Dale Russakoff
The Prize was excellently written by Dale Russakoff. In this short non fiction, she describes the
current state of Newark, New Jersey s public education system. Newark has one of the poorest
education systems and because of that students have experienced failure upon failure. Many have
worked to improve this system including philanthropist, administrators, teachers, and even members
of the community. Through The Prize, she shows the different perspectives of individuals who have
these titles and what they did or believe they can do in order to improve the system. It is very
interesting how so many people have different ideas, though they are connected in the same system,
and no one seems to listen to the other, which shows the lack of communication ... Show more content

For example, Princess Williams was a Newark native kindergarten teacher who cared about where her
students were going and how they would get there. She addressed each student s needs individually.
Teachers who thought of education in the same ways as she did believed If you want to change public
education, you have to attack the district buildings (47). Many believed that the governor, Chris
Christie, wanted to completely change Newark s education system by bringing new people and new
ways in, but it actually would have been much easier to fix the problems at hand. For example, they
could have educated teaches to be better, implemented new resources into district schools instead of
creating more charter schools, or hire more counselors to deal with grieving children. It is easy to see
that all reformers had a common educational goal for Newark, but they were different in how they
handled it. Reformers like Princess Williams worked from the bottom up. She started change by
showing what worked better in her classroom at first and then transferred those strategies to a larger
context such as the Avon BRICK School. Reformers like Mark Zuckerberg worked from the top
down. He started by investing in the politicians who would change the school system at large by
changing administrators first, then teachers, and then continued work from the core of the problem. By

Abstract:
This labaratory report shows that when presented with an unknown chemical substance, identification
of that substance is revealed through a seires of tests that involve chemical and physical properties of
that substance.
Problem:
You are given an unknown chemical substance that you need to be able to identify. How are you going
to do this? The compound can be either harmful or toxic, so what you need to do is test all of its
physical and chemical properties, and then find out the synthesis of the substance. Qualitative testing
and quantitative testing is essential in discovering what the unknown is. ... Show more content on

6. Since I mixed my unknown with and it formed a percipitate, I am able to conclude it is insoluble. I
compared the results with other anions from my table of solubilities, and phosphate s results are the
only ones that matched with mine, but sulfate s did not. This helped me to figure out the known anion.
Cation Percipitate Test #3
1. For this percipiate test with my unknown H chemical, I mixed it with , or Copper III nitrate. The
purpose of this test was to determine whether my unknown formed a percipitate with this compound,
and to eliminate cations.
2. If the reaction with is insoluble, it would allow me to eliminate suspected cations to get closer to the
real cation. Since my cation for my unknown is soluble in most reactions, I attempted to mix it with
Copper (II) nitrate, and compare them with the results of phosphate mixing with Copper (II) nitrate.
3. This test requires a spot plate cleaned with distilled water. Then, after adding 2 drops of to one
section of the plate, add 2 drops of unknown H. Record results, and then compare with result of
phosphate and . This double replacement reaction will yield and . It is possible to separate the two
chemicals because nitrate is soluble and Copper is not.
4. C= cation A=anion

around.
5. By looking at my table of solubilities, it is possible to eliminate most cations because

Starbucks vs Tim Hortons
A Comparison of Starbucks and Tim Hortons
Starbucks and Tim Horton s are two companies that specialize in the food and coffee service
industries. Information about each company, a comparison of how each markets their brand and their
differing distribution methods will be provided.
Starbucks is a premier roaster, marketer and retailer of specialty coffee (Marketline 2012). This
company is globally recognized because of their vast amount of stores, consisting of more than 17,000
retail stores in over 55 countries. Most retail stores are in highly populated areas, like downtown and
suburban centers, office buildings, university campuses and in select rural and off highway locations
(Marketline 2012).

In comparing both Starbucks and Tim Hortons regarding distribution, Starbucks definitely has more of
a wide range of distributors and concentrates mainly on coffee and fresh food distribution. Tim
Hortons concentrates on their beverages as well as bread, dry foods and pastries distribution as well.
So in this sense, they differ a bit in what they distribute and how, as Starbucks uses a lot of licenses
and partnerships while Tim Hortons relies on third party distributors and warehouses. Marketing is
another key aspect that both Starbucks and Tim Hortons do differently for their company. Starbucks
has intensely used technology applications such as for the iphone, in which a customer can use their
mobile phone to make their purchases and it is also connected to the Loyalty Card that Starbucks has
(Baker 2012). Starbucks also uses Facebook and online shopping to market their products. For
example, in regards to social media, that area is part of the Marketing team in the UK and Ireland.
They include customer care and public relations people, as well. Ian Cranna, Vice President for
Marketing, stated that Starbucks believes that customers want genuine and authentic interaction with
the brands they choose to engage in online (Lifting the lid on social... 2012). Starbucks hosted a

China s Influence On The People s Republic Of China
When discussing Communism in regards to climate change and the importance placed upon its
respecting policies it is perhaps best and most relevant to focus upon the People s Republic of China.
This is due to both China s size and influence, along with its ranking as the leading producer of CO2
worldwide. Present day China is not a purely Communist country according to the teachings of
classical/neo Marxism or orthodox Communism. Rather it s more of political Stalinism infused with
market oriented economic reform. Resulting from Deng Xiaoping s attempt to save the country from
Mao Zedong s failing social and economics in the early 1970 s. This is important to note as this
dissertation focuses not on hypothetical political ideological viewpoints, but rather on the real world
implementation of said political ideologies.
The Chinese Communism views regarding the environment encompass the Marxist ideology on
natural resources that natural resources are free have no intrinsic value; their sole purpose is to serve,
not to constrain humans. This holds true today even as China makes strides alongside other global
superpowers such as the United States to curb climate change. This contradiction is accounted for as
the issues of climate change has elevated from a non stream issue to perhaps the biggest and most
important threat to national security. (Ming Teh, H., Liu, T. T. , 2011)
Threats caused from climate change are largely due in part to China s energy production and

The Marine Corp Memorial Essay example
The Marine Corp Memorial
On February 19, 1945 five Marines and one Sailor participated in an event that would forever change
the course of events for the Marine Corps. Undoubtedly one of the most powerful images of the 20th
century is the flag raising atop Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. The flag raising captured the courage,
commitment and honor that these Marines held as they reached the top. These individuals were only
doing what they were instructed to do, but it was the Pulitzer Prize winning photograph that was taken
by Joe Rosenthal that turned this war time event into a world wide historical event. Behind the eagle,
globe and anchor, the flag raising has taken the form of a second emblem for the Marine Corps.

