Overcoming Adversity
I used to think that I was all that. In elementary school and middle school I didn t have to work hard
and was able to get good grades without putting forth a lot of effort. My personal philosophy was that
if I worked hard in class during the school day, then when I got home from school, my time should be
my own. I had been successful following this belief system for years, and then, I enrolled in AP World
History (APWH) in the tenth grade. My experiences in APWH changed my entire outlook on my role
as a student and caused me to reevaluate my perspective on the things that were important to me. I had
heard that APWH was going to require a lot of work, but I was sure that it would be no different than
any other honors level class that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It became obvious that he didn t care about me as a student. He only cared about me as an athlete
whose skills could help his team. By the mid term point of Fall semester, I was depressed and ready to
give up. I was disappointed in myself because I was still failing despite dropping out of football. My
parents refused to let me succumb to the poor me syndrome. This was the time to show my strength of
character. I needed to prove to myself that I could overcome this obstacle. I prayed to God to give me
guidance on how to get back on track. I started staying up later to do the reading. I paid more attention
in class. I joined a study group. As I put forth more of an effort, my grade slowly began to improve.
By the end of the fall semester, I had raised my F to a D . I kept my focus during the spring semester. I
ended the year with a 77% in the class. Although I didn t receive an A or a B, I received something
more valuable: self respect and self esteem. I learned that I must always do what is in my best interest
even if there are others who tell me that I am making wrong decisions. My work ethic is now the
complete opposite of what it was in my 10th grade year. I have learned many life lessons: I take my
studies seriously, I know that I am capable of being successful in college level classes, and most
importantly, I have learned the value of hard work and

To Obey or Disobey
Obedience is an age old expectation that rulers, priests, and government officials have required for
years from their subjects. Most of the time individuals follow their leaders without question. This is
the case because the population from which obedience is required believes that they continue to have a
choice. When, for whatever reason this belief is lost, some individuals will begin to exhibit an
increasing disobedience to the requirement. This often increases to the point of violence or, the case of
a country, war. While there are all types of disobedience, this paper will discuss civil disobedience and
the social pressure often associated with it.
A good example of this type of cycle can be found in the historical background ... Show more content

Universities over time have done a lot of research trying to understand why people obey and disobey.
Most people believe they are good and trustworthy. These individuals feel no matter what occurs they
will always try to do the right thing in their day to day life. In The Perils of Obedience, Milgram tells
of a woman that the last shock she administered to the learner was extremely painful and reiterates
that she did not want to be responsible for any harm to him . (695). Despite her desires she still
administered the shock, thus being obedient to the person in charge and not to what she believed.
Individuals who still believe in the concept called into question by the disobedient group, often feel
intense pressure to maintain loyalty to the old ruling entity. In Doris Lessing s article, Group Minds,
she states But the majority will continue to insist speaking metaphorically that black is white, and after
a period of exasperation, irritation, even anger, certainly incomprehension, the minority will fall into
line .(724) Pressure to conform can manifest itself in another way as well.. Individuals may feel
compelled to follow the ideas and rules of someone else and follow that group of people no matter
what path it my lead them down or where those ideas and rules may take them. Social pressure comes
from everywhere; family, church, friends, jobs, co workers, and etc.. During the

Conflicts That Arise from Particular Ways of Seeing the...
TRIAL ESSAY Conflicts that arise from particular ways of seeing the world are made evident through
the shaping of texts. In Barry Levinson s film Wag the Dog and Michael Moore s documentary
Fahrenheit 9/11 , it is clear that the perspectives in which the audience views the world create
particular conflicts. In both texts, the conflicting perspectives arise from the way the naïve public
views the world and the way that the government and media view the world through their particular
agendas. In Wag the Dog , the plot relies on the alleged sexual impropriety of the president and the
way in which particular political powers and the media intervene. In the film it is clear that the
audience is seeing two perspectives, that of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The audience is extremely aware of this through the use of the Albanian girl scene where through
filming and editing, the American people are manipulated into believing a lie. Levinson uses dramatic
irony here to emphasise this point to the viewers, who know what the public in the film do not. Brean
s assertion of we are giving them what they want is indicative of a public who remember the slogans
but don t remember the wars . As Brean satirises the perspective of the outsider s the view in which
the American people see the world is seen, especially through the use of the Albanian girl where the
audience literally sees what the audience in the film sees and believes. As Brean uses repetition in
referring to the Gulf War of 91, the audience witnesses the verisimilitude that the public so easily
succumbs to. Though, his character is portrayed in a different light at the end of the film through the
death of Stanley Motts. In this scene his character shifts to that of a menacing, powerful figure. Even
though the audience is aware of his significance and power throughout the entire film, the fact that he
is the one that orders for Motts to be killed further extrapolates on the idea that the public is naïve to
image, as even the audience watching the film believes that the character of Brean would not commit
such an act. As a close up is utilised at a high angle, high key lighting

Critical Reflection 3: The Role of Technology in the Repression of the Id
It is appallingly obvious that technology has made virtually all facets of reality more efficient and
easier to access than it has ever been before. With the gamut of conveniences that it allows,
technology has become seamlessly integrated into the social infrastructure at almost every level. There
is hardly an arena in which technology is not used. While the technological prowess of modern society
increases, it is important to note the potential hazards and side effects of this escalation. Among these
hazards are the threats of the perpetuation of social stratification, and in effect, antiquation of the ...

While Winston is being scanned, the camera zooms into an MCU shot of Winston s head and the
camera perspective is made to be from the viewpoint of the telescreen that is scanning him. This shot
type is juxtaposed with a shot in which the telescreen is incessantly flashing in the background behind
Winston as he sits on his desk. These filming styles highlight the prominence of the telescreen and
portray it as an omnipotent force controlling Winston s actions and facial expressions through fear.
Because of the presence of this telescreen and the other surveillance cameras throughout this
oppressive society, Winston is made to repress his feelings of contempt and discontent within the
oppressive regime of Big Brother. More importantly, the fear of these surveillance cameras forces
Winston to repress any animalistic urges he has, such as the urge to express his libido for Julia. There
are a multitude of scenes within the film that highlight Winston s fear of expression of his libido when
within the presence of a telescreen. One example is when he and Julia make sure that the telescreen is
off in O Connor s (Michael Redgrave s) residence when they admit that they had broken party rules by
being together. They fear the

The Outsiders As A Disgrace In The Outsiders And Greasers
Being called a disgrace can be hurtful, but are you actually one? In the book, The outsiders, there are
two groups of people that are called Greasers and Socs. Characters in the novel tend to believe that
Greasers are troublemakers and Socs are the higher class teens. Socs are a disgrace because of their
actions and attitudes. The Socs are a disgrace because they beat up greasers based off of their money
issues and the side of a city they live on. If you are someone who is rich like a soc and is in a better
environment and situation you are expected to be more respectful. Teens with a strong foundation are
more responsible, and kids who have no parents or anyone that is a positive role model end up doing
more of what they want. Kids that grow up on a wrong side of town tend to make the most crimes
based off of how they were raised. As a Soc, they are being a disgrace by the way they act. Most
people in this novel think that Greasers are a disgrace, but no one notices how badly the Socs treat
Greasers. The socs bully greasers and that could be causing more anger to build in the greasers that
cause them to act out. Socs verbally and physically abuse them, it s one thing to steal but it s another
when you hurt someone mentally or physically on purpose. I ve seen with my own eyes that kids who
have been hurt by others or their parents cause them to act out and do things they normally wouldn t
do because of their built up anger. No one knows what happens at home for a

Keurig And The Nespresso Effect
Any article or review I came across talked about the expensive lifestyle a Nespresso machine
demands. The Nespresso machine is a single serve coffee or espresso maker. The only thing is, in
order to get a cup of coffee you first have to buy the pods. The pods can be pretty pricey and are only
sold by Nespresso. According to Penenberg from Pando.com each pod costs about 70 cents, more or
less. If you re looking to buy a cheap coffee maker with cheap coffee, the Nespresso is not the way to
go; but if you re looking to invest some money in a quality machine with good espresso the Nespresso
is right for you. The article I found, written by Adam Penenberg, compares two different coffee
makers: the Keurig and the Nespresso. Penenberg compares

