Marxist View Of What Law Is The Foundation Of Society And Law
1. Marxists argue that control of the means of production is the foundation of society and law is a
reflection of that dynamic. Do you agree? Discuss.
Law is only a superstructure; in reality it only translates the interests of those who hold the reins of
command in any given society; it is an instrument in the service of those who exercise their
dictatorship in this society because they have the instruments of production within their control.
For Marx there were two distinct classes in society, the ruling class, the owners of the means of
production, the Bourgeoisie and the ruled class, the Proletariat . The quote, with which I begin this
essay, clearly explains the Marxist view of what law is in a given society. For Marxists ... Show more

Those in power within the law making bodies are quite clearly what Marx would consider bourgeois:
they are highly paid, highly educated individuals who have a means of controlling how (and indeed
what) laws are put in to place. Arguably it is unavoidable, to find ourselves in a situation, in which, we
have a select group in society in positions of power, who can implement and change legislation. Most
would argue that these people have been democratically elected, and chosen by democratic means.
Marxists believe that the bourgeoisie have the control of law making bodies and thus make laws
which are favourable towards their social class whilst penalising the proletariat. We can see this
expressed in the Communist Manifesto
Your very ideas are but the outgrowth of the conditions of your bourgeois production and bourgeois
property, just as your jurisprudence is but the will of your class made in to a law for all .
This statement highlights the Marxist belief that control of the means of creation of law, allows for the
creation of laws which could be seen as coercive and controlling. An example of these, unjust laws,
within our society which coincide with this Marxist view could be the under occupancy charge, more
commonly known as the bedroom tax. Under this legislation we see a reduction in housing benefits for
people who have

The Hero Of Medicine By Kay Redfield Jamison
Kay Redfield Jamison, an American clinical psychiatrist, and now writer, who published An Unquiet
Mind, had published over 100 academic articles, and chosen by Time magazine as The Hero of
Medicine (O Byrne, 1997). She was and still is an incredibly successful women. Jamison has not
always felt that to be true. Jamison, who has been diagnosed with manic depressive disorder since she
was in high school, but had not really experienced any severe episodes of either mania or depression.
Her father, Marshall, also had manic depressive disorder, but he was not treated. His manic episodes
lead to extreme spending, and long trips, to this day Kay does not know where to. His illness made for
a tough marriage, and interesting family life. While his illness had effected everyone in the family, it
was not to be spoken of (Jamison, 1995). An Unquiet Mind highlights the many trials and tribulations
Jamison had experienced during her life because of her illness. It looked at how hard it was to be a
women, who while studying mood disorders, while experiencing firsthand some of the worst mood
swings anyone could have ever imaged. Jamison was afraid that if news of her illness had gotten out
she would lose everything. This book looks at her life starting from birth, how her experiences, family,
friends, anything you could imagine, shaped her to become the women she is today. Jamison was born

The Importance Of A Common Assessment Framework
1. Correctly name three pieces of legislation which inform work in the field of safeguarding children.
3marks  The Children Act 1989  Safeguarding Act 2010  The Education Act 2002 2. Describe
the role of the Common Assessment Framework in safeguarding children. (400 words) 10marks A
Common Assessment Framework is to enable that children and young people are safeguarding and
looked after. It is also known as CAF. The process of a Common Assessment Framework is to gather
information a child who needs additional support or if for example a teacher of this child has concerns
about his/her ability in learning. The role of a Common Assessment Framework is to provide support
and put strategies in place for the child to meet. When filling in a Common Assessment Framework
you then have to identify targets for the child needs to be meet in order for the child to progress. This
is a common type of framework which is used for the children who need additional help. There is four
steps that you may have to go through when dealing with a common assessment framework form
(CAF). The first step involves you to identify the needs of the child who may have additional needs;
depending on the child s situation the person who is dealing with this issue may want to get the child s
parent involved. The child s practitioner may want to find out if the child has been referred before
therefore the practitioner needs to make sure that the information about the child is reviewed before

James Joyce s Story Araby, By Carson Mccullers
Originating from the Latin verb adolescere , adolescence is the period in which an individual develops
an identity and personal autonomy in the pursuit of comfortable affiliations, goals and convictions. In
the Carson McCullers s story Sucker two young characters struggle with their transition to adulthood.
The narrator Pete, is 16, and the older of the two boys by about three years. The stories action covers
an extended flashback in which Pete reflects on his relationship with his cousin Sucker, who has lived
with him since his folks were killed in a wreck when he was a baby (McCullers 2). Pete generally
treats sucker poorly causing the latter to isolate himself, however, once the former falls for a girl

In due of the fact that primarily, adolescent love is an attempt to arrive at a definition of one s identity
by projecting their self image on another person. Adolescents seek self affirmation in their partners,
and Pete is no exception learning nothing about Maybelle but much about himself. Recognizing that
towards the conclusion of the relationship he is the only one involved. He showers Maybelle with gifts
and services, asking only for her affection in return. However his romance is never realized: I met her
going to the drug store and asked for a date. She told me she was sick and tired of my being around
and that she had never cared a rap about me. She said all that. I just stood there and didn t answer
anything. I walked home very slowly (McCullers 5). Furthermore, it is clear that to Pete, Maybelle is a
purely physical entity in that, every description of her portrays only her beauty and indescribable
perfection ..her hands...are very little and white...It is impossible to describe (McCullers 2). Similarly,
in Araby, the narrator shares the same blind obsession with the idea of winning the love of a perfect
woman. The boys infatuation with Mangan s sister drives him away from childhood towards
adulthood. He breaks ties with childhood friends and luxuriates in his isolation. Like Pete he can think
of nothing but how ecstatic she makes him feel, describing how his body was like a harp and her

What Did Ancient Egypt Contribute To Society
How Did Ancient Egypt Contribute To Society Today? Along with King Tut, no other figure was as
more famously associated with Egypt as Cleopatra VII. Many people believe she was an Egyptian
native, but on the contrary, she was a Greek. Born originally in Alexandria, she is said to be a
descendant of Ptolemy I, commonly known as one of Alexander the Great s most trusted lieutenants.
She became famous in her home city because she was one of the first to actually speak the Egyptian
language, ( 11 Things You May Not Know About Ancient Egypt ). Approximately 30 centuries ago

