My Career At Loyola University Chicago
After a long eight months, I can now look back and say that I completed my first year of college. It is
safe to say that during that time, life was not the same as it was in high school. Many adjustments,
such as sacrifices and prioritizing had to be made. However, I think that those adjustments had made
me a more accountable student, but more ultimately a better rounded human being. As I am about to
enter my second year at Loyola, I am ready to tackle whatever challenges I may face. I personally feel
that I am still a planet s distance away from figuring out who I really am, but I think that as long as I
can keep being the best person I can be, I can accomplish what I want to do during my post collegiate
career. In this essay, I will talk about my undergraduate career at Loyola University Chicago,
emphasizing my field of study, college experience, and my career goals including the route I plan to
take to get there. My current major at Loyola Chicago is Health Systems Management otherwise
known as H.S.M. which as it implies, revolves around the health care industry. I was originally an
Economics major with the Liberal Arts and Sciences school. At the time, I thought that Economics
was the major for me because I really enjoyed the topic when I was in high school, and I was also into
business. I did well in both semesters; however, I was also interested in learning about the health care
business. I did not know that Loyola had a major focusing on health care until I talked

The Accidental Billionaires By Ben Mezrich
Facebook was created in 2004 on the Harvard University Campus by one of its own students: Mark
Zuckerberg. First restricted to students of Harvard s University, it is then opened to other American
universities before becoming accessible to all by September 2006. Since June 2015, 1.49 billion of
people are registered on this website. This social network is now part of everyday life for nearly one
fifth of the world population, it has redefined how we connect and communicate in the 21st century. It
is therefore normal that a movie was devoted to its creation and expansion. David Fincher, based on
the book by Ben Mezrich, The Accidental Billionaires , directed the movie.
The first scene takes place in a bar where Mark Zuckerberg, a young ... Show more content on

Returning into his room Mark sees his friend, Eduardo Saverin and tells him the idea of a project
called The Facebook , a social network site exclusively for Harvard students. He says it could boost
the popularity of Facemash. When the site is launched, the Winklevoss twins and their partner and
friend Narendra, are convinced Zuckerberg stole their idea. They want to sue Mark in justice.
The story, a fiction but based on a true story, is made of flashbacks, and in parallel shows the
development of Facebook and the two trials that oppose Mark Zuckerberg, firstly to the Winklevoss
twins, and secondly to Eduardo. This film emphasizes the creation of this start up that is Facebook,
with its successes and failures. We are going to discuss the beginning of Facebook as an innovative
start up, the role of Mark s different partners: Eduardo Saverin and Sean Parker in the development of
the website, and the depositions and testimony over the ownership and business dealing with various
lawsuits of Facebook from the Winklevoss twins.
A start up is a young company with high growth potential and which requires mostly a fundraiser.
That is what Facebook and the film is about, a brilliant idea, made possible by Mark Zuckerberg and a
fundraiser of $1,000. At the beginning Mark created Facemash to get over his break up with his
girlfriend, but it proved to be a smart concept. Shortly after

waking. The seven must stop her before the Feast of Spes which is when Gaea plans to have one of
them sacrificed. She needs the blood of a demigod so that she can rise. The demigods find out that
there is a way to cheat death, so they go on a quest traveling all over Greece on the Argo II to find the
ingredients for the Physician s cure: the poison of Pylos, the chained god s heartbeat in Sparta, and the
curse of Delos. They also learn that if they find Asclepius, the god of medicine, he will brew the cure
for them. He agreed. While the seven demigods were traveling throughout Greece, Reyna daughter of

Compare And Contrast The Renaissance And Reformation
Western civilization found its origins in the ancient world of Greece and Rome. Although these laid
the foundation for governmental, philosophical, and structural elements of the modern world, people s
day to day life remained the same. The Renaissance and Reformation transformed the mind of the
ancient man into the individualist of today. We will explore this transformation through three key
steps: the philosophy of the time, the condition of the Catholic Church, and finally, the cultures
response.
Art and humanism marked the core of the Renaissance. Together they changed at morphed society into
something different. The ancient world, and specifically the Middle Ages, kept the layman in poverty
and the military in the hands of the wealthy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pope Pius describes two swords, but says that, one sword ought to be subordinated to the other and
temporal authority, subjected to spiritual power... (Pope Pius) While we could speculate or debate his
analysis, the Catholic church seemed to mix earthly endeavors with heavenly standards. This
inconsistency tied Catholic rule and ideology together. When the lay people stood against the
authoritarian church, I had to stand against spiritualism as a whole. Thus marked the beginning of a
greater schism western civilization: the separation between the physical and the spiritual, thought and
emotion, the culture and the

Dr. Strange Love Conspiracy Theory
I must say that Dr. Strange Love is my favorite movie we have watched thus far.
There are many interesting aspects to this movie. First I found it interesting that the paranoid ultra
nationalist Brigadier General, Who orders the nuclear strike is named Jack D Ripper. When read and
when spoken the name sounds incredibly similar to serial killer Jack the Ripper. I truly don t think this
was coincidental. The movie was filmed at Shepperton Studios near London, Whitechapel , the
neighbor in which the serial killer mostly stalked is also in London. Perhaps this was Kubrick s way of
framing members of the military industrial complex during the Cold War as serial killers. Instead of
brandishing surgical knives, they are detonating nuclear weapons. This theory is furthered by the fact
that President Muffley refers to Ripper as a psychopath and repeatedly uses the term mass murder.
Furthermore, in a scene with Mandrake, Ripper states he denies women his essence. The physical
nature of sexual intercourse and his wariness of it, drives Ripper s irrational impulse to guard the
purity of his bodily fluids against ideological incursion. It seems that Ripper s conspiracy theory is
born of misogyny. This is intriguing because Jack the Ripper exclusively killed women involved in ...

its code (both foo and bar) in a mutually exclusive manner. The order in which the threads execute
does not matter. Ans: This is a classical critical section problem, and we basically need a mutex lock
here. Recall that a semaphore with initial value of 1 can be used identically to a mutex lock (since it
allows only 1 thread to be in the critical section at a time). So the solution is as follows. Declare a
global semaphore: semaphore sem=1; Code for thread i: wait(sem); foo(i); bar(i); signal(sem); (b) (12
pts) Have each thread execute foo in a mutually exclusive manner, but allow upto 5 of them to execute
bar concurrently. The order in which the threads execute does not matter. Ans: Here, executing foo is
again a classical critical section problem, that can be solved similar to part (a). However, executing
bar allows multiple threads to be in the critical section, and this can be achieved by initializing the

Evolution Of Anger

The Evolution of an Emotion to Which I Know as Anger
Born with a tabula rasa, or blank slate, emotions are experienced and learned from birth to old age. In
my case I had found a consistent and hugely developed emotion had been anger, from first expressing
and understanding the emotion, I learned much about it through adolescents and its many combining
purposes. Through the limbic system we are more likely to remember things that are emotional, the
hippocampus function being verbal memory and the amygdala being the emotional memories center,
and with the help of intersubjectivity to learn and understand emotions we can begin to understand
how anger was a major emotion to have developed memories and hold more pronounced and detailed

parents would explain I would not have to be angered by not being able to tie my shoes but to relax
and try again or ask for help. This was one way my parents had discouraged the development of my
emotion for anger. Through theory of mind, understanding others have minds as well and can also
experience emotions and their own thoughts helped my emotion of anger to develop better
understanding sheeting others agreed and making the cognitive connections to my own anger. Around
age 3 or 4 I had learned to defuse my anger and not show it because my parents discouraged me from
being angry, this is representative of masking emotions hiding my anger to learning how to socialize.

