Essay on The Innovators of American Literature
The Innovators of American Literature
From their critical assessments on how to improve themselves and to the American public that they
influenced by their writings, Jonathan Edwards and Benjamin Franklin illustrate American themes in
their personal narratives that quintessentially make part of American Literature. Although they lived in
different times during the early development of the United States of America and wrote for different
purposes, they share common themes. Their influence by their environment, individualism, proposals
for a better society, and events that affected their society generate from their writings. By analyzing

Benjamin Franklin did not hold his family beliefs of Christianity, but from his early environment, he
drew his relationship to God as a Deist. Franklin believed there is a Supreme Being and it is our job to
discover our own reality by reasoning. In his autobiography, he notes several epiphanies that changed
his lifestyle. For example, he regretted his leaving Miss Read for England without pursuing their
relationship further. He calls these regrets or wrongdoings Erratum (Lauter 788). The spirituality of
Franklin and Edwards is distinctive, and their writings reflect their experiences and growth of
improvement. Franklin as a Deist felt that he created his destiny by the decisions he made. His
autobiography illustrates his faults and accomplishments. This openness aims to the audience, the
American, in order for them to reevaluate themselves and improve from their weaknesses. Franklin
wanted Americans to become better Americans. With Edwards beliefs, he felt that god predestined
every man, and only the elect entered in the afterlife to heaven. He focuses his writing to the Christian
audience. His goal is to prepare them to become candidates to be elect and show how the elect can set
an example for the rest of the congregation. These men felt the responsibility to live a better life and
set the example for every man in their community. As individuals, they constantly contemplate and
self evaluate there

The Defense Mechanisms Of An Unconscious Level And Help...
Freud also believed that the ego exercises a range of defense mechanisms in order to deal with conflict
and problems in life. Defense mechanisms operate at an unconscious level and help relief unpleasant
feelings. There are many ego defense mechanisms, but a few examples of these include: regression,
denial, projection, displacement, repression, and sublimation. Regression is when a person is so
overwhelmed with their current issue that to protect themselves, they retreat to actions from an earlier
stage of development. Denial, as the name suggests, involves completely blocking out external events
from awareness. If a situation is too much to handle, the person denies that it s occurring. Projection is
the transfer of your own thoughts, motivations, desires, or emotions to another. Displacement is the
transfer of energy created by one object to another. Repression is occurs when a person buries
traumatic material into the unconscious. Sublimation is to satisfy an impulse with a substitute object in
a socially acceptable way. Although these defense mechanisms may seem unethical, they should also
sound somewhat familiar because we all partake in these. In fact, ego defenses are not necessarily
unhealthy, the lack of these defenses, or the inability to use them effectively can often lead to
problems in life. However, employing the defenses at the wrong time or overusing them, can be
equally destructive. Freud considered dreams to be the, royal road to the unconscious, as it

Mcmurphy Character Analysis
In the novel, One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest, written by Ken Kesey, it shadows the vast journey
and relationships of Randle McMurphy, A testy patient newly equipped into the psychiatric ward. The
second McMurphy came into the mental institution, he brought a sense of life and resilience to many
of the patients in the ward, it was inevitable the McMurphy was their leader and that he was gonna
change the dark cloud of personas surrounding the patents. As the story proceeds the members in the
ward get more in tune to McMurphy and his goals; the patients discover that he is their christ figure in
which showing them purpose in their life has been stolen away from society. McMurphy has affected
everyone in the ward and by Everyone means everyone: includi Ms. Ratched, also described as The
Big Nurse. Also the so called doctor, Doctor Spivey, and also a neighbor in the facility, chief bromden.
Despite the occurring events in the ward, it goes to show the powerful impact Mcmurphy had on
patients, from when he was transported to the ward til the time of his tragic death. Mcmurphy changed
more than their liveliness, he changed the mindset of their strongest critic, their self proclaimed image
of themselves. As the book comes to a close, Randle Mcmurphy whose image was only to cause havoc
and be psychotic patient in the beginning, by the end, he had actually been their saving grace. No
treatment nor pills could have done what Mcmurphy accomplished in the ward in a short period of