What many people know about Ancient Egypt s religion is that they are a polytheistic religion group
meaning they believe in more than one deity. Egyptian mythology was the belief foundation of ancient
Egyptian culture. From the belief of multiple deities and an old tradition of passing down stories
orally, every aspect of life in ancient Egypt was informed by the stories which related the creation of
the world and the sustaining of that world by the gods. The significance of Egyptian mythology to
other cultures was in its development of the concept of an eternal life after death, benevolent deities,
and reincarnation. Both Pythagoras and Plato of Greece were said to have been influenced by
Egyptian beliefs in reincarnation and Roman religious culture borrowed as extensively from Egypt as
it did from other civilizations

Quiznos Subs Essay
What is the current state of the Quiznos brand?
Quiznos Subs, founded in 1981 is based in Denver, Colorado. It was designed for busy consumers
looking for high quality subs as an alternative to fast food. Quiznos is currently located in fifty states
and over thirty countries.
Quiznos recently filed Chapter Eleven and what was once a franchise of over 5,000 stores is now only

order to reduce their debt by over four hundred million dollars. This plan they hope will renew the

What is Quiznos s market share compared to Subway, and how much market share is available in the
sandwich segment globally?
Quiznos s biggest threat is that it competes with Subway s $5 foot long, Subway is successful due to
how it advertises itself also.(QSRweb, n.d) Quiznos competitive advantage is that it has way more
variety, from the sizes of their subs, to various different options and way zestier ingredients. As far as
market share they are a competitor in the fast food market. Their market share is very small compared
to Subway. Quiznos saw a fall in market share of over 50% which was from 5,000 to now only 2,100
stores. (QSRweb, n.d) Quiznos is now behind Subway the leader and Jimmy Johns at second. Subway
has over 40,000 stores globally so there is no comparison. (QSRweb, n.d) Quiznos did not only
struggle with Subway as far as pricing globally but also with the Jared campaign of 2000 that focused
on healthier foods pleasing the average consumer who are health conscious.
There is an increase in overall market share of the sandwich segment globally as it is said that
consumers are purchasing sandwiches away from home versus making them and taking them from
home, like the days of old. Consumer demand is there because of the need for lower prices, fresher
ingredients, healthier items and more variety. While there was a major closing

Reflection About Deaf Culture
At the age of 2, I lost my hearing in Pakistan from a disease called meningitis. When I was 4, my
family and I to came to America to explore hearing options. Before coming to America, I had no
formal communication, I couldn t speak or sign. My mom also wanted me to be a part of the hearing
culture because I needed to learn English and Urdu so I can communicate with family members. My
mom worked with our doctor and I received the cochlear implant. It was so I could communicate in
the hearing world and be able to talk and hear. After I got my surgery, I began school and was isolated
between hearing and deaf kids. My hearing loss was leaning towards the deaf culture but I wanted to
stay with the hearing culture and I did. In the deaf culture, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Pakistani culture is heavily influenced by the religion. In our culture, we don t and are not
allowed to drink alcohol, but drinking alcohol is a custom in America. Many of the different cultures
and religions in the USA have celebrations and customs with alcohol. My family and I haven t been
enslaved from anyone to drink alcohol as other respect our culture as well. Muslim Pakistani s avoid
environments in which alcohol is served due to this restriction. However, when one must be present
where alcohol is served they do not order or drink alcohol but instead order another beverage.
Another way that our culture differs with the American culture, is that in our culture females must
cover their entire body and hair. But in the American culture people don t wear as much clothing as
our culture does. Our culture and the American culture both have to compromise and accept each other
as it is part of the diverse American.
In Pakistani culture, people usually live in the same house for generations. This means that we have
neighbors that stay at the same house for generations as well. Because of this we become very close
and attached with our neighbors. We take care and help our neighbors like family. But in America,
people are constantly moving and although we know our neighbors we don t have the same
connection and don t get a chance to be as close. Unfortunately, we cannot stop people from moving

Pros And Cons Of Lowering The Drinking Age At 21
A big question pondered in the United States is why the legal drinking age is twenty one. The United
States people don t understand why eighteen year old can die fighting for their country, but cannot
legally drink until the age of twenty one. If you have ever talked to someone who was born in the
1970s or earlier, they might have told you that they could legally drink under the age of twenty one.
This is true because each state is responsible for setting their own minimum legal drinking age; not the
federal government. States are responsible for setting the drinking age based on the concept of
federalism. Congress eventually passes the National Minimum Drinking Act of 1984. According to
www.legalflip.com, the Act basically states that if you want money from the federal government that
you re entitled to for road and transportation systems, you will raise the drinking age to twenty one
years old. Some states refused to change the age, but by 1988 changed the age to twenty one even if
they didn t want to, so they could get money from the federal government. I believe that the legal age
should remain at twenty one. A few reasons of why I believe that is because a lower drinking age
would be unsafe, nine hundred lives yearly have been saved by keeping the drinking age at twenty
one, and lastly another critical reason not to lower the drinking age is the prevalence of binge
drinking.
A lower drinking age would be unsafe. According to www.usnews.com, twenty one was not just a

Power Leads to Corruption
Power makes individuals corrupt
Corruption is when people in positions of entrusted power abuse their power for their own personal
gains [or to fulfill the agendas of the group they represent] (Transparency International). Lord Acton, a
nineteenth century historian, argued that power is the root cause of corruption. The more power one
has, the more corrupt one is likely to become ( Biography of Lord Acton. ). Although some
commentators argue that there is no correlation between power and corruption, however Lord Acton
was right because power makes individuals egocentric, makes the powerful less sympathetic towards
those who are inferior, and makes a person hypocrite.
First of all, power is such a tool that it makes individuals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They instead increased their own budgets as compared to the last budget and all of this was at the cost
of low subsidies on essential food items, electricity and other the necessities of life (Ali, Kalbe. Areas
That Matter Most. ). Hence a logical conclusion that follows is that powerful individuals use their
power for their personal gains and are not concerned about the effect of their doings on the society.
Another major reason because of which power tends to corrupt is that people with absolute power
usually become less sympathetic towards those with no or less power and do not consider the
perspective of other individuals. Adam Galinsky, a psychologist at Northwestern University conducted
a series of experiments to find whether powerful individual give importance to others or not. As part
of the experiment, Galinsky asked the participants to write letter E on their forehead. The results of the
experiment showed that participant who were primed with the feeling of power wrote E backward,
when seen by another person (Lehrer, Jonah. How Power Corrupts. ). This experiment clearly shows
how powerful individuals see the world through their own eyes and do not care for what other view.
Besides this, example from history also proves the point