The Marines knew de Weldon s version of the statue and that was the statue they wanted. Ten
professors from American University collectively dismissed de Weldon s sculpture as mediocrity and
called it ordinary, ineffective, and unsculpturesque. Donald De Lu president of the National Sculpture
Society stated that:
Instead of immortalizing the brave Marines who have given their lives for their country, the proposed
design, if permitted to be carried out would be only a source of bitter resentment, violent criticism,
and ridicule.
William Wheeler, later to become the President of the Sculpture Society, submitted as letter to
Secretary of State Forrestal claiming numerous wrong doings by de Weldon. These charges ranged
from shady business practices, expired visa, misrepresenting art, and shipping busts that were still wet
and the suing for damages when they arrived damaged. In late 1947 the monument received another
setback. The Commission of Fine Art, which has the aesthetic approval of all monuments placed in the
Washington area, rejected the memorial because of its size and the location that was selected. Later
that same year the Marine Corps War Memorial Foundation was formed with General Denig as
president and Harry Dash as head of finance. It was later discovered that Harry Dash was embezzling
funds amounting to over $100,000 of the contributions. This setback almost put an end to the
memorial but though the tenacity of a

The Death Of A Shoemaker And The Tea Party By Alfred F....
The American Revolution, today, is seen as a memorable event in history. It was a war against Britain
for the independence of the thirteen colonies that began in 1775. Before the American Revolution
began, there was a lot of conflict between the colonists and British authorities. The British raised
revenue by establishing Acts such as the Stamp Act of 1766. The colonists were against it and tried
revolting against Britain, leading to the Boston Massacre in 1770 of British soldiers shoot colonists
and killing a few men. The colonists also retaliated against the taxations by dressing up as Indians and
throwing tea into the ocean. Parliament began establishing acts known as the intolerable acts, which
led to the revolution. In The Shoemaker and the Tea Party by Alfred F. Young, the author introduces
and describes the life of a shoemaker, George Robert Twelves Hewes, and the events he was a part of
leading up to and after the American Revolution. He shows the different meanings of the Revolution
to people according to their perspective and view on society. The Excerpt from Accounts of George
Robert Twelves Hewes as Told to James Hawkes by James Hawkes is a secondary source of what
Hewes has told Hawkes about his memories of the Boston Massacre. Michael D. Hattem, however,
gives a more contemporary view on the American Revolution in his article, The Historiography of the
American Revolution. Though the course of history, the meaning of the American Revolution and the

Pros And Cons Of Augmented Reality
In this technology era, Augmented Reality (AR) was created to fulfil human curiosity about exploring
beyond the reality. Humans build up the experiences of a real world based on the responses from sense
organs, such as eyes, ears, nose and hands. By replacing real images, using sound and tactility with
computer generated illusions, augmented reality offers us a new way to interact with the physical
world. It creates an altered version of our reality, which is refined with digital information, on the
screen of your own computer or mobile devices. Merging and combining the virtual and the real, it
can create a totally new range of experiences for the users. Nowadays augmented reality have been

The Nitya Ras
The religious performance of Ras Lila is based around the deities Krishna and Radha, two prominent
gods within Hindu culture and religious practice. Beginning with the Nitya Ras, a representation of
Radha and Krishna making love to each other through sacred song and dance, and eventually
progresses to the Lila at the end, which includes text, song, and dance of events from when Krishna
visited earth. (177 178) Halfway through is an intermission during which the Maharaj ji appears
onstage by stepping through a curtain upstage and walks toward one of the corners. The music
becomes quiet and then he pauses before lowering himself to the floor and bowing so that his forehead
touches it. The goal and symbolism of this action is that he doesn t see the performers as actors but
rather 5,000 year old people. (Mason). The Nitya Ras begins with the actors playing Krishna, Radha,
and their servants along with the musicians taking their places on the stage, after which the curtain
raises revealing the performers. Song and dance establishes a joyous mood, and Krishna preaches

Afterwards the gopis, or lovers of Krishna, come forward and touch the feet of Krishna and Radha
before singing songs praising both of them including Vrindavan, Yamuna, and Braj. (Mason). The first
portion concludes with the ras dance that can last anywhere between a few minutes to an hour
depending on the troupe that is performing and where the performance is held. In addition to dance,
there are twenty minute intervals that include dialogue between Krishna and Radha called jhankis.
Jhankis are tableaus during which the actors playing the deities hold in place and pose. (Mason).
These twenty minute intervals allow members of the audience to approach Krishna and Radha in
prayer. This allows the performance to be spiritual and deepens the connection between audience and

Research Paper On H Holmes
H. H. Holmes Henry Herman Holmes was known to many as the first American serial killer. Better
known as just H. H. Holmes, he committed many murders in a suburb on the south side of Chicago
during the late 1800 s. Holmes once admitted to police that he killed 27 people, but many actually
predict that the number of murders he committed is near 200 (Handley). So what is the real number of
people that he killed? Let s take a closer look at the facts of Holmes life, occupation, and the mansion
that he built to determine how many people he may have actually murdered. H. H. Holmes was born
as Herman Mudgett on May 16th 1861, and lived in a rural town in New Hampshire. Holmes had a
privileged childhood and expressed interest in the medical field. He grew up during the period of the
civil war and newspapers were always filled with images of death on the battlefield. These images had
a significant influence on Holmes and he used this as an outlet to practice his desire to become a
doctor. Holmes would capture wild animals and begin experimenting on them by dissecting them with
a pocket knife (Biography.com). This eventually evolved into Holmes entering medical school at the
University of Michigan. This is where he studied and mastered the art of surgical dissection. Holmes
graduated in 1884 at the top of his class as a surgical doctor (Dorfman). After college, Holmes moved
around a bit until he settled down in the south side of Chicago Illinois where he worked for a

Self Efficacy Program For Preventing Osteoporosis Among...
Problem and Purpose In the Randomized control study Self Efficacy Program to Prevent Osteoporosis
Among Asian Immigrants by Qi, Resnick, Smeltzer, and Bausell (2011), the researcher clearly stated
their interest in the problem, that Chinese immigrants have a high incidence of osteoporosis due to the
lack of calcium, vitamin D, and exercise regimens practiced in their country. The purpose of this study
was to use a self efficacy based intervention to increase adoption of behaviors known to prevent
Osteoporosis. (Qi, Resnick, Smeltzer, and Bausell 2011, pg.400) This Self Efficacy theory suggests
that behavior change and maintenance of this change can help acquire a desired outcome the person

and self efficacy increases adherence to health behavior modification is significant in the nursing
world, because it suggests that nurses play a dominant role in patient teaching. As nurses, it is crucial
to utilize patient teaching and supporting skills to ensure quality care and better health outcomes in the
long run. When a patient is educated, it increase s their confidence to participate in treatment,
improves outcomes, and encourages better health habits. Feeling confident in one s abilities is key to
maintaining adherence to medical regimens, and health behaviors. Patient education can be done in
various ways including, PowerPoint s, handouts, and videos. Method This study was conducted as a

