golden age; therefore, the humanistic education consisted of studies of Greek, Latin, art, music and philosophy. This contemporary way of thinking inspired many philosophers and writers. Throughout Dante s work he emphasizes the concept of humanism, and it is this work that influenced many other philosophers including Petrarch and Boccaccio. Dante Alighieri was born in 1265 in Florence, Italy. Dante was an Italian poet, prose writer, literary theorist, moral philosopher, and political thinker. In the thirteenth century, groups called the Guelfs and the Ghibellines arose. The Guelfs supported the pope, and around 1290 they divided into two groups, the White and Black Guelfs. Dante was closer to the White party which was composed of merchants and traders; the Black group consisted of banking families. In 1301 Dante left Florence on a mission to gain more ... While it s still pretty early to forecast how autonomous vehicles will impact the lives of humans, there are some clear advantages and disadvantages of driver less cars. According to the NHTSA (2013), driverless cars are defined as: Those in which operation of the vehicle occurs without direct driver input to control the steering, acceleration, and braking and are designed so that the driver is not expected to constantly monitor the roadway while operating in self driving mode . One direct inference from the definition is a significant freeing of time and efforts for the driver which could be potentially used for other value added activities. Hurston utilizes her own background to describe Joe and Missie May and their marriage. She additionally demonstrates their character improvement through her writing styles and techniques, which indicate responses and reactions between Joe and Missie May to develop their relationship. Hurston supports her character development through her written work style, her characters dialect, and encounters experiences from her own life to depict a feeling of reality to her characters identities. While the story is set in the south, we can relate it to how marriage becomes more difficult due to the background they come from. One theme identified throughout the story was the institution of marriage. In the beginning, Missie May and Joe seem to have it all in spite of the fact that they are poor. Hurston describes their home by stating that The fence and house were whitewashed. The porch and steps scrubbed white, this shows us they had an easy way of interacting with one another by how white symbolizes cleanness, peaceful and purity. Things start to become a little off, when a newcomer Otis D. Slemmons comes into town. He comes in and threatens to ruin everything between Missie May and Joe. Joe tells Missie May Ah wants you to be de first ladies to walk in dere and have some set down. This is a form of their own regional dialect, the way they speak says much of their character language between one another. Joe begins to realize that Slemmons wants to encounter Missie May as his own. Joe then starts to admire Missie May and wants her to look sexually attractive towards Slemmons only to show her off to him. As Joe and Missie May enter the ice cream parlor, she starts to play the role of a trophy wife. At this point, the story takes a tragic turn down when Slemmons starts to chase after her, but only promising money in exchange for sex. • 26. Summary Of Phaedo By Plato In the book, Phaedo by Plato, he discusses the immortality and divinity of the soul, and uses the philosophical theoria to prove that such a thing exists. Plato spends a lot of time trying to prove the idea to his fellow philosophers the divinity of the soul. Yet, in the book In Defense of Philosophy by Josef Pieper, he talks about how philosophy is not about finding an exact truth, but merely seeking to get close enough to it. This shows a clear contradiction between Plato s belief that a soul is divine and continues to live on and Pieper s thoughts on what true philosophy is, because he creates dialogue that clearly shows influence of his religious background that takes away from the philosophical discourse. It is due to this, Pieper would not agree with Plato in his interpretation on the divinity of the human soul. Plato uses Socrates Argument from Opposites to show that a living being cycles from being dead to being alive, but this falls flat because we must rely on the idea that there is another realm for were the dead souls must reside. Let s consider it, perhaps, in this way: do the souls of human beings exist in Hades when they have died, or do they not? (Plato 17) This shows that their belief in an immortal soul requires that one believe that there is the existence of a place called Hades, without any other interpretation from either Socrates or Cebes. Piper would disagree with this idea because it relies on a religious belief, which can be related to the idea of the modern Christian Philosopher. The following reflections will nonetheless consider third only those situations in which the philosopher is also explicitly a believer who openly accepts the truth of a sacred tradition and consciously accepts the truth of a sacred tradition and consciously tries to be aware of it in his reasoning. (Pieper 112) Here Pieper talks about how a philosopher must be careful of his faith and make sure it does not affect his reasoning, which is what is happening to Socrates and Cebes as they reason their way through the existence of the soul. They attribute a piece of their reasoning to a potentially mythical place that the current Greek religion believes in, without considering if there are alternatives to such ... This essay examines the myth formation of Vimy Ridge in the English Canadian myth symbol complex. Through an examination of the military achievements upon which the Vimy myth is based, global and local views of the success at Vimy, the foundation of Vimy as national myth will be examined. The cultural aftershock shown through the magnitude of published poetry and construction of a National Monument, and how the Battle of Vimy Ridge is taught in English Canadian secondary education systems will divulge an analyse of Vimy Ridge as an active part of the English Canadian imagined community s myth symbol complex ninety years after its conception. Although among Allied powers, the Battle of Vimy Ridge remains only a part of the much larger British offensive, the Battle of Arras. For Canadians, however, Vimy is perpetuated through Canadian history as the birthplace of English Canadian nationhood from a time when it lacked a strong global presence on the international stage. Before an examination of the perpetuation of Vimy as a national myth within Canadian society can occur, the term myth itself must be clarified. The origin of xylophones can be traced back to Africa and several early Asian civilizations, but it is has a Greek name that means wood sound ( Percussion Instruments , 2015). It was greatly used in Thailand in folk music and traditional Thai music. Both traditional and folk Thai music share similar characteristics; both use some of the same melodic percussion instruments, and among these instruments are xylophones. Xylophones are melodic percussion instruments that consist of a series of wooden bars graduated in length to produce the musical scale, supported by belts of straw or felt ( Xylophone , Merriam Webster). These instruments are traditionally played by striking the wooden bars with two small wooden hammers. In modern times, xylophones are used in ensembles around the world. A modern xylophone has its wooden bars, or keys, arranged like the keys of the piano and attached to the bottom of the wooden bars are metal tubes called resonators, where the sound vibrates. The resonators gives the xylophone its bright, bell like sound ( Percussion Instruments , 2015). It is considered to have a soprano pitch due to its shrill sound. In orchestras, xylophones are played with four mallets instead of the traditional two mallet method (Cherrett, 2011).