Fight or Flight Have you ever heard of the Fight or Flight Response and had no clue what it was? Well
I can inform you on what it is and the effects that it has on the nervous system. The fight or flight
response is a reaction that occurs in response to an attack or threat to survival which causes you to
fight for your life or flight for your life. It s when the adrenal glands release epinephrine (adrenaline)
and norepinephrine (noradrenaline) in response to a possible threat. A perfect example of a fight or
flight response is me against a tiger. Even though I have the option to fight or flight, if I am standing
toe to toe with an angry, hungry tiger I have no chance in winning the fight. I have an opportunity to

Arthrogram Summary
According to WebMD, an Arthrogram is a radiographic examination of a joint, such as a knee,
shoulder, hip, ankle or wrist. It is used to obtain a series of pictures by using special kinds of
radiographic imaging like fluoroscopy, MRI, CT and contrast. Contrast material is a dye that is
injected into the patient and helps the doctor see the soft tissue structures of that joint such as tendons,
ligaments, muscles, cartilage and joint capsule (Healthwise Staff, 2014, p. 1).Contrast is either
injected directly into the joint or indirectly where the dye is injected into the bloodstream and absorbs
into the joint. Without contrast these structures would not be seen on a regular radiographic image.
The article also states that Fluoroscopy helps take ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Theme Of Ambition In Julius Caesar
And to speak truth of Caesar, I have not known when his affections swayed more than his reason. But
tis a common proof that lowliness is a young ambition s ladder, whereto the climber upward turns his
face. But when he once attains the upmost round,he then unto the ladder turns his back, looks to the
clouds, scorning the base degrees by which he did ascend.(II,i,19 27) In this part of his soliloquy,
Brutus is convincing himself that Caesar is going to climb the ladder of ambition and become a tyrant.
He doesn t give valid facts to prove this, just the possibility. Brutus doesn t trust the leader of the
conspiracy, Cassius, but joins him anyway. Even though he doesn t trust him, he let s himself be
flattered and tricked by Cassius. Brutus says he trusts Caesar and that he is his friend. If that was true
he wouldn t have to kill him. Also, Brutus says he will do anything for honor, and the conspirators say
that they are doing an honorable thing yet they hide in the shadows.
Brutus is very good at persuading people; he convinced himself to kill his best friend. He doesn t give
facts to prove that Caesar will become a horrible tyrant, just the possibility. He says that rulers abuse
their power when they separate it from compassion. But then he recalls he has never known Caesar to

Drought Is A Natural Hazard
Abstract:
Drought is a natural hazard due to adverse climatic changes which affects various sectors like
environment, society and economy. It occurs not only because of the scarcity of rainfall but also due to
the inefficient water resource management. Studies indicate that over 30% of the entire land surface of
earth is affected by drought. As a developing country, majority of Indian population depends directly
or indirectly on agriculture. So the abnormal monsoon precipitation, causing loss of agricultural
production, can highly influence the human life. In this paper, Karur district in Tamil Nadu which
often has a very low annual rainfall is taken as the study area for drought monitoring. The
technological evolution in remote sensing over the past few decades has opened a new era in the field
of drought monitoring. Thus, use of remote sensing and GIS helps in developing early warnings about
drought conditions which will be useful for planning the strategies for relief work. Drought analysis
can be performed by calculating different drought indices like Standard Precipitation Index (SPI),
Standardized Water Level Index (SWI) and Normalized Differences Vegetation Index (NDVI).Rainfall
data from 2000 2009 is used to compute the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) in different time
scales which is used in meteorological drought monitoring. Standardized Water Level Index (SWI)
obtained from ground water level data is used for the hydrological drought analysis.

Citizen Sherlock Jr Film Analysis
During the first unit, we discussed the different techniques used during filming. These techniques can
include how the camera is position on the actors like in Citizen Kane. It can also be how much of the
actor is showing and how long the scene is without cuts like in both Sherlock Jr. and Singing in the
Rain. Another technique involves cutting scenes into short shots like in Battleship Potemkin. These
techniques are used to show off new film styles, to indirectly tell the audience something, or to show
off the amazing abilities of the actors.
In Buster Keaton s Sherlock Jr. (1924), there were many different techniques used throughout the film.
One of these techniques used is long take. Long take is when the film continues rolling without any
cuts (Geiger and Rutsky 1075). Using this means that everyone in the scene must get the entire scene
right without any mistakes. Long shots are also used ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

using angles to portray emotion. Kane is shot from a low angle so that the audience is looking up at
him. Shooting him from this angle shows that he has more power than Susan. She was going to do
what he said and he was intimidating to her. Susan was shot from a high angle. At that moment, Susan
was powerless to the tyranny that Kane had on her. She was unable to fight back that night. After

The Low Water Levels in Lake Bridgeport
Lake Bridgeport was built in 1930 for flood control, water storage and recreation. Tarrant County
owns the land and water that makes the lake. There is a spillway that takes water through the Trinity
River to Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth. This year has been a rough year for Lake Bridgeport
with three digit temperatures and draining water to the other lakes. Since one of the purposes to build
Lake Bridgeport was for storage, The Tarrant County water district approved to let out 20,000 acre
feet of water from Lake Bridgeport to prevent the other lakes to be low. But 2013 is anything but a
normal year. Today, what once was a scenic lake is covered in chest high weeds. Boaters and
fisherman enjoy going to Lake Bridgeport during the summer. But in the summer of 2013 the boat
ramps were unusable so the number of residents going to the lake dropped. There are dead fish
floating to the shoreline as well as many other wildlife animals. The lake tested positive for Zebra
Mussel larva, which is shell like creatures that are very sharp and stick to boats, anchors and docks.
The Mussels are very dangerous for the lake environment, but they also eat bacteria so they could help
the lake water clear up. If no water is drained out of Lake Bridgeport then the residents of Eagle
Mountain Lake and Lake Worth could possibly run out of drinking water.
Problem: The Lake is the place to be on a hot summer day, but how is it supposed to be any fun when
the lake is drying up each day.

The Longworth House Office Building, Thomas Jefferson...
What I would like to point out especially is its capital. The building has capitals with two volutes,
which was very common in the Ionic order. Each column consists of the capital, shaft, and base, which
is analogous to the basic form of the Ionic order. The most important feature of the Ionic order is the
frieze, which is usually carved with relief sculpture arranged in a continuous pattern around the
building (Hemingway, 2003). However, the feature was not applied to this building. Both in the Doric
and the Ionic, the column are fluted but these columns have smooth surfaces. During my research, I
found that many architectures identified as the Ionic order style, actually have smooth surface columns
as well (ex. the Longworth House Office Building, Thomas Jefferson Memorial). Various architectural
designs that the Western society has adopted demonstrates how heavily they are influenced by the
Ancient Greek culture and the Roman culture. During those eras, the buildings were intended to
communicate its function to the viewer automatically. Known as architecture parlante (which literally
meant speaking architecture ), its purpose was to explain its identity to the viewer. The term used for

Fortunately, there is a currently a draft called the Intimate Privacy Act of 2015 , which would make it
a crime to post revenge porn (Brandel). Americans value privacy and it is the reason why we have
laws to protect personal information such as; financial data, medical records, driver s license,
addresses, etc. Laws protecting privacy have a long and important history in this country, and privacy
is essential to the freedom of expression and speech, as well as a being a fundamental to a democratic
society committed to equality and personal autonomy (Warren). This should be just as true for sexual
privacy as it is for financial and medical privacy, and a federal bill recognizing this issue is long
overdue. Despite the current outdated laws that fail to protect women online, more companies have
started to be much more diligent and organizations such as, Twitter, and Reddit have deemed it
necessary to ban revenge porn on their sites, making the internet a safer place for women, which is a
major progression towards the advancement of the internet in general (Dixit). Most important Google
has just recently decided that they will honor all requests to remove search results that are sexually

accomplishment because the philosophy of Google has always been to have a search engine that
would reflect the whole web and under a federal law passed in 1996, Internet providers and websites
are not legally responsible for third party content posted by users as long as that content does not
violate intellectual property or federal criminal laws (Guynn). More companies are starting to see the
significance of revenge porn as they are intensely personal and emotionally damaging and essentially
serve to only degrade the victim, predominantly