The Confederate Flag As A Symbol Of American History
The Confederate Flag Is the confederate flag a true symbol of Heritage or Hate ? Recently there has
been a big debate over the nation for the flying confederate flag. Many states in America s south had
the confederate flag as a part of their state flag, but this has been changed over the past few months.
This confederate flag has been known and flown for many battles over the past century and a half,
which was ever since the start of the Civil War in 1861. Some people today see this flag as a symbol
of hatred and are willing to get rid of it by taking it down. On the other hand, some people see this flag
as a symbol of American history and want to keep this flag flying for heritage. The real question is
who is right and why? On July 10th, 2015 the confederate flag was finally taken down, along with the
pole it flew on. After one hundred and fifty four years this flag will forever be gone. Many people
were happy and glad to see the confederate flag go because it has lately been seen as a symbol of hate.
On June 17th, there was a shooting massacre in Charleston, South Carolina that was related to the
confederate flag. This was all the more reason to take down the flag and to keep people from egging
on hatred toward African American people. On July 8th, 2015 a debate was held to see if the people
wanted the flag to stay flying or to be taken down. By 6:30 p.m., the chamber was engaged in an
extended debate over a Pitts amendment that would remove the battle flag and

Similarities Between Mesopotamia And Harapppa
The Ancient Complex Societies of Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Harappa The ancient complex societies
of Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Harappa all had many different languages, religions, government,
Locations, and architecture. When looking at these societies one may say that there was no sort of
correlation between them but when you dig into the heart of these complex places you notice how
close they all are. We see that their government and cities were built the same also many of their
languages and writings have some sort of resemblance. Many of the ideas that each society believed
and performed had at least one similar quality whether it be a similar dialect or even government.
There is one thing that cannot be denied even though these societies were nowhere close to each other,
there are major aspects that prove they are alike. In all the societies mentioned a major part is religion,
all societies had a religion in addition all were polytheistic, meaning that they worshiped more than
one God or goddess. The differences between them were that they had different names and meanings
for each symbol. Egypt and Mesopotamian societies tented to have a stronger tie to religion than
Harappa. The evidence for this comes when looking at the structures built in their cities. In the outline
of the Egyptian and Mesopotamian societies showed large religious temples, while in Harappa there

Outliers Malcolm Gladwell Essay
I place my beautiful Howarth XL gently back in its case. In the lights it shines brightly, and if the
lights hit it just right, it sparkles and blinds. The Grenadilla wood at first looks flawless and black in
color, yet as one peers closer a rich brown color becomes visible and the wood grains show it is real. I
close the case, and as I walk from the room I turn off the lights. One hour of practice down, thousands
more to go.
Or so I am told. I recently read a book called Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell. In
it Gladwell tells the stories of successful people and explains how they became successful based on
their circumstances, situations, and cultural legacies. In particular, Gladwell wrote a chapter about
what has become to be known as The 10,000 Hour Rule. This rule states that after 10,000 hours of
practice a person, no matter who they are, will be an expert at that skill. Although I agree with

practice is a term used to describe when a person practices attentively. There is no loss of focus in this
type of practicing and the person often pushes themselves to the limits constantly. According to a

The Billy Joel
Billy Joel is one of the best selling solo artists of all time in the United States. Amongst his most
popular songs are Piano Man, We Didn t Start the Fire and She s Always a Woman, all with good
reason. Having written a plethora of memorable songs that could easily be added to the soundtrack of
our lives, Billy Joel s undoubtedly one of the most talented musicians and songwriters of all time.
The musical legend was born William Martin Joel on May 9, 1949 to Howard and Rosalind Joel. He
grew up in the suburb of Hicksville, New York, in a rather musical home. His father was a classically
trained pianist while his mother would sing along to songs. Billy tried his luck with the piano too,
pounding on the keys at a very young age until his mother took him to take piano lessons at age 4. It
wasn t long before he took to it, and eventually he became so skilled that he could have been
considered a professional by the time he was a teenager.
Billy Joel joined a total of 3 bands before becoming a solo artist. The first group he joined was called
the Echoes, a cover band that quickly gained popularity and would later be known as the Lost Souls.
While enjoying the success of his first band, Billy Joel saw the Beatles iconic performance on the Ed

Social Learning Theory And Social Theory
There are many theories in the field of criminology that seek to explain the reasons behind why people
commit crimes. Social process theory is one such theory and asserts that criminal behavior is learned
through interactions with others (Schmalleger, 2012). There are four types of social process theories
including: social learning theory, social control theory, labeling theory, and dramaturgical perspective.
This paper will explore two of the theories including social learning theory and social control theory.
The paper will discuss social process theory and the history of its development, the theory s
importance to criminology, examples of the theory, and any positives or negatives associated with the
theory.
Theory and the History of its Development
Social Learning Theory
Social Learning Theory is the process that occurs through observing the consequences of others and
by determining if such behavior is worth replicating (Wallace, n.d.) Basically this theory suggests that
humans learn by watching others. Social Learning Theory was developed in the 1930 s by Theorists,
Edwin Sutherland, Robert Burgess, Ronald L. Akers, and Daniel Glaser. These theorists developed the

Human Nature and the Social Order II
June 6, 2008
The Wealth of Nations Adam Smith, the author of The Wealth of Nations , was a Scottish moral
philosopher during the Industrial Revolution who was inspired by his surroundings to write about the
field of economics. Being a man of intellect on various types of philosophical views, Smith was able
to portray his passionate feelings about political thought through his well written works. While
publishing his book, Smith became known as the father of modern economics . He was given this
honorary title due to his strong determination of trying to understand how human nature impacts the
social order. Smith was able to use several types of rhetoric styles, such as ... Show more content on

The Impartial Spectator was an imagined being that helps define our own conscience, which would
aid the conduct of our nature on particular thoughts and motifs. After analyzing these various
concepts, Smith was able to acknowledge the importance of allowing individuals to follow their
natural propensity in order to create a national economic growth for the well being of a nation. Based
on this notion about natural propensity, Smith is able to examine why the unexamined life is not worth
living due to the advocates of division of labor. He is able to use these advocates as one of his prime
examples to explain how they sought to maximize their profits or wages by employing themselves and
their capital. Smith states When an animal wants to obtain something either of a man or of another
animal, it has no other means of persuasion but to gain the favour of those whose service it requires...
Man sometimes uses the same arts with his brethren, and when he has no other means of engaging
them to act according to his inclinations, endeavors by every servile and fawning attention to obtain
their good will... However, to do this upon every occasion... at all times in need of the cooperation and
assistance of great multitude, while his whole life is scarce sufficient to gain the friendship of a few
persons (169).