The Importance Of Uniformity
I was asked to choose a piece of art, book, or musical that impacted me and how I view the world.
Personally the musical Wicked by Winne Holzman has taught me something very important, it has
become integral in the way I live my life. This lesson is to never let anyone dictate who you are, don t
let their opinion become yours. All too often in today s society people lose themselves trying to
become what the majority of people would have them be. Years ago I had a personal experience with
this, I spent so much time trying to fix something everyone told me was incorrect. I slowly became
consumed with trying to fit into the societal definition of what was considered normal that I lost
myself completely. So many people have fallen into the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sometimes this can sprout deeper issues, when I had a brush with this I decided that letting someone s
subjective version of normal decide who I strived to be was unhealthy and irrational. I ve learned that
unless you re comfortable with yourself you will never be comfortable, this inane chase after
normalcy can make you feel anxious or depressed. It can also make you feel wrong, wrong for
thinking the way you do or believing what you believe. Then I realized it doesn t matter what people
think of me, that felt amazing to finally understand. That all of these opinions and labels only applied
if I let them, they didn t matter unless I chose to use them myself. I realized other people don t have
the right to make me feel inferior to them, I found that after becoming comfortable with who I was I
didn t dread leaving my house. I was able to enjoy myself without being afraid of who might be
watching, I was able to be myself for the first time in a long time. What people in future generations
need to understand is that not everyone has the same thoughts on what is normal . We need to teach
the next generation to value themselves regardless of what other people think. We need to teach them
that putting someone else down because they are different is wrong, that it s okay not to fit in. What
we can t do is tell

Motivation Theories And Motivation Of Employee Motivation...
In organizations all across the world you will find management working diligently to enhance or
maintain productivity. There are many things that can affect productivity, some that are within our
control and some that are not. Employee motivation is something that can directly affect an
organizations production. It is no secret that un motivated employees equates to un productive
workers, but how can we combat this? In order to better understand this concept we will look at the
definition of employee motivation, some of the motivation theories and some motivation techniques
that could be useful in our organizations.
What is employee motivation?
Motivation is a word used quite often in many different scenarios, at work, home, the gym as well as
other places. In order to explore employee motivation, let us first define the term. According to
Spector (2012), motivation is generally defined as an internal state that induces a person to engage in
particular behaviors (p.194). This seems to be some sort of internal pressure that helps propel us
forward in whatever endeavor we might be undertaking at the time. As with any topic that has been
repetitively researched over the years, the word motivation has been defined in many different ways.
In 1981 Kleinginna and Kleinginna documented 140 different definitions of the word. For the purpose
of this research we will be focusing on work or employee motivation. A very good definition of this
concept was developed in 1981by a professor

Mitral Valve Prolapse
Mitral Valve Prolapse
Michele Tolliver
Body Systems, LRC Class #1

The flow of blood through the heart is controlled by four valves. If any are not working correctly,
blood cannot flow or be pumped effectively to the heart. The four valves are: the tricuspid, pulmonary
semilunar, mitral, and aortic semilunar. There are many abnormalities or defects that can affect their
operation and in this paper, I will discuss the most common one which is a mitral valve prolapse. A
valvular prolapse is an abnormal protrusion of a heart valve that causes the valve to not close
completely. It is also known as click murmur syndrome and Barlow s syndrome and is more prevalent
in women than men. It has a strong hereditary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The best treatments may vary but may include: * Exercise * Pain relievers * Daily low dose of aspirin
* Relaxation and stress reduction techniques * Avoidance of caffeine and other stimulants
The use of beta blockers to slow the heart rate may benefit patients who have episodes of tachycardia,
or rapid heartbeats, with the mitral valve prolapse. Unless it has progressed to something severe, the
patientwill probably not need treatment. If it has become severe, then the patient can benefit from
surgery to repair or replace the leaky valve. Although it sounds scary, it is a condition that can be
managed quite easily and the patient can live a normal lifestyle without any impairment or major
adjustment to your activities.

Herman Melville s Bartleby, the Scrivener Essay
Herman Melville s Bartleby, the Scrivener
The narrator states fairly early on in Herman Melville s Bartleby, the Scrivener that both he and
Bartleby are sons of Adam (55). The phrase plays on a double entendre, referring to both the Calvinist
Biblical Eden and to the view of America as the new Eden. Many recent critics have traced the biblical
aspects of this and other elemen ts of the story, claiming the character of Bartleby as a Christ figure,
and as such carries out the role of a redeemer.1 The story, however, is not Bartleby s, but rather the
narrator s. Bartleby is simultaneously a biography about a scriven er and an autobiography about an
entrepreneur, and Melville uses this narrative to attack the mythology previous ... Show more content

The new habits to be engendered on the new American scene were suggested by the image of a
radically new personality, the hero of the new adventure: an individual emancipated from history,
happily bereft of ancestry, untouched and undefiled by the usual inheritances of family and race; and
individual standing alone, self reliant and self propelling, ready to confront whatev er awaited him

The Importance Of Who Am I In My Life
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don t matter and those who matter

the weight it holds is great. In life, growing up and finding yourself go hand in hand. When I think of
who I am today at 17, many flashbacks of moments come to mind; people, places and experiences. All
of which, have impacted not only my character but my personality as well.
As long as I can remember my mom has referred to me as a bundle of energy and the center of

Representative Democracy Essay
The political system I would use for Viva la Vida Islands, is the Representative Democracy. I think it s
better to have citizens vote on representatives to represent them, rather than gathering everybody to
vote on one law. It would be extremely difficult to gather people to have them vote. It s easier to have
citizens vote for a leader that has a voice for them and that they trust. Using this system would be
easier and fairer making everyone have a voice in one way or another.
It s certainly better than a communism or a dictatorship. I chose this route since, I disagree with
communism. I don t believe that everybody should have the same pay as each other. It s certainly
unfair for a McDonalds worker to earn the same pay as a builder. I believe the harder you work, the
more pay you should earn! I also, don t think it s right how the government chooses your job and
makes your life decisions. The government shouldn t be that nosey and plan your life out. I also, don t
think a dictatorship is right. It s not an ideally fair system and it s ruled over by one person! Citizens
don t have a voice and I don t think it s fair. Dictatorships always fail anyways since someone always
out rules them! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Spirituality And Religion
The terms religion and spirituality can have both similarities and differences. Religion can be
explained as a set of beliefs that has structure and is practiced within a group or community. It
involves worshipping of superhuman beings, and often contains certain teachings in which its
believers/followers abide by and practice in everyday society. Although not all religions incorporate a
God , the Catholic Church is centred around the Triune God (God, Jesus, Holy Spirit). Catholic
teachings reflect the actions that God/Jesus displayed for the sake of humanity. Religious art, is
significant within a religion as it is considered to be a sacred material, in which provides proper

This art pictures Jesus as the Miracle Worker . This is explained in full in Matthew 12:22 33. This
story explains how Jesus sent the disciples by ship back to the other side of the Sea of Galilee after
they became caught in a wind storm. When the first saw Jesus on the water they were frightened. They
believed he was a ghost. Jesus said to them not to be afraid. In the Gospel of Matthew, Peter walked
on the water towards Jesus, but doubted himself and began to sink. Jesus reached out and caught him.
After Jesus entered the ship, the storm settled, and they arrived at land. Christian teachings consider
the story a miracle and displays the importance of faith. Peter didn t believe he could achieve what he
set out to do, and ultimately due to this he didn t succeed. This sacred story is another example of how
religion provides certain ways to live to benefit yourself and others. This interacts with spirituality as
these teachings allow people to develop personally and have a better state of mind. The main symbol
evident is the light that appears out of the darkness when Jesus appears on the surface of the water.
This symbol represents hope as Jesus has come to rescue them from the storm. The light also appeared
as Jesus calmed the storm and so the light would be perceived as a symbol for life and happiness as

Jane Eyre and Feminism
Charlotte Bronte s novel Jane Eyre embraces many feminist views in opposition to the Victorian
feminine ideal. Charlotte Bronte herself was among the first feminist writers of her time, and wrote
this book in order to send the message of feminism to a Victorian Age Society in which women were
looked upon as inferior and repressed by the society in which they lived. This novel embodies the
ideology of equality between a man and woman in marriage, as well as in society at large. As a
feminist writer, Charlotte Bronte created this novel to support and spread the idea of an independent
woman who works for herself, thinks for herself, and acts of her own accord.
Women of the Victorian era were repressed, and had little if any social stature. ... Show more content