The Conflict Between Christian Faith And Those Of Islamic...
As a global collective, the human past is purely one of conflict. Power struggles are widespread and
unique in context, but these struggles are not special in the presence or complexity of the self versus
other conflict within them. One of the strongest examples for this assertion is the First Crusades. At
face value, any observer can immediately take notice of the separation between those of Christian
faith and those of Islamic faith. If additional diligence in research is provided, any one of these
observers begins to find the endlessly deeper self versus other struggles present on both sides,
specifically amongst the Christian military. Numerous accounts from Christian actors serve to support
this argument; the recorded thoughts of both soldiers and intellectuals detail the surprising amount of
divisions between what should be the Christian united. The relationship between the self and the other
present in the mindset of the actors of the Crusades shows that a definite, dynamic, yet necessary
division between all groups of people exists, no matter the already established bonds of any collective.
One of the most complicated pieces to the self versus other puzzle is the dynamic nature of its
idealistic segregation. Each person involved with the First Crusade had an undeniable loyalty to God.
In an effort seemingly meant to cultivate more glory, some saw it fitting to sacrifice established
intercommunity bonds for the sake of peer provided glory. The glory promised by Pope

Kubilai Khan s Society In The Travels By Marco Polo
In the book of The Travels by Marco Polo, he explains the smoothly working society that was put

and ferries to cross rivers. Another service he provided was something of what resembles crop and

December 12, 2014
For my cultural event, I visited the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center in Los Angeles,
California on Thursday, December 11, 2014. I had originally planned to visit the National Museum of
Art and History in Washington D.C., but I found myself in Los Angeles due to the birth of my
Grandson. I attended the museum by myself. The Getty Museum was originally started in 1954 in J.
Paul Getty s home in Pacific Palisades. After Getty s death, the Getty Trust took over the museum.
The collection eventually outgrew the site and the Getty Center was built in the Santa Monica
Mountains above interstate 405.

The hallway walls were constructed of glass, allowing me to take in the fantastic views. At that
moment, I felt inspired and grateful that one extremely wealthy man had left such a glorious place for
future generations to enjoy. Luckily for me I ended up in the North pavilion, where Italian art before
1700 is housed.
The first piece of art I focused on was the painting titled Allegory of Fortune by Dosso Dossi. Dosso
painted it around 1530 in Italy. The painting depicts a man and a woman, the man is sitting with a robe
over his lap and the woman is sitting with her breasts exposed and her body positioned such that you
can t see full frontal nudity. The woman represents fortune, and she is holding a cornucopia,
representing the bounty she may bring. She is sitting on a bubble which denotes that her favors are
fleeting. The man in the painting represents chance. He is looking longingly at fortune as he deposits
lottery tickets into a golden urn. During the time of the painting, civic lotteries were becoming popular
in Italy. It is believed that the painting s probable patron was Isabella d Este, Marchioness of Mantua.
Isabella s emblem included a bundle of lots, signifying her personal experience with varying fortunes.
One interesting fact about this painting is that it was found and purchased for a modest sum at a flea
market. The seven foot painting was strapped to the top of a car and taken to Christie s

Beethoven, Symphony No. 9
Beethoven, Symphony No. 9
Ludwig Beethoven was not only one of the greatest composer musician ever born he is a wonderful
study tool for me during exam week. My faithful study partner was born in a small town, Bonn,
Germany on December 16, 1770 to a family of professional musicians. Beethoven learned violin and
some other instruments from his father. His father wanted him to be perfect in music, and in that
endeavor he violently scolded Beethoven whenever he made any kind of mistake during practice.
Even, according to one story, due to the punishments given by his father, Beethoven suffered from
hearing problems in future, which basically ruined his life. (NP)

It was a road block for the musical genius and it became nearly impossible for him to perform again.
Beethoven stopped creating new composition; he obviously was very disappointed and became
constantly more frustrated. It had been said that he even wrote letters to his brothers telling them how
he felt like it was an end of his life. During this period when Beethoven had almost stopped working
on music creation, he was living off funds from his earlier compositions, and symphonies. Those
funds soon proved to be no enough to support Beethoven, and he feel deeper and deeper into an
economic slump.
Tragically on March 26, 1827, due to his dimensioning health, and lack of funds to provide care,
Ludwig Van Beethoven, the great musical genius ever to walk this earth, died.
Even though one may think his life was cut off way to short, he left countless amazing works to

Symphony No. 9.

Beethoven. (Wikipedia) Completed in 1824, the choral Ninth Symphony is one of the best known

of Beethoven s greatest masterpieces not to mention a spectacular work to listen too while studying

Reconstruction Failed For African Americans
Reconstruction failed for African Americans. By the 1890 s all optimism that came as a result of the
Constitutional rights guaranteed to them by the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments was gone. Their
reality, particularly for those in the South, was one of lynchings, Jim Crowe laws, and voting
restrictions. They faced discrimination, segregation, limited educational opportunities, and a tenant
farming system that only slightly differed from slavery. In the early twentieth century, visionaries such
as Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, and Marcus Garvey recognized the urgent need for change.
These great leaders were in agreement that action was required to uplift the African American race.
However, their philosophies on how to approach it were vastly different. Born a slave on a Virginia
farm, Booker Taliaferro Washington (1856 1915) rose to become one of the most influential African
American intellectuals of the late 19th century. He was nine years old when the Civil War ended. He
worked hard as a young child and at 16, he left home to attend Hampton Institute. One of the few
black high schools in the South, it focused on industrial and agricultural training while maintaining an
extremely structured curriculum that stressed discipline and high moral character. Washington thrived
in that environment. He eventually went on to head a new school in Tuskegee, Alabama. The
Tuskegee Institute was devoted to the training of black teachers, farmers, and skilled workers. Under

Hester Prynne And Reverend Dimmesdale
Trials and tribulations are experienced by everyone. Ups and downs are just peaks and valleys where
people grow and learn from. Hester Prynne, from The Scarlet Letter, is punished for committing a
crime but she matures and understands why she is being punished. On the other hand, the person she
commits this crime with, Reverend Dimmesdale, holds his tongue forcing him to always think about
it. Therefore, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote The Scarlet Letter to express that the journey one faces in
the past is irrelevant to the decisions and actions of the present. In the beginning, Hester Prynne
commits adultery with Reverend Dimmesdale and she becomes pregnant with his child. Hester will

He is consumed by his thoughts on his crime, therefore he always has it in the back of his mind.
Because Dimmesdale lives in the past, he is not his healthiest, mentally and physically. He hurts and
every time he is reminded of his sin, he puts a hand on his heart signifying that his heart aches.
Dimmesdale is not healthy and it shows to those around him. Not only is ... his voice more tremulous
than before [he has also made] a constant habit, rather than a casual gesture, to press his hand over his
heart? (90). Dimmesdale feels obliged to give his heart to Hester Prynne and Pearl, and he lets that
damage him. Because he is guilty of the same thing as Hester, he also interprets a meteor as a sign
from the heavenly father. Richard Hull states, Dimmesdale and Hester consider the meanings they
attach to things to be meant by a sender, but both the Enlightenment narrator and Pearl deny such
meanings were sent. Thus there are two interpretations of interpretation (Hull). He talks about the two
ways of interpreting things, believing they are signs or dismissing them completely. Hester believes
her child is a sign as Dimmesdale believes the meteoroid is his sign, and then the narrator and Pearl
decline the idea of messages being sent from a higher power. Dimmesdale may have been
hallucinating when he saw this shooting star but he still depicts it as a message from God. The narrator
says, We impute it, therefore, solely to the disease in his own eye and heart that the minister, looking
upward to the zenith, beheld there the appearance of an immense letter the letter A marked out in lines
of dull red light (116). There is a motif of the scarlet letter and the author uses it to disclose that
Dimmesdale is guilty of the same crime as Hester. They are both guilty but only one of them is
convicted, Hester. Because one of them must deal with their crime publically and the other in private,