Colonization Of The Hawaiian Islands
Introduction
Colonisation of the Hawaiian Islands in the years following Captain James Cook s landing in 1778
had a huge influence on the societal structure, the ruling system, and the gender roles within the
community. With the old culture dismantled, a new one was built on the basis of Christian values,
brought to Hawaii by the missionaries from New England. This essay will give a brief description of
the colonisation of Hawaii, and then focus on the effects this process had on the societal structure, the
monarchy, and the gender roles as were widely accepted in society, as well as how these changes
affected other aspects of their culture. It will also briefly explore the effects of the expanding economy
due to the opportunities the colonisers saw for growth and monetary gain.
The Ruling System
A major change to 19th century Hawaiian society, largely caused by the arrival of foreigners into the
islands and the acculturation that followed, was the establishment of a western modelled monarchy,
solidifying Hawaii as an imperial society. In 1810, a Hawaiian chief, Kamehameha I, united the
islands to form a kingdom, using the weapons and advice of the foreign colonisers. The high chiefs of
that era immediately understood the importance of the foreigner s ships and their weaponry.
Kamehameha [...] was especially adept at maximizing the use of Western advisors and war technology
in the advancement of his imperialistic aims. (Pomaika i Cook, Withy and Tarallo Jensen 2003). This

The Importance Of American Indians In Schools
Personally, I think that learning about American Indians in school is a good thing. Especially in

American Indians know to Minnesota. I have learned that they were treated poorly, and that our
government had promised them safe land to use and practice their beliefs. As we found out, our
government did not uphold their promises and basically were stealing the land right out from under

Leadership Style Of Leadership And Leadership
Introduction
Leadership in today s society plays a very pivotal role in the outcome of a company or organization. In
addition, leaders and managers have to adhere to a strategic style of leadership that the managers and
associates have experienced over the years. With this being said, future leaders may experience
complex challenges such as natural disasters and terrorists, change in uncertainty in the business
political, and social environment. (Alexander, cited in Hasselbein and Goldsmith, 2006). One could
pose a statement, it s not if the challenge will come, it s how the leader will handle the challenge.
Many leaders have come from different approaches as to what leadership means to them. For example,
John Maxwell stated that leadership is a process marked by constant growth (Maxwell, 2013). In
addition, Greenleaf stated that true leadership emerges from those whose primary motivation is a deep
desire to help other, (Spears, 2004). Furthermore, according to Ken Blanchard, who is a world
announce leader, stated that Leadership style is, how you behave when you are trying to influence the
performance of some else, and that leadership is a combination of supportive and directive behaviors.
(Blanchard, Zigarmi 1985). An illustration of directive behavior would be a cook preparing an entrée
for a customer in a restaurant, who is being monitored by the chef. Also an illustration of supportive
behavior would be, a process of team building in the company

The Effects of the Chernobyl Accident on International...
The Effects of the Chernobyl Accident on International Actions Concerning Nuclear Power
Early in the morning of April 27, 1986, the world experienced its largest nuclear disaster ever (Gould
40). While violating safety protocol during a test, Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl power plant was placed
in a severely unstable state, and in a matter of seconds the reactor output shot up to 120 times the rated
output (Flavin 8). The resulting steam explosion tossed aside the reactor s 1,000 ton concrete covering
and released radioactive particles up to one and a half miles into the sky (Gould 38). The explosion
and resulting fires caused 31 immediate deaths and over a thousand injuries, including radiation
poisoning (Flavin 5). After the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although radioactivity was at first just at the surface, later studies showed that these radioactive
elements were absorbed by the soil and that their effects would be long lasting (Gould 69). Within a
short amount of time animals consumed these radioactive plants, and these particles worked their way
up the food chain. Soon, not only berry crops in Austria had to be discarded, but also milk supplies in
Italy (68, 69). More than twenty European nations received enough fallout to require food restrictions,
and 100 million people altered their diets in the ensuing months (Flavin 6, 16). Adding to this paranoia
was the fact that even the experts had little knowledge of what was happening. Most nations were
unprepared, and many implemented differing safety guidelines for food (15). Some governments
outright lied to quell the public s fear (Gould 70). In the end, millions of people were exposed to
unhealthy doses of radiation, and estimates for future deaths from cancer caused by this exposure
range as high as one million, with half being fatal (Flavin 18). These are clearly examples of the
externalities of a nuclear disaster.
The public effects of the Chernobyl disaster were far reaching. First of all, it negatively influenced a
number of counties domestic opinions regarding nuclear programs. Although nuclear protests were
common in the 1970s, by 1986 it had dropped from public scrutiny to the point

The Pros Of Construct Validity
Any time a test is conducted, one of the major concerns is if the test is valid or not. Testing the validity
of a test is the measurement of how well what is being tested is measured. For example, a test might
be designed to measure a stable personality trait but instead measure transitory emotions generated by
situational or environmental conditions. A valid test ensures that the results are an accurate reflection
of the dimension undergoing assessment (Cherry, 2016). There are two main types of validity: content
related validity and criterion related validity.
Content related validity includes face validity and constructs validity. Face validity ask the question
does this test what is supposed to be tested. According to Saul McLeod, ... Show more content on

This type of validity refers to the extent to which a test captures a specific theoretical construct or trait,
and it overlaps with some of the other aspects of validity. Construct validity does not concern the
simple factual question of whether a test measures an attribute (Cronbach Meehl, 1955). To test for
construct validity it must be demonstrated that the phenomenon being measured actually exists. So,
the construct validity of a test for intelligence, for example, is dependent on a model or theory of
intelligence. Construct validity entails demonstrating the power of such a construct to explain a
network of research findings and to predict further relationships. The more evidence a researcher can
demonstrate for a test s construct validity the better. However, there is no single method of
determining the construct validity of a test. Instead, different methods and approaches are combined to
present the overall construct validity of a test. For example, factor analysis and correlational methods
can be used (McLeod, 2013). The method is imperative to predicting the future potential of
candidates. Because the more information that can be produced by the construct validity test the more
material can be used to forecast the individual