Epipen Research Paper
There is no doubt that the study of chemistry has changed the world dramatically. Under the right
circumstances, many advances in the realm of chemistry can save lives. The EpiPen® has been a
wonderful chemical developed tool, aiding in potentially lethal allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis.
It is important to understand what an EpiPen® is, and how it works to one day save a life if necessary.
What will further be discussed is what an EpiPen® is, how it is made, used, and how it works
chemically in the human body.
The EpiPen® is an auto injecting pen made with epinephrine. Epinephrine commonly known as
adrenaline, is a chemical compound with the formula C9H13NO3. Epinephrine is a sympathomimetic
hormone, meaning a hormone that produces physiological effects in the body from the sympathetic
nervous system.2 Epinephrine, or adrenaline is naturally produced in the adrenal medulla. Upon its
release in the body, causes vasoconstriction or the shrinking of blood vessels, stimulates the heart, and
opens up the bronchi in the lungs. Epinephrine is a compound classified as a Catecholamine. A

shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and fast heart beat. The most serious threat to the human life

Demand And The Price Of Demand
Supply is defined as a stock or amount of something that is available for use; the quantity supplied of
a good or service is an amount that producers plan on selling during a particular time period at a
particular price. (Parkin, 2013) The amount a business can supply does not always equal the amount
sold and so in order for a business to know how much to offer they need to find out the demand;
demand is defined as a particular desire for a commodity, service or other item. It resembles the
amount that customers plan to buy during a certain period of time at a particular price. (Parkin, 2013)
Firstly, demand represents the popularity of a certain good or service and so has a strong relationship
with the quantity supplied. Price, however, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

This graph represents the supply curve following on from the Law of Supply:
Supply is influenced on factors such as the number of producers for that certain good or service,
technological advances, changes in cost and finally a change in indirect taxes.
Equilibrium is the term used when both the quantity supplied equals the quantity demanded. The
relationship between supply and demand is best described in the work of John Locke: The price of any
commodity rises or falls by the proportion of the number of buyer and sellers and that which regulates
the price... [of goods] is nothing else but their quantity in proportion to their rent. (Locke, 1691) Locke
illustrates how prices of things fluctuate depending on the amount there is of them in proportion to
how many there are available; this graph depicts this correlation.

Economic Growth is the key indicator of how successful a country is doing in terms of business; in
order to calculate the economic growth of a country in order to analyse and compare we look at the

Hip Hop Cultural Movement
Hip Hop is both a cultural movement as well as a music genre. Hip hop originated in the
predominantly African American economically depressed South Bronx section of New York City in
the late 1970s. As the hip hop movement began at society s margins, its origins are shrouded in myth,
enigma, and obfuscation. (Alan Light, 2016). In the mid 1980s the next wave of rappers, the new
school, came to prominence. At the forefront was Run D.M.C., a trio of middle class African
Americans who fused rap with hard rock, defined a new style of hip dress, and became staples on
MTV as they brought rap to a mainstream audience. Run D.M.C.

DESIGN OF PRECAST STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS
6.1 Preamble
The precast structural components are manufactured off or on the sites, transported to the site and with
suitable handling and erection procedures, they are assembled so as to form a structural system. The
design should cater to the conditions encountered during the various stages of construction. The
Different types of precast elements manufactured are listed below. Floor and Roof units: Hollow core
slabs, Double T, Single T, and Precast Planks. Precast Beam Girders: can be rectangular, L, inverted T,
I and U shapes. They are usually prestressed with projecting stirrups. Precast Decked Slab Beams:
Reduce number of beams, eliminate cast in place concrete, rapid installation, Shallow superstructure.
Precast concrete columns: may be single or multiple storey height Precast wall panels: Non load
bearing panel (cladding), Load bearing panel: Solid, Hollow core, Ribbed, Sandwich
In this study design of a few precast elements such as Hollow core floor units, RC load bearing solid

The article Mercy Collides With the Law by The Editorial Board is about how one good sommerian,
from Illinois named Greg Schiller went out of his own way and fought for justice for homeless and
brought them in to his house so they had shelter from the cold. I agree with Mr. Schiller and his idea to
take in the homeless, one of the main reasons why I agree with him is because he was very concerned
about other people s safety. For example he was aware it was cold outside with a wind chill of below
15 degrees so he provides a warm place for people to sleep and fights for justice that people need to be

Holden Caulfield
The character of Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in The Rye, is one of the most studied and
theorized protagonists in literature to this day. He leaves critics mystified and speculating on the
depths of the personality and the reasoning behind his actions. The story takes place in New York City
following Holden s explosion from a string of prestigious preparatory schools. Three days of
meandering around the city gives the reader insight to his history and to the question of why, perhaps,
he is less than mentally sound. The better answer to that question is found in the research of the man
who created Holden and his world, J.D. Salinger. The author has had his own bouts with mental illness

soldier said that he remembered Salinger huddled underneath a table writing while the area was under

The Characters Of Calpurnia As A Mockingbird
What does it take to be considered a mother? Does it take courage? Strength? Love? Or are you only a
mother if you give birth to a child or officially adopt a child? Being there for someone emotionally,
mentally, and physically are the characteristics of a good mother. A woman or even a man can take the
role of being a protector and guardian of someone who was not necessarily born into or chosen for
their family. Calpurnia does an excellent job of taking the role as Jem and Scout s motherly figure.
She has rules and shows the kids discipline, teaches them life lessons and supports and comforts them
as they grow up. Calpurnia is Jem and Scout s African American cook who has been with their family
since before their mother died. Scout said that She had been with us ever since Jem was born, and I
had felt her tyrannical presence as long as I could remember. Our mother died when I was two, so I
never felt her absence (6). Calpurnia displays motherly actions by disciplining Jem and Scout just like
they were her own kids. Her hand was as wide as a bed slat and twice as hard (6) explained Scout.
This quote signifies that Scout knows how her hand feels and she was getting a physical punishment.
Calpurnia tends to discipline Scout more than Jem because Scout acts out and is the worst behaved
child of the siblings. She was ordering me out of the kitchen, asking me why I couldn t behave as well
as Jem when she knew he was older, and calling me home when I wasn t ready to come (6) Scout
states. Scout and Calpurnia s relationship is just like a mother and daughter relationship because they
fight and make up and Calpurnia disciplines Scout and Scout gets mad at her. Page 75 Chapter 3 states
Calpurnia bent down and kissed me. I ran along, wondering what had come over her. She had wanted
to make up with me, that was it. She had always been too hard on me, she had at last seen the error of
her fractious ways, she was sorry and too stubborn to say so. Calpurnia also accepts and claims them
as her own children because on page 118 she said, I don t want anybody sayin I don t look after my
children. Calpurnia s discipline is tough, but it relates back to the values and lessons that she wants to
teach her children.

From the early 1800 s up until 1931 Vietnam was controlled by France, Frances rule was then ended
as they were forced to pull out of Vietnam due to the start of WW2, France left a puppet ruler named
Emperor Bao Dai. This left Vietnam vulnerable to invasion which was an opportunity Japan could not

The Geneva Agreement proposed that Vietnam would be split in two, and elections would be held
every 2 years to determine who would run the country. But America failed to agree and refused to sign
as it believed it was to the benefit of communism. Ngo Dinh Diem was the southern Vietnamese Prime
minister, he and his government were supported by the Americans despite being extremely corrupt.
Diem helped rule the South of Vietnam with the Emperor Bao Dai, until he removed the Emperor and
replaced him with himself. He then further abused his position and appointed his family and friends
with the most beneficial positions. He then introduced new laws and taxes which greatly upset the
peasants, especially with the new farming policies. It was these laws that led to protests such as the
Monks which burnt themselves to death as they were unable to practise freely. Unfortunately for
America the harm Diem was creating and led to an increase in their involvement. Diem was then
assassinated shortly after.