Afro-Brazilian Self-Identity in Brazil Essay
Over the past several decades there has been an increase, in Brazil, of people whom self identify as
being black or Afro Brazilian. What sparked the rise in these identities in Brazil? Was it possible
material and intellectual gains or, sparked from activism, or from other possible factors. The black
movement and affirmation of black identity came about much later in Brazil than in other countries
such as the United States. In my opinion the most important factors for the rise in these identities are
the material gains from the Quilombo Clause, the effects of affirmative action and quotas, as well as
social activism. One important reason for the increase in people identifying as black in Brazil is the
Quilombo Clause in the 1988 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For this community many, who did not prior, began to identify as black in order to qualify for the
Quilombo clause and get the material gain of land. Another factor that has led to the increase in people
identifying as black is affirmative action and the quota system. In the early 2000s Brazilian
government started to introduce affirmative action with a quota system. Quotas were added for
university admissions, government jobs, film and media, among other things. Affirmative action
policies also favored places that gave fair employment to blacks (Htun). The quota systems allow
blacks to have more opportunities for jobs and other intellectual gains. These gains are an incentive
for people, whom may not have prior, to begin to self identify as black in order to qualify for them. An
example of the quota system in use are the students in Brazil deciding whether or not to apply for the
university entrance exam under the quota system in the Wide Angle segment Brazil in Black and
White . In this segment they follow five kids who are taking the entrance exam. Two of these kids
decide to apply under the quota system (Wide Angle). One of these kids is a girl who is lighter skinned
and even though she is lighter she is applying under the quota system because it would increase her
chances of getting in. Both of the girls who decide to apply under the quota system do it because it
increases their chances

Harrison Bergeron
With imperfect eyes, total equality is hard to accomplish, especially with the notion of judgment and
competition constantly tempting otherwise. However, the high hope of peace and utopia in fulfillment
has always been a human thrive. Throughout history many men have attempted such perfection. Karl
Marx inquired the structure of communism through the Manifesto to ensure equality to a large socially
grouped people. According to Vonnegut, so did the U.S. government, in the year 2081. In the
outrageous short story of Harrison Bergeron , many historic achievements and ideas, like the
Manifesto, can closely parallel with that of the future outlook described by Vonnegut. Vonnegut shows

People are not forced to exercise so they could be equal with the stronger; rather the strong must equal
themselves by adding weights to make them weaker. This produces a sickly and depressing view of
society. The people themselves become lesser. After time, the dictatorship of downward living
becomes almost a way of live. George has been carrying this burden of forty seven pounds for so long
now around his neck that he says it does not bother him anymore. It has become apart of him. When
one has become desensitized from the situation, there is no hope for an uprising or change.
This is why the person who is in their mid thirties living with their parents all their life are most likely
not going to move out anytime soon on their own will. After a longer period of time, it almost
becomes comfortable and natural. To move on would actually be harder to accomplish.
This imagery shows the complete control on all aspects of life by the dictator. Any type of free thought
is immediately forgotten after sounds of automobiles crashing and shotguns going off. In reality, this
can be controlled by altering all aspects of the media, as a man takes over and impresses his will on
the given society, what he wishes to be let out to the public can be publicized; what he does not want
to be exposed, however, will not be publicized. (Compaine) The government in the story, with the
playing by the orchestra in an ill manner, does the same thing. The true beauty of music is hidden, and

Further the offering of foreign junkets and the purchasing of inspection certificates on the black

Those engaging in the black market are generally illegally. Finally, we have to stress that the above