These same characteristics are seen again during the time she works for Mr. Rochester. This is first
seen in chapter 13 and 14 during her first days knowing Rochester. He treats her in a condescending
manner, and is quite rude and disrespectful, insulting her piano playing, art, knowledge, and even her
looks. In many ways he treats her as he would treat one of his servants. Jane is fully aware of
Rochester s arrogance, finding him to be quite unpleasant. Jane replies to him with wit and sometimes
sarcasm, refusing to give into his insulting attacks. One example is her response to one of Rochester s
questions Now ma am, am I a fool? She replies far from it, sir. You would perhaps think me rude if I
inquired in return whether you are a philanthropist? (Bronte, 134) Jane, being assertive as she is,
makes it very clear to Rochester that she will not be treated as a servant.
I don t think sir, that you have the a right to command me, merely because you are older than I, or
because you have seen more of the world than I have; your claim to superiority depends on the use
you have made to your time and experience. (136)

unique relationship, and Rochester treats Jane increasingly as an equal as it progresses. In the

production of sports equipment was supplemented by the production of sports wear, the aim being to

While Benetton Sportssystem was still in connection with its original business, in the 1990s Benetton

Amsterdam By Ian Mcewan Analysis
In Amsterdam by Ian McEwan the moral choice is not necessarily a conspicuous one. Throughout the
novel doing what is moral is clouded by the characters selfishness or what they presume to be
selflessness. Friendship, politics and media are typically associated with the more ambiguous areas in
life. In Amsterdam, the intricacies of these topics are made even more complex by the Clive Linley s
inward conflicts. The complexities of morality and ambition are revealed through McEwan s
employment of imagery and the striking characterization of Clive Linley. To begin with, McEwan s
use of imagery is quite powerful as one is in enveloped into Clive Linley s environment and inward
thoughts as he ventures through the mountains. Clive is hoping to find the theme for his final
symphony while being surrounded by nature. Linley strives to produce a symphony with the spiritual
weight of Beethoven s Ode to joy(McEwan). However, while on his quest he begins to feel
apprehensive about the colossal emptiness and even the rock mass above the valley starts resembling a
long frown set in stone (McEwan). As Linley continues his journey the nature that was supposed to
spark genius hinders his creative process by causing him to feel that his mission was pointless. Linley
begins questioning if focusing on his last symphony is the right choice for him to make or if he is just
using it as a tool to distract him from a fear of death. Linley s nihilistic reflection can make one doubt

Jackson Pollock s The Deep
The Deep was painted by Jackson Pollock in 1953 and was mostly done with black and white, which
he considered the essential colors. There are some pecks of yellow and light blue throughout the
canvas. The painting was huge, 5 X7 , and was painted with oil and enamel on canvas. Pollock would
paint this size canvas by putting it on the floor and placing one leg on it while he painted. Pollock used
a drip method which consisted of pouring paint on the canvas and dripping paint onto it with sticks
and brushes. Pollock s most famous paintings were created during the drip period from 1947 to 1950.

His life changed overnight after a publication in Life magazine in 1949. There was a four page article
on him and his paintings in which he was asked if he was the greatest living painter in the United
States. As his fame grew, some began calling him a fraud and he began to question his own work and
had to have his wife tell him which paintings were good. In the 1950 s Pollock began assigning
numbers and dates rather than names to his paintings, as he considered symbolic titles misleading.
During this period he abandoned the drip method and painted in black and white only. He was not
successful with these changes and had showings in which no paintings were sold. He became very
depressed and returned to drinking very heavily as he had done many times before. His marriage
deteriorated to the point his wife returned to Paris to give him some time to work out his problems. He

Gender Inequality In Sheryl Sandberg s Lean In
Sheryl Sandberg s book Lean In tries to argue and persuade women that the best way to change gender
inequality starts with changing themselves. Her argument requires women to take the initiative and
change their own lives before bothering to transform the system and other outside forces. Sandberg is
not successful in her argument because her privilege and power in the workforce make it so her

On one hand, the way it is written makes the book very accessible for people to read and understand.
But it is really geared for white, corporate women. This leaves out the large chunk of the population
who are not white and/ or are not working in the corporate world, especially those who work
minimum wage jobs or jobs that are lower on the totem pole. This, in turn, undermines Sandberg s
argument and her assumption that her book will work for everyone.
Sandberg structures her book so she has a lot of personal anecdotes that she uses to try to get her point
across and to invoke pathos. However, her stories are not relatable: most of the population cannot
begin to imagine walking up to the founders of Google, addressing them by their first name, and
making demands that are acknowledged addressed, crying on Mark Zuckerberg s shoulder, or even
going to a school like Harvard (Sandberg 4, 88, 29). This in a way distances Sandberg from most of

Comparing Beowulf And Grendel
In all works of literature characters share traits and have differences. Some traits may be obvious such
as physical features or personalities. Some differences might simply be how other characters view
them. In Beowulf the characters have both, similar traits, and differences. The main characters
Beowulf and Grendel share one main trait, they are both well known but Beowulf has a heroic
reputation and Grendel has an eviler reputation. Beowulf is a young prince known throughout
Sweden. Grendel is a monster known throughout the land of Dane. Both characters share public
recognition even though they have two different reputations. Both characters are strong natured as

The Spanish Conquest Of Chile
Chile was beginning to be conquered by the Spanish in the mid 16th century. The conquest begun with
Diego de Almagro and Francisco Pizarro in 1536 and 1537 near the Maule River. They were searching
for gold and civilization, found neither, and returned to Peru. The first conquest happened in 1540
1541, under the command of Pedro de Valdivia, which founded Santiago. During this time, there were
at least 500,000 native people living in Chile (Britannica). Additionally, many of these cultures were
intertwined. In Northern Chile, groups relied on fishing and farming, and this area was successfully
taken under the influence of the expanding Inca empire. The Chincha and the Quechua who were apart

Fall Of Disco
The Rise and Fall of Disco
The birth of Disco had a huge influence on the American culture in the 1970s. It reached far beyond
music and into fashion, club culture, and film. Disco was created in Philadelphia and New York City
in the late 1960s and early 1970s, formed by people in reaction to the popularity of rock music and the
lack of progress of dance music in the late 60s. First heard in nightclubs for many minority groups
including Italians, Latinos, blacks, gays, and hippies, it was embraced by women, as well as men, and
many female entertainers came into fame because of disco music.
The enthusiastic dance moves and vivacious sound of Disco gave young people a reprieve from what

Premarital Agreements Between Tiger Woods And Elin Nordegren
Contrary to popular belief, premarital agreements are not solely for rich people and Hollywood stars.
In fact, In 2013, 63 percent of divorce attorneys surveyed by the American Academy of Matrimonial

(Grant) This notable increase stands behind the notion that upper class, middle class, and even lower

Language in Indian Writing in English
Language in Indian Writing in English
I am here to present on the topic Language in Indian Writing in English . Basically I will be talking
about the usage of language, the writing style, of blending language and culture and my analysis of it
in the text The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy.
The story of the Indian English novel is really the story of a changing India. There was a time when
education was a rare opportunity and speaking English was unnecessary. The stories were already
there in the myths, in the folklore and the umpteen languages and cultures that gossiped, conversed,
laughed and cried all over the subcontinent. India has always been a land of stories, the demarcation
between ritual and reality being very narrow. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The God of Small Things is not written in a sequential narrative style in which events unfold
chronologically. Instead, the novel is a patchwork of flashbacks and lengthy sidetracks that weave
together to tell the story of the Kochamma family. The main events of the novel are traced back
through the complex history of their causes, and memories are revealed as they relate to each other
thematically and as they might appear in Rahel s mind, the main protagonist of the story. Although the
narrative voice is omniscient, or all knowing, it is loosely grounded in Rahel s perspective, and all of
the episodes of the novel progress towards the key moments in Rahel s life. This non sequential
narrative style, which determines the form of the novel, is an extremely useful authorial tool. It allows
Roy a great deal of flexibility as she chooses which themes and events are most important to pursue.
The author is able to structure her book so as to build up to the ideas and events at the root of the
Kochamma family s experience.
One of the first elements of Roy s writing that readers confront as they begin this novel is her creative
vocabulary creative in the sense that she makes up new words. In the first pages, for

poverty, illness, overcrowding and crime compared to other city neighborhoods in 1930. The Harlem