Scarlet Letter Transcendentalism Essay
As a transcendentalist, writing typically comes from a rebellious opinion or point of view, and in this
case, given that at this time it was the rise of the era of romantics, their focus was romance. Although
Nathaniel Hawthorne was a transcendentalist of this time, he did write pieces with main focuses of
dark romance. Hawthorne, unlike other writers of his time, would write about the imperfections and
vices that come with romance. One of his most famous works, The Scarlet Letter, is set and influenced
by a time in Puritan history called the Salem Witch Trials. He used aspects of his own history to
influence his writing as well. This is another technique that differentiated Hawthorne from other

If an offense was to occur, it was first examined through the Bible and if it violated any words,

the purpose of their strict beliefs was to create an example as to what a strong religious community
should look like. They aimed to be role models for those who did not follow the Puritan ways ( The
Scarlet Letter: Nathaniel 317). The Scarlet Letter starts out with Hester Prynne, the main character,
standing on a stage in the middle of her village waiting to be punished for her crime of adultery. The
reason why Hester received her punishment for her crime in front of the whole town is because this
was the custom in which Puritans believed successful. The Puritans believed that public humiliation
was the most effect punishment there was. In response to Hester s defiance, the Puritans thought it was
best for her to be punished in the most effective way as possible (Moss and Wilson 355). One of the
main reasons why Hester Prynne was punished and humiliated so greatly was because of the fact that
adultery was in fact a new crime. This meaning that it had not surfaced severely until Hester
conceived a child through her sin. This crime was unparalleled in their culture (Baym

Difference Between Art And Contemporary Art
Christian Casas
Rafael Hernandez
LIT3400
The Everyday
A typical way of relating social/political issues to art assumes that art represents the thing one way or
another. But there can be a more interesting perspective, which is looking at the field of art as a place
of work. Basically look at what it does not what it shows. Amid all other forms of art, fine art has been
associated with post Fordist ideology. Post Fordism is a popular system of economically based on
production, consumption and has been in most industrialized countries since the late 20th century.
Contemporary art is not an out of this world discipline hidden away in some remote building. In fact,
it s the opposite because it positions itself in the thick of things. It can function as a brand name
without a brand feeding off the bits and pieces of social and political issues. Presently, contemporary
art has grown apart from important hubs, which gives the artist a wider range of production and
provides various opportunities for showcasing the work. In contrast, this has not always been the case.
Artist in novels about portraitures are depicted as servants due to the flow of cash. Art should be
functioning on its own without the need of an institutional backing in order to create separation
between the artist and their work as well as what the work can do .
Portraits appear as an object already existing in the world and about whose producer and the process
of production not much (most often nothing) needs

The begins of rock and roll have always been challenged as to when they were first established. The
most common argument is that is first started in Southern United states, the birth place of many of the

immigrants from Europe, through the gathering of different influences that created a connection
between African musical traditions with European instrumentation. Immigration of once slaves to

History of Education and Philosophy of Nurse Education
The History and Philosophy of Nurse Education
Amy Allin
Capella University
Abstract
Each educator brings to the academic arena their own personal nursing philosophy that is based on
experience and is historic in nature. By studying the history of nursing, the educator is able to guide
the student through their education process. As an educator the nurse becomes an extension of one s
own personal philosophy. Nursing theory serves as the foundation on which to develop a personal
philosophy and characterizes nursing as a profession based on the art of caring and science. In 1907,
Adelaide Nutting and Lavinia Dock wrote in the preface to their book on the history of nursing:
the modern nurse, keenly interested as she is in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The key to effective education is the commitment of the nurse educator (Bastable, 2003).
Philosophy of Nursing Education Historically the philosophy of nursing education is still patient
centered with theories of caring but nursing education and modalities have gravitated from hospital
based programs to science based programs in colleges and universities.
If higher education is to be a crucial sphere for creating citizens equipped to understand others,
exercise their freedoms, and ask questions regarding the basic assumptions that govern democratic
political life, academics will have to assume their responsibility as citizen scholars, take critical
positions, relate their work to larger social issues, offer students knowledge, debate, and dialogue
about pressing social problems, and provide the conditions for students to have hope and believe that
civic life not only matters but that they can make a difference in shaping it (Giroux, 2006). The nurse
and nurse educator share the same s personal philosophy of nursing acquired through knowledge and
life experiences. Wiedenbach believed that nurses philosophy was based on their attitude, belief about
life and how they reflected reality for them. The three essential components associated with nursing
philosophy are a reverence for life; respect for the dignity, worth, autonomy, and individuality of each
human being; and a resolution to act on personally and professionally held beliefs (Nursing Theory,
2011).

Room 101 Essay
I am here today to convince you that the outrageously rude, belligerent, and hazardous road hogs also

wear reflective clothing.
The Red light riders are a mysterious bunch of clowns who travel day and night, acting innocently but

Cyclists prowl the streets of London knowing that they cause problems to other motorists since a cycle
is the least protected on the roads. No helmets, no florescent clothing, this is what makes cyclists not
welcome in this city. According to the Department of Transport 24 out of 112 road accidents in 2008
were cyclists. This just shows the threat that cyclists can pose to other motorists in central London.
The deaths of cyclists increases each year, this shows how vital it is to put all cyclists in Room 101.
The bad mannered, foul mouthed cyclists have no respect for others. From personal experiences, I
have witnessed verbal abuse from a cyclist to another motorist; the car horned for him to move from
the middle and cycle on the left, where he should be! The cyclist was completely furious with what the
motorist had done; this aggression and volatile behaviour shows that they are not worthy of having the
privilege of cycling on the roads of London. We can make a difference by banishing them to Room
101, as citizens of London, we can make the difference.
No helmet, no safety clothing, what is the world coming too? Wearing safe clothing is an issue but not
wearing a helmet is just absolute nonsense. The clothing is as important as a helmet since it is
reflective or padded to protect major organs and even joints and bones. According to the Department