Four Noble Truths and The Eightfold Path
Buddhism was different from other religions because it taught that liberation can be obtained from
suffering. This was based on our own lives and efforts. Stated in the book, Living Religions , The
Buddha taught that by understanding how we create suffering for ourselves we can become free
(Fisher 137). This was based on one s own involvement and effort to want happiness. This religion has
been spread throughout Asia and India because of these teachings, this religion became more popular
throughout the countries. For some people this religion was a way of life. After these teachings were
spread throughout the countries, it had developed and picked up other traditions. Buddhism is known
as a non theistic religion, which the traditions are built from other religions. Shakyamuni Buddha was
the founder of Buddhism, he was not a God. Buddha was an historical figure, the stories that have
been told have been passed on over time and not documented. His teachings were not written down
and documented until many years later after his death. The only way these were remembered and can
be trusted is because they were chanted by monks.
The Buddha had came up with Four Noble Truths to be his foundation to his teachings on obtaining
liberation and being free. The first Noble Truth was Life inevitably involves suffering, dissatisfaction,
and distress . This is about how

A Comparison Of Mein Kampf And White Man s Burden
Throughout both Adolf Hitler s political manifesto Mein Kampf and Rudyard Kipling s political
poem, White Man s Burden, they both have a few similarities and differences. In addition, these
similarities and differences might occur because of the context these individuals are writing. Mein
Kampf was completed in 1925 when he was awaiting in a jail cell. During this time, World War I had
just ended and the rise the fascism (an ideology that exalts the nation above the individual and calls
for a centralized government with a dictatorial leader, economic and social regimentation, and forcible
suppression of opposition) was coming forth in Italy s government. And at the same time, the
government in Germany was crumbling, and even before the German economy was a disaster. This
was created to help influence the Nazi Party and the intended audience being the Aryan race.
Throughout his manifesto he discusses his childhood and how he was most certainly born to be a
leader and a great leader at that. In the scheme of things, he portrays the fast that Aryans are the good
and trusted people and Jews cannot on the other hand be trusted at all. And on the harsher side says
that Jews should fall off the face of the earth.
On the other hand, White Man s Burden is a political poem and was created in 1899, around the same
time as Hilter s manifesto. During this time it was the end of the Spanish American war. Industrial
Revolution was going on and also colonization was occurring by most

Mercury Surface Research Paper
Mercury s surface is very rocky and covered in boulders and pulverized dust. The surface is also filled
with craters. The planet is a grey color. It is the smallest planet but very dense. The surface of Mercury
is very similar to the surface of the moon, but Mercury has more smooth plains. On Mercury you will
not find any clouds, dust storms, rivers or any other sign of weather. The planets magnetic field keeps
any winds away from it. Mercury has a mainly iron rich core. The planet will always be facing the sun
on one side, lighting up half of its surface. The side facing the sun is very hot, while the side not
facing the sun gets very cold. There is absolutely no sign of anything living on Mercury, and there has
not been any for a long time.
Venus atmosphere is made up of mostly carbon dioxide and some nitrogen. There are also traces of
carbon monoxide, argon, helium and neon on the planet. All of these elements make Venus
atmospheric pressure more then 90 percent heavier then the Earth. Closest to the surface is a layer of
carbon dioxide, which is covered by a layer of clouds which makes it hard to make out the planet. ...

Obstacles In David Oliver Relin s Three Cups Of Tea
Throughout David Oliver Relin s Three Cups of Tea, Greg Mortenson is faced with many obstacles
that interfere with his goals. He struggled with money, sickness, and stress. Mortenson began the
novel struggling to climb one of the toughest mountains and after many attempts to reach the peak, he
failed. He then stumbled upon a small village known as Korphe. Meeting the people of Korphe and
seeing their generosity showed Mortenson that failing the climb was not a true failure, but an act that
brought him to the Balti people. He saw their need for a school and wanted to help educate the next
generation of Baltis. If Mortenson had given up the first time he was faced with hardship, he would
never have accomplished all he did. Throughout the novel Mortenson endured many obstacles but
never gave up. As a child, Mortenson s father told him, If you believe in yourself, you can accomplish
anything. (Pg.38). Perseverance is a recurring theme throughout Three Cups of Tea and is portrayed
while Mortenson is climbing, raising money for the school, and building it. Climbing was a huge part