Main Characters In Homer s Odyssey And Virgil s Aeneid
[insert title]
In both Homer s Odyssey and Virgil s Aeneid, the main characters of each poem, Odysseus and
Aeneas, travel to the underworld in search of guidance and the foretelling of fate. In the Odyssey, this
scene is being retold by Odysseus to the Phaiakians, while in the Aeneid, the reader is told the scene
from a third person point of view. Each poet s depiction of the underworld has different purposes
within the text. I argue that Homer s depiction is meant for Odysseus to entertain the Phaiakians, while
Virgil s depiction is meant to instate values within Aeneas. Although both texts contain many of the
same scenes within the underworld, the differing methods of narration between the texts, and the
added details within the Aeneid, greatly change the effects of the scene on characters within the
poems. These differences are important because Odysseus must gain favor from the Phaiakians, and
Aeneas must fulfill his destiny. To support this argument, I will first discuss each character s journey
in the underworld, the descriptions of the underworld, and finally the purpose within each text.
On each character s journey to and through the underworld, they go seeking one person but have other
experiences that shape the characters and their future journey. Odysseus has been instructed by Circe
to seek Tiresias, and Aeneas was visited by his father in a dream and ordered to see him in the
underworld. Early in the journey for both characters, they encounter an issue with the unburied dead.
Aeneas is told by Sibyl that a friend lies dead... bear him first to his place of rest (Virgil, Book 6, Line
179 182) before heading to the underworld. This shows the importance of burying the dead and this is
one of the earliest values that Aeneas learns on his journey. Aeneas must protect and respect his men,
even in their deaths. The first soul that Odysseus encounters in the underworld is that of Elpenor, his
dead companion that had not yet been buried under earth of the wide ways (Homer, Book 11, Line
52). Elpenor begs Odysseus to burn me there with all my armor that belongs to me, and to give him a
proper grave (H, B11, L74). Odysseus later grants Elpenor s wishes and returns to Aeaea to give him a

The Equity Method of Accounting for Investments
Chapter 1 the equity method of accounting for investments Chapter Outline I. Three methods are
principally used to account for an investment in equity securities. A. Fair value method: applied by an
investor when only a small percentage of a company s voting stock is held. 1. Income is recognized
when dividends are declared. 2. Portfolios are reported at market value. If market values are
unavailable, investment is reported at cost. B. Consolidation: when one firm controls another (e.g.,
when a parent has a majority interest in the voting stock of a subsidiary or control through variable
interests (FIN 46R), their financial statements are consolidated and reported for the combined entity.

B. Payments made in excess of underlying book value can sometimes be identified with specific
investee accounts such as inventory or equipment. C. An extra acquisition price can also be assigned
to anticipated benefits that are expected to be derived from the investment. For accounting purposes,
these amounts are presumed to reflect an intangible asset referred to as goodwill. Goodwill is
calculated as any excess payment that is not attributable to specific accounts. For the year 2002 and
beyond, goodwill is no longer amortized. V. Deferral of unrealized gains in inventory A. Gains derived
from intercompany transactions are not considered completely earned until the transferred goods are
either consumed or resold to unrelated parties. B. Downstream sales of inventory 1. Downstream
refers to transfers made by the investor to the investee. 2. Intercompany gains from sales are initially
deferred under the equity method and then recognized as income at the time of the inventory s
eventual disposal. 3. The amount of gain to be deferred is the investor s ownership percentage
multiplied by the markup on the merchandise remaining at the end of the year. C. Upstream sales of
inventory 1. Upstream refers to transfers made by the investee to the investor. 2. Under the equity
method, the deferral process for unrealized gains is identical for upstream

Rembrandt Self Portrait Analysis
1. Rembrandt Self Portrait with a Wide Brimmed Hat 1632
In the Baroque period, artists started to depict themselves as the main subject matter more often.
Rembrandt had painted a lot of self portraits in his entire life. In his self portrait did in 1632,
Rembrandt is the focus and he is dressed fashionably. Like most of the self portraits in Baroque, he
only painted his upper body so his face can be seen clearly. At the age of 26, Rembrandt showed a
sense of youth and pride in his gaze. The painting is done in a realistic way which the details of
clothing can be seen clearly. Back in the time when camera did not exist, painting is the only way to
capture the world in graphics. Self portrait is the record of a person s physical appearance. At that
period, self portrait was not only appreciated as art but also a record of the people and the society.

Essay An Inspector Calls
An Inspector Calls
An Inspector Calls is a play written by JB Priestley in 1945 and set in 1912. Priestley demonstrates his
concern with moral responsibility and his beliefs in Socialist values through the character of the
Inspector, whom he uses as a mouthpiece throughout the play. He voices his opinions on these issues
using this technique, and they are shown by the way the Inspector deals with the Birling family and
are exemplified by the obstacles to social harmony in which the Inspector has to face before coming to
a suitable and justifiable conclusion.
The play was written in 1945 within a week of World War Two ending but set in 1912, when Britain
still had its Empire and was doing very well financially. The time ... Show more content on

Priestley hoped that in writing An Inspector Calls , people could look back on events with hindsight
and learn from the mistakes that society had made. He primarily wrote the play for a middle class
audience about the working class, and how the Birlings and Gerald
Croft were all involved in making a young working class woman s life a misery, and consequently
driving her to suicide.
The Birlings are a typical upper class family they look down on those who are socially beneath them,
such as the Inspector, yet look up to those above . Mr. Birling puts this specific idea into practice
frequently. Although arrogant, he knows that he is lower down the social scale than his wife, as well as
Gerald s family. However, he is aware of the difference in social class, and accepts them Don t blame
her. [Lady Croft] comes from an old country family landed people and so forth so it s only natural.
At the beginning of the play, the Birlings are celebrating their daughter s engagement to Gerald Croft
the son of Arthur s business competitor. Immediately the impression is given that love isn t just the
only force bringing Sheila and Gerald together; in fact, it seems that Mr. Birling is more interested in a
new business proposal than his daughter s happiness: You re just the kind of son in law I always
wanted. Your father and I have been friendly