An Analysis of The Thurber Carnival Essay
An Analysis of The Thurber Carnival
The Fables for Our Time contained in Thurber s The Thurber Carnival are, in my opinion, particularly
good examples of a writer successfully breaking frames in order to create humor and satire. In this
essay I am going to explore the main methods Thurber uses to create humor and satire in the fables
The Shrike and the Chipmunks and The Unicorn in the Garden 2.
Firstly though, what do I mean by the broken frame ? This is a reference to the idea that the violation
of our frames of reference , and the recognition of the incongruity caused by it, is the basic element of
humour. If the incongruity needs to be explained, the humour will be lost. Kant expresses this idea
when he says ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To be sure, the female chipmunk had not been gone three nights before the male had to dress for a
banquet and could not find his studs or shirt or suspenders.5
Both of these fables are part of the twist in the tale tradition. They lead the reader into expecting one
type of ending and then provide another, in this case in order to create a humour.
In The Shrike and the Chipmunks , the lady chipmunk espouses all of those old wives sayings that are
generally considered to be commonsensical. You can t be healthy if you lie in bed all day and never
get any exercise, the chipmunk wife tells her husband6. The irony here is that by being forced from his
bed the male chipmunk becomes the prey of a shrike. Thurber s twist is that we tend to believe that the
wife s advice is right early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise , but in the
chipmunks case, following this maxim was a death warrant.
The moral at the end provides the final laugh. It is in fact an altered version of the maxim quoted
above. Early to rise and early to bed makes a male healthy wealthy and dead. 7 It is the familiarity of
the one, compared with the changed emphasis of the other, that breaks the frame of our experience and
provokes our laughter. This is a satirical laugh. The new version of the maxim exposes the unthinking
trust we put in a lot of sayings deserved or not.
The Unicorn in the Garden has a similar

The wingspan of the mute swans is between 208 and 238 centimeters long, and the body length of
both sexes is between 127 to 152 centimeters (Charmantier et al. 2006). Adult mute swans are entirely

Evaluate the View That the Aims of the Allied Powers Were...
On the 2nd September 1945, Japan formally surrendered to the Allied nations, indicating the cessation
of nearly 4 years of the Pacific War. The American representative MacArthur spoke of a better world
emerging out of the carnage of the past , and therefore the Occupation began. Despite the USA s and
minor allies conflicting aims for occupation, between 1945 and 1951, they set out to garrison a peace
settlement within Japan, spearheaded by MacArthur and his 3 key aims of demilitarisation,
disarmament and democratization. These objectives were achieved, with the allies remaking Japan
economically, politically, militarily and socially. However by 1950, MacArthur s policies were
revised, lessening the aims success, due to the emergence of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Shortly before, SCAP purged candidates on their militarist lists, resulting in 93% members of the
Progressive party being removed. SCAP ended up appointing their own Prime Minister, Shigeru,
however he resigned in 1947 and was replaced by Japan s first socialist PM. This lasted till 1949,
when the liberals gained a majority. Democratisation, implemented during the initial stages of the
Occupation of Japan, was attained successfully. Macarthur had effectively reformed the nations
Political, economical and social sectors. However, this would soon be reviewed as the Cold War
emerged.
The rise of Communism and the Cold war saw MacArthur and America review the 3 key objectives
within Japan, despite minor allies aversions. This undermined the aims initial success and resulted in
Japan being identified as an ally. In 1950, with the beginning of the Korean War, America wanted to
make the Pacific region an American Lake so as to cease the spread of communism. They were fearful
of the Sino Soviet alliance as the Soviet Union had become a nuclear power and China had turned
communist. Thus, SCAP banned the Japanese communist party and removed communists from the
media and industries. Disarmament and demilitarisation ended in 1950 with the formation of the
National Police reserve. America enlisted Japan into its agreement to contain communism and in
return, Japan allowed America troops to reside in its country and use

Gulf Refinery Fire
1975 GULF OIL REFINERY FIRE In the early hours of August 17, 1975, a tragic disaster occurred
on the Gulf Oil refinery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This horrific disaster took the lives of eight
firefighters, and potentially could have taken more lives if it wasn t for the help of many surrounding
fire stations. The cause of the fire was the overfilling of Tank 231. While no crude oil escaped from
the tank as a result of being overfilled, large quantities of hydrocarbon vapors were trapped above the
surface of the tank s crude oil. As the quantity of crude oil increased, these hydrocarbon vapors were
forced out of the tank s vents and into the area of the No.4 Boiler House where the initial flash
occurred. The overfilling of the tank ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Three members were attending to the apparatus and wading in the foam water petroleum mixture
which was accumulating on the ground. Commissioner Rizzo and Gulf Refinery manager Jack Burk
were on an overhead catwalk nearby observing the fire fighting operation. Without warning the
accumulating liquid surrounding Engine 133 ignited, immediately trapping the three firefighters
working at Engine 133. Instinctively and without hesitation other nearby firefighters dove into the
burning liquid to rescue their comrades, not aware of the danger to themselves. Five more firefighters
would be consumed by the advancing fire. The flames just engulfed them, said Commissioner Joseph
Rizzo, describing how he escaped the first of dozens of explosions but looked back to see three of his
men sealed in flames.
They were trying to get under the foam, but to no avail, he said. They were human torches. The fire
quickly spread eastward along Avenue Y towards 5th Street. Viewing the unfolding horror before him,
Commissioner Rizzo ordered two more alarms, five additional rescue squads, and the recall of all
companies which had previously been released from the fire grounds throughout the day. On these
orders the fire alarm room transmitted the seventh and eighth alarms. As the fire had been placed
under control nearly eight hours earlier, firefighters in stations across the city knew that the
unthinkable had occurred as these additional

INTJ Personalities And Personality Analysis
All people have personalities. Everyone has a legacy. Many people know what they are going to do in
their life. Your personality affects what your legacy is, and how you control your life. Your family
shapes your personality. These factors are what determine your values in life. My personality color is
Green. Greens tend to see themselves as creative, original, and rational. My personality type in the
Myers Brigg Test is INTJ. I am introverted, Thinking, Judging, and I have an intuition. INTJ
personalities often are perfectionists. They want to do better than their best. INTJ tend to be more
brilliant than others. They like to think, and enjoying thinking. INTJ don t like talking too much, and

Conglomerates In The United States
Describe the difference between a corporation and a conglomerate.
A corporation is independently owned by shareholders; they are larger companies with multiple
employees. Some examples of corporations would be; airline companies, soda companies, Google,
Hasbro and many more. A conglomerate is a large corporation that has several smaller companies.
Business associated with a conglomerate are unrelated and offer different products or services. John
Rockefeller of Standard Oil, Alfred Sloan of General Motors and Gerald Swope of General Electric
are some of the business tycoons credited with revolutionizing business practices, which contributed
to the organization of today s conglomerates. (Keefer).
Consider the ethics of media conglomerates in the United States. What are the ethical advantages and
disadvantages of allowing large conglomerates to control the mass media? What are alternative ways
the media might be organized that would be more ethical or moral? Explain your reasoning using both
concepts from the course and academic resources. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This would happen because people decide what they want to see, then the control of government
would be reduced. Another advantage would be, what works for the people, works for the media. We
all know that the media works to promote ads to make a profit, but the only way to do this is to offer
what the people want. A disadvantage would be if we allow large conglomerates to control the mass
media, the media would be more loyal to their advertisers and sponsors, rather than the viewers.
Another disadvantage would be the lack of competing viewpoints and perspectives. (Solanki). I think
an alternative method of operating would be that if they acted like one entity, delivering better quality
and more competition for each