Secularism In Canada
On the international stage, Canada is often viewed as a secular and multicultural nation. Throughout
the history of the country, immigrants have come to Canada seeking a country which is accepting of
diversity in ethnicity, language, religion, and culture. Especially since the 1970s, when
multiculturalism was introduced by former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, thus becoming an official
policy of Canada, the diversity of the nation has increased greatly, (Wang Handy, 2014, p. 1561).
However, while Canada has become a more multicultural country as a whole, it has not necessarily
become more religiously pluralistic. In fact, it has been argued that Canada remains and will continue

Though Canada is officially a multicultural country, it has not resulted in complete religious toleration
or separation from Christian values and preference of the state. Through observation of the ongoing,
nationwide debate regarding sharia law, this can be seen. Since the early 2000s, a common area of
contention amongst Canadians has revolved around the debate of whether or not Sharia law should be
included in Ontario family tribunals. Sharia law is used to describe Islamic law as according to the
Qur an. Some Canadian Muslims believed that the addition of sharia law would help better integrate
Canadian Muslims into society. While previously, other forms of religious arbitration were permitted
in Ontario, the attempt to include Sharia law in the early 2000s played an vital role in the Ontario
government s decision to ban all forms of religious arbitration, (Reitz, Banergee, Phan, Thompson,
2009, p. 700). Consequently, the Family Statue Law Amendment was introduced in 2006 by the
Ontario government in order to ensure that the was one law for all . This legislation effectively banned
all faith based arbitration by instituting that all family law arbitration in the province would be
conducted the same as it would be for any other Canadian, (Berger, 2015, p. 52). Conversely, prior to
this amendment, religious arbitration was permitted in Ontario. However, when religious pluralism

Transnationalism And Immigration
One year ago, I found myself sitting in a strange and mesmerizing world that was hard to comprehend.
As I sat in the Charlotte D. International Airport, I was completely bewildered by the inundation of
new inputs. Growing up in Guyana, migrating to South Florida when I was nine, and living in a
multicultural environment, I was sure I had experienced everything the world had to offer. Traveling
would surely, only, be an extension of living in South Florida, I thought. Yet, I felt like a foreigner
sitting within my nation s own boarder.
As an immigrant to the United States, growing up in the Miami metropolitan area was forgiving for an
assimilating nine year old. Miami, with its diversity of representation, was contrasted against
American Airline s advertisements that portrayed the current hegemonic state of America successful
white males and white families.
Coupled with my experiences as an immigrant and after taking Marginalization in Israel with

Vengeance In Shakespeare
Vengeance is one of the most powerful motivators in the world. The desire for revenge drives people
to do foolish things based on what they think is justified. Virtue is another powerful motivator, but
when faced with the choice, most humans, including Prospero, would choose vengeance. Shakespeare
presents vengeance as a stronger influence than virtue in his play. The Tempest. In Shakespeare s The
Tempest, the main character, Prospero is a very vengeful man, but he does not start out that way. His
brother, Antonio, forced him out of his homeland without any resources, leaving him stranded with his
three year old daughter. An event that traumatic can corrupt even the kindest human being. Prospero s
need for justice compels him to wreck his brother s ship and strand him on the island. He tortures the

Appeasement was thought to be a way of keeping Germany at bay, however, it was proven to be an
ineffective policy as subsequently, war broke out in 1939. Appeasement was a major contributor to
World War 2 as it allowed Hitler to build his military power until it was strong enough to fight a world

yet another war. Hitler was aware that the appeasement policy was a massive compromise to Hitler,

Franco empowered the nation by simmering the large divide within the country. His fascist ideology

that led to Ms. Anthony s decision to choose Ms. Catt as her successor of NAWSA. From there on
Catt spent the majority of her time organizing women at campaigns, and educating them with her