Strict Dress Codes At School
Lift up your arms! My 6th grade teacher ordered. Unwillingly, I stood from my seat and raised my
arms. Naturally, my shirt raised along with it, exposing my midriff. Dresscoded. I followed her to a
drawer in the back of the classroom, the whole classroom staring, as she pulled out a long, oversized T
shirt with the school logo on it. It nearly swallowed me whole. The embarrassment of being in the
limelight made my cheeks hot and flushed. When I asked her what I was dress coded for, she said that
my shirt wasn t work appropriate . Irritated, I walked back to my desk and rejoined my friends to
continue our lunch. Suddenly, a boy in our class returned from a basketball game in the 90º weather
and pulled up a chair to our table. My entire body was sweating, and the long pants and t shirt I was
being forced to wear didn t help. He leaned back in his seat and stretched his arms behind his head.
His T shirt rose up and exposed his stomach, but my teacher said and did nothing. I envied how
attention wasn t being drawn to him because his stomach was exposed. I Instantly pointed out the
double standard. Why is my shirt considered provocative while his is considered work appropriate if

Benefits Of Being Vegetarianism
Why should humans be vegetarian?
More and more, some good quality meat is becoming very expensive. Since a can of chickpeas is less
expensive and easier to cook, a lot of Quebec College students decide to take the meat out of their
diet. Everyone should do like those people and be vegetarian for the benefits that it as for society and
the environment. This diet is good for the human health, it helps save the planet and it helps save the
animals.
First, there are many health benefits that comes with being vegetarian. In the Harvard Health
Publishing, the searchers describe the way that vegetarianism can help your body. Compared with
meat eaters, vegetarians tend to consume less saturated fat and cholesterol and more vitamins C and E,
dietary fiber, folic acid, potassium, magnesium, and phytochemicals (plant chemicals), such as
carotenoids and flavonoids. As a result, they re likely to have lower total and LDL (bad) cholesterol,
lower blood pressure, and lower body mass index (BMI), all of which are associated with longevity
and a reduced risk for many chronic diseases. The major diseases that vegetarianism can prevent are
heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes. In fact, vegetarians are 25% less likely to die from a heart
disease than meat eaters. This means that a lot of people could be saved with this diet. Personally, if I
could do anything to live longer and healthier, I would do it. Nowadays, we eat a lot of junk food, and

Advancements Of The Early Modern Period Medicine
It is difficult to decide whether the developments, inventions and discoveries of the Early Modern
Period contributed to European power or whether it contributed to European progress. The reason this
is, is because in the case of Europe, especially in this time period, power and progress seemed to go
hand in hand. In the case of discovery the countries that had the most power led the way in
discovering new land, it was this curiosity in expanding power that led to the progress of new worlds
and opportunities. The invention of the printing press contributed to providing knowledge and
therefore an aspect of power to people who did not have it beforehand and it was the progress of
medicines and sciences that ensured not only the power and superiority of European knowledge but
also the ability to progress to the next level of knowledge.
From the beginnings of the Early Modern Period medicine was essentially summed up in high
mortality rates and the notion that men and women were two completely different people
anatomically, treatments were largely herbal and the type of doctor you went to see depended on what
was wrong with you and if you could afford them . Attaining and preserving a state of health,
therefore, required balance, and that equilibrium was inherently elusive and easily forfeited .
However, while there was some progress in this field throughout the period it was not as drastic as one
would expect, the Galenic body of the four humours was still a dominant

Comparing The Differences Between Civil Law And Common Law...
This essay will compare the differences between civil law and common law systems. Firstly, it will
describe what laws and legal systems are and why they are important then how civil law and common
law systems were created and how they are used today, then the main differences between them.
Laws are rules that individuals and the state must follow if a law is broken sanctions will be brought
and an authority will apply the law. Legal systems are in place so that these laws can be effectively
made, applied and enforced. Main features which a legal system must have would include a way to
make law or legislature where in the United Kingdom parliament creates laws known as statutes. A
legal system also must include laws containing the way in which law breakers are investigated and a
way to interpret a broken law. Also, laws to cover a wide range of subjects including housing,
education, employment and many other aspects within society. H.L.A Hart (2012), cited in OU, (2017.
1.2) viewed legal systems as a union of primary and secondary rules. Primary laws as being contract,
criminal and employment and secondary laws described as about how the law is managed, how to
enforce, apply and interpret the law this theory is that any legal system needs both primary and
secondary rules.

Essay Lost Colony of Roanoke
For centuries, the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island has been a controversial issue. Many theories exist
that explain the disappearance of the colony. Some theories suggest that the colonists left the island to
live with friendly neighboring Indians. Others suggest that a hurricane wiped out the colony or that a
savage Indian tribe massacred them. The possibility of disease destroying them is also a debated topic.
However, evidence indicates that the men and women left behind on Roanoke Island did not die
because of massacre, disease, or starvation but went to live with the Croatoan Indians. In 1587 a group
of men, women, and children led by Sir John White set sail for America and landed on a North
Carolina island called Roanoke (Shirley ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, physical proof indicates that after John White left the colony to return to England, the
colonists intermarried with the Indians. According to David Beers Quinn, author of Set Fair for
Roanoke, the colonists and the Indians did intermarry (350). The colonists intermarrying with the
Indians would cause some of the offspring to have genetic traits unusual for Indians, such as blue eyes
or light colored hair. In his article about the lost colony, Scott Dawson writes that an explorer named
John Lawson discovered blue eyed Indians dressed in English apparel; Dawson also says that the
Indians claimed to have White descendants (6). Therefore, by making Manteo lord of Roanoke and
intermarrying with the Indians, the colonists proved their strong relationship with the Croatoans.
Upon his return, John White met with no indications of the deaths of the colonists. Linda Kramer
states that John White and the colonists agreed that in the event of leaving Roanoke, the colonists in a
noticeable location would engrave the name of the place to which they were departing and that an
engraving of a Maltese cross above the name of the location would signal leaving because of danger
(3). When White returned to the colony after three years of being absent, he discovered one of the
signals the colonists promised to engrave if they left. The Article Lost: An American Colony describes

Apart from territorial disputes, the SCS holds a critical geostrategic importance due to its strategic

Organized Greek Games, By William J. Baker
In the article Organized Greek Games , William J. Baker s goal is to educate readers on the differences
between the ancient Greek Olympic Games, and today s modern Olympic Games. William Baker not
only explains the physical aspects of the games , but the relationship between the Greek religion and
the Olympic games as well. William Baker s article follows his thesis well; which was, Virtually
everyone knows that the modern Olympics are patterned on the Olympic Games of ancient Greece,
yet few people have more than a hazy understanding of the original Olympics .(article,pp58) William
Baker wrote the Organized Greek Games in chronological order. An example of Baker writing the
article chronologically, is when William Baker describes the Greek game s schedule, and the events
that were planned for each day in order. the duration of the festival was set at five days, with only two

How Did The Enlightenment Influence The Latin American...
The Enlightenment was a movement which focused on logic and individualism instead of tradition
lasting between the 17th and 18th centuries. Ideas from Enlightenment influenced the uprising within
the American colonies, France, and Latin America throughout the 1700 s. Thomas Hobbes thought the
best government should have single ruler. John Locke thought that people should rule themselves
instead of kings. One of the main ideas is that people should be governed by reason, not by tradition.
The Enlightenment influenced the latin American revolution because people believed they could stand
against the government when they thought the government is doing wrong. People thought if they had