The Immediate Causes Of Starvation In African Americans
1. Mehta s purpose was to report how Indians ironically starved without a shortage of food, a scenario
that she compares to starvation in the United States at the end of her writing. She most directly
indicates this purpose in paragraph eight, where she states It must be hard to be hungry when food is
plentiful. and It must be hard to be hungry, even in the U.S.A. (522).
2. The immediate cause of the starvation was the black marketeers hoarding the food and only selling
it for very high prices. A street food vendor offered three options to its customers: A price to see the
food. A higher price to smell the food. [And, a] third price to eat the food. (Mehta 522).
3. The ultimate cause of the starvation was the villagers giving their entire

Newark has one of the poorest education systems and because of that students have experienced failure upon failure. Many have worked to improve this system including philanthropist, administrators, teachers, and even members of the community. Through The Prize, she shows the different perspectives of individuals who have these titles and what they did or believe they can do in order to improve the system. It is very interesting how so many people have different ideas, though they are connected in the same system, and no one seems to listen to the other, which shows the lack of communication ... Many believed that the governor, Chris Christie, wanted to completely change Newark s education system by bringing new people and new ways in, but it actually would have been much easier to fix the problems at hand. For example, they could have educated teaches to be better, implemented new resources into district schools instead of creating more charter schools, or hire more counselors to deal with grieving children. It is easy to see that all reformers had a common educational goal for Newark, but they were different in how they handled it. Reformers like Princess Williams worked from the bottom up. She started change by showing what worked better in her classroom at first and then transferred those strategies to a larger context such as the Avon BRICK School. Problem: You are given an unknown chemical substance that you need to be able to identify. How are you going to do this? The compound can be either harmful or toxic, so what you need to do is test all of its physical and chemical properties, and then find out the synthesis of the substance. This helped me to figure out the known anion. Cation Percipitate Test #3 1. For this percipiate test with my unknown H chemical, I mixed it with , or Copper III nitrate. The purpose of this test was to determine whether my unknown formed a percipitate with this compound, and to eliminate cations. 2. If the reaction with is insoluble, it would allow me to eliminate suspected cations to get closer to the real cation. Since my cation for my unknown is soluble in most reactions, I attempted to mix it with Copper (II) nitrate, and compare them with the results of phosphate mixing with Copper (II) nitrate. 3. • 6. China s Influence On The People s Republic Of China When discussing Communism in regards to climate change and the importance placed upon its respecting policies it is perhaps best and most relevant to focus upon the People s Republic of China. This is due to both China s size and influence, along with its ranking as the leading producer of CO2 worldwide. Present day China is not a purely Communist country according to the teachings of classical/neo Marxism or orthodox Communism. Rather it s more of political Stalinism infused with market oriented economic reform. Resulting from Deng Xiaoping s attempt to save the country from Mao Zedong s failing social and economics in the early 1970 s. This is important to note as this dissertation focuses not on hypothetical political ideological viewpoints, but rather on the real world implementation of said political ideologies. The Chinese Communism views regarding the environment encompass the Marxist ideology on natural resources that natural resources are free have no intrinsic value; their sole purpose is to serve, not to constrain humans. This holds true today even as China makes strides alongside other global superpowers such as the United States to curb climate change. This contradiction is accounted for as the issues of climate change has elevated from a non stream issue to perhaps the biggest and most important threat to national security. (Ming Teh, H., Liu, T. Donald De Lu president of the National Sculpture Society stated that: Instead of immortalizing the brave Marines who have given their lives for their country, the proposed design, if permitted to be carried out would be only a source of bitter resentment, violent criticism, and ridicule. William Wheeler, later to become the President of the Sculpture Society, submitted as letter to Secretary of State Forrestal claiming numerous wrong doings by de Weldon. These charges ranged from shady business practices, expired visa, misrepresenting art, and shipping busts that were still wet and the suing for damages when they arrived damaged. • 8. The Death Of A Shoemaker And The Tea Party By Alfred F.... The American Revolution, today, is seen as a memorable event in history. It was a war against Britain for the independence of the thirteen colonies that began in 1775. Before the American Revolution began, there was a lot of conflict between the colonists and British authorities. The British raised revenue by establishing Acts such as the Stamp Act of 1766. The colonists were against it and tried revolting against Britain, leading to the Boston Massacre in 1770 of British soldiers shoot colonists and killing a few men. The colonists also retaliated against the taxations by dressing up as Indians and throwing tea into the ocean. Parliament began establishing acts known as the intolerable acts, which led to the revolution. In The Shoemaker and the Tea Party by Alfred F. Young, the author introduces and describes the life of a shoemaker, George Robert Twelves Hewes, and the events he was a part of leading up to and after the American Revolution. He shows the different meanings of the Revolution to people according to their perspective and view on society. The Excerpt from Accounts of George Robert Twelves Hewes as Told to James Hawkes by James Hawkes is a secondary source of what Hewes has told Hawkes about his memories of the Boston Massacre. This confederate flag has been known and flown for many battles over the past century and a half, which was ever since the start of the Civil War in 1861. Some people today see this flag as a symbol of hatred and are willing to get rid of it by taking it down. On the other hand, some people see this flag as a symbol of American history and want to keep this flag flying for heritage. The real question is who is right and why? On July 10th, 2015 the confederate flag was finally taken down, along with the pole it flew on. After one hundred and fifty four years this flag will forever be gone. Many people were happy and glad to see the confederate flag go because it has lately been seen as a symbol of hate. These theorists developed the learning theory by recognizing patterns of criminal behaviors and the types of values that went along with criminals, the way they lived and communicated which they called differential association (Schmalleger, 2012.) Smith states When an animal wants to obtain something either of a man or of another animal, it has no other means of persuasion but to gain the favour of those whose service it requires... Man sometimes uses the same arts with his brethren, and when he has no other means of engaging them to act according to his inclinations, endeavors by every servile and fawning attention to obtain their good will... However, to do this upon every occasion... at all times in need of the cooperation and assistance of great multitude, while his whole life is scarce sufficient to gain the friendship of a few persons (169). • 23. Epipen Research Paper There is no doubt that the study of chemistry has changed the world dramatically. Under the right circumstances, many advances in the realm of chemistry can save lives. The EpiPen® has been a wonderful chemical developed tool, aiding in potentially lethal allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis. It is important to understand what an EpiPen® is, and how it works to one day save a life if necessary. What will further be discussed is what an EpiPen® is, how it is made, used, and how it works chemically in the human body. The EpiPen® is an auto injecting pen made with epinephrine. Epinephrine commonly known as adrenaline, is a chemical compound with the formula C9H13NO3. Epinephrine is a sympathomimetic hormone, meaning a hormone that produces physiological effects in the body from the