Anabolic Steroids Should Be Banned Research Paper
There are many substances that are banned in the world of athletics. Almost no matter what governing
body you look at for a sports association the list of banned substances is the same. The USADA, the
NCAA, and WADA are the three largest organizations that I have found and all of them bann the same
substances. There list include, but are not limited too stimulants, anabolic agents, beta blockers,
diuretics and other masking agents, growth factors, street drugs, and anything chemically related to
items on the list. It also continued into procedures that it considered illegal which included blood
doping, gene doping, local anesthetics, and beta 2 agonists ( 2016 17 NCAA Banned Drug List 2016).

With athletes these aren t really viewed as performance enhancers but are illegal, so are still placed on
the banned substance list. The common effects of almost any street drug is it gives a feeling of
euphoria, and also makes that person feel invincible, which are the side effects that make people like
them. They also cause nausea and vomiting, the failure to recognize injury, and eventually your body
develops a dependence on them. One of the specific street drugs I m gonna mention is marijuana.
While it s not viewed as a hard drug it still has side effects that people can either view as fun or
dangerous. These side effects impair short term memory, increased heart rate, difficulty concentrating,
and slowed reflexes. It also causes mood swings and impairs comprehensive thinking ( Effects of
Performance Enhancers 2014). These side effects happen very quickly due to how marijuana is
usually introduced to a person system. The reason it acts so quickly is explained on the National
Institute on Drug Abuse website, When a person smokes marijuana, THC quickly passes from the
lungs into the bloodstream. The blood carries the chemical to the brain and other organs throughout

depends on what kind/advanced you re other components need and if you give your computer more
than you need then it may over heat and if you give your computer less it may run slowly and keep on

have a fuse in to stop the supply from breaking so easily. Primary storage is basically the computer s
memory that is accessed by the CPU. Some examples of primary storages can be ROM, RAM and the

Exploring Anti-Semitism in the Gospel of Matthew Essay
The issue between the Gospel of Matthew and Judaism is a convoluted one. The picture that emerges
when talking about whether Jesus s teaching is anti Semitic or not becomes ambivalent and it is not
easy to interpret, as Coogan has pointed out, Matthew functions as a bridge between the two
Testaments . . . (Coogan, 1746). In the context of Jewish Christian dialogue, the fundamental question
is how much of Judaism s principles and practices ascribed to Jesus are preserved from traditional
Judaism? As much as Matthew s Gospel has been considered to be an extremely anti Semitic,
especially in the Christian realm, there remains substantial evidence indicating how Jesus, as
presented by Matthew, had preserved the quintessence of Judaism. ... Show more content on

When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to
be with child from the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:18). Lastly, to complete the prophecy of Jesus s birth,
Matthew reaffirms that . . . Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea . . . (Matthew 2.1). Matthew inserts
these assertions to emphasize the credulity of Jesus tie with traditional Judaism. After exhibiting the
interconnecting story of Jesus birth to the prophecy, Matthew continues to portray how Jesus theology
and teachings are founded on the commandments. As Professor Smarr asserted, Jesus is seen more of
a moral religious teacher (Smarr 18 January 2012) rather than a warrior king who will vanquish the
Romans (Smarr 18 January 2012) as demonstrated in Mark s Gospel. After accumulating a small
group of Jewish followers, he begins to preach what is known as the Sermon on the Mount. In one of
the descriptions, he stated that other should not think . . . that [I] have come to abolish the law or the
prophets; I have not to abolish but to fulfill (Matthew 5:17). He unquestionably declares that he
grounds his teachings on the established Jewish laws. On top of that, he reinforces it by telling the
crowd that whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the
same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven . . . (Matthew 5:19). These laws are in no way
replacements for the law