Professionalism In Corrections
The increase of professionalism in corrections facilities and among correction officers is critical and
not everyone is cut out to perform such tasks. Furthermore, historical flaws among correction
institutes and adapting to new ways in rehabilitating offenders have transitioned into a more
professional process than earlier correction institutes. One early reformer, Richard A. McGee, changed
the nature of corrections in California by upgrading the physical plants and staffing patterns, by
institutional research, and by developing alternatives to imprisonment , (Siegel Bartollas, 2014, p.
345). Furthermore, the small transition that McGee implemented was a new movement in taking

elements concoct a professional workplace among corrections as well as any law enforcement

Professionalism among correction facilities and staff members goes beyond the scope of rules and
guidelines on paper, as each staff member must treat an inmate with dignity and respect as well as

Mango Street Metaphors
Throughout the novella, The House On Mango Street, author Sandra Cisneros conveys Esperanza s
ideas and thoughts through her everyday surroundings. The metaphors in this bildungsroman exploit
Esperanza s maturity growth from start to finish. Without these metaphors, it would be a significant
challenge for the reader to comprehend and connect with Esperanza. Cisneros demonstrates the
themes of the evolution of thinking and personality through the metaphor of balloons, trees, and bums.
First of all, Cisneros showcases the metaphor of balloons as Esperanza s personal views about being
stuck in Mango Street. Cisneros makes an apparent connection to having some sense of shame with
being an occupant of Mango Street. Esperanza carries this burden of shame around with her, similar to
a red balloon, a balloon tied to an anchor (Cisneros 9). This develops an image in the reader s mind,
allowing them to see the balloon, free to move around, but with no range or hope of becoming
unattached to the anchor. Cisneros conveys that Esperanza is fed up with her temporary (5) life that
should only last for the time being (5). The reader learns that it is near impossible to simply leave the
neighborhood, and leave the shame behind with the neighborhood itself. Cisneros also chooses the
color red for Esperanza s balloon. This is significant because since red is a standout color, the shame
of Mango Street stands out to those who have not experienced anything similar to this type of
neighborhood. Such a burden singles out Esperanza in the crowd, making her unfavorably unique.
This includes being seen as the other half of society, that is unsuccessful and that barely has enough
money to make repairs to their own house. The red balloon describes the ideal and vision of freedom,
with several strict limitations and drawbacks that encompass the weight of the anchor.
Along with the metaphor of balloons, Cisneros employs a second non human object as a
representative of Esperanza s evolution of thinking. The metaphor of trees represents Esperanza s
progression of change and hope for the the future, no matter the circumstance. Appearing in both the
beginning and end of the novella, trees are the building blocks of who Esperanza

there has to become a distinction between the two. One could even say that perhaps they are the polar
opposites of each other as of late due to the constantly evolving nature of society. As it has been a

relieve this stress must be done judiciously, not only to avoid environmental problems such as
groundwater pollution and runoff, but also to keep the cost down on a limited and expensive resource.
Soil moisture sensors are often used for precision irrigation control purposes. However, soil moisture
sensors can only assess the degree of water deficit stress that is imposed to the plants, but not
necessarily the level of water deficit stress that is actually experienced by the plants (Sinclair and
Ludlow, 1985). An assessment of leaf water content, on the other hand, may yield more detailed
insight into the plant s actual physiological response to a certain degree of low soil moisture content,
and how water deficit stress is in fact experienced by the plant. Leaf water content is a key indicator of
plant health, vigor and photosynthetic efficiency (Harry, 2006). Accurate retrieval of plant water
content plays a crucial role in assessing drought risk (Bauer et al., 1986), select genotypes in breeding
for water stress (Munjal and Dhanda, 2005), predicting wildfire and monitoring the physiological
condition of vegetation (Peñuelas and Filella, 1998) and biomass (Cho et al., 2007; Mutanga et al.,
2005; Ullah et al., 2012c), while in the agriculture domain it helps in scheduling

Examples Of Oppression In V For Vendetta
Rebellion against Oppression in V for Vendetta V for Vendetta depicts the UK as a fascist police state
in the late 2030s. The movie is set post pandemic after most of the world had been torn apart by the St.
Mary s Virus . The Norsefire party lead by High Chancellor Adam Sutler runs the country. The people
are opposed and driven into conformity by fear. Undesirable individuals such as those who oppose the
Norsefire party, Muslims, and homosexuals, are imprisoned in concentration camps where they
undergo illegal genetic testing. The protagonist is V, a well spoken, masked vigilante. V is a survivor
of genetics testing whose goal is to lead a revolution against the oppressive High Chancellor within a
year. The movie is exhilarating as it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At first glance, V seems like a typical hero. He s tongue in cheek approach to crime fighting and his
dialogue quickly attracted me. V is shown originating from a concentration camp where his silhouette
steps out of a fire with screaming with burning vengeance. As more details of his past is revealed, he
draws more empathy. He seemed like a typical hero until I realized his campaign was growing
increasingly violent. V s actions grow darker as he continues to slaughter all his enemies. He doesn t
value preservation of life like typical heroes would, he is solely focused on abolishing the Norsefire
Party at all costs. The imprisonment and torture of Eve Hammond changed my view on V. I saw him
as evil. At the conclusion of the film, my view on V was conflicted. In one aspect he s fighting against
injustice but at the same time, he s blowing up buildings and hacking and slashing everyone. After
taking a holistic view, his actions violent but justified. In this case, I found the ends do justify the
means. Even though V s approach is borderline terroristic, he was able to nullify the Norsefire party,
liberate the people of his state and also rekindle Evey Hammond. V s complexity make him a very
interesting character to

Hence, the name of the company. It was through her that the founder had based his values and
principles which not only applied to him but also in the business. Through these principles, he realized
that the size of the market was too small, despite it being the practical option at that time. With bulks
of leftover supplies and equipment from his former business, Mr. Pedro decided to form another
option himself which is to venture into the toothpaste industry. With the help from a Japanese
company and $20,000, Hapee toothpaste was born.
In less than 20 years, the advances of Hapee into the market threatened the two giants, Colgate and

The Current International System As A Global Power
The current international system is fragmenting rapidly since the end of the Cold War. A lot of regions
in the world are still trying to find the balance of power in the international system, which the U.S.
often intervenes to provide its brand of global leadership . Some countries like China are emerging as
a global power since a few years ago. Subsequently, this will lead to a major threat to the U.S. status
as a global major power. The rise of power by China in the international scene signifies the
unpredictable nature of the international system. I would argue that the three most critical challenges
for the U.S. arising out of this environment are the future world globalization that will cause a conflict
between its domestic and foreign policy, the rise of China as a global power, and the ever globalization
of terrorism. I believe that the U.S. should be pragmatic in handling its foreign policy and handle each
situation independently without a fix doctrine in order to minimize the unintended consequences
produced by the globalization of the world. Firstly, the future world globalization provides a challenge
in U.S. foreign policy in striking a balance between its domestic need and foreign policy. This conflict
is visible in its aspiration to be energy independent while at the same time working with other
countries to mitigate the effect of climate change. The U.S. has been dependent on the middle for its
source of oil; about 17 percent of U.S. oil imports come from

Hamlet Critique
In Shakespeare s Hamlet, the complexities that come with actions and the psychological weight of the
pillar of human uncertainty are brought to light. This parallels both the thoughts and reflections shown
in a critique of the play by Harold Goddard and a radio program depicting a prisons production of
Hamlet, The American life: Act V. The critique by Goddard, simply dissects and divulges the
connections Goddard believes to be crucial to gain a deeper understanding of Hamlet. Act V, does not
simply speak on the text, rather it is a piece that follows a high security prison s production of Hamlet
s fifth act. The program mostly focuses on the inmates and how the production both gives them
purpose in their life and how the play emotionally touches them. These prisoners find themselves
relating to one of the main themes in Shakespeare s play, regret, on a level that was almost
inconceivable to them before their involvement in the production. Due to these prisoners being
incarcerated, every single day they are reminded of the things they did wrong and are limited
freedoms because of it. However, the production does not alleviate this pain or make them feel better
about themselves, but rather the opposite. Hamlet is dark in nature, and often propounds the idea of
yearning for the past and the vast complexity of choices. Most of these prisoners are now equipped
with one of the wisest realizations one could make; nothing is certain, all choices have possibles
consequences and

Ways People Lie
Yeah, sure, life is hard. Bad things happen. People say mean things. People lie. More bad things
happen. People die. They betray you. You feel alone. You say all the things you don t mean, and none
of the things you do. People talk about you, they make fun of you. You talk, you make fun of. You
never feel like you re good enough. You feel like nobody understands you and you just want all the
pain to go away. You feel like there s nothing to live for all your dreams have been crushed. You can
try to be perfect but you won t ever be. I m not trying to put you down, it s just the truth. And as
cliche, as it sounds, it s true. Nobody s perfect. You can try anything you want to make life less hard.