sympathetic nervous system.2 Epinephrine, or adrenaline is naturally produced in the adrenal medulla. Upon its release in the body, causes vasoconstriction or the shrinking of blood vessels, stimulates the heart, and opens up the bronchi in the lungs. Salinger spent the year of 1940 loitering around New York City, going to bars, buying records, attending plays and spending time around Park Avenue (Evans 738). Even in the thick of war he seemed unfazed. One soldier said that he remembered Salinger huddled underneath a table writing while the area was under attack. • 29. The Characters Of Calpurnia As A Mockingbird What does it take to be considered a mother? Does it take courage? Strength? Love? Or are you only a mother if you give birth to a child or officially adopt a child? Being there for someone emotionally, mentally, and physically are the characteristics of a good mother. A woman or even a man can take the role of being a protector and guardian of someone who was not necessarily born into or chosen for their family. Calpurnia does an excellent job of taking the role as Jem and Scout s motherly figure. She has rules and shows the kids discipline, teaches them life lessons and supports and comforts them as they grow up. Calpurnia is Jem and Scout s African American cook who has been with their family since before their mother died. Scout said that She had been with us ever since Jem was born, and I had felt her tyrannical presence as long as I could remember. Our mother died when I was two, so I never felt her absence (6). Calpurnia displays motherly actions by disciplining Jem and Scout just like they were her own kids. Her hand was as wide as a bed slat and twice as hard (6) explained Scout. This quote signifies that Scout knows how her hand feels and she was getting a physical punishment. Calpurnia tends to discipline Scout more than Jem because Scout acts out and is the worst behaved child of the siblings. She was ordering me out of the kitchen, asking me why I couldn t behave as well as Jem when she knew he was older, and calling me home when I wasn t ready to come (6) Scout states. Scout and Calpurnia s relationship is just like a mother and daughter relationship because they fight and make up and Calpurnia disciplines Scout and Scout gets mad at her. Page 75 Chapter 3 states Calpurnia bent down and kissed me. I ran along, wondering what had come over her. She had wanted to make up with me, that was it. She had always been too hard on me, she had at last seen the error of her fractious ways, she was sorry and too stubborn to say so. Calpurnia also accepts and claims them as her own children because on page 118 she said, I don t want anybody sayin I don t look after my children. • 35. Difference Between Art And Contemporary Art Christian Casas Rafael Hernandez LIT3400 The Everyday A typical way of relating social/political issues to art assumes that art represents the thing one way or another. But there can be a more interesting perspective, which is looking at the field of art as a place of work. Basically look at what it does not what it shows. Amid all other forms of art, fine art has been associated with post Fordist ideology. Post Fordism is a popular system of economically based on production, consumption and has been in most industrialized countries since the late 20th century. Contemporary art is not an out of this world discipline hidden away in some remote building. In fact, it s the opposite because it positions itself in the thick of things. It can function as a brand name without a brand feeding off the bits and pieces of social and political issues. Presently, contemporary art has grown apart from important hubs, which gives the artist a wider range of production and provides various opportunities for showcasing the work. In contrast, this has not always been the case. Artist in novels about portraitures are depicted as servants due to the flow of cash. Art should be functioning on its own without the need of an institutional backing in order to create separation between the artist and their work as well as what the work can do . Nursing theory serves as the foundation on which to develop a personal philosophy and characterizes nursing as a profession based on the art of caring and science. If higher education is to be a crucial sphere for creating citizens equipped to understand others, exercise their freedoms, and ask questions regarding the basic assumptions that govern democratic political life, academics will have to assume their responsibility as citizen scholars, take critical positions, relate their work to larger social issues, offer students knowledge, debate, and dialogue about pressing social problems, and provide the conditions for students to have hope and believe that civic life not only matters but that they can make a difference in shaping it (Giroux, 2006). In this essay I am going to explore the main methods Thurber uses to create humor and satire in the fables The Shrike and the Chipmunks and The Unicorn in the Garden 2. Firstly though, what do I mean by the broken frame ? In The Shrike and the Chipmunks , the lady chipmunk espouses all of those old wives sayings that are generally considered to be commonsensical. You can t be healthy if you lie in bed all day and never get any exercise, the chipmunk wife tells her husband6. The irony here is that by being forced from his bed the male chipmunk becomes the prey of a shrike. Thurber s twist is that we tend to believe that the wife s advice is right early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise , but in the chipmunks case, following this maxim was a death warrant. The moral at the end provides the final laugh. It is in fact an altered version of the maxim quoted above. Early to rise and early to bed makes a male healthy wealthy and dead. 7 It is the familiarity of the one, compared with the changed emphasis of the other, that breaks the frame of our experience and provokes our laughter. • 42. Gulf Refinery Fire 1975 GULF OIL REFINERY FIRE In the early hours of August 17, 1975, a tragic disaster occurred on the Gulf Oil refinery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This horrific disaster took the lives of eight firefighters, and potentially could have taken more lives if it wasn t for the help of many surrounding fire stations. The cause of the fire was the overfilling of Tank 231. While no crude oil escaped from the tank as a result of being overfilled, large quantities of hydrocarbon vapors were trapped above the surface of the tank s crude oil. As the quantity of crude oil increased, these hydrocarbon vapors were forced out of the tank s vents and into the area of the No.4 Boiler House where the initial flash occurred. The overfilling of the tank ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Three members were attending to the apparatus and wading in the foam water petroleum mixture which was accumulating on the ground. Commissioner Rizzo and Gulf Refinery manager Jack Burk were on an overhead catwalk nearby observing the fire fighting operation. Without warning the accumulating liquid surrounding Engine 133 ignited, immediately trapping the three firefighters working at Engine 133. Instinctively and without hesitation other nearby firefighters dove into the burning liquid to rescue their comrades, not aware of the danger to themselves. Five more firefighters would be consumed by the advancing fire. The flames just engulfed them, said Commissioner Joseph Rizzo, describing how he escaped the first of dozens of explosions but looked back to see three of his men sealed in flames. They were trying to get under the foam, but to no avail, he said. They were human torches. The fire quickly spread eastward along Avenue Y towards 5th Street. Viewing the unfolding horror before him, Commissioner Rizzo ordered two more alarms, five additional rescue squads, and the recall of all companies which had previously been released from the fire grounds throughout the day. On these orders the fire alarm room transmitted the seventh and eighth alarms. As the fire had been placed under control nearly eight hours earlier, firefighters in stations across the city knew that the unthinkable had occurred as these additional ... • 45. The Immediate Causes Of Starvation In African Americans 1. Mehta s purpose was to report how Indians ironically starved without a shortage of food, a scenario that she compares to starvation in the United States at the end of her writing. She most directly indicates this purpose in paragraph eight, where she states It must be hard to be hungry when food is plentiful. and It must be hard to be hungry, even in the U.S.A. (522). 2. A street food vendor offered three options to its customers: A price to see the food. A higher price to smell the food. [And, a] third price to eat the food. (Mehta 522). 3.