How Skateboards Invented
So this is my topic and this is my research for how skateboards have advanced through my words
1950s This was the earliest known advent of what we would recognize as traditional skateboarding,
beginning in California, where surfers invented a plank on wheels to simulate surfing on land.
According to Wikipedia, the first skateboards were originally manufactured for surfers to use when
they weren t in the water. Crafted out of square wooden boards with a set of skate wheels from roller
skates, Wikipedia notes that skateboarding was originally denoted sidewalk surfing and early skaters
emulated surfing style and maneuvers, and performed barefoot. 1970s It took a new type of wheel to

Psychological abuse also known as emotional abuse is when someone affects the emotional and social
aspect of someone s life. It is a pattern of behaviors by caregivers that interferes with cognitive,
emotional, psychological, and social development. In other words it is when someone does something
intentionally to hurt the emotional aspects of another person.

Unlike physical abuse, psychological abuse often goes on without being noticed. Psychological abuse
can be seen in the forms of ignoring, rejecting, isolating, corrupting, verbally assaulting, terrorizing,
and neglecting. Ignoring the child would include not being present to respond to a child and not
calling the child by name. Rejection would consist denying the needs of a child and/or refusing to
have physical contact such as holding the child. Isolating the child would be refusing to allow the
child to socially interact with people and limiting the child s ability to move around. Corrupting the
child would be when someone teaches encourages/forces them to perform in illegal manners. Verbal
abuse can include and is not limited to shaming, belittling, yelling, name calling, and threatening the

they would have used wood for their floor. The most common decorative motif was definitely

Summary Of Bridget Bishop s Witch Trial
In the document Words of the Bewitched, Bridget Bishop s witch trial takes place in Salem in the year
of 1692. Bishop is accused of being an evil witch and having harmed others on several occasions. The
document goes on to state that little evidence is needed of her being a witch for it is evident and
notorious to all beholders. Witnesses and victims begin to testify, declaring Bishop guilty of threats
and physical force to have them sign a book, the devil s book. As the trial is occurring, it becomes
apparent that the victims present are extremely upset, and tortured by the mere presence of Bishop. It
was noted that by simply casting her eyes on them they would strike down into fits and would only be
calmed by her touch. To add to the drama of the trial, a confessed witch, testifies that Bishop
tormented her after her confession. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the testimony continues, Bishop is accused of haunting various men at night as they slept, killing a
child, and bewitching animals. Adding to this evidence, a group of jury women testify having found a

made this one of the most memorable witch trial that happened in Salem. Bishop was later convicted
and hanged. Bridget Bishop was one of the 20 women killed and declared a witch by the Salem court.
These were a direct consequence of the Puritan lifestyle occurring in the seventeenth century, and this

would come up with a Monopoly Theme Park . What else could be better and more successful than a
theme park for a company like Hasbro?
Having the capital to invest and wait for a long term profit, Hasbro in my opinion is losing out on an
idea like this. If Again I had to be in charge the theme park would include Kiddie Rides to Adult Thrill
Rides, Would also include a life size monopoly where people can gather together as communities and
enjoy a day out. Organising also competitions for people to come up with new ideas for different
monopolies from around the world and the winner will get a monopoly made to his name. Why not
have a Studio Booth for people to get photographs and make their own family monopoly? Nan s house