How Does Edgar Allan Poe Use Figurative Language In The Raven
The mood of the poem The Raven can be described in many words. In a single word, it can be
considered Gothic . More specifically, however, the mood is mysterious, melancholy, and even
slightly morbid. Edgar Allan Poe created the mysterious mood in his poem by using figurative
language, imagery, setting, tone, and the speaker to help enhance his writing. Poe uses figurative
language as one of the ways to add to the mood and tone of his poems. Personification is one of the
many types of figurative language that Poe uses. An example of him using personification is when he
says each separate dying ember and Uncertain rustling of each purple curtain , both of the quotes help
add to the mysterious mood of the paper. The setting of the poem,

The Era Of The Colonial Era
1. The Colonial Era
In this era people were self dependent on growing their own food as well as making clothes for
themselves. In today s times we rely on retail shopping for our clothes and food. There are separate
markets for each providing room for progress in society.
As far as the business side goes in this era, most businesses were small and relied on local profit alone.
In society today, while small businesses do still exist more often than not most corporations are
relying on profit across the globe. This way more profit and jobs can be made.
The Industrial Era
The factory system was just being developed in this era. This was the beginning of a major way in
which businesses would grow. Still today we use techniques for this time bust we have improved on
the efficiency of how products are made. Also putting laws in place for no child labor which was a
great improvement.
Specialty or larger stores began to compete with the general or smaller stores that were prominent in
the previous era. Trade became less important, and with this the market economy was born. We have
improved this system with finding a good balance in big corporations and smaller businesses. This
allows the system to function much easier and there is much more room for success from several
companies, not just a few.
The age of Titans
Some called this the second industrial revolution. This was an age of many people building business
empires. To this day many businesses

years to come.
Harvey Milk had many goals in mind to make a positive change, the biggest goal over all was to get
gay people the rights they deserve. Making a difference for America was the upmost important task
for Harvey. Milk had some struggles accomplishing his goals, before being officially elected in office,
he ran about three times and never got elected. Those three times really benefited his election, because
each time he ran he received plenty of new supporters. During that time Milk had some competition,
his opponents were Anita Bryant and John Briggs. They spoke against homosexuals. Briggs wanted to
ban gay and lesbian teachers in California public schools. The official time of this act was called
Preposition 6 also known as Briggs initiative. But Luckily after Harvey s third time running, he finally
met his first and most important goal and won the position on the Board of Supervisors. All that was
left was to promote equality and gay rights. The good news is that Milk campaign defeated
Preposition 6 and the Anti Gay measure was successfully rejected. Never giving up on his goals shows

Analysis Of Daniel Defoe s The Life And Adventures Of...
People have always wanted more power, wealth, or food than what was needed. This desire causes
greed in society. Greed in a culture or society will cause the destruction of that society. From Adam
and Eve consuming of the fruit from the tree of knowledge to the failure of companies and businesses
in today s society, the desire for wants instead of needs has a negative impact (Clark par. 5). In 1719,
Daniel Defoe had written a novel in which a main theme is greed. In Daniel Defoe s, The Life and
Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, the protagonist, Robinson Crusoe, begins a journey packed with
many misfortunes all over the world, caused by his desire to have more than he needs. Although he
has a life filled with misfortune, Crusoe is able to persevere through the trails placed before him by
humbling himself and properly classifying his wants and needs. Greed will cause downfalls and trials
but humility will aid in recovering after the downfalls. In The Life and Adventures of Robinson
Crusoe, before the many misfortunes begin, Crusoe lived a good life in the upper station of low life.
His family was not rich, yet they were not poor, they prayed to have neither poverty nor riches (Defoe
2). Throughout his life, Crusoe s father had taught him:
the middle station of life was calculated for all kind of virtues and all kind of enjoyments; that peace
and plenty were the handmaids of a middle fortune; that temperance, moderation, quietness, health,
society, all agreeable

Family Secrets And Mystery In The Story Of Oedipus
The story of Oedipus is a perfect example of family secrets and mysteries that lie within a society. No
matter which era or generation, there will always be similar stories and events like Oedipus. Mankind
is fascinated by mystery, and when is specific to their families, the urge and curiosity to get to the
bottom of things will always be present. The basic questions of who am I? And where did I come
from? Will always be the driving force behind any individual in the search for the truth. The story of
Oedipus can be seen both as tragic as well as heroic in some of his actions, ignorance cannot be used
to excuse a crime but it can make it unintentional.
Oedipus was cursed, indirectly, due to the sins of his father Laius after a crime he committed; the
cursed stated that his unborn son would kill him. Laius was blinded and possessed by the curse since
he immediately demonstrated selfishness, as well as a lack of affection and love for his newborn son.
This is because he commanded that the child be killed. He pierced the three day old infant s ankles
and gave him to a shepherd, with orders to expose him on Mount Cithaeron, outside Thebes
(Sophocles 28). Even before Oedipus was born, his fate will be filled sealed with tragedy; it was
indeed inevitable to prevent.
It was significant to point out how fate took away Oedipus s free will, which started when a drunken
guest at a banquet questioned his paternity (Sophocles 28), while leaving out important details that

Malnutrition And Nutrition
Approximately 3.1 million children die from hunger each year ( World Child Hunger Facts ). Hunger
for a long period of time results in malnutrition which is the lack of proper nutrition, caused by not
having enough to eat. Hunger and malnutrition is a serious problem faced by many children across the
globe. It is even more prevalent among the developing countries of Asia and Africa where millions of
children are underweight because they do not get enough to eat. Not only does the malnutrition
severely affect children s physical and mental health, it also affect their academics. Malnutrition has
several negative effects on a child s learning and school performance as it can lead to lower
attendance, unsatisfactory student behavior, and poor academic performance.
School plays a huge role in children s development as it teaches them to think differently and provides
them with the skills necessary for success. It also helps children get out of poverty and encourages
them to bring positive changes to their society. Identifying the effects of malnutrition on academic
performance is important because education is every child s right and not having enough to eat
prevents them from performing at their full potential.
Hunger and Malnutrition negatively affects school attendance. Malnutrition leads to more school
absences which affects children s academic performance. A study conducted in Southwest Ethiopia by
Tefera Belachew et al found that food insecure adolescents were nearly