Prenatal Development Observation
On October 5, 2016, our Life Span Development class had the opportunity to observe the physical,
cognitive, and social development of Lewis, a four month old male infant. The observation was
conducted at Dordt College in room 1143 and the infant s parent consented to participate in the live
observation. Other members of Lewis family include his father, Tom, his mother, Ruth, and his two
older siblings who are five years old and three years old. Overall, Lewis was Ruth s third delivery, so
she had a great understanding of the prenatal development stage and the hardships that come along
with properly caring for a newborn. Ruth and her husband view each of their children as individual
blessings from God, and Lewis own journey and development ... Show more content on

In Santrock s (2014) textbook, Swiss child psychologist Jean Piaget explains many different aspects of
his theory of cognitive development. Some aspects that build Piaget s theory include object
permanence, assimilation, and accommodation. Object permanence is the understanding that objects
continue to exist even when they cannot be seen, heard, or touched (Santrock, 2014, p.94). Lewis did
not demonstrate object permanence when he was shown a toy and the toy was covered up. He
continued to look around the room and acted as if nothing was in front of him, thereby failing the
object permanence test. Lewis demonstrated Piaget s assimilation, which is when children use their
existing schemes to deal with new information or experiences (Santrock, 2014, p.93). Lewis
repeatedly kept putting new objects into his mouth, thereby demonstrating his existing scheme to deal
with new objects within his

U.s. And Global Economy
In 2008 the U.S. and global economy confronted one of the worst crisis in the history. These financial
crisis were considered the worst since the great depression in 1930 s. Several events took a place early
in 2007 which led to the economy crash, such as, the massive decrease in home prices in the United
States after it was significantly high. This decline in home mortgage market expanded rapidly causing
massive crisis in the whole United States financial sector (Bullard, Neely, and Wheelock 2 4). Those
crisis had dangerous effects on the stock banking industry, insurance firms, and Fannie Mae and
Freddie Mac, the two most important enterprises commissioned by the government to assist mortgage
lending, and some other mortgage lenders and financial service organizations. Those crisis generated a
decline in banks and financial associations trust of others, believing that they will never get paid back.
They simply stopped offering loans to people who needed money to buy a house or start a business,
which created a massive decline in the home mortgage market and the whole financial sector of the
United States (Havemann 1) There are number of issues which are believed to be the reason behind
the home mortgage market crisis that occurred in 2008. Firstly the housing bubble , the home
mortgage market problem which our economy is suffering from right now. It started with the bursting
of the U.S. housing bubble which started in 2001 and reached its highest in 2005. The

The Outbreak Of The War
The outbreak of the war prompted the formation of numerous women s voluntary organizations, and a
number of women worked to extend women s role. In 1942 defense ministers and others finally
considered to form WAAC to substitute men in the army. The bill took a year to pass. The WAAC only
lasted until 1943 because of the newly founded group WAC. The Women s Army Auxiliary Corps
benefited women s rights, how women got to be accepted in society , and most importantly what the
women did to help make the country stronger. Thanks to the honorable Edith Nourse Rogers a
congress women from Massachusetts introduced the first bill to establish a women s auxiliary in May
of 1941. This bill didn t get passed by congress until May of 1942. They ... Show more content on

They also made mutton broth, beef tea, potato pie, and duff pudding. They even served foods that are
familiar to us today like stew and even curry. The food that women cooked for men on the front line
was often better quality than the food that men ate back home. Men at war consumed 4,600 calories a
day. The women cookings in the canteens were told to make the food feed as many men as possible.
They had tricks to make the food more bulk so the men would be more full from smaller portions.
Women would dip bacon and other meats into oatmeal or flour to make it thicker and used other
techniques such as putting old bread into water and baking the bread again in the oven for an hour.
Many women were asked to undertake office jobs. Women received 24 shillings for unskilled work
but up to 48 shillings for jobs which required specific skills like shorthand or typing. One of the many
jobs that had been an unthinkable idea prior to the outbreak of the war was women working on cars.
By 1916 women had been given the task of repairing motor vehicles which had been broken down.
Later they started to work with mechanics to identify what problem it had. They built
rifles, bombs, ammunition and much more equipment needed. The WAAC opened up doors to jobs that
the women wouldn t usually have. They soon let African American women work in the factories and
science labs as well. This gave the women more confidence in and outside of the work place. Women