  • 2. Essay on The Innovators of American Literature The Innovators of American Literature From their critical assessments on how to improve themselves and to the American public that they influenced by their writings, Jonathan Edwards and Benjamin Franklin illustrate American themes in their personal narratives that quintessentially make part of American Literature. Although they lived in different times during the early development of the United States of America and wrote for different purposes, they share common themes. Their influence by their environment, individualism, proposals for a better society, and events that affected their society generate from their writings. By analyzing Jonathan Edwards Personal Narrative, Resolutions, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Benjamin Franklin did not hold his family beliefs of Christianity, but from his early environment, he drew his relationship to God as a Deist. Franklin believed there is a Supreme Being and it is our job to discover our own reality by reasoning. In his autobiography, he notes several epiphanies that changed his lifestyle. For example, he regretted his leaving Miss Read for England without pursuing their relationship further. He calls these regrets or wrongdoings Erratum (Lauter 788). The spirituality of Franklin and Edwards is distinctive, and their writings reflect their experiences and growth of improvement. Franklin as a Deist felt that he created his destiny by the decisions he made. His autobiography illustrates his faults and accomplishments. This openness aims to the audience, the American, in order for them to reevaluate themselves and improve from their weaknesses. Franklin wanted Americans to become better Americans. With Edwards beliefs, he felt that god predestined every man, and only the elect entered in the afterlife to heaven. He focuses his writing to the Christian audience. His goal is to prepare them to become candidates to be elect and show how the elect can set an example for the rest of the congregation. These men felt the responsibility to live a better life and set the example for every man in their community. As individuals, they constantly contemplate and self evaluate there ... • 3. The Defense Mechanisms Of An Unconscious Level And Help... Freud also believed that the ego exercises a range of defense mechanisms in order to deal with conflict and problems in life. Defense mechanisms operate at an unconscious level and help relief unpleasant feelings. There are many ego defense mechanisms, but a few examples of these include: regression, denial, projection, displacement, repression, and sublimation. Regression is when a person is so overwhelmed with their current issue that to protect themselves, they retreat to actions from an earlier stage of development. Denial, as the name suggests, involves completely blocking out external events from awareness. If a situation is too much to handle, the person denies that it s occurring. Projection is the transfer of your own thoughts, motivations, desires, or emotions to another. Displacement is the transfer of energy created by one object to another. Repression is occurs when a person buries traumatic material into the unconscious. Sublimation is to satisfy an impulse with a substitute object in a socially acceptable way. Although these defense mechanisms may seem unethical, they should also sound somewhat familiar because we all partake in these. In fact, ego defenses are not necessarily unhealthy, the lack of these defenses, or the inability to use them effectively can often lead to problems in life. However, employing the defenses at the wrong time or overusing them, can be equally destructive. Freud considered dreams to be the, royal road to the unconscious, as it ... • 5. Afro-Brazilian Self-Identity in Brazil Essay Over the past several decades there has been an increase, in Brazil, of people whom self identify as being black or Afro Brazilian. What sparked the rise in these identities in Brazil? Was it possible material and intellectual gains or, sparked from activism, or from other possible factors. The black movement and affirmation of black identity came about much later in Brazil than in other countries such as the United States. In my opinion the most important factors for the rise in these identities are the material gains from the Quilombo Clause, the effects of affirmative action and quotas, as well as social activism. One important reason for the increase in people identifying as black in Brazil is the Quilombo Clause in the 1988 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For this community many, who did not prior, began to identify as black in order to qualify for the Quilombo clause and get the material gain of land. Another factor that has led to the increase in people identifying as black is affirmative action and the quota system. In the early 2000s Brazilian government started to introduce affirmative action with a quota system. Quotas were added for university admissions, government jobs, film and media, among other things. Affirmative action policies also favored places that gave fair employment to blacks (Htun). The quota systems allow blacks to have more opportunities for jobs and other intellectual gains. These gains are an incentive for people, whom may not have prior, to begin to self identify as black in order to qualify for them. An example of the quota system in use are the students in Brazil deciding whether or not to apply for the university entrance exam under the quota system in the Wide Angle segment Brazil in Black and White . In this segment they follow five kids who are taking the entrance exam. Two of these kids decide to apply under the quota system (Wide Angle). One of these kids is a