Police Subculture Analysis
I. Question I have been assigned to define the concept of police subculture and the role it plays in
police relations with African Americans, and to describe the six subculture perspectives of police
officers as they are presented in the text, and to discuss whether I believe those perspectives are still
valid today.
II. Answer In his article, Strecher describes the police subculture, as when police officers are working
together, they often develop the same set of values, customs, and artifacts that regulate how members
behave and which establish the boundaries of appropriateness, and can also be determined by what
ethnic group one belongs to (Strecher, 1971, P.224). For instance, according to Strecher, there are
large groups of police officers that work primarily within subcultures, with African Americans,
Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian, Jewish, etc. (Strecher, 1971, P.224). With regard to police
relations with African Americans and how the police subculture influences this relationship, Strecher

Should Public Transportation Should Be Made Free In The...
Imagine being lost in New York City. Where would you go? My first instinct would be to hail a taxi or
get on a train or subway and take it somewhere familiar to me. What if you had no money, then what
would you do? I don t know what I would do. You can t take public transportation without money, but
you should be able to. Even if you weren t lost, and you had somewhere to go, what would you do? So
many people are unable to afford public transportation, that they are just not able to get around, and
get to where they need to go, like to work or to an event. If public transportation were to be made free,
people who can t afford a train ticket would now be able to get around. Moreover, despite the obvious
benefits, there would be no more crazy city car traffic. This would help to conserve the environment,
and to create a safer and healthier environment. Therefore, public transportation should in fact be
made free in the United States.
Issues regarding public transportation have been an ongoing debate since the 1950s. In the 1950s,
African Americans were discriminated against; They were not able to to ride in the front of the bus
and had to give up their seat for a white person. For example, Rosa Parks sparked much debate and
controversy when she refused to give her seat up for a white person. This led to the Montgomery Bus
Boycott, when blacks refused to ride public busses at all. Now, Social Justice advocate, Tyler Falk
states: While African Americans are no longer required

Executive Order 8802
With the coming of World War II, African Americans were arguably elevated to a higher standing in
society due to the total war effort. But what part would Presidential and Military action take in this
advancement since their duty is to protect their citizens? And would the efforts from these offices
triumph over the racial prejudice that ruled American society, and most importantly, would their
legacy last for an improved quality of life for a good portion of the US population. With these
questions in mind, Executive Orders No. 8802 and 9981 as well as President Franklin D. Roosevelt s
call for increased admission of African Americans in the Armed Forces alone did not create change in
social perception of Black US citizens, at times highlighting barriers to social equality, but did sow the

One of the nationwide race riots in particular, the Detroit Race Riot of 1943, demonstrates the lack of
change in perspective and the strains the Executive Order 8802 placed on communities. The large
scale chaos occurred after a fistfight from white disdain for the influx of black people looking for
work in automobile factories. With the inability to house the Southern immigrants, racial tensions
grew stronger in the city already known for white supremacy group the Ku Klux Klan s influence. The
deaths of 25 blacks from the violence of police brutality and prejudices show that initiatives aimed at
the labor force in fact had minimal influence over the established institutions that ruled the cities
harboring large populations of African Americans. They in fact created tensions that would further
target the blacks and prevent a social equality at a local scale. That said, the article fails to mention the

Physical Appearance In Frankenstein
From hundreds of years until now, there are many serious issues concerning human interactions that
have been discussed in different ways and can be seen in countless pieces of work such as the novel
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. In this novel, Shelley wrote about various themes that are significant in
understanding the concept of fitting in with society and human interactions with one another and with
ones self. She was trying to get across important themes that are still relevant today, including the
theme of physical appearance. The theme of physical appearance is shown many times in the novel
and illustrates how people are judged and discriminated according to how they look and the
consequences it may have on individuals.