  • 2. My Career At Loyola University Chicago After a long eight months, I can now look back and say that I completed my first year of college. It is safe to say that during that time, life was not the same as it was in high school. Many adjustments, such as sacrifices and prioritizing had to be made. However, I think that those adjustments had made me a more accountable student, but more ultimately a better rounded human being. As I am about to enter my second year at Loyola, I am ready to tackle whatever challenges I may face. I personally feel that I am still a planet s distance away from figuring out who I really am, but I think that as long as I can keep being the best person I can be, I can accomplish what I want to do during my post collegiate career. In this essay, I will talk about my undergraduate career at Loyola University Chicago, emphasizing my field of study, college experience, and my career goals including the route I plan to take to get there. My current major at Loyola Chicago is Health Systems Management otherwise known as H.S.M. which as it implies, revolves around the health care industry. I was originally an Economics major with the Liberal Arts and Sciences school. At the time, I thought that Economics was the major for me because I really enjoyed the topic when I was in high school, and I was also into business. I did well in both semesters; however, I was also interested in learning about the health care business. I did not know that Loyola had a major focusing on health care until I talked ... Although these laid the foundation for governmental, philosophical, and structural elements of the modern world, people s day to day life remained the same. The Renaissance and Reformation transformed the mind of the ancient man into the individualist of today. We will explore this transformation through three key steps: the philosophy of the time, the condition of the Catholic Church, and finally, the cultures response. • 6. Dr. Strange Love Conspiracy Theory I must say that Dr. Strange Love is my favorite movie we have watched thus far. There are many interesting aspects to this movie. First I found it interesting that the paranoid ultra nationalist Brigadier General, Who orders the nuclear strike is named Jack D Ripper. When read and when spoken the name sounds incredibly similar to serial killer Jack the Ripper. I truly don t think this was coincidental. The movie was filmed at Shepperton Studios near London, Whitechapel , the neighbor in which the serial killer mostly stalked is also in London. Perhaps this was Kubrick s way of framing members of the military industrial complex during the Cold War as serial killers. Instead of brandishing surgical knives, they are detonating nuclear weapons. This theory is furthered by the fact that President Muffley refers to Ripper as a psychopath and repeatedly uses the term mass murder. Furthermore, in a scene with Mandrake, Ripper states he denies women his essence. The physical nature of sexual intercourse and his wariness of it, drives Ripper s irrational impulse to guard the purity of his bodily fluids against ideological incursion. It seems that Ripper s conspiracy theory is born of misogyny. This is intriguing because Jack the Ripper exclusively killed women involved in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The order in which the threads execute does not matter. Ans: This is a classical critical section problem, and we basically need a mutex lock here. Recall that a semaphore with initial value of 1 can be used identically to a mutex lock (since it allows only 1 thread to be in the critical section at a time). So the solution is as follows. Declare a global semaphore: semaphore sem=1; Code for thread i: wait(sem); foo(i); bar(i); signal(sem); (b) (12 pts) Have each thread execute foo in a mutually exclusive manner, but allow upto 5 of them to execute bar concurrently. All too often in today s society people lose themselves trying to become what the majority of people would have them be. It can also make you feel wrong, wrong for thinking the way you do or believing what you believe. Then I realized it doesn t matter what people think of me, that felt amazing to finally understand. There are many things that can affect productivity, some that are within our control and some that are not. Employee motivation is something that can directly affect an organizations production. It is no secret that un motivated employees equates to un productive workers, but how can we combat this? In order to better understand this concept we will look at the definition of employee motivation, some of the motivation theories and some motivation techniques that could be useful in our organizations. What is employee motivation? Motivation is a word used quite often in many different scenarios, at work, home, the gym as well as other places. In order to explore employee motivation, let us first define the term. According to Spector (2012), motivation is generally defined as an internal state that induces a person to engage in particular behaviors (p.194). This seems to be some sort of internal pressure that helps propel us forward in whatever endeavor we might be undertaking at the time. As with any topic that has been repetitively researched over the years, the word motivation has been defined in many different ways. In 1981 Kleinginna and Kleinginna documented 140 different definitions of the word. For the purpose of this research we will be focusing on work or employee motivation. A very good definition of this concept was developed in 1981by a professor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout the novel doing what is moral is clouded by the characters selfishness or what they presume to be selflessness. In Amsterdam, the intricacies of these topics are made even more complex by the Clive Linley s inward conflicts. In fact, In 2013, 63 percent of divorce attorneys surveyed by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers said they had seen an increase in the number of prenuptial agreements drafted in recent years. (Grant) This notable increase stands behind the notion that upper class, middle class, and even lower class couples have begun to gravitate towards entering into premarital agreements prior to committing themselves to their significant other through the act of marriage. • 25. Language in Indian Writing in English Language in Indian Writing in English I am here to present on the topic Language in Indian Writing in English . Basically I will be talking about the usage of language, the writing style, of blending language and culture and my analysis of it in the text The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. The story of the Indian English novel is really the story of a changing India. There was a time when education was a rare opportunity and speaking English was unnecessary. The stories were already there in the myths, in the folklore and the umpteen languages and cultures that gossiped, conversed, laughed and cried all over the subcontinent. India has always been a land of stories, the demarcation between ritual and reality being very narrow. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The God of Small Things is not written in a sequential narrative style in which events unfold chronologically. Instead, the novel is a patchwork of flashbacks and lengthy sidetracks that weave together to tell the story of the Kochamma family. The main events of the novel are traced back through the complex history of their causes, and memories are revealed as they relate to each other thematically and as they might appear in Rahel s mind, the main protagonist of the story. Although the narrative voice is omniscient, or all knowing, it is loosely grounded in Rahel s perspective, and all of the episodes of the novel progress towards the key moments in Rahel s life. This non sequential narrative style, which determines the form of the novel, is an extremely useful authorial tool. It allows Roy a great deal of flexibility as she chooses which themes and events are most important to pursue. The author is able to structure her book so as to build up to the ideas and events at the root of the Kochamma family s experience. One of the first elements of Roy s writing that readers confront as they begin this novel is her creative vocabulary creative in the sense that she makes up new words. In the first pages, for ... Naturally, my shirt raised along with it, exposing my midriff. Dresscoded. I followed her to a drawer in the back of the classroom, the whole classroom staring, as she pulled out a long, oversized T shirt with the school logo on it. It nearly swallowed me whole. The embarrassment of being in the limelight made my cheeks hot and flushed. When I asked her what I was dress coded for, she said that my shirt wasn t work appropriate . Irritated, I walked back to my desk and rejoined my friends to continue our lunch. Suddenly, a boy in our class returned from a basketball game in the 90º weather and pulled up a chair to our table. My entire body was sweating, and the long pants and t shirt I was being forced to wear didn t help. He leaned back in his seat and stretched his arms behind his head. • 29. Advancements Of The Early Modern Period Medicine It is difficult to decide whether the developments, inventions and discoveries of the Early Modern Period contributed to European power or whether it contributed to European progress. The reason this is, is because in the case of Europe, especially in this time period, power and progress seemed to go hand in hand. In the case of discovery the countries that had the most power led the way in discovering new land, it was this curiosity in expanding power that led to the progress of new worlds and opportunities. The invention of the printing press contributed to providing knowledge and therefore an aspect of power to people who did not have it beforehand and it was the progress of medicines and sciences that ensured not only the power and superiority of European knowledge but also the ability to progress to the next level of knowledge. From the beginnings of the Early Modern Period medicine was essentially summed up in high mortality rates and the notion that men and women were two completely different people anatomically, treatments were largely herbal and the type of doctor you went to see depended on what was wrong with you and if you could afford them . Attaining and preserving a state of health, therefore, required balance, and that equilibrium was inherently elusive and easily forfeited . Laws are rules that individuals and the state must follow if a law is broken sanctions will be brought and an authority will apply the law. Legal systems are in place so that these laws can be effectively made, applied and enforced. Some theories suggest that the colonists left the island to live with friendly neighboring Indians. Others suggest that a hurricane wiped out the colony or that a savage Indian tribe massacred them. The possibility of disease destroying them is also a debated topic. However, evidence indicates that the men and women left behind on Roanoke Island did not die because of massacre, disease, or starvation but went to live with the Croatoan Indians. According to David Beers Quinn, author of Set Fair for Roanoke, the colonists and the Indians did intermarry (350). The colonists intermarrying with the Indians would cause some of the offspring to have genetic traits unusual for Indians, such as blue eyes or light colored hair. In his article about the lost colony, Scott Dawson writes that an explorer named John Lawson discovered blue eyed Indians dressed in English apparel; Dawson also says that the Indians claimed to have White descendants (6). Therefore, by making Manteo lord of Roanoke and intermarrying with the Indians, the colonists proved their strong relationship with the Croatoans. Upon his return, John White met with no indications of the deaths of the colonists. Linda Kramer states that John White and the colonists agreed that in the event of leaving Roanoke, the colonists in a noticeable location would engrave the name of the place to which they were departing and that an engraving of a Maltese cross above the name of the location would signal leaving because of danger (3). • 37. Mango Street Metaphors Throughout the novella, The House On Mango Street, author Sandra Cisneros conveys Esperanza s ideas and thoughts through her everyday surroundings. The metaphors in