King Kong Film Analysis

No film has captivated my imagination more than King Kong. I m making movies today because I
saw this film when I was 9 years old. Peter Jackson
There is bewilderment to decry in Peter Jackson s King Kong, but one progression that is comparably
mellowed and a grip to the key movie s success. Kong has conquered Ann Darrow and carried her to
his landing place, high on the mountain. He laid her down, not roughly, starts to roar, and expose his
teeth and beat his chest. Ann who is an unemployed vaudeville acrobat, in some way naturally knows

As Kong escalates the skyscraper, Ann yells not because of the gorilla but the barrage on the gorilla by
a civilization that speculates that he must be shatter. The movie forms the same somewhat of
transformation compromising an enormous gorilla that Spielberg s Close Encounters of the Third

King Kong is a brilliant entertainment, it is like the blooming of all the capability in the original

Epic Poetry By Homer And Catullus Essay
From ancient Greek to Roman literature, styles and genres in writing changed drastically. The Greeks
were adamant on showing their extensive knowledge of myth, often referencing the most obscure
myths. The gods mentioned in their poems often had crucial roles necessary for developing the plot, or
they were the reason the story began at all. The Romans however were very educated, and showed this
in their works by referencing older Greek literature or authors instead of direct myths. Another drastic
difference in the divergent genres, namely epics and lyrics, is the expression of love, which through
Homer and Catullus, shows us how love can be expressed as erotic, familial, or as a love of place by
the protagonists and secondary characters, despite whether it is the primary or secondary theme. In
Greek literature a prominent author is Homer, whom we don t know if actually existed or if Homer is
a pseudonym for a collective group of writers. Homer is popular for writing epic poetry, which
follows the heroic journey of the protagonist through a lengthy narrative. In epics, the poet focuses on
the main character s search for kleos, the only thing a proper hero requires. In the Iliad, while the
search for kleos is a major theme, love is also portrayed in many different respects. The love shown
between Hector and his wife Andromache is one very strong example of the theme of love. At this
time, love was not something people strived to achieve. Marriages were often used to

A lot of the work will consist of analyzing, testing, and modifying. This is why a CPAF contract was
used instead of a fixed cost contract because it is difficult to predict actual costs. A company would
put themselves in a bad situation to have a fixed cost contract if the costs where more than the
contracted amount (Murphy, 2009, pp. 24 7). As with any project, there will always be costs or
expenses associated. The type of expenses will always depend on the type of work or project. Some
expenses that will be associated with this contract are direct and indirect costs. Direct costs are costs
that can be totally identified with or traced back to a particular product or service. Those costs are
materials, labor, or expenses related to producing the product or service. Indirect costs are not easily

The Theme of Loneliness in Of Mice and Men
In the novel, Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck used George and Lennie s relationship and the theme
of hope to point out the loneliness in the novel. The novel starts off and is set in Soledad which means
lonely. At the beginning they get a job working on a farm together. Lennie is a little retarded and has
great physical strength that isn t too controllable. As they work from ranch to ranch, Lennie relies on
George for guidance and help. Rather than wasting their earnings, they try to save it in the hope of
buying a place of their own. While working at one ranch they meet a worker named Candy who tries

They didn t have any family members around to give them support. As farmers that gave them the
chance to make a friendship: Guys Like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world,
they got no family (Steinbeck 15). After they start talking then it s clear that they both don t want to be
alone their whole life. Steinbeck points out that most of the people that work on the ranch don t have
anything to look ahead to. George and Lennie want to have something to look forward to and that is
why they hope that it won t happen to them: With us it ain t like that, We got a future (Steinbeck 15).
This is where the hope of them accomplishing their dreams comes into play. Later Lennie goes on to
tell that it won t happen to them because they have each other to look over each other. That is where it
is showing their friendship covering up the true loneliness of the characters.
The novel suggests doubts of someone getting their dream many times. This is where the character
Crooks joins in. He states that he has seen a hundred of men in his time and that everyone has a
hunger of a piece of land in their head and none of them ever get it. He uses the metaphor to going to
heaven that not everyone gets to go and that not everyone gets some land: I seen guys nearly crazy
with loneliness for land (Steinbeck 89). Here it suggest that George and Lennie might not get a place,
but they refuse to believe it. The last thing that they want is to be

get into the wrong hands it could go drastically wrong. Many other people believe that if we get rid of
nuclear weapons for good, then we will have complete world peace. They think that the world will be
so much better off without weapons with so much power. People think that with nuclear weapons
comes war. The way they want to get rid of the nuclear weapons is by dismantling them and throwing
them away. Could you imagine getting rid of over 14,900 nuclear weapons? The cost of just doing that
would be millions alone. Many people believe that nuclear weapons are the worst thing that mankind
has invented and that they should be eliminated for good. People say that it affects the climate and

of the nuclear weapons are at peace with one another. They don t want to start war with each other,

Cause And Effect Of Smartphone Technology
Imagine; it is 1989 and the only kind of portable phone in existence is a flip phone, which only the
wealthy can afford. Flash Forward twenty eight years and there are four different brands of
smartphones, with over forty versions all together. There are endless options to transfer information
from one person to another, and millions of applications that can be downloaded. Since the early

In the article Brill does an exceptional job of starting off analyzing the then and now of security of the
country. Highlighting the extensive efforts of the country to effectively respond to the attack of 9/11.
Emphasizing the billions of dollars that the government has poured into new technology and agencies
that can better prepare for biological terrorist attacks. Brill captured the attention of many readers
when expressing that terrorism cannot be stopped because it s constantly evolving. He feels that the
government should come up with rational ideas that can deal with the ever changing terrorism threat
instead of creating policies off of current headlines that dominates the day. Brill talks about different
threats and scenarios that go unnoticed by the government. He uses a report that does a scenario which
was catastrophic and claimed the lives of many americans. The excerpt then says, The terrorist were

The Ambassador, By Ghazzi Alqussaibi
Translators are literary ambassadors, bringing a foreign work to the audience of the target language.
Choosing to translate His Excellency, The Ambassador, by Ghazzi AlQussaibi, was my primary pick
for its popularity among Arab readers around the world. Some critics claim that the novel is actually a
true story of an Arab politician, who was a close friend of the author. The author was actually a
political figure for most of his life, we find almost all of his novels were centered on the life and work
of politicians. When I started to translate this novel, I faced several obstacles ranging from linguistic,
cultural, and political challenges. The setting of the novel was not accurate to the real life. At the
beginning, Yusuf Alfalaki arrived at the Saint James Palace to meet the prime minister of the United
Kingdom at his office. Most people know that the office of the prime minister is actually at the 10
Downing Street, and there is no office for the prime minister at the Saint James Palace. Saint James
Palace is a historical building that is still occupied by some the royal family. So why would the author
give inaccurate historical account of places, even though he was once ambassador for long in the
United Kingdom? I thought of changing the whole setting to the actual headquarter of the government
office, but If I had to change the setting, then I would give wrong descriptions to the building and the
rooms inside as described thoroughly and sarcastically by the author.

Concert Promoter Is Live Nation
but also creates connections that can make an artist more successful as a band with collaborators than
just by themselves. It cannot be certain if this will be as easy and profitable as sharing music through a
major label, but it is a way for an artist to keep their rights to their songs and work (Cayari, 2011).
This solution is a very risky one, but it can be very successful as well. Becoming a YouTube star leads
to more lucrative avenues such as TV appearances and movie deals (Curien Moreau, 2009). Whatever
the outcome, the success and money will take longer than if the artist were given a contract.
In order to get away from the demeaning obligations of the 360deal some artists have signed instead
with concert promoters, another ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The other advantages to signing with Live Nation is that they are an Artist Nation; this means they
believe in being a partner to the artist and assist in managing a variety of rights, fanbases, touring, and
provide direct connection to fans. Unlike the 360 deal, Artist Nation does not confiscate publishing
from the artist, which is a big revenue stream typically. In turn, this provides the artist with more
income. The major areas that Live Nation profits from are: recorded music, merchandising, fan sites
and ticketing, broadcast rights, sponsorship, marketing, and digital rights management. This may seem
like a lot, but the percentage they take is about 6% in each of these areas. The biggest percentage Live
Nation takes is from ticket sales because that is what they are known for and that is the money making
part of the business for most artists. A disadvantage to Live Nation is they lack licensing and
distribution like record labels however, sometimes a deal can be made through a record label just for
distribution purposes. Although Live Nation lacks in certain areas that major labels have; they are
making agreements with other companies such as, Ticketmaster, to help their artists as well as
themselves to become successful. One of these strategies involves ticketing and fan clubs. The core of
the music industry is not albums or singles, but live performance; hence why Live Nation is