girl who is lighter skinned and even though she is lighter she is applying under the quota system because it would increase her chances of getting in. However, the high hope of peace and utopia in fulfillment has always been a human thrive. Throughout history many men have attempted such perfection. Karl Marx inquired the structure of communism through the Manifesto to ensure equality to a large socially grouped people. According to Vonnegut, so did the U.S. government, in the year 2081. People are not forced to exercise so they could be equal with the stronger; rather the strong must equal themselves by adding weights to make them weaker. This produces a sickly and depressing view of society. The people themselves become lesser. After time, the dictatorship of downward living becomes almost a way of live. George has been carrying this burden of forty seven pounds for so long now around his neck that he says it does not bother him anymore. It has become apart of him. When one has become desensitized from the situation, there is no hope for an uprising or change. This is why the person who is in their mid thirties living with their parents all their life are most likely not going to move out anytime soon on their own will. After a longer period of time, it almost becomes comfortable and natural. To move on would actually be harder to accomplish. This imagery shows the complete control on all aspects of life by the dictator. Any type of free thought is immediately forgotten after sounds of automobiles crashing and shotguns going off. In reality, this can be controlled by altering all aspects of the media, as a man takes over and impresses his will on the given society, what he wishes to be let out to the public can be publicized; what he does not want to be exposed, however, will not be publicized. Four Noble Religions Krystal Tuttila World Religions Kenneth West December 9, 2017 Four Noble Truths and The Eightfold Path Buddhism was different from other religions because it taught that liberation can be obtained from suffering. This was based on our own lives and efforts. Stated in the book, Living Religions , The Buddha taught that by understanding how we create suffering for ourselves we can become free (Fisher 137). This was based on one s own involvement and effort to want happiness. It is the smallest planet but very dense. The surface of Mercury is very similar to the surface of the moon, but Mercury has more smooth plains. On Mercury you will not find any clouds, dust storms, rivers or any other sign of weather. The planets magnetic field keeps any winds away from it. Mercury has a mainly iron rich core. He struggled with money, sickness, and stress. Mortenson began the novel struggling to climb one of the toughest mountains and after many attempts to reach the peak, he failed. He then stumbled upon a small village known as Korphe. Meeting the people of Korphe and seeing their generosity showed Mortenson that failing the climb was not a true failure, but an act that brought him to the Balti people. He saw their need for a school and wanted to help educate the next generation of Baltis. If Mortenson had given up the first time he was faced with hardship, he would never have accomplished all he did. Throughout the novel Mortenson endured many obstacles but never gave up. As a child, Mortenson s father told him, If you believe in yourself, you can accomplish anything. (Pg.38). Throughout the history of the country, immigrants have come to Canada seeking a country which is accepting of diversity in ethnicity, language, religion, and culture. Especially since the 1970s, when multiculturalism was introduced by former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, thus becoming an official policy of Canada, the diversity of the nation has increased greatly, (Wang Handy, 2014, p. 1561). Though Canada is officially a multicultural country, it has not resulted in complete religious toleration or separation from Christian values and preference of the state. Through observation of the ongoing, nationwide debate regarding sharia law, this can be seen. Since the early 2000s, a common area of contention amongst Canadians has revolved around the debate of whether or not Sharia law should be included in Ontario family tribunals. Sharia law is used to describe Islamic law as according to the Qur an. Some Canadian Muslims believed that the addition of sharia law would help better integrate Canadian Muslims into society. While previously, other forms of religious arbitration were permitted in Ontario, the attempt to include Sharia law in the early 2000s played an vital role in the Ontario government s decision to ban all forms of religious arbitration, (Reitz, Banergee, Phan, Thompson, 2009, p. 700). Consequently, the Family Statue Law Amendment was introduced in 2006 by the Ontario government in order to ensure that the was one law for all . This legislation effectively banned all faith based arbitration by instituting that all family law arbitration in the province would be conducted the same as it would be for any other Canadian, (Berger, 2015, p. 52). Growing up in Guyana, migrating to South Florida when I was nine, and living in a multicultural environment, I was sure I had experienced everything the world had to offer. Traveling would surely, only, be an extension of living in South Florida, I thought. Yet, I felt like a foreigner sitting within my nation s own boarder. As an immigrant to the United States, growing up in the Miami metropolitan area was forgiving for an assimilating nine year old. Miami, with its diversity of representation, was contrasted against American Airline s advertisements that portrayed the current hegemonic state of America successful white males and white families.