this bildungsroman exploit Esperanza s maturity growth from start to finish. Without these metaphors, it would be a significant challenge for the reader to comprehend and connect with Esperanza. Cisneros demonstrates the themes of the evolution of thinking and personality through the metaphor of balloons, trees, and bums. First of all, Cisneros showcases the metaphor of balloons as Esperanza s personal views about being stuck in Mango Street. Cisneros makes an apparent connection to having some sense of shame with being an occupant of Mango Street. Esperanza carries this burden of shame around with her, similar to a red balloon, a balloon tied to an anchor (Cisneros 9). This develops an image in the reader s mind, allowing them to see the balloon, free to move around, but with no range or hope of becoming unattached to the anchor. Cisneros conveys that Esperanza is fed up with her temporary (5) life that should only last for the time being (5). The reader learns that it is near impossible to simply leave the neighborhood, and leave the shame behind with the neighborhood itself. Cisneros also chooses the color red for Esperanza s balloon. This is significant because since red is a standout color, the shame of Mango Street stands out to those who have not experienced anything similar to this type of neighborhood. Such a burden singles out Esperanza in the crowd, making her unfavorably unique. This includes being seen as the other half of society, that is unsuccessful and that barely has enough money to make repairs to their own house. The red balloon describes the ideal and vision of freedom, with several strict limitations and drawbacks that encompass the weight of the anchor. Along with the metaphor of balloons, Cisneros employs a second non human object as a representative of Esperanza s evolution of thinking. The metaphor of trees represents Esperanza s progression of change and hope for the the future, no matter the circumstance. Appearing in both the beginning and end of the novella, trees are the building blocks of who Esperanza ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. Plant Water Stress Is A Major Factor Affecting Crop Yield Plant water stress is a major factor affecting crop yield. With the ever increasing human population, there is a constant stress exerted on water resources (McGwire et al., 2000). So irrigation to avoid or relieve this stress must be done judiciously, not only to avoid environmental problems such as groundwater pollution and runoff, but also to keep the cost down on a limited and expensive resource. Soil moisture sensors are often used for precision irrigation control purposes. However, soil moisture sensors can only assess the degree of water deficit stress that is imposed to the plants, but not necessarily the level of water deficit stress that is actually experienced by the plants (Sinclair and Ludlow, 1985). An assessment of leaf water content, on the other hand, may yield more detailed insight into the plant s actual physiological response to a certain degree of low soil moisture content, and how water deficit stress is in fact experienced by the plant. Leaf water content is a key indicator of plant health, vigor and photosynthetic efficiency (Harry, 2006). Accurate retrieval of plant water content plays a crucial role in assessing drought risk (Bauer et al., 1986), select genotypes in breeding for water stress (Munjal and Dhanda, 2005), predicting wildfire and monitoring the physiological condition of vegetation (Peñuelas and Filella, 1998) and biomass (Cho et al., 2007; Mutanga et al., 2005; Ullah et al., 2012c), while in the agriculture domain it helps in scheduling ... I would argue that the three most critical challenges for the U.S. arising out of this environment are the future world globalization that will cause a conflict between its domestic and foreign policy, the rise of China as a global power, and the ever globalization of terrorism. I believe that the U.S. should be pragmatic in handling its foreign policy and handle each situation independently without a fix doctrine in order to minimize the unintended consequences produced by the globalization of the world. Firstly, the future world globalization provides a challenge in U.S. foreign policy in striking a balance between its domestic need and foreign policy. This conflict is visible in its aspiration to be energy independent while at the same time working with other countries to mitigate the effect of climate change. The U.S. has been dependent on the middle for its source of oil; about 17 percent of U.S. oil imports come from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Hamlet Critique In Shakespeare s Hamlet, the complexities that come with actions and the psychological weight of the pillar of human uncertainty are brought to light. This parallels both the thoughts and reflections shown in a critique of the play by Harold Goddard and a radio program depicting a prisons production of Hamlet, The American life: Act V. The critique by Goddard, simply dissects and divulges the connections Goddard believes to be crucial to gain a deeper understanding of Hamlet. Act V, does not simply speak on the text, rather it is a piece that follows a high security prison s production of Hamlet s fifth act. The program mostly focuses on the inmates and how the production both gives them purpose in their life and how the play emotionally touches them. These prisoners find themselves relating to one of the main themes in Shakespeare s play, regret, on a level that was almost inconceivable to them before their involvement in the production. Due to these prisoners being incarcerated, every single day they are reminded of the things they did wrong and are limited freedoms because of it. However, the production does not alleviate this pain or make them feel better about themselves, but rather the opposite. Hamlet is dark in nature, and often propounds the idea of yearning for the past and the vast complexity of choices. Most of these prisoners are now equipped with one of the wisest realizations one could make; nothing is certain, all choices have possibles consequences and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Ways People Lie Yeah, sure, life is hard. Bad things happen. People say mean things. People lie. More bad things happen. People die. They betray you. You feel alone. You say all the things you don t mean, and none of the things you do. People talk about you, they make fun of you. You talk, you make fun of. You never feel like you re good enough. You feel like nobody understands you and you just want all the pain to go away. You feel like there s nothing to live for all your dreams have been crushed. You can try to be perfect but you won t ever be. I m not trying to put you down, it s just the truth. And as cliche, as it sounds, it s true. Nobody s perfect. • 48. Prenatal Development Observation On October 5, 2016, our Life Span Development class had the opportunity to observe the physical, cognitive, and social development of Lewis, a four month old male infant. The observation was conducted at Dordt College in room 1143 and the infant s parent consented to participate in the live observation. Other members of Lewis family include his father, Tom, his mother, Ruth, and his two older siblings who are five years old and three years old. Overall, Lewis was Ruth s third delivery, so she had a great understanding of the prenatal development stage and the hardships that come along with properly caring for a newborn. Ruth and her husband view each of their children as individual blessings from God, and Lewis own journey and development ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Santrock s (2014) textbook, Swiss child psychologist Jean Piaget explains many different aspects of his theory of cognitive development. Some aspects that build Piaget s theory include object permanence, assimilation, and accommodation. Object permanence is the understanding that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be seen, heard, or touched (Santrock, 2014, p.94). Lewis did not demonstrate object permanence when he was shown a toy and the toy was covered up. He continued to look around the room and acted as if nothing was in front of him, thereby failing the object permanence test. Lewis demonstrated Piaget s assimilation, which is when children use their existing schemes to deal with new information or experiences (Santrock, 2014, p.93). Lewis repeatedly kept putting new objects into his mouth, thereby demonstrating his existing scheme to deal with new objects within his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. U.s. And Global Economy In 2008 the U.S. and global economy confronted one of the worst crisis in the history. These financial crisis were considered the worst since the great depression in 1930 s. Several events took a place early in 2007 which led to the economy crash, such as, the massive decrease in home prices in the United States after it was significantly high. This decline in home mortgage market expanded rapidly causing massive crisis in the whole United States financial sector (Bullard, Neely, and Wheelock 2 4). Those crisis had dangerous effects on the stock banking industry, insurance firms, and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two most important enterprises commissioned by the government to assist mortgage lending, and some other mortgage lenders and financial service organizations. Those crisis generated a decline in banks and financial associations trust of others, believing that they will never get paid back. They simply stopped offering loans to people who needed money to buy a house or start a business, which created a massive decline in the home mortgage market and the whole financial sector of the United States (Havemann 1) There are number of issues which are believed to be the reason behind the home mortgage market crisis that occurred in 2008. Firstly the housing bubble , the home mortgage market problem which our economy is suffering from right now. It started with the bursting of the U.S. housing bubble which started in 2001 and reached its highest in 2005. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. The Outbreak Of The War The outbreak of the war prompted the formation of numerous women s voluntary organizations, and a number of women worked to extend women s role. In 1942 defense ministers and others finally considered to form WAAC to substitute men in the army. The bill took a year to pass. The WAAC only lasted until 1943 because of the newly founded group WAC. The Women s Army Auxiliary Corps benefited women s rights, how women got to be accepted in society , and most importantly what the women did to help make the country stronger. Thanks to the honorable Edith Nourse Rogers a congress women from Massachusetts introduced the first bill to establish a women s auxiliary in May of 1941. This bill didn t get passed by congress until May of 1942. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They also made mutton broth, beef tea, potato pie, and duff pudding. They even served foods that are familiar to us today like stew and even curry. The food that women cooked for men on the front line was often better quality than the food that men ate back home. Men at war consumed 4,600 calories a day. The women cookings in the canteens were told to make the food feed as many men as possible. They had tricks to make the food more bulk so the men would be more full from smaller portions. Women would dip bacon and other meats into oatmeal or flour to make it thicker and used other techniques such as putting old bread into water and baking the bread again in the oven for an hour. Many women were asked to undertake office jobs. Women received 24 shillings for unskilled work but up to 48 shillings for jobs which required specific skills like shorthand or typing. One of the many jobs that had been an unthinkable idea prior to the outbreak of the war was women working on cars. By 1916 women had been given the task of repairing motor vehicles which had been broken down. Later they started to work with mechanics to identify what problem it had. They built rifles, bombs, ammunition and much more equipment needed. The WAAC opened up doors to jobs that the women wouldn t usually have. They soon let African American women work in the factories and science labs as well. This gave the women more confidence in and outside of the work place. Women became ...