Smoking Cannabis Virtually Doubles the Risk of Developing...
The media are often guilty of presenting studies in a way that leads to misinterpretation by the public.
A recent BBC news article reads Cannabis use raises psychosis risk Study and the Daily Mail warns
Cannabis use doubles risk of psychosis for teenagers . Such headlines give the impression that there
has been a clear causal relationship found between smoking cannabis and the development of mental
illnesses (News, 2011; Hope, 2011).
Kuepper et al. (2011), the study referred to above, reported that cannabis use is a risk factor for the
development of incident psychotic symptoms (short lasting individual symptoms). They found that
cannabis users were almost twice as likely to report incident psychotic symptoms (adjusted odds ratio

Due to the lack of experimental control, large participant samples are required in order to look for a
connection between cannabis use and psychosis. This further reduces researchers ability do large scale
studies looking directly at the effects of cannabis use. It is not economically feasible to diagnose an
follow a large cohort of participants using objective clinical measures. This means that the validity of
the research is stretched further, as cost effective means of measuring psychoticism and cannabis do
not use direct measures. Psychoticism is generally inferred by way of self reports from individuals on
whether they have experienced psychotic symptoms. This might introduce confounds, and further
reduces the likelihood that self reports of incidence psychotic symptoms are truly indicative of
cannabis being a causal risk in developing a mental illness. For example, participants may become
aware of the purpose of the study and worry about drug use having an effect, thus start to actively look
for and remember such incidences, more so than non users.
Due to ethical, funding and time constraints, it is incredibly difficult for researchers to get a clear
picture of the effect cannabis use has on the development of mental illnesses such as schizophrenia.
The field of research is marred with problems, there is still

Human Factors From United Airlines Flight 173 And Flight 232
The aviation industry has emerged to be one of the more efficient and safest way to travel across the
world. Taking in consideration that there are thousands of people that have car accidents across the
United States daily and sadly some of them end up being fatal. When an aircraft accident happens, it is
normally that followed and investigated by several government and federal agencies in order to take
all the details, human factors and determing factors that contributed to the accident. Given that more
than 70% of the aircraft accidents are caused by human error, it is important for the FAA and the
NTSB to conduct the investigation to determine if human factors were present and to issue
recommendations that will prevent more accidents from the same nature. On this case study, it will be
discussed two flights that from United Airlines Flight 173 and Flight 232. On both occasions, we can
see the CRM skills taken by the flight crew managing an aircraft emergency landing and it will be
taken the consideration the proper action and improper coordination taken by the captain. According
to the Skybrary (2017) Crew Resource Management is the effective use of all available resources for
flight crew personnel to assure a safe and efficient operation, reducing error, avoiding stress and
increasing efficiency. (para.1) This training was developed NASA in 1979, which its main focus was

Arizona State Sun Devils Case Study
Arizona State Sun Devils Pacific 12 Conference (Pac 12) South (2014 record: 10 3) Head Coach:
Todd Graham Offense: In spite of the fact the Sun Devils had a solid record on the 2014 season, that
record might be a little deceiving given the fact the Sun Devils had a season of highs and lows and
probably weren t as good as its record indicated. That said, the offense certainly did its part by racking
up solid numbers across the board. The team scored 36.9 PPG while taking good care of the ball with
only 13 turnovers throughout the season. Going into this season, Coach Graham has a couple of key
players returning on offense. At the quarterback position, much of last year ended up being a
platooning situation between since departed Taylor Kelly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, that might not be good enough in the Pac 12. Most of the teams in this conference can put
points on the board at will, which is going to put a lot of pressure on Coach Graham and his players to
find creative ways to score. Defense: In 2014, the Sun Devils defense was too porous. They gave up
27.9 PPG and 417 YPG with most of it coming through the air. The one thing that saved this defense
from looking rather ordinary was its ability to get after the ball. With 27 forced turnovers (5 returned
for TDs), they just had a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Coach Graham does not
have the luxury of assuming his team will be so fortunate to come up with so many turnovers this
season. Instead, he is going to have to hope that the return of three top defensive players will bring the
unit much needed experience and leadership. Among the players returning are SR DB Jordon Simone,
SR LB Antonio Longino and JR LB Salamo Fiso. Simone was second on the team in tackles will 100
while Longino added 94 tackles and Fiso accounted for 83 of them to go along with 3.5 sacks. The
Sun Devils will have to find a reliable defensive lineman to replace Marcus Hardison who led the
team in sacks with

The Life of Alexander Plutarch
In Life of Alexander, Plutarch employs extensive methods to depict Alexander as a man of both great
ambition and self control, despite Alexander s degeneration of character by the end of his life. In the
modern world, the regression from just conqueror to unrestrained tyrant is completely congruent with
the contemporary concept of ambiguous morality. In the ancient world, however, everything is
expressed and understood in clear constructs; therefore, one s character cannot change within a
lifetime it can only be revealed. The history of Alexander the Great is well known, so Plutarch has to
address common knowledge and beliefs while persuading the audience to believe in his portrayal of
Alexander. Plutarch establishes Alexander as a great ruler whose out of character actions are made
sensible with reinterpretations of situations and are neutralized with stories proving his positive traits.
Through these methods, Plutarch successfully resolves the issue of Alexander s conflicts in character
and is able to create a convincible and consistent character. Plutarch s portrayal of Alexander as a just
king is challenged by the infamous destruction of Thebes. Alexander leading his army to destroy
Thebes and massacre its population is characteristic of a cruel tyrant, not a just king. To resolve this,
Plutarch describes Alexander as wishing to give her still a chance to repent of what she had done, he
merely demanded the surrender of Phoenix and Prothytes and proclaimed an amnesty

International Regulation Of Copyright Law Essay
1) Introduction:
Trademark: Trademark recognizable features, expression, or other symbol that indicates a particular
product or service, and legally it apart from all other products. It also serves to only identify the
product or service from a particular company, and the recognition of ownership of the company brand.
The protected products are generally considered to be a form of property. Most countries have
agencies through which companies can have their products with trademarks. One of the main goals of
a product is protected to protect the product from used without the permission of the original society.
Most countries have patent laws that are designed to defend against patent breach. International
regulation of copyright is much more complex, because there is no universally recognized Patent
Office
Patent: A patent is basically a government license which provides the holder the exclusive right to
process, design or new invention for a specific time period. Patent applications are usually handled by
government agencies. You can use a patent to protect his invention. It provides you the opportunity to
take legal steps against anyone who makes, used, sold or imported without your permission.
To obtain a patent, your invention must be all of the following: Something that can be used or New
Inventive not just a simple modification of something that already exists
You cannot patent the invention, certain types, including: way of doing

Safety Issues for Women Traveling Solo
Stay Safe But Don t Stay Home
By Zahara Heckscher
Zaraha Heckscher(left) with a Musonda friend in Zambia from Safety Issues for Women Traveling
Solo: Stay Safe But Don t Stay Home.
Women are frequently warned about independent international travel. Unfortunately, it is true that
women are much more likely than men to be the victims of sexual harassment and sexual assault. In
virtually every country I have visited I heard from female travelers and volunteers who had been
subjected to frequent come ons, unwanted touching, or inappropriate comments, in the words of one
Peace Corps volunteer. Harassment and assault range from verbal harassment, to crude propositions,
to groping (especially by men in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(In India, a toe ring on your second toe means you re not available.) Many volunteers learn strategies
from local women. In Mexico, for example, women often sit together, even if they don t know each
other. Other tips, in the words of previous travelers, include:
Be careful about letting your guard down while on vacation. Travel with a group at night. Before
you leave home, talk to other women who have traveled in the countries you plan to visit. The in
country program director cautioned us against looking or staring at the men for too long at a time; this
could be misinterpreted since the women in the local villages were taught not to make eye contact
with the men. Be ready to give up some freedoms that you are used to at home. Females must take
care with their dealings with any male older than 14 and younger than 75. I was often misunderstood
at first and didn t realize that plain speaking and looking at a man directly when speaking to him could
be misinterpreted as flirting. I learned quickly to be very formal and to always involve several people
in any conversation. Don t be afraid to ask about the security situation where you are posted and find
out about any prior incidents that may have occurred in the area. When it comes to your life, you can t
be too cautious. No matter what you do or don t do, remember that it is not your fault if you are
assaulted. If you are raped or assaulted, it is most