  • 2. Marxist View Of What Law Is The Foundation Of Society And Law 1. Marxists argue that control of the means of production is the foundation of society and law is a reflection of that dynamic. Do you agree? Discuss. Law is only a superstructure; in reality it only translates the interests of those who hold the reins of command in any given society; it is an instrument in the service of those who exercise their dictatorship in this society because they have the instruments of production within their control. For Marx there were two distinct classes in society, the ruling class, the owners of the means of production, the Bourgeoisie and the ruled class, the Proletariat . The quote, with which I begin this essay, clearly explains the Marxist view of what law is in a given society. For Marxists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Those in power within the law making bodies are quite clearly what Marx would consider bourgeois: they are highly paid, highly educated individuals who have a means of controlling how (and indeed what) laws are put in to place. Arguably it is unavoidable, to find ourselves in a situation, in which, we have a select group in society in positions of power, who can implement and change legislation. Most would argue that these people have been democratically elected, and chosen by democratic means. Marxists believe that the bourgeoisie have the control of law making bodies and thus make laws which are favourable towards their social class whilst penalising the proletariat. We can see this expressed in the Communist Manifesto Your very ideas are but the outgrowth of the conditions of your bourgeois production and bourgeois property, just as your jurisprudence is but the will of your class made in to a law for all . This statement highlights the Marxist belief that control of the means of creation of law, allows for the creation of laws which could be seen as coercive and controlling. An example of these, unjust laws, within our society which coincide with this Marxist view could be the under occupancy charge, more commonly known as the bedroom tax. Under this legislation we see a reduction in housing benefits for people who have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Recognizing that towards the conclusion of the relationship he is the only one involved. He showers Maybelle with gifts and services, asking only for her affection in return. However his romance is never realized: I met her going to the drug store and asked for a date. She told me she was sick and tired of my being around and that she had never cared a rap about me. She said all that. I just stood there and didn t answer anything. I walked home very slowly (McCullers 5). Furthermore, it is clear that to Pete, Maybelle is a purely physical entity in that, every description of her portrays only her beauty and indescribable perfection ..her hands...are very little and white...It is impossible to describe (McCullers 2). Similarly, in Araby, the narrator shares the same blind obsession with the idea of winning the love of a perfect woman. Along with King Tut, no other figure was as more famously associated with Egypt as Cleopatra VII. Many people believe she was an Egyptian native, but on the contrary, she was a Greek. Before coming to America, I had no formal communication, I couldn t speak or sign. My mom also wanted me to be a part of the hearing culture because I needed to learn English and Urdu so I can communicate with family members. My mom worked with our doctor and I received the cochlear implant. It was so I could communicate in the hearing world and be able to talk and hear. In our culture, we don t and are not allowed to drink alcohol, but drinking alcohol is a custom in America. Many of the different cultures and religions in the USA have celebrations and customs with alcohol. My family and I haven t been enslaved from anyone to drink alcohol as other respect our culture as well. Muslim Pakistani s avoid environments in which alcohol is served due to this restriction. However, when one must be present where alcohol is served they do not order or drink alcohol but instead order another beverage. Another way that our culture differs with the American culture, is that in our culture females must cover their entire body and hair. But in the American culture people don t wear as much clothing as our culture does. Our culture and the American culture both have to compromise and accept each other as it is part of the diverse American. In Pakistani culture, people usually live in the same house for generations. This means that we have neighbors that stay at the same house for generations as well. Because of this we become very close and attached with our neighbors. • 9. Pros And Cons Of Lowering The Drinking Age At 21 A big question pondered in the United States is why the legal drinking age is twenty one. The United States people don t understand why eighteen year old can die fighting for their country, but cannot legally drink until the age of twenty one. If you have ever talked to someone who was born in the 1970s or earlier, they might have told you that they could legally drink under the age of twenty one. This is true because each state is responsible for setting their own minimum legal drinking age; not the federal government. States are responsible for setting the drinking age based on the concept of federalism. Congress eventually passes the National Minimum Drinking Act of 1984. According to www.legalflip.com, the Act basically states that if you want money from the federal government that you re entitled to for road and transportation systems, you will raise the drinking age to twenty one years old. Some states refused to change the age, but by 1988 changed the age to twenty one even if they didn t want to, so they could get money from the federal government. I believe that the legal age should remain at twenty one. A few reasons of why I believe that is because a lower drinking age would be unsafe, nine hundred lives yearly have been saved by keeping the drinking age at twenty one, and lastly another critical reason not to lower the drinking age is the prevalence of binge drinking. Areas That Matter Most. ). Hence a logical conclusion that follows is that powerful individuals use their power for their personal gains and are not concerned about the effect of their doings on the society. Another major reason because of which power tends to corrupt is that people with absolute power usually become less sympathetic towards those with no or less power and do not consider the perspective of other individuals. Adam Galinsky, a psychologist at Northwestern University conducted a series of experiments to find whether powerful individual give importance to others or not. As part of the experiment, Galinsky asked the participants to write letter E on their forehead. The results of the experiment showed that participant who were primed with the feeling of power wrote E backward, when seen by another person (Lehrer, Jonah. How Power Corrupts. ). • 12. Colonization Of The Hawaiian Islands Introduction Colonisation of the Hawaiian Islands in the years following Captain James Cook s landing in 1778 had a huge influence on the societal structure, the ruling system, and the gender roles within the community. With the old culture dismantled, a new one was built on the basis of Christian values, brought to Hawaii by the missionaries from New England. This essay will give a brief description of the colonisation of Hawaii, and then focus on the effects this process had on the societal structure, the monarchy, and the gender roles as were widely accepted in society, as well as how these changes affected other aspects of their culture. It will also briefly explore the effects of the expanding economy due to the opportunities the colonisers saw for growth and monetary gain. The Ruling System A major change to 19th century Hawaiian society, largely caused by the arrival of foreigners into the islands and the acculturation that followed, was the establishment of a western modelled monarchy, solidifying Hawaii as an imperial society. In 1810, a Hawaiian chief, Kamehameha I, united the islands to form a kingdom, using the weapons and advice of the foreign colonisers. The high chiefs of that era immediately understood the importance of the foreigner s ships and their weaponry. • 15. Leadership Style Of Leadership And Leadership Introduction Leadership in today s society plays a very pivotal role in the outcome of a company or organization. In addition, leaders and managers have to adhere to a strategic style of leadership that the managers and associates have experienced over the years. With this being said, future leaders may experience complex challenges such as natural disasters and terrorists, change in uncertainty in the business political, and social environment. (Alexander, cited in Hasselbein and Goldsmith, 2006). One could pose a statement, it s not if the challenge will come, it s how the leader will handle the challenge. Many leaders have come from different approaches as to what leadership means to them. For example, John Maxwell stated that leadership is a process marked by constant growth (Maxwell, 2013). In addition, Greenleaf stated that true leadership emerges from those whose primary motivation is a deep desire to help other, (Spears, 2004). Furthermore, according to Ken Blanchard, who is a world announce leader, stated that Leadership style is, how you behave when you are trying to influence the performance of some else, and that leadership is a combination of supportive and directive behaviors. The Effects of the Chernobyl Accident on International Actions Concerning Nuclear Power Early in the morning of April 27, 1986, the world experienced its largest nuclear disaster ever (Gould 40). The resulting steam explosion tossed aside the reactor s 1,000 ton concrete covering and released radioactive particles up to one and a half miles into the sky (Gould 38). Soon, not only berry crops in Austria had to be discarded, but also milk supplies in Italy (68, 69). More than twenty European nations received enough fallout to require food restrictions, and 100 million people altered their diets in the ensuing months (Flavin 6, 16). Adding to this paranoia was the fact that even the experts had little knowledge of what was happening. Most nations were unprepared, and many implemented differing safety guidelines for food (15). Some governments outright lied to quell the public s fear (Gould 70). In the end, millions of people were exposed to unhealthy doses of radiation, and estimates for future deaths from cancer caused by this exposure range as high as one million, with half being fatal (Flavin 18). These are clearly examples of the externalities of a nuclear disaster. The public effects of the Chernobyl disaster were far reaching. Testing the validity of a test is the measurement of how well what is being tested is measured. For example, a test might be designed to measure a stable personality trait but instead measure transitory emotions generated by situational or environmental conditions. A valid test ensures that the results are an accurate reflection of the dimension undergoing assessment (Cherry, 2016). There are two main types of validity: content related validity and criterion related validity. Content related validity includes face validity and constructs validity. Face validity ask the question does this test what is supposed to be tested. According to Saul McLeod, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This type of validity refers to the extent to which a test captures a specific theoretical construct or trait, and it overlaps with some of the other aspects of validity. Construct validity does not concern the simple factual question of whether a test measures an attribute (Cronbach Meehl, 1955). To test for construct validity it must be demonstrated that the phenomenon being measured actually exists. So, the construct validity of a test for intelligence, for example, is dependent on a model or theory of intelligence. Construct validity entails demonstrating the power of such a construct to explain a network of research findings and to predict further relationships. The more evidence a researcher can demonstrate for a test s construct validity the better. However, there is no single method of determining the construct validity of a test. Instead, different methods and approaches are combined to present the overall construct validity of a test. For example, factor analysis and correlational methods can be used (McLeod, 2013). The method is imperative to predicting the future potential of candidates. • 19. Main Characters In Homer s Odyssey And Virgil s Aeneid [insert title] In both Homer s Odyssey and Virgil s Aeneid, the main characters of each poem, Odysseus and Aeneas, travel to the underworld in search of guidance and the foretelling of fate. In the Odyssey, this scene is being retold by Odysseus to the Phaiakians, while in the Aeneid, the reader is told the scene from a third person point of view. Each poet s depiction of the underworld has different purposes within the text. I argue that Homer s depiction is meant for Odysseus to entertain the Phaiakians, while Virgil s depiction is meant to instate values within Aeneas. Although both texts contain many of the same scenes within the underworld, the differing methods of narration between the texts, and the added details within the Aeneid, greatly change the effects of the scene on characters within the poems. These differences are important because Odysseus must gain favor from the Phaiakians, and Aeneas must fulfill his destiny. To support this argument, I will first discuss each character s journey in the underworld, the descriptions of the underworld, and finally the purpose within each text. On each character s journey to and through the underworld, they go seeking one person but have other experiences that shape the characters and their future journey. Odysseus has been instructed by Circe to seek Tiresias, and Aeneas was visited by his father in a dream and ordered to see him in the underworld. Early in the journey for both characters, they encounter an issue with the unburied dead. Aeneas is told by Sibyl that a friend lies dead... bear him first to his place of rest (Virgil, Book 6, Line 179 182) before heading to the underworld. This shows the importance of burying the dead and this is one of the earliest values that Aeneas learns on his journey. Aeneas must protect and respect his men, even in their deaths. The first soul that Odysseus encounters in the underworld is that of Elpenor, his dead companion that had not yet been buried under earth of the wide ways (Homer, Book 11, Line 52). Elpenor begs Odysseus to burn me there with all my armor that belongs to me, and to give him a proper grave (H, B11, L74). • 33. Police Subculture Analysis I. Question I have been assigned to define the concept of police subculture and the role it plays in police relations with African Americans, and to describe the six subculture perspectives of police officers as they are presented in the text, and to discuss whether I believe those perspectives are still valid today. II. Answer In his article, Strecher describes the police subculture, as when police officers are working together, they often develop the same set of values, customs, and artifacts that regulate how members behave and which establish the boundaries of appropriateness, and can also be determined by what ethnic group one belongs to (Strecher, 1971, P.224). For instance, according to Strecher, there are large groups of police officers that work primarily within subcultures, with African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian, Jewish, etc. (Strecher, 1971, P.224). With regard to police relations with African Americans and how the police subculture influences this relationship, Strecher describes this as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 34. Should Public Transportation Should Be Made Free In The... Imagine being lost in New York City. Where would you go? My first instinct would be to hail a taxi or get on a train or subway and take it somewhere familiar to me. What if you had no money, then what would you do? I don t know what I would do. You can t take public transportation without money, but you should be able to. Even if you weren t lost, and you had somewhere to go, what would you do? So many people are unable to afford public transportation, that they are just not able to get around, and get to where they need to go, like to work or to an event. If public transportation were to be made free, people who can t afford a train ticket would now be able to get around. Moreover, despite the obvious benefits, there would be no more crazy city car traffic. This would help to conserve the environment, and to create a safer and healthier environment. Therefore, public transportation should in fact be made free in the United States. Issues regarding public transportation have been an ongoing debate since the 1950s. In the 1950s, African Americans were discriminated against; They were not able to to ride in the front of the bus and had to give up their seat for a white person. For example, Rosa Parks sparked much debate and controversy when she refused to give her seat up for a white person. This led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, when blacks refused to ride public busses at all. Now, Social Justice advocate, Tyler Falk states: While African Americans are no longer required ... • 36. Executive Order 8802 With the coming of World War II, African Americans were arguably elevated to a higher standing in society due to the total war effort. But what part would Presidential and Military action take in this advancement since their duty is to protect their citizens? And would the efforts from these offices triumph over the racial prejudice that ruled American society, and most importantly, would their legacy last for an improved quality of life for a good portion of the US population. With these questions in mind, Executive Orders No. 8802 and 9981 as well as President Franklin D. Roosevelt s call for increased admission of African Americans in the Armed Forces alone did not create change in social perception of Black US citizens, at times highlighting barriers to social equality, but did sow the roots for economic opportunity and in turn gave ... One of the nationwide race riots in particular, the Detroit Race Riot of 1943, demonstrates the lack of change in perspective and the strains the Executive Order 8802 placed on communities. The large scale chaos occurred after a fistfight from white disdain for the influx of black people looking for work in automobile factories. With the inability to house the Southern immigrants, racial tensions grew stronger in the city already known for white supremacy group the Ku Klux Klan s influence. The deaths of 25 blacks from the violence of police brutality and prejudices show that initiatives aimed at the labor force in fact had minimal influence over the established institutions that ruled the cities harboring large populations of African Americans. They in fact created tensions that would further target the blacks and prevent a social equality at a local scale. That said, the article fails to mention the improved quality of life for the 1.6 Million who left the South with their Jim Crow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Physical Appearance In Frankenstein From hundreds of years until now, there are many serious issues concerning human interactions that have been discussed in different ways and can be seen in countless pieces of work such as the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. In this novel, Shelley wrote about various themes that are significant in understanding the concept of fitting in with society and human interactions with one another and with ones self. She was trying to get across important themes that are still relevant today, including the theme of physical appearance. The theme of physical appearance is shown many times in the novel and illustrates how people are judged and discriminated according to how they look and the consequences it may have on individuals. Physical appearance is the way a person looks and the features ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People, in general, are unjust when they encounter someone that look or act differently.
