In On the Road, Sal and Dean have developed a friendship that not only reflects themes in the classic
but, pop culture as well. Two men travel all over and share their experiences amongst each other. All
throughout the novel, we as readers, discover that their unique bond transcends the normal version of
friendship. Becoming brothers and ultimately comrades. A sense of madness develops in Sal in the
end. Dean is ultimately the role model for Sal but, we see that Sal thinks otherwise towards the end of
the novel. Their travels bond them together in a way that ordinary friendships rarely do.

Not only do Dean s motivations and passions seem to appeal to Sal, Dean shows off a sense of being
young and a natural man . While it seems like nearly everyone else in the novel considers Dean to be
irresponsible, Sal assumes that Dean s erratic behavior proves that he is on a whole different level of
living. In the beginning of the novel, we learn that Dean was involved in sketchy ordeals. He was
arrested for stealing cars in Denver. Instead of looking down on Dean for his actions, Sal instead
believes his actions are just an attempt at searching for pure joy or raw happiness. While I viewed
Dean s behavior otherwise from a negative perspective, Kerouac merely suggests that Dean s actions