Case Study Of IBM Under-Dog Takes Over The Big-Blue
Under Dog takes over The Big Blue
By:
Arkesh Sharma
EPGP 06 158
Executive Summary:
I presently work for IBM. The case discusses how IBM s famous hardware division of personal
computing/Thinkpad was sold off to a Chinese firm Lenovo who had no presence in the market and
who was hardly known for laptops. Its only presence was in the Chinese market and no where else in
the world. The case further discusses the Merger and Acquisition of the hardware division of IBM and
what challenges were faced by Lenovo and what should be done to overcome those problems.
Introduction of the company:
IBM:

These regulatory developments have broadened the scope of permissible acquisitions and highlight
China s ongoing commitment to honoring its WTO undertakings. However, there are still regulations
having a substantial and generally adverse impact on mergers and acquisitions by foreign companies
targeting domestic companies in China. What are they are what lead them to exist?
4.1 Background of the acquiring firm
The foreign investor must be a listed or public company, have had a clean record for at least three
years, and be domiciled and listed in jurisdictions with sound regulatory systems. The domestic
company or its shareholders engage a consultant registered in China to conduct due diligence on the
foreign company. An extensive filing by the foreign company, including security interests on its assets
and a report on trading in its shares during the previous six months is also required.
The M A regulations substantially restrict deal terms. They mandate required investor qualifications
and identify the applicable approval process. The regulations restrict the permissible types of
consideration and payment schedules, and impose valuation requirements that may impact on pricing.
Many practices common in other jurisdictions are restricted in China. The regulations limit the parties

Mountain Man Brewing Co.
Case 2: Mountain Man Brewing Company Prepared for: Marketing 181 Date: February 9, 2011
Question 1: There are many factors that have enabled MMBC to create a strong brand. These include:
taste, perceived quality, image, tradition, and authenticity. Taste is achieved through a selection of rare
Bavarian hops and unusual strains of barley creating a defined Mountain Man quality. In addition,
Mountain Man Lagers distinctively bitter flavor and higher alcohol content sets this beer apart from its
competitors, which uniquely contributes to the company s brand equity. To complement the richer
stronger taste, a dark colored bottle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Our first reason for not introducing the light beer is because it goes against the company culture.
Many members of upper management do not support Chris s decision to launch a light beer, creating
disjointed opinions and feelings that will reduce output or the willingness to create a shared goal. For
instance, John Fader, the Vice President of sales feels that the light beer will take away time,
resources, and attention from their Lager. In order to produce a new product, the whole company must
think in a like minded manner. Chris s decision is based on optimistic assumptions instead of facts. If
he implements his decision MMBC may alienate its most loyal customers, which would destroy its
53% brand loyalty. Brand equity is increasingly important so destroying it would make MMBC less
competitive. Also, MMBC s authenticity comes from its Lager product. Therefore by altering the
product to appeal to a more general audience it would diminish the created authenticity. It is apparent
from Exhibit 6B, consumers prefer mainstream light beer brands such as Bud Light, Miller Light,
Coors Light. Thus, MMBC (as a non mainstream brand) would have difficulty penetrating this market.
In addition, we feel

  • 2. Overcoming Adversity I used to think that I was all that. In elementary school and middle school I didn t have to work hard and was able to get good grades without putting forth a lot of effort. My personal philosophy was that if I worked hard in class during the school day, then when I got home from school, my time should be my own. I had been successful following this belief system for years, and then, I enrolled in AP World History (APWH) in the tenth grade. My experiences in APWH changed my entire outlook on my role as a student and caused me to reevaluate my perspective on the things that were important to me. I had heard that APWH was going to require a lot of work, but I was sure that it would be no different than any other honors level class that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By the mid term point of Fall semester, I was depressed and ready to give up. I was disappointed in myself because I was still failing despite dropping out of football. My parents refused to let me succumb to the poor me syndrome. This was the time to show my strength of character. I needed to prove to myself that I could overcome this obstacle. I prayed to God to give me guidance on how to get back on track. I started staying up later to do the reading. I paid more attention in class. I joined a study group. As I put forth more of an effort, my grade slowly began to improve. By the end of the fall semester, I had raised my F to a D . I kept my focus during the spring semester. I ended the year with a 77% in the class. Although I didn t receive an A or a B, I received something more valuable: self respect and self esteem. I learned that I must always do what is in my best interest even if there are others who tell me that I am making wrong decisions. My work ethic is now the complete opposite of what it was in my 10th grade year. I have learned many life lessons: I take my studies seriously, I know that I am capable of being successful in college level classes, and most importantly, I have learned the value of hard work and ... • 3. To Obey or Disobey Obedience is an age old expectation that rulers, priests, and government officials have required for years from their subjects. Most of the time individuals follow their leaders without question. This is the case because the population from which obedience is required believes that they continue to have a choice. When, for whatever reason this belief is lost, some individuals will begin to exhibit an increasing disobedience to the requirement. This often increases to the point of violence or, the case of a country, war. While there are all types of disobedience, this paper will discuss civil disobedience and the social pressure often associated with it. In The Perils of Obedience, Milgram tells of a woman that the last shock she administered to the learner was extremely painful and reiterates that she did not want to be responsible for any harm to him . In Barry Levinson s film Wag the Dog and Michael Moore s documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 , it is clear that the perspectives in which the audience views the world create particular conflicts. In both texts, the conflicting perspectives arise from the way the naïve public views the world and the way that the government and media view the world through their particular agendas. In Wag the Dog , the plot relies on the alleged sexual impropriety of the president and the way in which particular political powers and the media intervene. The audience is extremely aware of this through the use of the Albanian girl scene where through filming and editing, the American people are manipulated into believing a lie. Levinson uses dramatic irony here to emphasise this point to the viewers, who know what the public in the film do not. Brean s assertion of we are giving them what they want is indicative of a public who remember the slogans but don t remember the wars . As Brean satirises the perspective of the outsider s the view in which the American people see the world is seen, especially through the use of the Albanian girl where the audience literally sees what the audience in the film sees and believes. As Brean uses repetition in referring to the Gulf War of 91, the audience witnesses the verisimilitude that the public so easily succumbs to. Though, his character is portrayed in a different light at the end of the film through the death of Stanley Motts. In this scene his character shifts to that of a menacing, powerful figure. Even though the audience is aware of his significance and power throughout the entire film, the fact that he is the one that orders for Motts to be killed further extrapolates on the idea that the public is naïve to image, as even the audience watching the film believes that the character of Brean would not commit such an act. With the gamut of conveniences that it allows, technology has become seamlessly integrated into the social infrastructure at almost every level. More importantly, the fear of these surveillance cameras forces Winston to repress any animalistic urges he has, such as the urge to express his libido for Julia. In the book, The outsiders, there are two groups of people that are called Greasers and Socs. Characters in the novel tend to believe that Greasers are troublemakers and Socs are the higher class teens. Socs are a disgrace because of their actions and attitudes. The Socs are a disgrace because they beat up greasers based off of their money issues and the side of a city they live on. If you are someone who is rich like a soc and is in a better environment and situation you are expected to be more respectful. Teens with a strong foundation are more responsible, and kids who have no parents or anyone that is a positive role model end up doing more of what they want. Kids that grow up on a wrong side of town tend to make the most crimes based off of how they were raised. As a Soc, they are being a disgrace by the way they act. Most people in this novel think that Greasers are a disgrace, but no one notices how badly the Socs treat Greasers. The socs bully greasers and that could be causing more anger to build in the greasers that cause them to act out. Socs verbally and physically abuse them, it s one thing to steal but it s another when you hurt someone mentally or physically on purpose. • 12. Drought Is A Natural Hazard Abstract: Drought is a natural hazard due to adverse climatic changes which affects various sectors like environment, society and economy. It occurs not only because of the scarcity of rainfall but also due to the inefficient water resource management. Studies indicate that over 30% of the entire land surface of earth is affected by drought. As a developing country, majority of Indian population depends directly or indirectly on agriculture. So the abnormal monsoon precipitation, causing loss of agricultural production, can highly influence the human life. In this paper, Karur district in Tamil Nadu which often has a very low annual rainfall is taken as the study area for drought monitoring. The technological evolution in remote sensing over the past few decades has opened a new era in the field of drought monitoring. Thus, use of remote sensing and GIS helps in developing early warnings about drought conditions which will be useful for planning the strategies for relief work. Drought analysis can be performed by calculating different drought indices like Standard Precipitation Index (SPI), Standardized Water Level Index (SWI) and Normalized Differences Vegetation Index (NDVI).Rainfall data from 2000 2009 is used to compute the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) in different time scales which is used in meteorological drought monitoring. There is a spillway that takes water through the Trinity River to Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth. This year has been a rough year for Lake Bridgeport with three digit temperatures and draining water to the other lakes. Since one of the purposes to build Lake Bridgeport was for storage, The Tarrant County water district approved to let out 20,000 acre feet of water from Lake Bridgeport to prevent the other lakes to be low. But 2013 is anything but a normal year. Today, what once was a scenic lake is covered in chest high weeds. Boaters and fisherman enjoy going to Lake Bridgeport during the summer. But in the summer of 2013 the boat ramps were unusable so the number of residents going to the lake dropped. There are dead fish floating to the shoreline as well as many other wildlife animals. The lake tested positive for Zebra Mussel larva, which is shell like creatures that are very sharp and stick to boats, anchors and docks. The Mussels are very dangerous for the lake environment, but they also eat bacteria so they could help the lake water clear up. The building has capitals with two volutes, which was very common in the Ionic order. Each column consists of the capital, shaft, and base, which is analogous to the basic form of the Ionic order. The most important feature of the Ionic order is the frieze, which is usually carved with relief sculpture arranged in a continuous pattern around the building (Hemingway, 2003). However, the feature was not applied to this building. Both in the Doric and the Ionic, the column are fluted but these columns have smooth surfaces. During my research, I found that many architectures identified as the Ionic order style, actually have smooth surface columns as well (ex. the Longworth House Office Building, Thomas Jefferson Memorial). Power struggles are widespread and unique in context, but these struggles are not special in the presence or complexity of the self versus other conflict within them. One of the strongest examples for this assertion is the First Crusades. At face value, any observer can immediately take notice of the separation between those of Christian faith and those of Islamic faith. If additional diligence in research is provided, any one of these observers begins to find the endlessly deeper self versus other struggles present on both sides, specifically amongst the Christian military. Numerous accounts from Christian actors serve to support this argument; the recorded thoughts of both soldiers and intellectuals detail the surprising amount of divisions between what should be the Christian united. The relationship between the self and the other present in the mindset of the actors of the Crusades shows that a definite, dynamic, yet necessary division between all groups of people exists, no matter the already established bonds of any collective. One of the most complicated pieces to the self versus other puzzle is the dynamic nature of its idealistic segregation. Each person involved with the First Crusade had an undeniable loyalty to God. The hallway walls were constructed of glass, allowing me to take in the fantastic views. At that moment, I felt inspired and grateful that one extremely wealthy man had left such a glorious place for future generations to enjoy. Luckily for me I ended up in the North pavilion, where Italian art before 1700 is housed. The first piece of art I focused on was the painting titled Allegory of Fortune by Dosso Dossi. Dosso painted it around 1530 in Italy. The painting depicts a man and a woman, the man is sitting with a robe over his lap and the woman is sitting with her breasts exposed and her body positioned such that you can t see full frontal nudity. The woman represents fortune, and she is holding a cornucopia, representing the bounty she may bring. She is sitting on a bubble which denotes that her favors are fleeting. The man in the painting represents chance. He is looking longingly at fortune as he deposits lottery tickets into a golden urn. During the time of the painting, civic lotteries were becoming popular in Italy. It is believed that the painting s probable patron was Isabella d Este, Marchioness of Mantua. Isabella s emblem included a bundle of lots, signifying her personal experience with varying fortunes. One interesting fact about this painting is that it was found and purchased for a modest sum at a flea market. The seven foot painting was strapped to the top of a car and taken to Christie s ... During this period when Beethoven had almost stopped working on music creation, he was living off funds from his earlier compositions, and symphonies. • 27. Reconstruction Failed For African Americans Reconstruction failed for African Americans. By the 1890 s all optimism that came as a result of the Constitutional rights guaranteed to them by the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments was gone. Their reality, particularly for those in the South, was one of lynchings, Jim Crowe laws, and voting restrictions. They faced discrimination, segregation, limited educational opportunities, and a tenant farming system that only slightly differed from slavery. In the early twentieth century, visionaries such as Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, and Marcus Garvey recognized the urgent need for change. These great leaders were in agreement that action was required to uplift the African American race. However, their philosophies on how to approach it were vastly different. Born a slave on a Virginia farm, Booker Taliaferro Washington (1856 1915) rose to become one of the most influential African American intellectuals of the late 19th century. He was nine years old when the Civil War ended. He worked hard as a young child and at 16, he left home to attend Hampton Institute. One of the few black high schools in the South, it focused on industrial and agricultural training while maintaining an extremely structured curriculum that stressed discipline and high moral character. Washington thrived in that environment. He eventually went on to head a new school in Tuskegee, Alabama. Hester Prynne, from The Scarlet Letter, is punished for committing a crime but she matures and understands why she is being punished. On the other hand, the person she commits this crime with, Reverend Dimmesdale, holds his tongue forcing him to always think about it. Therefore, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote The Scarlet Letter to express that the journey one faces in the past is irrelevant to the decisions and actions of the present. Because he is guilty of the same thing as Hester, he also interprets a meteor as a sign from the heavenly father. Richard Hull states, Dimmesdale and Hester consider the meanings they attach to things to be meant by a sender, but both the Enlightenment narrator and Pearl deny such meanings were sent. Thus there are two interpretations of interpretation (Hull). He talks about the two ways of interpreting things, believing they are signs or dismissing them completely. Hester believes her child is a sign as Dimmesdale believes the meteoroid is his sign, and then the narrator and Pearl decline the idea of messages being sent from a higher power. Dimmesdale may have been hallucinating when he saw this shooting star but he still depicts it as a message from God. The narrator says, We impute it, therefore, solely to the disease in his own eye and heart that the minister, looking upward to the zenith, beheld there the appearance of an immense letter the letter A marked out in lines of dull red light (116). There is a motif of the scarlet letter and the author uses it to disclose that Dimmesdale is guilty of the same crime as Hester. They are both guilty but only one of them is convicted, Hester. • 30. Epic Poetry By Homer And Catullus Essay From ancient Greek to Roman literature, styles and genres in writing changed drastically. The Greeks were adamant on showing their extensive knowledge of myth, often referencing the most obscure myths. The gods mentioned in their poems often had crucial roles necessary for developing the plot, or they were the reason the story began at all. The Romans however were very educated, and showed this in their works by referencing older Greek literature or authors instead of direct myths. Another drastic difference in the divergent genres, namely epics and lyrics, is the expression of love, which through Homer and Catullus, shows us how love can be expressed as erotic, familial, or as a love of place by the protagonists and secondary characters, despite whether it is the primary or secondary theme. In Greek literature a prominent author is Homer, whom we don t know if actually existed or if Homer is a pseudonym for a collective group of writers. Homer is popular for writing epic poetry, which follows the heroic journey of the protagonist through a lengthy narrative. In epics, the poet focuses on the main character s search for kleos, the only thing a proper hero requires. In the Iliad, while the search for kleos is a major theme, love is also portrayed in many different respects. The love shown between Hector and his wife Andromache is one very strong example of the theme of love. At this time, love was not something people strived to achieve. Marriages were often used to ... Choosing to translate His Excellency, The Ambassador, by Ghazzi AlQussaibi, was my primary pick for its popularity among Arab readers around the world. Some critics claim that the novel is actually a true story of an Arab politician, who was a close friend of the author. The author was actually a political figure for most of his life, we find almost all of his novels were centered on the life and work of politicians. When I started to translate this novel, I faced several obstacles ranging from linguistic, cultural, and political challenges. The setting of the novel was not accurate to the real life. At the beginning, Yusuf Alfalaki arrived at the Saint James Palace to meet the prime minister of the United Kingdom at his office. Most people know that the office of the prime minister is actually at the 10 Downing Street, and there is no office for the prime minister at the Saint James Palace. Saint James Palace is a historical building that is still occupied by some the royal family. So why would the author give inaccurate historical account of places, even though he was once ambassador for long in the United Kingdom? It cannot be certain if this will be as easy and profitable as sharing music through a major label, but it is a way for an artist to keep their rights to their songs and work (Cayari, 2011). This solution is a very risky one, but it can be very successful as well. Becoming a YouTube star leads to more lucrative avenues such as TV appearances and movie deals (Curien Moreau, 2009). Whatever the outcome, the success and money will take longer than if the artist were given a contract. In order to get away from the demeaning obligations of the 360deal some artists have signed instead with concert promoters, another ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The other advantages to signing with Live Nation is that they are an Artist Nation; this means they believe in being a partner to the artist and assist in managing a variety of rights, fanbases, touring, and provide direct connection to fans. Unlike the 360 deal, Artist Nation does not confiscate publishing from the artist, which is a big revenue stream typically. In turn, this provides the artist with more income. The major areas that Live Nation profits from are: recorded music, merchandising, fan sites and ticketing, broadcast rights, sponsorship, marketing, and digital rights management. This may seem like a lot, but the percentage they take is about 6% in each of these areas. The biggest percentage Live Nation takes is from ticket sales because that is what they are known for and that is the money making part of the business for most artists. A disadvantage to Live Nation is they lack licensing and distribution like record labels however, sometimes a deal can be made through a record label just for distribution purposes. Although Live Nation lacks in certain areas that major labels have; they are making agreements with other companies such as, Ticketmaster, to help their artists as well as themselves to become successful. One of these strategies involves ticketing and fan clubs. The core of the music industry is not albums or singles, but live performance; hence why Live Nation is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Smoking Cannabis Virtually Doubles the Risk of Developing... The media are often guilty of presenting studies in a way that leads to misinterpretation by the public. A recent BBC news article reads Cannabis use raises psychosis risk Study and the Daily Mail warns Cannabis use doubles risk of psychosis for teenagers . Such headlines give the impression that there has been a clear causal relationship found between smoking cannabis and the development of mental illnesses (News, 2011; Hope, 2011). Kuepper et al. (2011), the study referred to above, reported that cannabis use is a risk factor for the development of incident psychotic symptoms (short lasting individual symptoms). They found that cannabis users were almost twice as likely to report incident psychotic symptoms (adjusted odds ratio ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the lack of experimental control, large participant samples are required in order to look for a connection between cannabis use and psychosis. This further reduces researchers ability do large scale studies looking directly at the effects of cannabis use. It is not economically feasible to diagnose an follow a large cohort of participants using objective clinical measures. This means that the validity of the research is stretched further, as cost effective means of measuring psychoticism and cannabis do not use direct measures. Psychoticism is generally inferred by way of self reports from individuals on whether they have experienced psychotic symptoms. This might introduce confounds, and further reduces the likelihood that self reports of incidence psychotic symptoms are truly indicative of cannabis being a causal risk in developing a mental illness. For example, participants may become aware of the purpose of the study and worry about drug use having an effect, thus start to actively look for and remember such incidences, more so than non users. Due to ethical, funding and time constraints, it is incredibly difficult for researchers to get a clear picture of the effect cannabis use has on the development of mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. The field of research is marred with problems, there is still ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Arizona State Sun Devils Case Study Arizona State Sun Devils Pacific 12 Conference (Pac 12) South (2014 record: 10 3) Head Coach: Todd Graham Offense: In spite of the fact the Sun Devils had a solid record on the 2014 season, that record might be a little deceiving given the fact the Sun Devils had a season of highs and lows and probably weren t as good as its record indicated. That said, the offense certainly did its part by racking up solid numbers across the board. The team scored 36.9 PPG while taking good care of the ball with only 13 turnovers throughout the season. Going into this season, Coach Graham has a couple of key players returning on offense. At the quarterback position, much of last year ended up being a platooning situation between since departed Taylor Kelly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, that might not be good enough in the Pac 12. Most of the teams in this conference can put points on the board at will, which is going to put a lot of pressure on Coach Graham and his players to find creative ways to score. Defense: In 2014, the Sun Devils defense was too porous. They gave up 27.9 PPG and 417 YPG with most of it coming through the air. The one thing that saved this defense from looking rather ordinary was its ability to get after the ball. With 27 forced turnovers (5 returned for TDs), they just had a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Coach Graham does not have the luxury of assuming his team will be so fortunate to come up with so many turnovers this season. Instead, he is going to have to hope that the return of three top defensive players will bring the unit much needed experience and leadership. Among the players returning are SR DB Jordon Simone, SR LB Antonio Longino and JR LB Salamo Fiso. Simone was second on the team in tackles will 100 while Longino added 94 tackles and Fiso accounted for 83 of them to go along with 3.5 sacks. The Sun Devils will have to find a reliable defensive lineman to replace Marcus Hardison who led the team in sacks with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Life of Alexander Plutarch In Life of Alexander, Plutarch employs extensive methods to depict Alexander as a man of both great ambition and self control, despite Alexander s degeneration of character by the end of his life. In the modern world, the regression from just conqueror to unrestrained tyrant is completely congruent with the contemporary concept of ambiguous morality. In the ancient world, however, everything is expressed and understood in clear constructs; therefore, one s character cannot change within a lifetime it can only be revealed. The history of Alexander the Great is well known, so Plutarch has to address common knowledge and beliefs while persuading the audience to believe in his portrayal of Alexander. Plutarch establishes Alexander as a great ruler whose out of character actions are made sensible with reinterpretations of situations and are neutralized with stories proving his positive traits. Through these methods, Plutarch successfully resolves the issue of Alexander s conflicts in character and is able to create a convincible and consistent character. Plutarch s portrayal of Alexander as a just king is challenged by the infamous destruction of Thebes. Alexander leading his army to destroy Thebes and massacre its population is characteristic of a cruel tyrant, not a just king. To resolve this, Plutarch describes Alexander as wishing to give her still a chance to repent of what she had done, he merely demanded the surrender of Phoenix and Prothytes and proclaimed an amnesty ... • 49. Mountain Man Brewing Co. Case 2: Mountain Man Brewing Company Prepared for: Marketing 181 Date: February 9, 2011 Question 1: There are many factors that have enabled MMBC to create a strong brand. These include: taste, perceived quality, image, tradition, and authenticity. Taste is achieved through a selection of rare Bavarian hops and unusual strains of barley creating a defined Mountain Man quality. In addition, Mountain Man Lagers distinctively bitter flavor and higher alcohol content sets this beer apart from its competitors, which uniquely contributes to the company s brand equity. To complement the richer stronger taste, a dark colored bottle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Our first reason for not introducing the light beer is because it goes against the company culture. Many members of upper management do not support Chris s decision to launch a light beer, creating disjointed opinions and feelings that will reduce output or the willingness to create a shared goal. For instance, John Fader, the Vice President of sales feels that the light beer will take away time, resources, and attention from their Lager. In order to produce a new product, the whole company must think in a like minded manner. Chris s decision is based on optimistic assumptions instead of facts. If he implements his decision MMBC may alienate its most loyal customers, which would destroy its 53% brand loyalty. Brand equity is increasingly important so destroying it would make MMBC less competitive. Also, MMBC s authenticity comes from its Lager product. Therefore by altering the product to appeal to a more general audience it would diminish the created authenticity. It is apparent from Exhibit 6B, consumers prefer mainstream light beer brands such as Bud Light, Miller Light, Coors Light. Thus, MMBC (as a non mainstream brand) would have difficulty penetrating this market. In addition, we feel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
